hes great. a sweet and nice guy. very cool and down to earth in general. fair tests and no actual hw assignments
His lectures are interesting and he always tries to apply current events to whatever he's covering. He is real strict about attendance and coming in on time. There were 3 papers and an in-class final. Great prof for contemporary theory.
I liked this class, didnt do too well on first assignment, and prof Halling was very helpful in helping me get my grade up. the concepts in this class are a bit difficult to understand, but he does a really good job in using examples to make things clear.
The man is HOT,and HELPFUL, and CLEAR. What more can a student ask for?
This professor is definitely one of my favorites. He takes a somewhat boring subject and makes it so interesting. He uses great examples to get his point across. He's a fair grader, a good listener, and a funny story teller. Not to mention, he ain't bad to look at! Definitely take this class.
This is the first professor since pre K that i've ever had a crush on! So sexy and so funny. Good professor though. You have to work for the grade but not too hard! he just wants to know that you know the matrial. I managed to get an A despite the drooling! Just read and undestand what the theorist said and reiterate in your own words.
hes good during the summer classes, very easy-going, (thumbs up)
the material was so boring & he doesn't make it easy to stay awake since he shuts the lights. he gives a take home midterm & final but they were both hard & unfair. he lectures about each theorists for a day and then expects you to write a 4 page paper about it? kinda ridiculous
What a great and intelligent professor. His lectures are very interesting and he makes the class very fun. It's even better if students participate in the discussions. A mid term and final essays are required and he makes sure you understand the material before writing it. An easy A.
I think he is one of the best teachers. The material may be kind of boring but he made it interesting w/ his jokes and the way he explained it. The lights out thing does make you tired but the teacher doesnt. His midterm and final was easy and fair. You do it home so you can use your text, notes and the internet to get information. Hes awesome!
Current Soc Theory. Very Good, he makes everything clear.
fairly easy class. he explains the concepts really well. funny and good looking!
u need the book, read it. funny professor, easy A. undecided as far as hotness goes
so goofy
Great professor. Very clear lectures and very accomodating to the students. Will answer any and all stupid questions with nary a smirk.
This professor is very clear in his lectures and he lets you know what he expects from you.His lectures are not boring at all. He gives three take home exams...ahh there is not research paper!! and the most important of his qualities is that he is super H-O-T and S-M-A-R-T!!!
He's funny. Usually forgets things but nothing bad. Great lectures, he keeps the class involved and answers all questions. Does'nt mind being challenged by his students and hes cute. What more can you ask for!
His lectures are the best I have seen in any professor. Very interesting and helpful. There were 3 papers.
So I have had the pleasure of having Mark as my summer professor... and ladies let me tell you. Yum with a capital Y! He's so hot that I dont mind the fact that I will prob get a C plus in his class. I wonder if hes married? no ring, so hopefully not. I want to date him, so mark, if you're reading this.. CALL A SISTA... mwa. I want to have to have
Great teacher, curves exams and gives great lectures. You won't be bored!
Very sarcastic fella don't tick him off, he will not hesitate to embarrass you. Fair grader, curves exams and pretty interesting lecture he won't send you to sleep. Exams are a little tricky hence the curve but if you study which I didn't an A is easy to get.
Very Boring. He goes on and on and on. He doesn't let you out a minute earlier than you time. No papers & multiple choice test. He is pretty easy. Take notes read the chapters and you'll do fine.
Good Teacher and fun. Can pick on you if anything. Teaches very well, but exams are tricky. However, I do recommend him.
He's really cool. I found the class interesting.
GReat class, amazing teacher to look and listen too. Only three papers no exams. Goes over topics with clarity, perception, and endurance. Can go on forever! note to prof: If you like the BABAGANUSH and loooooove to play some softball Gimme a Call sometime
he made classical social theory FUN. He gave only 3 papers, no midterm or final. Makes the subject clear and easy.He is very helpful. I highly recommend his class
He is AWESOME!!! He gives a great lecture plus puts notes on the board. He is very helpful on the papers. He is funny too! Even though the theories are difficult to understand, he gives examples, so everyone understands. I LOVED HIM! TAKE HIM!
He's a fantastic professor. He gives excellent notes that's clear and precise. I would definitely take more classes with him. He can be a tough grader but once you attend classes, take notes and bring your textbook to class. He ties his topics together and pretty much writes his own papers. There was (3) 8-10pgs papers. No exams. Take him!!
Go to class then you'll do fine on your papers. This professor is so funny that theory class is not boring at all. I definitely would take him again for another class.
Professor Halling is a good professor. He doesn't give a midterm or final, just 3 papers through the course. Very easy papers, he tells you what he wants to see in the papers. Don't text or even touch your cell phone in his class, he get's annoyed and calls you out on it during the lectures.
Professor Halling is a great professor. He knows an undergraduate education won't make you into an expert in the field, so aside from sociology he's also interested in teaching you new vocabulary words, and how to write papers. Sometimes he'll kill a topic, and I can't for the life of me understand how some people are still confused. Come on!
Great Professor! but he's a tough greater. The writing assignments are tough but if you go to class, take your note, you'll do fine.
He's really not a tough grader at all if you follow his guidelines and fulfill the assignments. He's a phenomenal professor, I really learned quite a bit about medical sociology- and definitely enjoyed going to class, he keeps his students highly motivated.
Prof. Halling is a great professor! I took him for 2 semesters (for both Soc 221 & 223). Don't expect an easy A, as he is a tough grader on the papers he assigns. There are 3 papers in total, and he expects you to write about 8-10 pages for each paper. Make sure you come to class and take good notes, as the essay questions are directly from the not
Halling the the BEST!!! I took 3 of his classes because he makes the most boring material interesting. On top of that he's hilarious. By far my fav professor at Hunter! He's no push over - you will actually have to do work but if you take good notes it shouldn't be difficult at all and you walk away from your classes actually knowing something.
this guy is amazing! wish he were teaching current soc theory. breaks theory down and provides practical applications, which is a gift my philo prof's do not possess. fair grader, accepts late papers, is absolutely hilarious, and has a middle aged eligible bachelor look that makes him fun to gawk at. take him!
He is definitely AMAZING. He always made class very interesting. There were no midterms or finals, only 3 papers which is covered during his lecture. If you go to his lectures and have good notes you are guaranteed an A! Attendance is important but at the same time you wouldn't want to miss his class so it isn't bad at all :)
GREAT EYE CANDY ! great professor, knows his stuff. so cute ! gives 3 exams all multiple choice.. gives review sheets but does not review, but if you come to class u will do great. lectures are really good.
One of the best professors I ever had! He makes the most boring subject fun! Gives great examples, notes, and lectures. He's really smart and funny. He gives 2 papers and 1 final exam. Def take him, you wont regret him! Also, hes pretty cute!
amazing professor... one of, if not the, best i've ever had. i was hoping to get him for 223 as well but he's not teaching it next semester. great guy
AMAZING!!! The best professor! His papers can be tough, but you can meet with him to discuss the paper; he is very helpful! He knows the mateial very well! If you go to class and participate, you can earn an A! Hands down, best sociology professor in the dept!
Mark Halling is one of the best professors I have had at Hunter. There really are not enough great things to say about him - take his class, trust me.
Fantastic professor! He knows his stuff and is always extremely helpful. Lectures are always fun and interesting. Attendance is a must. There were two in class exams and a final which were all multiple choice. Just show up to class, study the power points and read the chapters and you will do fine.
Great guy and a great professor. He keeps the class from being completely boring, and his lectures and notes are very thorough. The tests directly reflect his lectures so make sure to take good notes and to study them! If you remember what he talks about in class then getting an A will be easy. He is also one of the better dressed professors.
3 tests overall, pretty easy but you have to read the textbook, test is all multiple choice so as long as you study, you'll be fine. participation is a must as he "favors" those who do. only allowed to be absent twice. friendly and laid-back professor.
Great professor! Lectures are not boring at all. He's funny as well
He will make you love sociology! Great witty, and humorous teacher, has a really good understanding of how classes should be taught. No homework, 3 tests relatively easy but based on little details of the book, and he curves. It's not an easy A but it's not a D or F either, you'll definitely love learning with him!
BORING CLASS. I slept in his class for the whole semester!!!
Incredibly solid Professor. Is very knowledgeable in his material. Make sure you stay attentive so that the conversations stay interesting. He is very friendly, he helps you during office hours, he curves his tests by 10 points, and offers a very interesting and simple class. There is no reason you shouldn't get an A in this class if you try.
Awesome Professor! Does a good job at keeping you entertained and gets a good grasp of your attention.. Def knows his stuff and is quite funny. LOVED him!
Dry subject but makes it interesting and is very good at breaking down complicated concepts. Funny and uses multimedia to get his point across. Assignments are all directly from the notes. Treats students very respectfully. A lot of reading but you don't get overwhelmed if you fall behind because he covers it in class.
Simply he makes you love Sociology
some of the readings are interesting, but you can do without doing them. his lectures are insanely boring. he is strictly against technology, NO laptops. He IS a nice guy, bad jokes, but extremely nice. two long papers which he grades fairly but with HIGH expectations and 1 detailed multiple choice final.
Very genuine professor. A lot of readings so if you do not like to read than do not take his class. I personally loved learning in the class and him as a professor but could not keep up with the readings so they hurt my grade. If I were you, I would take this professor, do the readings and get an A. Definitely an excellent professor still.
I wish there were more professors like him.
He uses media to make the class funny, I simply love him, really makes effort to teach not like others. Every professor should be like him. Tests are fair, read textbook, know the terms, and you will get an A.
He's a nice teacher. His exams can be hard if you did not study for it, but he curves the grade. There is a lot of reading required so don't take it if you don't like reading. He post all his powerpoint online. He's funny, respectful, and very knowledgeabler person. Attendance is a MUST. And he likes students to participate in his class.
Amazing professor!! Exams can be tricky though. SO do all his reading, read the lectures and notes taken from class and you should get an A in the class. The whole is Multiple choice but don't be fooled by some of the questions..they have a tricky side to them. He curves the grades too. SO 2 exams and a final!
Very funny and super cute. I wasn't interested in sociology in the slightest but he makes it very interesting and makes it easy to pay attention. He provides study sheets for exams, they're helpful but not everything on the exam is mentioned so be sure you go to class & pay attention & take good notes on what he says also. You'll love him, most do
Makes inherently boring material pretty interesting. Funny, understanding when it comes to late assignments, overall great prof
Vague subject, but great professor. Cares about his students, power points help a lot, the tests are very tricky.
Great professor. He's very knowledge about sociology. Despite how dull the course may seem, he'll make you love it with clips from I love lucy, Mean Girls, pictures from the Simpsons and more. However, there is a lot to read and his exams are VERY tricky. Take your chances with him.
His class is a lot of fun, not too challenging, and yes he is hot. He is obviously very knowledgable, but on further reflection I feel like he was giving us a very surface-level interpretation of the theorists we learned. I found my knowledge of some of the classic theory we covered was seriously deficient as I moved on to more advanced classes.
Funny, sweet and smart. Can be a little silly at times, but he is really engaging so it is a good thing. :)
Sometimes the lectures can be boring but an easy an interesting class overall
Very nice guy. His jokes are funny but can be annoying at times. I was really looking forward to having him, but I was disappointed. He is not a very good teacher as he does not go into depth. Also, when students asked "deep" questions, his response showed he only has textbook knowledge.
Easy class, a couple of tests and final. Attendence isn't mandatory. But one thing I could say is that his tests are extremely hard and go in depth.
very nice FUNNY guy but he was kind of a hard grader. there is a quiz every class which is good because its only worth 5% and it keeps you up with the reading. theres only one book to buy. the name class sounds boring but it was actually very interesting. fun class! not boring. 3 or 4 papers & one multiple choice final.
I really didn't have any interest in Sociology but Professor Halling made me find a new interest in Sociology. There was no homework but now I realize it hurt a lot of people's grade because his first 2 tests were so hard. There were 2 tests and the final. My advise is if you're using norton, Go on the website and do the practice quiz.
Halling is a chill guy but when it comes to his teaching, i hated it. He gave no homework, no essays, nothing. Many people think this is good but for me, these are crucial factors to my academic study. He was such a laid back teacher that his class was not taken seriously. He also used old power points (Links are expired). His tests are VERY hard
A very funny and chill guy! Theory can be boring sometimes but he makes the class interesting. Take this amazing professor!
He is a handsome and charming fellow but his tests were extremely hard (even if you study truly in depth). No homework, no essays; your entire grade is based on ONLY three test grades! If you plan on taking an Intro to Sociology course, I HIGHLY suggest not taking Professor Halling!
Amazing professor - took very dense, complex reading and ideas and made them understandable, interesting, and relevant to life today. Dreaded this class prior to taking it. Liked it so much I'm taking Soc 223 with him this semester. Very helpful and open to questions. I highly recommend taking him!
Very engaging and funny professor. Yeah, he can be a little corny sometimes, but he is very nice and very helpful. My only complaints are that his Powerpoints are a bit disorganized and his tests are a bit tricky, but he does curve the tests. Not exactly an easy A, but still worth it.
He likes teaching which is a plus. He is funny and welcomes student comments.
Professor Halling is awesome. He breaks down film and sociology well and you see how they connect. 3 small papers and 1 final exam. The most smoothest and coolest class of my entire undergrad life.
Took Halling for Soc of Film and really enjoyed the class. He clearly loves the subject and is a really decent guy. Three short papers and one final. Do the readings, come to class and participate, and write decent papers and you can expect an A. I would definitely take him again. Not too hard on the eyes either.
Definitely would take a class with him again. Very knowledgeable on the material, and assigns sensible writing prompts. The course material is also very interesting.
Awesome
Good professor, if you study and put in the work you can get an easy A. I hardly went to class and studied the night before the exams and received a B+ so if you put in more effort than that you should get an A. He is funny and nice and has some interesting points. Not a class I was interested in before but enjoyed it.
The class could have been a little more organized. It takes a very long time to receive any grades back from him and lectures don't really go with what is in the textbook. You definitely need to take some time and study if you want to do well.
He uploads a reading schedule for class; however, he does not stick to it based on how his lecture goes. He keeps the students interested with his witty humor and relatable scenarios. He is easygoing and a fair grader. You should definitely go to him during office hours. He is interesting to talk to. Make sure to study with his presentations.
Took Halling for Soc of Film and it was a fun experience. He's very easy going and seems to enjoy teaching. Not very strict on attendance and definitely a fair grader. Participate some, do the readings, write decent papers and you'll get an A. Doesn't hurt that he looks like he stepped out of a jcrew ad. The man is like a fine wine.
Do not fall for his reviews. He makes you work hard for your grade and the tests go way too in depth for a 100 level class. You might think it's a plus having only 2 exams but trust me, the material should be broken down more.
Halling's a good guy - and I never write reviews for ratemyprofessor. If you care about your grade (i.e., if you actually read & try & interact, you'll get a good grade, trust me!)
Charming, witty, intelligent, charismatic, I can go on.. Bottom line is that his classes are interesting, not at all boring, and he clearly loves what he does. He's very kind and approachable if you need help, and he's really not out to fail anyone. He's here to teach, and he's really good at it. If you need to take SOC22300 - take it with Mark.
I took his class in the winter and since the lectures are longer in winter I kinda stopped paying attention halfway through, but he definitely tries to keep your attention! Powerpoints organized perfectly; didn't need to read the textbook. Tests weren't hard as long as you study the material. He gets brownie points for referencing Mean Girls a lot.
I wish I could take another course with Prof. Halling, and I would recommend any of his courses to Sociology students. If you're a student who needs to take Contemporary Socio as a requirement but are not a fan of theory like one of my classmates then go with Halling because it's an easy A and never a dull moment whatever your level of interest is.
He wants to interact with everyone in the class and wants to remember at least 250 students names. Gives well thought lectures and attendance is not mandatory but is a blast and who wouldn't want to go to his class.
Does not make proper study guides!!!
Questions on tests are way too in detail and his study guides are broad. He is nice and funny though. No extra credit.
I really enjoy sociology and he made it interesting. 3 exams, one paper. He's funny and a good professor, I just wish he tried harder to keep the class quiet as he's lecturing. Occasionally the test wouldn't exactly reflect the study guide, just make sure you keep up with the readings.
I took soc 101 with professor halling and hes a good professor. His lectures are great and hes a funny and entertaining professor. He tries to learn as many names as possible. There are three tests and a paper all which are reasonable. Put in some effort and you should get a decent grade.
I took this as a lecture with about 300 students, so he didn't make attendance mandatory, but his tests were based completely on his lectures. As long as you take decent notes and listen during lectures, you'll get an easy a.
He was a really good prof. he was funny and kept the class interesting. I personally never used the textbook for SOC101
Really knowledgable professor. Has a liberal bias, but good otherwise. Pretty funny. Easy class. Few grades, 2 midterms worth 20% each. 1 Paper worth 20% and Final worth 40%. Easy Tests and easy grader. A couple questions on the test can be ambiguous and will trip you up and since there are 200 kids in class, I wouldn't ask a question for clarity.
Honestly a great dude. He keeps the class light-hearted and throws in some jokes during lectures. Def recommend him!
He is such a good person and professor. Definitely recommend him!
I had Professor Halling for Intro to Soc and he was great! The lectures were intriguing and fun. He's awesome, but prepare for those exams. I enjoyed his class a lot :)
One of the best professors at Hunter !!!
I took his soc 201 class in a huge lecture hall. His review sheets are not helpful. His lectures are helpful considering we didnt have any homework. The 2 midterms and final were tough but he curves our tests. Good luck students.
Mark is an excellent professor. A lot of readings are assigned, but he's understanding and will spend more time on a particular reading if he feels it needs to be explained more. 3 papers, 1 final exam, and daily quizzes based on the readings. He thoroughly goes over the readings each class, but make sure to read before if you want to do well.
the best professor ever!!!!!! All I could say. Really enjoyed the class, and he truly helped when I was struggling. Take him if you can!
participation is required and we had quizzes almost every class based on assigned readings
Professor Halling makes his lectures interesting. Besides his Powerpoint slides, he also shows the class videos. For this class, we were graded on attendance, daily quizzes on the assigned readings, three papers, and a final. The reading can be dense, but he breaks it down in class for us to understand it. Overall, great class, but not an easy A.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Despite the large classroom size, he tries his best to engage all students into a conversation. He gives us plenty of time to read some texts before the class. No homework is given too! Tests are fairly easy since he has posted the powerpoints and you just need to take good notes.
Because there were 250 students, attendance wasn't mandatory and neither was participation. The lectures themselves are very clear and he explains every idea in a way that we can understand, and even shows videos to further clarify. Gives out great review sheets and if you study, you will get an A!! DEFINITELY TAKE THE CLASS IF YOU CAN!
He does give study guides before test. There are three tests for this class. The 1st and 2nd are straightforward b/c everything comes from the notes and reading. The 3rd/final is different, I prepared the test by reviewing notes/study guides and the test is about the mostly about class discussions, only 1/4 comes from notes/study guide :(
Attendance isnt mandatory but the tests are based more on class discussions than the readings. The study guides didnt always correlate to the tests. Some of the classes are really easy to get distracted in. He was sometimes late and had unprepared slides. Hes really charismatic though, and did a good job at keeping the lecture hall engaged.
Professor Halling is witty and hilarious (in his own way)! It was a treat having him for my first ever course in Sociology. Be weary that tests do account for a huge chunk of the grade, but his tests are in a manageable format. The final also follows that format! Show up, do your readings, and try to participate and you'll get the grade you desire!
You can theoretically skip the lectures but beware of in-class specific topic questions that will appear once or twice each test, if you are prepared to lose some points you can skip lectures entirely - but i wont recommend that since he is funny, charismatic, and his lectures are overall pretty fun to attend. Good teacher, take him if you can
The study guides helped for the first 2 exams but the final was mostly based on in-class discussions. Attendance isn't mandatory but I wouldn't suggest skipping a lot of lectures since a lot of the test material connects back to in-class discussions. Lectures can get really boring sometimes but he's overall a good professor.
Two words: Cool Dad. Halling is chill and so is the class. Interesting lectures and he seems very knowledgeable. One of the few classes where discussions create insights. There aren't a lot of assignments, so you'll have to ace the few tests and 1-2 essays he assigns. Overall, a decent class and would recommend. Also, thumbs up for no textbooks!
Professor Halling is a caring professor who is accessible outside of class and have a clear grading criteria.
He was honestly the best teacher Ive had. Completely understanding that the pandemic brought new challenges to its students and was flexible. He gave us essay to write that were about two pages each and we had quizzes that were fairly simple if you watched the lectures. I highly recommend to take this class!
This class is an easy A. Professor Hailing is a great professor. His class is asynchronous and everything is well organized on blackboard. He answers emails and questions you may have during his office hours. The tests are not hard you just have to know the concepts your required to read. There are four exams and three writing assignments.
This class is based on 4 exams and 3 papers. The essays are so easy - within 2 pages and he does not care about the format; you can attain the knowledge to write an essay from reading like two pages articles the provides. He does gives a LOT of readings. The exams are from readings and his lecture.
Professor Halling is very well-spoken! He is caring and always available for Thursday office hours. Many students hang around and chat about the week's readings, current events, etc. He really breaks the professor-student power dynamic and really tries to meet you on your level. Grading: 3 papers (20%) + 4 tests (80%)
So hes a good professor and answers emails asap but hes a tough grader. Im going to be honest its the worst class ive taken at Hunter. I regret taking it. I dont recommend unless you are really into sociological theory
Professor Halling is very nice and answers emails promptly. Classical Soc theory is a very hard class - the concepts are confusing and difficult. Ask lots of questions in class and you should be fine. 3 papers, weekly assignments, and a final exam. The exam is on the more difficult so study real hard for it. He does curve the grades (for exams).
Prof Halling is great. He's very nice, answers emails/questions promptly, and gives a week or so for essays. The concepts in this class are tough, but he breaks them down for the most part. My only critique is that his study guide for the final isn't very accurate/helpful. You may have to learn some concepts (on the study guide) on your own.
Professor Halling is very laidback and nice. He encourages everyone to participate (though it's not mandatory). His papers aren't terrible as long as you understand the theorists and their concepts. There's quite a lot of reading and his final exam is pretty difficult so study extra hard of that. The essays and weeks responses are relatively easy.
Classical Sociological Theory was a tough class. It took me so long to understand the writings of the theorists. Professor Halling did a good job of breaking their main points down. He is very nice and always willing to answer any questions. His final exam is on the harder side, but he does curve. I would recommend taking him - he's a solid choice.
This professor is a real gem, he's so sweet and makes you want to listen to him. He is very relatable and generous with the grading. Tests were online for me as well as lectures once a week. Take him!
His tests were online but questions were very confusingly worded. It might throw you off even if you are pretty smart. This class had 3 online tests, including the final. (non-cumulative) Lots of reading too but no homework.
There was only 2 exams+1 final+ 1 essay. My class was Hybrid so I only had to go to class once a week. And a lot of people didn't go. Since there wasn't any attendance and he was just going over things in his voice lecture. you're suspected to go through articles and the voice lecture beforehand.
Professor Halling's lectures are a great combination of funny as well as educational. He makes his lectures interesting by connecting it to real world problems and lives of college students. Interacts with the students a lot and is hilarious, but also very knowledgable on his subject. He knows how to teach, def recommend ! fav professor tbh
2 short multiple choice midterms, one easy paper, and a short multiple choice final. doesnt grade on attendance but it helps to go cuz what he talks about will be on the exams and its better if you listen to the whole lecture instead of asking friends for notes, trust me i went through that for his first exam. great professor, smart and funny
incredible teacher!! only 3 tests (including final) + paper. all of the tests are relatively easy and he curves the tests by a lot even if you don't do well. just look over whatever he posts on blackboard and you'll be fine. if you have the chance of taking him, please do!
Great guy. Very funny and keeps class interesting. Easy class as long as you study and read.
3 test 1 paper. Frist 2 test were easy and final was kinda hard. For the paper you have to choose a non-complicated but important topic. He is a very approachable person. Lectures are fun and interesting.
Love this professor, highly recommend
Professor Halling is amazing and respected for what he does. Lectures are fun but not mandatory and he will post a video of the slide shows explaining them thoroughly like a YouTube video. I was someone who couldn't attend class but I showed up when needed to and got the work done. You're graded on 1 paper and 2 tests. Definition of a 101 class!
Overall Professor Halling is good. His exams were really lecture based but the good thing about the exams was that it was all multiple choice. If you went to all of his lectures and study the lecture slides then you should be fine. We had 3 exams and one paper. He's a very tough grader on the paper so be very careful with that.
He is nice and he would curves the test grades but he's still a tough grader on the writing assignment.
Professor Mark Halling was a great professor. He cracks jokes during lectures which makes it more engaging. There were 4 papers, and a final. Participation is required though because he would break us up into groups and ask us to answer questions. I would definitely take him again!
Great professor. Dry sense of humor and good lectures, I always enjoyed showing up to class. Sometimes the readings were a little difficult but with some effort and the powerpoints he provides there is no excuse to do badly in his class.
Professor Halling keeps the class interesting with his humor. While exams are lecture-based, attending helps. For study prep, I found Unstuckstudy and the textbook to be very useful alongside the lectures.
Great prof, he's funny and makes lectures entertaining and chill. Was graded on two tests, a short paper, and a final exam, and all tests are multiple choice. There are long readings, but most of the time you can just skim. Overall a chill and easy class.
Amazing professor. Gives a new reading for each class, but he is able to go over the concepts in a way you can understand. Also created a study guide for us to use to study for exams. The exams were simple and straightforward. Doesn't like technology, so you can't use phones or laptops during class
It was an okay class, a lot readings to do tho. Daily quizzes, 3 papers, midterm and final exam mix of mcq and short responses. He also likes to split class intro groups to discuss questions as well. As long as you show up to class (can affect your grade if you don't) and review the review sheet he post should be easy
Genuinely a terrible person, sure he was fine during class but when it comes to grading he is completely unfair and honestly rude to communicate with. I would not recommend this professor, wasted so much time trying to do good in his class or for him to grade my essays horribly when they were good. He doesn't listen and is overall just bad
Incredibly unprofessional and petty in emails. If you're taking this as an online course be ready for h-e-ll. If you want to do good in this class be ready to suck up to him to feed his major ego. He was disrespectful in class and would often post incorrect information. Do not choose him
Hes just a bully
He deserves to be reported and removed as a professor
Beware he grades unfairly
Professor Halling is horrible with technology and he will annoy everyone about it. He would always forget to post assignments, even for the final exam he repeated if mid way and erased all prior work without providing extra time. Horrible professor
I warn you guys do not take because you will not have an enjoyable experience
Honestly worst professor I think I've ever had, he hides behind a good guy face but he is a terrible person
Grades incredibly unfair
SO UNFAIR AND STUPID GRADING
I did good in his class but it drained me mentally and physically. He grades very bad and I've seen and heard horrible stories. He is inappropriate with students and makes them uncomfortable. Would not recommended at all. Take other professors like Smiley. Beware and stay AWAY
Bottom tier professor, pick anyone else
The semester just ended for our SOC 224 class and I'm just going to say this is the worst class ever. I have seen many reviews saying he's lost it this year which I believe tramps all the positive reviews from before. I agree with everyone before and highly don't suggest him. Take anyone better. Incredibly unprofessional and rude
Worst teacher ever
WORST PROFESSOR EVER
Very rude, mean and discourgaing
rudest most inconsierate professor ever, do not take
Disrespectful and unprofessional in class
His class is dragged on for longer that it is supposed to. he doesn't respect class time and goes 40 minutes over lecture time and forces everyone to be there for attendance
Grades unfairly
He does not know what he talks about during class, i swear he makes up information as he goes.
His classes were super boring and terrible. Very draining and he would yell at students and degrade them publicly in class.
Impossible to talk to and incredibly rude in all terms of the world. Worst professor in the sociology department. beware
I don't know how I got an A+ in his class but it was okay. The material was understandable and doable but this was by no reason from his doing. He is the worst professor I have encountered and discourage anyone from taking his class sessions. Save that mental strength and go pick John Smiley.
His lectures are very dense and boring. The assignments are long and he grades VERY HARSH. I wish I took a diff teacher. glad its over lollll
Bad just BADDDDD
The class was fine, but the professor makes inappropriate comments during class. There are better professors like John Young you could take
Horrible professor. Do not take him
I have no words but he is just terrible. LOLLL I felt like I was losing my mind at least 56759 times in his class. There are other more qualified and enjoyable professors. Save yourself the headache.
I had him a year ago. We have three exams worth 90%(not sure if I remember this right). Most of the time, we just talked. The lecture has a lot of students. The test are based on lectures but you can answer many questions with common sense. He didn't come for the final exam and gave us a A+ for it(He forgot there was a exam lol).
When I first looked at his rating being so low, I was a bit scared, but when I actually took the class, I saw that he was actually a really nice professor. He only grades based on three exams, mid-term: 30%, mid-term: 30%, and final: 40%. Anyways, pretty sure someone failed and just bot 1 stared him, which sucks b/c he's really nice.
I don't trust these false positive reviews. Professor halling does not know what he's talking about. He is CARELESS and FORGETFUL and inconsistent with his words. You will be kissing his being in order to do well in the course and at the end of the day it's not even worth it.
This writing class made me feel so bad anbout myself each day….really not worth the headache. Clear warning to not take him and if you do really need to act like a fool like your life depends on it. Hands down, most inconsiderate soc teacher at hunter.
Idk about his other courses but SOC101 was fairly easy. The exams were 100% of the final grade, which sounds daunting, but he's pretty clear on what will be on the exams. I skipped class a lot and I would just search up the terms he posts on test review before exams. He curves them as well. His lectures are pretty interesting and he's articulate.
Very bad at responding to emails. He laughs at students who ask questions in class and makes you feel so bad. He does not grade fairly and will find any reason to take off points….meanwhile he doesn't teach one bit
THis professor is so slow at responding to emails. hes an established professor not an adjunct so he has a cushy position now, i hear from many former students taht he is just cruising and does not want to put in effort. I dont think i did well even though i followed the rubrics and requirements exactly i will be talking to the dean about this prof
