He is a jerk, in my opinion. But his class is not too bad. Read the book, study the notes. Go to class. You will do fine, you just have to get over that he is a jerk. Although, the class was at 7:30 and no one fell asleep.
Dr. Hatala's class is very interesting and he adds a lot of humor to make some of the dry information less boring. However, personality wise he is a jerk. You also have no idea what your grade in the class is until finals and if you go to his office to ask, he will tell you he does not know. I would not recommened taking him for any class.
The material was ridiculously easy, but he hates giving As and will do his best to make sure you don't get one. No matter how well you know the material, the tests are confusing. Great guy though. His humor made class worth going to.
I dont think dr.Hatala is a jerk! He is a funny guy and makes the class interesting! Also he will help you if you go and ask him for help.Psyc 266 is a boring class and it was at 7:30, however i didnt miss class once, so i would definitely recommend taking him!
Hatala is an awesome teacher. He's funny, and has a lot of personal stories to help you understand the concepts. I had him at 7:30am and nobody ever fell asleep, and he usually let us out of class early. He is helpful and very knowledgeable about the subject. Great guy

He makes class really interesting and talks about the Simpsons and weed a lot. I really liked the class but the only grades are tests and a research paper. I haven't gotten my paper back yet but only 2 people got A's on the first test!!! Seriously??? He hates giving out A's so I hate him!
Exp psych was very boring but he somehow made class interesting. I had him at 7:30 in the morning and he allowed the whole class to go to the 9:00 class. So i didnt ever wake up to go to the 7:30 class. He likes to talk about sex in class a lot and hes pretty funny. He doesnt like it people are late. He will ask you to leave--FYI!
The class is pretty good, considering it's a 7:30 class. Kind of a smartass, but still a good guy. His tests are really hard. Even if you think you did well, you probably didn't. I had a 4.0 GPA going in and I think he has destroyed it for me.
I thought he was a rude, sarcastic jerk. The tests are way too difficult and it is hard to do well on them. The grades the papers very harshly as well. First B since coming to Truman 3 years ago.
He was by far the worst professor I've ever had, but if you're good looking girl and like to flirt and suck up then you'll probably get a B (He doesn't give A's). His tests are ridiculus and he grades his papers on how well he likes you. In fact, he will tell you that in class himeself. I honestly think I'm more stupid having taken his class.

I'll preface this by saying that I was in his JINS class and that I know nothing about how he handles psych. That said, I found Hatala to be a pretty good prof, especially for making a 3-hour night class seem less like the unholy eternity it is. This was the Civil War JINS class, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a JINS class to take.
He made a lot of boring information interesting. Hates late people, likes participation. He usually lets class out early. Tests are hard, but he's available to talk to you. If you can't deal with his sarcasm, change sections. I had this class at 7.30 and loved it.
Dr. Hatala is a really funny guy. He talks about cool studies to make the material more interesting. The tests are medium hard. I read the book and studied with a friend and got an A. Just show up to class and read and you will do fine.
I had him in the spring and at the end of the semester he refused to talk to us about our grades or final papers until the fall!! What an ass!! He also has this weird quirck about coming late, if you come in late after class has already started you lose points even though attendance is not required. He'd rather you not show up for class at all th
Probably one of the best classes I've taken at Truman so far. I don't think I ever skipped a class: the lectures were very interesting considering the subject matter, and if you enjoy sarcastic humor, then you'll be entertained for the duration of class as well. The tests were easy, as was the paper.
Great professor, very entertaining, has lots of stories and examples to share. Will try to help you understand something if you don't. Very sarcastic, but you have to take everything he says with a sense of humor. Definitely made a boring subject interesting.
Dr. Hatala was awesome! He was my Truman Week professor and was trying to help out our whole class all the time whether it had to do with psychology or not. I loved going to class, and although I got a B, I still enjoyed his class thoroughly.
He lectures (states his opinions), but his tests are not over the lectures they are over the book. But he never follows the book. I found that his class is based a lot on his own opinion. He jokes about smoking weed and wants to be everyones friends. I also do not think he treats female students right. He does not like it if you disagree with hi
H-bomb was probably the most interesting professor I had this semester. I loved his experimental psych class. Tests are absolute killers, KNOW YOUR VOCAB! But there's plenty of extra credit opportunities so take advantage of those! If you're having trouble in class then go talk to him during his office hours. He will definitely try to help you out!
Dr. Hatala is the most interesting professor I have ever had. I did well in the class, but I know many others struggled. There are only a couple of tests. They can be slightly difficult. Lecture, while not mandatory, is extremely interesting. For experimental psychology, Hatala manages to make the content extremely interesting.
He is HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read the book.
Instructor is hilarious and makes everything discussed interesting. Provides a lot of good examples while teaching a new topic.
Dr. Hatala is a jerk and knows he's a jerk. It's pretty difficult to do well. You will do better if you are one of his "favorites" so being a kiss-ass isn't a bad idea. But don't be an obvious kiss-ass. I would just avoid him. It's simpler that way.
He is really funny and entertaining...until you spend hours studying for a test only to get a C because half the questions had two answers that were equally good. A lot of the right answers are based on his opinion. I would avoid this class in general unless you have to take it for your major
Funny and relatively interesting. Very smart, and wow does he know it. Cocky and sometimes an ass. Will ask your weight and make graphs with it (kind of offensive). Don't be sick, cause he wont cut you any slack if you are. Kissing ass probably helps. Tests have multiple right answers. STUDY like crazy if you want C's. All this means is AVOID!
Very interesting teacher, one of my favorites so far. He is not easy at all but as long as you study a ton you should be alright i would recommend him. Yes he is an jerk, but he is a hilarious jerk.
Hatala has been my favorite professor so far. He's hilarious and a great guy. Don't take him or his class too seriously (he even says this!) and you'll have a great time. If you actually read the book, pay attention in class, and study a few days ahead of the test, you'll be perfectly fine.
I loved Hatala!!!! He's funny and blunt. It was worth waking up early in the morning. I would take any of the classes that he teaches!!! Reading the chapters and coming to class is important, but he makes it interesting. There's also extra credit opportunities.
Dr. Hatala was one of my favorite professors at Truman. He's quite the ass and super cocky, but an excellent teacher and hilarious guy. He also seemed to really care about students. If I could have taken courses exclusively from him and Dr. Rutter, I would have been totally thrilled. Also, he's quite the looker :)
Dr. Hatala made this otherwise boring class interesting and worth going to regularly. He's super sarcastic and really funny, and he genuinely cares about his students. His tests aren't that bad as long as you go to class and skim the book. Definitely take this class, he's one of my favorite professors here at Truman!
Manages to make uninteresting material engaging. Somewhat difficult tests, but not impossible if you read the book. I think people find him somewhat abrasive because he's so openly liberal, but you're in college. You shouldn't be surprised when someone who stayed in school till they were 30 likes to base their beliefs on facts.
I am so glad I had Dr. Hatala for Experimental. He made me work for an A, which just makes me feel like I learned that much more. If you really study the book and attend class regularly his class is manageable. He also offers unlimited extra credit, which many find helpful. He really expresses interest in his students, which is refreshing.
Awesome guy! The material itself is really dull, but he spices it up so that it's really easy to pay attention. He really wants you to learn. Take Hatala, you won't regret it. #YOLO [His life motto.]
I love Dr. Hatala. Applied Psych was super easy. All the tests are online. There's a quiz every week but as long as you read the book it's easy and it's open book the last 5 mins. You can also argue answers that you think are right. You can earn an unlimited amount of extra credit. As long as you participate in the discussion it's an EASY A. Love!
Experimental Psychology felt like a weeder course in a way. The tests were very difficult. I think Dr. Hatala wants to set a high standard for future Psych courses, so he pushes you to learn difficult concepts. Lectures are extremely engaging and beyond interesting. I highly recommend him, but go into it with your big boy/girl pants.
Dr. Hatala was really good at making dull topics more fun and interesting. Tests are difficult, but if you read the book and pay attention/take notes in class, you're pretty well off. Make sure you go to class because attendance/participation are incredibly important. Extra credit is unlimited, so that's great.
Hatala is a great teacher! But you have to work hard for an A. Got Bs & Cs on tests, but to get an A: go to class/participate, DO AS MUCH EXTRA CREDIT AS YOU CAN (he offers unlimited), & FOLLOW DIRECTIONS FOR THE PAPER! SERIOUSLY. He'll give Ds for just 1 mistake. But he makes lecture interesting & is always available for help! Overall a good prof.
One of the best teachers I had first semester of college. If you go to class and do the work, and study the book (the test will deal with info from the book) and you'll do fine. There is a research paper you work on all semester but it's five pages so relatively easy. Class isn't easy but it's not hard, just study the material and you'll do fine
Hatala is interesting, but unable to teach cognitive science in depth. All the core work is from an entry level book, and after that we watch/discuss movies and then read about scifi stuff. His essay tests only vaguely relate to cognitive science and he wants a story rather than real analysis even though this is a technical field. I learned nothing
He's interesting, but I feel like nothing he says in class is on the test.
Very interesting class even with boring content... brags about how the average grade in his class is a C which is super annoying. Tests are pretty hard
Hatala is an amazing professor. He is a brilliant man and has passion for his field. Attend class, go to his or his TAs office hours, and do not procrastinate on the final paper - the class is simple, but not easy. He definitely makes Experimental Psych - a normally boring class - interesting, fun, and engaging.
Dr. Hatala is a GREAT professor. He is definitely my favorite professor I have had so far at Truman. His tests are pretty difficult though, you have to actually read the book to get even a B. His classes are always entertaining even though experimental psychology can be a drag. He is so funny! Take him for experiment psych!!
Gets off topic so much. Super funny. take him! quizlet all the vocab before each test and you will do well and do his study guides. 3 test, one novel spread out over 4 months. class is not for attendance but you need to go
Mark Hatala is an eccentric man with an interesting way of presenting information in class. Attending daily will NOT ensure a good grade. Reading the book, understanding terms, as well as learning the little statistics you learn in the last chapter is essential. He grades papers with an iron fist. If you make one error, you'll be penalized harshly
Lectures are very entertaining; I loved going to class (which I recommend doing). Kind & brilliant man; gives lots of life advice. As far as the class goes, I took book notes regularly & did well on his tests. Friends who did just notecards didn't do as well. You write a paper all semester which is taken very seriously; DON'T blow it off.
I would say he is a pretty easy grader and if you read before each quiz then you should do okay. The tests are take home. He doesn't care if they're well written but as long as you entertained him while reading it you will do well on those (he likes cat stories) During class, you don't talk about material you are learning but rather his interests.
Dr. Hatala is funny. Your grade is essentially composed of three things: three tests and one essay although next semester he is adding weekly quizzes. To do well: go to class and take notes, read the textbook, it is dry but you have no hope of acing the test without it, write a good paper, do the unlimited extra credit it will save your grade.
Arrogant. Acts as though he knows everything. Tests and paper grading were tough. No final.
Mark is a neato professor! He tries to make the subject matter more interesting, however, his lectures can be confusing and don't usually help with the online tests, which are based off the book. These online chapter quizzes are confusing and can definitely drag your grade down. There are tons of helpful extra credit opportunities, though!
Overall experimental psychology isn't a hard class, but Dr. Hatala made it harder than it needed to be. At face value, the tests seem easy, but it was a shocker when you would get them back with a 'C' written on them. Weekly quizzes discussed information straight from the book, and were surprisingly difficult. Not my favorite class, or professor.
Hatala is a funny person, but not a very good professor. There are quizzes over every chapter that can be very difficult and easily sink your grade.
Hatala is a great lecturer which is what his classes are. He's funny and great to listen to. There is a lot of online stuff and you have to keep up with the homework to get a good grade. His tests are sometimes tricky and the online quizzes are open book but more difficult than you would expect.
While Hatala's lectures were usually entertaining and somewhat helpful, the book and weekly quizzes helped prepare me for test far more than the lectures. It's worth your time to just read the chapters. Hatala is very friendly and funny, but it seemed he only lectured on the easier topics of the class.
The material of this class was dry but Hatala made the lectures entertaining. It's a hybrid class so you have online days every Friday. You can do unlimited extra credit by participating in the psychology studies seniors are doing for their capstones and no comprehensive final!
Dr. Hatala's probably the quirkiest professor I've had at Truman. He really tries to make the class fun because he knows how dry the material is. There're sets of quizzes you have to take over videos, experiements, and articles, along with three tests. The tests are over the textbook mostly, with some stuff from his lectures. That's pretty much it.
easy professor for exp psych, online quizzes, very easy
Dr. Hatala is one of the best Psychology professors at Truman. He makes his class challenging, but attainable. He is funny and he genuinely cares about his students (You just have to see through his humor and sarcasm). It's helpful to read the book and do the quizzes early. And you'll get full participation points if you ask a few questions!
Dr. Hatala was a very great psychology teacher. He made himself available, approachable, produced engaging lectures, and did an excellent job teaching the material. His exams and quizzes can be tricky because they are application questions, but using the book and making flashcards helps a lot. Hatala made it easy to succeed.
He may not be the best lecturer and his handwriting isn't the best, but the way he sets up the half online half lecture classroom makes it pretty easy to succeed. Online quizzes and test material come straight from the book. Read the book and take notes and you will be fine. There were a total of 6 tests, and the final wasn't cumulative.
Hatala was one of my favorite professors. He was funny, made class entertaining, and really cares about his students. It's half online, half in class, and you get to have one day off a week as an online day. He's open to talking about something you don't understand or need more clarification. I would really recommend him.
Everything (I mean EVERYTHING) except for two projects is multiple choice. All quizzes are online; textbook is free. Lectures are fun to go to (hes a funny guy), but not necessary. Easy but fun class. He puts lectures on the textbook online, so you can listen to those instead of read the book if youre an audio learner (super helpful). Fun class!
This class was interesting we read 4 books and I felt like I didn't learn anything. As long as you read you should be fine. The tests were all take home and as long as you put the effort in you would do well. I recommend. there was a quiz in every class period, but it was a once a week class.
While Dr. Hatala is very funny, do not let this be the reason you take his class. In my experience, he spent much of the class off topic and I didn't take much away from the lecture. You will have to depend heavily on the book for the bulk of the semester.
Dr. Hatala is a smart and kindhearted professor. He is passionate about what he does. Hopefully you have good hearing though because his voice does tend to drift off sometimes and it's hard to hear him. One day of the week is an online day so you're only in class 2 of 3 days. The tests are easy if you study hard for them. He's so interesting!
He makes his lectures fun to listen to. Most people think it can be hard but for me, I showed up to every class but two, waited til the week before the to start unit homework(DO NOT recommend), and watched his videos online. I got a B on about everything I did but put in a lot of work with extra credit and ended with an A. He cares about students.
Very friendly and stylish pro. Always try to make a class not boring! Use of free online E-book. Just memorize a lot PHY terms for quizzes and exams!
Mark has a dry but great sense of humour, I didn't mind walking to his class! Fridays were "online days" aka time to do homework and not have to be in class. Although his lectures weren't SUPER helpful to the test, if you go over the book his wild examples do keep things relevant.
The lectures were a waste of time. They arent well prepared and he talks about himself. Hes pretty lazy. Theres lots of online homework, and the tests are hard. He doesnt explain the homework much so you kind of have to figure it out for yourself. if you can, take this course online in the summer to save you from a unnecessary C.
I wouldn't recommend taking Mark Hatala for class. Some of the things he says are concerning. He said "I had a 3.1 in college and recieved 2 D's on my transcript. I didn't care about my grades so what makes you think I care about yours?" This is an absolute inconsiderate statement given the fact that I pay out of pocket for my education.
Hatala is an entertaining lecturer, and a smart guy, but I struggled in this class because his lectures were very chaotic and he wasn't very good at teaching. Everything I learned came from reading the book. Also, not willing to help struggling students. Mostly online work with lectures over the book, and three big tests over the book. Good luck
Hatala makes a boring class fun. I actually looked forward to his lectures because he's just so funny. You do a lot of the learning and assignments on your own. The class is quite a challenge but not impossible. Just pace yourself .
Dr. Hatala has the most engaging/interesting lectures, but are not helpful when prepping for exams. This is a hybrid class where all quizzes/homework are completed online and there's a lot of them; this means one day of class will be an "online day". There are so many opportunities for extra credit!!
Hatala is a really good professor with a lot of personality. He's kind, eccentric, and enjoys getting to know students just about as much as he likes talking about his own life experiences. There is usually a lot of homework, but as long as you stay on top of things and attend lectures you'll be prepared enough for the tests.
OMG if you take PSYC 166 for any reason take Hatala and DO NOT TAKE Ramsey I have literally heard horror stories of her. Whenever one of my friends who are psych majors asked my about Hatala I have nothing but good to say about him. Take his asynchronous class because its just discussion boards and quizlet quizzes. Easy A if you do the bare minimum
Hatala was kind of all over the place. Meetings were not mandatory, but you do get a participation grade so try not to miss too much. The zooms also weren't lectures. Lectures were posted on blackboard, zooms were just discussion times. Pretty easy grader on the one paper, but I found the quizzes tricky even though you could use your book and notes
Dr. Hatala's class was difficult. It was fine at first, but as it got harder I tried to reach out and ask questions. He NEVER answered my emails. Ever. Only after I tried to get some credit back on a quiz where I missed a negative in a math problem he replied. And his response was "if only we could redo our mistakes" :/ Unkind, rude, unhelpful.
I loved Hatalas class! Hist and Systems was very fast paced but Hatala just wanted his students to do the work and be done. 10/10!
If you are naturally gifted in the field of experimental psych then i recommend taking this class. Otherwise, 0/10 recommend taking this class, with this teacher at least.
Such a fun guy. Caring and very funny. His intro class was so easy and enjoyable that you'll learn everything through premade vids for literally everything you need to know. i was able to do great just by watching the videos a day or 2 before the tests. Love him. knows my name still a year later and talks to me whenever he sees me. Stan prof Hatala
The subject matter of the class is interesting. 15 quizzes, 2 papers, and 7 DB posts with responses. The only negative is that even though he said we could work self-paced, he still didn't give out full participation points if udidn't have the expected work done by the last week. You could only earn 50/100 points if you waited until the last week.
This class was very boring and a bit difficult. LOTS of reading if you want a good grade in the course.
