He is a good teacher you can learn a helluva lot from him but you can't be a bonehead
His teaching style was awful. The class consisted mostly of mmmkay? rather than actual math. The tests were traps--40% or more of the problems would be on material so new there hadn't been any homework due on it before the exams.
He is a fair teacher. Pros: good board notes, very organized, website wit hw problems and sample midterms, prepared. Cons: gives alot of odd problems tempts alot of ppl into copying solutions manual =| tests really do test u how much u know.

Average, but his lectures are decent.
He's a talented teacher- he can ascertain what people aren't understanding, and break it down until they understand it. He had a rapport with the class that is rare for a math teacher.
He is an outstanding math teacher.
As teachers go, his lectures were informative enough, but I found it hard to focus. His testing, however, was not impressive. He tests on minutia, and seeks to trap his students with obsure special cases rather than the entire concept.
he's an awesome teacher who knows his material and knows how to explain it well
Eastman is generally a good math professor. His lectures capture a great detail on the materials presented in the course. Although, he is not an easy math teacher. His midterms and final were quite challenging. Overall, good teacher.
So into math. But he doesn't explain to well. He does give generous curves on his tests but they're really hard.
pro: good lectures con: the worst test maker ever. His tests are harder than anything he has ever taught.
He's a good math teacher, but not great. He's kind of into himself. And it seems like he makes you feel bad that you don't know the answer. I did enjoy hearing him say "Mmm-kay," all the time.
A very good lecturer who knows his stuff and knows how to present it. Some of his examples are lame but he covers everything and everything makes sense. Tests have very basic concepts, just filled with tricks. Highly recommended!
An amazing clear teacher. He was very exicited about what he taught and it made me interested. I he is extremely helpful during office hours and a great guy. Highly recommended.
Pretty good professor, I really liked doing the homework online. His tests were really hard though, he gave really difficult problems. Good thing he was nice with curves. A 54% counted as a C! It was funny to hear him say "mmm-kay?" all the
His lectures are very straightforward and simplistic, but somewhat unsatisfying. Not a very challenging class, which could be a bad thing if you're looking to actually learn some math.
He's really prompt with his emails and really enjoys teaching. It shows.
He basically teaches from the book and teaches the material fairly well. The homework and quizzes are generally easy, but the tests are extremely difficult. He really tests how well you know your stuff. His curves don't help much..
lecture was fun, def not boring. he seemed like he loves teaching. tests were fair.
I knew my**** and studdied, and ACED all HIS QUIZES and GOT B,s and As on his Exams and he still gave me a B. He is a good teacher I cannot say anything bad about him except that he is unfair at grading.
AMAZING! already had previous experience with calculus and i still learned a lot and enjoyed his lectures.
Good math teacher. His lectures are easy to understand. Quizzes are somewhat easy. Homework online is good too. Tests are difficult. I enjoyed his class, he is a good teacher.
Professor Eastman is an excellent teacher and explains everything with incredible depth and clarity. He is very approachable and helpful at office hours. Exans are difficult though as he likes to test your ability to apply the material.
He is a really good teacher and very clear. I thought that the homework online was a lot harder than the midterms. The final was extremely difficult, he uses the hardest examples of each type of problem.
HE knows his stuff. A very good teacher, teaches by the book incase you miss a class. Homework is a lot harder than the tests but you know what to expect thanks to all the previous tests he releases on his website. I really learnt a lot even with prior calc experience.
I took this class twice and sadly got D's both times; but that's my own fault. I thought he was a great teacher who is very clear and really has a passion for math. The midterms and finals were hard as hell for me and I never passed one, but the average is pretty high.
I didn't do well in his class because he assumes you have taken calc before, so he doesn't explain the basics. Also, his exams are way harder than the practices ones, so watch out for that!
He is SO clear. I can't imagine any teacher being more clear than he is. I love when he stared at the class for a few seconds and said "mmmmmm k?" after everything!

Never had teacher who was more clear!!! He was AWESOME!!! And i loved the way he would look at us. and he erases the board completely.. and that is always very very nice.
Hes really an awesome guy i wish i could take his class every quarter. super clear and very thorough!!i love him!!
Eastman is a great professor who shows a lot of examples that are not in the book. He is also great at explaining things after class if you still do not understand. His TA's are also great teachers.
Eastman's lectures are great, clear and easy to follow. The subject of Calculus may be difficult for some people but he is not a hard teacher. As long as you do all the work and attend section, you'll do fine. The TAs are helpful with questions as well.
Horrible professor. His exams were extremely difficult and had nothing to do with the examples he gave in class. His TAs are extremely helpful, so make sure you go to section unless you want to fail and die.
He was the clearest and most easy to follow math prof i've ever had. That said, his tests SUCK! Only 7 problems on the midterm = 10 concepts jam-packed into each problem. None of his in-class or homework examples will prepare you for the test problems. I was so terrified of taking another math class that I changed my major (from Econ to Politics)
Eastman is a great professor, but his test are challenging. Keep up with the material and you'll do well. If you do the practice midterms before the midterms without difficulties, then you'll do fine.
A decent professor with tests that were challenging but not impossible. A plus is he says "mmkay" like Mr. Mackey in South Park.
Amazing teacher - knowledgeable, clear, funny. I can't understand how anyone wouldn't be able to follow him - I'm pretty sure he could make Calculus easy for an eight year old. Tests are hard, but if you went to all the lectures and did the practice problems, you'll be ready.
good teacher, but he grades way too hard.
I honestly think he made calc 2 seem harder than it actually is. He spends very little time on the basic framework of each chapter, and immediatley goes to the harder problems, many of which will never be on a exam. Two days before the final he taught the hardest material yet, and it made up 25% of the exam. He will test on the minority,so be read
ummm...very nice guy, funny but an incredibly difficult tester and grader. his tests were consistantly above the level he taught at and in both the classes i took woth him the average was never passing so if you arent a strong tester do not take this class!!
hard test but fun lectures
we are not 5 years old. please dont teach us as such.
He's a good lecturer, but his tests were tough. Definitely do the homework and go to lectures. He's definitely nutty and does weird body motions which kept it entertaining. Go to office hours if you need any help!
I took Math 11A (Calculus). Eastman is very intimidating, his questions are really tricky. His first midterm he tricked many of his students on his questions. But if you attend class, he uses several examples to make sure you understand the content. Although he is a difficult teacher, I enjoyed his class and he's an awesome professor.
Fun guy, good lecturer, but damn were his tests hard. Homework counted for pretty much nothing so your grade game from quizes and tests. I'm a Biochem major and pretty good at math, but this class proved to be really tough. Overall a pretty good teacher, could of been much worse. If you want to a see a bad teacher check out Mason.
Eastman was a very cool, energetic, funny, and passionate teacher. I'd highly recommend his class. I actually liked going to class and we're talking calculus...who enjoys that?
Has really stupid jokes, not funny at all. Presents information in a informative way, and very helpful if you go to every lecture. Tests tend to be harder than the practice midterm, so beware. Tough midterms and finals, there is always one question on the test that nobody can solve. He said to put it on there. Don't take him unless you have to.
Pretty good professor. If you go to lecture, he will teach you everything you need to know. Skipping lectures is a huge mistake. Pretty good at explaining things even though he does move a little fast sometimes.
He's a very very good professor. Very clear with his examples, and if you don't get it, he's willing to help you with it until you do get it. His test on the other hand get exponentially harder.
HE HAS ALOT OF ENGERY DURING LECTURE. HIS TEST IS NOT HARD, TESTS ARE SIMILAR TO PRACTICE EXAM, EASY A CLASS. LECTURE IS INTERESTING.
Has anyone ever seen south park? The part where that character goes "mkay?" Well, Eastman does that, it makes me laugh a lot. Lectures are good to go if you do not understand the concept, but not the best to learning how to solve the problems themselves. Tests your precal skills as well as calculus, so just study his practice exams.
He was a good teacher, maybe a little monotone. Some people didn't like the fact that he gave a lot of examples, but I appreciated it. Attending lecture is probably a good idea. Section was mandatory, and I had the most boring TA ever. He made us stay the full hour and 45 minutes, and went over stuff that was obvious. Get a good TA.
He's great with examples and showing how the concept applies to the homework problems. Clear, concise. Tests were a lot like the practice ones he gave, so do them. NEVER miss class.
Very entertaining teacher which made going to class enjoyable. Good examples in class. Homework examples can be found in the book. Pay attention to what are on the practice midterms/finals because he tends to use the same problems.
Teaching style was bad, but tests were worse. Tests typically were designed to be as difficult as possible, to the point where even the TAs didn't really know how to solve many of the problems. Learn your trig calc, cause you're going to need it.
Horrible teacher. Did not like his teaching style at all. He tends to "act out" his problems and it just makes everythin much more confusing. I found it much more helpful to read the book and learn from there. His tests are way to long to the point where the majority of the class does not finish in the amount of time aloted.
I found the class to be very helpful. I was not a big fan of calculus before this class, but he made my understanding so much clearer. I also really enjoyed his teaching style. The class was definitely not boring.
Not the hardest class, but studying is very necessary. Tests are pretty straightforward, and lectures offer some clarity. Overall one of the better Math classes I've taken.
i got a D...could possibly be due to the fact that i slept through every single class...it's possible that i just despise math...don't take this rating as a reflection on mark at all...just don't take the class if you can't stand math...honestly: take it during the summer at a community college when you'll stay awake..
His class was great from my experience. His lectures were clear, and he took every question seriously. His lectures are derived directly from the book, but buying the book is necessary for online HW. His online homework were good, but be ready to do it online. His tests are steps above the HW difficulty, but his grading policy is fair with a curve.
Prof. Eastman is definitely a hard grader, but he is more than willing to give you as much help as you need during his office hours. TAs were unhelpful, I slept through most sections. If you are going to take his class, GO TO CLASS. Examples are very similar to online homework questions. Definitely buy the book!
Eastman is awesome. His lecturing style is really clear and he has superbly neat handwriting. His class is not super hard or super easy--kind of like being in AP Calculus. Cracks a few jokes and tries to make math fun. Make sure you do the online homework and go to sections for the quizzes--they'll be good review for midterms and final.
Eastman is a great lecturer. He manages to always keep high energy when talking to a room of bored students, and he's very clear in his teachings. His tests are really hard, but they're curved so its all passable.
Eastman is a talented lecturer. He knows his material and has a great grading scale.
Very fair, very clear. Made it so much easier than I expected. I was happy he was teaching 22 b/c I had a good experience with him in 19A. Tests are reasonable if you study.
This class was cool. He was pretty easy. His tests were pretty easy. Just study from his reviews. It's ALMOST the same, just added a few extra. His curve is great. Online homework...piece of cake. Easy A for his class.
Eastman's lectures are very clear and easy to understand, he goes slow enough that you can copy all the notes down, and they are a great help in studying. The class isn't too hard, and he works to have practice exams on-line. The homework is easy, and so are the weekly quizzes.
A difficult class with any teacher. I was grateful for Eastman's practice exams, but his online homework is graded harder than the other 3 math professors I've had. He had some funny examples in class, and was pretty clear but I didn't grasp the class content well enough to pass.
Nice guy... but I dislike his teaching methods. His class gets boring because he spends too much time grinding basic topics. Hw/Midterms harder than my Ap Calc class in Highschool, yet the concepts are very easy. One midterm had 2/8 questions that were not on practice midterm/hw... Overall, just be responsible for the hw and dont expect him to help
Boss ****! This teacher is wonderful. The tests were difficult, but then again its Calculus so what do you expect. Eastman made it entertaining to come to class. Its difficult to get a good grade, but its possible if you study a lot. Overall, my favorite teacher in UCSC so far
Very Helpful! Definitely go to the lectures. Whatever Mark lectures on could possibly be on the midterms and final. His practice exams are very similar to the ones that he gives out. The online hw is similar to questions from the text except the numbers (in bold red) are changed. Trouble understanding material? Go to his office hours it's worth it.
Eastman is a great lecturer and actually kept in interested in Calculus. Beware, his tests are hard and nothing like the practice he gives out.
Eastman is a funny professor. He keeps his class entertained while teaching calculus. His midterms are almost in the same format as the practice ones but with different numbers. This class was enjoyable. I recommend Eastman for a math professor. The hw is done online which can be a bit annoying sometimes.
Eastman is a great teacher -- he's really entertaining and knows his stuff. He shows a lot of proofs. You don't need the book but you might want it as a reference. Go to class and go to sections if you need to and you'll be fine. I'm still trying to figure out how to draw a circle like Eastman does.
This guy is a terrible teacher. He gave us easy examples that I understood well enough in lecture, but when it came to tests they were a hundred times harder. I went to every section, every lecture, and even to my TA's office hours and barely passed. This guy should not still be teaching at UCSC.
I liked his lectures but his tests are extremely hard, I got a zero on a problem with the right answer because the grader did not like the way I figured it out. He makes the tests to long and most people do not finish in time.
I took calculus before so this class was easy. He gives good examples in class and really explains things. If you go to class everyday and do the homework, it shouldn't be that hard of a class. He's a funny guy too. Definitely a good teacher!
Eastman is definitely hilarious and keeps class interesting, as hard as that is with calculus. The only problem were his tests which were extremely difficult and with much harder problems than the practice tests
Eastman's a funny guy, in a weird kind of way...He's good at explaining things conceptually, but I found that the examples he gave in class were WAY easier than the homework and test problems, so get a good TA. The online homework sucks. And be warned: the class starts off really easy but snowballs at the end.
2-3 homework assignments per week. One quiz each week, on Wed/Thurs. The quizzes weren't too hard. Lectures are less helpful than sections. You probably won't be able to do all the homework without attending section. 2 midterms, one final. He provides 1-2 practice exams before each exam. You can use a 3x5 card of notes for each exam.
Very straightforward in his teaching and testing, just attend regularly and get a good TA. Do his practice midterms but remember not to memorize it and consider everything he's gone over and you'll be fine. Homework is handwritten.
interesting teacher with enjoyable quirks,Found myself relying heavily on the textbook for answers. Plus, even though attendance isn't mandatory, you should attend all the sections and lectures you can because there is a lot taught in this class that wasn't taught in high school calculus. Fairly difficult midterms, not too bad
His lectures aren't very useful, the book helps a lot to clear up his holes. Online homework makes those points easy to get. Go to discussion sections, the TA's help you out a lot.
He puts his lecture notes online, though he does not put examples online. (Those can be obtained from the book.) He goes through problems quickly, but students should be able to stay with him or ahead of him if they've read the section before the lecture. However, my T.A. (Alex Zlotnik) taught me far, far more than Eastman did - amazing T.A.!
Very good teacher. He can teach math and entertain at the same time. His lectures actually help, and he has decent TAs. I liked having him as a teacher and am happy to have him again.
Class seems easy when attending, but he lets you use a ntoecard on exams, so he makes the EXTREEMILY HARD. I do great on homework and Section Quizes, but fail the exam because the questions make me feel like I dont know anything
he is funny and cool..you won't fall asleep during the class. His exams are actually not that hard if you practice the previous examss he posted online
I took calculus back in school, so this class was a piece of cake for me. But I do agree that his first mid term was somewhat difficult.
If you did not take calculus in HS then this class may be difficult for you. It is obviously easy for those who have seen the material before even if it was a bit diluted in HS. It is advised that you find help extra help when taking this class with him b/c he gives very general examples (very vague) but gives very computational problems.
Not a big fan of his lectures, first midterm was easy, second midterm was rough, final was fair enough. Online homework was a pain in the ass but his office hours are gold but to be honest I really hated this class.
Not a big fan of his lectures, first midterm was easy, second midterm was rough, final was fair enough. Online homework was a pain in the ass but his office hours are gold but to be honest I really hated this class.

Eastman's lectures are good (compared to most of the math profs im sure) but he speaks in all abstracts and does very few examples. Tests were brutal.
At first I hated this class. It was hard and I felt overwhelmed at some points but I did B level work and got a solid B in the class. Homework and quizzes are forgiving, they give you some cushion for the exams. Overall a difficult class but... can't say it was anything but fair.
I couldn't stand his useless annoying lectures & he makes inappropriate noises sometimes. He gives practice tests that are similar to the actual test, but he puts a couple of unfamiliar questions & if you don't know how to do them, the highest grade you'll get is a C.He curves, but this doesn't make the class easy to pass.As a lecturer,I give him 6/10
AWESOME. He's extremely clear and a funny guy. Word of advice: Go over former tests.
Quite funny, and quite strange. Good teacher though, and if you put in the effort it is possible to get an A. Webassign homework which is a good and a bad thing.
Eastman is funny. His tests are hard, but you can get a good idea of what he will ask if you look at previous tests which he always gives. Lectures are hard to follow, as he talks fast, and doesnt explain parts of problems that will mess you up. Usually i learn everything from the TA in section.
Had Eastman for 19A. The best Math teacher I've had. He is funny and very clear in delivering lectures. Tests may be challenging, but if you get a good understanding of the materials then you should be okay.
Easy A if you do the extra assigned homework problems since every quiz and test questions copy the problems but change a few numbers around to confuse you. Got A's in both midterms just by doing problems. Great professor, funny, very clear, and overall a math teacher you can't forget.
I really liked him for 11A where he was very clear and the tests were relevant. But for 22 he wasn't as good. His tests were hard and had questions that we never really discussed in class. Go to section and have the TAs help you on the tests and quizzes.
His tests are very hard. In one of his midterms the average score was around a 50/100. The problems he assigns in the homework are way easier than the ones in the actual test. Make sure to do problems from the textbook and the practice midterms.
Very very hard/tricky tests; exams are nothing like the practice tests. He teaches how to do certain problems not main concepts. I got an A in my precalc class (because I had an awesome teacher) but really struggled to get a B+ in this class. Not a very good teacher, take someone else.
He is as good of a math teacher as I could ask for.
Mark is a fantastic teacher! All Multivariable Calculus classes are super difficult but with Mark you can at least have some understanding of it. He genuinely cares about his students and if you go to office hours he will make sure you learn something while you're there. He is always very helpful and gets excited about teaching.
Professor was straight forward in what he wanted and his lectures helped a lot as he mostly went over examples.
Hard teaching style and hard tests but makes the class fun and draws perfect circles
Eastman is a difficult professor, however if you attend lecture and utilize the tutoring schedule and TA help, you should be good to go. I am terrible at anything math related and I found that learning lessons from Eastman was fairly straightforward.
By far the hardest math teacher I've had. You don't think he's, but then you take his tests. One thing that was helpful is that he bases his curves off of the average of the class. I.E if the average was a 40% that is where a C would be etc. He is a hard test giver, but responsible.
I found him to be an amazing professor! He speaks very clearly and his notes are great. His tests aren't bad, doing his homework problems in the book are very helpful to prepare for the tests. His exams are pretty much based on the midterms/final practice exams from previous years. He's a great help if you go to office hours and he's welcoming!
He's very repetitive on some of the topics he discusses and the class isn't difficult if you attend lectures and do problems on the textbook. Also the exams are based off of past exams he posts up on his website. So practice those and you'll do fine in the class.
Very repetitive, boring lectures, confusing way of describing calculus (did not explain it in the most straightforward way)
Really great Calculus teacher. Very elloquent and clear. No surprises what so ever. 1st midterm and final aren't bad at all but his 2nd midterm is hard (He did tell us this before hand). Eastman is also very approahable during the office hours and will throughly answer any question you have. And on top that he's very entertaining during lecture.
Clear. Seems nice. Tells you what to expect on tests, gives old exams for us to practice. Sometimes lectures are dull but he tries to add some humor into the lectures.
Challenging tests, but nothing that he hasn't prepared you for if you attend lectures. He's also pretty funny and very approachable, and will definitely help you if you ask. Even though I didn't do great in the class, I still thought he was a good teacher, but seek help as soon as you don't understand something- otherwise you will be lost.
I agree with everyone when they say that his exams are difficult. HOWEVER, if you take notes in class, attend section regularly, and do the optional homework along with the online WebAssign homework, you will do fine. He tries to be funny with his sarcastic voice, but I think it is just annoying. If you want the A, good luck! 3rd of the class fail!
I've had Eastman for Calculus 11A and B, he is the man. He is hilarious and really knows his stuff. You do not have to attend class, but if you do it is extremely helpful as well as entertaining. His exams are quite easy because he posts practice exams, and practice problems that directly reflect what is on the exam. Eastman is a god among men
Professor Eastman is a wonderful teacher. He knows what he is doing and he successfully keeps the class entertained. He is very helpful during office hours and his previous exams are very helpful towards midterms and finals. He is very reasonable and always willing to help a brotha out.
Best math teach ive ever had. Explains everything super clearly and has an upbeat personality that makes class enjoyable. Very fair grader
Eastman is a great prof. His lectures are very clear and are centered around examples. He's a funny guy and tries to keep things interesting. His tests can be tricky, but are manageable given you study and do extra problems. He provides previous midterms and finals to study from prior to the tests. Overall, a less painful introduction to calculus.
Phenomenal Calculus teacher. Very elloquent and clear. No surprises at all. For both classes, the 1st midterm and final aren't bad at all but his 2nd midterm is hard (He did tell us this before hand). Eastman is also very friendly during OH and will throughly answer any question you have. And on top that he's very entertaining during lecture.
Eastman is a great teacher. A lot of people fail, but it is because they do not utilize MSI, section, and office hours. If you do the optional homework in the book and the practice exams, it is definitely possible to get an A or B in the class. The grade you receive reflects on the effort you put in. I love Mark and think he is a great teacher!
Ok lecturer. His exams require a lot of out of class time prep to pass but he does offer a lot of help if you take it. You cannot pass his class going to the lectures alone.
Exams are very fair if you study the samples rigorously and do all the homework. He grades hard, but is very clear on what exactly he expects. Took this class after failing Tromba and did not regret it.
Highly recommend taking Eastman for 11 series. His exams are a big touch, and they trick the majority of the class. However, if you do his optional practice problems, and pay half attention to the required hw, and review his practice exams you will be fine. Entertaining professor for math too. Great guy!
Fairly good teacher with interesting lectures. However, you must do the extra book problems or you'll have a difficult time on the test. Test problems are basically pulled from the text and previous exams. Be able to do past tests and book problems and you should do well.
Midterms were straight forward except practice exam for the final was not similar to the actual final. Very. Disappointed.
Puts way too many tricks on his exams. Final Exam was nothing like his practice Finals. Hope I passed. Cool guy but makes it way harder then needed.
Midterms weren't that bad, practice exams helped. However, the final was a totally different story. It was totally different from the practice finals. Overall, funny guy but his tests aren't a "walk in the park"
He is a bit cocky and arrogant. Comes off as a cool guy, but in reality is not. The midterms were not incredibly difficult, but he did throw in questions that could catch a person off guard. The final was ridiculous. There were things not from the class or the textbook. If you can take this class with someone else, do it. I do not recommend Eastman
This is NOT a class that you can just show up to every once in awhile. His midterms have a lot of tricks and difficulty to them. 1/3 + of the class fails so if you don't study and try, don't expect to do well. entertaining lecturer and take advantage of his office hours and lectures. they are a huge help!
Eastman comes off as a nice guy but the things that matter the most to most students are the grades and tests. This is where Eastman fails. His Midterms and Final are ridiculous!! I am and A student and I found myself struggling to pass. If you can avoid him do so. Will be the most frustrating math class you will ever take!!
The tests where extremely difficult in comparison the the examples shown in class and to the homework. The averages on the midterms were a 68 on the first and a 53 on the second.
Eastman is a nice person. Very entertaining during office hours. However, his exams are hard and puts so many tricks on them. I guess wait for a different professor to take 11A and 11B with. I dont recommend him!
This is my second time taking this course. Obviously, the first time was horrible for me. This time, I'm doing SO MUCH better. His explanations are great and easy, but tests are a new story. He tricks you a lot! Just make sure your TA prepares you for difficult problems for the test. Study the small things too, it will be on the tests.
Eastman is a brilliant professor. He is extremely clear when he lectures but manages to get through a wealth of material in only an hour. I highly recommend taking a math course with him. Though the material can be difficult at times, section will definitely save you.
Although his lecturing style and examples are clear and concise, his tests are monstrous if you don't know the bare minimum concepts/rules of derivatives and limits. Attend section, and don't rely on JUST his practice midterms/finals.
great teacher. very clear when teaching and is pretty funny. his tests are pretty hard though. you definitely gotta know your material but its not too difficult
easy if you can teach yourself and are good at solving curve ball questions. he teaches the easy things then his test are impossible to pass.
Eastman is a very smart, and pretty entertaining professor. However, his class is pretty difficult. I took it once and failed, then re-took it and worked my butt off and still recieved a mediocre grade. Of the 10 people who I knew in the class at the beggining only one other actually passed.Don't take this class if you aren't prepared to work.
This is my second time retaking this course from Eastman. I failed the course the first time. He comes off as a good/entertaining lecturer however his tests are a completely different story. He makes the material on the tests incredibly difficult. I worked very hard this course and attended ACE sections but still ended up with a mediocre grade.
Be prepared to teach yourself the material. He goes over basics/proofs in class and then puts difficult questions on tests. Even his TAs know he likes to put "tricky" questions on tests, doesn't curve much, and doesn't like giving out A's. Make sure to get a good TA, they will be teaching you everything.
did not like prof much pace of lectures is far too slow with too many examples. wouldnt mind lots of examples but his examples if they compared to the difficulty of exams. doesnt watch students much during exams and SO MUCH CHEATING takes place it was annoying, the whole back half of the room used graphing calculators for all exams, pretty unfair
Very enthusiastic and great at teaching. Also smart enough to have a clean and convenient website. CON: horrible exams. The first exam was fair, second consisted of trick questions and the final was an outright ambush. I would normally be okay with it but since this class is full of students who have taken the course before, I'm not so sure there will be a curve.
Mark is extremely helpful during office hours and his lectures are not bad as well. His exams are ridiculously hard though! If you think something is not going to be on the test, it probably is so study everything! Book problems help! good luck!
Eastman has the hardest tests i have ever taken and does not give sufficient study material or warning. He is confusing and always says 'particular' it drives people crazy. I personally would wait to take 11B with another professor because you will have a really hard time getting an A.
Eastman impressed himself a lot. Lectures are ok, but I didn't always completely follow so they weren't that helpful, the homework is very tedious and annoying. The midterms were fine but the final was really hard, he threw in stuff that was way harder than he did in lecture.
Great teacher!
Eastman is good at teaching, but he screws you over on the exams. Yeah he is good at teaching but he exams are nothing like his lectures, it's as if he doesn't want you to pass his class. I suggest anyone taking him not take him because it's ridiculous to teach something and make the exams nothing like what he taught.
Lectures are very clear. His explanations and way of teaching is extremely helpful but tests are ridiculously hard.
Eastman is a very good lecturer and uses lots of examples. His homework is basically there just to give you points, so you need to do harder probs out of the book. Despite what people say, his exams arent THAT ridiculously hard if you study.I got a C on the midterm with minimal studying. Overall, great teacher, but lots of studying needed to do well.
He is a great professor. He is great at explaining and gives simple examples. His tests are indeed difficult. It's not so much the Calculus that will trip you, but the tricky algebra. He really makes you think in tests. His midterm was easy but his final was difficult. He really makes you think about what you're doing.
Ridiculously hard final. I managed to get a B on the midterm, but failed the final exam; I got a C-. Eastman is infamous for failing people (all of my 6 housemates have previously failed his 11A & 11B). Avoid at all costs, ruined my GPA. Exams are so difficult that it's as if he doesn't want you to pass. Bad experience. Says particular like crazy!
Eastman is not as hard as everyone makes him out to be. His tests aren't undoable, just time consuming. He gives you all the tools you need to do well on his exams. Attend lectures and section regularly and you should be in good shape. Also, do the extra problems he assigns from the book if you're worried.
Not as hard as everyone says. He gives lot of resources for tests. Still a difficult class, but doable for sure. Best math teacher I've ever had. His lectures are incredibly concise and he does lots of examples.
He isn't a great lecture, definitely the way people rave about him on here. He goes REALLY slowly through simple material and glazes over the intricate and difficult parts. You are COMPLETELY dependent on learning from your TA so get a good one (I suggest Bob). The tests are stupid hard and stupid long. Go fast
He isn't the best lecturer and is quite condescending at times. His tests are on the slightly more difficult side of fair and his class as a whole very much based on self-studying and attending TA sections. He is known not to curve at all, no matter how close you are, so be very careful.
Easy class. Students who struggle with math will struggle with all math classes. This class was a joke. One of the easiest math classes I have taken here. He curves pretty good too. People just come in here to complain about the grade they received lmao.
EASY CLASS
This class is a joke. lol like a HS class for me. Easy A. The curve helped me a lot too. :)
He's a great lecturer, he goes into detail and very slow. However he does easy examples in class while the test has problems that are 10x harder. I only passed because of the curve but his tests are hard! Go to section and def go to office hours for help or you won't pass.
Eastman is probably the worst professor ever, one time when I was in 19a I came into his office hours and asked him if there was any way I could still pass his class and he straight out told me no. I also took 23B with him, and this most be his favorite class because he teaches it almost every quarter
I tried so hard to do all the work and I actually understood the homework but ended up getting a really low F on his midterm. His tests are 10x harder than his homework and lectures. If you want to fail then don't take this class.
Attend class, do your assignments ahead of time, and asking questions in sections are the best ways to do well in the class. When the midterm and final comes do the review sheets on his website over and over again! They will really help you on the actual exam.
Eastman gets a bad reputation for his tests, but he really is a great teacher. Go to section, go to lecture, pay attention and you will understand the material. As for those tests, his practice midterms and finals were very accurate in terms of both content and difficulty, so I was never caught off guard by any problems on the actual exams.
Took 19A which was fine, much easier than 19B(I failed, then later took with Migliore- way better). In both A and B the first midterm is much easier than the 2ndfinal, so many people find out they're doing poorly after it's too late to withdraw and fail. Homework and lecture examples are way easier than the exams, and he is not very approachable.
He is so unapproachable. Its like he thinks someones going to hurt him or shoot him or something, he's so reserved and doesn't open up or act friendly. Like he keeps his guard on, which is weird when you're just tryna ask him for help. Also, he can be very rude.
Great lecturer, came to class with no prior calculus experience and left feeling very knowledgeable. Didn't do super well on the midterm, almost aced the final. You really have to study to actually understand the material, just being able to mechanically compute the problems isn't enough. Reasonable class, wasn't blind sided by test questions
Worst math professor I have had in UCSC! Tests are way off what he says it would be.
I had to take this class twice because I failed the class the first time. I largely blame this on myself because I didn't develop a strong study style and I had only 1 quarter of calculus under my belt. He's tough, but he is a very good lecturer.
1 midterm and 1 final. Midterm was easy, study off of the practice midterms. Final was a bit harder but still manageable. Go to lectures, he explains things in great detail and you really understand it.
Eastman is a nice guy, but he's not very good at elaborating. He writes pretty small on the projector so it would be a good idea to sit towards the front. There were weekly quizzes in mandatory section, but they were fairly easy.
He just doesn't seem like he cares at all about his lower division classes, were just shoved off to the TA's any time we try to engage with him. (to be fair the TA's are pretty good) Also the test are beyond brutal and the only real prep material he gives is mid-terms from 2007-2008 which are not even remotely close to the midterms he gave us.
The class is boring
Boring class. Not very engaging during lecture. I learned most of the material in section from the TA and from MSI sessions.
His reviews are not accurate to the midterms or final
This class was awful. He is an ok lecturer but the scope of his lectures was not comparable to the test material. He gives super easy examples in class and over complexes them on the test. This class ruined my chance to transfer. Avoid at all costs.
Eastman is very helpful if you ask for help. The best way to pass this class is to ALWAYS go to class. The tests are very hard but you will do fine as long as you GO TO CLASS. If you miss class even once you are likely to be very lost. I also recommend always going to your section if you are confused. Most of the TA's are very helpful.
The 2 Midterms are not difficult as long as you attend class and complete the homework at a good pace. You never need the book. The online homework is honestly enough to teach yourself the concepts by using the examples and step by step hints. However his final was much harder than the midterms which I did not expect. So study for the final A LOT.
This is the only math class I ever took that left me feeling like I actually understood math conceptually. Eastman is a straightforward lecturer so he seems intimidating but go to office hours and you'll see him smile! He's willing to help you if you ask for help. Do the homework, go to class, and if you want that A then apply for ACE or MSI.
I had to go to MSI a few times inorder to pull off a B in the class. The material is tough and he goes through it very quicky, but doing the homework and reviewing the past tests is helpful. Also, I my TA discussion section was great, it helped to raise my grade because it accounted for 10% of my grade.
He is very clear about what will be on his exams. He gives out previous years exams to study off of. Do the practice exams and the real one should be much easier.
He doesn't seem to care about his students all , his lectures are dull as possible and his final exam was. Absolutely nothing like the study material , class literally gave me a nervous breakdown.
Honestly, he's one of the best math professors on campus. He seems to genuinely care about his students and does do a good job with explaining his material in lecture. But those exams, it's a good thing he curves!
Professor Eastman is a great professor as long as you are willing to put in the effort to learn. He only gives two tests (one midterm, one final) but they are pretty hard. If you do not show up to most of the lectures and put in the time to study outside of lecture, you will have a hard time passing. However, he is very clear on the material taught
I honestly liked eastman a lot. His tests are not as bad as most people say. He puts up a few old tests, and the majority of your actual test will come straight from those besides one or two curve ball questions which is generally where students lose points. Average on our mid term was a 70.5 but the final was a bit harder. Decent curve as well.
I EXTREMELY love this class because of the nice professor and TAs. I even wanna change my major to pure mathematics due to this amazing class!!
On the midterm, the curve was set at a 53% with 40-50 of them failing it. If you study and go to office hours, it can really help.
His tests are really tough. If you do the review problems, make sure you really understand it. Ask for help when you need it. Grades were based on quizzes, homework, one midterm, and one final.
He's a fine teacher, but if this is your first time taking calculus your probably only going to "get" the information from your ta. He is neither engaging, nor good at making new formulae easy to grasp.
This class was hard! Eastman is a nice guy and he is helpful in office hours, but you'll have to wait in a long line to talk to him. His lectures are very boring and confusing. I worked really hard in this class and still failed. A lot of the class failed the curve was set at 43% for one of midterms. Avoid him there are better math 3 proffesors
Good professor but as most math lectures, they are long and filled with lots of notes. He likes to go fast and chug on so go to class and make the most of it. Sections were mandatory w/quizzes but TA got to grade and give extra credit.
Class was pretty ok. His midterm was pretty predictable based on the past midterms he posts, but the final was something else. There was one curveball question on the final that stumped a lot of students. Curve for midterm was set at 60%. Study the material before the midterm and final and you'll be fine. Make sure to attend discussion for quizzes!
I put in 110% and still failed. Went to section, MSI, and office hours. His tests are hard.
If you go to every section, take heavy notes, and review, you can pull off a B. The final and midterm have questions from concepts that you know how to do but with a really weird function. I got a C+, skipped alot of lectures, and watched Patrickjmt. He is a super fun lecturer, wished I would have tried harder.
I really wouldn't recommend taking his class if you haven't already taken calculus in high school
Eastman knows the material, and knows how to teach it. He clearly explains the process to solve a problem, as well as the why behind it, but he only does this on initial problems to a new concept, and doesn't repeat this level of teaching in further examples. Know what you don't know, ask every "stupid" question you have, and you'll do well
He's a really good professor and knows the material extremely well. It's really important to go to class especially if you're maybe someone who is not proficient in understanding math out of the textbook. His TA's were also amazing! (shout out to Gabe Martins!) To be honest, the material was interesting and sometimes enjoyable to learn. goodluck!
Eastman was a great professor! I honestly don't know why there were so many negative reviews. Attendance was not mandatory and I skipped so many of his lectures (mostly because it was an 8am and it was hard to get up that early). 1 midterm (super easy) just do the practice one, and 1 final (a little harder). Do the hw and you should be fine!
I thought Eastman was a clear and concise lecturer and that his tests were fair. His tests were challenging, but they were all based on key material. He also curves the tests as the average is usually in the 60s. Overall this class is not easy, but it is not impossible either; I would take it again.
I had him Fall Quarter 2016 for Math 11A and I ended up failing the class! The midterm was ok but the final was super difficult. He never went over problems that difficult in class nor were they that bad on the homework. From my own personal experience and from what I hear others say, he is the last professor you want to take!
The professor is pretty funny and informative about the material that we cover, and he tells us in advance what we should study for the midterm and final. He's still pretty hard, though, so you really need to work to do well in his class. Fortunately, his notes are uploaded online, but that doesn't mean you should skip lecture.
Light on homework, textbook not really needed. His lectures are super helpful, and he posts EVERYTHING you need to know online. Class notes, schedule of lectures, MSI and TA information, supplemental practice problems, etc. I'm terrible at math but this class was cool.
Your grade is 30% midterm, 45% final, 25% everything else. The midterm and final are pretty tough, but he posts past midterms/finals online and if you study those you should be fine. Lectures are pretty good and he posts all the lecture notes online. study hard for tests, go to sections for quizzes and you should do fine.
Eastman is a great lecturer- he goes over stuff in depth and shows difficult problems in lecture. This is balanced out by his brutal exams. He tells you what is going to be on them, but they are all the most tricky questions from each section. Study, and go to class, and you can pass no problem.
Okay so I forgot to link my ucsc email to the webbing so I didn't get credit for my homework which is 20% of your grade. Eastman is honestly just rude, he makes people feel stupid for asking questions. His lectures weren't that hard to follow, but for his test he does throw in some stuff that wasn't covered in depth in the class. Go to section!
Really great guy and really nice. Especially easy course for incoming freshman like myself who already took AP Calculus in high school. I didn't go to lectures more than five times throughout the quarter, but discussions are mandatory. Great TA's while I was there
He's one of my favorite math teachers/professors that I've ever had. I loved him and this coming from someone that math isn't their strongest or favorite thing. The class is really hard but that's because the material is. He's such a good lecturer. Knows how to explain things really well. Go to section. CONSISTENTLY study. Do not blow the midterm.
Eastman is an okay teacher. His lectures aren't anything special so prepare to go to MSI and extra tutoring a lot to clarify everything. His midterm and final is very hard, but he will sometimes curve. Will admit I failed my final but he curved it so I passed the class. Too much homework though. Don't fall behind and do extra textbook problems
Honestly one of the more enjoyable math teachers I've had. Tests were incredibly fair, especially because he tells you most of the topics that will be on the midterm and final. He's a good lecturer and does a lot of practice problems during class making the topics understandable. Overall class wasn't that hard.
He's an okay-ish one. Avoid if you can but it's not the end of the world if you end up with him. Try to quickly get through WebAssign hw and focus MORE on the optional textbook questions. That's where the midterm/final questions come from. Read my last two sentences AGAIN. And, don't screw up the midterm.
His lectures are pretty fast paced and you don't really have time to process any of the information before you copy it down. His midterm and final were pretty tough with unforgiving curves. Avoid if possible.
He seems enthusiastic about math, but he's got a condescending attitude about it. His midterm and final are pretty tough compared to the practice midterms, so make sure you do those like four times. ACE and youtube are the only reasons I passed this. I took 19A and 19B with him, he failed me for 19A though so watch out for those midterms.
Eastman is a really nice human, but his precalculus class is very hard. Lots of mandatory online assigned homework, but all test questions come from doing optional problems out of the test book. Pros: Posts all materials online, nice during office hours, funny during lecture. Cons: Tests are the hardest, so much hw, explanations are quick.
I was scared of taking MATH22 after a long break from CALC. The midterm was very similar to the practice midterm but final was WAY harder (and worth 45% of the grade). Lots of homework that counts only 10% and mandatory sections. Overall I would take him again but put more effort. I never attended lectures and got a C.
Mark gives good lectures that demonstrate various ways of arriving at concepts. His tests are way more difficult than his homework, but he's good at explaining concepts and illustrating things in various ways.
Math is the hardest subject for me and Eastman did NOT make me feel supported at all. I would approach after class with questions, and he would make me feel dumb. I find most math professors don't understand that math is tough for most students. Get outside help or wait for another prof. Had to retake.
MATH3. Pretty easy. Don't have to go to class every time. Clear hand writing. Great lecture.
This was my second time taking math 19A, however he was WAY better than the professor i had before. He was organized which made it good to understand the material. His tests are difficult, but he gives you two exams from previous years to study from. Definitely need to work hard for this class but you'll do good if u put in the effort.
Honestly, he is a good teacher but the final exam is way harder than the practice finals he gave us. Midterm was about the same level of difficulty but final was way harder. Plus he only curves for C's and not A's and B's.
Class wasn't too difficult in the beginning. Homework and midterm are easy, but final was extremely difficult. Funny professor however and did make lecture more interesting. Just b/c his lectures are online does not mean you should skip lecture. I honestly only learned how to do specific problems from his lectures. Overall not a bad class.
His lectures are rarely boring and he has neat handwriting. He speaks clearly, tries to make jokes, encourages questions. He does move pretty fast but he offers office hours after every lecture. For Math 11A, he only had one midterm could be seen as good or bad. GO TO MSI! it'll help tons. posts past exams for you to practice and hold a review.
I was terrified by all the comments of, "won't pass without taking calc in high school" Well I didn't and still passed, with an A. Do the homework, even the optional. Study and go to office hours, it is possible!! Midterm/Final is fair, nothing too crazy. It may not seem like it at first but Eastman is a good professor, compared to others...
Concepts aren't really explained, just written down (if that makes sense). Tests are really difficult. Definitely go to MSI and outside help if needed then you should be fine. Go to lecture! The sheer volume of information in the textbook is difficult to learn on one's own, and not all of it is attributed to in lecture.
Eastman teaches one of the most universally hated subjects (math) and still has a 3.8 rating at the time of writing, which means that he is actually a great prof. His lectures are clear and concise with a little humor sprinkled in, tests are fair, homework load is very reasonable as well. As long as you pay attention and do work you'll be fine.
The material is not too difficult but Professor Eastman is by far the worst professor I have had in my academic career. He will test you on material that has not been gone over in class or covered in practice material for midterms and finals. If you aren't great at math or willing to put in double the time into studying for a single class stay away
Material wasn't too difficult, Eastman covered concepts well and thoroughly. Notes came in two formats, printed outline and written full notes, both available online. Found explanations to be repetitive at times, but this could be a positive in a more difficult class where concepts take more repetition to understand. Did not feel approachable.
His lectures are clear, useful, and enjoyable. On the contrary, his exams are all long free responses. He curves it every time. However, he tells you what will be on the exam a week before the real exam. Exams are absolutely tough, but he is an excellent teacher.
He was an extremely good lecturer and explained the material really well. He does webcast but I strongly recommend going to class. Also, as others have said his tests are hard. Be prepared for harder problems than are on homework and that you do in section. Do the previous tests he puts out as they are similar to the test. Would highly recommend.
He does not know how to teach. His only job is to be able to teach students, but he can't even do that. He also gives lots of homework. Don't take a course with him, unless you have no other choice.
He's test is hard. No body in our class get a perfect score on midterm. Be aware.
really hard midterm!!
Professor Eastman does not teach in his lectures in any way shape or form. He seems like a nice guy, but he absolutely does not care about his students learning the material, let alone passing the class. The lectures are a joke, homework is a breeze, practice midterms make no sense, and actual tests barely correlate AT ALL to anything.
Eastman isnt a very great lecturer, and often makes jokes that maybe arent so appropriate. Seems as if he doesnt care too much about his students, and can be very condescending in office hours. Only graded base off of one midterm, weekly hw, and final.
Eastman's examples in class are easy, the homework is somewhat difficult and the exams are ridiculously hard. If you aren't already GREAT at math, don't take this class, you won't do well. Eastman seems like a pretty okay guy, but he does not at all prepare you for the difficulty of the class.
Eastman's lectures are really great - he thoroughly explains the concepts and also explains the proofs behind different formulas. Although his exams are hard, he gives multiple exams from the last that are very similar to the exams he gives so if you study those you should do fine. Homework isn't easy but if you do it, it helps your grade a bit.
He's a great teacher and is always willing to help students when they ask for it. His midterms and finals are extreamly hard but he has a nice grading curve. If you spend time to study for his class you will pass the class.
Nice guy overall, the homework isn't hard but you should definitely do the extra problems in the textbook it will help for the exams. The test are hard but he does give you a cheat sheet. I wouldn't say he deserves all the bad rep that he gets its a hard class already but he definitely covers all the material in a clear and organized way.
Eastman is a good lecturer, fairly clear and super funny on occasion. My main issue (and a lot of other people's) is that his. tests. are. ridiculously. difficult. Do not study using homework problems. You should use the textbook questions he recommends. Good luck.
Literally, don't take any course with Eastman if you can avoid it. One of the worst professors I've had thus far. There's a decent amount of homework and the lectures aren't bad, but his tests are impossible. Not worth my time. I took this class as a major requirement thinking precalculus wouldn't be that hard, and he made it unbearable.
Eastman uses webcast and uploads his notes, but they are sometimes difficult to read because of his handwriting. While the material was not too difficult, I felt my grade was hurt due to how long his exams were considering the time given. Notecards were allowed for his exams. Section attendance is mandatory.
He's a nice guy and his lectures were actually good. His voice and style made it easy to pay attention. But, If you think you know what you're doing, you won't think that anymore after the tests. I studied for 5 hours for the second midterm and I still got 57%. Luckily he curves them and the overall grade, but I really thought I was going to fail.
Here's the problem with Eastman, he doesn't use any generic online platforms(canvas, piazza...) except his own janky website. So it was very hard to reach out to others in the class and have questions answered for homework outside of office hour. You used to have a nice score on this site, I think that made you got too cocky.
This was the worst class Ive ever taken at UCSC. He is nice enough but is extremely hard for no reason. He makes the tests way too difficult and theyre not even based off the homework. He doesnt teach you to understand why, just to memorize. I studied hard for this class with other students who also did extremely poorly because of the difficulty
