VERY willing to help students. Explains what he is looking for on exams and Problem Sets.
Very, very helpful, will go out of his way to do anything he can, overall, just a great guy.
Fantastic chemistry professor. Always willing to help students, good sense of humor, and makes sure you know EXACTLY what is expected.
He is the best teacher. Very straight forward!
He was good but his tests did not always comply with with what was on review. Just be prepared to study a lot.
Awesome chemistry teacher; explains things very well; gives lots of practice problems and always lets you know what to expect on exams
Great teacher- highly recommend! He tries to be funny sometimes, but come on they are usually chemistry jokes which makes him even funnier.
He clearly explains everything. He is willing to answer any question. He is a great person and keeps chemistry as fun as possible.
The most organized teacher I've ever come across, almost to the point of having OCD. He explains everything extremely well and is always willing to help during office hours. Great guy!
Freitag is simply one of the best profs I have ever had!! He is enthusiastic, funny, and incredibly smart. He defines what the class is going to be like and follows through with the initial outline of the class. He even provides a great website too!!
Sincerely tries to help his students. He's fairly new so still trying to figure out what works (graphs test results in every possible way to find out what went wrong).
Tests are hard. Does not scale. Explains things pretty well for the most part...and is more than happy to answer any questions.
Great man. I have him for Chem 205 also. Always willing to help out. Gives problem sets each testing term to help us understand the material, and offers extra study assignments that are not required. FULLY RECOMMEND!

i took freitag both semesters. he starts off all nice and seems like a very fair guy. his notes are very well organized and he is opened to suggestions. however, his tests are pretty hard and he is incredibly strict about his problem sets.i hate chemistry
Very good chemistry teacher. He is a really nice guy too. His tests can be challenging, but his lectures are clear and he provides plenty of resources online to practice on and study from.
He's really good at explaining everything, but the tests are really hard. The problem sets he gives out are really helpful for your grade.
Hard Teacher!! His lecture is good, but he's one of those teachers when it comes to the tests he asks anal and trick questions just to fail you!
Dr. Freitag doesn't get the credit he deserves. Sure, his tests are somewhat difficult, but he tells you exactly what you need to know. He does plenty of example problems and is an incredibly organized lecturer. I highly recommend him for Gen Chem.
Dr. Freitag explains at the beginning of the semester exactly what is expected of you. He explains every concept in class and has notes on the internet. I think he is very accomodating, and he is always working to make his class better! Take from him!
Harder and not as friendly as in 203. Really good lecturer, but examples in class are MUCH more straightforward than on tests where he throws curveballs to trip you up. If you want to learn, take him, but if your grade is important to you, don't.
Tries, but not a nice guy. Tries to trip you up on tests. Not a very good lecturer. If you're serious about chemistry, take someone else. If you care about your grade, take someone else. Actually, just take someone else.
AWSOME TEACHER! TAKE HIS CLASS.
Freitag is a genius. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with him, but if your good in chemistry you should really flurish with all the resources he makes available to you (online notes/test/practice problems). Also enjoys a good Simpsons quote now and then.
Freitag rocks!! He is the most helpful teacher I've met thus far at Creighton, and he genuinely wants his students to succeed. His tests aren't too bad and he's really good at giving partial credit. Also, his final is based directly off of your old tests, so if you study those, you'll be golden!
The best teacher I've ever had a Creighton. If you don't do well in his class its oly b/c you don't do the problems he gives you. He is willing to put 110% into helping you....you just have to ask.
Very approachable. Posts notes and previous tests online. Tests aren't easy, but he covers the material gone over in class. He also posts the answer key to the test right after the last class takes it. Doesn't take role. Class is RECOMMENDED! Freitag is a great guy.
He explains everything really well, and if you still don't understand, he goes out of his way to help you.
Dr. Freitag is an awesome professor. His class is very structured, which I liked. He always gives you his office hours in case you need help. He's also a genuinely nice guy also, likes to make some jokes.
Freitag is a good professor in my opinion. He is very helpful if you have any questions or concerns. His tests are not easy, but if you study hard you can get a good grade. He gives a lot of homework so you can help boast your grade that way, and if you are late with the homework he is very understanding. He is kind of hot in a geek sort of way.
He is an excellent chemistry professor. He is very helpful and understanding. He goes at a good pace and wants students to grap the concepts. The practice tests are helpful to study for the exams. He is super nice and approachable. I recommend him!
He is the smartest man alive
He's a great teacher and I would definetly recommend him. His tests aren't bad, and he lets you drop your lowest one.
Great teacher. He actually cares and wants you to do well. He puts everything in terms you can understand and works to make sure everybody understands. He will test your knowledge to make sure you can apply it, but study and you'll enjoy him.
This guy has great lectures, but this is a hard class! There are easier teachers out there. Tests are hard and questions are "twisted" from the norm. Homewor is a breeze though. 3 questions a week. lecures are super clear and he doesn't mind asking questions... Basically just don't take this class if you're bad at taking tests, otherwise go for it!
Great guy and good teacher, but the class is challenging. Loves to help if you want it. Study a lot for the tests and ask lots of questions to make sure you understand. He really wants his students to understand everything on a deeper level, giving everyone As not his main priority, though if you work hard its possible.
Dr. Freitag is a nice guy who is always willing to help. The homework is very simple, and can really raise your grade. His tests can be fairly difficult but if you study they aren't too bad. If you can take him on MWF, I would suggest it. His tests are a lot harder for the Tuesday-Thursday section because he has more time to go in depth.
i thought he was a REALLY good teacher. explains things really well. really helpful one on one. his test are a little difficult though, but still an EXCELLENT teacher
Very difficult teacher, extremely nice and will help you at all costs if you need it. Homework is in many cases unsolvable by chemistry majors who tutor. Tests are very hard. There are easier teachers to take.
Very, very helpful teacher, and a nice guy overall. His class is on the difficult side, but if you study and apply yourself, you will be fine. He tries his hardest to make sure the students get the most they can out of his class. A great guy to get help from and also has a great sense of humor. Recommended if you can take tests well.
He makes online outlines of the notes and its pretty much word for word what he says in class. 4 tests and a final each semester. He makes problem sets (30 pts each) for each chapter and also assigns recommended problems from the book, but you don't turn turn those in. The average was about a 40/60 on the tests, but I thought they were pretty easy.
Great personality, definitely knows his stuff, and does a good job of explaining stuff. Granted, you have to put in some effort, but you can learn a lot from this guy
This guy is ridiculous if you aren't ready for a 500-level class as a gen chem student. He writes all of his own tests that are ridiculous. His key idea is the "overall concept" that is so essential to his theoretical chemistry major. This was an extremely difficult class no matter how hard I studied. He isn't very clear answering questions.
He's a great teacher and really knows what he's talking about. Extremely smart guy. The only downside is the difficulty on the tests and problem sets. You really have to know the concepts involved to get them right. Not very many gimme questions.
Dr. Freitag is awesome! I came in dreading chemistry and after one semester of his class i ending up changing my major to it. If you are just looking for and easy A you can give up because there isn't one for this class but in Dr. Freitag's class, an A is achievable. Take him you will not regret it.
Dr. Freitag is the best professor ever. His lectures are awesome; very engaging and interesting. Even though he writes difficult tests, he is worth taking if you want to really learn and understand chemistry. He is also very helpful, available, and approachable outside of class. I'm taking him again next semester!
If you are an athlete you are screwed in this class, because he will not take you serious and will offer you minimal help even though at the beginning of the year he said that he will be helpful. I found out that when I asked him a question he would give me the next step, which that is not what I wanted I wanted to understand the problem. STUDY!!!
Really one of the best teachers that I've had at Creighton. Lectures are engaging, crystal-clear, and make the concepts very accessible. He's more than willing to help outside of class in whatever way he can, and his organization is superb (check out his website). His tests are hard, but not impossible. I'd take him again in a heartbeat!
I took him again after having him for CHM 203 and I do not regret it. Very helpful and tries to do his best to make sure that the students understand everything. He's always ready to help and has a deep enthusiasm for chemistry. Anybody dreading chemistry, take this man, he'll make it easy as long as you apply yourself.
Dr. Freitag was the best prof I had at CU in my first year. I took him both semesters for gen chemistry and wish I would get to take him in the future. His lectures are awesome & his examples are applicable & funny. Tests are hard, but he gives you the materials needed to succeed: LOTS of extra help, great notes. He loves chemistry and so will you!
Dr. Frietag makes a difficult subject very understandable and is willing to help students whenever they need help, whether in person or through email. His lectures are very structured and clear, and he assumes you come into his class with no prior knowledge. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and bends over backwards to accommodate them.
Does not do much teaching!
He is a good teacher and lectures are interesting. But he gives you problem sets that are not easy by any means and take 3 hours to do every week on top of doing problems in the book. He gives you lots of information but he does trick questions on the exam. He also makes you derive formulas in Gen Chem. Take someone else for a good grade.
Heres the deal with Freitag. GREAT teacher in class and outside of class. Explains everything soo clearly. But the reason he is so bad. TESTS SUCK (with a capitol S). My class avg test score 58 and 64. Tests were ridiculous and stupid. He wouldnt listen to you either if you thought u had the right answer. DONT TAKE HIM unless u are perfect at CHEM
Good teacher, very clear, writes good notes and makes himself very available for help. However, the tests are insanely hard and sometimes he makes simple concepts MUCH more complicated than they should be. Be ready to study day and night for this class and brush up on your calculus. I studied my brains out and was still just treading water...
Rough teacher. Tests were retarded hard, and even though i put 5+ hours in the library studying for this class daily, i still could only manage a C. Good luck to whoever attempts this.
Take his class if you have had AP Chem only. If you have had a bad chem teacher prior. This isn't the class for you. his test are hard. And he profiles his students. He basically doesn't make it possible for students to do well in his class. He trys to figure out who his A students are, his B and C students. He does alot of physics on the board too
Dr. Freitag is very smart and knows a lot about chemistry. Also, his notes on the board are easy to understand and legible. Having said that, he expects way more from his students than most of the other teachers. If you are really good at chemistry, I recommend him, but if you struggled in high school, then this class is NOT for you.
Best professor I've had. His lectures are clear&concise, and it is extremely easy to take great notes in his class due to how structured it is. However, his class is difficult. But it's not impossible to get an A. Ask questions in class, read the book, and go in during office hours; Freitag is always willing to help. (AP chem doesn't hurt, though.)
Apparently "Interest level prior to attending class" is the shown as "Rater Interest" on this site. At least I get to talk more, I suppose. Regarding office hours, go in at least once a week (I usually went in before the testing/quizzing block day). All the "over-achievers" will be there to ask their questions even if you don't have any. Listen.
Dr. Freitag is a very difficult teacher. Only take him if you really enjoy chemistry. He is a very good lecturer but his tests are near impossible to get A's on unless you have had extensive AP Chem experience.
Crystal clear lectures but extremely difficult tests. Office hours are your friend - I went in 4x week. Take if you have time and patience for an immense workload but know that you are getting an excellent foundation for later chem classes. Highly recommend if you're premed/prepharm
Oftentimes, he teaches you physics. If you took AP Chem., you will do ok.If you don't have a GREAT chem background, then you will struggle. His test, are REALLY difficult. Even if you took AP, you will have to study for his exams. Unless you want to spend 20 hours of chem. a week, or LOVE chem, I don't recommend taking his class:/ He is nice though
Dr. Freitag is an awesome guy and clear in lecture, but his tests are EXTREMELY hard. This is your warning now, unless you are a total stud at Chem, you will have a tough time getting an A, which is a 93 for him. I will probably get a B+. I decided that I wanted to challenge myself so I took him but in hindsight, I just wish I took some one easier.
Great teacher. Some of the harder tests I've ever taken. If you're prepared to work like a maniac, take him. If you want the easy way out, stay away.
Warning now: DON'T TAKE HIM. He's a great guy and his lectures are clear but his tests are impossible. You only have 2 grades (tests and problem sets). Even going into office hours and tutoring didn't help me. Unless your amazing at chemistry, sign up for someone else.
The comment instructions say "please keep comments clean" rendering me unable to tell you how difficult his class is, and how much i genuinely despise him as a person.
The tests are extremely hard, he goes into unnecessary detail. My class averaged 62% on the tests. He can be rather unhelpful. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WISH TO BE A CHEM MAJOR OR ARE PRE-MED. His class will ruin your life.
He is an extremely good teacher and very nice; however, his tests and problem sets are EXTREMELY difficult. Having an AP Chemistry background has helped, but his tests are essentially impossible. Great guy and really wants to help you, but not an easy A by any standards. Be prepared to put in a lot of time and effort.
He's awful, the worst teacher I've ever had. My class averaged between 60 and 65% on the tests. If you want a class where you have any chance of getting a passing grade I'd say look elsewhere.
Okay, so I'll be honest. I have a strong dislike for this man. He is not helpful at all. His tests require so much detail and his problem sets can barely be done by tutors. He wants to put people up to a challenge. There is ALWAYS a line for his office hours-which aren't convenient- and when you get there it's pointless. Good luck if you get him.
His lectures are very good but the tests and problem sets are really hard. He is very specific as to how you present your answer. Overall, I learned a lot but if I could do it again, I would choose a different professor.
Dr. Freitag is challenging professor. While his tests are challenging, an A is not impossible. He will help you out if you visit him during his office hours and his lectures are very detailed, yet easy to understand. Basically, if you are willing to work hard or love chemistry, take him. Otherwise, find another professor.
Hands down the hardest teacher I have ever taken. The average grade on tests (for the entire class!!!) was failing. Office hours are a LONG line and not terribly helpful when you finally get in. An amazing lecturer, but it does no good when his tests and problem sets are incredibly hard and take hours and hours to complete. AVOID IF POSSIBLE.
Dr. Freitag is an amazing lecturer, clear in everything he talks about. His notes written for each class are exceptional and should be used for any other general chemistry class. His exams, unfortunately, are relentless. Normal statistics prove roughly half of the class drops around mid semester. Of the remaining 50%, roughly one third will fail.
THE HARDEST TEACHER YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE. Avoid him at all costs
I love chemistry. Dr. Freitag is an amazing lecturer. He even puts his notes online. His tests are the hardest I have even taken! He is very helpful when you go into office hours but problem sets and test are almost very challenging. If you want a real challenge take Dr. Freitag. You'll get one. I would advise another professor though.
If you don't want to do work or be challenged, then don't take Dr. Freitag's class. But if you actually want to learn and understand chemistry, then take his class. His tests and problem sets are difficult, but if you go to his office hours, he's more than willing to help.
I LOVE this guy!! He was so clear and helpful, his tests are verbatim from previous years. I don't know what these other guys are talking about.
Im gonna be honest, I did very well in Chem in high school, but this class is so ridiculously hard. I listened in the lectures, did the homework and the problem tests, but the tests were EXTREMELY hard. Do not take this class. Such a great guy, but his class is so hard. Im not exaggerating. Extremely hard
Because Dr. Freitag usually teaches upper level chemistry, he is just too smart to teach Gen Chem I well. He gives great lectures and he explains most things very well, but his expectations are too high for the tests which are SUPER HARD. The class averages the first two tests were 64 and 66%. Don't take him for CHM 201!
Astonishingly smart. Extremely nice and helpful. Some hard material, but i really appreciate Dr. Freitag.
Really detailed in lecture and posts very good notes online. Definitely do the book problems and go into office hours if you have questions on them because he pulls questions from the homework problems and tweaks them for the test, and the tests are incredibly hard. Don't take him if you don't have a strong chem background.
Very very helpful and encouraging of office hours and questions. Very difficult tests! Only take if you are already pretty good at chemistry. Definitely not an easy A class, maybe B if you're good at chem. Really nice and willing to work with you and figure out how to help you succeed, but very difficult class. He is too smart to teach gen chem.
Dr. Freitag is smart as a whip, a considerate grader, and willing to go above and beyond to help you learn chemistry. I took this class during the summer, so long lines for office hours were nonexistent. If you make a math mistake he gave great partial credit. Show up, pay attention, ask questions, do the work, easy A.
He is an extremely smart professor that knows what he's talking about. His lectures are easy to follow and clear. However, the exams are extremely hard. His grading is based on exams, a final, a few quizzes and problem sets. He encourages office hours and is willing to help you.
He is just way too smart to teach General Chemistry. Whenever I had questions he never really helped but just restated my question or would explain something in the same way even though I came because I didn't understand how he explained something. I would definitely avoid him if you don't want to be a Chem major.
Dr. Freitag is perhaps the most thorough teacher I have ever had. His notes are extremely helpful in understanding the material, but his tests are extremely hard and you really need to memorize everything he has ever taught. Luckily (for PCHEM), there is no final, but boy his tests and problem sets are impossible. Study every night to get an A
Dr. Freitag is one of the best chemistry teachers I've ever had. I took AP Chem in high school so I had a solid background, but his content was still semi-challenging. However, it's easy to get an A as long as you show up to class and do the work. He gives super thorough notes after each lecture that help a ton. Be ready for hard tests.
Dr. Freitag makes you work and utilize office hours. He is an absolutely amazing lecturer and posts crazy good notes in blueline (he also has his own website). He writes extremely hard exams though. If you are interested in chemistry and are willing to work hard, he will help you be successful. Not an easy A or B at all.
I took Dr. Freitag during the summer for Gen Chem 1. He was a very thorough teacher and really cares about his students. He's willing to help you if you're willing to come to him with questions. He's also extremely smart and can teach at a very fast pace, so his courses are best if you have a solid background in chemistry first. Awesome professor!
Dr. Freitag is a great professor. He's super smart and explains things very thorough. He wants you to make use of his office hours, so definitely do that it will help a lot. However, you will have to work for your grade. Tests are pretty hard, but definitely doable to get an A if you read the chapter and do the practice problems.
Freitag is awesome. Definitely one of the harder Gen Chem profs, but you'll learn a lot from him. Do the book problems and know the material and you'll be fine. An A is do-able if you put the effort it. Definitely would take him again.
By far the most organized Chemistry teacher at Creighton. He puts his notes on the board in Roman numerals and it makes it very easy to follow. He's an excellent teacher. He grades his tests difficultly but if you do the homework and go to lecture you'll do well on the tests.
Dr. Freitag is probably the most organized human I have ever met. He writes his class notes with the program latec. He is very structured and very rigorous. He's an engaging lecturer and he makes you think about what you are learning. His problem sets and tests are difficult but he is willing to help if you ask.
Chemistry can be a tough course. Freitag does not many it easier but he doesn't make it harder. His lectures are basically someone reading the book to you and writing it on a chalk board.
This is one of my favorite teachers I have ever had. His tests are difficult but if you study they shouldn't be to bad. He is very well organized and cares about his students learning. Do the homework and youll be fine.
He is a good prof, but he is so smart that it is hard for him to dumb things down to explain them. He has LOTS of office hours and is always willing to help, it's just his explanations just don't always help. Very nice guy and grades pretty consistently, tests are very hard though, and there is usually a quiz once a week.
Professor Freitag was very challenging. Due to him being very smart and also the professor of advanced General Chemistry, I highly suggest not taking his class if you are not strong in chemistry or consider yourself a beginner. His homework problems do help, however, the test alone is very challenging. Compared to the other professors, he is hard
A very nice man who is incredibly smart. WHich was the problem, he was too smart to be teaching Gen Chem I.
Dr. Freitag is GREAT! He is so organized and has a backup plan for everything. He's probably one of the harder professors for CHM 203 but that's only because he's a genius. Your grade is based on your exams and there's no extra credit but if you pay attention in lectures you'll do fine on the exams. Also, expect a quiz at least once a week.
Has very strict grading criteria, and grades students with more of an opinion based rubric than an actual concise rubric. Gives grades based on how distinct your answers are from other students, so you must have an exceptionally different paper with a new technique of solving to get full points. Terrible teacher.
Professor Freitag has the most abstract grading rubric. He has categories dedicated to distinctiveness, neatness, and other random things that have no relation chemistry. His "take-home exams" are 6 parts long and are over questions that aren't covered in the book or in lecture. He essentially makes up elements and variables. I would not recommend.
You have to have a ready strong chemistry background for his class. His rubric is ridiculous; he graded your homework by the uniqueness and distinctiveness compared to other students. His class is NOT an easy A or B class. DO NOT take his class if you dont want to die in Gen Chem1.
Do not take his class. He is not understanding at all and is kind of rude. I tried to go talk to him and he just left the room. I wish I never took this class.
This class was demoralizing. The grade does not reflect learning or effort and often has nothing to do with correctness. Grading is subjective and unclear. It became more about figuring how to make the assignment look 'distinctive' rather than actually understanding and retaining any material. I would not recommend this class.
I gave him a 5 for difficulty not because the material was hard but because his grading criteria was a joke. You would get 1-3pts off of 10pt homework because "it wasn't pretty enough" even when the problem was 100% correct. He grades on aesthetics, not material comprehension. If you confront him about it, he becomes condescending. horrible prof.
Freitag is actually an amazing lecturer and does a great job of simplifying complex topics. HOWEVER, his grading criteria is complete bs. He grades on conciseness, elegance, appearance, and a bunch of other criteria that have no relation to chemistry whatsoever. He claimed 20% of our class having an A/A- was better than usual. A near impossible A.
Dr. Freitag is a great professor. His notes in class are very organized and he posts detailed versions of the notes online as well. His problem sets and tests are definitely difficult, but if you do the homework and take advantage of his office hours (20+ / week) to get help you can succeed and be well prepared for future chem courses.
Dr. Freitag is a genius but way too smart to be teaching Gen Chem to freshman. His lectures are composed of him explaining chem concepts w/ advanced physics and math that's not necessary. He is a very nice man and does his best to help his students in office hours. Only take this course if you aced AP Chem (4or5 on the AP exam or A in the class).
Prof. Freitag is genuinely too smart to teach a GenChem class. He clearly understands the material, but understands it to a point where he cannot simplify it down to the GenChem level. He's super accessible but not very helpful during office hours. No curves, no extra credit, no grade boosters at all and super hard tests.
Dr. Freitag is a hard teacher, and there's no putting it lightly. However, he does his best to help students get a good grade and do well in this class. His tests are fairly difficult, but he provides you with plenty of review material for you to use before the exam. He also gives plenty of partial points so careless mistakes aren't as dreaded.
Honestly does not provide any resources for preparation for tests. He insists on joining his office hours but seems annoyed and excited for you to leave when you arrive. Grades extremely harshly and his lectures only make sense if you understand the topics already. A joke of a professor.
He makes you study and work hard to get a good grade in the class. He does tell people to drop the class if they aren't doing so well, which isn't constructive, but the way I see it if you let that affect your motivation to do well in the class then it's on you. I have an A- rn and I bombed the first 2 exams. Don't stop just cuz he tells you to.
Dr. Freitag is organized and had great lectures. He assigned optional book problems that were helpful in learning the material, and dropped the lowest exam and 3 lowest quizzes in our final grade. Had office hours every day and quickly responded to emails. He provided study outlines for each exam and quizzes were very similar to homework problems.
Dr Freitag is a horrible teacher for Gen Chem 1. A significant portion of our class withdrew from the course because they were doing so poorly. He is too smart for his own good and has no business teaching Gen Chem.
He is very smart and knowledgable about Chemistry, but he isn't very approachable. He cares about his average on the tests and if it gets too high he makes the tests harder. I won't recommend this professor
He is an okay teacher, super organized. He is so smart though, that he just doesn't understand some questions. He has random quizzes so if you don't show up, you may miss a quiz. His tests are hard, more about application than if you know exactly what to do, but he does give out points for trying. Lectures are boring, easy to fall asleep.
I took this class in a Covid semester so classes were short and were only used for questions. His lectures were not videos, they were insanely long PDFs. He gave us take-home exams but his grading scale was so weird. He grades chemistry subjectively. If it "stands out" you'll get an A. One test no one in our class got higher than a 76 and no curve
Avoid at all costs for gen chem. His tests are subjective homework and you will have homework due three times a night. I took back in 2020, may have changed but his format is unclear and will not prepare you for gen chem 2.
Dr. Frietag was one of the best professors I have had. Having him for CHM 203 was definitely a trial by fire. He is super organized and has office hours every day. He also responds to emails very quickly. I asked him to write a rec letter for me and he got that done in about two days. I worked very for every point, but it was worth it
I struggled really hard but when second semester rolled around I was way more prepared for gen chem 2 than most of the other students who hadn't taken him (I took a different professor semester 2). He was very patient and always happy to start from the very beginning if you came to him during office hours. Class is easiest when you do the homework.
Dr. Freitag was a great Chem professor. I enjoyed his lectures as he used chalkboard which allowed everyone to keep up with him. He has a lot of time slots for office hours and is very helpful if you need help on any of the practice problems. There were daily quizzes but as long as you do the problems he assigns the quizzes are fine.
Not flexible. You miss a quiz sorry, zero. No lecture videos so if you missed class you're done. He doesn't help his students pass this class. Chem lovers you'll be fine but if not good luck. Daily homework and quizzes.Tests that make your friends in other sections lost.
Test are brutal literally hurt me mentally and emotionally. When people in parsons, who I recommend, looked at my test when we got them back they would say they didn't learn half of that and be genuinely confused. I had to retake this class and most people in Freitag's class do. Get ready to either not sleep ever, fail, or have to withdraw. Rude.
Dr. Freitag was definitely a difficult professor, but it's clear that he knows his stuff. He's nice, but often struggled to explain concepts in a simpler manner, so I would come out of office hours more confused. Make sure to do the textbook problems for homework because you get quizzed on them each week. He's not too bad, just get ready to study.
Only take CHM 285 if you're good at chemistry and enjoy gen chem. Freitag is amazing. He makes his notes publishing-level quality, he lectures brilliantly, and he has a ton of office hours for you to go to. You have to be willing to make this class a top or primary priority. If chemistry is easy to you, this class will be hard. No easy A or A-.
BE AWARE! The material is not THAT bad, the teacher is subjective though. You are asked to do a problem set write up about every week (I averaged 14 pages per set), which is a nightmare for the students who have a heavy credit load. The tests are not anything similar to the practice problems. Make a good impression early, your grade depends on it.
Mark Freitag is NOT teaching general chemistry and helping students build fundamental concepts. Every day is an ostentatious display of how intelligent he wants you to think he is. Recommend taking this course with another professor or at another university, especially if you are pre-med.
Very smart teacher. Maybe too smart to be teaching a gen chem class. Definitely do the optional homework it's your only chance to get a good grade. MUST see him in office hours
If you have some background knowledge of the material, you will do alright. He has office hours every day and responds to emails quickly. Do not miss class, as there is a quiz at the end of each one for the first half of the semester. He has frequent exams, and the exams and quizzes are the only things that make up your grade.
His lectures were easy to follow along with and he explained the topics very well. He was very caring and willing to answer any questions, and his office hours were very helpful. There are quizzes over homework and the tests are difficult, but he does give a review guide.
Okay professor. He was a very tough grader. Homework was out of the book, but not mandatory. To get an A, you need to understand everything very thoroughly. Was a difficult jump from high school AP chemistry.
Dr. Freitag's class was very straightforward. His lectures were slow-paced and he provided helpful lecture notes and good study guides. He has 19+ office hours each week. If you do all the assigned homework and spend time studying and pondering his lecture notes and the material, you should do fine. The class isn't all that bad.
Mark is a very smart person. I found going to his office hours helpful for the math parts of chemistry. His tests are a pain in the butt. The lecture questions were oddly specific and dragged my grade down. The homework questions which are all math were pretty easy though. Use his study guide when studying for tests.
Had Freitag for CHM201 and now for CHM331 (only professor for PChem!) and I think his class is very difficult, but manageable. Homework isn't graded, but really isn't optional because many exam Qs come from the homework directly. Ask questions! Can be intimidating, but go to office hours/send emails with questions and he responds very quickly.
Got an B+ in CHM 203 but this class was that on steroids. it was his first time teaching the 'non-advanced' version of this class but he did not treat it that way at all, test are too long for a class period and considerably difficult. To his credit though, he's very accessible outside of class, willing to help students, and knows the material.
Freitag is a brilliant professor, but his teaching style may not work for everyone. The lectures are dense, and the exams are brutally difficult. Use unstuck ai, the textbook, and office hours to stay on top of the material. The class is a real challenge, but with effort, you can do well.
Exam questions do not come from material learned in class. Says calculus is not a prerequisite, however appears on tests. You can tell he is trying to help but unfortunately I found it difficult to learn from him. A lot of hours put into the class just to pass, many more than bio.
I'll give credit to Freitag because he does have a lot of office hours, but his tests are always just pretty bad. He's stated that something would not be on a test and then put it on a test, or his lectures just don't properly cover the material he tests on. Would recommend tutoring, office hours, and the organic chemistry tutor.
Freitag is a good guy INSANELY hard class. I could not imagine taking gen chem with him. The content for pchem will require you to memorize how to do homework as well as basically everything else in the notes to do remotely well on the test. 6 exams, 1 dropped thats it. Go to office hours and go to class. Good luck!
unless you already have a good foundation of gen chem 2 or you are prepared to study for 30 hours a week, don't take him. half of our class dropped, and of the other half that stayed enrolled, about 25% are going to have to retake due to unsatisfactory grades. he is available outside of class but not very personable.
Freitag is the GOAT. Best notes ever. Excellent lectures. Witty as heck. Wonderfully bald. Imagine Mr. Clean became a theoretical chemist. Don't like quizzes or homework grades? God bless ya, that's fine. Generous guy, very smart. Not an easy class, but you'll leave a smarter person.
Great person that really does a good job of explaining at the level you need. Do NOT take if you are just trying to get credit. If you care, so does he.
Dr. Freitag's lectures are very well organized and easy to follow along with. Tests can be challenging, but he gives a study sheet and if you prepare well enough you will do just fine. Has tons of office hours every week and encourages students to attend. This class takes effort and keeping up with homework, but is very predictable.
I took him almost 8 years ago for gen chem. I went into his office hours once and he told me the sciences may not be for me after the material wasn't clicking. That discouragement should never come from an educator. I sometimes wish 18 year old me didn't listen to his advice. Smart guy, but DO NOT take him for gen chem.
Not very personable and doesn't teach very well unless you 100% get things the very first time it has been taught. Lecture-heavy, but it's easy to lose track and each lecture will build on the previous. I've taken chemistry courses with other professors at other institutions and at Creighton (and did fairly well). This professor...not so much.
A lot of students had to withdraw this when I took it. His exams and tests are hard. Very old school, but be prepared for a lot more work.
Believes chemistry is either a God given gift or not and if you have that gift then you'll pass, without it you won't. Is unwilling to help if you're struggling in class
Mark doesn't like to answer questions. His office hours are just for show, he doesn't actually answer anything. He likes to get half way through a question and then just stop and say “you know how it goes from there”. The class was bad.
