Prof. Grimsley is an outstanding teacher who is very knowledgeable and animated. I learned a lot from his History of War class.
This guy is a great teacher. He says all kinds of nutty things to illustrate his points. My favorite was the Lothar of the hill people bit when we were studying Charlemagne.

grimsley is the best teacher ive had in over 3 years at osu. very animated, cares a lot about students, made fair tests that if you put any effort into, you got a good grade. lots of sweet audio/visual stuff too

Great Teacher!!! Best That I've Had At OSU. I Wish Every Teacher Was As Prepared And Dedicated To Education As Grimsley.
one of the top 3 profs i have ever had in all my years at OSU. puts more effort into his lesson plans than any teacher i have had. loves to illustrate historical points with films...very cool
Great lectures, good sense of humor. Likes to pick on the females.

Good speaker but not great lecturer
Very good teacher and very compassionate. The only knock is that he litters his lectures with implicit left-wing propaganda that many people get all too tired of hearing from liberal faculty.
Someone else said it best - this professor is very animated. Very non-traditional approach to teaching a GEC. Seems like a good guy.
good teacher, enjoyed class a lot
really intertaning in class
hey if you want a fun, charismatic teacher who never goads his inteligence over yours..take one of his classes. In a previous class, he opened the lecture in a huge hall, with dark lights Pink Floyd blasting. It was fabulous!
I loved his class- great lecturer- I recommend his class
Grimsley made me love History. I used to get physically ill just thinking about this subject. His lectures are very lively and interesting. Definitely my favorite teacher at OSU so far!
does not email students back. does not reconsider any opinions that arent his. but still an excellent lecturer. Our class gave him a standing ovation after the last session and he deserved it.
I took 682.01 & WW2 (team-taught w/Guilmartin) w/him. Great prof, animated & interesting, but demanding. I'm a history major w/a 3.8 maj. avg. If you work hard, he will respect you. If you no-show and don't study, you will not be "given" a good
Going out on a limb before I get the final grade, but so far he is excellent, caring, and a jokester who uses his enthusiastic illustrations (and background loud music) to make his points. He tries very hard to make a sad subject very interesting.
This man is my hero. If I wasn't so close to graduating, his class would have made me consider changing my major to history.
Definitely knows his subject well- GREAT lecturer, very animated-- dense material. This is not an easy class- you need to be there for every session. His tests are pretty difficult.
great lecturer - he knows his stuff and he speaks very well. lots of reading assignments (3 books, online sources), but its not so bad. i leave his class wanting to be a history major.
Very good teacher
A nice guy and all but I didn't learn too much in this class, but how can anyone expect to cover the History of war in 10 weeks? The exams aren't too bad, but make sure to write A LOT on the essays even though the instructions say not to. If you write a short essay you will get a poor grade.
Very nice and easy going guy. Had little trouble relating to students. Aided lectures by inserting film clips to visually demonstrate ideas. Midterm and final study sessions especially helpful. Is enthuastic about his work. Enjoyed going to class.
This is the most pompous jackass I have ever heard speak. Not only is he ultra-liberal, but he loves to hear himself speak too. If you don't memorize and regurgitate his views you will not do well on exams. He should be fired immediatly, as he is a disgrace to our university.

I think he's a very good teacher. He actually cares enough to come into an undergraduate level, non major class and give us a good lecture that doesn't just include memorizing bold faced words.
Good Prof. sometimes gets wayyyyyy off the subject

I think he has an amazing capability of getting students genuinely interested in the history of our country. He doesn't stress details, but instead emphasizes the relationship that the past has on our outlook today. He's so passionate about his work, also. This is one class I never want to miss.
He actually makes a big lecture interesting. You can tell that he truly cares and is so passionate about what he does. I'd say one of the best teachers I've had so far and I am a junior. I thought that he tried to encourage us to have our own views so I don't know where this other person is sayin
Great Professor, has a lot to say and is very helpful. Probably one of the best professors I have ever had at Ohio State. But at times he can seem as though he is freakin nuts!

Good prof who really knows what he's talking about. The only problem is that TA's grade our exams, which are bluebook, and I feel they grade way to hard for a 100-level survey course. Also, the prof does have trouble staying on topic, but I think it's because he's enthusiastic about what he's teachi
Enthusiastic professor that often goes off topic. class is easy if you read the book.
i think he's helpful. if you want someone who knows his stuff and doesnt teaches for a reason, then take this guy.
I rather have a lecture from Grimsley than the monotone "Clear Eyes" guys that teach physics and math. At least this guy is passionate, educated, and enthusiastic. Personally, I am more interested in learning about History now than ever before...and i think he's conservative, not liberal..
One of the best professors yet! Makes history very interesting and easy to learn. His passion for the subject is easily seen through his lectures; it is refreshing to still see some life left in professors these days. Honestly, this is my favorite class. (AND I HATE HISTORY!!!!)
How can you say he doesn't care about the individual. A girl asked a question in class one day, and he came back next class with tons of information for her. How many other teachers would take the time? His notes are easy to follow and I feel when he stays on topic well.
The class is not too difficult. But I do get a little agitated when he tries to lump students together as if we are all uneducated "mooches" of society. Also, don't diss him on this website. He gets off on it.
TA's grade way too hard on the essays, they seem to be getting in the way of what was a good impression of the class and teacher to me. Its a shame that much power is in the hands of TAs. I like Grimsley though, but he does get off topic.
Prof. Grimsley is passionate about his area, however, he seems to think everyone knows zilch about American history and politics. Also, to do well on exams, you need to be an extremely talented essay writer as an essay score is half of the points per exam. TA's grade essays way too hard-it's a GEC
The grading is absolutely ridiculous. I feel the test is not reflected of the study guide or notes and that the essays are graded WAY TOO HARD! If you have the main point that should be it- I mean come on you only give us 30 min!!! Some TAs grade harder than others. It just is not fair in anyway.
Prof. Grimsley is to excited about his subject - it interferes with the ability of students to actually learn. He also has chosen to grade a 100-level class in an inappropriate manner. He is not cognizent of the size of his class, and delegates too much responsibility to his TAs, re: grading.

Grimsley does a very poor job of teaching in general. Also, his arrogance is very disturbing. He treats his students as if they are all stupid, yet expects them to history scholars when it comes to the exams (that he doesn't even bother to grade himself).
An excellent professor, if the student is willing to listen and put forth their share of the work. He makes the class interesting and teaches history the way it was meant to be taught, if you talk to him one on one he is one of the most understanding professors you will ever have.

Grimey is quite the megalomaniac. He keeps a blog and referenced it frequently in class. Its amusing to read his references to the people who mentored him, which is admirable that he recognizes their assistance to him. Its unlikely that Grimey will overcome his selfish behavior to mentor undergrads.

There is a reason he has won teaching awards. He is a great professor. Yes, you have to study. Yes, you have to attend class. You have to pay attention and you have to be able to write coherent essays. It's obvious in reading the derogatory comments--with their copious grammatical and spelling errors--that those people just shouldn't be in college.
I had him last year and found that while he does a decent job of conveying the subject matter, he allows his own person opinions to color it too much. I got an A w/out too much trouble, however I was annoyed by the subtle way he'd try to inject his left-wing views into any and every topic of discussion. He's also comes off as being sort of arrogant

I love the assertive style... and the aloofness... makes me believe what you are saying. You can definately tell how much Prof. Grimsley LOVES and is absolutely passionate about history. That is what true teaching is.
.....
Great teacher. He keeps it interesting in lecture and the tests aren't that hard at all. He literally gives you the essay topics on the study guides he makes up before the exam. The reading is substantial, but not unmanageable at all. Overall, he might be the best professor I've had at OSU and I'd highly recommend taking a course from him.
Excellent lecturer. His powerpoints were a good guide to what he was speaking about. He is very willing to help students during the breaks and outside of class.
Kind of a crazy dude. Like, for real.
Took his History of WWII class.... This is NOT the way to teach. You do NOT simply rely on a documentary video for over half of the classes. A very, very History Channel-ish class. I've watched World At War... I don't need to spend the dough on a class just to get to see it on the big screen. That's all this class was. Not impressed.

If you're looking for a connection between religious fundamentalism in the 20th century and religion in the early part of the U.S's existence, you won't find it here, despite Grimsley's rather pathetic attempt to make the shoe fit. This guy had a fundamentalist preacher come in armed with propaganda that he presented as FACT. What class is this??
Does his part as a teacher. Genuinely wants the students to learn and understand. Talkative, interactive, works to hold attention of students. Makes boring lectures interesting, fun, and amusing. Tests fairly easy. Gives extra credit. Truly doesn't want the students to get a bad grade. Approachable, friendly, knows a great deal about history.
"Caveman to Al-Quaeda". History of War. Not American Revolution and U.S. Civil War, but ancient China, Greece, Egypt, and early caveman conflicts. Ancient warfare lectures always led to comparisons with current Iraq War, in that wars are still fought over needs, wants, money, religion. Ancient weapons and fighting philosophies were studied.
This class was okay except that he seemed totally disinterested in the students. Also, he brought in a envangelical preacher for one class the basically stood up there and showed aborted fetus amongst other things. I'm really suprised the ACLU wasn't knocking at his door. Pick someone else if you can.
This guy is great. He was a really fun teacher and extremely interested in his subject material. I would take another history class with him!
This class isn't hard, but it wasn't particularly interesting either. I was personally offended by several things that happened in the class (such as bringing in a preacher to "talk about seperation of powers" that mostly bashed gays, abortion rights and women). But the worst part of the class was that he was just not a very good teacher.
He is a bad teacher, stay away. He will make sure you have to come to class, but he will take days off all the time. some may like that I don't.
By far the worst teacher I have EVER had. GET over yourself Mark; stop telling us about your blog, or your time in the guard. Start teaching! Stop skipping class! If you’re going to take points away from your students for missing class, can you give us some for the 4 days (or 20% of the class you skipped)? I am happy to hear by the way OSU had the
Very good history teacher! Try to get into his class if you can.
hard to stomach.
Interesting class, warfare truly does differ between society's, tests are multiple choice and essay, mc can get really difficult since the text has a lot of info, and i mean a lot, essays or something relating to them are revealed before exams, can be easy, but difficult to bs TA's grade a bit unfairly (and won't give back your final after 5 emails)
Knows his subject and is not afraid of giving his opinions, but is very clear about the division between fact and his personal views. Take one of his classes-- you may just find it to be one of the better ones at OSU.
I took this class 3 years ago. We are still in the same way we were back then. Although now, however, I keep hearing the war is "over", and that we are only in the occupation. Funniest thing, but ppl still keep getting killed over there. Well, it's about time for this war to be over, so Professor Grimsley can say, "Well, guys, remember that ear
Amazing. He is an absolutely amazing lecturer!
Seems to genuinely care about teaching the class, i.e. he does not just read off of overheads and ramble on for two hours. Also. he uses media like power point and dvd clips to help enhance the class.
i really enjoyed going to this class. he always kept my attention and made his points clear. the tests were a little tough, but fair. he did get off topic occasionally, but mostly want pretty interesting and he definitely knows his stuff. i'd recommend him to anyone who wants a class that is difficult to sleep through and wants to actually learn.
I like his class, topic is boring but he is energetic. he has crazy policies, don't be late. but besides that its an ok history class.
Very energetic, has a serious passion for the subject and generally communicates clearly. Also, don't be late, he doesn't appriciate it much.
I was kind of skeptical after reading some of the comments here, but he's apparently improved since they were written. Lectures aren't terrible and the exams aren't too hard. Only thing that's bad about his class is there are 3 books including the textbook that need to be read, so you might be under stress if you've got some other hard classes.
This class was pretty interesting considering the material that had to be covered. He seems to love this time period especially the civil war. When he talked about James Buchanan he reminded me of Lewis Black (the comedian). The book really is not necessary b/c it does not necessarily cover what he does in lecture. However, buy the assigned novels.
Great Teacher! understand concepts, not spew facts. Go to class, notes not on Carmen. Textbook not necessary(if you go to class), but get the correct editions of the other books. Exams: MC, Fill in, Essays; prompt given beforehand, the rest is easy. Study Guides great. Really enjoyed the class. if you don’t care, don’t take, you'll just get angry.
I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He was very interested in teaching and lecture was enjoyable. No homework. Exams are fair.
fantastic teacher. he's energetic, fun to listen to, there were days that i was actually excited to go to his class because he is truly entertaining and you will learn a lot from him. i definitely recommend taking his class if you have the opportunity.
Powerpoints are often basic ideas of lectures, making you have to actually pay attention. Reading was practically useless, I got a B+ without ever opening half of the books. He is very passionate about the information, but sometimes gets off topic for a long time. Tests suck. Multiple choice are random info. and one miss is half a letter grade!
Loved the class! took a subject I've never really enjoyed and made it fun and interesting. Very animated lecturer and dedicated to what he does. Reading material is a little on the heavier side-but hey you're in college-keep up and it is likely you'll do well. Definately one of my favorite professors at OSU over the past 3 years. Learned alot!
Very informative and educational. Enjoyed his lectures and teaching style. A++
While he was a decent lecturer, able to speak well the whole class period, his class was still too boring for its subject matter Plus his tests suck, each fill in the blank question is 4% of your grade so if you forget one word, there goes your chance of getting an A because the TAs also grade the essays arbitrarily, docking you 5 pts for nothing.
Very enthusiastic in lecture, relatively dry and boring information made bearable through his interesting style of teaching. I actually enjoyed going to class!
Grimsley's class is filled with an overemphasis on bizarre illustrations, bizarre overemotional outbursts, and generally inappropriate behavior.
Grimsley is the kind of professor that makes you want to try that much harder just so that you don't let him down. The flair he brings to every lecture is inspiring. He certainly is not an easy professor; he expects alot out of his students. I highly recommend taking his course, (his WWII course is fascinating.) He is simply a great professor.
I really enjoyed the class. I do believe there is something wrong with the way the TA's grade in the course I took. I am unsure of why they are allowed to grade the way they do. Prof. Grimsley is very interesting and polished. Thumbs down for the TA's.
I am just about finished with his WW II course. Grimsley's a Civil War specialist who is hopelessly out of his depth in teaching WW II.
His quizzes are rather annoying but his history of WWII class was rather easy. I put in minimal work and received a B+
I have had him for two classes and he is a fantastic teacher... whoever typed he is a civil war specialist out of his league is retarded... for one hes a military historian and he was very knowlegable in ww11. I also agree that he was great but his ta;s suck... inconsistent grading and very hard to get a hold of
The only professor I have ever seen get a standing ovation at the conclusion of a course.
Excellent at lecturing and explaining. Vast knowledge of military historical subjects. Enjoys interacting with the students.
Good professor. Likes the students and the subject matter.
Great professor and great class. He really enjoys teaching, and he gets his points across very well. Basically, if you go to class, you're set to get a good grade. He does have some chauvinistic attitudes toward women in the class since it's Military History, but for the most part, he treats his students well and cares about their opinions.
Good lecturer overall, and a really nice guy to boot! Definitely knows his WWII history.
He is very good at lecturing and gives interesting new insights. Class is relatively easy, if you're a good writer you will make an A.
Pretty easy teacher, there were three exams that were all very wikapediable.
Really good guy and a fantastic professor. He keeps the lectures very interesting and is genuinely passionate about the subject.
This class is NOT about the History of War. It is a philosophy class with much of the debate centered on something called the warrior code Dont be deceived by "History Of War" when signing up for this class Yes Professor Grimsely is a personable guy and can be entertaining But if you actually want to learn about actual war history find another prof
Took grimsley for 2001 course. Such a cool professor. Really chill guy and he made lectures interesting. Your grade consists of three exams all of which are take home essays which is awesome. You have to read a couple of the course books to do the exams well though so be prepared to read two books. His classes are very manageable. take him if u can
I would agree with whoever said that you want to do well in this class just so you don't disappoint the guy. Each lecture is like a conversation with someone who is passionate and knows their stuff about history.
His class is incredibly boring but if you don't write down every word he says you will do terrible on exams. He looks for specific words in responses and if you don't include them you will do awful.
I loved this class! I went to almost every class even though attendance wasn't mandatory. He gives extra credit often - so definitely go to class! The in-class quizzes to go along with the written exams were based directly off of what he says in class. Exams aren't hard, but not super easy either. Definitely have to read 2 books, but they're quick!
Not a history of war class! Just Grimsley's philosophy on the warrior code and his personal life struggles. Doesn't matter if you understand the overall concepts of the class; you better know the tiny details and people he mentioned one time. Took this class to boost my GPA and it ended up doing the complete opposite.
Excellent professor.
Tough Grader. Really hard to pay attention in his class. He gets off topic a lot but really knows his information when he does talk about the lectures.
This is a great gen ed. Professor Grimsley is a good professor, I found his lecture very interesting and even looked forward to gong to his class. The only grades you will receive are the 3 exams (the final is not cumulative), which consist of a take-home essay and a short in-class mc/fill-in-the blank test. Class average was a B- on them.
Your grade will be comprised of 3 Exams, which are half take-home essay and half easy in-class MC/short answer. You will need textbooks but can get away with minimal reading. History majors, HIS CLASS WILL GREATLY IMPROVE YOUR HISTORICAL READING/WRITING ABILITY. also worth noting, I went on to take 3551 with him after how much I enjoyed 2550.
I found his class to be very interesting. Attendance to lecture isn't mandatory is not required but I highly recommend going. He tests mainly on the key words he gives at the beginning of class. Very test heavy, only 3 grades (2 midterms and a final). Only truly need to read for recitation and right before the midterm essay. Overall great teacher!
Prof. Grimsley cares about the subject he's teaching as well as his students. He cares less about the history you learn and more of the reason behind it. His essays are very open ended and allow you to choose a side and defend it. These and the exams are the only grades, but the exams are very easy if you study your lecture notes.
One of my favorite classes i have taken
Really great professor who genuinely cares about his students. I found his class to be very reading heavy and had a hard time staying caught up because of this, but I was still able to do well enough in the class. The material can be a little dry, but he's a great professor.
Professor Grimsley is an ideal professor. He truly cares about his students and their wellbeing. He is very passionate about the material, which makes the content even more interesting to the students. The course is content heavy, but as long as you watch or attend the lectures you can easily achieve an A+.
Professor Grimsley cares a lot about his students doing well, so over the semester he would make changes to the class format based on student feedback. You have several lectures every week, two short quizzes, and a discussion post. It's not hard, and he designed it so you can't put it off to the end of the week and procrastinate.
One of the best professors I have taken since I got here, He is an expert with countless years of experience in his field and tries to bring out the best in all his students. Is sometimes a hard grader but you will learn a ton in his class. Absolutely recommend.
His lectures are slow and boring. If they are prerecorded you can easily watch them at 2x speed and think they are normal speed. Overall, he made the content interesting and the class easy.
Do NOT take his classes, any of them. I've never done more work for a class and I'm a 25 y/o 4.0 student. He is mentally unstable and students bear the weight of that. He shouldn't be teaching. The people that left nice reviews had to have been bribed. He's SO DISORGANIZED and grades hard w/o feedback. He's also just rude. Insert profanity here.
Professor Grimsley was incredibly disorganized from the start. Week to week discussion posts and assignments are fairly interesting and very easy. The exams however are pretty damn difficult. CLASS IS NOT AN EASY A. Professor while VERY knowledgeable, inconsiderately fumbles his way though semester.
Not worth the trouble if taking as a Gen Ed. Class can be mildly interesting at times but the exams are pretty difficult. The prof is fine but as a ECE major I needed a gimme class and this is definitely not it.
Professor Grimsley was definitely not my favorite professor, but he was not bad. The class was pretty disorganized and I didn't really feel like I learned the most after completing the course. I found the class relatively easy, I just wish he put a little more effort into his lectures and his posts on canvas.
Professor is nice but babbles through HOURS of lecture, weekly quizzes, course long project, midterm and final, an just over all not the easy GE I was hopping for. I dropped the class after week 1 but I put more time into this class than any of my nursing classes. The slides had barely any words so no help on quizzes just not worth the time!!!!!
No extra credit, harsh grading,16-page study guide that didn't help on exams. Ridiculous from an associate professor in a 3000-level course. He unlocked quizzes/exams on weekends (Friday night/Saturday night at 5pm) due that Monday evening. A very intelligent prof who has a passion for history, just don't know if the passion is for teaching.
Crazy disorganized. It's clear he loves what he teaches but his lectures are just him slowly rambling, I can hardly process any of it. The weekly quizzes ask the most specific questions that have little to do with the actual importance of the course content, they feel like very clear "gotcha questions". Not to mention the unrelated PCA
The most disorganized prof ive ever had. Starts the semester off with every assignment as a 0, you have to work your way up, but then you never know what your actual grade in the course is at any given time. He has no idea how to navigate the carmen site and rambles through all his lectures. I want to jump through the screen to yell at him.
Although the exams can be challenging, the lectures are engaging and worth attending. Using resources like Unstuckstudy helped make the material more approachable. Overall, an interesting class with a fair workload.
Excellent. Creative. Gives good feedback. Interesting lectures. Writes books about subject matter in these courses.
Great. Expert. Knowledgeable. Caring. Folksy comments; all good. Don't try to correct him. He knows a lot of good things.
Great lectures. Memorable. Good examples. Keeps attention of group. Never boring.
