There's reading from the McGraw Hill Reader every night with journals. Tons of papers.
Very hard grader. 5 essays and 3 in class essays. Many response papers. Helpful when he wants to be.
Well, Prof. Gifford is a good one; he really wants to know the class' opinions. He's nice, i guess. All we do is readings from the McGraw reader and do journals. oh, and numerous papers and response papers. Take him he aight.
young prof. grades hard but fair. as long as you participate hes cool.
he is a good teacher. very nice and cares alot about what you think. every night you have to read and right a short double spaced summary. write alot but learn alot. i recommend him.
he's ok. Lots of reading. Grades kinda hard. lots of writing.....like little one page papers all the time. nice teacher though. A lot of effort will get you a high B.
He's a pretty hard teacher but I've learned a lot from him. He gives really great comments about the essays you write. I wouldn't take this class if you're looking for an easy A.
He is a pretty good teacher. Really nice but I have to say that there is A LOT of writing but he is very helpful and will work with u if u have problems. If u don't like to write--don't expect an A!
Professor Gifford will expect alot out of you, but it will help you in the future. If you ever need help, he makes it a point to help you. There is alot of writing in this class, but afterall it is a writing class. I enjoyed taking this class, and Gifford was a good teacher. Attendance is required, & be ready to work, but you will also learn alot.
He was a very nice teacher....although it is a lot of writing and reading in the end it will help you tremendously...highly recommended professor.
good teacher, lots of class discussion. he is willing to help you out alot. overall nice guy, doesnt grade TOO hard.
prof. gifford is a good teacher, he makes you write alot, though he's always available to help you, his class isnt very hard.
Prof. Gifford is the best teacher I've had at UTSA. I'm at UT Austin now and thanks to his class I have a 99 in the class when the class avg is 76. He's not a hard teacher, it's easy to get a C in the class. Work harder and you can get a B, but you need to bust your ass if you want an A. I'd spend many many hours on essays but it was all worth it.
He's very helpful and really cared about his students. Very easy going, great atmosphere he creates in his class. TAKE HIM!
He did not meet the requirements of the class. He did not keep in contact with students. Ignored students for weeks at a time.
the BEST english professor ive had at UTSA, i took him for writing comp 1 and 2, and his class helped me SO much for my upper division classes, (the tests are essays in upper division classes.) im so glad i took him.
He could be a good teacher but he doesnt really put a lot of interest in helping. Also takes a while to respond to emails. You can survive this class if you like writing. But he doesnt post grades, you have to ask him thats how I found out my grade. But by then it was too late to work harder to improve my grade.
I really enjoyed Prof. Gifford's class! He definitely got me to work! You have to read every night and free write about that article(s) for 10 minutes. There were about 3 or 4 essays and a bunch of in class essays. I usually got C's on every paper but strangely got a B in the class! Overall he's great and he's really attractive as well ;-)
Good professor, but class is quite tedious. Reading basically every night with 'journal' entry and quizzes the next class period. Grades pretty strictly, and will call out minor mistakes. Not easy, but you could learn something.
Gifford is a very helpful professor. He is always asking if we need any kind of help. He really wants his students to do the best in his class but if you are a slacker then you shouldnt take him because he doesnt like lazy people. I really like his teaching skills. His class is not easy nor hard. I will recommend ppl to take him!
Mr. Gifford is a great teacher and is really nice. He is very helpful and likes for you to do well. He does take attendence and doesn't like if you come to his class late. He does use the books so buy them and he grades a little hard on the papers. I reccoment him and I'm taking him again for Freshman Comp. II. Enjoy his class!
Professor Gifford is the man! Probably one of my favorite professors I've had so far. He's really likable and charming, and takes all of his students seriously. You can tell he wants everyone to think above and beyond, which creates wayyy better writers! So if you'd like a very chill but challenging work environment, take this class!
Professor Gifford is a great teacher, probably my favorite professor I have had at UTSA. He does take attendance, and you do write a lot, but it is a writting class. If you do the work and show an effort, he will go out of his way to help you. He stays after class to talk, and he will work with you on office hours as well.
Professor Gifford is a great teacher, very clear makes teaching interesting. He does want his work turned in on time and his grading is very reasonable, he cares about his students to get the best education and good habits in work. i reccomened him for WRC II class you will find his class very interesting.
Professor Gifford is a really cool guy. He allows up to three absences before he starts marking points off and allows you a ten minute grace period if you're running late before you're marked tardy. I do really well on the timed writings, been so-so at the take home essays, but I enjoy the class. He gives out quizzes, extra credit, and he's cool.
Professor Gifford keeps the class engaged with interesting topics. He's very smart, and very approachable. I did better than the majority of the class on all my essays, but I consider myself a pretty good writer. He's a picky grader so make sure to ask for help, complete your journals EARLY, and study for the quizzes and you'll do fine.
Interesting class and professor, very little dull moments. Not too many essays and overall not a tough class but he is a tough grader. I was never able to get an A on an essay. Good professor but I would not take him again, his attendance policy is ridiculous; 3 free absences, then each one takes 1 point from your average. 3 tardies=1 absence.
Prof. Gifford is great! He's funny and takes this course seriously. He does give lots of work, but if you miss something, you'll have everything else to fall back on.
I had Professor Gifford for my science/pseudoscience writing course. He's a great and interesting teacher who really cares about his subject. He engages the class and expects a lot out of students. Essays aren't bad, quizzes are straight from the book, and the readings are interesting. I would recommend this professor.
If writing is not your strong suit or your favorite class then you will struggle with Gifford. In regards to essays, Gifford is a tough grader and can leave the prompt a little vague. Also, attendance is mandatory but I think all WRC classes require attendance.
Professor Gifford is awesome! I love this class, the material is engaging and it's always a good read. Although it's fun, he grades papers SUPER HARD. It's hard getting As on papers. He is strict about grammar more than anything. You will need all the textbook he requires. And attendance is mandatory. I liked this class a lot, not so much the grade
This guy is absolutely the worst. If you think you can get away with an A because WRC 1013 was easy, you're mistaken. He's super strict on grading and deadlines and will gradually neglect to follow his own set dates as the semester goes on. He seems like a rational and nice professor in class but has incredibly high standards for an intro class.
Took this class because it sounded interesting and was. Just way too hard for an intro class. He grades very hard on papers and topics were confusing. Would not recommend taking this class.
Really hard grader. You will not get an A unless you are an English major. Interesting class discussions, and a nice guy. Too hard of a class for an intro
Professor Gifford is pretty cool. I liked his class because it makes you think about being more skeptical. I took his Hybrid course, it is a lot of online work but you just have to remember due dates. Attendance mandatory because you turn in weekly questions and journal entries. Somewhat of a hard grader but I got As on all papers. Recommend!
Gifford is a very intelligent professor. He was going to do law school but chose to teach instead. Loves what he does, and is passionate about what he does. ATTENDANCE MANDATORY. Is definitely a hard essay grader, but if you work hard you will at least get a B. Average essay grades are a C but dont let that scare you. Recommended if passionate
Mr. Gifford is a really great teacher and is passionate about what he does. He is a strict grader, the highest grade I ever made was a B, but he gives good feedback and opportunities to get extra credit on papers. There is some reading, but there are good class discussions for essay topics.
Took Gifford for the first half of Freshman Composition, and I'll be taking the second half with him, too. He's a great professor, but not necessarily an "easy grader," as people have said. He does you submit revisions of your essays for some extra points, though. Virtually no testsquizzes, if the class participates and has active discussions.
I loved Gifford. Not only is he super hot but he's very clear, corky, funny and loves what he does. He's a tough grader but He gives out bonus points on papers :)
Professor Gifford is super helpful and cares about his students. There's 4 papers total and it is easy to get at least a B on them if you put in effort. With the journals, online quizzes, and weekly questions it is easy to get an A if you do the work!!
Mark Gifford is a really awesome professor. His assignments can be confusing and he is a hard grader but he gives you so many opportunities to meet with him face to face to discuss what is wrong. He genuinely cares about seeing his students grow as writers and he is an interesting person.
He should not be allowed to teach a Hybrid course. He almost never responds to emails. His office hours are in 30 minute intervals which makes it almost impossible to attend. While his lectures are repetitive he teaches you techniques to writing, but never how he wants to see the essay exactly. Super time consuming course.
It's a fun class, but not an easy A. If you want an A make sure to work hard! There's alot of work that goes into this class, but if you stay on top of the ball you'll be fine. Lectures are interesting, but Gifford is a tough grader. HOWEVER, he makes you a better writer and you'll definitely learn. There's extra credit at the end that may help you
He gives way too much work. We have the responsibility of papers on top of four other assignments for his class each week: quizzes, readings from writing arguments and the assigned book/articles, plus weekly questions. This class is way too hard for an intro. He grades the essays mostly on grammatical errors and not content. Averages are low.
Great professor. Yeah, he's tough but he makes you a better writer. Not an easy A, which makes getting that A much more rewarding. Super interesting lectures, too. Would definitely take again.
This was a hybrid course and there was a ton of work and homework every week. He tends to pile a lot on you, so don't procrastinate or you will have all nighters. You can only afford missing 3 days of class before he fails you. Other than that he was really nice and approachable and understanding, and a good grader.
my man mark. super intelligent guy. i took his hybrid class over skepticism and pseudoscience. SO interesting. awesome lectures. a lot of work but it's easy. always available outside of class. i'm pretty sure i emailed him once around midnight and he still responded. take this guy if u really wanna learn.
One of my favorite professors. I only saw him once a week. He has a great attitude and has no shame when it comes to joking around with his students. Also, he gives plenty of opportunities to redeem your grade throughout the semester, but you have to work for it. He is always available to help and give constructive criticism. Definitely recommend!
Professor Gifford is a verb intelligent man who takes who work seriously he gives you a clear rubric but he is a tough grader you have 4 papers throughout the semester and weekly quizzes if you enjoy writing comp youll be fine but if youre not a fan you will struggle
this class wasn't easy. though he did give good feedback, it's nearly impossible to get a B or higher in his class. I would avoid him if possible, but not too bad...
Very hard grader. I would not take him unless you actually care about learning more than gpa
I attended every class, completed every assignment except for one smaller assignment, and did all extra credit. I was still worried about failing. Waaay too much work for a lower level class
This was the first class Ive ever had to drop, extremely strict grader. Expect copious amounts of work, and if you miss one thing on the essay checklists you fail the entire essay. Also if you miss one day of class you get 20 points deducted from your overall grade. Dont take unless you have endless free time. He knows his material though.
Worst online professor I've ever had. He asks WAAAY too much for a basic lower level course. His grading is extremely specific and will basically fail you if you don't think the same as him when writing pieces and make you feel stupid for it. I wouldn't take this professor again, but if you're into this type of workload, go for it.
I took his pseudoscience class and it was interesting. But when it comes to essays, Prof. Gifford is a very tough grader. Only a few people get As. There's an essay due every four weeks, but you have to complete checklist items every week or you fail the entire essay. On top of that, there's weekly questions, journals, and quizzes.
I worked so hard and this class and never got an A on a single paper. He grades too hard for a lower level class and never really tells you how to do something right when you are wrong. Definitely grades on grammatical errors than content. Would not take again
He is a VERY tough grader. I never managed an A on an essay and consequently, only managed a B on this course despite putting more hours in for this one course than my other 3.. combined. It's almost as if he creates problems within your essays rather than finding them. Mr. Gifford covers exciting concepts; they're just delivered poorly.
He has a ton of assignments due weekly but if you do them on time and complete them well, it works out in your favor. He grades the essays insanely hard but it is only because he cares about the subject. Overall, his course was tough but beneficial and he provides extra credit at the end of the course. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE TIME TO DO THE WORK
Shouldve avoided this course. If you dont care about GPA or are very passionate about writing, take this course. He grades as if youre in college to become an author, despite it being an entry level class. Seriously, I thought I was a great writer and ignored all the reviews thinking they were over exaggerating. Boy was I mistaken.
don't do it.
Horrible professor. Mountains of homework and papers and does not grade easy. Takes too long to email back and also lies about receiving the emails. Very condescending and talks down on students. The class is entry level but he treats it like its the end all be all. Do yourself a favor and pick any other professor.
horrible
Grades vary hard on essays and require you to have a ton of checklist items to fulfill on essays. If you fail to do them you fail. Way too hard for no reason. Would not recommend this professor.
Do not take this professor. He is good at giving feedback but grades way too hard and if you miss an assignment the highest you can get on a grade is a D-. The highest grade in my class was a B-.
This teacher sucks do not take him.
Faught hard for a B. This professor is not good and gives a lot of HW for no reason. If you want to suffer with your GPA take this class. A lot of my friends ended barely with a C-
Whenever he would teach us anything about a subject he spoke in a very erudite tone and did not make the content easy to digest. He also uses checklists to grade papers that included steps like rough draft and works cited, and if you were missing any of the things on the checklist he wouldn't give you a grade over 63 on the final paper. Hated it.
Professor aimed to make course way more difficult than necessary. He would give awful feedback and gave no lenience. Overall not enjoyable and not worth the suffering. A waste in my opinion.
Genuinely felt like the professor didn't want to be there and seemed like he wanted to make the course as difficult as possible. He also gave no lenience for students and just overall seemed to hate to be there.
Extremely hard grader. If you're not a writing major or an excellent writer you will struggle. Every paper was a C and just overall he didn't improve my writing in the slightest. I understand the work and deadlines is a utsa writing thing but this class was extremely stressful, unfortunately.
Professor Giffords's class on Pseudoscience was interesting, and the content covered is applicable to future learning. The ideas and subjects we studied throughout the course were always interesting, and the class challenges you to challenge your worldview. The essays were tough and long but can be fun to write with the right subject.
Video notes are short and give answers for quizzes. Quizzes are short, unlimited in time. 10 min journal entries. His lectures helps with essays, he gives detailed instructions for essays. Extra credit which could raise grades up a letter. He has fast responses and offers zoom meetings. Remember, watch his videos and attend his helpful lectures!
This teacher is brutal. I only attended the first day before I decided to switch-- his demands were insane! Hours of homework a week, plus an essay every month or so with a required checklist with things like "attend this workshop" and "have your rough draft completed by the second week"... crazy expectations for a Freshman Composition II class.
very very tough grader with pointless checklists for all essays. If a checkpoint is missed you can only get a 65 on the essay as the best grade, even if everything is turned in on time you will still most likely only get a C for the essay. NOT WORTH THE STRESS! Tons of homework and tons of essays, drop the class asap or do not choose this one.
Professor Gifford is a great teacher. He genuinely cares about writing and your understanding of it. With that being said, he is an extremely tough grader. If you care about your GPA, I personally wouldn't recommend his class. He is extremely good at what he does but that comes with him catching all of your mistakes at all times.
Professor Gifford is a passionate teacher who genuinely knows a lot. He teaches his subjects in a way that makes them easy to understand and applicable to real-life situations. His teaching methods can be quite tough for some students. However, he is caring and funny. Attend class (mandatory), take notes, and dedicate time to writing your essays.
I was baffled when I saw this professor's score was anything above a 1, but please take into account that most of the recent reviews don't go higher than a 3. The professor's expectations for a REQUIRED Freshman Comp. class were absolutely ridiculous and he was honestly asking for too much. I've never had a teacher so rigid, 100% do not recommend.
I took this course online fall 2022 and honestly thought this professor taught pretty well and was very well informed. The essay topics were very engaging as well. He would offer meeting times to get essay revisions through zoom which I thought was very helpful. The only thing I did not really like was the extensive end of semester portfolio.
BRUH. how does this man have a 3.3 genuinely? he is so confusing and offers absolutely no guidance. actually. I'll submit my ideas to him and he'll just be like "That's not right" but wont tell me HOW TO MAKE IT RIGHT. It's actually so frustrating. the things he expects from a freshman in an intro writing class are insane too. bro needs to chill
IMPOSSIBLE to reach outside of class. can take 2-3 days before giving a response. extremely picky when it comes to grading and being particular about a certain thing. RARELY takes work if it isn't in the module by 5pm. i have never had a professor this nit-picky about any little thing you write. takes the class way too seriously for a freshman comp
Lectures were decent but not amazing. Lots of homework each week. Essays seemed to be graded arbitrarily with some grammatical errors counting for more against some students compared to others. Overall, the class is nearly impossible to get anything more than an A- due to essays being graded at a high of 90 and require you to do extra credit.
while this professor clearly cares about what he does he is WAY too tough of a grader. for this being a required FRESHMAN class it is absolutely ridiculous how hard it is to get good grades on Weekly questions or essays. He gives way too much weekly work and is also extremely passive aggressive.. do not take this class unless you are a writer.
I highly suggest you take another professor; save yourself the trouble; there are way better English professors at UTSA other than this one; he is one of the worst here. I wish I had never taken him . He is so highly unfair, and the way he teaches is not great at all; he isnt much helpful either; he will judge you if you do not understand .
Professor Gifford is demanding and lectures heavy. However, you actually learn how to write and the importance of good writing. He is not an easy professor because he will challenge you no matter your level. But i completely recommend his class for overall life materials. 10/10 for people that want to learn, don't take him if you're lazy.
If you are a low IQ individual that cannot follow basic instructions about due dates and checklist requirements, do not take Gifford. He is clear on expectations and gives great essay feedback. While the class felt like a Carl Sagan fan club at times with outdated video lectures, you will become a better writer. Be prepared for a high workload.
He's a very passionate professor who greatly comprehends the material he teaches. I enjoyed his lecture and his accessibility when reaching out. However, he is far too rigid of a grader for a freshman course. This course feels like it was designed as a 3000-level English clash explicitly designed for English majors.
Absolutely amazing professor- I found his lectures very enjoyable. Gifford also left super helpful feedback on my writing, and I feel that my writing and research skills genuinely improved throughout this course. He's way too strict with grading and attendance though, which took some of the fun out of the class and made it super stressful at times.
Absolutely Terrible and it's comical. No time to be a professor and genuinely help students but rather talk about his excursions, himself, which nobody CARES and grades like he got picked on in highschool. You try to talk with him he acts like a child. The instructor is embarrassing I hope he truly finds what he likes, quit wasting students time.
This professor gives plenty of homework that is difficult to balance if you are taking several other courses. I managed, but for sure struggled to complete the weekly readings, journals, and question. We had a total of 4 essays and a group project. If you already know how to write you should be ok since he expects you to know.
Ok so to start remember that not everyone is an english major because this is a required freshman class. I understand grading hard if it is an english class for english majors but like dude we are just trying to get our basics done. Also u r randomly put in groups and if they suck then u are done for.
He is an exceptional professor who provides incredibly detailed feedback on papers. While he can be intense, especially since many students need the credit, he is strict with grades. However, if you put in the effort, he is more than willing to help you succeed. Overall, he is a fantastic teacher.
Professor Gifford seems to be a chill guy. However, the workload put on students is insane. monthly essays, weekly journals, questions, plus INSANELY tough grading standards. I'm sure there are other writing professors here at utsa who will provide a less stressful experience for a freshman-level course.
He was a very strict teacher but he's kind sometimes I guess. He gave a good amount of homework but it wasn't terrible. He focused on pseudoscience and theories so if you like that stuff then you might enjoy his class. I personally would not take a class under him again but no hate to him.
Probably the easiest and best English teacher at UTSA, he is intense but genuinely nice and not a hard grader at all. Lots of reading and writing homework every week but none of it is hard other than essay 3. Overall would take again, if you took AP english in high school this course and this teacher will not be hard or surprising at all ;)
Should've listened to these ratings and not taken him. Him and his class is way too much for a freshmen class not to mention outdated! He's an extremely hard grader and if you have other, more important classes I wouldn't take him due to the heavy work load. I guess his class would be okay if it was a higher level class or your major. NEVER AGAIN!
There was just so much for a normal freshman class with him. At the beginning, he said the workload would be a lot.... Be prepared lmao
I thought that taking this professor wouldn't be that bad and just wanted to get the class out of the way, NO. If you can wait then wait to take it.
