Terrible! Stay as far away as possible!

Seemed to be above most students, like he was better than you. Also he lets student's parents push him around; stronge in voice but quick to give a bad grade. Stay away from this guy!!!

Appears to be teaching just to assure himself that he still is more intelligent than his soon-to-be competitors in the work force. Incredibly hard grader, with students either getting 10, 1 or 0 points on a typical 10 point question. Avoid!
He tries to be better then everyone else, gives unfair grades and time limits to everything! Horrible teacher!
Dr. Fitch was more than happy to show the class that he indeed knew more about math than the students taking a 100 level math class. I don't feel that I learned much of anything in his class, except how to look stupid in front of a class room.
Grading can be tough. Explains material well, but a small error can cause a 0 on a homework assignment.
Arrogant.
Horrible Math professor!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM! My class went from about 50 students to maybe 10.
He really makes sure that you understand the basic principles and have a thorough understanding of what is going on. Of all my math professors I liked him best, but he really makes you work for your grade.
Not only does he expect every student to be genius level, but also expects every student to already KNOW what is to be covered in class. He will slap a problem on the board, complete it, then hand out assignments assuming you learned what was needed.

Really willing to give out-of-class help, cares about his job and the students.

I'm sorry, but shouting about math in the morning is not my idea of a good time. VERY tough grader, doesn't leave any room for slack. Could probly be becuz he's nervous that some us will shortly be working with him and also be older.
Not going to be able to slack through this one, kids. But if you actually pay attention and come prepared, he's an excellent teacher. Very approachable out of class, caught him a number of times helping folks out in the math computer lab or his office. Opinionated but not offensively so. Also, he's actually computer literate! Again: You won't slack through the class, but you CAN learn a lot.
Smart teacher, knows his stuff, very tuff class, expects you to be putting in the university required hours per week, if you want a more indepth understanding of mathematics take him, if your just looking to get by look elsewhere.
I thought he was one of the most arrogant men I had ever met. I hated being in his class, I ended up dropping it just because I hated his sarcastic and demeaning remarks to the students. I love calc, and I'm good at it. But I hated this class!
He actually guest lectured for my professor a couple time. He is arrogant and condesending. He shouts and is just generally an objectionable person to be around. He marks points off homework if he doesn't like the way you write your "plus" signs. HORRIBLE!!
He's loud, abnoxious, and has no business being a teacher with that attitude. I like math and I had to drop his class a week after it started because I couldn't stand him.
very bad teacher...he makes you do projects =/
Very difficult teacher, but he does his best to help if you don't understand. If you do make it through his class, you make it out with a GOOD understanding of the subject that will help in any future math you have to take.
I know people don't like him. But if you think you want real math take his class. Except his grading system I liked his class and lecture. He make you work hard and change your view of math. If you are willing to understand math I strongly recommend his class.
He'll make you work hard, and an A requires constantly being on top of your game, but if you've got the grit you'll know your stuff when he's done with you.
He was an unhelpful jerk and made me feel like there was somehting wrong with me for not understanding his explanations. I know he was a bad teacher because I didn't seem to have any problem passing calculus, whats more is I still remember it.
He doesn't use the book and isn't available for assistance. His projects are ridiculus, require too much time and give you little help with the tests and homework. He is arrogant and an overall bad teacher. **STAY AWAY**
He was not helpful at all and would not answer many questions that the class had. The tests contain harder material than he teaches in day to day classes.
He barely teaches the class, and instead has you supposedly teach yourself, which doesn't actually work because he usually doesn't summarize the correct results. Homework answers aren't graded so you don't know if you did it right. Projects are graded harshly and not as brilliantly constructed as he believes. Tests are laughably difficult.
I don't know why he is teaching, he has obvious contempt for most of his students and is very self-gratified.
I went into this class hating math, he didn't help at all. He just made me hate school more.
He is terrible! He doesnt help at all! "Its typical to fail his class"- yeh those are his words! STAY AWAT!
He is incredibly smart, but definitely comes off as a tool. You will learn a lot from him if you can weather out the constant beratements and condescensions, however your grade will in no way reflect how much you learned. Does have the philosophy to test "not on what I know you know, but on what I think you can know." Projects are included.
UNINSPIRING AND TALKED DOWN TO STUDENTS. I FELT AS THOUGH I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL(THAT WAS 20 YEARS AGO.) IT IS ALSO MY OPINION THAT HE GRADED TO HARSHLY. I DROPPED THE CLASS WITH A "B" WHICH WAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST GRADES IN THE CLASS. I WOULD NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM AGAIN; NOR WOULD I RECOMMEND HIM.
He is the most condescending person I've ever met. He teaches his student's like they are idiots. He does not grade your homework on accuracy rather completion so you don't know what you get wrong and so you get in wrong on the quizzes and tests as well. He puts you in groups to teach you so that he can once again cop out of doing his job.
The worst, Jerry, the worst. Seriously what can I say about this guy that hasn't already been said in past comments? There is a reason why his sections are always half full while the others are completely packed. If you do get stuck with him plan on spending most of your time just trying to figure out what he expects you to know.
THE WORST!! I have never had a teacher that has confused me more. Math is already hard, but with him answering our questions with questions and not fully explaining anythings makes even harder.
He's unwilling to answer valid questions about a problem, gets upset when you try to use the book to learn, and has been very condescending to students when they ask for help. When I took his class, most students were failing (not just not passing, but failing). If you don't understand this math well already, taking this class is not for you.
He doesn't teach much. He believes that if you can figure it out, then you will know it better. He says that if you use the textbook for anything other than the homework problems (i.e. learn), then you will not learn what you need to pass his class.
Professor Fitch was one of the worst professors I've ever had. After going to Every class, doing every assignment and every test i still had to get a 115% on the FINAL to pass the class. After all was said and done he told me I should have taken better notes in class. He was absolutely useless, and I warn every other student about him.
This professor should no longer be teaching. He wasted an entire month of my time before I dropped the course. He expected my classmates to teach me calculus. By the time we figured out that we did not have a clue it was a month into a difficult course. As a teacher he is worthless. He comes across as condescending and arrogant.
How this guy has remained on the teaching staff here at UAA is beyond me. I mean I know it's basically a glorified community college but this is absolutely ridiculous. When I pay good money to take classes I expect the instructors to at least be somewhat qualified to teach. UAA, wake up already and get rid of this guy.
Horrible. Don't take his class. He's arrogant and useless. He fails the students. A big waste of time and money, sadly. He's cocky, rude and condescending. Avoid him at all costs. You have been warned. D:
I have literally started and quit algebra 8 or more times in about 12 years. I hate math, and struggle to comprehend it. This is the first time I have been successful in a math class, and I am grateful to him for it. He teaches well, his methods are different, and he is hard, but it's worth it
I use to always get a's, math was my favorite clas, until this. He DOES NOT teach the class. DOES NOT answer questions. DOES talk down to students and treats them like idiots. DO NOT I repeat DO NOT take him!
lazy and rude, thinks he's to good to tech this cless
This professor is very rude, not helpfull at all. I learned absolutely nothing in this class. He showed no interest in teaching us, and treated all his students like imbeciles. He does not answer questions directly, he instead puts them in riddles that only he himself can understand. This is the worst class i have ever taken DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
He doesn't make his desires clear; his syllabus states "partial credit will be given for correct steps taken" but in actuality five correct steps and one wrong answer will yield you no credit. He tells you to purchase the book and then scolds those who try to learn from it. He is extremely arrogant and mocks those who don't agree his methods.
this teacher is practically a joke an expects the class to teach itself he dosent teach anything at all an he anwsers question with questions or he will say something smart an piss you off i definetly couldnt stand him or his so called "teaching" method
This is the worst teacher ever. He doesn't really teach you and tells you not to read your text book and only do the problems in it. He doesn't answer questions directly and makes them sound like he answered them but really doesn't.
Dr. Fitch is the most condescending, arrogant, egotistical man I have ever met. He was rude to me in class in front of everyone, could not WAIT to tell me I was wrong and why he was ALWAYS right, and he treats his students like they don't know anything. He even got mad at me for sneezing in the middle of his class! Don't take his class!!!
The worst 'teaching method' ever, if he even has any. He is certainly smart, but definitely has no skill to teach others. Teaching is simply not for him. If you don't already have a VERY high level of knowledge in math I would not recommend his classes. You will be lost!
Tolerating his condescending attitude and rude behavior is the hard part; the actual material is a breeze by comparison.
One of my favorite professors, all it took was the time on my part to 1) be prepared and 2) step into his office and actually ask an intelligent question that didn't revolve around getting the right answer. He is always a hard professor, but you will gain an excellent understanding of the topic if you apply yourself.
He tests on material that he does not teach. Pretty rude. Not very helpful during office hours. I got a C in MATH 105 and got an A next semester in MATH 107 the next semester. I don't recommend this professor.
This man does not teach well at all. He does not use the book except for homework problems, and when you try to refer to it for help, he tells you the book is wrong. He comes up with his own way to teach, which is extremely confusing. I do not recommend his class if math does not come easily to you!
Had to drop the class. His teaching method just doesn't stick
Terrible! He has the "I'm always right" attitude. Well yeah, you're the teacher, I hope you're right. Arrogant, unclear, and lazy with his teaching methods. Expects students to do majority of their learning on their own. And don't you dare ask him a question bc he won't answer you and will tell you to ask the rest of your group who is also clueless
Do NOT even attempt to ask him for help on your projects. He barely ever helps you and if he does he just glances over it then gives you a terrible grade. Make sure that you show up every day the students in your group will help you figure out things better than he does. Watch out, he loves to rub in that he's smarter than you are.
Didnt really teach me anything. Tests do not correspond with the homework. If you are trying to learn math i suggest you get a different teacher
This math class is basically just a study hall. In class we work on homework and learn nothing from the prof. The tests are completely inconsistent with the homework. Not to mention the prof has no interest in helping students learn. He is intelligent but an ineffective teacher, which is obvious by the fact that the majority of the class has an F.
He warns us that class will be difficult, tells us exactly what to expect in terms of class methods, and answers the question you ask, although he expects you to ask the right question. Not a skate class by any means, but a worthy professor.
Professor is extemely strict on his test and does his own math in aviation themed. Put a lot of time in this class and still failed his exams. I wouldn't recommend anyone this class if your not very good at grasping math like me.
A few things, Hes a genius inside his own head. He will NOT go out of his way to help you. The class was Aviation themed. I love Aviation but he certainly made me think otherwise. He has is own ways of math, everything I learned previously can be thrown out the window. NOT recommended!
Challenging, but straightforward in what he expects. Begins each class with a short quiz. Assigns "lecture questions" before class (DO THESE; they help on exams). Homework is textbook problems plus a summary of what you've learned that day. Fitch is very personable during office hours (a little scary in class at times) and an animated lecturer.
Great teacher who truly loves math. He is good at keeping the subject matter interesting. He doesn't hold your hand through the content and there is little busy work learn but if you are self motivated and show a interest in the content there is no reason you can't succeed with this professor.
An excellent teacher.
Makes a ridiculous amount of puns. Very focused and helpful, comes off a tad condenscending but that is the way he is, and it doesn't affect your learning unless your sensitive and take it personally, then don't take him.
Fitch is incredibly impersonal, and always makes students feel inadequate and unintelligent, regardless if that is true. Not terrible at teaching, but is very unlikely to help you if you ever have a problem, and seems to have no interest at all in the students. Would not recommend.
Does not teach. Puts lessons online to be learned before class and then places you in groups in class to do homework. Extremely condescending and very little help when you ask questions. Assigns projects throughout semester including 2 essays. Grades by looking for reasons to take off points. Everything i learned was from youtube. Avoid thisteacher
Uses a discovery method of learning via "pre-lecture" lessons. Gives daily quizzes that are representative of exam questions. Doesn't "give" exact procedures, but he is extremely helpful and patient during office hours. Kind of ridiculous in class (if you can keep up with his wit).
Incredible math teacher. He knows his stuff and expects you to as well. If you've worked hard in all of your past math classes and are willing to work with his sometimes condescending attitude, you'll do well. Go to his office hours often, he seems to be at his nicest there.
Fitch has a very different method than most, in which he doesnt lecture. Instead students form groups and present HW problems, and discuss them. Fitch then corrects as needed. For some this works really well, others have a hard time with it. You have to come to class prepared. The MWF class schedule is tough, more work than Calc 3 taught by others.
Dr. Fitch teaches by not teaching. You have to teach yourself and he does not use the book. I found the class overly confusing and he was never willing to explain. I would avoid the class if possible
I'm already not good at math and I took this class in hopes of actually learning and getting a clear discussion on the lessons. Boy was I wrong. He doesn't even teach. He expects you to know everything. Whenever I asked a question as to if I'm doing something right, his response is "idk are you?". Not a good course with him. Avoid if possible.
Extremely tough, but very rewarding. For me (and many others) there was a disconnect in communication. One could read a set of instructions thinking they know exactly what he wanted and how to do it only to get it completely wrong.
This professor is awful. I am surprised the university lets him teach in such an odd way. I would avoid this professor at all costs. Math should be enjoyable and rewarding- not a large group project where one is constantly unsure of what's being asked. If you do have this instructor, look at his syllabus and see what I mean....
Calc 3: He is a tough grader & WON'T explain something to you if you ask for help. Asks "Well what do you think?" No textbook-lesson plan on a PDF document that you follow each day. Quizzes every day when class starts. You also have to write essays off of calculations YOU do that will take you about 4 hrs each time- then you resubmit it 3-4 times
Qual. teacher
Way too hard on his students. EXTREMELY condescending and expects you to knowunderstand everything before he even teaches it. He treats you as if you are stupid if you ask questions. By FAR the worst teach that I have had to UAA.
Condescending
Don't be fooled by his bowtie. Horrible teacher. Fitch puts you in groups and makes you ask your group any questions you have instead of answering them himself. He doesn't teach. Notes are taken "at home" and you do homework in class. Quizzes every day at the start of class. Not a good class to take if you aren't already good at math.
Posts lectures online, has you work on homework in groups when you get to class. DOesn't teach. Condescending and unapproachable. If you ask for help he tells you to ask your classmates.
You can expect to work in groups for most of the semester and read your textbook at home and preform your homework in class. The trouble is when you ask Fitch for direction on how to find the solution to a problem it's never a direct answer.
Was not very helpful when I had questions. He grades pretty hard. Participation matters. He gives projects for you to do and they are sometimes unclear and confusing. Must do the projects otherwise you won't pass. He has office hours but when I would go in there to look at my tests, he would look at his computer. Just didn't connect well with him.
He is a no no for anyone who is weak in Math. Trust me. Most of my friends are struggling to pass the class. The textbook is useless as well. Don't bother buy it. Borrow it from friends. He only use the textbook for homework
Homework is done in class and the "lectures" are required to be watched online at home before you come to class.
Not a good teacher, doesn't help and doesn't teach as far as I am concerned he should resign immediately.
I won't lie- Dr. Fitch knows exactly how smart he is. Towards his students his brusque attitude can often be misinterpreted as him simply not caring about them, but that is not the case. Dr. Fitch cares deeply not only for his students but for the learning process. It's a shame to see so many students don't care about it like he does.
I should have checked RMP first. I struggled in this class. The somewhat backward learning threw me off but wasn't a huge deal. What made it incredibly difficult was how he taught the lectures with not much explanation or help. I understand that he wants his students to really understand the concepts but this method doesn't work for everyone.
Tends to test us on physics material. A lot of the stuff we go over is real life problems, but are very difficult and he doesn't explain them well. He has very poor communication and comes off very rude. He posts all lectures online, but fails to give out the help that is needed throughout the class. His tests are nothing like the work we practice.
I really liked Fitch, he was a tough teacher I'll admit but he was also happy to explain concepts to you. I would take him again just because he knows EXACTLY what he wants from you and will make it clear. He doesn't fill you up with irrelevant information, keeps it pretty simple.
Fitch is not nice. He is a brilliant man and knows it, and has the tendency to make people feel less about themselves. This is not a good quality for a teacher to have. He puts lessons online and expects you to understand them without inclass help. HW is done in class. This teaching strategy is nice, but when answering questions he can be very rude
He speaks english but I couldn't comprehend things he said. Wouldn't suggest him especially if you are not a math person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are better off taking this class online or with a different professor that gets not everyone is in LOVE with math .
Professor Fitch is in fact a very technical math teacher. His class was by no means easy. Everything introduced was new to me, but Fitch has good office hours and would answer questions, so long as you actually have "a question"! You will need to work a little more to earn this pass, or just be exceptionally good at learning new concepts.
Dr. Fitch is my favorite professor of all time. I had him for Calc2and Discrete Math. I've since taken a lot more courses and done a lot more things and I am currently the Data Analyst and Math Instructional Specialist for a public high school. I definitely put in the work in his class, and I walked away with a strong conceptual understanding.
Great teacher with a unique teaching style that some students love and others hate. If you're willing to do the homework and show up to class you should do fine. Use the office hours, that's where his teaching skills shine the best.
Trouble is he does absolutely no teaching in class that would benefit most of us. He relys on his videos outside of class. He refuses to even do a few problems before we do the homework so that we are staring the the problems like, what? He will do them the next day but if he would have given us the examples in class we would understand better.
He can appear condescending at first because he is extremely smart and he knows it. He grades extremely tough, but he gave us ample opportunities to work for those points. "Work" is the key word. If you don't work for it, you will fail or perform poorly. He makes himself available outside of class and that is where he shines as an instructor.
Learning was done is small study groups followed by class discussion rather than dull lectures working through a text book. This made for a more solid understanding of the concepts, however, it also made active participation essential! Plenty of opportunities to master the material and redeem your grade. Super helpful 1 on 1 during office hours
Dr. Fitch is super dry and I really appreciate that, as it really takes the edge off the class if you get his humor. He doesnt require a textbook for Art of Math and has tons of office hours every week. Dont get behind on the assignments or youll spend the whole semester playing catch up.
Professor Fitch is a wonderful professor. Math is the type of subject where you get what you give and he will give you as little or as much help as you need. Compared to many of my previous math professors he was great. He will walk you through what you do wrong and help you understand. Your lack of effort is not a teachers failure to teach.
worst math teacher I've ever met, treats students as if they are stupid and won't give help when needed. Ended up dropping his class due to his attitude and unwillingness to help students succeed. I witnessed him treating a pregnant student like garbage and couldn't stand the atmosphere
Fitch is strict. So strict that he wouldn't let me make up a quiz after a family death. In addition he is consistently condescending in class and grades inconsistently, sometimes denying students points on certain questions they got right because they got another wrong. Would never take a course with him again.
He's tough but he cares about your education. Forces you to think for yourself and actually comprehend concepts. He's always willing to give extra help outside of class and doesn't assign excessive homework.
fitch fully and truly is a bad professor. meeting with him durring office hours was like a whole new person, he was helpful and kind but durring class he was totally useless. hes clearly likes math but hates teaching, maybe he should just sitck to upper level courses because he clearly looked down on us low lvl students when we didnt understand.
There's just so much. He grades on style not math (I got points deducted because I wrote my work in 2 columns but he preferred 1 column. The online homework system said everything you did was wrong so no one knew if they were doing the problems right or not, he was no help with that either. Basically didn't help in or out of class. DON'T TAKE HIM!!
Prof Fitch is a pretty great teacher. Took him in fall 2020 and he does a good job at explaining all the different concepts of calc 1. I rarely had to use the textbook or online resources to understand the material. He uses zoom breakout rooms a lot.
He reads cryptic descriptions for 10 minutes then sends you to a breakout room with 1 or 2 other people for the rest of the hour. The tests are nothing like the homework or the rare examples in class. If you miss ANY part of the test question, it's marked as a ZERO. No partial credit. The WORST math class I've ever had. I'm a 3.5 GPA and got a D.
I thought his rating here was harsh, but it's honestly what he deserves. He takes points off for reasons unrelated to the material, and he does not answer questions (he basically tells you to reread the lesson). He also doesn't teach and everyone must learn in groups by reading the lessons together. If your group sucks, too bad. Wouldn't recommend.
I thought the previous reviews were just exaggerated, but they truly are not. He doesn't show ANY examples during lectures and when you ask a question he does not give you a direct answer. Exams are 80% of your grade and he takes full points off for the smallest things. I recommend taking calculus with another professor.
Lectures focuses more on concepts than computations. Majority of the legwork for formulas outside of class. Office hours don't reflect his availability. Tough on grades. Many interesting projects in his course which focus on analytical thinking. Would reccommend audit, you'll learn a lot. Not an "easy A," course. Felt like 3 courses in one.
This class was the hardest Ive ever taken. Dr. Fitch may be a decent teacher at higher levels but his brilliance is his undoing at the lower levels, the subject matter is incredibly difficult and dont expect him to do you any favors, youre better off taking 105 or 151, please trust me.
Dont bother. You teach yourself and your classmates how to do the homework in groups while he checks his emails. Every other exam is scheduled outside of class so if youve got work or another class before class, too bad, you dont get to take the exam which is 80% of your grade. Waste of time and money for a prof who doesnt teach.
I took Discrete Methods. Instead of lectures, he made us present our answers to his homemade "textbook" while he silently watched. His unhelpful feedback would come a week later; by that time we'd already moved on to a new subject. The instructions on the tests were confusing and the correct answer involved figuring out what he *meant* to ask.
I highly recommend taking Professor Fitch's course. The educational value you leave his class will make other math courses you take a cake walk. You'll learn a lot more conceptual information that makes calculations easier and more intuitive. Overall I really enjoyed his course and projects !!!
tough teacher. even though I'm in a lower class he is pretty theory heavy.. it was a shock when i had to do theory assignments the first week in, and i'm left pretty confused on what to do. it's normal to be assigned like eight things at once. pretty hard
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He does not care that he is drowning you in work and does not accommodate for any situation. I took an ONLINE course, yet he made you go to in person proctoring even though UAA has RPNow(online proctoring program that almost every other professor uses for their online courses). Save yourself from the bad grade.
Constantly would change the requirements and rules for assignments so you would never get the credit. I would put one thing, he would say what to change, I'd attempt the assignment again and he'd then tell me to put what I had down for the first attempt. Had a cool concept idea to replace tests but was way too strict on concept requirements.
My favorite professor at UAA, is very helpful and dedicated.
Can't speak for math, but for Instrument Ground School, Fitch was a dream instructor to have. There is an expectation that you will know the prior required knowledge and everything taught will be based on that. No BSing, worked to make sure you got the endorsement. Lots of practical lessons and tips from personal experience.
I have never used Rate My Professor before and now I regret it. When looking at rate my professor I don't usually take it seriously because some people might not try and then complain about the class. However, This class is one of the worst classes I have taken in my academic career. I wouldn't recommend this class at all.
Avoid this class if you can - the professor has a very rigid grading system and expects perfection. However, unstuckstudy helped me with study prep and made the material more manageable.
Ever wanted to learn backwards by doing questions first, getting them wrong, and then getting taught the material after? Mark Fitch is just your guy! If you want to be challenged mathematically, make sure to take Mark! And don't forget it's Dr. Fitch! He makes that VERY clear! Could not recommend better, he is an amazing teacher if you want to fail
Really, avoid this class. He takes what should be simple concepts and twists them around his teaching ideology to make it confusing and hard to follow. ANY other calc teacher would be better.
80% of the grade is from 6 exams that are so vaguely marked you don't know what to work on, and the problems are much harder than what's discussed in class. Speaking of class discussion, it's non existent; work in groups for an hour and get questions wrong for him to spend the last 15 mins just saying the correct answer.
Most of the time I went to office hours he just said he isn't able to answer questions at the moment and to come another day, defeating the point of office hours. Due dates are often wrong and doesn't give good feedback when grading.
There are 5 or 6 exams in this class that determine your grade, 2 of which are taken outside of class time. Additionally, when the exams are returned the feedback is confusing making review of said exam difficult. Finally all the class work is being put into groups and discussing the notes due prior to class. Then briefly saying what was correct.
This is the worst experience I've had in a math course yet, not because the subject was particularly difficult, but because most of the grade was based on five tests. On these tests, he provided unclear and minimal feedback, making it hard to know how to improve.
very passionate about math and a very nice person to talk to. went over the calculus concepts and applications well, but there was a large lack of focus on actual calculation. In order to succeed in this course you will need to do a lot of studying outside of class. He does an odd standards base system which makes passing the class difficult.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. To pass, you must teach yourself the material. Your entire grade depends on only 5 to 6 standards, which are graded with extreme nitpicking. Effort and attendance are irrelevant. The course is poorly structured, and the standards do not match the homework or practice. AVOID if you value your time, money, and GPA.
