Fink is a good guy and the class was relatively easy. He covered a lot of material but the tests didn't go into too much detail. As with most upper level science classes, he curved to a B+/A-.
The material and tests were difficult but Fink grades pretty easily so everyone made A's and B's. Buying the book isn't necessary, all test material came straight off the slides.
really nice guy, attending class is relatively unnecessary, he just reiterates what's on the slides. buy the book, homework and quiz candidates come straight out of the homework.
Nice guy. Do suggested problems and make sure to do very well on all your quizzes as they count for one test grade at the end and are easy to get hundreds on. Tests are straightforward and relatively easy. Best thing to do is go to ERC and have them run over everything with you a few nights before the test as class is pretty unecissary
attendance is completely pointless. tests are relatively easy, but extremely short so missing one question gives you a C. grading is inconsistent; sometimes you get most of your points for showing you at least understand or sometimes he'll take half off for getting the right answer but not doing all the work clearly
Easy class. Attendance not required. Just be very careful on the tests and quizzes. They are short so one mistake can cost you a good bit. Overall a nice teacher.
He reads directly off powerpoints slides for lecture and is not helpful in explaining the material. Teach yourself. His grading is very inconsistant and his curve made it physically impossible to get an A on two quizzes.
First of all, I got an A in his class, so I'm not just a student bitter about my grade. That being said, I think Fink is a bad teacher. He had one office hour a week, and the homework problems/class lectures do not reflect the material he tests on. That all makes the tests very interesting, and class averages were usually in the 40's.
He is a horrible teacher. I have never been so frustrated in my life. He does not explain is an overall useless teacher. Going to class is a waste of time. You might as well stay home and teach yourself. He takes everything exactly from the book, but paraphrases---making everything more difficult to understand. WASTE OF MY/YOUR TIME.
WORST TEACHER AT TULANE. Don't waste your time.
worst teacher ever. i am usually brilliant in chemistry and i struggled the enitre semester. the tests and quizzes are not on relevant info. his notes are straight out of the book. no point in going to class, you can teach yourself better.
Waste of time. Worst teacher at Tulane. I have never been so frustrated in my life. Every test is on nothing that he goes over in class. The tests are on the math problems in the book, that he doesn't go over in class. If you haven't previously taken Chemistry, don't even think about taking this class. He is in no way helpful or a good professor.
Fink is possibly the worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. I am NEVER the student to skip class but you might as just skip and teach it to yourself. I live in the tutoring center trying to understand the info. He reads straight from the powerpoints and his tests are hard. Don't take this class - you will regret it.
There is no reason to every go to class. The lectures are posted online, and are basically word-for-word from the text book. Quizzes are the same as the homework, and test as graded rather hard. He also is very hard to get ahold of and never respond to emails. I would recommend taking any chemistry professor EXCEPT for him.
Worst teacher ever. He reads straight from the powerpoints. All of the TA's grade differently. I put in so much time and am still not doing well. I'm actually killing myself over this. Don't do it. He sucks. It makes me hate my life.
Worst chemistry teacher. A lot of the Gen Chem teachers are "bad," but the students know what will be on the exams. Fink reads straight from the powerpoints, which are butchered versions of the text. The tests are hard, grading is all over the place, and he is not helpful at all. Don't take this class.
Worst teacher I have ever had. You might as well not go to class and teach yourself the information. Information on the tests sometimes can be completely random.
He's just bad. All he does is read powerpoint presentations (and not very good ones at that, they constantly have mistakes/inconsistencies with the book) and assigns problem sets with completely random questions. The tests have obscure information from the slides that seem completely trivial. Take Inorganic w/ Donahue or Schmehl. Unhelpful.
Even if chemistry is your strength, Fink somehow will find a way to make it a weakness. The lectures are read straight off of powerpoints that are barely intelligible. One strength of his is that he is very good at putting me to sleep:)
His "teaching" is reading the power points which he takes from the text book and not clarifying anything. He's not approachable, doesn't explain anything and expects you to already know chemistry. His tests consist of problems which he never goes over how to do in class and random abstract points from his power points. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!!!!
Fink only reads off of his powerpoint slides, and if you want to do well in the class, you need to pretty much teach yourself. His lectures are extremely boring, but his quizzes and tests are manageable if you put the time in.
he is one of the worst professors I've ever had. His lectures are boring and simply not helpful. The class quiz average usually was an F, which is absolutely unacceptable considering that a quiz grade is supposed to help your grade, not bring it down. I would avoid him at all costs.
Did not understand one work he said in class, but he tests and quizzes are not hard, they are pretty much just like the homework problems he assigns.
you will fail unless you are a genius
This is the WORST class you can possibly take for Gen Chem 1. The only reason I did not die in this class was because I took AP in high school. The powerpoints are straight from the textbook and the lectures are not helpful AT ALL. The tests are very tricky and are graded by the TAs, which causes discrepancies in grading. Avoid if you can.
Dr. Fink's lectures were very boring and not helpful at all. He rambles on during his lectures and it is very difficult to understand what he teaching. It is easier to understand the concepts by teaching yourself. I never knew what to study and it is impossible to guess what questions he will ask on the tests.
Fink is a pretty boring lecturer. You'll learn more from the textbook and Khan academy than you will just from class. Grading criteria is vague. Quizzes are straightforward if you do the homework. Tests are reasonably difficult, especially in the later chapters or if you don't have much of a chemistry background from high school. Avoid if possible.
One of the worst classes. Fink is not helpful and reads off of PowerPoints. Just teach yourself. The grading is messed up with z-scores, so you can end up with a lower grade than you actually got, and tests are tough. I did all the focus problems and still struggled. Beware of random multiple choice Qs worth 5 points, hope you're good at guessing
THE WORST PROFESSOR. So tough and doesnt respect students. If you go in during office hours he will laugh at your questions and dont even dream of asking them in person. If you are good at taking tests, this will be an okay course for you. However, If you struggle at all on tests-STAY AWAY
I got a 5 on the A.P. test and got a B in this class. Fink doesn't teach well and is of no help, but if you're willing to put the time in and work hard you will be fine. Definitely use the text book and get the solutions manual it will save your life.
Worst professor by far. Dr. Fink spends his whole lecture reading from a powerpoint that is taken directly from the textbook. He is not receptive to questions, does not respect his students, has infrequent office hours, and is unhelpful when you go. Every test contains at least one thing you have never seen before. Terrible. Avoid at all costs.
He's a decent Chem 1010 teacher. His tests aren't too bad if you study hard, and his quizzes are based off of homework problems. I didn't learn much during class and taught everything to myself. He gives options to drop a test or all of your quizzes and gives curves. If you have a chem background and study, then you can do well.
Not the worst but mainly reads off of powerpoint. Not receptive of questions and quizzes are straight up just the back of the book problems. Tests are usually fair but the final is absurd. Overall a passable class but definitely go for Lopreore if possible!!!
He wasn't so much a professor as a slide changer. He reads word for word from the power points, which are copied directly from the book. He answers questions poorly: He just repeats the slide he is on, even if it doesn't matter to the question, and continues. He had a single office hour which I couldn't make. I taught myself most of the material.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Mark Fink is the beign of my existence, and if that doesn't dissuade you from taking this class I don't know what will. his tests are HARD AND DUMB. have fun if you take this class, have fun.
Lectures are practically useless and incredibly boring; he ignores questions and never works out problems. You will end up teaching yourself most of the material. The solutions manual is almost necessary to do well - helps with homework and quizzes are taken directly from it.
Slide changer, does not work out problems, and his office hours are horrid. You will end up teaching yourself, but get with other students, utilize the solutions manual, and on campus resources. But besides that, going to lectures are pointless unless it's a quiz day or exam day. He posts his powerpoints, suggested problems, etc. online anyways.
its not that bad. do the practice problems and you will be fine. seriously. the z curve is kinda confusing but most of the times, a 68 percent and up on a test will curve up to an A or B.
Fink was an absolutely horrible professor. Going to class was a waste of time, but even reading the textbook and doing the suggested problems was not enough to do well in the class. You have to spend a lot of time outside of class teaching yourself the material because all he did in class was read off the slides and ignore questions.
reads off the slides, attendance is definitely not necessary. if you have never taken chem before I would recommend someone else. however, if you have prior knowledge on chemistry you will do just fine. I took ap chem in high school and I'm doing really well in his class even though he doesn't teach the material very well.
Professor Fink is a really nice guy but his class is so hard. He only reads from the slides In lectures and skips steps so its impossible to understand. I would recommend avoiding taking chem with him.
i mean the chem department doesn't have good professors but if you take fink the tests are pretty straightforward you just have to teach yourself allll the material outside of class.
All genchem teachers are not great but Fink is one of the worst. Had no idea what my actual grade was all semester since tests are curved at the very end and very strangely. The test questions are weighted SO weirdly and can be on the smallest details sometimes. I took AP Chem in high school which is the only reason I'm barely getting an okay grade
If you do the suggested problems for each chapter, you will be fine. The curves are big and the tests aren't THAT hard. He makes sure grades work out in the end.
Honestly, if you do the practice problems he assigns and the practice tests your TA gives you, you'll be fine. Quizzes are straight copied from practice problems he assigns. Tests are hard but there's a HUGE curve at the end of the semester. All the people that are bashing him are expecting to be spoon fed the answers. Do the work and you'll be ok
If you took AP Chem, you'll be fine but if not get ready to teach yourself from the textbook. I didn't take any notes from his lecture and only used the slideshow to check my notes from the textbook. There are three tests the whole semester and a curve at the end, but my grade is solely because I got a 5 on AP Chem
mumbles through lectures and the whole class is graded on 3 exams plus the final. graded inconsistently. not helpful in the slightest, completely inaccessible, impossible class. would rather free fall off tu crane than take again.
His lectures are not the most helpful, but he gives generous curves on the test and is willing to negotiate with points. Would not take if new to chem. A good, easy class for those who have taken AP Chem.
No idea how he is allowed to teach. Lectures/powerpoints straight from the textbook so you don't have to go to class unless you want to waste your time. Go to all the SI sessions. Test averages stay at 50% so there is a curve but you will not know your grade until the end of the semester. do yourself a favor and take a different prof for chem 1070
My high school didn't offer AP Chem, so this is my first real chemistry class. If you have not taken AP Chem, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I truly have no idea what I'm doing, but the SI sessions are very helpful. He tests on material he only mentions in passing, so I would read back through powerpoints before the test. If you take Fink, good luck!
I waited until the end of the semester to write this because I wanted to give Fink the opportunity to have at least 1 decent lecture. Surprise: he didn't. None of these reviews are exaggerations. You WILL be teaching yourself chemistry. If you feel comfortable with that, great. If not, find another professor.
If you have no chem background do not take him. The tests are insane because each question ranges from 5-15 points, so getting one wrong is detrimental. However, because the average is normally a 50, getting a 70 is like an A. The practice problems don't have answers, so I suggest getting a numerade account which has videos explaining them.
Dr. Fink is the absolute worst professor I have had at Tulane. He literally waits till the last second to tell students what's going to be on the exams, and he makes his final extremely long and doesn't give students enough time to take it. If you want a caring professor who will actually teach well, this professor is not for you.
He goes off on tangents during lectures, and half of the time you cant even hear him because he doesnt speak into his microphone. Test questions are difficult and final was terrible. He gave no partial credit for the final because it was online (covid). The curve is the only thing that didnt kill me. Got a 55 on the final and a 74 without curve.
This class was the worst class I have ever taken. His lectures are exactly what is in the textbook, they are boring, and you can't even hear him half the time plus he has an extremely monotone voice. Your grade is based entirely on grades and though he does curve, the tests are brutal. Avoid him at all costs if possible.
It really helps to have a chem background before going into this class, but I did not take AP Chem and still got an A. Save yourself the time and don't go to class. All I did was teach myself the practice problems the weekend before and had no issues. If you want an interactive professor don't take Fink, but if you're independent, definitely do.
Very inaccessible. Tests are curved, but don't rely on that. Avoid this professor.
I can confidently say I learned nothing in this class. The curve and prior chem knowledge are the only things that kept me from failing.
He is just not good at teaching simple as that. The main problem is he does not do any example problems in class on a whiteboard or something. He literally just reads the slides with a laser pointer. Your grade is 100% dependent on test no assignments or anything. The only reason to take him is if you know chem and just want to take a test.Notgood.
I MADE A 11 IN THE CLASS DONT TAKE
I am a pre-med student, pretty good at science, and had a decent understanding of chemistry before this class. These were the only reasons why I physically and mentally got through this class. Professor Fink didn't teach me a single thing the entire semester, and I found myself teaching absolutely everything to myself. Tests weren't bad, but he was
Your grade in the class is based on 4 tests. He curves well which helps. Lectures are hard to follow and dense. I basically had to teach myself chemistry. I went to another professor's SI sessions because he was not good.
If I had not taken AP Chem, I probably would have failed. Be ready to teach yourself since the way he explains things is so confusing. He gives practice problems but cannot solve them himself. Take anyone else.
In my opinion, Professor Fink gets a bad rap. Despite Professor Fink's straight-from-the-textbook lectures, his exams are relatively straightforward. The content is never surprising, and the curve is extremely generous (the average in the class is curved to B+). He doesn't assign homework, but he has recommended problems. Big recommend.
Professor Fink has simple exams and is a generous grader. In addition, he is very clear about what content will be on them. On top of that, he gives a very generous curve. I personally liked him quite a bit. While lectures are helpful, they are completely optional, and he gives you the choice to teach yourself from the textbook if you like.
Let's be honest, the whole chem department from Tulane is complete trash. But this man will make you hate chemistry. Don't bother to go to class, he posts the slides and you can become self-taught. The SI doesn't help either. The curve helps during tests but make sure you stay on the average or above it to pass his class. Also, no assignments.
Prof Fink was one of the WORST professors. He does not explain well so be prepared to basically teach yourself the entire time. He also said to study specific bits of material and then proceeded to not put it on the test more than once. There are no quizzes, homework, or attendance grades so if you don't do well on every exam you are screwed.
3 exams throughout the semester and the final are your ENTIRE grade. So if you do poorly you're pretty much screwed. He just reads off his slideshows and never shows how to do problems. You are better off not going to class. Generous curve. The average for every exam was an F.
Genuinely do not take him. Dont think you can just suffer through it its not worth it. The only reason I passed is because of the crazy curve - my 50 was a B. He doesnt curve til the end so you wont know if ur gonna pass. I have never hated a course more.
Honestly you don't even need to go to class. Lectures were not effective at all. The power points are all posted and the tests are solely based off of the power points. I recommend watching The Organic Chemistry Tutor on everything, that's what I did. If you are good at teaching yourself, you will be fine. If not, definitely do not recommend.
Fink rundown: -Lectures are monotone and don't help. Teach yourself and understand how to do the practice problems he assigns in order to do well on the exams -Three exams and one final are the only grades -Curves pretty heavily, but you won't know your grade until the end of the semester, only what your exam grades MIGHT be (no drops)
He was very hard to understand and inaccessible outside of class. The exams are easier in terms of the material, but you need to learn everything outside of class.
There are not many great options for CHEM1070 at Tulane. Unless you're very familiar/advanced with chemistry, I advise against this section. Few people attended the lectures, and I recommend overviewing the textbook and practice problems instead/in addition to. He's a great guy though! He's helpful and accessible despite the challenging class.
If you didn't take AP, good luck. I studied insane hours for this class because lectures are confusing. I attended every one hoping it would help (nope). SI sessions help a ton, GO TO THEM. First midterm low was a 7%, avg 53%. Tests are very hard and id say start studying early. Fink isn't helpful and is very monotone. I needed caffeine every class
Tests are most of the grade but he curves. Average for first test was 52, second test after the weed out was 50.9
Do not take. Class average is 50, with low scores being as bad as a 5. Only people who are successful are people who took AP Chem or have a good chemistry background. If you don't already understand Chem 1, you'll hate it. If you are already good at chem and just need credit, go for it because attendance isn't counted. If you want to learn… don't.
this class is awful. I have not learned one thing and all I do is study for it. try and take another teacher if you can.
This class is so difficult it genuinely does not matter if you study for the exams or not because no matter what preparation you do you will fail it.
This course gave no insight into general chemistry. The only time I gained any sort of knowledge was through the SI sessions hosted by a student. Professor Fink was unclear, unhelpful, and quite honestly didn't teach. He read off a PowerPoint every lecture in a monotone manner. ATTEND SI SESSIONS. THE AVERAGE SCORE WAS 50 ON ALL EXAMS.
Do not take fink.
By far the worst Gen Chem I professor her, literally do not take him if you can avoid it. There is literally no point in going to the lectures, you just have to read the textbook, watch videos on your own, go to the SI sessions and pray. Thankfully theres usually a 40 point curve on the tests because literally everyone gets like 20's and 30's.
Fink is difficult and he doesn't give a lot of other ways to get grades other than 3 midterms and a final. The class averages for the three midterms were 52, 51 and 59 (luckily there is a curve). The class periods are all lectures and he doesn't use the 6-8pm block for tests.
I feel like he gets a bad rep; he isn't that bad. I feel like you don't get enough support in this class, so if you're not naturally good or have taken Chemistry before, I would advise against this professor. But I don't think he's truly terrible. I didn't go to any of his lectures, I just self-studied, but I got good grades.
His lectures are very blunt and hard to understand. I still went to his lectures because it did help a little. Graded on 3 midterms and 1 final. The test are difficult but he does curve. He gives no clues on what will be on the test so you just need to study everything. He reminds me of a little teddy bear so I can never really hate on him idk.
worst professor you could take for gen chem I, AVOID HIM. I went to every single lecture, attended almost every SI session, had to basically self teach all the material, did the suggested problems and still was not enough. his lectures are useless, tests are hard and the class average on his midterms were 51 and 53. the final is 40% of your grade.
3 midterms and 1 cumulative final. He has grad students grade everything and they are harsh. Lectures are mundane and boring, and he rarely goes over practice problems that help. GO TO SI SESSIONS. He gives practice problems on canvas that help and there is also a curve, but other than that he is a professor to avoid.
genuinely the only learning I got from this class was from the SI sections and YouTube lectures. By far the worst prof I've had. Pulls out the most BS topics for the final instead of the core stuff you actually need to carry onto gen chem 2. SI said that a 60 average was a miracle, shows how well fink teaches.
Terrible experience, did not learn a single thing from Prof. Fink. Seemed like a cool enough dude but if you don't have it in you to teach yourself like me, I give you my best of luck.
If you can help it, do not take Fink. I definitely could have studied more and put in more effort, but the lectures aren't super helpful. If you have to take him watch the organic chemistry tutor he saved my grade.
If you want to learn all by yourself then take this. He does not teach so you have to learn everything by just doing practice. Heavy curve because everyone fails. DO NOT TAKE HIM. terrible.
Avoid taking this prof if you can.The tests are nothing like the practice tests. His lectures are not taught well and not worth going to, you will have to teach yourself everything anyways. What got me through was going to Si sessions and using Pearson+ to teach me everything. There is a huge curve on all exams but don't rely on that.
Genuinely please don't. He's the sweetest person ever, but his tests are ruthless and don't reflect his kind nature. The highest test average all year was probably a 55, and yes there's a curve but I'm telling you right now that's not going to save you. Don't take it unless you know chemistry better than the TA's.
