I took all of Higbee's classes and LOVED every one of them. He was always available to you and was very passionate about his content.
I really liked his class..his discussions were interesting and i felt very comfortable speaking out in his class
Prof. Higbee is awesome! I took three classes with him. He loves his subject and he is very thorough. If you enjoy sitting and discussing books, he's your guy
He's so unfair in his grading techniques... He sucks
excellent discussions where you can feel comfortable joining in
He is so smart and interesting. He tells a great story and leads wonderful discussions. I loved his classes!
i have failed history twice, until i took mark higbee, i got an A My first A in history EVER. his syllabus included underrepresnted populations usually missing from history class. he is dynamic and interesting. i really learned a lot! supportive!
prof higbee defines what a good teacher is. clear on his lectures and very passonate about what he teaches. also he is willing to help you out if you need it. pay attention in class and review the text and youll be good
He doesnt make himself very available or reach out to the students. His assignments are so ambiguous and random.
Do not take this teacher. I love the civil war and he has totally ruined this subject for me. First off we start with slavery then we zoom past a lot of material and go to 1 and a half years into the civil war! We talk about one battle then we zoomed again into reconstruction. Trust me, dont tske it
Do not take this teacher! He does not teach the class very well jumping around from one thing to the other. His required readings are pathetic and the essays are suppossed to be about hwo you feel on the subject as long as you agree with him.
THIS PROFESSOR IS HORRIBLE DO NOT TAKE HIM! He rambles on about nothing during lecture, then he tests you on all these things he never even mentioned. Then he lied about his teacher evaluations and tried to not give them to our class because he is HORRIBLE.
Not helpful, you cant ask him questions because he makes you feel dumb. I asked him a question about the test, so he hands me a syllabus, cause i didnt understand something in the text and he told me i should know whats on the tests. Do Not Take this guy hopefully no one does and he loses hi job.
I don't know what prof the others had. I found him helpful and enjoyed class discussions a lot. Likes to focus on the situations behind events, and on things usually not covered in standard classes. Expresses opinions, but calls them that and lets you have yours, doesn't test on them. overall good
Dr. Higbee does not have time for students who don't do the readings. If you come to class regularly and are always prepared you will get a lot our of it. I am an education major and Dr. Higbee has helped me find support materials for things I want to teach. He is one of the best profs I've had.
Very Unhelpful. Based your grade off three tests and an essay. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!
Your grade is based off 4 tests and a paper and he's unclear about what will be on them. Lectures are boring, you need the book or you won't survive. Nice guy, not a good prof.
mark higbee has absolutely zero tolerance for a few things thoise are sleeping in class, not doing the reading, not paying attention in class, and talking in class. if you sleep, talk, or have obivously not read the material your gonna have a tough time. these epopel who gave him a bad review obivously didn't put forth the effort for 100 level
He gives professors a bad name. The single worst professor EMU has produced. Totally unclear with his paper assignments. Grades are purely based on how he feels about you or that day. Totally arrogant and self absorbed. He ruined a very interesting topic, though he did give a good selection of books to read. Stay away from this class
You need tough skin to work with Higbee, he can come off intimidating. His text were very interesting, but the lectures were unfullfilling, he jumps around quite a bit.He is also easily distracted. His essay questions are interesting and challenging. Do the work and stay on his good side you will be fine.
I received an A in the class and was engaged in both the readings and the discussion.I never slept and always put my best foot forward. Higbee was very rude and unapproachable. If you try, you will do OK, but he's jerk. Grading is extrememly unclear and his lectures lack connection to the text.Bad teacher and poor educator.Stifles student interest.
Knew a lot of history, and would spew statistics endlessly in class. None of his stories related to the test material. He was pretty mean to all but a couple brown nosing students. Still a passable class though, dispite his efforts to fail as many students as possible.
This class was very interesting and Professor Higbee was very clear and helpful. He gives a lot of background on History--beyond the events. A lot of comments have been made on this guy and I am not sure that they are fair. As long as you do your part as a student--do the reading, come to class, ask questions and stay awake--the class is a breeze.
He took an interesting topic and ruined it. His grading is unclear, and even if you put forth the effort by coming to class and reading the assigned texts he just grades you on what he feels that day. He is intimidating, and rude to students. He acts like he appreciates comments made in class but he would often disagree in an impolite way. He g
Only course were I thought about appealing for my tuition back. Received a good grade but slept through his useless classes. Horrible teacher. He was unprepared, rude, and taught unfactual information. We never learned about the Civil War: learning was based on four books loosely related to the Civil War. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! Should be fired.
absolutely the worst professor I've ever had. No rubric, no clear guidlines, weeds out the people that don't agree with his extreme leftist ideology. Avoid him.

The worst professor I have ever encountered! RUDE! If you don't brown nose forget about getting a good grade. If he doesn't like you redo redo redo! we didn't have one intelligent lecture. WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY, runied my GPA
dr higbee is a great teacher. hes a cool guy and very knowing aobut what he yeaches. he ha a few clear cut rules and if you break them he can be a dick. he treats you like an adult and expects you to take his class seriously and address it as such. As long as you dont come into class late, sleep, or talk youll be fine
He knows what he's talking about, but has the capacity to be very rude and condescending. He INSISTS on being correct, and would take away from class discussion by disagreeing with the other professor in the class! Grades WAY harder than Professor Lucy in this dual-subject class, and makes the class worth dreading, even if you do well in the class.
Mark Higbee tries to get students to think outside the box. If you are looking for a classroom in which to listen to a lecture, don't sign up for his. If you are interested in getting outside a textbook and into dialogue, take him. I loved his class. Most people who don't can't write an academic paper.
This guy is by far the rudest professor I've ever had. As long as you are very liberal or don'tmind having you opinions dismissed this class is alright. If your opinion differs from his he'll ridicule you until you never want to talk in class. If you can't write a GREAT essay don't take this class
He is a nice guy, but likes to make you believe what he thinks. He dueled with Robin Lucy for this class and always would interupt her so she never got a word in. Ridicules when grading so be ready to take a lot of critisism from him. Made me feel badly sometimes, too. I don't recommend him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! He is horrible and very unclear with what he wants in his papers! He doesnt give you a rubric and barely reads the papers and gives you a D... this man should be fired!
Class is pretty straight forward. Only 3 exams and one paper. Make sure you go to class and take good notes because every question covered on the exams will come from lecture. Dont even need to buy the book. If you dont go to class and only read the book you will fail so make sure you take goood notes.
Hey, did you know that he doesn't like Eastern's adminstration and can't stand teaching in Pray-Harrold? He spend seven or eight minutes a class complaining about those two subjects. We freaking get it already.
he likes to prove students wrong, and is a tough grader.
Knowledgable and passionate about his subject. If you study the book and his listen to his lectures, you will do fine on the tests. He tried to make things fun and interesting, and offered A LOT of extra credit. I see where people are comming from about his rudeness, but I think it's really being exaggerated here.
The guy is not that bad of a teacher. He is although, rude and insensitive toward certain "wars." He lets his opinions out sometimes, which some students might find offensive or inappropriate. You have to read and he grades solely on tests and one writing assignment.
class was a joke. lecture and readings never linked. doesn't answer students questions. when he does, he gives long elaborate answers that don't pertain to the question. on papers, make sure you write down exactly what he wants to hear; too opinionated and rude; spends too much class time complaining about emu, pray harrold, and american ignorance
I find his sense of humor to be a bit dry and overdone. He spends a lot of time comparing the war in Iraq to other wars. he is very enthusiastic about history but not very clear as to what information will be on the exams. Reading the text is a must to pass his class.
Seriously, I can't believe the whiny-ness of alot of the previous posters. Higbee is a fantastic teacher who forces you to think and earn your education. I think that most of the negative comments come from tools too busy making out with their fellow frat brothers rather than studying and girls who spent too much time text messaging during class.
Funny, clear, and supportive. His use of Reacting in the Past games makes the class a lot of fun, and the work load is light.
This class was the worst. Hard time focusing on his lectures which were rather unclear and off into space. His exams are always essay so make sure you know exactly what he wants to hear or he'll fail you. Best of luck with him
He's really funny and despite not wanting to take this class, it became one of my favorites. He made the students interested, and he's pretty funny. He's a cool guy, worth taking a class with.
Must pay attention and participate to do well. Not willing to work or read? Don't bother! Have concerns? Stop by his office, he loves to chat with engaged students. I went from feeling average about history to taking all of his courses - he's fair.
Just the worst. He is opinionated and unwilling to hear any ideas that don’t match his. He gives you the feeling that you're just a stupid student. Whats with the role-playing ? It can be fun, but isn't educational. He teaches like his students are still in high school. Everything is spooned out. Lectures seemed unorganized and overly basic. H
He is aweful. He is a very mean spirited person and I would not recommend him to my worst enemy. Any questions?
Get real people ... this guy gives credit where credit's due! Come to class, participate, do the work, get an A. There weren't even any exams. There were some short papers and "reacting to the past" history reenactments that students are req'red to partake of in class, but no dates to memorize!!! Good students get good grades and so on ...
Let's get this out of the way right now: Higbee can be kind of a jerk. If you have thick skin and can deal with opinionated people, you will have a rewarding experience. This is not a 'memorization" class. This is a participation class. Do your best in that regard, be prepared, and you will do well. Screw around and he's not gonna like you.
This isn't a history class, he isn't a history teacher. Its fun and games time. If you want an education take someone else. It is obvious he doesn't know how to teach, so he plays games instead...
This Teacher is the worst!! Unless you like acting in ridiculous plays all semester and not having your opinion given a damn go ahead and take this class. He is mean and failed my paper because it was opinionated he dropped my A down to a C- because of it.
Professor is not so nice to those who hold option other than his own. Spent way too much time on non-history stuff. Attended a play and a poetry lecture totally unrelated to subject. Paying an big bucks for a graduate degree, to only have my time and money wasted on non-subject matters. Vinyard & Citino much better professors at EMU History dept.
This professor has such a powerful, all-consuming presence, he gets rated for classes that he has never even taught! Most students like how he asks us to be able to explain our ideas (a useful skill), but some, including those who don't know what class they were in, confuse their inability to make sense with Higbee insisting he's always right.
Great class, great prof, lots of fun, everybody had a ball and the air conditioning even worked so he wasn't as hot as usual!
Dr. Higbee is cool. No tests. A lot of reading. 4 papers. He is not opinionated, he has a PhD and knows a lot of stuff. Excuse him for not being soft when you are wrong. I have seen him tell people they were wrong, including me, because we were wrong. He is there to teach facts, not to make you feel better about what you THINK you know. He's cool
I loved this class! Participation is a requirement. There are no tests, only games. He assigns roles and you must forget your own opinions and get into the opinions of your character. Being a fairly shy person, it was a bit intimidating at first but it really helped me "break out of my shell" a bit more and you meet a lot of new friends. :)
Higbee is an excellent teacher! His Reacting to the Past method makes class interesting and engaging. The material you study really sticks in your mind. Don't take this class if you're not willing to be dedicated to class or attend. There are no tests, just class participation. One of the most fun, challenging classes I've had at EMU! :)
This professor is quite intelligent and very out spoken. He does not hesitate to let you or anyone know if they are wrong, and does it in a very cold and demeaning manner. He thrives in giving negative criticism. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Any innocent difference from his opinion will most certainly receive a harsh response. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
5 essays. He's a tough grader but he lets you revise. He expects a lot. True, it's a level 300 class but if papers aren't your strong point reconsider taking him. He chooses favorites and if you aren't one he'll put you on the spot and make you feel like a moron. Reacting to the past games are great, but there's only one in this class.
I absolutely LOVE Professor Higbee! Although he is a though professor to begin with, he quickly reveals his other side. If you do the work and follow the rules, he will treat you with respect. If you disrespect him, believe that you will NOT get special treatment.
Very Very Rude. I can't believe how unprofessional he is.
I thought Higbee was a pretty cool guy and hes intelligent. He's funny and keeps class interested. We played a reacting to the past game for this class which made the course easier to understand and more enjoyable. i didn't think he was rude or all that difficult. He could have made expectations a little more clear.
HORRIBLE! Screamed at almost everyone in class. Demeaned most of us. Extremely rude and disrespectful. Lecture was a waste of time. He threatened to grade our notes b/c no one was taking any b/c he had nothing to say. However, very comfortable enviro for going over papers. Take if you need to improve writing. Avoid at all other costs.
This was a good class, with good readings, and he knows his stuff. Work, study, and learn a lot. Good deal! If you a goof off course, not for you. Higbee used one "Reacting to the Past" game and it was fun and a lot of work too. I'll never forget being part of it, or what I learned from it.
Great teacher. I imagine all the bad responses came from lazy under achievers. Reach out, ask questions at least look like you're doing an effort and he will work with you to his fullest. I took the Reacting Class, a lot of research but he is very helpful if you just ASK! Pretty sarcastic as well. Great class, learned alot!
Nice guy and made history a lot of fun. I found the class to be easy and enjoyable.
I work very hard but it always seems like he is purposely unclear to make it harder for you to do the assignment. He answers no questions directly. I asked him how I could improve my assignment then he basically told me to look up essay in the dictionary. USELESS DO NOT TAKE. He seems nice but really he is just being mean with a smile on his face.
I think he decides if he likes you or not before you even open your mouth. some people he is very nice to others he is mean while pretending to be nice. NOT HELPFUL. DON'T TAKE HIM.
What I wish I could say about Higbee the website will not allow me to post. He is very biased against some of his students, and if he dislikes you (which he establishes within the first week) he will avoid helping you. He takes a class with potential to be fun, and kills it! I suggest the course HIST 179, but AVOID Higbee!
I took this class because it sounded really interesting. I have friends with other professors and they love it. My professor is very rude and not helpful at all.
Higbee answers no question directly and just expects you to figure it out for yourself. He doesn't give clear advice or instructions on the "games" and gets upset when you go out of character to ask him something and has no sense of time whatsoever. The essays were super easy but you have to present them a lot. This class isn't for everyone.
I asked for assistance from him by asking for feedback about my 2 prepared statements and his response was "This is OK. We will see if you fully understand your points tonight." That was the only feedback provided. He is full of himself and consistently puts his students original thoughts down. He is not an educator he is rude. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
He's not a bad teacher, he is however, often times quite abrasive, rude, aggressive, and is not often pleasant to be around. Also, no talking in class ever.
He's sarcastic in a good way. Knows and cares passionately about his subject. Best professor ever. Only stupid people would dislike him.
From what I can tell, he is happiest when he's funniest, which can often be at the expense of other people. But wait, there's more! Want your assignments explained? Too bad! Want your questions answered? Oh well. Oh and also, I have an IQ of 143. I get 100%. With him? B's. Why? He doesn't really say. It's hard to get A's without instructions.
Professor Higbee is very knowledgeable in History, but as an educator he is very opinionated toward students and can be abrasive. His class is very interactive and you learn a lot, but when it comes to assignments he is very particular in grading and does not give good feedback. His sarcasm makes it difficult to know what and when things are due.
WORST professor at EMU hands down! He is rude and will target certain students. You are not allowed to have an opinion because Higbee thinks he is the all knowing God of history and that his view is right and anyone else's that is different is wrong. He doesn't give structure to the course at all, though he does let you rewrite papers.
Higbee is really knowledegable about history and it shows. He lets you use just about any U.S. history textbook and his required texts only cost $12. Gives very vague instructions on papers, though. As long as you show interest in history and aren't put off by his humor, he's a really interesting teacher with a fun class if you put your work in.
He has an interesting sense of humor and expects you to laugh. He definitely has favorites, so try to get on his good side. He grades pretty easily. He does not give clear instructions for assignments though. The game at the end of the semester is not too bad, but it is confusing at first.
If you show up and turn in the papers you will do fine. We did not have a final exam but did have to read a book and write 3 papers. your end grade is based on a roleplay game, I would definitely suggest choosing a character that you have prior knowledge of. Get ready to do some speeches.
Briefly put: Higbee was distracted often. These distractions left me to take almost nothing away from the class. The books he assigned did all of the teaching, most of which were good texts. Lastly, he was horrendously disorganized. It's basically a book club. The course: 5 Books, 2 Essays, 1 RTTP Game (Speeches as civil rights characters).
He's not rude; he's super funny! Took 2 classes with him, and loved both! Books are cheap. I loved the role-playing games! Little work, super easy A. Highly recommended!
Okay listen I'm in one of his classes right now and I do not recommend it at all. Not to sound mean, but he doesn't sound like he knows what he is talking about. I mean he's nice I suppose, but I don't recommend. Also, he makes "jokes" that no one understands.
I hated him at first, then he grew on me. Easy A. Just do his CPA method and have a sense of humor. If you don't come to class to have fun and discuss what you read, you'll hate it. No big papers, and no big tests. He does have a wacky sense of humor, but knows his stuff and makes you think. He is extremely liberal and opinionated. Cusses a lot.
Michigan History was a great class. Dr. Higbee is a unique character that maybe an acquired taste to some. I thought he was funny and very sarcastic and it made for an interesting class. This is the kind of class where you must do the reading and participate in the discussions to pass. The field trip to cemetery was a highlight of the class.
Interactive class discussions are great and he has clear grading criteria for each of the three major assignments. Be sure to actually read the content though.
He is a great professor and I would definitely take him again. The class is lecture heavy and you are graded on 2 papers and a class game. He is a hilarious person and can easily get off track which makes the class period fly by. He is a super understanding professor.
He's a great teacher and gives good feedback. However, since I took HIST 115 during the pandemic, the class mainly consisted of reading books and writing essays on them. There were a total of about 8 essays that I had to write, but most of my papers were a page and a half to put it into perspective. He gave feedback and grades through email.
Mark Higbee was a terrible professor who was uncaring, unprofessional, and rude. Im a great student and still did well in his class but he was a rude person the whole way hated him
He was the most unprofessional and uncaring professor I've ever had. He didn't teach lectures for the first two essays (66.7% of your overall grade), so it was hard to learn. If you don't agree with his opinion, you are penalized. I would not recommend this professor.
We had no zoom classes even though when I signed up it said we would. A few days before the start of the semester, he said we would Zoom meet once for almost all the books, we never did. This was bad for me because I chose this section cuz I knew needed Zoom classes to pass. I was looking forward to talk about the books to better my understanding
I recently sent a review of this professor talking about the Zoom classes, please ignore that review. Although we didn't have Zoom classes. He was still a super helpful teacher
This class was graded entirely based on two papers and The Game (held over Zoom). As long as you meet all the paper requirements and participate in The Game, you'll be fine.
Was way harder than it should have been for a level 100 class. I took HIST 115 and it was harder than almost any college class I took. The instructions and syllabus are very confusing and the instructions on how he wants you to write the essay are poorly laid out and unorganized. I would definitely not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE HIST 115 WITH THIS PROFESSOR. I took this completely online before dropping and the grade was based on 6 papers. This Professor will give you very rude feedback on your papers, he is unprofessional in how he writes his emails and instead of offering to help or recommend resources he basically concluded that college was not for me.
I took his online class and I hugely regret it. You're only graded by 8 essays, and you have to do 100+ pages of reading every week. If your essay is "bad enough" Higbee won't even read and he'll say fix it before you give it to him without actually saying what's wrong with it.
Higbee's papers are ridiculously trivial and that is all he grades off of. He does not actually teach anything in the course. His feedback on papers is extremely rude and does not give constructive criticism. When writing his papers, be super literal because he cannot read between the lines.
This isn't a class, it's 4 books you have to read and write papers on. What should be in these papers? Great question, and one that Higbee refuses to answer. He says he wants a paragraph, but then grades you down for not giving enough detail. You give more detail, and he'll complain about you not addressing some other concept. This class was a joke
The course is made up of 7 essays. Each essay will be about a book, paper, or essay you are assigned. Almost all are on the same topic. You won't be taught a single thing. You are given the syllabus and that's it. Feedback on your work is never constructive. It is as simple as a grade and either "Good job" or "Awful job". Avoid if you can.
I try to give people benefit of the doubt, I really do, but this man is unforgivable. He accused me of being a lazy student & said my paper was boring. Little did he know, I spent hours on every assignment. I dropped the class asap. Take with another prof, if possible. Save yourself stress, tears, & confusion. I have had amazing profs, he is NOT.
Professor is very rude and demeaning in emails. Doesn't provide any help, positive reinforcement or advice. Advise not taking a class with him and if you have to good luck and keep your head up.
Professor is very belittling and mocking In his "corrections" and grades on assignments. Provides no positive reinforcement or help. Makes a lot of assumptions on his students. Even on issues that just need clarification he's is very rude about it.
Very rude in his emails. Grades from 15 CPAs. Thinks you dont do work even if you are a hardworking student as he likes to make assumptions. Never taking him again and never a history class again because of him.
Professor Higbee's class wouldn't be so hard if his grading wasn't so random. If you are too specific or not specific enough he will mark you down. Also, even tho we had the same assignment every week, your grade could drop two or three letters if you're not careful with how you answer each week's chapter write up. Avoid him at all costs.
He doesnt actually teach you anything. He gives you the syllabus with a bunch of dates that you are supposed to finish readings by then complete an essay prompt There were 7 books assigned with the exact same essay assignment for each reading. The books are good reads but there is no dialogue among your peers or the professor to make an experience
I took Professor Higbee for Michigan history 323. The class was graded by 10-14 CPA's, which are paragraph responses that you must complete weekly on the assigned chapters of specific books. Afte a lot of trial and error I learned how to write the CPA's to get high passes. Mark Higbee is harsh and rude on Email but his grading is fair.
Do not take this professor at any costs. He is so rude and disrespectful and demeaning over emails I had to drop the class because my mental health could not take it. Just makes assumptions about you and is mean spirited.
Very nice professor, gives opportunity to better your essays and gives great feedback.
He will just assume what he wants about you and you have to take it in stride. The amount of mistakes he makes in instructions and emails is very high. One slip up and he will call you a bad writer and start docking points off things for no reason. No lectures, no learning. Reading and essays without him ever saying a word. AVOID
Doesn't use Canvas! Assignments are extremely repetitive. All you do is read from books, write a weird paper about it, and email it to him. His feedback is limited and doesn't give too much guidance on what he is actually looking for. I would recommend taking this class with a friend so you can help eachother out if needed. Avoid him if you can.
There is constant writing involved in this course due every week on readings ( the prompt is not hard and only a paragraph is required ) The class was pretty much easy & straightforward. He still gave me high passes on work that he said I couldve done better on/didnt do properly. Unfortunately I missed 3 assignments, but still passed with an A.
Professor Higbee is probably the most offensive professors I have ever had. He continuously talked down to me over email. He also tells you to not have any spelling errors and continues to send emails out with several spelling errors which makes him look bad.
he was extremely condescending and rude any time you would try to email him for clarification. it was unpredictable what your grade would be every single time because you could answer the question given in the weekly essay but ONE word used wrong or incorrectly will make your letter grade drop. i hate him
Professor Higbee is unprofessional. He is extremely passive aggressive in his emails. He assigned interesting material, but that's all the class is. Two books and three essays. He did not contact us the entire semester except at the beginning to send us the syllabus.
Professor Higbee threw a tantrum in class when I had him. He cussed out a kid because they didn't play the role he was assigned the way Higbee wanted him to. He wasted many classes talking about nothing related to what we were learning. The whole class revolved around Frederick Douglas when there is an additional 170 years to discuss.
Some people just want to watch the world burn. Mark Higbee is one of them. If you love being degraded for asking for help, then this is the class for you! Aside from doing quite literally no teaching, Professor Higbee will be sure to speak to you like you are an infant child than cannot even chew your own food. If you respect yourself, avoid him.
I try to empathize with profs and be positive, Im unable to with this one. To be fair it was an online class, he might be fine in person but the class I was in was baaad even tho I was really looking forward to the subject. He just emailed a list of books to read and told us to write essays. No professor engagement or enjoyment to be found here.
I took this profs HIST115 class 3 years ago and am about to graduate, but I still remember the chaos this class was. We read about 5-6 books and wrote essays based on them. Professor Higbee tended to grade based on his mood that day, and was fairly rude in mostly all of his response emails to said grades. Please do not take this prof.
