Haiman seemed like a nice guy, willing to help. His hw's were tough and quite long. He separated each assignment into exercises and problems, the former easier than the latter. His exams and grading policy were quite fair. Good speaker, legible writing.
While some may find him a little boring, Dr. Haiman teaches the material very well. True, he may go too in depth on subjects that will never show up on the exam, but he's really willing to help. Tests aren't too bad (definitely easier than the other two teachers) due to the 'cheat sheet' he allows.
teaches very well. His quizzes and midterms are very passable. I strongly recommend taking his class. He has a good sense of humor-- he is not obsessed with math like other professors.
Tests are fair, quizes are fair, and he is a nice guy. has a sense of humor and he explains things really well. doesnt go off on rables about confusing equations that we will never use instead proves the theorms we are using and are most important.
Awesome Awesome professor. I truly enjoyed learning in his class. I think he's one of the best profs. i've had at berkeley so far!
Great teacher!! He gave me a good handle on concepts that I superficially understood in high school. He is very clear and his tests are easy. be careful on tests because he doesn't like to give partial credit his GSI's had to convince him to give half credit. TAKE HIS CLASS FOR MATH 1A.
He is a great teacher! He explains concepts very well and speaks clearly. His midterms and quizes are easy if you study. He is the BEST math teacher I had so far, but he is too nice and does not have control over his class. His gsi's are great too. I would reccommend him over any other teacher!!!
Great professor, lectures are clear, quizzes and tests are pretty easy. Midterms and finals are easy if you just look at his practice tests--problems are usually similar. I recommend this professor for math1a-the GSI's are friendly and helpful as well!
Clear and concise. Fairly easy exams and quizzes. Take him for Math1A!
Very positive teacher; very passionate about math. Sometimes a little boring because goes over proofs in the book. Fair tests, quizzes.
positive, helpful, and overall nice guy. Haiman's class was probably the easiest out of all the math 1As this semster
Very good professor! You can't always make math fun, but he at least makes me want to learn it. Very passoinnate about math, and very smart. He loves questions and answering them, although not many are asked. Just seems like a nice guy all the time. Class is also easy compared to others.
Perfect class if you've had calculus in high school. He gives partial credit on quizes, midterms, and the final, and also curves the grades. I recieved an easy A without any type of tutoring, and I also missed almost every lecture towards the end of the year.
Excellent professor!!! Very clear, and easy!
Very nice professor, and good at explaining ^_^! He's a bit mellow, so must try hard to pay attention and not fall asleep. But he does explain everything well.
About 95% of this class is extremely easy if you've taken Calculus before. If you have taken it before you don't even need to go to the lectures. I would say it's an easy A but the final was actually pretty difficult and got me an A-
an AWESOME teacher. the material is so clear and straightforward. quizzes and exam problems are easier than book problems. Easy A if you do your hw and go to lectures!
Good, yet is too quiet
Awesome professor. As others have stated, he makes the course really easy. Go talk to him at office hours. He's a greath man.
very niiiiice teacher. i'd love to take all my math classes with him. fair tests.
He was a good teacher. He's super-nerdy and there are moments when he is hilarious. If you took calculus before, this class is ridiculously easy :)
Great professor and very fair tests! =) He's funny and really really nice. I have heard and now agree that if he's the best math1A prof. So if you're taking math 1A, take it with haiman!
His quizzes were a bit tricky, but the exams were easy. If you do the HW you should be able to get an A in this class.
great teacher, kinda squirelly little guy. knows his stuff tho. funny jokes. and if it's in pimentel, it's worth it to show up a minute or two early to watch him ride the rotating setup into the lecture hall
Professor Haiman is really good. He explains very well and is very fair. I liked his class. This was my first calculus course and it wasn't a bad experience. Haiman rocks!
Haiman is the best Math 1A professors. Fair to easy tests that are curved to help the students. He is pretty funny. If you need to take Math 1A you won't go wrong with Haiman.
very nice professor.if you're going to take math 1a take it with haiman. tests are fair. he's a very reasonable guy when it comes to curves on tests. he's a great lecturer and very approachable. i highly reccommend this class with haiman!
Very nice professor and very fair on tests. He is a great lecturer, with his almost funny math jokes at times, its very helpful to go to his lecture. I would agree best Math 1A Professor, hands down.
Without a doubt one of the easiest classes you could take at Cal. Haiman was helpful during office hours and very easy to correspond with, be it via email, phone, or in person. not sure how good of a lecturer he was since i only showed up to the first one, but his website was updated weekly, so you'd always know when and where to show up for tests.
fairly easy class, the midterms and final were pretty easy, though i have taken calculus before as i'm sure most of us had. if you haven't you will definitely need a good gsi and mine was terrible. the homework quizzes are what brought my grade down, and he curves the tests in favor of the class. he stutters a little bit.
Really good teaching style, lays out proofs very clearly in a step by step fashion. His tests were fairly easy, just make sure you take note of the little special tricks he does in lecture, as they'll likely show up on the midterms. Straight forward class, do the homework correctly and you'll get an A. I recommend dling the solution manual.
The lectures that I went to for this class were very enjoyable - he's extremely upbeat and excited, which is great for a 10AM lecture (for those of you who are like me and a 10AM class is early..). Tests, midterms, quizzes are incredibly straightforward - no tricks, no mind games, nada. Straight from the book questions. Highly recommended.
Best math professor at Cal! Explains everything clearly and occasionally makes cute jokes. He's very approachable and even answered questions in lecture. Midterms and final were fair. You'll want to attend his lectures!
best math 1a professor. He honestly just makes the class accessible. Material is easy to understand and mostly review if you took Calc AB. Although I know some of the class slept through lectures, I attended and was conscious for all the lectures and it was great. He explains every method using tons of examples and always has a sense of humor
Easy class. If you go to lecture, you don't even have to read the book. Or vice versa.
He gives just straight lectures. If you are a person who likes to write down notes, this is definitely the class for you. He gives many examples so it is very easy to understand what he is talking about. He is a little monotonous however, and it's very easy to get distracted or bored while you're in class, especially if it is a morning class.
Excellent Professor! Lectures were crystal clear with thorough examples. He tells adorable math jokes with a cute squeaky voice. Definitely take all math classes with him if you can!
Amazing professor. He explains everything clearly and is approachable. His passion for math is evident and leaks out; often his enthusiasm for something would pass on to me. I would highly recommend taking a class with Prof. Haiman.
For those who have a weak background/interest in math you will find this class very challenging. Haiman's lectures are speedy and hard to follow. Sometimes neither the lecture nor the textbook gives sufficient information for you to do the homework. The tests are easy and fairly curved, though a lot of disjoint topics are covered in the course.
VERY enthusiastic teacher with a very clear style of teaching. Homeworks are VERY challenging and time consuming, but you need to do them to learn the material. Can come off as a bit cocky and is not very willing to help an individual's situation. Must stress that the lectures were GREAT and attendance makes the grade.
currently taking 110 w/ Haiman, his lecture is clear and you can tell he is very knowledgeable in the area. But hwk is way too hard for an upper intro level course. GSI is awful. Be prepared to study on ur own or form groups.
Haiman's lectures are exceedingly clear and precise, and his knowledge in and ardor for mathematics is obvious. His homeworks are challenging, but they prepare you well for his tests. I highly recommend his class as a first upper-division one for any math major, or anyone who wants a better appreciation for the abstract elegance of linear algebra.
Good professor who explains clearly. His final was much more difficult than his midterms. Did not have time to cover some of the more difficult material in linear algebra in lecture. He knows his stuff, he's a god at arithmetic on the chalkboard.
Actually the only math professor that I understood what he was saying during the lecture. Very enthusiastic about the subject with unique approach to it (the things he covers you would not find in other und. grad. textbooks) Not easy though and HW takes time. Approachable during office hours. Definitely recommend him for discrete math subjects.
I never really went to class, but he gives really nice curves and doesn't require that you go to class or discussion
Generally good at teaching - very good at using the chalkboard to explain math, although his examples are often from the textbook and class can get boring sometimes, although I probably blame this on the subject more. Curves pretty easily, overall a good choice for Math1A
Prof Haiman likes to prove things in lecture but his tests are pretty straight forward problems that are similar to the practice exams he provides online. His curves are pretty nice and I would recommend you take Math 1A from him. He kind of rambles in lecture but overall it's ok, especially if you had AB Calc in high school.
The class was very easy in comparison to other math courses at Berkeley. The only bad thing was that Haiman likes to do a lot of proofs rather than examples. They were at times difficult to follow and in the end, unnecessary to get a good grade in the class. Not hard to get an A at all
Very clear and precise lectures, and everything is organized logically. Very coherent and cohesive. Homework was quite difficult... on the other hand, the exams were quite easy. Highly recommended.
Really nice guy. His tests were easy. Half the class got 100% on the first midterm and he still curved it in favor of those who did not receive full score. If you can take it with him, do it.
His tests are super hard.
Hard test. Few homework problems. He tends to talk about things not in the book.
Haiman is very well prepared for lecture but it helps to read up before to understand better. He also is a fair grader.
Great professor, fair tests and grading. Very clear in lecture; he comes in knowing exactly what he wants to say and does so effectively, good writing on the chalkboard. Dont know about office hours, though he seems friendly enough.
Haiman is great. Very fair professor whose midterms are very fair. Haven't taken any Calc before but if you had I'm sure you would breeze through his class. Definitely recommend him
Haiman is a great guy. People used to laugh because he is kind of quiet and a little awkward but he's honestly one of the sweetest professors I've had and is a cool guy. He's super into all mathematics which makes going to class entertaining if only because you hear the passion.
He is a very nice professor and prepares very well for each lecture. He is also willing to answer questions. Yet he covered too much material in this course and it seems that a lot of students cannot catch up.
Prof. Haiman is a solid lecturer. He is very passionate about math, which definitely shows in his teaching, but the order/way he taught calculus was sometimes confusing, and his blackboard penmanship could've been better.
While I would not say that Haiman is a particularly inspirational lecturer, he goes through the material in a straightforward manner and it is relatively clear what you will be tested on. That being said, be prepared for unclear/conceptual questions on exams.
I LOVE professor Haiman!!!!!! He's so adorable and he's the best math professor I've had at Berkeley. His lectures are so well organized and he's easy to follow along with.
Professor Haiman is a chill dude. His lectures aren't great and if I were to retake this class, I wouldn't go to any lectures b/c they were disorganized. Instead, supplement the lectures by reading the textbook (not mandatory) b/c he posts all the textbook sections online. Tests were pretty easy & curved really nice. There's online webwork too
Great professor! His lectures really made sure you understood the basic concepts and he has a good sense of humor. Tests are worth a lot of your grade but the questions are pretty straight forward and the curve is generous. You also get unlimited submissions on homework which helps you get a good grade and understand the material.
Great class! One of the very few math classes that doesn't have weekly quizzes. Generous grading policies and he curved class (but the grades almost only based on midterms and final). His lectures are great (sometimes have bad jokes lol), but in terms of preparing for exams, sections and textbook will be more helpful.
Lectures were decent, but honestly u will be better off studying using HW questions. No quiz, but 3 midterms. Midterms were RIDICULOUSLY easy, but Final exam was kinda hard. Chill guy.
He is a very chill professor, he even showed us his dog in one of his recorded lectures. He is very thorough when explaining concepts and you're allowed unlimited attempts on homework. Very cool dude
recorded lectures, and he even puts them out ahead of time if you'd like to get ahead. this was a more laid-back clas, but i've still learned quite a bit. prof haiman's lectures are very thorough and often include proofs, but aren't too theoretical, as he gives example problems in the lectures. also, unlimited attempts on hw/ completion grade on hw
Students allowed one page cheat sheet for the exams. The homework was a lot harder than tests and examples but as long as you DON'T PROCRASTINATE (that much) and make smart friends, you'll get it done. Plus Webwork allows for unlimited tries on problems so you have no excuse but to get 100% for hw.
Professor Haiman is a great professor. His lectures are a good starting point for homework assignments, but sometimes, you'll need to do some outside research to learn more about a given topic. His assignments also prepare you well for the exams. Overall, the class is very similar to AP Calculus, but it tends to go more in-depth on certain topics.
Grade is pretty much entirely made up of exams and final exam. Prerecorded lecture, often times I had to go to outside lessons to fully understand lessons in class
He is a really good professor, who cares about his students. Lectures are mostly clear and well-explained.
Definitely one of the best Professors I have had up to date. He's very sweet, and whatever is on the homework or in lecture will be tested. He is very approachable and honestly made me like math again.
Professor Haiman is one of the sweetest individuals I have encountered at Berkeley. While a large part of your grade depends on exams, his clobber policy is very generous. He is understanding and genuinely cares about his students. Lectures were clear, but I sometimes had to do extra learning/practice to fully understand the concepts.
If you dont have a foundation in calc, you will have to work hard for the grade. Exams are very similar to study guides, except Final is wayy harder than study guide. However, if you have taken Calc AB and BC, this class should not be hard. Besides that, he is a really nice man, but due to covid you dont get to talk to him unless OH.
Very solid lecturer, doesn't overstep the boundaries of 1a which in this case is a good thing. The midterms/final is way harder than the homework and lecture problems but the curve is pretty generous so it's not that big of a deal. The difficulty comes from being willing to put in the work to pay attention to his lectures but otherwise its p basic
The class was pretty good, I enjoyed it! the material was well covered, he was so inspirational, I wish I could cut his ponytail and keep it for myself tho :(
Haiman is a good lecturer. If you took Calc AB in high school, you will get 95% of the material already. The delta-epsilon proof is no joke. Anyway, WebWork has unlimited attempts, one cheat sheet on both sides for midterms, two sheets for final. He gives old tests to study, which sorta parallel the tests. Gotta do outside work sometimes though.
Tests were very easy; most of the questions on the test were the same questions you would find for the homework, just with different numbers. Discussion was not mandatory (but helpful). Lectures were recorded and clear. Grading on tests was a bit too specific, but nothing too ground-breaking. If you are good at math, then this course is very easy.
He's okay. Lectures could be clearer at times and some of the material he goes over in class is irrelevant and never covered on tests. Watch some OCT videos before the lecture and do the homework every week, and overall, it should be a manageable 'A'.
Lectures were alright but the homework and tests were terrible
explains concepts clearly. arguably easier than ap calc (if you have no basis for calc good luck). do the homework and take advantage of the cheat sheets for tests!!
Everything was decent until the GSI strike. Lectures can be kinda all over the place but midterms were pretty fair. But once the GSI strike started he's really shown how little he cares about students! He made the final 50% of our grade, and it was extremely hard. No leeway was given and it was mostly fill-in-the blank. Terrible prof.
The lectures are not too bad; he goes very in-depth about some concepts that usually are not covered on tests and homework sets. The homework sets can be VERY strenuous at times. The midterms this year were not all too bad, but the worst was the final (mostly due to lack of support from the strike and lack of exposure to the content on the final).
If you don't already have a solid foundation of calculus you are going to struggle alot.
I love Haiman. Great lecturer, cares about his students. All of the exams and homeworks are completely reasonable - it's all stuff he teaches explicitly in class. People who complain about the difficulty of the final tend to be people who don't study very much but still for some reason feel entitled to an A.
Prof Haiman's lectures were not amazing but clear and comprehensive. Compared to other M1A profs, Haiman is the best. His homework is much less, a doublesided note sheet is allowed on exams, and exams are typically easier. He is also very understanding and kind as a person.
Lectures are pretty helpful because he goes over a bunch of examples.
He's okay. Weekly homework had unlimited tries and carried my grade. 3 midterms and a final. **In this class, you get what you put in.** I took calc before but got my ass kicked. Goes until integrals. Very unsympathetic to failing students. 2 sided cheat sheet for tests & best math1a prof out of the bunch. Khan Academy will teach you the material.
I think his midterms and finals are fair and reflective of the homework. The class is light work if you've already taken calc. Final was half our grade but he curved anything above a 77 to an A range. Has a clobber policy so u can do bad on 2 midterms and do well. His response to the strike for grading made many anxious, but the curve made it okay.
Haiman was a great professor. For such a basic class, he made it interesting and clearly enjoyed teaching it. I recommend doing the readings before lectures and doing homework at least 2 days before it is due. He responds to his email readily. If you took calc in high school this class should be a low-stress, but fun class.
With the GSI strike that was taking place he was very flexible and he wanted the best for his students. His lectures are always recorded and he was very clear during his lectures.
He did a good job of being straightforward about what we would be tested on in his exams. His lecture for this class is mainly a follow-along class since he is writing example problems of the topics you are learning, which would then be seen in the homework he gives. Those homework problems then became test questions so I would follow along.
Professor Haiman is an amazing professor. His lectures are really clear. There is weekly homework, 3 midterms and a final. If you do better on the final you can replace that grade with up to two midterms with lower scores. He really cares about his students. Definitely not a difficult class.
Lectures are just the prof working through example problems, homework is on WebWork which gives you unlimited attempts to get correct. He's very calm and well-spoken. The class isn't fun by any means but he's the best option for 1A. Just grind out past midterms and you're golden.
This class was super easy if you'd taken Calc before. I didn't go to a single lecture and was completely fine. I also got a concussion during the finals week and Prof Haiman was flexible and let me take an exam with a different professor later in the week.
He's chill but once the GSI strike happened, it went downhill. Lectures can be theoretical but midterms were fair if you work into it. When the GSI strike happened he made the final 50% of the grade with fill-in-the-blanks, and his responses to the "cheating" allegations during the final were awful. Yet, he's the best 1A prof unless you get Paulin.
he is a good professor, lectures were kinda clear. However, he is really inconsiderate and uncompassionate.
Professor was very kind and understanding. The lectures were very theoretical but often included him going through different examples. Midterms were reasonable and they resembled past ones which he provided for practice. The final was a bit complicated due to the strike but he did his best to manage the situation and make it as fair as possible.
Haiman is a really great lecturer and his notes are really easy to read! Discussions are not mandatory and there are no quizzes.
Very good and well-structured explanations and lecture slides/notes, kind grading criteria, and straight-forward exams.
Professor Haiman is a pretty good lecturer. He's thorough, but sometimes a bit too fast to keep up. My only complaints are that he sometimes rambles a bit and he often neglects to mention the most efficient methods of doing a problem, focusing more on the theoretical stuff.
This man is an extremely reasonable professor. His midterms were very fair, along with his final, and partial credit was always available. He also has generally good lectures, though they can be supplemented by the textbook or outside resources if necessary. He's also accessible on Ed Discussion and seems to care about his students.
Professor Haiman is Awesome! Clearly very knowledgeable. His lectures are very systematic and thorough. Attendance is not mandatory for lectures or discussions, but still highly recommended to attend. I never read the textbook, his lectures were more than sufficient to teach me all the content. The exams also were very fair.
Haiman is very nice and caring! Sometimes he went a bit too fast in lecture or would ramble on too much to the point where he'll miss the main point of the lesson...but his exams are very fair and he has a clobber policy (2 midterm scores replaced by a higher final score).
I simply got an A because I put in the work and used self-studying tactics. The textbook was the most helpful for conceptual understanding, but his homework did not feel nearly as helpful. I also think that the lectures were not effective, as they were one hour long without answering any helpful questions or going at a reasonable pace. Fair exams.
I recently had Professor Haiman for Math 1B in Fall 2023. Coming from someone who wasn't too sure about calculus (took BC in sophomore year), Haiman's class was surprisingly manageable and not incredibly content-heavy as expected. The tests were always fair and his clobber policy is incredibly generous - I highly recommend this professor.
An outstanding professor! Lectures usually consist of an overview of the theory, followed by going over practice problems. The lectures are methodical, thorough, and very useful. Homework is also reasonable and prepares you well for exams. Overall, he's a fantastic professor, and I highly recommend him!
Haiman's teaching style is ineffective, goes through the concepts fast assuming you already know them and does practice problems the whole time. I took it 1st sem 1st year and took Calc AB, and underestimated the difficulty. I would suggest studying from the start on your own and I regret not grinding from the start. Curve is huge btw.
Exams were very fair, homework prepares you well. Lectures were very structured and I found the practice examples very useful.
tbh the lectures were hard to understand and boring. the professor was kind but inconsiderate.
It's a tough subject but Haiman is a good professor. The curve was generous and you can drop two midterm grades if you do better on the final. Read the textbook before lectures(!) - it'll make so much more sense. Not too much homework, and it's graded by completion. The first midterm was very challenging, but the next two were much easier (for me).
Hes a great and understanding person. But in his lectures, he kinda just yaps... I usually skip lectures and review the videos posted after in 1.4x speed and end up learning from google because concepts may be overcomplicated. You can tell he really enjoys the sophisticated nature of math, his exams are very fair.
honestly its not too bad of a class but its kinda a waste of time. It was easier to learn the material by yourself on khan academy and pauls math notes. Boring lectures. Tests always make sure to screw you over and not too kind with partial credit.
The lectures are way to fast and don't really add to your understanding. For the first month or two I went to every lecture religously. It didn't help, if anything it just confused me. People stopped going to sections because they also dont help. If you take this class just use Paulins recorded lectures from when he previously taught it. Hard tests
Professor was kind, however personally his lectures were confusing and tended to lack any in depth explanation. I attended all his lectures, however I did notice that people started not coming. Class isn't too bad if you take the time to study outside of lecture, and really work on the homework. Professor Haiman is nice and accessible through OH
He is the best professor you could ever ask for! The exams were reasonable, and the homework effectively prepared me. The lectures were highly organized, and I found the practice examples to be extremely beneficial.
I would highly recommend Professor Haiman! He is a very solid lecturer, consistently giving a good overview of the theory and also going over a lot of practice examples. Exams are very fair.
An exceptionally detailed, methodical, straightforward, and fair professor. Highly recommended for lower div math courses.
great
Professor Haiman is an extremely intelligent and caring professor! His lectures are very clear as he makes sure his students understands the concepts well, and does many example problems during class. Exams are straight forward and apply everything we learned in lecture with no curveballs.
I'm really not a proofs person so the content of this class was like pulling teeth, but Mark explains concepts well and gives fair and straight-forward exams. He's a nice guy and willing to help. I would pore over the textbook for any concepts I couldn't grasp, and GSIs are also helpful in explaining things.
Haiman is a detailed professor, but his lectures can be hit-or-miss. Concepts are sometimes overcomplicated, so I found Google and unstuck AI more helpful for study prep. Overall, fair exams and worth taking if you're willing to put in the work.
Prof. Haiman is more on the shy/timid side and he lectured just fine and didn't grade too hard. His teaching style doesn't really stick out. You're allowed attempts for homework till you get it right. I recommend him if you're someone who doesn't enjoy math but wants a more easy going prof. I enjoy math and felt this was an easy class.
Caring and accommodating prof. He's the chillest prof in Math department.
Not a Maths person, challenging course in nature. But Haiman did a great job making concepts comprehensible, had straightforward exams, really clear and fair grading. Would recommend taking with him.
Really nice professor with fair exams. Lectures are straightforward for the most part. Oftentimes provides different techniques/outlooks on concepts that are presented slightly different than the textbook, which is nice.
Very fair exams, kind and helpful during office hours as well. Also a very fair grader and his lectures were clear and not boring. Didn't have prior proofs experience and he helped me understand them a lot better
Haiman was a good lecturer, went over examples in class (be sure to read the textbook on your own though!). Grading bins very generous and test easy as he often copies and pastes from his old exams. Was willing to chat with me during office hours about math in general; he's a chill and nice guy.
Great professor for 55! Highly suggest reading the textbook along with his lectures to fully grasp everything. On average, his exam problems are easier to around the same level of difficulty as other pas 55 professors. Everything on his exams are what's been covered in class AND homework, so listen and do both carefully!
