He is very intimidating when he speaks, and he also has a bit of a dark side in his materials. But overall, I think he was very fair, I got an A and learned a lot!
Likes some people, dislikes others. Uses wrong format for papers, unclear about paper topics. Boring. Thinks he's teaching at a University. Didn't like him, didn't like his class.
Extremely difficult! He views things his way and only his way. I got an A in honors ENG 101 and was getting Cs & Ds on all of his papers. Boring & NOT helpful at all. Had to drop him for the sake of my near perfect GPA. As a transfer student it kills me to have such teachers! DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Yeah, I may have been enrolled in ENG 099 (dumb students class:) But I believe I had a harder course than you ENG 102 individuals in a normal english class. He is a HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!! - DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!!!
Mr. Hoffer is a tough teacher and a very tough grader. I spent many hours on my papers, just to receive a C on it. I ended up with a B in the class, never worked so hard for a B in my life. Take another teacher if possible.
Thinks he is a teacher at a ivy league school, did not pass class, after he told me what to correct on my paper, it seems like he likes to fail students, or he likes to see them fail, not recomended for any student to take his class unless you have a passion to fail or lower your self-esteem.
He's a challenging English teacher, which some of us like, he's very intellectual, but not very sociable. It's hard to get an intelligent discussion going in class because the atmosphere is so stiff.
Doesn't give a clear picture of what he wants in papers...or other assignments
He isn't all that bad, but definitly not helpful
I had a good time in this class, enjoyed most of the books he picked out
I learned a lot.
Is very helpful and takes time out to help you when you ask. Is fun and a good teacher. Makes english a little easier to take when you dont like the subject. I would reconmend his to all.
It's a very fun class because of all the interesting connections he'll make. For Myths and Meanings we studied the obvious, like an interview with Campbell and books on mythology of ancient cultures. But there were also unexpected connections to mythology through things like Mulholland Drive and music videos. Cool class--and GREAT DISCUSSIONS!
The Great ****ing Gatsby for English 102? I read that in the 7th grade.
he's interesting. nice, polite, intuitive, pecise, demanding. your average teacher. he's a good guy.
I've always gotten A's in English, so for me to get a final grade of a B was a bit surprising. But all in all I really liked him. I thought he had really good taste in most everything he had us read. Very nice and very knowledgable.
A very challenging teacher. I enjoyed his reading list. English was never a favorite class of mine but he made it more bearable–I also did quite well. Overall he was a good teacher.
Awsome teacher! Very helpful, understanding, and enthusiastic with his students! He gets an A in my book!
No good. Very poor teacher.

This guy seems like he is an impostor of a professor, sad to say. He looks and acts like one, but his teaching is poor and the clarity of his assignments are misleading. I am just happy he is teaching poetry again this semester he doesn't know wtf he is talking about. Just cause he looks like Where's waldo doesn't mean he's a good teacher.
He is super sweet but his papers are unclear. I am at CSU w/a guy from Hoff's class we are both English majors & are both getting awesome grades where we only got "B"s on Hoffers papers-I got a "C" on one! I do my papers at CSU the night before;his I worked on. His grading is REALLY diff. & it's not bc I got a "B" that I say that. He is picky-VERY!
This instructor was very professional and respectful of students. I learned a lot in his class and had fun doing it. His knowledge is immense and he carefully plans what to teach. Highly recommended.
boring
I think he is good teacher, however you have to work hard and be willing to have an impecable writting. He will tell you his expectations about the course please pay attention to it.
He is a good professor. He is knowledgeable and very helpful and patient to students. He is a bit demanding but it is good if you want to improve your English. Be prepared to read and write a lot. As this is the only way to improve your English. I like to read those articles he picked. I learned a lot in the class. Highly recommend him.
He is challenging, but also helpful. Like as helpful as it can get. if you do the work and go to his office hours and talk to him you'll be fine. And he will put the time to talk to you no matter what.
This instructor is very hard. He will help you and if you put the effort in you'll pass but unless your a English major... good luck on getting an A.
Poor teacher, Not very clear or helpful. Dont recommend you taking him if you wanna pass your english class.
the most boring class ever. somehow the history of hel wasnt the slightest bit interesting. everytime he asked someone tocomment about it or for ideas,he nodded his head and said ok. nothing further, never any smiles or off subject or real life discussions
Very poor teacher. I tested into English 099 and I Haven't written an essay in YEARS. When I would approach him to ask him for help with my essay he would tell me to look at my syllabus. When he "met" with us to "assist" us with our essays we got no actual input. The class was also boring and didnt assist us with our essays in any way what so ever.
his teaching style is very effective he challenges students to think at a deeper intelectual level in classs by asking questions about the material. hes not easy but hes not hard eaither. take him if u actually want to improve your writting and analytical skills.
Mr. Hoffer is a very helpful instructor and teaches an awesome Creative Writing class. I had alot of fun doing his workshops, learned alot because I was totally new to Poetry. Also he was very understanding when i had surgery and couldn't attend a few classes. He gives constructive criticism, but only to help. He's a great teacher!
This is a poor quality instructor and I wish I never took his class, couldn't learn how to write a english paper and he does not work with students to help
Mark... I love you. I had been away from poetry for so long and you definitely made a nice contribution to the re-awakening of that part of me. Your sense of humor is priceless, I will never look at little people the same. I think people must not understand that beneath your fancy English professor facade is an insightful twisted genius.
He is fun, and very intellectual. He does make you work hard and expect from everyone to learn and inprove. I can only say he will give you the grade you deserve as long as you are showing him you are taking his teaching serious. I loved his class. Loved the books he use for his class. Not an average boring teache for sure.
Mr. Hoffer is a very professional Teacher. He will spend time helping you if you are showing that you are trying. He is very short and to the point I believe to make you use your own ideas. He is very available when needed.
Not really difficult once you realize what he actually wants from your work, which you don't usually know until it's nearly to late since he never tells you, the paper outlines he gives out don't give enough information. On top of that the class is very dull. Doesn't really help us without giving an attitude. Doesn't teach us much either...
I love this class. Mr. Hoffer was very helpful. He has a great sense of humor which i love a swell. If you have any problems or questions about a paper, essay, poem or whatever, he is there to help you. I would truly recommend this class to everyone. LOVE IT!
I took Hoffer for 101 and 299, and had to drop his 112 class because of my schedule. He is very creative, super knowledgeable about his courses, and is always approachable. He has a great sense of humor, and his essay prompts always make you think. This is not a sleep through it A, which no English class should be, honestly. He is great!
Mr Hoffer has one of the best teaching styles in my experience. He has a great sense of humor, he's always approachable, and I couldn't recommend him more highly! A definite A+
Classes should not be "easy", Mr Hoffman challenges us to be thinkers, and rightfully so. He's a great teacher, very approachable and has a teaching style that I wish more of my profs from the past had. He's the greatest and I hope to take more of his classes and see more of him. He's gripping and humorous - great combination!
Most interesting class, learned so much from Mr Hoffer. Great class interaction + easy communication + very handsome prof = great class! Highly recommend him. You don't come across intelligence like this very often and nice to have eye candy in class ;-)
Very helpful teacher, if you show your dedication to pass he will help you pass your goal. Do what you need to do on time and you will not be overwhelmed, highly recommend, would continue to take him for more English classes.
He is very knowledgeable, he checks your progress, and expect for your to work on your paper on your own paste. But do not get to comfortable with this ,remember is English it need for your to work. He will help you if you ask.
All these recent people lies, Hoffer is one of the mot difficult teachers on campus, why, well, the only way to get an A is if you actually are good at writing papers, but if your average, you will get no mercy.
Judging from the comment before mine, it's no wonder why that person thought Hoffer was hard. They can't even structure a sentence and have horrible grammar. Hoffer wants student success. He is innovative, available, and sharp. AVC is lucky to have him.
Keeping an open mind will help you, when taking this class. The essay prompts are a bit confusing, but teach you how to critically think. The period between each essay was spaced out, so it doesn't seem like you're writing much. Most essays were opinion based. Recommended for people that will take the class seriously.
I had Mr. Hoffer for poetry and he was great. He explained very well and really was interested in what he was teaching, which is always helpful for the students. The writing prompts were always really creative and made you think. Definitely recommended to anyone who wants to learn!
He is really cool and will allow you to turn your essay in more than once to make it better. He is funny and we watch a lot of movies. we even got pizza once!
I took Hoffer 2012 Spring semester. It was 16 weeks total (ENG 99 & ENG 101). This was an advanced course and you were only able to move on to ENG 101 if you passed ENG 99. I was very unhappy w/ Hoffer I did not learn anything in his ENG 99 & ENG 101. We watched Horror films & he lectured 5-10 minutes 1-2 times. Don't take him if you want to learn!
Awesome teacher and does a great job of teaching new ways to analyze texts differently. i took a 8 week course and i found the class very interesting. Be open minded upon taking this course. He's a very helpful teacher & a great listener. Down to Earth and he respects his students. i loved this class and i love the way he teaches! Def. recommended
Mr. Hoffer is an amazing teacher!! He is easy to get along with and he does not have a problem with cell phones. His work is pretty easy and he has an open mind when he reads your papers. I took his eng 101 and 102. I will try to take him again!!
great teacher, open structured, respectful, interesting and fun. I loved his class because he wants us to learn more than what is written in books he teaches his students how to explore their own minds.
great teacher, open structured, respectful, interesting and fun. I loved his class because he wants us to learn more than what is written in books he teaches his students how to explore their own minds.
Teacher is great, invested, articulate, highly intelligent, and will take the time out of his day to help those who are struggling. Awesome teacher, but you need to put forth the effort in order to get a good grade. Also, he loves scarf juggling and that's what made this class insanely excellent.
Great professor gives feed back on essays and lets you turn them in a second time for a better grade uses the books so i would highly recommend that you read before class
Absolutely brilliant! Always looked forward to coming to class. Has an unusual approach to literature but still makes you really challenge yourself. Worth it 100%
The class was highly insightful. Professor Hoffer shows "dark" films and assigns reading and basically lets you write papers about ANY theme you can find and apply in a thesis statement. And class discussions/group work is AMAZINGLY helpful, but you have to do the reading in order to get the full experience. It's not easy, but this is college.
He is an excellent instructor , gives a lot of work on you , that means you have to read on your own to know more . But all the movies he uses is horror movies , really very bad ones , he looks like fascinated with this kind of movies , and this is the worst thing in his class , I did not enjoy the movie days at all which was about 9 movies
In general Mr. Hoffer was a nice guy. But don't take him if you don't like reading really depressing books and watching really grossdepressing movies. (For example: "Beloved"-book and "Splice"-movie among others). He doesn't grade your papers. He just critiques them and has you improve them.
He didn't really teach. You just watch movies and he tells you to connect the films to the readings. He didn't really explain how, he just expected us to know. Easy class, but I would like if he actually taught.
His class format is very successful and it is very hard to struggle in his class. There are only 5-7 assignments in the class and they are all easy. He is definitely willing to work with you on your 3 papers.
If you like getting your assignments graded in a reasonable amount of time don't take him. takes forever to give you feedback on any paper you turn in and gives you assignments with no due date or written instructions. There is no plan or structure to the class, & its very unorganized. Had to buy 30$ book for the movie pictures in it! what a joke!
Professor Hoffer is ginuenly a nice guy! Be prepared to watch movies that don't exactly brighten your day, but will bring forth rich discussion. He gets you to think outside the box and encourages you to reach out to him if you need help with your papers. Even though the movies may leave you speechless, dont be afraid to speak up in class!
He does take a min. to grade things, and he does have an interesting choice in movies, but hes a pretty cool guy and easy going teacher. I didn't hate going to class, so for an English class i can't complain. I wouldn't mind taking him again.
Cool teacher, and he's easy on the eyes.
The rule: E-mail or talk to Professor Hoffer to get help on your essay. I did this for the last two take-home essays, and I got A's; I learned more from the assignments than going to class. The class set-up was OK; we wasted too much time watching movies and I felt like they were learning from students more than they were teaching us.
You spend a good amount of time watching films and connecting it to the books. Not the class to take if you are need a lot of help and structure. He's really interesting and he encourages diversity. I really liked him.
Love and hate this class at the same time. Love that we just watch movies the entire class. Hate all of the essays and group work we do.
Are you ready for movie time????? I really enjoy films ant this guy sent my appreciation level thru the roof. Fun, interesting, and friendly is how I would describe Hoffer. Plus, only 1 class text (The Great Gatsby) easy one the wallet. He does expect moving papers so he's not for slouches.
The class was co-taught with another professor. It took a long time for grades to be given; however, feedback on projects happened quickly. The class was very disorganized.
Love how he would depict movies, totally watch movies in a different way. Class work and group work was super easy. Felt comfortable asking him any instead of staying quiet. absolutely love his teaching style. understood everything.
My experience with Hoffer was a very good one. He is a tough grader, but he gives good feedback. The homework was minimal, as the only homework was the reading assignment for that week and three 3-6 page papers. Overall, my experience was great and I learned a lot; my only complaint is that he and his co-teacher took a long time to grade essays.
Amazing, everyone should take a class from him. Beware of horror/scary movies
Definitely would've liked him as a person more if we'd met under different circumstances. Knows his stuff but doesn't always get past his own intellect when reaching out to students. He really does try but is definitely someone with a unique personality that doesn't always mesh well with others. He gives very critical feedback on papers.
TAKE HIM! Such a nice and respectful professor and truly cares about his students. It's an English class so expect to write several papers and to be critically graded on them. He makes English enjoyable which many students admire him for. We watch movies and write sophisticated papers on those movies. If youre a good writer, take him!!
Mr. Hoffer is a phenomenal instructor. This class is not your high school english class. He uses different types of literature to fully explain the different topics he is passionate about. The class is challenging, but incredibly fun at the same time. I highly recommend taking him for English classes!
This was the coolest teacher I have took for english 103. He help you a lot with your papers and you watch the coolest movies in his class. There is a book needed for the class but thats about it. Just do the work and you will pass! Take him!
Mark is really funny and cool. His class can be challenging but he is always willing to help, as long as you ask. He shows some pretty rad movies. This class isn't impossible, if you just do the work and do the reading. You will need a few books and don't get behind on the reading. He is pretty flexible and wants his students to pass,
Hilarious and one of my favorite professors. I took three of his classes and he was really helpful and interesting.
Mr. Hoffer is very good about explaining the literary works and he grades fairly. I would take him again even though some of the movies he plays in the class are eccentric.
For the 101 class, you're graded on 3 papers and 4 green book essays. The papers compare 2-3 novels along with a film. You watch 2 movies in class per paper and are given a choice on what to write on. You read a minimum of 2 books at a time and they can be hit or miss. Most classes were spent watching films. I went 40% of the time and got an A
Hoffer is a pretty chill professor. He makes us read, but he gives us movies to watch during class and please participate! Staring contests in silence is awkward. Passionate about what he does, don't procrastinate on your papers! Get a rough draft to him ASAP so you can get feedback. He is there to help you, not fail you. You get what you earn.
Great guy, knows how to teach!!!
i took him as an honor course, and honestly it was too bad. he gives you a lot of creative freedom (i.e. i cussed in my papers LOL) and grades very fairly and easily. there are a lot of films integrated into the class, which i thought to be very interesting, and the papers he assigned were fun to write because you have to be clever with them. 10/10
Mr. Hoffer is a patient, caring, and helpful instructor. He shows you how to write thesis and or assignments in the right way. He is always available in person or via emails with any questions. Overall he is a great instructor.
Hoffer is a great teacher. His course has an emphasis towards a more dark/gothic literature choice of materials. He's a nice guy and wants you to pass. He is always ready to answer any questions, and responds to emails quickly. He's also involved in how we as the students are reacting to the course material. Do the reading, and put in some work :)
Hoffer's class was set up catered to the students this whole semester. Along with days dedicated to student-led discussion, the way he utilized course material and external resources fostered a self-learning environment that made me appreciate his teaching more. If you need to, have a 1-on-1 in his office hours to get dedicated and useful feedback!
Professor Hoffer is extremely helpful! Hes encouraging and engaging, but also sensitive to everyones needs! He leaves no room for anyone to ever feel incompetent and is always available to help and answer questions! There is no way you can fail this class unless you just dont try! Professor Hoffer will help you to be a better reader and writer
Mr. Hoffer is a great professor! He cares about his students and makes you feel comfortable. He doesnt put you on the spot and make you feel bad. Take his class, it was very easy!
Professor Hoffer was sweet and wasn't tough on his students at all. There's no pressure to participate in class discussions, but you'll get the most out of his class that way. Most of the class actually runs by having class discussions, so if you won't participate, you at least have to listen! There are 4 papers and he's very nice in his grading.
Hoffer was really cool and the class was interesting. Lots of focusing on social issues and analyzing media. Work is mostly writing. He grades somewhat hard but if you put in the effort you'll definitely pass. However, he never really taught about writing in class so you're really being graded by how well your previous teachers taught you.
Class was mostly open-ended discussions with a few papers throughout the semester. He was very passionate about the topics which made class more engaging, and he didn't grade too hard when it came to papers. However, he is a little slow to grading.
Professor Hoffer is the sweetest man ever. He genuinely cares about his students and is passionate about teaching. I took his honors course and it consisted of 2 papers, 4 impromptu essays (only keeps your best 2), and class participation. Topics are interesting and grading criteria was clear, just follow the rubric he gives and you will earn an A
Professor Hoffer is an amazing, passionate instructor, he loves to engage with his students and loves to see us all participate and give feedback to one another, he wants you to shine, succeed, and become fearless of writing and engaging with others, your opinion matters, and he is available to walk with you every step of the way. Follow and do.
Not very understanding
Took Professor Hoffer's Class during Covid in the Fall semester. I'll tell you that it was a stressful class. He's very opinionated.
Hoffer is easily my favorite Professor Ive had. He is very kind and values the opinions of his students. Theres a lot of good discussions you are able to have with other students and the reading material is pretty interesting imo. He is very helpful if you have any questions outside of class and answers back fast. Would definitely take him again!
Professor Hoffer is the best English professor I've taken at AVC. He is one of the few English professors at AVC who are actually good. I've read a comment from a person on here who disliked his class and called him "Waldo" from Where's Waldo. Hoffer isn't a bad teacher at all, and his lectures are engaging. Unlike others, he is very caring too.
If you see the people that are talking bad about Prof. Hoffer don't listen to them he is so easy and they are just lazy. 5 Assignments for the entire class and help you with feedback on the writings. He also is so sweet and never makes you feel bad about how you analyze a piece of work and instead encourages us to branch out!
He was super nice and gave good feedback. He's really laidback and passionate about what he's teaching. The class was pretty easy we had 4 essays and had to read 3 books. I would definitely recommend him. If you have any questions he's really easy to contact and responds quickly.
I strongly suggest you take his class. He has do 4 major essays, he is available to help you. It is an easy class, as long as you are doing your essays you will be good. He isn't strict. This class is great for when you have a fulltime job, no stress added.
Overall, Hoffer is a great professor. We had to do four papers that consisted of at least six pages. I love how he does not force anyone to speak, and he is always willing to help anyone. He does give one short writing assignment at the end of the semester. We did watch movies for most of the classes.
He gives little direction for the papers, and then grades very hard. He does not have you upload the paper to Canvas' Turnitin so you can receive exact feedback. You email him the paper and he sends a paragraph back how the paper is not the topic he was looking for. Also, he does not state what sources you are allowed or not allowed to use.
Professor Hoffer is a great teacher! Be ready to read, participate in class, and do in-class group assignments. You have 3-4 essays to do and watch movies to make connections with books read. I really loved his class. He is very passionate about his teaching and diverse. He definitely make you look at reading in a whole different perspective.
English is not my strongest subject yet I still received an A. He is willing to help with any obstacles that you might be having. Lots of reading with material that can be confusing. He is willing to go over anything and willing to explain in detail if needed. Extremely helpful if one on one help is needed.Great Professor! Highly recommended!
You have to complete 3 to 4 papers, work in groups, pretty laid back environment and we watched plenty of films. Mr. Hoffer was generally very caring and open minded when it comes to the perspective of his students. I can personally say that after many experiences with professors he is very different when it comes to his student's education.
He was a sweet professor, we watched movies in his class which are resources for our papers. It was only 3-4 essays due at the end of the semester which he assigns at the beginning & is willing to help u along the way.
This class is a breath of fresh air, I really enjoyed it. However, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who tends to procrastinate, considering it's very loosely structured. Mr Hoffer is awesome and very helpful
Great professor and great class! (Took 257) Just would not recommend to students who procrastinate and need structure because there is little to none and there are not any updates on grades throughout the semester, just one final grade at the end so it is a bit stressing. Other than that, it is an interesting and fun class.
I took Hoffer for ENG 257, Hoffer likes class discussions and group work, nothing crazy, just stuff to help you prepare for your essays. Show up, participate, read, write your essays after finishing each book and you'll pass wiithout stacking up too much work. Procrastion is the only adversary for this class in my opinion.
(ENGL 257) He's really understanding and considerate. He makes the students feel welcomed and always there to help out. It's a fun and interesting class. No quizzes, just group work/discussions, watch films, read 3 different books, articles, and write three final essays (5-6 pages each.) DO NOT PROCRASTINATE and show up for class in order to pass.
(257) Professor Hoffer was great, but I struggled with the loose structure of the course. At the end of the semester, you are expected to turn in a portfolio containing 3 essays and a reflection. You write essays in class, but those are separate from the portfolio. Don't procrastinate; you will fall behind. Wish there was more feedback from prof.
The instructor Mark Hoffer, who's an organized, respectful, easy grader, well developer, when it comes time to work with his students. Any given homework assignment is more clear to understand than water itself. Mark Hoffer gives a list of reading which I found helpful for me. I highly suggest you take him, if you are in need of an English class.
Good professor, really cares about his students. If you're really into english and native literature, you'll love his class. If not, you'll be a little bored. If you're a stem major, great class to have since you don't have many assignments and they're not too difficult. Good, safe class. Beware: Group assignments every day!
