He's super goofy, and a very fun teacher. His lectures aren't amazing but he has a good heart and it makes putting effort into the class worth it.
He is literally the best professor ever. He's so funny and kind and making effort to remember all the students' names. Tests are easy and have a high curve. If you got a B- in exam, you'll probably receive a B in grades.
If you need to take Microeconomics, there is no other option other than Mark Greer. He has an amazing curve system for his test where he basically sets his students up for success. This class is what you make of it, if you show up you'll do well, if not study for a few hours and you'll do the same. You basically go to class to talk to Prof Greer.
Professor Greer is an amazing professor. Although his lectures can be a little long, he really entertains with his kind heart and goofy mannerisms. He is a professor that really grows on you and he is also very knowledgable about his topic. Overall, he is an awesome choice
"Greer Backstop" is the most beautiful phrase in the English language. He curves harder than any other teacher I've had. I once got an 85% on a test and ended with a 103% after the Greer Backstop kicked in.
Very odd, quirky professor but I loved it. Made economics interesting. only grades are 3 midterms and final. only material covered on exams is what his lectures are on so go to class, take good notes, study, and an A is very manageable.
Greer is such an amazing professor. He gives you every chance to do well on exams- practice problems, practice exams, review sessions, etc. he's quirky but keeps the class interesting and he cares about everyone doing well. Would recommend going to class because the exams are based mostly on notes in class
Greer really tries to be funny and make econ interesting, and while I did appreciate that, he was not good at actually teaching the subject. I only learned the material because I read the textbook and learned from there. The class is very test-heavy, and his grading criteria and curves make no sense. Hard class, especially as a freshman.
On top of heavy lectures and incessant email, Professor Greer offers only four, 20 question exams to determine the entire grade for the class. He does not post the notes on BB, so lectures are mandatory. The tests are fairly difficult, and require ample studying. Overall, he was not an effective professor for beginning Econ.
Professor Greer is very quirky, and people either love or hate him for it. No matter your opinion, you'll definitely laugh at his weird antics. I found his class really hard to understand, but mostly because of its quick pace than his teaching style. He's a caring and motivated professor, but you'll have to work for a good grade.
Professor Greer is the best Professor i met in the first semester. He is very helpful in class and outside class. He will show up in the library on weekends to help those students who have questions on the practice problems. His exam review section and practice exam are also very helpful. Highly Recommend!!!
Prof. Greer is an incredible teacher and I cannot recommend him highly enough!! His class is difficult (but that's more due to the information, not his teaching), but if you go to his office he will explain everything to you in clear detail! Prof. Greer is one of the most enthusiastic and passionate teachers at WM; put in the work and u'll be fine!
Professor Greer is an incredible teacher, he is the first professor I met in library every weekend to help students with any academic problems. His lecture sometimes will be long and boring but just finish the practice problems and take good notes, then you will get good score
Greer is a nice man, however I found his class the least beneficial of any course I have ever taken. His tests are largely based on only math rather than concepts, and he rarely teaches anything relevant to his tests in class. The tests rely on reading (at least 3 chapters per test) and completion of lots and lots of practice problems.
I will never take another class with Greer. He's incredibly unclear, regularly makes mistakes, even on exams, and sends a dozen emails a week. Lectures are incredibly confusing, to the point where it feels like he's speaking a different language, and we never do any practice problems. He made it very hard to do well. This class was very frustrating
Greer is an AMAZING Professor. Be forewarned, if you do not like a teacher who is a little goofy, Greer is not for you. However, Greer is the kindest and most accessible professor I have ever had. He will make significant effort to learn your name and make himself available to answer any questions you have.
Greer is a character. He will often interrupt his own lecture to talk to a student he spots about their athletics event/new shave/etc. However, he is very accessible, provides numerous practice problems, and cares about his students. It's a straightforward course. If you fill out the study guides he provides and do practice problems, you'll do fine
Professor Greer is an amazing teacher. He is knowledgeable about his classes and is also available outside the class. He will sow up in the library every Sunday from 12:00pm-2:00pm and his office hour is also full of people. Although he never check attendance, you could not pass his exams if you miss classes. A little bit test heavy.
Prof Greer cares about his students and works to make himself accessible outside of class. However, he is not a good professor. His lectures are unclear and his grading feels arbitrary. His tests are short and incredibly hard so that even if you know the information well, you can miss only a few questions and already be at a 75. Do not recommend.
One of the best professors I've ever had - witty at times, and caring for his students. Don't forget to put in the hard yards to get the grade you deserve.
His lectures are awesome and he knows what he is doing. He will also admit when he is wrong and help you to understand the material. His tests can be difficult b/c 1 Q wrong and you get a 95, but they're good /clear tests. He provides study guides and offers so much outside help to his students! HIghly recommend
Greer is so nice and pretty funny too. He offers office hours and review sessions which definitely do help. However, his tests are so so hard and often deviate from what's been taught in class. You can study for hours but if you flub a few multiple choice questions, you'll end up with a C. 3/5 because I love him, but I wouldn't recommend his class.
Greer is an awesome person, but he makes his tests purposefully difficult and tries to make students mess up. Studying for days and weeks at a time does not work for his tests. Either you get the material or you do not. When taking the class Greer was funny and a great person, but I did not enjoy that he would make tests purposefully difficult.
Really amazing Professor. His lectures are clear and makes clear what needs to be known on exams. He's always accessible during office hours. If you attend class and study for tests, I guarantee a good grade. Plus, he is very comical and genuine.
There are numerous exams every 2 weeks or so to cover certain topics. He provides all the materials to succeed (practice questions, practice tests, lecture slides). The exam gravitates around lecture slides and practice problems while textbook is for context of problems if you are new to Macroeconomics. Attendance recommended as there is key info..
I believe that professor Greer is an acquired taste. He's goofy and ridiculous in lecture which makes it difficult to understand him. His tests are designed to be difficult, so make sure you use all of the resources he provides.
Your grade mostly depends on 4-6 exams you take throughout the semester, i.e. if you average out a DECENT score on those tests, you're golden. He curves to keep the average at a B and drops your worst test. This guy is really being incredibly fair and helpful! If you know how to study (use the practice exams + review his ppts) you'll do well. GL!
Generally hard to follow teaching style. Seems like people who have a natural affinity for econ like him because they understand it regardless of how good he teachers and because he is entertaining, but his lecture style is repetitive and his question phrasing is very odd. Also creates like 9 test drafts, which makes each test riddled with errors.
Professor Greer did a really good job of being accessible and explaining macro. He used piazza to answer online questions, which was extremely valuable. While the number of quizzes may seem daunting, they are actually really helpful practice for the midterms and final. Do the problem sets, go to class, study for the quizzes, and you'll be fine.
Very poor lecturer, & struggles to explain the more complicated concepts in macro. He types on the slides & fills them up with tons of text, to the point that you can't read them. He also has very strange mannerisms, like drinking energy drinks while lecturing, then burping into his microphone. If you don't want to teach yourself, avoid his class.
Greer can get a bad rep depending who you talk to, but I really liked him. Let me explain: this man is crazy, like certifiable insane, but its absolutely hilarious. That being said he is really a great guy and wants to know all his students by name in a 100 person class. There are 3 tests, mostly multiple choice and they aren't too hard if you study
Greer is weird as hell but he's so generous, kind, funny, and genuinely interested in his students. He wants to help you succeed. Downsides: no extra credit opportunities, only 4 tests, tempting to skip. Pros: no homework, low commitment, lowest test dropped. If you do the practice problems and make an effort to study for tests you'll get an A.
He's a great dude. Even if sometimes during lectures he goes on tangents, he says something goofy to keep you attentive. The exams can get difficult, but he's really accessible outside of class and gives you a lot of resources to practice and learn. I've bothered him more than once right before an exam to go over a last few things.
You will end the semester with an ECON GUT
Greer was very funny in a cringey way. He's good at teaching the class. It's not awful if you do most of the many problem sets he gives you in preparation for exams. Lectures were long and kind of boring, but there was no homework or preparation other than studying.
In addition to not knowing the definition of a basic economic concept such as opportunity cost, Greer played games and intentionally tried to hurt students by putting trick questions on exams which he called "rottweilers" and was forced to curve all exams by as much as 20 points. The averages for all versions of the third exam were in the 60s.
Don't know why people say he's not good. He's organized, cares about his students, and his "rottweiler" questions keep you on your toes (but if you just come to class and read the textbook, then you will get an EASY A by just putting in the work!) His ppts are good too, especially if you're like me and want there to be clear structure and visuals.
Chill guy who is accessible outside of class. Good system of class where you are aware of what's going to be on the test. Goofy but seems to know what he's talking about.
He is passionate and makes each class interesting. I appreciate that he posts the powerpoints on Blackboard before class to take notes on them. Overall it was difficult, but he went out of his way to try and help the students at every opportunity with review sessions. The only issue is that he was overly biased about a specific economic system.
Okay, so I'm not an econ person and thus this class could only be but so good for me. That being said, I think that Prof. Greer is a good and funny guy, but it's very easy to zone out in his class. I found it hard to focus most of the time but he always made sure he was accessible to students even when he was going through his own personal things.
Greer is hilarious and insane. The material is not hard at all to grasp but I showed up to the lectures just to listen to the guy. Don't bother getting the textbook you won't need it, save yourself the 40 bucks. Would for sure recommend the class as a GPA boost or just to learn a little about ECON.
Professor Greer is just an absolute stand up guy. He is super helpful and available inside and outside of class. I found the material to be super challenging, but managed to get an okay grade anyways because of how well he explained it. Definitely get the textbook if you are shaky with the material though.
Good guy, but maybe not the best for explaining simple economic principles. Only grades are 5 tests and final. Lectures can be boring sometimes but he does his best to make his examples relatable and interesting. He makes sure that the class median on all tests doesnt fall below a B. Theres always a study guide before the tests as well.
Professor Greer is fantastic. He is very knowledgable about economics and makes lectures fun and interesting (hilarious guy). Your grade is determined by five tests and a final, and the tests aren't that hard as long as you study the lecture notes and do the practice problem sets. Highly recommend any class with Greer.
5 exams and a final. replaces lowest exam grade with the final exam grade if it is better than lowest grade. Hilarious but some might be turned off by his odd accent. very caring and approachable. Makes an effort to learn all 200 students names that he teaches. Lectures are mediocre. Must take notes to do well. Lived off of Khan academy
Very nice person and super approachable. I thought his class was pretty difficult and only did well in the class because I got a good grade on the final exam. His lectures are long and he's not super interesting. I studied a lot for the final and did well but did poorly on his three other exams. Offers generous curves.
I took econ prior to this course so it was considerably easy. He tends to curve tests drastically, which led me to not give 100% effort to get a good grade. A quirky man and not a difficult class, but his dedication to teaching through his own personal hardships was very endearing. I never got individual help but he was eager to offer it.
This class is only based on 5 tests and one final (replaces your lowest test grade), and doesn't provide any other grading material. If you are a bad test-taker, and prefer other forms of assignments (essays, homework, projects), do not take this course with this professor.
This class was pretty easy, especially because he curves to a median of 85. Dr. Greer genuinely cares about his students. Sometimes he talks about one slide for too long, but he really wants to help students learn. I heard that his 102 class was harder/not as good, so I took that with a different professor. Overall, this was a solid class.
Greer gets a bad wrap sometimes because he is a bit quirky, but he is seriously the most genuine, caring man. He learns almost all his students' names and is always accessible out of class. Macro is definitely harder than Micro, but he provides a lot of practice questions. Exams are multiple choice and easy short answer - plus, he curves a lot.
Professor Greer is a cool guy, very quirky and also pretty funny. Learns everyone's names and will remember you. Even out of a class of over 100, he still remembers me and who I was friends w in his class a semester later. Very accessible, sometimes a bit confusing. Best advice is to do the practice problems before the tests and you will do well.
He is a nice guy, his power points are a little dry. You don't rlly need to go to class but it is helpful. His testing system is confusing but he curves a lot and wants his students to succeed. Overall, a good class with a prof that I would take again.
THIS IS THE PROFESSOR YOU WANT. He's funny, he knows the material very well, his lectures are clear and informative, and he posts a ton of practice problems and is really helpful if you have a question before a test. The only downside is that you're only graded by a few midterms and a final, but the final does replace your lowest midterm grade.
Professor Greer is a very caring professor. He wants his students to succeed. You really don't have to go or pay attention in class if you do the practice problems and ask him any questions that you might have gotten wrong. His tests are kind of hard as well, but if you study for them you'll be fine.
Greer is a very funny and genuine person. I took his 101 class which was not hard at all but I have heard differently about 102. He does a very good job of making complex concepts understandable to people who know nothing about econ. Class is based on 5 tests and nothing else which can be stressful but there are plenty of practice problems online.
Makes econ fun! enjoyed his class
He makes plenty of resources available so everyone can succeed. There are readings, but since in class he just teaches what's in them it's not necessary to actually do them. Just make sure to do some studying in the days before a test and you'll be fine. He's funny and friendly, and is very good at replying to emails and stuff if need be.
Professor Greer actually teaches the course instead of assigning reading and assuming students completely absorbed everything. It is very organized with lots of resources for practice. He is also very accessible in case his students need anything and grades in an understanding way. His MicroEcon course is relatively easy if you come to class
Professor Greer is a gem. He is definitely VERY quirky, but it's great because he keeps things interesting. But besides that, he is very accessible outside of class and I could tell he definitely cared about our success. Only graded by 5 tests and a final though so be warned. I didn't do great, but it's not Greer's fault that I'm abysmal at econ.
Professor Greer is a quirky professor, but he is great! Be prepared for some weird comments in lectures but they are very straightforward and he puts the PowerPoints on blackboard. Practice problems and old exams are also posted so you can be prepared for exams. He is really caring and always willing to help you and offers lots of office hours!
Greer's class is graded solely on exams, but he is super available to help students prepare. He hosts extra review sessions, tons of office hours, and provides practice problems and practice exams. His lectures are sometimes boring, but overall he is a. funny. & caring professor who genuinely wants his students to succeed.
MY GUY. Love Professor Greer. Once you get used to his eccentric personality in class, he is a gem! His notes/lectures are so clear, he is super helpful outside of class, and gives you tons of practice problems to work on. He is much calmer in office hours and even tries to learn your names (which is rare for someone teaching a big intro class).
Greer is a very sweet professor. You do have to put in work, but he provides you with all the tools necessary to get through the course. The class was based off of purely exams, but he is always available to help with any questions. Overall a solid professor.
Weird guy, doesn't really know how to lecture. Class wasn't too challenging
Keeps things light and great at explaining concepts. Some may not recommend him because he sometimes makes jokes off topics, but I think it keeps the class light and fun. I would definitely take him over any other econ prof for 101 and 102.
Prof. Greer is a hilarious, very kind man. I find his personality and jokes very endearing. He even learned my name, which I appreciated in a big lecture class. Most of the grading comes from exams, so make sure you study, attend review sessions, and DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS. The tests (minus the final) are pretty short, but he sometimes curves.
Prof Greer is a weird guy, but a great professor. He lectures well and cares about his students a lot. The material isn't too difficult. I would definitely recommend doing the practice problems he posts, they help a lot. Overall, a very good course!
One of the nicest professors you'll ever meet super quirky and funny. However, his lectures can be very long and boring, and the class grade is solely based on exam scores (w big curves). He is very accessible for office hours and wants his students to succeed; he provides practice problems, practice exams, and extra review sessions.
Professor Greer is actually amazing. He took the time to actually get to know all of his students and he really does care. Of course, he is a bit quirky and has a great sense of humor. Trust me, you want to take his class.
Extremely nice professor but is very fair when it comes to grading (no special treatment).
Greer was probably my favorite professor I have had so far. His exams are not easy, but they are doable. Greer is really there for his students, especially during the pandemic. He is hilarious and a good instructor. If you keep up with the practice problems youll have no problem in his class.
I took Macro with Greer and liked him so much that I took my Coll 100 with him in the next semester. He is hilarious and through that skill makes the 80 minute lectures enjoyable. The curves on the econ exams and feedback in C&ID make getting As in both classes easy if you are willing to meet with him outside of class; he is very accommodating .
Mark Greer: the Man, the Myth, the Meme. Case in point: during the final exam, a close friend spilled his bottle on the floor and got his exam wet. Greer then blurted out "Uh-oh, Will spilled his vodka!" He always said hello when I saw him at the rec center or walking around. Do the practice problems, talk them over with him, and you will do well!
You gotta take the opportunity to go through the circuit with him at the rec. Great sense of humor and you should really have him as a prof at some point.
Professor Greer is an awesome guy. If you take one of his classes, expect to work hard and to have relatively challenging exams. He does make his exams hard, but provides clear expectations beforehand so that you know what you are getting into. He wants every single one of his students to succeed. His class is not easy, but Greer is passionate.
You either like him or you don't! I found his jokes and lecture style to be over the top and annoying. He takes on voices and can be very goofy. It was grating. Lectures were clear at times and confusing at others. Having said that, he cares so much about his students and will bend over backwards to support them!
Professor Greer is one of the best professors I have encountered while at W&M! He is so funny which makes his classes interesting, and his exams are exactly like his practice problems! He is also very kind and cares a lot about his students. His Greer Backstop is legendary, which makes it pretty easy to get an A.
Professor Greer has been a fantastic professor. Even though his class was asynchronous, he still managed to make his lectures personable. He explained all of the content thoroughly and helpfully. Even better, he has a sense of humor! His jokes helped keep me interested even in long lectures. I would recommend taking Econ with Professor Greer.
Professor Greer is quite a character (in a good way). I had him for my COLL 100 and while it was definitely a good amount of work, Professor Greer is very knowledgable of the subject and gives good feedback. Expectations are abundantly clear. Very accessible outside of class and really interesting to talk to about anything during office hours.
Professor Greer made taking Econ online and asynchronous not so bad. The content was hard, but he was very accessible outside of class, and had office hours twice a week over zoom and in person. It was beneficial to read the textbook and watch all of the panopto lectures. He's a good lecturer who's pretty funny too.
I LOVE Prof Greer. He made ECON 101 really enjoyable. He was great with online learning. His lectures are engaging and really funny. The only grades were 5 uncumulative tests and the final. They weren't bad, he gives lots of review material but def read the textbook and do practice problems too. He is accessible outside the class. A real gem.
Capitalism and Its Discontents is a straightforward class that I was easily able to obtain an A in. There are readings, but the class content basically covers them, so don't bother reading. There are 2 main presentations and 2 main drafts of a website which is the focus of the class. Greer is also very approachable and helps direct your project.
Money & Banking is probably the most important class, in my opinion, for any econ, finance, or any business school student to take. This was probably my favorite class that I have ever taken at W&M. Definitely take it with prof. Greer, lectures are enthusiastic and keeps me awake (a hard feat to do at 9am!!) This class was amazing.
Greer's ECON 101 was a pleasure to take. Although limited by an asynchronous format, his humor and passion made his lectures relatable and enrapturing. Course grade was entirely comprised of 5 exams, conducted through Honorlock. He is extremely flexible with extenuating circumstances. Easily accessible outside of class and provided many resources.
very nice fellow and good at explaining ECON. The class was asynchronous this semester and thus impossible, but I feel like under normal circumstances he would be an ideal professor to have. Only grades are exams every two weeks. Extra credit is not possible.
Professor Greer is probably fine as an in person professor, but he does not have a good online class structure. There are exams every two weeks. This is it. Very easy to fall behind. Professor Greer gives his students many resources and exams are not impossible. He uses honorlock. Cram and you will not do well. Office hours are useful.
He's always there to answer any questions - just shoot him an email or post on piazza. Although the class is content-heavy, it's not difficult to do well if you stay on top of the lecture videos and do the practice. He has tests frequently, but as long as you study at least 3 days in advance, you should be okay. He also curves if necessary.
I really struggled with Money and Banking and don't recommend this class to anyone besides Econ majors who intuitively understand the concepts. However, Professor Greer was so caring & patient, and it's clear that he wants his students to do well. He spent hours with me in office hours reworking practice probs and re-explaining concepts. Hard class
Greer is a dynamic lecturer and a true character. He uses powerpoint to cover the main topics of money and banking, and provides ample opportunities for practice before exams, which there are a six of. Go to class, do the practice problems and practice exams, then ask him questions and you'll do great in this course with Greer. He's funny too!
The best way to describe Greer is insane, but in a good way. Funny and scatterbrained, but good at explaining difficult concepts. Grade is entirely determined by five tests & a cumulative final, which are easy if you understand the material. Do the practice problems! Overall not a difficult class, but probably boring if you aren't into economics.
Professor Greer is extremely knowledgeable, but his lectures made me fall asleep half the time. If they were more simulating, the class would've been so much better. Since it's a COLL 100, you have to make a website that's due at the end of the semester. It was a lot of work, but that's all you do in the class so it's easy to manage.
It is very clear that Prof. Greer cares about his students and his work. He is extremely accessible outside of class, and made an effort to meet with students 1 on 1. For ECON 100, most of the work is independent, so I didn't feel very motivated to come to class. Lectures weren't that helpful. Don't procrastinate in this course.
The class had no assignments. All the grade credit was divided into 4 midterms and a final. Graded assignments or problem sets would definitely help as most students were clueless until the last week of class when he would post an optional practice exam. Overall, the class seemed a bit too difficult than needed, and most of my classmates agreed.
Makes grading criteria crystal clear: 4 tests and 1 final, which can be a bit intense, but good thing is, you have his study guides and practice questions to follow, so as long as you work hard and go to office hours to ask questions, youll be good. Therefore, expectations are clear. Very caring professor. Its such a pity that W&M sees him go.
I took this class with no background in econ, but Prof. Greer made it doable and interesting. Lectures and practice problems covered everything on tests, and he was even willing to give up an hour of his Sunday mornings for office hours before exams. Grade is entirely based on tests, but with dedication, an A is feasible. Good choice for Micro!
Classes/material are fine, exams are average to hard. HOWEVER, if you respect yourself in the slightest, don't take any of his classes. He has little to no respect for students as I have experienced and so have friends who have taken some of his other classes. Not worth the phycological gymnastics needed to take his class.
Professor Greer has been one of my favorite professors at William and Mary. He is always willing to help and makes his expectations clear. He gives you a study guide before exams that are a clear outline of the exam and is willing to answer any questions. He is a quirky guy and keeps his lectures engaging and interesting.
Prof. Greer is very caring about his students. He wants everyone to do well and will reach out to students to meet one on one to keep everyone on track. The lectures are boring but they are not too important, most of the work is done outside of the class. He is a very fair grader and the course load is very manageable.
Professor Greer is one of my favourite professors at W&M. Money & Banking is not an easy class, but Professor Greer is very good at explaining concepts and balance sheets. It is 100% exam over the course of the semester, but he posts plenty of practice problems and practice exams. The course content is highly relevant and interesting!
Prof. Greer is an experience. I don't agree with a lot of things he says, but regardless, he seriously cares so much about his students and is so available and accommodating whenever needed. The class is really easy, and you can do a lot of the work ahead of time. I recommend it overall.
Prof. Greer made Money & Banking enjoyable and highlighted its relevance to the current economic situation. The material is not easy, and the grade consists of 3 regular exams and a cumulative final but Greer is very accessible outside class and posts plenty of practice problems and practice exams. If you work hard, you will do very well!
He had very boring lectures that would drone on for an hour and 20 min, but you don't need to pay attention to them as he publishes the slides. He wants his students to do well and is very accessible outside of class and works to meet with all students. You make a website in the class and it wasn't hard at all if you don't procrastinate too much
Greer is such a good and funny professor, and a genuinely good person! Econ 311 can be a tough class if you haven't taken accounting (or just are bad at math), but he's very helpful during office hours and wants you to succeed. Attendance isn't mandatory, but definitely go to class and just follow along with the Powerpoint, and you'll do fine!
Amazing Professor. Honestly, very passionate. He will literally help you so much if you need it. If you want an easy, fun, and inspirational coll 100 taught by a very enthusiastic and helpful professor, take this class.
Very caring professor, he wants you to do well. Stay on top of your assignments and you will be fine.
