He's funny, he let's you out early a lot, and he's really clear about what he expects out of you. Pretty easy, and not a lot of work.
What a nice and genuine professor. His teaching style is so direct and effective. One of the best classes I have had at Elon. Outside of class he is just as caring and sincere.

A moody professor. Depending on his mood is how the class will go. Watch out for that 30% discrestionary grade at the end of the semester, thats there incase he dosent like some one.
I felt as if he was preaching some things to us, and no offense, it wasn't a religion course. I don't think there was enough time given before speeches had to be given either. Watch out for his discretion grade. On a daily basis, his class is easy.
This guy knows what he is talking about!!!
He is such a nice teacher and his class is ver direct and to the point! I reccomend him for any class!
He is an awesome teacher! He is really helpful, really nice, and cares about his students. His class you not only learn something, but it is really fun. I definitely reccoment it to anyone!
I have taken all of his JCM classes offered. Speaking is hard, he is a tough grader, but the tests are SO easy. Interpersonal and Small Group are fantastic. His discretionary grade can be bad, but basiclly just show up and youve got it.
His teaching style is very clear and to the point. He uses powerpoints which is helpful. Drops the lowest grade of the few quizzes given. Grades speeches somewhat hard, but is not impossible to get a good grade on them if you practice.
I love professor Fox! He's very clear in his objectives, and his class is fun. His assignments are clear; although you do have to work for your grade, if you follow his guidelines, public speaking should be a breeze!
Great professor. Really cares about the students. Funny, makes class interesting.
if your not a hardcore christian then you shouldnt take his classes. very biased against individuals who dont agree with his religious beliefs. not a bad teacher though. my advice is just to stay away and take him only if you have to
very interesting class. he likes telling stories. easy tests and quizzes. they come right out of the notes. hard grader on speaches. make sure you have a good visual aide!!
Pretty easy class, tests right out of the notes. Biased when grading pursuasive speeches that cover a topic he doesn't have the same view about. BIG TIME Christian...why should I know that about a professor???
Prof. Fox is a great teacher, period. He may not be very easy, but you will learn a lot! It's also nice to have a teacher with a conservation bias for a change! I highly recommend his class if you want to become a better public speaker.
great guy. tests right out of lecture notes. very fair grader. very opinionated about religion so whatever you believe, be prepared to back it up. overall, awesome class.
Amazing professor. Very intelligent and good at what he does. He is a tough grader, but he will make you a better student in his class and others.
He's nice and everything, but expects a lot from his class. Speeches might be great, but your grade might suffer. Watch out for absences, and don't come to class wasted from the night before. Also, he likes to preach - ALOT.
great guy!!!! refreshing to have a Christian for a prof...love his class
He's waaaaay too opinionated. If you don't believe and think what he does, he'll hold it against you. Tough grader on speeches, too.
He's interesting, has good examples and stories. I actually learned something in his class! (he's hot too!) This was my first 8am class in 3 years and I didnt mind getting up for this class. Tough grader though- participation is key.
He is a decent teacher but there is a fine line bewteen your keeping your personal belif's seperate from teaching. He was way over the line, even quoting bible verses on the final exam day. Would not recomend if your not hardcore christain/closed minded.

Liberals BEWARE!!! He is very conservative, did not like my work based on content.
give the guy a break- he's got like 8 kids-not the easiest grader in the world but very cool and animated- loves to tell stories to get his points accrossed- he is a minister? i beleive so yes he does have some leanings toward the right but it's ok, you'll survive-
He is WAY too bigoted for my liking. If he has problems with different people, that's fine, but he needs to keep it to himself. He preaches about things that have nothing to do with a speech class.
He's a hard ass, but he will make you a much better public speaker.
he made interpersonal communications a really fun class by making sure we were all involved in discussion. definately a more girl-oriented class but he made it really interesting.
He's def. into in his religion..which is great and his class is really easy...multiple quizzes and the final exam was a joke!...He's amazing!!!
the tests were super easy, as well as the final. he's an excellent public speaker and very religious, so speak on a topic that you know he will agree with, or else you WILL get a bad grade. not personable and very hippocritical and opininated (which you wouldn't think because he's a minister).
I had this guy 10 years ago and reading these postings brings back the worst memories. Awful. You must lie to this man to get a good grade - what he wants: bible beating kiss ass.

I don't know what everyone was saying about him preaching his beliefs - he doesn't do that at all; he has a really interesting class, it's not hard, he's super nice, and a great public speaker. You'll get a good grade and be a better speaker after taking his class, just don't be absent more than once. i loved this class!
Fox is incredibly subjective to his personal beliefs. If you are considering doing anything that goes against a strict interpretation of the bible-DONT. He takes his personal opinions into account and will grade you very harshly if you disagree. Other than that a great guy that knows a lot about public speaking (he is a minister).
My whole class loved him! He was very nice and lead by example. He himself is a tremendously engaging teacher and is passionate about what is his teaching.
He's a funny guy and isn't boring. He's a bit of a tough grader on speeches, but I still did well in the course. The class zooms by because you're basically listening to speeches the whole time.
Do not take him. Honestly, it is not worth it. He humiliates his students and only likes speeches on things he believes in. I wish I had taken the 8 am with a different teacher instead of his class.
Should have got an A- but given a B+. Gave me a bad grade on a critique, aced my speeches. But got a B + due to a great critique which he disliked for some reason.
It's important to note that he is also a conservative preacher. He is extremely biased and often makes insensitive, off-handed comments preaching his own opinions (he once mentioned how abortion is infanticide.) That being said, if you can tolerate his opinions and avoid speaking on religion as a rule, you will greatly improve your speaking skills.
Professor Fox is a great guy who is willing to help out anyone who puts in the effort in and out of the classroom. Be sure to talk to him after class or send him an email if you need help. He is my favorite professor I have had so far at Elon and would strongly recommend him to anyone interested in learning how to become a better public speaker.
Even when u think ur speech is good, keep practicing! Fox will critique u on the tiniest things and he will take a ton of points off for it. He has a strong opinion on some ideas, so be careful when choosing topics for ur speeches. Also, if u got a grade u don't deserve, compare it with others and talk to him. He grades differently for everybody.
For a half-semester 100 level class, there was way too much work. You are forced to give a speech every class as compared with other classes that only require 3 speeches. My biggest issue was his demeanor. To say he is opinionated is an understatement, and he goes out of his way to patronize his students if he doesn't agree with them. Do not take!
Prof. Fox makes you speak everyday in class. He is a tough grader on your speeches. But for quizzes, he drollest the lowest grade and averages the other two. He goes over the answer on the quiz before you take it. I would recommend reading the book cause its helps & it snot hard. Make sure you try to improve your skills from the beginning of class.
i loved his class and improved a lot
He gave me a lot of good constructive feedback and I feel as if I improved as a speaker. BUT his lectures were boring and he openly hates all liberal topics, so don't give a liberal-stance persuasion speech.
Professor Fox definitely isn't an easy professor, but his public speaking class was one of the best classes I've taken. Just note that you'll speaking in front of the class everyday and that missing just one class sets you back a good bit. Overall, solid choice for public speaking.
I started off as a shaky public speaker, but quickly found myself becoming confident and improving. Speeches are given every class day, which sounds like a lot, but ultimately this helps you be a great public speaker. Lectures are entertaining and have comedy mixed in. He is a tough grader, but you'll thank him once you see how good you've become.
I liked having him as a professor, but he wasn't my favorite. The class was good though.
Never had a worse teacher in my life. Taking his class made me feel like college is not worth the money if I have to put up with people like him. Didn't learn much since he taught too fast, and discouraged me from raising my hand. He studied at a seminary but I could already tell before even looking him up. For your own sake, please don't take him.
Best Professor I've had at Elon. Challenges you and gives you great feedback. He really cares about his students and teaches you so much about the material and life!
Dr. Fox is a really great professor. He has helped me both improve greatly and gain confidence in my public speaking skills. Giving a speech every day may sound scary, but the practice is really the only way to get better. I learned a lot from this class, and Dr. Fox gave great critical feedback. Would highly recommend this class!
I have loved being in Dr. Fox class. While having a speech everyday can be challenging, I can definitely say I have improved from being in his class. He also does a great job of making the classroom environment very comfortable to be in. If you want to be prepared for the real world, I recommend Mr. Fox. Have really grown to love his class!
Take Mark Fox for your public speaking class. While writing a different speech for each class period is a lot of work, it truly does prepare you for the real world. I came into the class as a terrible public speaker. While I don't consider myself to be great now, I know that I have significantly improved since taking this class.
I thought Professor Fox truly taught you how to be a good public speaker, you did a speech every class and had very good hands on experience on how to be an effective public speaker. Would 1000000% take this class again.
While Professor Fox's class may seem daunting- having to give speeches every day can be a challenge- but it's definitely to your benefit. I came in as someone who was dreadful at public speaking, and I have made a ton of improvement because of this class. Ultimately, this class helps prepare you for the real world, and it is so worth it to take.
Fox was a super nice guy but his class so super SUPER hard. The workload was SO much and not necessary for a 2 hour credit class. While it was hard, it was still fine and I ended up making a B-. If you are up for the challenge, take this class and you will like it. If not, literally do not take this class.
If you want to improve your speaking then definitely take him. It may be daunting to speak every class but they're only one minute long and usually about fairly simple topics. Putting in the work will get you a decent grade, and its super obvious that he cares about the subject.
Fox is an incredible professor who is very passionate about what he teaches. Coming from someone with a fear of public speaking, this class really helped me. It may seem like a really daunting class at first, but if you want to improve you public speaking skills take this class with Fox. You wont regret it in the end.
He was very critical of every mistake, so you felt a ton of stress/anxiety while speaking. Very critical of chosen topics for speeches, which didnt make sense until the last day when he told us he was a pastor. This alone made him seem pretty closed minded and made sense with his critiques during the class.
This was the first professor I have genuinely disliked. He lets his political views influence his grading and lectures too frequently. All in all, I would just recommend finding ANYONE else
Tough grader and very critical (usually in front of the whole class) but a very good professor because he genuinely makes people better speakers. I didn't experience lower grades from liberal speech topics but, he often comes off as close-minded. Attendance is very mandatory. 3 speeches (but you speak in class every day), 2 papers, 3 quizzes.
Fox has very unrealistic standards for his students, making it impossible to do well in his class. I had handed in ONE assignment ONE DAY late because of mental health issues and my grade could've been a B+ but it was a C. he is way too tough with grading and expects way too much. if your political ideals are different than his, you won't do well.
Professor Fox is one of the best Professors at Elon University. In his course, you will learn life long public speaking skills that will truly set you apart from other candidates in future internships and jobs in the real world. He is always available to help his students succeed and truly wants the best for them both in and out of the classroom.
I just finished class with him and it was a really good experience. Some people found the quizzes harder, however there's only a page of notes for each and if you study, you're guaranteed a 100. It is obvious he wants students to succeed and cares about growth in public speaking. I hated PS, but this class helped me so much. He is also very funny!!
Would not recommend taking his class. He humiliated me personally and is so critical to the point where you become anxious/stressed out. If he likes the topic of your speech, you will do well. He hardly gives out directions on what your speech should be about so you scramble last minute to find something to talk about.
Don't recommend. He was overly critical and will not make you a better public speaker. There are better options out there.
Do not take him. He will critique every detail about the way you speak and it will just make you self-conscious and a worse public speaker. Extremely negative and I had not once heard him once say anything encouraging to a student.
Some of the work he gives is SO unnecessary. Having multiple large assignments due on some days, it took away from the quality of my work and time I could've spent practicing my speeches. He is a really nice guy but way too critical on students who are just learning to public speak. He expects perfection and barely acknowledges improvement
Don't believe the high ratings. He will make you hate public speaking. Im not saying that because public speaking is sometimes hard, bc it is. I'm saying that because he's very negative toward his students and does not acknowledge improvement. He constantly embarrasses students by going on and on about all the flaws in their speech. He expects perf
Although he's a fun, entertaining, & informative professor, I will say he is not shy to humiliate you or others who grade your performance. It's been 5 years since I've taken this class & I'm writing this because this is where my insecurities began and I feel, in this way, Elon has failed me in my career.
He's a good teacher and you learn a lot, but dang is he rude! Will rip you a new one in front of the entire class. huge god complex and is on a big power trip. also won't let you use a laptop to take notes which is a bummer bc he'll yell at you if he even sees technology out
After reading many of these reviews, I am unsure why he is rated so low. He is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had here at Elon and to be honest the Public Speaking class is not that bad in my opinion, and that's coming from someone who has never liked to speak publicly. He made it interesting and he is a hilarious dude.
Fox is a very critical professor who expects a lot out of his students. He will often call you out on your mistakes when doing your speeches in front of the whole class and can be harsh. However, he does know what he's talking about so you will become a better public speaker by taking this class.
This guy is ridiculous. He asked a student in the middle of his class if he had taken his medication. He had no boundaries, is incredibly rude and needs to understand this isn't the 80's anymore. Loves to humiliate students for making mistake in front of the entire class. He also loves to slam computer screens so beware. STAY AWAY!
I was worried going into this class because everyone said how difficult and ruthless of a guy he was, but I found him to be nothing shy of super friendly and caring. The class itself is stressful just because of the nerves of presenting, but he was understanding and wanted you to do well and gave good feedback.
The class itself is very straight forward. Write a speech, give a speech, get feedback, do it all over again. It's not incredibly work heavy as you're only focused on one major speech at a time. He does say some out of pocket things every once in a while but nothing major. There are better options for PS but if he's your only choice you'll be ok.
He is a great professor and good at teaching public speaking. He is very vocal about his political and religious views which we didn't appreciate. Just because of his constant comments about his personal views, I wouldn't take him again.
Don't believe the bad reviews. His class is basically what you could call exposure therapy, you give a speech almost daily, but since it's a t/thr class, you have enough time to prepare. He also is not rude at all when it comes to feedback, quite the opposite, his feedback is very constructive, and he always have something good to say about you.
This is the guy that you want for Public Speaking. Ignore all of the bad reviews. Professor Fox breaks down any barriers between you and your classmates starting on the first day. I am a very nervous speaker, but Professor Fox made me feel so safe in the environment and he is so sweet. He is so funny and such a good speaker. His stories are amazing
I tried to like him but I cant. I like public speaking but he takes all the fun out of it. Every assignment feels like a chore and u dont have much freedom to give speeches on good topics. U write ur own speeches and he tells u not to memorize it but also to not read from notes which throws everyone off. He's also a ruthless grader. Avoid if u can
I was very nervous to take Public Speaking, but Prof. Fox truly helped me. His syllabus is very clear and outlines the whole class as well as the expectation for each assignment. Try not to miss class, you speak pretty much every class to prepare yourself for the longer/more weighted speeches. Lots of work, put in good effort and you'll do well.
Ignore the bad reviews. Mark Fox is a great public speaking professor who clearly enjoys his job and knows that the only way you can learn is to put in honest work and get honest feedback. If you get offended easily and don't want to be called out, consider doing the simple tasks he asks of you and paying attention.
I had Professor Fox for a short amount of time due to a family emergency so I had to drop from missing too many classes. He handled this situation horribly, he knew the extent of my situation and said I was expected to be in class. He also would make inappropriate jokes about women and how they are less competent.
Expect to give a speech every class. He's a pretty hard grader imo. Not very helpful when it comes to improving your speeches.
The class wasn't terribly difficult, but in comparison to other public speaking classes, it was much harder. He gives very vague feedback and often gives rude comments in front of the entire class. He is not afraid to call you out. Also, it doesn't put grades into Moodle, so you have no way of tracking your grade until it's final.
He will hold you accountable for your assignments and doesn't take any bs, but he was funny, genuine, and I looked forward to class every day. attendance and deadlines were strict, but he was understanding of situations. LOVED HIM SO MUCH don't listen to bad reviews, some people just can't take a little joking around. I was constantly laughing
I never thought a two credit class would have so much work. I had practice for about a 2-3 hours per class as we were speaking every class. The professor will not give out an easy 100 even on the most routine things. Despite all of the work I put in I didn't became a better public speaker as I tended to get more nervous as the semester went on.
IGNORE ALL THE BAD REVIEWS! Prof Fox is an incredible teacher who seriously cares about his students. He isn't afraid to call it like he sees it, and for those who can't handle a little criticism or joking around, grow up. He offers clear grading criteria and feedback, and will help you succeed!
He's incredibly knowledgeable and isn't afraid to give direct, harsh feedback if needed. You do have to speak in class everyday but it gets easier as the semester goes on. If you choose a topic he really likes chances are you'll get better grades.
