great teacher funny and helpful. offers study sessions on tuesdays at night which can really help and also has pratice exams on the web.
having a lil chem background will help you through the class, cover alot of material in short period of time, but most is review if you've had chem in h.s.
Nice guy but never gets problems right on the board. Students usually figure them out before he does.
He is a really nice guy! He kind of looks like kermit the frog, but its cute.
Had him for 212 and 213. labs arent hard just time consuming, but he does screw up word problems on the overhead.
A little hard but very nice guy and very understanding.
Sucks at teaching...can't explain worth a damn, makes lab work unclear, but is a very nice person, good personality.
engen is da bomb
kinda a sucky teacher so take the class w/ friends so you can study and learn the material together. nice and funny guy though. tests only worth bout 20 points and he throws one out. quizzes are all partner quizzes, adn easy grader!
He's a nice guy, doesn't always get things right in class, his student point out mistakes all the time but is willing to help you any way he can when you are having trouble!
In class he goes over the notes really well, and he gives really good examples that are usually on the tests. His tests are fairly hard, but if you study you should have no problem. He's a really nice guy, easy to talk to, and very helpful.
Yeah he does mess up sometimes on the board. Labs aren't that clear. Very nice though.
His tests are hard...be prepared. Explains the notes very carefully which is really nice...if you don't understand it right away. Very very nice person. Labs are lengthly and do take a while to complete. Overall, he's a good professor! Would recommend!
Lectures are very thorough and interesting. Exams can be challenging but he gives you a couple of previous exams to practice with. Labs are good and usually finish in under two hours.
Easy notes, he also posts them online. Sometimes he does mess up on the overhead. His tests can be tricky. Overall, he is a good pick.
He is a very nice guy and willing to help whenever. His tests are tricky but if you can go to his review sessions, do it! Overall, I'd recommend him!
He's the worst professor ever! He's too scattered to get the problems right on the overhead and he never explains what he's going to put on the exams. Practice exams don't help. He's a very nice guy but he's not fit to teach such a big class.
He's a nice guy and very helpful. Sometimes I question if he knows exactly what's going on. His tests are very hard but if you go to the "study sessions" he has, you should do fine!
He makes the class difficult and doesnt have the best teaching ability but he is a really nice guy and usually does something that will bump your grade up one notch throughout the semester.
Very helpful at study sessions. His tests are very hard, but that's how the material is. Stick with it, he's a pretty good prof.
Mr. Engen is sooo cute! He's so sweet and he is very heplful. Study off the review tests and you'll do fine. Hardly any out of class assignments. Just go to lecture and lab and you'll be fine.
Engen is the greatest! His classes are fun and you learn alot. I'm dreading my next chem class because Engen doesn't teach it! PS. Try to get both lab and lecture with Engen it's far easier.
Real nice guy, curved our final exam like 40%, barely any out of class work, all assignments are in class, so don't skip out. Labs usually took about an hour and a half, get him for lab. he has sample tests on the internet which help out a lot
Pretty easy...nice guy.
good guy, chemistry is not my thing, but I got through it ok. Hes really helpful if you're lost. Tests are kind of tough, but I think that the class as a whole was tough...just read the book and go to class.
He's a very nice guy.. Helpful whenever you needed something answered. All work is basically done with online homework and in-class assignments. Really easy to listen to and not boring.. I would definitely recommend him!
Challenges you but very interesting. Professor is very nice and helpfull.
He's a good guy and his class is pretty good. Online assignments are nice because you can keep working on them and know what is correct and incorrect and can change the answers. Tests are difficult if you don't study the material well. Labs are really easy, but you have to do well on the write ups. Overall very good teacher.
Class is hard but I hate chemistry. He's a really nice teacher and will help you with any questions you have. Labs help your grade and on-line assignments take awhile to work on them ahead of time!!!
He has a very likable personality and is willing to explain things to those who don't undestand. Reminds me of Bill Nye the Science Guy, which is good since I learned a lot from him too. If you go to the lectures and pay attention, you should get a good grasp on the subject matter. Make sure to study for the test. It's 60% of the final grade.
Laid back and Easy, tests are harder so study
He is an awesome teacher! Easy to understand and easy grading scale! 88% for an A woohoo!!
His class isn't that hard if you take notes and pay attention. His tests are really hard but to put that off this grading scale is 76% is a B and 88% an A. H e also drops one of the 3 test before the final.
Professor Engen is such a good professor. He is very helpful; if you don’t get something go ask he does help. He will try explaining it differently so you can understand what he is saying. His tests are hard but if you study and do the practice exams online it is not to bad. Great professor and great guy, take his classes.
he is a wonderful teacher who grasps how to use technology to its full advantage and is always available and approachable if you need help
He is just toooooooooo good, the best professor that i ever had ........easy A , just go classes regularly, exams are easy too if you are attentive in class and do the suggested problems
best professor that Winona sate had and will ever have. must take easy A extremely helpful. be in class for in class assignment and study for exam, you will get good grade. must take professor.
cool dude. A bit scatterbrained at times but he knows what he is talking about and keeps things interesting.
I HATED this class. He is not a teacher if you actually want to understand chemistry in the end. The final exam is cumulative from the whole year and its standardized (it is for all the 212 213 classes) but i didnt learn anything in this class and he is horribly boring and doesnt answer questions worth crap.
This guy has NO IDEA what he's talking about. When you ask questions he stutters and avoids them. Horrible professor, never take him.
Nice guy, easy class if you do the online homework. Make sure that you pay attention in class. If you come to class and do the homework you will not have a problem with him. He's a great professor.
Pretty nice guy, just a tough class. Keep up with the online homework for sure. He goes through the powerpoints super quick so follow along. Doesn't answer questions well. [Also has a funny Canadianish accent and nice eyes]
Professor Engen is an awesome guy, he has a great personality and can make you laugh. But his tests can get a little on the difficult side and he also has in class assignments which you really should not miss either.
Professor Engen is a very helpful professor if you go to him for help. He knows the material very well. His lectures can be hard to follow if you dont read the book. The exams are difficult if you dont study for them.
Dr. Engen is an ok professor. His lectures can be hard to follow and his exams will be difficult if you dont study a lot for them. I would suggest going in for help as much as you can if you dont understand what you are doing. He is willing to help. He wants to you succeed but you really have to work for it. I would recommend him.
Professor Engen is a good teacher just make sure that you take notes, do a majority of the online homework (it is very helpful), and ask questions if you are stuck. Make sure to study-they are multiple choice and usually 14-20 questions and you can use a notecard. He also drops your lowest test and labs aren't that hard if you meet his requirements
He is a very good professor! He really know his stuff and cares about the students. During lab, he interacts with the students and is very knowledgeable. I respect him a lot and recommend taking him if you can!
I had miertschin for 212, and I love both her and engen. They are the best Chem teachers at Winona. Engen is easy to understand, and labs actually make sense! He is a kind of difficult grader with lab reports though. You get a notecard for tests which is nice. Homework takes forever, so do a little each night instead of waiting til its due.
Good teaching but hard class.
Very good professor.Online homework a bit difficult but you only need to do half to get full credit.Strongly recommend him.
Professor Engen is a very easy professor. His tests are MUCH easier than the homework. He also gives out extra credit for doing more than 75% of the homework (but it is long). He has very short tests that I found to be very reasonable. I would definitely recommend him!
Great professor, just a really hard class. If you are not all that good at chem to begin with then you will struggle. He is straight forward. HE teaches you how to do the problems and allows for in class time to do some practice problems. He then assigns hw on exactly what you did in class. pretty straight forward.
Really good teacher and easy to pay attention in class to. Nice guy and very helpful in labs. Easy grader on homework as well, but does have random in class assignments.
Dr. Engen is an excellent professor. He explains everything with absolute clarity and has reasonable expectations. You'll find that you'll have more trouble with CHEM 213 than you did with 212. But, Dr. Engen is very helpful in his office hours. Now, don't think that you'll pass if you don't study. You need to study a lot for this class. The tests are designed to make it so you can't guess. You either know the material or you don't. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed his class and he is very nice.
He is a very good professor because at the beginning of every lecture he goes quickly over some main points that we all talked about at the last lecture. He has in class assignments though, so being in class will help your grade.
Professor Engens tests are way too hard. I studied for 10 hours with a tutor and still received a failing grade on the test. Stupid mistakes will kill you in this class. Keep up with the homework because you can earn .000005 points of extra credit.Nothing talked about in class is on the test, but go to class because he does in class assignments.
If you like doing homework on a Friday or Saturday night....take this professor. He assigns online homework that is due at 4am on Saturday morning. His tests a huge part of the grade, but they are only worth 10 points... so if you get 4 wrong looks like you failed. Lectures very boring. Overall did not enjoy this class at all. Don't take 213 with.
I was thoroughly impressed with his level of enthusiasm and how he helps his students. His tests are fair, and the homework was all online. I would recommend him for any science major student.
Great knowledge on the subject. Tests were not hard. Was very clear in explaining practice problems and lectures
This class is really hard if you don't pay attention and take good notes. Homework absolutley sucks. He has a really good sense of humor and having in lab is super fun.
He's seriously my favorite teacher. I'm not a big fan of chem but he made it fun and easy to understand. Seriously if you just go to class you won't have a problem in this class. Show up and pay attention and its pretty much an easy A. If you have the option of taking him DO IT! He is an amazing lecture teacher and an even better lab professor.
Best Chemistry Professor ever!!!! He made me like Chemistry! :)Lots of examples done in lecture.
Great professor, very helpful in lectures and in labs. Attendance is not mandatory but he has mini quizzes during randomly throughout the semester, so attendance is recommended. Class is made about as easy as it will get for chemistry thanks to him.
He is the world's most boring professor. He practically blends into the wall. Don't take unless you want to spend 3 hours doing homework on a Friday night.
Somewhat boring, but take good notes and you'll do fine.
He's a pretty boring teacher, but he knows what he's talking about. His tests are based pretty much exactly on the lectures, so if you show up to class and listen, you'll pass. I'm taking him again next semester for CHEM 213.
Good professor, very helpful in lab. Keep subjects fresh in mind before test. Exams are fairly hard.
Out of all the professors that teach Chemistry 213, he is the most recommended by students on campus. His exams cover exactly what would be expected. He is willing to help with any homework questions in class. The content of the course was explained in a clear fashion.
Engen is a great professor! He goes through the material a good pace and explains all on the concepts very thoroughly.. there is a good amount of homework but you only have to do 50% of it to get full credit so it really helps you out if you do not understand a problem. He also give partial credit on his exams! Would definitely take again and again
Engen is seriously one of my favorite professors. He gives you practice tests to study with, and it is pretty much the same exact thing as the test you will take with different numbers. His labs although give you 3 hours never last more than 2, so you always leave early which is a plus.
Really good at explaining
He was very monotoned at first, i didn't really like him the first couple weeks. But as you get to know him, i started to enjoy his humor more. He's great one on one
Dr. Engen is a super nice professor. He makes it very easy to get an A in his class. He has a lot of online homework but you only have to do 50% of it to get an A and 75% is extra credit. His practice exams are almost identical to the real exams which makes getting an A pretty easy. Would definitely recommend him!
Overall, Engen is a good professor. He gives out homework, but a fair amount. Plus, doing the homework is very helpful for the tests. He will do practice problems on the board which basically match up on what you do in the homework.
This class is not challenging as long as you show up for class (yes you have to show up for lecture. There are a good amount of things that he covers that are not written in his notes. ) As long as you understand the homework, you will do fine on the exams.
Mark is a great guy and a great teacher. He does a great job of teaching the material and making it easy to understand. He is approachable, too. It is not really necessary to go to lecture because all of his slides are posted and he does not waver from them much. His tests are straightforward and he also offers a extra credit in homework
Dr. Engen is a great professor, extremely glad that I took him for Chem II. An A is definitely attainable, the one thing about his exams is that they aren't worth a ton of points, so solving one problem incorrectly can hurt you quite a bit, however he's a relatively easy grader. EC is offered on homework, and exams aren't too tough
Make sure to attend all lectures. I missed a few and it was very difficult to catch up. He provides examples of problems, that are not in his online notes, that are basically copy and paste from the homework
Lecutures are not madatpry, but I highly recommend going as he takes most of the time to do practice problems on everything you need to know for the test. Hes an amazing prof and tries very hard to make sure everyone is succeeding in his class.
Attendance is not mandatory but definitely helps. Super easy to follow and explains things really clearly. Easy to pay attention as he has an interesting tone of voice. He was my favorite professor first semester freshman year, would definitely recommend!!
I had him for both 212&213. He's a really nice guy but be prepared to study! Tests 45% of your grade and lab is 20%. Lab isn't too bad and concepts talked about in lab will show up on the exams. There is a lot of hw and sometimes it's helpful sometimes it's not. HW is 15% so be prepared for lots of reading and assignments. EC is given w/ extra hw
As chemistry professors go, Engen is a great choice. Still test heavy with 4 exams and a final but he is there is you need help and goes into lots of detail to explain things in lecture. If you have to take chemistry, go with Engen.
He is the one who made me like Chemistry, He is very easy to approach and responds to every question you have. If you are having difficulties in Chemistry, Dr. Engen is your best choice.
Engen is a great professor overall, he's actually known to be one of the smartest and got offered jobs at Ivy leagues. Respect that. He gives a decent amount of homework, but you can get extra credit for it. Study for tests and show up to class and you should do well.
Easily the worst professor at WSU. People who understand chemistry already love his class. However, if you are confused, you're screwed. He fails to respond to emails (I have sent at least four), refuses any extra credit, makes the tests extremely hard, and doesn't work through problems. One person will shout an answer and he will move on.
I personally struggle with chem, what helped me most was spending hours outside of class studying. Very clear grading, lecture does not match with exams a whole not, only 2 available extra credit points. 4 exams, weekly-ish quizzes and a final. Labs were a bit difficult. He is very helpful during office hours, must be willing to put in the work.
The worst prof I've had. He will hear an answer that was yelled out and move on. He refuses to give extra credit, doesn't go over problems, makes the tests nothing like the practice test, and gives poor feedback. Unless you fully understand chem, you won't pass his class. These other ratings must've been from people who understand chem. AVOID HIM!!
Great class, if you show up to class, do your homework and go to labs you will do great on tests and in the class overall. Lectures were easy to understand and follow along with, it is a lot of homework but he gives almost a week to complete the assignments. Tests are not that difficult as long as you study and do your work.
Actually knows the material, and teaches it well. Does not make you do all of the homework to get a good grade on it. Highly recommend this professor
Straight to the point in his lectures and the tests strictly follow what you learn in class. There is a sizable amount of homework but he gives you extra credit just for completing 50% of the assignments. Great professor for people who struggle in chemistry but have to take the course
The professor has a specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be manageable. Attendance helps, and using resources like the textbook and Unstuck AI for study prep can make a big difference.
After experiencing some other professors, Mark was pretty good. He's very organized and provides lots of content to help prepare for test. He records his lectures but I would still recommend going to class. His labs are easy but his lab reports are annoying. good beginning teacher. He does NOT respond to emails though
he's honestly really sweet and super helpful (especially in lab)! he has SO many resources available for you to succeed (zoom lectures, office hours, recorded lectures, posts slides, practice exams, & more:)) you also get a double sided notecard on exams! only thing is that his lectures can get pretty boring
I loved coming to Chem because he formatted the class great. 4 exams with a note card, spontaneous ICA, just needed to do homework score didn't matter, lab was fun, and he was super understanding. He also dropped one of the worst score in each category. I loved his teaching style and wish I had him second semester.
