Awesome teacher, hard as hell class. Hilarious, teaches every class barefoot in a tiki shirt and shorts. must work hard in class, but interesting.
very interesting..never thought i would be interested in evolution and our orgins..this is an easy class to get an A in as long as u pay attention and go to class,ur grade is dependent on the interactive questions u answer in class; it's also very helpful in the midterms and final later on. quirky, funny guy
Good lecturer and good sense of humor-- really easy going. Take notes in class and copy down the slid-lecture questions-- they come up on exams.
Very good at his job. Knows his stuff, and explains everything very clearly. Take good notes, will be needed on test. Though class had an inevitable impersonal feel, I wouldn't hesistate to take a course from him again.
Mark is a great teacher. Very clear and practical. Funny too! If you want to make him extra happy, bring chocolate! Labs are fun and quizes easy enough if you attend lectures, take good notes and don't miss out on the labs. His papers are a little scary, but again, if you take good notes and pay attention to the lectures you'll do just fine.
Cool class. We had these electronic quiz questions that counted for a lot of points so you need to go to class every time. Half the tests questions are from the quizzes and you can print them off the website. I ended up with a B.
Class was amazing, learned a lot. Really good writing practice. Great slide shows and visual aides. Especially liked all the funny Calvin and Hobbes and other cartoons.
awesome class...i usually sleep thru science-type classes, but this one was really interesting, and he really knows what hes talking about. great class, great prof.
Mark can drive you crazy with the work, but rarely has a teacher pushed me more in a good way than Mark has.
What can I say about this character..? He knows his stuff from A to Z.. He's the kind of teacher that will not answer a question if you haven't tried looking for the answere first (wonder why?), but he'll work with you in the process.. Great instructor! Fun, energetic, smart, and is always there when you need him....
Mark assigns essays and the purpose of those is to make sure you understand the material- you need to understand things not only in parts (details) but in whole (big pictures). If you're not clear, go see him in his office; he's always willing to help. He may seem abrupt at first, but he cares about his students. I am learning a lot in his class.
Mark knows this subject like the back of his hand, but sometimes forgets that his students don't. He is willing to help when the subject is difficult, but he will make you try to figure out the answers out for yourself first. I would definitely recommend this class to other people because Mark knows how to make you learn your stuff!
Mark Griffin is extremely knowledgable about the course materials, and always helps when help is seeked.
Good Lectures, You Say? No Tests, You Say? What could possibly be wrong with this picture? The 4 20+ take home assignments are lame and I'd rather have taken tests. I get it- its to help us learn the material but it was overkill and overdemanding for the material being presented.
this was my third class with mark. he's a cornucopia of biological facts. i had no issue with the four 20+ page papers, i just wish that he'd realize that not everyone has the retention skills that he possesses. i can honestly say that i've developed calluses on my fingers from writing so much in his classes.
Awsome teacher. Knows his stuff and is very approachable, although don't expect him to give you any straight answers on identifications; he expects you to figure it out yourself (duh!). Definitely a guy dedicated to teaching, and to anthropology.
The class is very large but he makes it feel very small. It is very interesting and he has an amazing teaching style. I highly reccommend him.
He has a lame sense of humor. You have to use a remote to ask daily quiz questions in his class and the remote is annoying to use. If you and a few other people in the class show up late and want to join in so you can answer the quiz questions, he won't go back to previous questions. Does not know all the quiz answers yet he puts them up.
3 exams. no real final. read, go to class, do practice online easy A i guess. large lecture classes are always easy. not big assignments given. attendance is necessary b/c he gives quizzes everyday. always saying everything he says is wrong. so be careful.
mark is an amazing teacher. i really enjoyed his teaching style. he's great at asking the class questions during the lecture to get us thinking. the quiz questions before and after class are helpful too. just sucks because you cant get ther late. i wasnt interested in anthropology really until i took this class-he makes it really interesting.
i love this man. he's got bill murray humor, and his lectures/ tests/ etc. are incredibily easy. i suggest not buying the book, or at least share it with a friend. i never read it, and got a B+ in the class. (the book is over $90.) i never enjoyed going to classes except for this one.

He's a smart guy, good teacher. Kind of an jerk at times and his in class quizzes are unfair after film days, but he gave me an A so we cool dog. Learned a LOT of interesting things. BEWARE YOU WILL HAVE TO SPEND AROUND $130 TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CLASS!!!
mark is completely awesome. his class is FASINATING the best one i took my freshman year. it's not the easiest class in the world - you do have to study for the exams but he doesn't test you on anything he hasn't covered so if you show up you'll be fine! i got an A in the class by studying my notes - i never touched my book so don't waste your mone

Great lectures, very well versed in his subject matter and clearly loves it. Book was necessary imho, despite what others have said. Know your terms and write down the factoids he throws out to get those trick test questions right. Open book quizzes are 1/2 the grade which helped alot. Overall a great class!
You need to go to every class or you won't do well. In-class questions every session are 50% of the grade. Everything is multiple guess however. Enthusiastic and good-humored instructor who is clearly enjoying himself. You'll also have to buy that CPS remote thing and pay another $13 to register it. What a scam that is.
this was a very good class. i didnt really read the book and got an A-, but i did go to every single class. maybe if i read the book i would of got an A
Mark is a really excellent prof. with an obvious enthusiasm for his work. Amusing, clever, helpful, and occasionally rude, his class was the most interesting one I took my freshman year and I would gladly take another course taught by him. Contrary to what some people have said, I felt that the book the was good supplement to the class.
i really didn't enjoy this class. the way examinations and quizzes are given via cps and multiple-choice is not really the best way for everyone to learn, so it was irritating (and expensive) that there were no other options. while some folks seem to enjoy mark's communication style, i found it to be rather patronizing. would not take him again.
Mark is a pretty crazy guy. He likes to say crap, walk around with no shoes and make jokes about drinking is class. However, he is really focused and gets the material across well. He gives daily quizzes of 5-10 questions on a keypad remote. If most of the people get a question wrong, he asks it again later and he uses them on the test. Real easy
Very good class! I wasn't very interested in the subject, but Mark made it fun! Very clear, and if you study a little, you'll do great on this class.
You have to go every day and you have to read the book, otherwise a C will be a lucky grade. He keeps class somewhat interesting because he has a good personality but really there is just to much information to absorb without a lot of notes and careful reading. When questions are asked of him pertaining to administrative matters he is absolutely n
HIGHLY RECOMMEND MARK!!!!! there are about 10 quiz questions a day but he encourages you ask your neighbor for the right answer. he wants you to do well. there are three tests and 75% of it is made from quiz questions from in class or practice ones online. hes incredibly funny and i would hate the class if it wasnt him.
he is a nice funny guy but the multiple choice questions are tricky very easy to pass not easy to get an A
This class was alright, but I felt like we didnt cover that much material. He showed about 6 movies this semester, when he could have been lecturing. You have to buy a remote for his class, which is about 30 dollars total. There are questions every day, and that is how you take the tests too. Study from the text website.
Actually, I really liked this class. There isn't a curve though. You have to go to class everyday to get points and pass the class. Overall, mark is a very good professor and i would recommend this class to anyone.
must attend class everyday. He gives in class quizes daily.
Great class. Four papers only, but you are well prepared for them. A very stimulating instructor!!! Great to have, would definitly take him again!!
Excellent lecturer; very dynamic and interesting, as well as knowledgeable. There are daily class quizzes, but he gave out more points than the total for the class, so it was easy to make up a few missed days (i.e 330 points available, but the final grade was calculated out of 300). Overall, one of the best introductory classes I've ever taken.
quizies every day but not that hard
greattttt teacher. makes everything (even the boring stuff) really easy to understand. lots of anatomy and big scientific words. must come to class to get points for answering questions, but that is totally up to the student. highly recommend this prof.
Mark Griffin is a really good instructor. He has a good sense of humor and is very knowledgeable. My only complaint is that for me personally, I don't learn as well in an impersonal lecture environment. The class was difficult, but interesting. I would take Mark's class again, as long as it were smaller!
He knows what he's teaching. It's an awesome class, one you actually look forward to coming to.
must go to class to pass the course, daily quizzes given on little CPS remote. very inpersonal class, no individual attention. difficult tests, but if you attend the class and know the quiz questions he uses most of them on the tests, however you still need to study other material: notes and book in order to pass the tests.
What ever you do dont take this class you're just another number, its big and impersonal the whole class is spent with him talking at you as far as grades: 3 tests (50 points each) and the rest is clicker in the end the clicker questions are worth more than the tests the down side is that i doubt you'll ever get full points on any clicker quizzes.
Frustrating teacher. did not help at all when my clicker failed to work for the first two weeks of class, and did not allow any make-up assignments. He does have a bit of humor, but overall i did not like the class because of the difficulty and dull lectures.
AMAZING CLASS! he loves what hes taeching so he makes you WANT TO LEARN! the class is difficult however it is sooo worth it! griffin rocks!
I really enjoyed going to class because you learn very interesting things through out the semester. Only down point is the clickers..you use them everyday and if you forget it you can't make it up. Three test alll 50 multipul choice questions taken with your CPS remote.
He knows what he is teaching and is a very interesting teacher. It just sucks that your grades are based 100% on clicker quizes and tests. Make sure you go to every class if you want to pass. He won't help you outside of class, so study. Interesting class though.
needs to offer more assignments because the exams are weighed too heavy.
He is a great teacher. He knows his stuff. He is funny and makes the keeps the material interesting/entertaining. I recomend him for this course.
Great teacher!!! He kept the material interesting and fun. I highly recommend taking him.
He's a rad teacher to be honest. Attendance is mandatory which is why i received a C-. Although my grade is nothing to show for, i really enjoyed his class. Seriously didnt open the textbook once. probably another reason why i got a low grade. Basically, you can at least past if you do noting but show up to the lectures and take the tests.
best class i've had so far. great great great teacher. He keeps you interested the whole way through. make sure to study the in class quzzies for the exams and read! he won't remind you, so stay on top of everything.
Griffin made this class way more interesting than it should have been.
great teacher! made me consider this for a major.
I was not pleased with this course at all. Just before the final, I asked the teacher to speak to me about my grade he said that it was just too bad and that he couldnt help me. Later I found out he had given a handful of students information that the final was extra credit, which gave them a comfort level much greater than my own. I was appalled.
Mandatory to attend whole class each session, but if you pay attention its very interesting and not hard at all to pass the class; plus, zero homework assignments.
Mark is a great professor that gets students excited about Anthropology. Very fun! Study the quizzes he gives in class and the multiple choice quizzes on the text book website.
Very condescending. Seems to make up the material. Do not recommend.
The class was very fun and extremely informative. He's actually hot, too.
This is the most helpull anthropology class you will ever have!
Anth 302 is one the highest recommendations that I can make. Some people graduate college with almost no knowledge, but after this course, you're gonna know a lot. Minimum writing for this class is 80 pages (20 x 4). Very important: Don't miss lectures. SFSU would benefit if they had more professors of this calibur.
He gives very clear, concise lectures and seems to love what he teaches. This was the second class of his that I have taken and both were truely enjoyable.
Obviously been teaching for longtime; Very mechanica. Lazy on testing and papers. I wouldn't take another class from him
I learned a lot about the subject, plus an immense amount of trivial pursuit knowledge. Keeping up with the reading and attending class is inexpressibly important – I missed one lecture and the following paper was based on a good deal of what we went over that day. He is incredibly smart but is relaxed and funny.
you need to attend class! this was actually the only class that i really looked forward to going to. if you are into biological anthro you'll love it. your grade is determined on 4 critical essays that are based on the material covered in lecture, so as long as you mention everything he's covered, you'll do fine.
Well organized, knowledgeable and entertaining professor. I loved the fact that he makes this a class founded on critical-thinking, which is a skill very lacking in this world. Be prepared to write many words and demonstrate that your brain is logically interacting with the course material.
This class was amazing!! I took it my freshman year and was THE best course I took last semester. There are 4 essays due through out the year that are a minimum of about 15 pages each, if you want to do well on it. They were great for making sense of the lecture notes and overall understanding. He knows what hes talking about, super interesting!
i loved this teacher and i really enjoyed the class though it was challenging. griffin makes the material really fun and easy to get through
Mark is an Amazing professor, he has a way of teaching that makes everyone remember even the dullest stuff. He is amusing and quite intelligent. You must go to class to pass his class, but you'll enjoy class. He doesn't grade on a curve, he expects you to be a serious college student. You will do well if you kick your ass. It will be worthwhile!
Good teacher but hard tests and quizes make sure you know the material so you can keep up.
Three big critical thinking papers. They are designed to help you take all of the information you've learned and sort it out and figure it out what it means for yourself, and it actually WORKS! Don't take this class if you don't plan on attending, or if you don't plan on working hard and taking good notes.
If you don't want to come to class, don't take this one. Attendance is a huge part of the grade. Reading is also a must for the daily quiz questions. The subject matter of the class is tough to get through if you're not interested.
The material is very interesting. Although the 3 exams are 50 mult choice and are EXTREMELY hard and tricky!! I had to withdraw from the class bc I was going to fail. attendance mandatory bc you have 5 question quizzes everyday from the reading.
The subject matter was fascinating, however I was frustrated I didn't do better since I attended class everyday and read the book. Some of the material in his daily quizzes seemed like trick questions. Overall, interesting, but not an easy A.
Great guy, GREAT lectures/presentations. You just listen and look at the powerpoint he puts up and take notes and you will learn a lot. Also, read the textbook, but there isn't too much reading. And he only covers the basics, so you don't have to understand everything in the book. He is also very helpful and friendly.
The material is interesting and he teaches it well, but the fact that the class is based entirely on tests and quizzes sucks. I attended class every day, kept up on reading, and thought I really understood the material, but I'm not even sure if I'm going to pass. Theres no curves either...
Fossil Humans Practicum: 3 papers, 5 practicals, 5 Lab Assignments, Pay attention. This is your grade. Advice to do well in this class: take pictures, ask questions when things are confusing, handle skulls with care. Instructor: Highly Recommended for Anthropology majors wanting emphasis in Physical Anthropology, Take him for everything you can.
Very easy to receive a C, very hard to receive an A.If you want to earn an A you must take excellent notes, record the lecture (re listen to it), read the book, do the problems in the book and study problems from the previous day.In order to earn a C, simply attend every class and take good notes. Subject isnt hard, class structure could use work.
this class took alot of energy, yet i got little out of any of the material. there are these questions asked throughout the lectures to ensure attendance, they are not that easy and you watch your grade slowly deteriorate. i took it cr no cr and passed easily, interesting man teaching, the material is too basic for him
Professor mark griffin is an awesome teacher, i took his intro bio anthro class. MOST IMPORTANT: ATTEND CLASS: class was made up of 3 exams and quizzes in the beginning and end of class. his exams were moderate, and most of the answers in the exams are found in his lectures. take good notes from his slides. this was a class i was excited to go to.
really good prof. lots of lecture, not much class discussion.
this was a great class. very fun but challenging. i think if there was one suggestion i'd make to Mark it would be to be a bit more open during his office hours. he can be a bit intimadating. over all one of my faviorite teachers and one of my fav classes.
I really enjoyed the class and walked out having had a broader understanding of the subject. Dr. Griffin throws A LOT of information at you and expects critical thinking, not regurgitation; that's fine with me, I'm in college to sharpen the contents of the 'bucket' if ya know what I mean. I recommend him unreservedly.
This class was alright. Grading policies are not clearly defined and the instructor is not helpful. I attended every lecture (not including a medical emergency). He allowed me to make up partial points and offered no other help. If you want to be be in the darka dn enjoy anthropology this is the calss for you otherwise stay away!
You have to go to class every day to pass the class because there is a quiz every day. The class is very interesting and you learn a lot. I loved the class but the quiz's gets annoying.
This class is easy if you follow the instructions right from the outset. You do need to study the quiz questions and the chapter questions (different) to do well on the tests. He's funny and cute and easy to pay attention too. So that's good. You do need to at least skim the book to pass the tests.
I seriously was very skeptical about taking his class because it was 4 hours a day, twice a week with continuous quizzes through out the week. But im so glad that i did! He is a fantastic teacher...he makes me want to change my major to anthropology. I thought i was going to get a C but i got an A
he's basically a really awesome guy. He takes all of his exam questions from the online quizzes available for the book and the questions he gives you in class. Nothing is weighted, it's all based on the book (u don't really need the reading) and the clas questions. SO just make sure to go to class and take the book quizzes
i really enjoyed this class. it was really interesting and he's pretty easy to pay attention to. only sucky thing is you have to go EVERDAY because you take quizes everyday. the tests are kind hard but just study really well and you'll be fine. i recommend him as a teacher.
Excellent teacher! Attendance mandatory (quizzes everyday). Tests are mildly difficult. Lectures are VERY interesting and informative. I'm really glad I'm taking this class. Mark is really funny and keeps you engaged.
This class is really challenging. You have to read your text out of class and go online to get questions to study from two different websites. Its near impossible to get an A. I am a good student, but i dont think i am going to pass this class. The teacher is enjoyable in class, but overall its really challenging ¬ recommended for a freshman
This course is a great GE course, as well as a requirement for the Anthro major. Mark is a wonderful professor, who through his enthusiasm for the subject he teaches, made me change my major to anthropology. While the class is structured for mandatory attendance, you will want to come.
He rarely tells you anything that isn't of some use to you, so take good notes. Quizzes are daily and are taken straight from his lectures or videos. Tests consist of those quizzes and from the textbook site. The Class revolves around this remote that you need to purchase. It is mandatory. Overall, really interesting class.
Very good lecturer, bringing a computer helps during the lecture, since a lot of the material he discusses, rather than writes it in the powerpoint. Attendance is mandatory, since there is questions at the beginning and end of class (by remote). The tests are somewhat challenging, just STUDY.
I did not expect this but this class is very difficult. The teacher is nice and interesting but for some reason I can not pass the tests. Paying attention in class does not really help and he formats the test in a weird way. I am a very good student but I do not believe I will be passing this class.
This is an amazing class. The subject matter is interesting and the professor never bores you with information you don't need to know. Lectures and some book material ends up on daily clicker quizzes and the three exams. As long as you do some studying and pay attention, it's not too hard. Attendance is a must for those quizzes.
You must go to class everyday because you have quizzes before and after class. You can talk to the people around you for the quizzes but not for the tests. You really need to study for the 3 exams. They are only 50 multiple choice but if you don't study a lot you will not pass. He is a total hippie and quite enthusiastic about teaching.
Very amusing and enthusiastic. His lectures are pretty clear and attendance is a must. Pay extra attention to the videos showin in class and expect to see them on the exams.
He is a great anthro proffessor, but he is very difficult. I'm an Anthro Major, pretty keen on biological anthro, and i still had trouble with his daily quizzes in his intro course! The final seems to be extra credit though, which he does not tell you about. Probably hardest course I've taken to date, but also very engaging.

He's tough but fair. The tests are really hard but he gives you lots of decent quiz questions to redeem bad test scores. Just go to class every single day! Skipping one cost me a letter grade because I was on the brink. Pretty interesting class but lots to memorize. If you like anthropology then take it! if not, pick another elective. Just trust me
I attended class every day, did everything asked. Took notes every second I could and still found the exams very difficult. Not a fan of the remotes, or what I felt were exams that asked questions that hadn't exactly been address in class. Griffin knows his stuff, I'm just happy to get out with a B.
Griffin is great teacher, if you listen to lecture and go to class everyday then it should be an easy A.
Lectured with passion and humor. Clear about requirements for assignments. Easy to reach outside of classroom.
Excellent teacher, keeps the students interested in the subject.
You don't have to go to class, but you really should to get the extra points and to learn what you can't get from the book. He's a pretty cool guy and makes it interesting if you're not easily distracted
I would say a quote from Griffin might sum up his classes, "It's like a woman's skirt... short enough to keep you interested, long enough to cover the subject." You're missing out if you choose another teacher just because you may have heard he is a challenge. Probably the best anthro teacher at sf state.
Just don't be intimidated!
Mark expects a lot from his students, and I appreciate that. He forced me out of my procrastinating ways, and for that I am thankful for him. If you think you can complete the critical thinking exercises the night before they're due, you will NOT PASS. Don't miss classes; lectures are critical if you want to do well on the writing exercises.
This class is hard. Quizzes everyday, you can talk to people in class about the answers too, so that helps. You can tell he is very into his lectures. Funny teacher. I just had a hard time with the tests, some tricky questions. You can't miss a day, or else it messes you up.
4 25 page papers. Solid amount of work but not very often.
Personally not my favorite subject, but Mark teaches it in such a way that it was moderately enjoyable. Expects you to be at his class, on time and ready. If you miss a day, make sure to get the notes from a friend. The papers seem bad, but I guarantee all papers short of 10 will seem like a breeze after writing for this class. Humorous wordage..
Mark is totally into anthropology and knows his stuff. Attendance is mandatory because there are daily (easy) quizzes. His exams are really difficult so be sure to do the reading and use his website to help you understand the dense readings. Mark is pretty funny and the class goes by fast.
Prof. Griffin teaches you a great deal about anthropology. Attendence is a must if you want to pass the class. Get there early and stay the whole class 50% of your grade comes from that. Tough class but it went by pretty fast and he is very understanding teacher.
Expect to write 60-75 pages, take 100 pages of notes, be there every class, and learn a ton. Mark is awesome. I'm more of a cultural anth. person, but his class was extremely interesting and comprehensive. Really knows his stuff and makes you want to know it too. Uses the most recent research in his notes. Lots of work, but not too hard if you try.
Good class. The information is pretty interesting and as long as you just show up for class and take the daily quizes you will do fine. Theres only 3 exams, I did horribly on 2 & good on 1 and still got a B+ just because i showed up for the quizes. Hes a good teacher who really knows what he's talking about. I recommend it to anyone
I really enjoyed this class and like Dr. Griffins teaching style. however this semester apparently I never got a grasp on what he wanted in the papers we wrote him. I spoke to him several times about this trying to clarify and got nowhere. I write very well, clearly we had a disconnect but I am not sure why.
mark's class was one of the hardest but most fulfilling classes i have taken in my 4 years at sfsu. he finds a way to make even the most boring of subjects (genetics) interesting to everyone. hes one of the best professors ive ever had.
He is extremely funny, a dry sense of humor but it makes the class fun yet at the same time he was able to keep everyone focused. He is also really good at making things very clear and making sure that everyone is one the same page.
If you come to all of the classes to answer on your pad and study a minimum for the exams, you'll get through this class easily because even if you answer wrong on a few questions, the teacher only evaluates you on 300, so the most questions you answer, better your grade.
Mark is a great teacher. He clearly loves what he teaches and his lectures are always interesting. Attendance is mandatory. If you don't take the quizzes you won't pass. For exams, revise the textbook questions online and past quiz questions. It should be reasonably easy if you do.
Complete lecture class, but griffin made it interesting. I had no previous knowledge of anthro but it ended up being m favorite class, which says a lot considering i usually hate sitting through lectures. I would highly recomend this teacher.
Mark is an excellent professor. Managed to hold my attention for all 4 hours (summer). Laid back, funny, kind person. Takes most of the test questions from the chapter quizes for the online text book and he will tell you so on the first day. The info is easy to follow as long as you show up and atleast read chapter summaries.
Probably one of the funniest teachers i had in a while. He doesn't make the test hard. The quizes are fun because you take them right after you learned the information.
Mark is a great teacher. He makes what could be a potentially boring subject very interesting and engaging. While the material itself does take some work to grasp, Mark makes this grasping as easy as possible. The best tip I can give is go to class, don't forget your remote, and pay attention to the lectures!
Mark Griffin is a great professor. He makes the class very interesting. Tip: remember your CPS remote.
AMAZING teacher! Made the subject very interesting. He also explained everything so that it was understandable. Very nice guy and very funny. Lectures were never boring. My favorite class of the semester.
I took him for Biological anthro. Tests, there were 2 midterm and final they were hard and attendance is mandatory, there are mini quizes everyday using a CPS clicker (the quizes are easy and based on the lecture that day.) His teaching style is clear and he makes class fun and interesting. Overall good class, just study hard for the midterm/final.
He is a great teacher. A remote is needed for this class to answer daily quiz questions which are open notes, so attendance is a must. There are two exams, which are not open note, you'll do well if you study. Reading the text book helps, you can read at your own pace.
He is a really good teacher. You can tell that he is passionate and very knowledgeable about what he is teaching. Technically, attendance is not mandatory but it really is because there are in class questions with a remote that contribute to your grade. Once in a while he shows videos, and I find them very interesting. Take his class!
The professor is pretty cool. I am going to honest and say that the first test that I took was pretty hard. You have to attend class. There is no exception. If you're lazy, or just don't like to read, this is not the class for you. This is the class for people who are highly organized. But the professor is pretty cool, he gives a lot of sarcastic c
over all a good professor, casually attempts to tel joke. some of them are actually a little funny. :)
I really enjoy coming to Mr. Griffin's classes. I feel like I am learning something, and I also really appreciate how he uses visual aids during his lectures.
He is a great teacher. He never gives homework, so no presentations. He just gives lectures in class. I'm not a science person, but I studied and got a B on the first test. He only gives two test throughout the semester that are 50 questions each. He gives a 5 question quiz everyday so attendance is MANDATORY! I loved this class and I learned a lot!
Interesting lectures, sometimes easy to fall asleep, uses visuals and sometimes movies. Interesting topics and teaches with a passion. Class is MANDATORY daily quizes make up 50% of grade other 50% is the final and midterm. He says study lectures but study your quizes and read the book. A good teacher, but i agree you must be ORGANIZED for the class
This prof is amazingly knowledgeable in everything he teaches. Definetely gives interesting lectures about subject matter that is actually relevant. This class was a bit of work but definetely worth it.
Professor griffin is awesome.. he is so passionate about his lectures. he is very organized. You use a remote in his class for attendence and quizzes. There are daily quizzes that are scary but really arent too bad..i would highly recommend taking him for any class!
He definitely leaves you to your own devices but is willing at the drop of a hat to help you out. He is the professor who inspired me to change from Cultural Anthropology to Biological, and I am so grateful for that. Classes are always super interesting even if it's not completely your "thing". GO TO CLASS and put in effort--he always does.
Great teacher, his class was very informative and made the topic even more interesting. You might have to try when you take tests but besides that its an incredible class.
Great professor. He has complete grasp of the subject and teaches material in a highly effective and engaging manner. Attendance is key. He tells you everything you need to know in the syllabus and course website offers great studying materials. Not the easiest class, but still a great class.
He is soft-spoken but hilariously sarcastic in class. It is better to sit up front in the lecture hall so you can hear him and also see the bones.
I enjoyed this class! I've never taken an anthropology class, and his intro to biological anthropology class is incredibly interesting and informative. No written homework just reading. you need to study for tests but that's it!
You HAVE to go to every class if you want a passing grade. He gives 5-question quizzes at the beginning AND end of every class. These points are worth 50% of your grade at the end of the semester, the other 50% are 2 tests. No homework. His lectures are really interesting and engaging at the same time. Go to class, read the book, get an A.
Good professor and good guy. He uses the clicker remotes to have quizzes at the beginning and the end of class, so attendance for the full time is mandatory. He shows really interesting movies that help with the understanding of the class. He also is VERY passionate about his subject. The class isn't hard, but the tests are a little difficult.
Awesome Professor! Every day quizzes so attendance is mandatory. The quizzes count for 50% of overall grade. They are repeated questions so make sure to study and take advantage of his online sites. I didn't use the textbook often and still got an A!
The class may seem more intimidating than it is. We have quizzes everyday, which are mostly easy, but he only takes 100 of the 150 pts we have from quizzes, so any points above 100 are extra credit. The tests were hard if you didn't study. A little arrogant, but kinda funny are pretty responsive and accomadting. I would take another of his classes
Prof. Griffin is a very good professor, his lectures are very engaging and his class structure is pretty cool. We have quizzes everyday and 2 exam. The quiz are easy but the exams are extremely difficult. I've never failed a class in college before but this might be the first, I'm on the borderline of passing and failing and im praying he passes me
This professor is good. He's very knowledgeable in the subject and he's easy to understand. Attending class is mandatory! The daily quizzes are a big part of the grade. There are 2 50-question exams; all multiple choice. He's a great teacher, very nice too. I recommend this professor for anyone who needs to take Anthropology!
Mark Griffin really knew his stuff and you can tell he's passionate about it. He's a great teacher that really makes you learn all about anthropolgy as much as possible given the amount of furloughs of the school. Just go to class and make sure to use the online resources.
I really enjoyed this class, this professor made the material very interesting and I am considering taking another anthropology class. If you can take this class!
I have never had a more challenging, fair, fascinating, or more effective professor in all my years at San Francisco State. You WILL know your stuff by the end of his courses.
Be prepared to work hard, 4 papers worth 25% of your grade each! Each was between 15-20 pages, my final was over 25 pages. Book and lectures make up the papers, so missing class isn't wise. Not an easy class by any means but interesting and you walk away with a sense that you learned something and earned your grade.
He is very knowledgeable in the subject at hand; however, his teaching style made it difficult for me to really grasp the concepts that he was trying to explain. I think more in-class activities and interaction with students would have helped a lot. Quizzes in the beginning and end of each class session and two exams.
This class is easy. Basically if you know the answers to class quizzes which help you learn the material in the class and you read the book although the reading is not required you will be fine. He is humorous and makes anthropology somehow interesting. I would just listen to the lecture and not take notes because the notes are all over the place.
Anth 531 was an incredibly challenging class so you have to put in a lot of extra time and effort into it. Mark is a really effective teacher and is very engaged in the subject. I had been way too intimidated to take any of his courses but I'm glad I did because I learned a ton.
Griffin is passionate about anthropology which makes the class interesting. You have to attend class because there are quizzes which are based on the lecture and the reading from the book. The points from the quizzes are a great way to get a good grade in this class. Also do the online quizzes to understand the material. He is also humorous.
This class is VERY well-organized and is really easy to follow. Mark has a way of putting complex ideas into a more understandable format; which is especially helpful in an intro class. Just show up to this class, pay attention to the quizzes, and there is no reason not to get a stellar grade. It's so interesting, there is no reason not to!
This class was a lot more difficult than I thought, but as hard as it was to get through the four response papers, I feel I have a much better grasp of the subject than others who took the class with another professor. If you go to class, take good notes and make good use out of his office hours, you will thrive in the class.
Mark is a brilliant professor. His classes are difficult, but his passion and knowledge extend far beyond any textbook. Be prepared to be in class, and to take extensive notes. Assignments are in depth and focus on critical thinking. Take Mark for as many classes as you can!
Great, effective teaching style. The writing assignments were tough but very helpful. The subject matter is really hard but the professor is approachable and answers email promptly. Loved the class.
great teacher. kept my interest the entire semester. he was organized, helpful, and funny.
Excellent lecturer, funny, engaging. Very knowledgeable! Assignments are grueling especially if Bio Anthro is not your major. Attendance a must because notes from class are basis of papers along with book as supplement. I learned a lot and gained a better understanding of the subject.
Class is essentially not that hard, but the volume of material can become overwhelming if you dont study on a daily basis. The daily quizzes are an interesting way to keep information fresh, and mark himself is a funny, well educated, social guy. I highly recommend the class for anyone who needs to fill a bio req.
Took this as a summer course. Mark is difficult to approach and is slow to return emails. Tests are specific, notes and study guide are not consistant with content of test. Questions/answers do not always match. Be prepared to teach yourself. Quizzes on the textbook website are helpful.
So uh..what grade do you all get? He's so a great teacher and yada yada? Can't believe I ended up with a C after all the hard work I put in. I really think the amount of online work guarantees a failure or two. You can't even really go back and see what you put! Horrible. Going to try again with a new teacher to raise my now bombing gpa.
Do not bother to take him unless you are planning to get a master of arts in biological anth. You know the class is going to be bad when he say at the beginning that you need to be converse with the information. A fairly large group went to talk to him after one class because they had all failed the second exam.
Such an easy class! Just got to EVERY class do well on the daily quizzes and you will be fine. I never missed a class and always had my clicker, miserably failed both the midterm and final but ended with an A...take the class!
Knows his stuff but has a huge chip on his shoulder. One student said,"I feel like I'm in boot camp," many students too afraid to ask any questions of him about the information we're learning or protocol of writing up lab reports. Moody and takes it out on students. He is very much like a drill Sargent.
Mark is a difficult person to deal with. Exceptionally high expectations of students,i.e. paper due and test on same day, and not very helpful on explaining lab assignments on which the papers are based on. Seems to cultivate an intimidating, unapproachable air, one must be careful of what questions one asks.
Difficult person to be around. Seems to cultivate an unapproachable, and intimidating manner. Unhelpful, discourages questions. Tests occur while papers are due on same date.
This guy IS difficult to deal with. He is anything but clear in his assignment instructions, doesn't answer emails, has a vague grading system, and appears not to give a #$&% about his students. Sometimes I think he is trying to teach us to learn on our own, but more often than not I'm pretty sure he just can't be bothered.
I'm an anthropology major, so I can't help but be super interested in the material presented within the course. And it is a good course, he presents the material in an interesting way and his lectures are easy to follow. However, we use clickers making the tests impossible no matter how hard you study and he is very unhelpful regarding questions.
Expects a great deal from his students, but not of himself. Prickly personality, an understatement. Rushes through lectures. Seems to enjoy being obstructive to student success. Even excellent students are treated poorly. Makes completing Papers while successfully studying for tests difficult.Does not grade and return papers in a manner.
Expects a great deal from his students, but not of himself. Prickly personality, an understatement. Rushes through lectures. Seems to enjoy being obstructive to student success. Even excellent students - treated poorly. Makes completing Papers while successfully studying for tests difficult.Does not grade and return papers in a timely manner.
I am taking a very low level GE class and he makes it ridiculously hard. He expects too much of his students in a class that is just meant as a GE. He makes his exams EXTREMELY hard and most of the material on the exam isn't even covered in class. He doesn't prepare his students very well at all.
The class is really interesting and Professor Griffin is one of the most knowledgeable teachers I have had. I wish the in-class quizzes worked more often, as I think the inconsistency could have cost me an A. But the subject is really interesting and the lectures are quite good. If you're willing to study a bit more than usual I recommend the class
I don't know why I wrote ANTH 140, I meant 100
Said named instructor gives tests with questions of spurrious nature, neither originating from the textbook or lecture; marginal test and daily quiz scores are common. Many of said named instructor's quiz and test questions are "this instructor thinks" tied to the opinions of others, and the science/objectivity of much course material is dubio
Interesting class, with interesting lectures. Grading wasn't very good, though. Based on daily quizzes and 3 exams. Exams were random and didn't pertain to the lectures or book much of the time. General consensus in my class that the exams were ridiculous, especially for a low level GE course. Not impossible to pass, but impossible to get an A.
This was my favorite class because it was SUPER interesting and he's the best lecturer I've ever had. However, I studied EXTREMELY hard for his exams, I read EVERYTHING, made flashcards, studied my excellent notes, and I still never got higher than a C on his exams. It's so unfair. I ended up getting a B, not too bad, but I definitely deserved an A
Very difficult class, but incredibly interesting. Basically you have to show up and take the quizzes every class otherwise you have no hope in passing. Clickers didn't always record my answers, which was frustrating. Also seems impossible to get an A on the exams. Thought I had failed and ended up with a B. Overall a good class.
This was a great class. Although he is very sassy, Griffin is a fantastic lecturer and kept me interested in every class period. Don't be put off by his attitude, he is actually very nice and approachable. I hated him at first but once you talk to him you realize he's very nice and extremely smart. study clicker q's and mc's from textbook website
When he teaches, it seems interesting and I got a lot out of the lectures. Then the quizzes came around and I knew nothing. Even after reading the textbook and studying my notes and previous quiz questions. It seems like he tries to trick you and there is no homework so it is very hard to get a good grade.
My favorite professor this semester! Lots of writing, but you actually learn the material. Only take this class if you have interest in the subject. If you have interest, Mark is a great resource. He knows his stuff. He seems intimidating in the beginning, but opens up as the semester progresses. Recommended.
The class was really interesting and you will learn a lot. Griffin was organized and definitely knew what he was talking about. I'm also pretty sure he grades on a steep curve, because i got c's on the last two tests and somehow got an a in the class. However, attendance is MANDATORY and the daily quizzes are intense.
Like the subject, but not the teacher. I will never take him again.
Oi! Evil Mark is what I called him all semester. It's true he will trick you alot, I don't know why..The papers are agonizingly boring and he'll give you these prompts, but all he really wants is for you to regurgitate the notes in the form of a very long, boring paper. He also likes to take pts. off for stupid things, like making a tiny mistake on
This whole class is done with a clicker. No writing component at all, which makes it difficult to save grade. The exams were painfully hard. I studied so much and made flashcards but always got terrible scores. The class was interesting- the exams were what killed it for me.
One of my favorite classes of the semester. There is a lot of info given and he is open to questions. If your not interested in the topic do not take this class. Also I don't know what everyone is complaining about, he is very easy to talk to and it is important to ask him questions to make sure you are in the right direction for the papers.
Very Intelligent and explainations are generally very clear and understandable, for the most part. Very conversational and easy going guy who deffinitely knows his stuff. I just hope I can do well in his class.
Mark is an outstanding professor. He can lecture clearly and keeps the class engaged. He is more than willing to help you figure out how to do well in the class if you meet with him during his office hours. His office is sick too. He won't take any bull though, so you fosho have to do your part to pass.
So here's the thing with Proff Griffin, he's one of the most professional and just all around great lecturers ive ever been taught by, BUT your entire class grade is decided by DIFFICULT clicker questions every class period. This is not an easy class but you'll learn a lot .
This class is really cool but he's test are crazy HARD!!! He uses a clicker everyday and for exams. You have to figure out your own score. You have to study like crazy for his exams and you still may not pass. His lectures are good but teach you nothing of whats on the test. Be Warned!!!!!
The entire grade was using a clicker and tests. hard to get a good grade if you aren't a genius test taker. clicker questions are impossible. he is willing to help but doesn't make saving your grade possible.
Very interesting lecturer. In order to pass this class, you need to be conversational in the chapters in the text, through lecture notes, and the online resources. Very hard to do well, avoid if class is being considered only for GE requirements. Mandatory attendance.
He was probably the best lecturer I had this semester. He is crystal clear and the material i extremely interesting. as for the tests, yes they are difficult as they are based on all aspects of the course: Notes, Lecture, and the Book. A cause for much of the difficulty may be the fact that people don't read the associated chapters in the book.
Alright so the deal with this teacher is you HAVE to pay attention. He is an immaculate lecturer, one of the best I've ever had. However, his tests and in-class quizzes are questions sometimes better left too his own mind. The class is difficult but interest in this fascinating subject and his willingness to teach reaches out to me. Wonderful Class
I love anthro, but hated his class. Lectures are incomprehensible, and the notes are useless. His slides are useless as well. It's nearly impossible to do well on the exams, even if you ace the daily quizzes. Tested us on material that he hadn't lectured on on more than one occasion. Horrible, I wouldn't advise anyone take his class.
Dr. Griffin is one of the most interesting and helpful teachers in the Anthro department. His lectures are fun and he was willing to walk me through every single essay assignment. I highly recommend taking his class.
Griffin is one of the worst professors I have had. His class is based off of daily quizzes taken by a CPS clicker and a few tests. The class can help each other on quizzes but the tests are difficult. He puts questions on the tests that we never went over.
He's a very good professor, very knowledgeable and passionate about his subject. However, I wish his class would employ more critical thinking and be more interactive, rather than daily quizzes using a clicker. Do not taken him, unless you want your grade to be based on the repetitive quizzes.
He's very knowledgeable and his lectures are interesting. Clicker quizzes every class and exams are on the clicker as well. Since the majority of points come from the quizzes it is a somewhat difficult class, but as long as you pay attention to lectures and do the quizzes that go with the textbook it is possible to get a good grade.
Just pay attention to his lectures, take notes, read your sections, and for midterms take the textbook multiple choice tests online and you will pass easily :)
THIZZ CAT IS SMART AND YOU WILL LEARN A LOT FROM HIM... AND HIS CLASS IS ALSO VERY INTERESTING AND ENTERTAINING
Don't take this class unless you're REALLY good at taking lecture notes/quizzes/tests. You need to study his website resources consistently to do well on tests. There are clicker quizzes everyday. If your consistent with the quizzes you can bomb 2 of the 3 tests (no acc final) and still pass with a C. He's not really helpful but hes knowledgeable
To get an A in the class it is suggested if you read the book, but skimming is fine. The most important thing to do is go to his website and do the multiple choice questions prior to the quizzes. It is like 10-15 questions each chapter. just memorize those questions, pay attention in class (take good notes) and then skim the book, read if you can!
He is annoying and unhelpful. Quizzes every single day, in this regard it would have been better if this class had been a once a week class instead of 3 days a week. Some other people are fine with putting alot of effort into a Ge intro class just to come out with a passing grade.
His class is pretty straightforward. Yes, there will be mini quizzes on the clicker everyday. Those quizzes add up but you can use your notes and get help from friends. Two midterms using the clicker and no final. The textbook is recommended because his midterms will have material from the textbook.
Best teacher on campus - also the hardest. Dr. Griffin will treat you like a college student who is prepared to learn and produce. You will learn so much from this talented and brilliant man. Take all of his classes that you can get into.
Interesting subject! The professor is very knowledgeable and lectures are comprehensible even if you know nothing about the material, just pay attention. However, you either know/learn the material or you don't - like survival of the fittest. Passing = A+ Knowledge = Live.
You will be in the lab outside of class time to finish his assignments, but they're very informative and fun if you work in groups, which you will. Mark will start off cold and not even bother learning your name until further into the semester. Afterwards he's very approachable, and a very good professor. Hard, but fair grader. Highly recommended.
this class gave me the most stress this semester of college. i was paranoid because i kept getting the clicker Q's wrong. changed my game and studied my note every SINGLE day and read the book as often as i can. i gradually did better on the clicker tests and passed all the 3 midterms. i thought i was getn a C but got an A- instead. GREAT TEACHER
Mark Griffin is one of the best profs on campus. The only reason he was probably ever given poor ratings is because those students didn't apply themselves. I highly recommend him, he will challenge you to extents you never thought possible. If you really want to become an osteologist, Mark is where you should start!!!
He's really clear in the syllabus. Clicker quiz everyday beginning of class and at the end of class,No HW, 3 Exams. easy to get a C if you go to class everyday n take notes for the exam dont even buy the textbook. Alright class recommended for a easy C. Sucks coz u gotta buy a 20$ pulse clicker an 12$ to register it online. He's boring but wut evs.
He is a terrible professor. I am a great student I have a 3.7 gpa. I got a C- in this class meeting with him and putting in extreme effort even though I went to class and took copious notes. Horrible class his tests are impossible. He puts questions on the test he never talked about.
This class is really hard. You take a 3 question quiz before class EVERY DAY using a clicker, and 2 more questions come at the end of lecture, so obviously attendance is mandatory. Luckily, his tests consist of the quiz questions so study those questions!! One thing that sucks is that he doesnt put his lectures online so take good notes.
I am a dedicated Anthro. major and can honestly say Griffin's exams left me shocked. Took perfect notes during lectures yet his exams contained material we NEVER spoke of in class/read in the book/studied online w/ study materials. Seriously saddened by this because I know Griffin is a smart guy. Would not recommend him due to his impossible exams.
I am a 4.0 student and this class ruined my GPA. Griffin is a great guy who is passionate about his subject but isn't the most qualified to translate it to students. His tests are ridiculous. They cover things we NEVER talked about. I pay attention in class, ask questions, and take notes. Didn't help! Avoid this class at all costs.
Mark Griffin is the most unhelpful professor I've ever had the misfortune of encountering. The class is difficult as is and Griffin NEVER gets back to you with answers to questions regarding assignments. Qualified in his field but should NOT be a professor. Avoid him.
this is an amazing professor! tough to like at first as he is sarcastic and won't learn your name if aren't always around. took him for 3 classes. would not recommend him in large lecture class, he won't know your name and wont be very helpful. in the higher classes like osteology he is really engaging, ask questions and he will be a great teacher
I looked forward to this class, since the day i signed up, and in the end i can't say that it was that bad. He is sort off nice and funny at times. Overall just go to class, read the book, buy the clicker do the questions, and take notes. All you need is to study what you write down, the clicker questions, and the online quizzes!
Mark is great! Sit in the front & you'll learn a lot more. He's funny and helpful if you have any questions. Study the clicker and online quizzes as those are what your tests are and you'll be fine. No cumulative final. 3 tests total and a clicker quiz every class. Didn't do the best and somehow got an A! Would recommend this class.
Clicker questions every day, so don't miss class. I recommend reading the text book and writing down the majority of things he says. The exams are based of clicker questions, study materials, and his lectures.
I can positively say that this was the best professor I ever took at SFSU. Excellent lecturer, funny, and knows what he's talking about. Best teaching style I've seen. I learned things that I will actually use in the future.
You have to be willing to come to class everyday and apply yourself. This was one of the best and HARDEST classes I've ever taken but I'm glad I did. Material is tough to grasp and professor dispenses a ton of information that it can be overwhelming. However--put in the effort and it'll be worthwhile.
This class is so hard but also so enjoyable. Mark is great and his passion for the subject is infectious. Very difficult getting through the 4 papers but with each one you learn to make sense of the lectures and reading which is the point. Would take again.
Mark was freaking awesome! The BEST anthropology professor at SFSU hands down. His lectures are informative, funny, and fascinating. You have to put in a TON of effort on the papers but its well worth it. He will go above and beyond to help you if you ask. Super great teacher and such a fun and eye opening class.
Lectures are interesting, but the test material does not match the chapters we were told to read. There are daily quiz questions with clickers, so go to class everyday if you want to pass! Don't take this class if you are looking for an easy A.
you have to know the information, but he gives it to you very clearly. I loved his biological anthropology class. He really knows what he is talking about because he is a biological anthropologist! He made this subject really interesting, which is why it seemed so easy to me. You need to go to class to take the quizzes to be able to pass
I really enjoyed taking human fossils with Mark. I learned so much and really enjoyed Mark's sense of humor. He assigns three semi-hard papers and is not super helpful during labs, so it isn't exactly the easiest class (a challenging class isn't bad once in a while, though). He's probably one of the best ANTH professors at SFSU. I recommend him!
You'll have two quizzes everyday 3-4 questions before class starts and 3-4 at the end of class. Attendance really matters because if you miss those quizzes your grade will drop There was nothing else in the grade book but the quizzes and 3 tests.
Fantastic teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed the class. I don't get the complaints about difficulty; all I did was show up and listen, and when the test was imminent I reviewed the online quizzes. If you need an easier class than this, I suggest checking out some of the nearby high schools.
Mark is such a good lecturer. His classes were really fascinating, ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. We have 3 questions at the beginning and end of the class, funny. His midterms are a little hard but you have to study and you will forsure pass. DONT SLACK OFF, that was my mistake.
If you are not a science major this class will be difficult for you. He doesn't explain the basics really well and expects you to already know them. Not to mention you HAVE to go to every class if you want a good grade (clicker ?). I'm usually pretty good at science, but I barely got a B. You definitely have to work for your grade.
Funny guy, has a very clear grading criteria. 3 exams, worth 50%, plus final. No make-ups. Daily five-question quizzes at beginning and end w clicker so attendance is mandatory. Not a hard class, lectures can be a lil boring but he covers everything he'll test. Textbook is recommended but doable w/o if you listen. Pretty firm w his grading policy.
Great teacher, but prepare for lots of trick questions that will bring down your grade. I liked him and the class, but my anxiety got the best of me and I had to drop out. Don't be afraid to talk to him like I was.
I took Mark's class last minute for a specific requirement, but I'm glad I did. His lectures are fascinating, and he knows how to keep students engaged even when the material has the potential to be boring. He expects a lot from his you, but you will want to live up to those expectations. Fair grader, funny, best teacher Ive had at SF State.
He is a passionate teacher who really cares about Anthropology. The class is chalked full of (super interesting) informational slides/lectures but he cracks jokes on a daily basis which really lightens the moods. There's a daily quiz everyday and just three exams the semester. I loved this class, it really got me intrested in the field of Anthro.
Mark is an excellent professor, and a hilarious one at that. The class itself is dense with information, so take careful notes. There is also 4 essays that all need extensive research and critical thought. If you don't understand the assignment or material, Mark is more than willing to help you out. I would recommend any of his classes.
This was the absolute worst class I have ever taken. I took it as a Freshmen, I went to every single class. I went to office hours, studied his website until I got As on all practice tests. Used the book and still barely got a C- I was crying everyday thinking that I would fail. Terrible class.
DO NOT TAKE FOR AN EASY A. The lectures are long, but interesting. Mark is quite entertaining. However, you will have 5 IClicker questions before and after class which are usually difficult (even with good notes) that makes up a LOT of your grade. Its hard to get anything above a C+ on the exams with a 23/30 bc he uses trick questions.
Mark is a great teacher, his passion for the topic is contagious. You NEED to attend class and take good notes and MOST IMPORTANTLY you need to go to his office hours! This is a tough class but Mark is riveting as well as hilarious.
DO NOT TAKE THIS FOR A GE. It's so not worth it. He gives questions during class that are hard to answer even with really good notes and on the tests, he'll rip out questions you've never seen before and word other questions difficultly. For a GE, it's not worth getting a C for.
This is a good class but very hard and all of your grade depends on the 5 exams you take online and then the daily clicker quizzes. Make sure you actually go to get the clicker credit and to listen to the lecture because you will be lost without notes. Also some of the clicker questions are based on the textbook but he never tells you what chapter.
This class isn't too hard but it can be hard to pass. You are only graded on 5 quizzes and attendance. His attendance is taken by an iclicker quiz that is split in half every class so you have to be there in the beginning of class and at the end. Not a good class if you aren't interested in the subject, its a boring lecture heavy session every time
He is an amazing lecturer and the course is really interesting. However he uses clicker questions as 50% of the grade so attendance is really important. He also has some pretty difficult exam quizzes but if you write down the clicker questions you'll be good. He is a really generous grader at the end of the semester (he rounded my 70.3% to an A-)
Mark is one of the best professors I've had. Attendance not mandatory, but, there's a small quiz every class, uses iclicker for them. 5 tests throughout the semester, not cumulative. Even though he doesn't reference the book much there might be questions about it in the quiz so you should keep up with the reading. Have to work for a good grade.
Syllabus is very clear and he stuck to it all the way. Great lecturer. However, was hard to tell when new chapters/units were started. But approachable, so you can always clarify. Can come off a little intense sometimes. But, overall just a great guy. Stay on top of your readings and you'll be fine. All exams online and open notes which helped.
Really enjoyed Mr. Griffin and his lectures but the class was so so. I dont like the fact that he uses the iclicker to make attendance mandatory. Since its college who cares if you show up? Ok class and the course material is extremely interesting and fun to me however just minor things that I would tweak. As a professor great! As a class, so-so.
a lot of work for GE class
I will absolutely redact this review if the class gets any better, but if anyone is looking to sign up for this course (online, asynchronous) he has devised about 20 articles worth of non-class material that he is going to quiz you on- TO LET YOU STAY IN THE COURSE (before the course even starts.) He states you will be dropped if you don't complete
Asking him for help is like contacting an automated tech support line for Postmates. Quizzes are confusing and heavily weighed. Spends time talking about note taking techniques instead of covering the material. Takes zero responsibility for ensuring successful student outcomes. Disrespectful, belittling, and pretentious. Tone-deaf lectures on race.
A LOT OF WORK FOR A GE. if you are looking for an easy GE to pass. this is not the one you want. every week there are 4 quizzes and you have 5 exams for the entire class. I WOULDN'T recommend anyone taking his class.
Great class and great lectures but Griffin himself? Obnoxious. If you take this class, do your best so you don't need to email him. He will not be lenient and is overall condescending.
This class was asynchronous and it was very difficult to 'reorganize your notes" since most of the things he lectures and quizzes on are very vague and you have to study on your own to get that A. I would recommend making a group chat for the class to help each other out. Very prominent on students studying and keeping track of things on their own.
A LOT of work for a GE. Lectures are long & he goes on tangents. Often things he didnt even cover will be on the quizzes. Quizzes are only 3 questions but that means even if you get 1 wrong, youll get a bad grade. If you email him, get ready for a lecture on your iLearn activity and everything youre doing wrong. Not helpful when asking questions
Seems like a nice guy and he gives great advice on how to study the material for his class and other classes. But his quizzes/exams were a bit too much. There is a quiz after every lecture and 5 exams. Too much work for lower division GE. If you fear failure, I recommend taking a class at a community college to get it transferred over to SF State
terrible class, terrible professor, super interesting topic. All you do in this class is watch is incredibly monotone lectures every week that are basically a podcast because they have very little visual cues, and then take a quiz that has 3 questions on it, so if you miss one you get 50%. Not worth it!!!!
No doubt an expert in his field. In terms of teaching, he will provide you with over TWENTY resources not related to Anthro, will REQUIRE you to read them and TEST you on them. So get ready for that. Lectures are also really hard to follow because he sometimes deviates from the material to make a point that sometimes doesn't land.
Took online class for a requirement and if you don't pass or take the course preparation quiz, you'll get dropped by the 3rd week. I ended up failing but passed all the other present assignments & quizzes that were given. Watched all lectures just to get dropped. Worst class to ever start off with. All my freshies better not take this man's class.
Way too much work for a GE. You miss one quiz thats worth 3 points and you are walking a thin line
There's no doubt that he's an expert in his field. HOWEVER, being knowledgeable in a field doesn't mean they'll know how to teach it. Everything is asynchronous and already prepared in your class module. Your grade is based on a three-question quiz at the end of every lecture. Miss one and you're screwed. He won't help you. Not worth it for a GE.
Extremely difficult class, the 3 question quizzes are very hard and you can never review or see what you missed to learn from your mistake. I don’t think he actually wants his students to succeed, he insists learning styles DONT exist and uses that to justify not giving his students more resources
DON'T! Not worth the GE. I had to drop because he'll drop students for missing quizzes and if your aid relies on being full time, not worth it. Treats a 100 class like a Ph.D. dissertation. He's knowledgeable but the whole first week is just note-taking quizzes with 13 scholarly articles which is fine if you're a post-grad student, not undergrad.
Not worth it for a GE. It induces a lot of stress because if you miss one quiz you cannot take ANY OF THE OTHER ONES. Very knowledgeable in his field, yes, but he's better as a grad school professor, not for undergrad. He was very nice and able to get back very quickly if you did miss something or were sick and could not get the assignment done.
I took this class for a GE and had to withdraw because of how unrealistic and harsh this professor was. Save yourself and choose a different course. A GE should not be this difficult.
He assigns 2-3 quizzes and lectures at the beginning of the week (Mon-Wed) and 2-3 more lectures and quizzes at the end of the week (Thurs-Sat). Lectures are 20-45 minutes long and he can get repetitive and rambles on about unnecessary things. Material is hard to understand and you have to do lots of independent research to understand concepts.
Griffin unprofessionally spams students via email about deadlines before the course even starts. God forbid you have any other courses or a job. Lectures are SO boring & majority is unnecessary. Quizzes are hit or miss of 45 minute lecture material (5x a week!). Ridiculous for a GE course. If you don't already hate anth, def don't take this course.
Bruh, do not take this professor's class. Im telling yall, this guy will get you so mad. I missed a few quizzes due to family issues and I wasnt able to tell the professor that but still he shouldn't be this harsh on the grading. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. DONT TAKE THIS BALD HEADED TEACHERS CLASS.
Mark really cares about his ability as a teacher and it shows! Incredibly tough online tests. 100% you need to use critical thinking for every question, but all the quizzes are open note, open book. Even then, you'll need any and all EC to pass let alone get a good grade. I stayed after most classes to pick his brain and it helped a ton!
Avoid this professor's class if you can. The lectures are dull, quizzes are harsh, and attendance is mandatory. However, unstuckstudy AI could be a helpful study tool to get through the material. Overall, a tough GE course - take it only if necessary.
This man does not care if you're in the ER begging for your life. He will fail you over that one quiz. The way he speaks to students is condescending and belittling. Big power trip type of guy. If you're going through any health or mental health issues, this man may be one of ur last straws.
awful experience learning
This professor doesn't really tell you the relative materials about the quiz, which it makes you very hard to understand what the quiz will be. And his lecture talking is all non-relative stuffs, that tells you to take notes and you can't even use it on the quiz. Don't choose this class, your grade will be hurt so much.
There are good and bad things about this professor, but it seems as if the bad outweighs the good. For starters, he is extremely condescending and rude and on some sort of power trip. Second, this man does not care if you're literally dying; he will prevent you from completing any and all future assignments if you miss ONE. Do not take this class.
I would usually never leave a review but I simply cannot keep silent about this class. We are assigned at least 6 quizzes for the week to keep us on track. However, the questions on the quiz have no correlation at all to the class material. PLEASE do not pick this class if you dont want to waste your time
Do not waste your time with this professor. Save yourself.
DO NOT EVER waste your time with this professor. Gives multiple lectures and quizzes (4+) split up across the week which was awful because of my job. NOTHING IN THE LECTURES IS EVER ON THE QUIZZES! It didn't matter how hard I worked on the material because the quizzes are a bunch of random junk. Worst class I've taken at SFSU.
Steer clear from this class, he doesn't care about your grade. Lectures are an incredible waste of time when he mixes both from the textbook and his own lessons. Expects us to write notes on both as well. Tried to reach out and basically told me to get better at taking notes from his class. Professor has neglected this class for his other ones.
The worst gen ed class I've ever taken. 4 to 6 lectures every week with a minimum of 4 sometimes 5 quizzes that are timed 1 minute per question. So they are 5 questions from a 30-45 minute lecture and you only have 5 minutes to answer them. Think fast I guess. Good luck to anyone who takes this class. Absolutely terrible.
AVOID THIS CLASS AND TEACHER! Assigns about 4-7 lectures and quizzes a WEEK. Bro will have you take hella pages worth of notes from both the textbook and lectures, only for the quizzes to have nothing to do with the material at all. For people who have jobs, this course will just add more stress to your day.
The worst one I have ever taken. He has to study more to be a professor. Technically, he lacks awareness of the college environment. He is teaching "Intro to Anthropology," but he thinks like he is the most knowledgeable professor who is teaching for anthropologists. And actually, he couldn't tell how "not smart at all" he is. Don't take him ever.
Do not waste your time with him. He just kept rambling on about nothing important
Mr. Griffin, if you can read this. You're such a stuck-up prof who thinks you're God's gift to academia.
Quizes often have questions that have nothing to do with the current course material. Ending up in missed points for no reason.
if you have any option to not take his class, don't. he is a vile teacher who doesn't explain anything and just yaps for a few hours a week. he gives quizzes on things you don't learn until the following weeks and grades harshly when you get them wrong. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Half of the questions on his lecture quizzes dont correlate to the lectures, which he Posts 4-6 of each week (30min+ each), which means you will be getting points off of essentially every ~6 question quiz. Additionally, those quizzes are your only assignments which would be nice if they were fair.
Skip this class if you can. Lectures run 35-60 minutes, followed by quizzes with barely a minute per question. He expects you to use notes, but there's no time, and some questions come from older lectures. Answers are based on what he thinks is correct, not necessarily what actually is.
Try to avoid taking if possible. Made us buy an online textbook (about 50 dollars to buy) then took it off the curriculum. Lectures did not correlate with the quizzes. The quizzes are based off what HE thinks the answer is, not what it actually is. Lectures are 30-50 mins long with many personal anecdotes, about 6 lectures + 6 quizzes weekly.
If you wanna keep your sanity don't take him that's all I'm gonna say.
bruh this dude dont answer emails. class set up weird ash. whole class is just quizzes. lowkirkunely he horrible.
Dropped this class within the second week. No regrets. Roughly 5 questions per quiz, 6 quizzes a week, every week. To get an A hope to get at least 270/300 questions right. That's a room for error of 2/30 questions wrong a week. No retakes. The lectures feel entirely disconnected from the quizzes. The professor also has a high and mighty attitude.
His class was very hard to pass, I would say watch the lectures and pass the quizzes. the quiz grades make your actually grade. do not take this class if you can.
This teacher was extremely confrontational and rude especially to those who disagree with him. We actually had an incident where we had a disagreement via email so I came to class and ignored the issue and he kept trying to address it and make it seem as if I was an issue. I got frustrated and left the class after he kept hounding me to engage.
The grade for this class is solely based on the quizzes taken throughout the semester. Wish there were other assignments than the quizzes, as a lot of the questions asked in the quiz did not correlate with what was being said during the lectures. Seems easy at first then it all goes downhill lol. Def a learning experience, but wouldn't do it again.
Avoid this class. Almost the entire grade depends on weekly 4–6 question quizzes that often don't match the lectures. One attempt only, missed quizzes are automatic zeros, and grades are hidden. Lecture videos are long, the syllabus is rigid, emails go unanswered for weeks, and the professor seems disengaged and uninterested in students.
