I had him for his first semester teaching and he was very helpful. He relates everything to the outside world and really wants you to pass. He is a very nice man and a good teacher. He puts all his assignments and powerpoints online.
The man is fantastic.I had him for lab and he is helpful and approachable. He lets students use all hand-written notes from a notebook for pre-lab quizzes(so read that lab manual and take lots of notes). He also posts study guides/slides for lab tests on the course web page that are extremely helpful. It also helps that he is genuinely happy
This teacher was terrible. I tought my self Biology all semister.
Dr. Farinha is a decent guy and he does want the students to do well. My main complaints are; the homework rarely related to the chapter that we were studying and his final exam was completely out of left field, and unlike all of the other exams he gave.
His explanations on difficult topics hard to understand. The homework he assigned was to be turned in the day before the test, and you didn't get it back till after the test so you didn't know if you were correct with the material. The tests were designed to really make you think (trick you) and some of the questions were from left field.
Decent teacher, had a hard time passing this class, but i got a c,he drops one assignment if you don't do it. lectures are boring, just read the chapters and have other bio teacher there for backup if you need help
I had Farinha for Microbiology Lecture and Lab. He is wonderful!! One of the best! He gives powerpoint study guides which help so much. He is very funny and relates everything to the real world. It is a hard class so you really need to study to get an A. I got a B, but could have easily gotten an A if I tried a little harder.
Great professor! He's an easy guy to talk to and he is always willing to help. To do well in his class I would recommend ppl to sit up front because he does not speak that loud. Other than that he grades fairly.
awsome teacher! he is very soft spoken but he knows what he hes talking about. gives extra points all the time on quizzes
LOVE HIM! He's a great professor...work your butt off and study and you'll do great.
Dear Dr. Farinha! Most helpful if you can make it to his office hours, especially since the poor fellow is soft spoken. Extremely knowledgeable and his "Far Side" humor is hilarious, mostly appreciated by his older audiences. I loved this professor and am taking him again for another class!
A really smart professor- obviousely a lot of varied experience in the field of microbiology. Pretty funny and definitely a fair grader with fair expectations.
I love him!! Try and get him for lecture and lab if you can because he is a great teacher!
GREAT PROFESSOR. VERY FAIR WITH GRADES AND HIS EXPECTATION OF STUDENTS. PRINT OUT POWERPOINT FOR USE IN TAKING CLASS NOTES. ONLINE QUIZZES PREPARES YOU WELL FOR INCLASS EXAMS. HE VERY APPROACHABLE IF YOU NEED HELP. I LIKED HIM SO MUCH I AM TAKING BIO 223 WITH HIM. WORK HARD AND YOU WILL BE REWARDED.
AWESOME professor! Class was very easy and he taught exactly what he said he would teach. SO glad i had him for BIO.
If you are used to getting A's, don't take it with this man because you won't. I could write a novel about everything I disliked about him. I studied for hours everyday and came out with a D. Maybe he just didn't like my class since everyone else gave him good reviews but he used our class as guinea pigs and it was wrong because WE suffered for it.
Took professor Farinha for Microbiology. All test information comes directly from his powerpoint lectures; if he writes something additional to the powerpoint notes during the lecture, you will be tested on it. Lab midterm/final was fine if you can answer the review sheet. Final was cumm. and written by department head-different then his tests.
very boring class. but work is fairly easy. online quizzes that you can take 2 times and use the best grade. everything is powerpoint so you just have to print them out. do the reviews and study and youll do fine.
GREAT PROFESSOR!HIM FOR BIO 101 ALSO. YOU NEED TO STUDY THE POWERPOINTS AND READ THE TEXTBOOK. AN "A" IS VERY ACHIEVABLE WITH A LITTLE DEDICATION TO THE SUBJECT. HE MADE THE LAB VERY ENJOYABLE. HE IS VERY KNOWLEDGABLE ON THE SUBJECT AND REALLY ENJOYS TEACHING IT. VERY APPROACHABLE IN CLASS/OFFICE WITH QUESTIONS. VERY FAIR GRADER GIVES EXTRA CREDIT.
I did not like this professor. I had him for micro lab and he would not help me at all. I am a straight A student, but I was having issues with some micro tests in this lab and he basically laughed at me and told me to guess. Also, he does not explain things well, he just kind of says, here is the equipment...do it. Don't take for lab!!!
He made lecture enjoyable. He made things somewhat understandable. Print out his powerpoint lecture slides and if he writes something additional on them, know that! His tests are really hard, use the study guide and you should do okay! Overall, he is a nice, somewhat funny guy, he definitely knows the material!
Just finished taking his Summer Microbiology course and he is GREAT! I would not take this course with anyone else! The material is tough, of course but if you study your butt off and work really hard you will be fine. He relates the material to real world situations and breaks the material down so that everyone understands. TAKE HIM, LECTURE & LAB
Definitely recommend! Good professor with a sense of humor who is very knowledgeable and experienced! Know the powerpoints and you should be okay. Class requires alot of work and studying but a good grade is achievable.
He was an Ok professor. I just finished his summer microbiology class. Lab was awesome and really easy! He pretty much laid out everything that would be on the test. Lecture was absolutely terrible! The tests were very hard to understand and his powerpoints did not elaborate enough His test questions weren't even complete sentances Not recommended
Great teacher--he's moody but very funny in a cynical way. Go to class, do all the assignments, and study hard and there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't get an A. He also gave extra credit points at the end of the semester. It's your own fault if you don't get an A. Lecture and lab tests were fairly easy if you studied his handouts.
GO TO CLASS! He uses power points but adds to them during lecture so you really need to be there. You also will need to study but not too terribly hard if you pay attention and take notes! He has worked in the field and is very knowledgeable about micro. He is a good teacher and grades very fairly. I would def. recommend.
had him for biology and he was very difficult however he has a great understanding of the field and has a successful history as a scientist. though it was difficult i still enjoyed his class, but his class does require a lot of study time. his tests are difficult.(ask if he will let the class use an index card for test it will be very helpful.

I only have him for lab but I recommend him. Lab is easy and he wants us to succeed. He is aware most people are taking the class because it is required for some programs (nursing) but he still jokes about how to become a good "microbiologist". His midterm exam was easy & was mutiple choice (so no need to memorize spelling). Nice lab teacher!
Clear, concise, and quick, he was always dead on the Mark. His personification of chemical processes was endearing and helped teach the class. Lot of work and information, but that's what the class was supposed to be.
I enjoyed his class. Has a great sense of humor, and does a great job relating the class to the outside world. I highly recomend him for both Lecture and Lab.
Great guy. Funny and helpful, gives you everything you need (study guides, lots of time between due dates to complete assignments) talks fast. Lets lab out early often.
EXCELLENT professor, I would recommend him to everyone. He relates everything to the "real world" and has a sense of humor. He wants you to pass and will help you get there. I wasn't interested in the material, but I considered changing my major because of him.
He was very helpful and he enjoyed teaching biology. Overall its a hard course so be prepared to study.
LOVE HIM. He is a great teacher, very knowledgeable and funny too. Lecture tests are tough but it's a hard class. His lab is the best! He's way more laid back than other lab instructors, from what I hear. I was terrified for this class and I'm walking out with an A. Sit up front in lecture, the microphones in the lecture hall SUCK.
GREAT INSTRUCTOR!! Makes a hard subject understandable and non-stressful. As long as you go to class and study you will succeed in his class. He is ALWAYS available to help. Teaches rather then reads notes to the class. Makes lecture & lab interesting and fun to attend. TAKE HIM FOR BOTH!!! You won't be sorry....
Great guy, great professor. Take him for lecture and lab. The material for this course is tough, don't expect it to be an easy class. But, put in the work and you can get an A. Save money and don't bother buying the book, exams are 100% from powerpoints.
Just finished with the summer class. Very good professor! Definitely knows what he's talking about. Lectures are not mandatory to attend but would highly recommend going! All material on tests come from his powerpoints and additional notes during lecture. Take him for both lab and lecture!!
Great sense of humor.
Best bio professor I've ever had. Very funny and easy to learn from. Keeps things interesting and really knows his stuff. Tests are strictly based on his power points. Curved exams and extra credit is offered. Would definitely recommend to anyone!
good teacher. A lot of information on tests.
(BIO 223) Was very disappointed with my class with him. I felt like he did not help at all. Went to him three times to ask how i can better prepare for his tests and he told me he didn't know how to study for this class. i met him in person to go over tests and he didn't say much and he went off on tangents in lecture. very stressful.
Challenging class but a great lecture and lab instructor. Only had homework for the labs and we were able to leave early most days. Also let me catch up,on a lab that i missed by stayin a few minutes later than expected. Very knwledgeable, would recommend if you feel like your ready.
I just had him for lab, but he was great! He was very clear with the pre-lab instructions, so if you listened you knew exactly what to do. The tests were pretty straight forward too. I definitely recommend taking him!
When I say this man knows his stuff he knows his stuff!! Take him if you want to learn and process mirco, the class is not easy but he makes it understandable and if you study and put in time you will pass. Took him for lecture and Lab, I got a B in both, passed the Class with a B. Funny guy who takes his shoes off to lecture lol.
Super funny! His lectures are great, print the powerpoints and make notes and you're golden. His tests are tough though, he offers study guides which help but you'll need to put in study time for sure.
Micro with Dr. Farinha is pretty basic--go to lecture, listen, take notes on slides, and you'll do well. You have to study quite a bit, but all tests are based solely on lectures. Lab helps with lecture and vice versa.
Test from PP and lecture (record this and reviw at home with notes and PP and youll get an A), take full advantig of the SI!
I have taken this class before and failed. I am so glad I got him as a professor when I retook it. Science is just something I cant understand, but I was able to pass his class. His quizzes were open book, taken online. There were not many tests, no homework. He allowed us to use a note page on the final. The quizzes saved me
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME! You would be CRAZY to take anyone other than him for lecture and/or lab. He makes a tough class enjoyable and brings it down to your level. He is a very intelligent man and knows it but isn't stuck up about it. His grading is very clear and as long as you study his PP slides you should be just fine! Had the best time in lab
Love this man! Micro was way easier than I thought because of him. His tests are very clear and if you record your lectures and listen to them you will know the answers . He made it interesting and I learned way more from this class than any other I have taken. No book needed. Super laid environment. May take again even though I'm done with prereqs
Took for both lab and lecture. Lab was super easy, but lecture was insanely difficult. Attendance isnt madatory but good luck passing if you dont attend. Tests were extremely difficult, you will have to work extremely hard. Gave study guides which were very confusing and not all that helpful.
Sooo there is nothing really good I can say about Dr. Farinha. A friend recommended but she warned me his lectures are HARD. Well I trusted her instinct, studied my butt off and by the second exam, I still had a 65%. His lab instructions never made sense, lecture notes were confusing. NEVER AGAIN.
Took him for Micro Lab and Lecture. Great in Lab, but would not recommend for lecture. He goes off on tangents and he includes questions in his tests that are not in his lectures/power points/study guides. Be prepared to put in a load of work if you take his lecture class. Nice guy and knows his stuff, just not great at lecturing.
Believe he's an adjunct professor. He is a real college professor. Not a high school teacher. Does not give a crap if you care. Doesn't Raz people for not paying attention. He just gives awesome lectures! Wish I had his charisma on podium. Incredible anecdotes, great explanations. Too easy on grading but you can't help but learn everything
Dr Farinha is pretty incredible. He has a a lot of experience in research most Cc profs don't. He obviously loves to teach. He's quirky. He gives great notes during lectures "you're responsible for everything on the slides" pre test quizzes are pretty much the exams. Grades easy. Simple multiple choice tests gleaned from the internet.
His egotistical introduction to the class pretty much said it all. Unnecessarily hard grading and acts like hes better than everyone. Also get ready to study for 24 quizzes/tests Ha and thats not including his lab.
Don't take his lectures theyre pretty difficult if you can choose, chose to take micro lab with him (easier than other professors) and take lectures with Loukides (her lectures are the easiest)
His quizzes and reading assignment are easy. His tests are extremely hard. I studied my ass off and didn't ever do as well as I wanted to. You HAVE to read the book and his power points to get a good grade on the tests. His study guides make no sense sometimes, but do them, they will be on the exam. I would suggest study groups as well or SI sess.
(Bio 223) Had him for lecture, but would not recommend. He goes off on tangents and includes questions in his tests that are not in his lectures/power points/study guides. Never clear on what you need to study and the study guides don't make sense. He is also a very hard grader so be prepared to put in a ton of work.
Engaging, fun, and meets outside of class time. Is fair and knowledgeable. The people who generally do not like his class are one or all of the following: 1. Lazy 2. Immature 3. Not serious about learning People who do not do well are: 1. Not putting study time in 2. Have heavy loads (other classes)
Great professor-knowledgable and tries to relate material to real life. Lecture is helpful, barely used the book (thank goodness I just rented it for $30), and the study guides arent really what is needed to pass (more info than what is needed). Use the PowerPoints, go to lecture, and ask questions. You will work for an A, but its doable.
Great for lab, not good for lecture. Goes on so many tangents during lecture, study guides are absolutely redundant to the material on the tests. Studied so hard and got mediocre grades
My first day of class I walked into lab and I was caring my phone and car keys in my hand (NOT ON MY PHONE) just carrying it, when I didn't even make it to my seat before he deducted 2 pts for having my phone "out".
I was really scared about Micro lab, but Dr. Farinha makes it really straight forward and easy. He guides you step by step and makes it hard for you to mess up He breaks it down simple for you. You can tell this is what he loves and he is very good at it. If you have to take Micro lab, take this one.
Brilliant mind. Anyone can learn from him, but he is not one to hold your hand so be prepared to pay attention and take good notes.
Tests and quizzes include material that was not mentioned in lecture or recorded presentations. You will fall asleep in class. Takes multiple classes to discuss each chapter that he condenses into 30 minute videos. Would not take again.
If you have to take a Micro Lab, take this one! Dr. Farinha's lab is very straightforward. Pay attention and it's too easy. Pre lab Exams are online and are extremely helpful. There are also study guides for Lab Exams.
I took Microbio lab and lecture with Professor Farinha and I love it so much because of him. He has a lot of real life experience as well as funny stories which helped me understand the material. He's really approachable, accessible outside of class, and knowledgeable on the subject + has a knack for passing his knowledge and passion to students.
Dr. Farinha is amazing! I only dropped his class because I did not need it for my program and was not doing well in another class. He is extremely smart, sassy and hilarous! Watch out if you get a perfect score on an exam... He goes out of his way to reward his students and although his comments are clever, he really encourages! Great Professor!
He was humorous in class, tried to make the class more exciting but his exams were very difficult, I wouldn't recommend taking him
Dr. Farinha was awesome! I took micro with him over the summer, and I ended up loving it more than I expected. He's really funny and sassy and tells great stories that relate to lecture. So happy he's not one of those profs who make the books mandatory! Thanks Dr. Farinha!!
I took his class in the summer and it was online. He is very simple. He has 4 exams which include a final exam, than he has little reading quizzes which are very easy. He recorded his lectures and than posted them on canvas to go back and look at them in more detail. He helps in any way possible. This was a great class and also easy.
Good teacher, made information to micro straight forward but enjoyable in a practical sense
Farinha is now one of my top 3 favorite professors. I took Micro in the Summer Online. He adapted to the new Online(CoVid) so well. You would have thought he had been teaching online for many years. His grading criteria is simple & direct as is his lecture style. He was easy to listen to. It might be just me but, he had me laughing out loud a lot.
Professor Farinha is a gem. I had it for lecture and lab. He goes above and beyond to make sure that the material his understood by his students. Do not hesitate to take his class. He provides you with everything you need to be successful. Just do your homework, listen to his recordings, study the study guides and you will be fine !
Dr. F's optional lectures and powerpoints were very helpful - so much so I didn't read the textbook & got an A on every exam. For my taste his lectures are very dry so it was difficult for me to stay focused, but the way he explains things just makes sense unlike the gibberish in the textbook. Overall I would take his class again!
Great Prof. You def need to watch all recorded lectures and powerpoints and you'll be golden. Had him for lab too, was a bit difficult due to shared quizzes between profs(they weren't his style of quizzes). Overall though I'd take him again! DO THE EXTRA CREDIT easy points! Labs are mandatory don't miss a quiz! Ask all the questions he will help.
Dr. Farinha is tough, but fair. You get out what you put in. I took Micro online and had a final grade of 93%. Records all lectures and even does a recorded unit review before each exam. Responds in a reasonable amount of time. The material is tough. but he lets you know exactly what you need to know and focus on. OH! He also gives study guides!
If you can get him for MICRO DO!!! He is one of the best professors i have had at AACC. This course is very hard but he explains things in a way you will understand. If you can get him for both lab and lecture you will pass!!!!
Not an enjoyable professor. Assignments and deadlines are vague and poorly documented, with Canvas going unused for the most part. Grades are not kept up to date. Will make passive aggressive or even just aggressive statements about individual student performance to the whole class. Tries to be funny, but is sorely not.
I loved his lecture and lab. He is clear and personable. He made me fall in love with Micro!
This professor made a tough class even more stressful. He has unclear deadlines. His teaching method is fast paced. He does not like to answer questions. He will be little you in front of the class. I excelled in this class by my own determination.
Prof. Farinha is bs free and goes to the point. His teaching is effective. Be ready to work, this is still a 4 credit science class, there's only so much teachers can do if you don't put any effort in.
He's okay I guess. His lectures are pretty straight forward. Powerpoint, quizzes and then the exam. He's good at explaining the subject but doesn't really give you opportunities to raise your grade if you mess up on a quiz or exam. Also, don't ask questions if you want to feel stupid. It seems like he thinks any question is stupid to him.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. It was clear he hated his job and saw this class as a nuisance. If you take this class, be prepared for sly remarks under the breath and material that does not correlate to the exams. This class started with around 20 people and ended with 12.
This is a hard class but very doable if you put the time in. Attending lecture is important but powerpoint slides are posted on canvas. Review videos, pre exam quizzes, and reading quizzes make up the rest of your grade besides exams and lab. Making quizlets/study guides will be extremely helpful or make a study group.
I took Dr.Farinha for Lab, He was hilarious and made MircoLab very easy and understandable. His PowerPoints were quick and he would write on the whiteboard just in case you forgot the procedure. The big thing, is you cannot make up quizzes.
he was passive aggressive and said things under his breath but also could be funny at times. He wasnt approachable at all in my opinion. Beware of the exam reviews. He might tell you to just know one thing from an exam review slide but study the whole slide no matter what he says.He was pretty relaxed when it came to late work.
Unprofessional. Says condescending things about other professors in front of students.
While as an individual Dr.Farinha is a very fun person to be around when it came to academics things became rather hard. Often would talk about personal experiences more than the actual topic at hand. Offered end of unit overviews but often didn't match up well with what was on exams. Has little assignments. Overall grade is from the 4 exams.
