He is hardcore!!!!!
Good teacher not that hard but you do have to do some work!
Good teacher, but he makes you work.
Lot of work (two 5 page papers, one 10 page all strictly graded), but a great teacher, really nice guy, and very helpful.
He never sent me my paper, his feedback is not helpful. The material was interesting. Classs discussions were fun.
Hand-down, one of the best english teachers I have ever had...hell, one of the best teachers, period. He's awesome, fun, and knows what he's doing. What a great guy!
Awesome teacher. Very interesting. Will listen to everyone's point of view. Always has great input for your papers. I aced his class. Loved the class discussion and peer review.
Mr. Hughes is one of the best teachers i have ever had. He keeps the class interesting and always explains things so you can always understand it. If your struggling in certain writing areas he will point out and he will give effective advice to better your writing skills.
Hey if you are getting revues from these students, and they can't spell i think i at least deserved a C. Great teacher he will teach you alot about english, but he will teach you more how to look at things in a different light. Hey if i keep writing i get my weight.250
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He's not easy nor is he difficult. Like the previous poster stated, he teaches you to look at things in a completely different light. He makes you eager to come to class, study, and participate. He makes you work for your grade and that's the mark of a great teacher. Mark, you da man!
Mark Hughes is one of, if not, THE BEST, in the English department at this school. He makes you drive for the best and he has a way of making things very interesting . If you are at this website to find out about him..one word..WINNER!!!
He is a man who cuts points for no reason, at any cost avoid him, he traets u like a stupid
he's a hard professor...the way he grades essays are extremely hard. must work very hard in his class and do all the readings. all the quizes are from the readings. Must read very closely especially memorizing characters.
Coolest teacher ever! Must take Lit class. A great deal of work...but we are in college....it is to be expected!!! Thanks for a great semester!
He takes his job seriously, as he should. He doesn't tolerate being late & excessive lateness, I found the material to be a bit dull, but him to be a good teacher. As far as grading goes, he doesn't let things slide, he's very thorough, but very fair. He lets you know what he wants, and doesn't accept less. I got an A. Great teacher!!!
Very helpful, even outside of his specific class. Not very demanding. Classes are heavily discussion based. Grammar, punctuation and writing ability come in distant second to content, reflecting the reading ability of the student and his/her ability to comprehend/relate the reading material.
bad bad bad not responsable to be a teacher
not bad at all...not a hard grader if you do whats asked in the papers you will do fine...keeps things intrested...good pick =)
Big focus on psychology, but all the essays tie together,& you learn a lot about yourself. Be prepared to do some introspective work! Not your typical 102 class. Hughes is a nice, down to earth, guy, very helpful, and funny. A lot of reading and writing, but it IS a writing class. Time management skills could be better, but overall, good prof.
Prof. Hughes has to be in my top 3 favorite teachers since I stated college. He made he feel smart in class and usually agreed with what everyone said in class. He was a fair grader, but you have to work at your grade because he gives you the grade that you deserve nothing more nothing less. Take his class, your going to enjoy your time with him!
very cool guy. straight forward.
Wonderfull Professor,Love the class topics. DO think twice to choose this professor.
He was really friendly and kept the class engaged. He makes you feel comfortable sharing your opinion in the class. The essay assignments do require a lot of thought about the reading. And you will fail the quizzes if you don't read! He wants to make sure you are doing your work.
The famous Mark Hughes...He's straight to the point, he's fair, demanding, funny, cool, has zero tolerance for lateness and ****. It's guaranteed you will learn something or a lot from him, because I know I did. He's passionate about his work, but you have work to do. Though he kept me on my toes, I would take him again if in the future.
The famous Mark Hughes...He's straight forward, he's fair, demanding, funny, cool, has zero tolerance for lateness and ****. It's guaranteed you will learn something or a lot from him, because he's passionate about his work, knows this stuff, but you have work to do. Though he kept me on my toes, I learned a lot from him! Great professor, excellent help during office hours, he makes you want to come to class. Clear, concise intruiging, engaging, funny handsome witty man. Readings are requires, class discussions frequent. Overall a great guy. Highly recommend.
If you take this class you will read the entire textbook. I read the entire text and understood it too but in the end I got a D. I just don't get it? He's an alright guy but a hard grader. He wont go over what's on the final and he wont go over the chapters in the class. Remember hard grader. If you know your stuff you will still have a tough time.
Great guy. Very helpful and supportive but you have to work hard. One of the best professors so far. Will choose his class again.
Although he is very tough teacher at times, and also a very tough grader. He puts in a lot of work into his class. I had him and I noticed a difference in my writing right away. His methods were great!
One of the best classes I've ever taken, one of the best educators I've ever encountered. Don't fall asleep in class, do all the required readings. He will quiz if you don't! Funny guy, engaging. Just show some kind of effort and he WILL work with you.
Since this was an Honor's class there was no textbook but there were a lot of books to read. And we read the heck out of them. Coming prepared Read enough that you can be apart of the class conversation. If you slack on reading, your grade will follow. He's really clear and helpful and showing progress through effort will pay off.
Great, helpful teacher. He's very straight forward and expects you to actually work for a good grade-which really does help you learn as a student in the process-and he doesn't accept people who don't put in the effort to learn. However, if you are a student who tries and wants to learn he is a concerned and helpful professional that I recommend.
He's a very knowledgeable guy & his lectures are interesting to learn about various famous authors. You'll learn a lot in his class. But he is a VERY EXTREME HARD GRADER on your essays. Despite I visited his office hrs for help & clarity. He seemed to give you strong advice, but it all turned out to be flawed. I got a D. NOT RECOMMEND & BEWARE!
This professor is a very fair one. He wasn't too strict and he wasn't too laid back. He was like the porridge in Goldilocks and Three Bears--just right. I don't know what all these other people are complaining about.
He appears very nice in class. But don't let it fool you. He grades essays very hard for you not to earn a decent grade. Despite if you have a learning disability. He comments on your essay feedbacks. But when you follow it to revise your essays. You weren't able to get a good grade. I got a D in the course.
He's a good professor. I learned a lot from the course.
He picked up the class a week before we started and it turned out to be great. He's very strict and gives quite a bit of homework, but he's fair to everyone. He's very clear about what he wants from his students and he's extremely helpful. It was a summer class (7weeks) and I sill got an A. I'm taking his ENG 102 soon. I recommend him 100%!
Mr Mark J Hughes is a great teacher. All of the readings that where assigned where interesting and broad so everyone could relate in some way which made the assignments enjoyable. Also Mr Hughes pretty much lays out everything for you if you listen to what he wants you will get an A.
Mr Hughes was very little help to me .Most times very confusing ,and very opinionated . I often times don't feel like he did not even read my papers before grading them . I realize that I may not be the only one who feels this way judging by the fact that more then haft of his students dropped his class.
Do your work and you will get A.
An absolutely excellent professor, extremely helpful and class was fun. I will recommend him for everyone
Awesome professor!
By far the best professor I've ever had. Classroom discussions are interesting and relatable. He seems strict but he's just doing his job. Very clear on what he expects in each paper and how to aquire those expectations. All topics were interesting. Very nice guy. Would definitely take again!
He is very knowledgeable & intelligent instructor, but he grades your essays NEGATIVELY HARD. Although I attended his office hours for assistance. He provided me his feedback by what I needed to correct & improve on my essays. Nevertheless I got a D. This is very sad by how writing instructors are unpleasant to grade your essays constructively.
Professor Hughes was tough but very, very good. He exposed me to materials and ideas I had never encountered before, and he made me write a lot of different papers. I learned a lot and improved my writing. Great prof. Funny too.
Professor Hughes is so awesome. This is my first semester at CCP, as I'm returning to college after a 2 year hiatus. He is extremely helpful, thorough, and attentive when teaching his class. If you make an effort to read the material and complete the essays, you'll have no issue passing his class. I highly recommend Professor Hughes! Great guy!
Great professor. Gives good feedback. Interesting subject but you have to work hard
Great professor for first time college students. Explains what he expects from every paper clearly and thoroughly. Just make sure you come to class
The best teacher I've had so far !! Mr. Hughes is a very smart teacher who challenges us to think outside the box. One great thing about Mr. Hughes is that he makes time for us outside of the classroom to help improve our assignments.
Inspirational, hilarious, good graded
Great teacher!!!
Prof Hughes was an exemplary professor in almost every way. I highly recommend him.
Mr. Hughes was a great teacher and very fair. he has great energy. I had a death and my family and became unmotivated to come to class but he was very understanding once I returned and i was caught up on work in no time! i highly recommend Mr. Hughes, the books he assigns to read are interesting also.
Amazing person & teacher! He's very understanding no matter the situation, you talk to him and he will help you out. (108) 5 papers, you feel like they're back to back but his lectures will guide you into doing good on them. He loves participation because he devotes himself to his lectures. He wants you to learn so of course he will give you work.
There is five paper to do for this course, but at the end, you'll be grateful you did. He is very understanding and for me as ESL student his lectures were straightforward. Amazing professor, you'll love it.
He was amazing! Took him for a 7 week during the summer, work load was a lot but class was always great. Discussions everyday, couple quizzes on the night before a reading, few papers, then the final. Would definitely take him again for any English course!
Mr. Hughes is a very arrogant and condescending English teacher. He brings a lot of political and literature subjective matters into this course. Since this ENG 98/99 is a reading comprehension and writing punctuation for students, who are enrolled into the CCP English program to learn and improve on their grammar before they go into ENG 101 & 102.
Professor Hughes is a very nice professor. The class to me was good there is a lot of papers but by the end of the class you will see that the papers were necessary. I would take his class again. Get ready to read and write because overall that is what the class is about. He is also very big on participation.
Becareful with this instructor and this specific course. He has students to read, write, and present on radical subjective literatures. Which it will lead to non-practical theories in today's society of a relevant and functional economy.
Mr. Hughes was a very good teacher. Very understanding and very nice
Professor Hughes has helped me to boost my English writing in three month. The class was not easy but all the assignments were productive for the improvement that I was looking for. His teaching also provides a lot of interesting information about human nature in general. Im grateful for the results I have gained with this professor!
The professor mark Hughes is a great teacher because he respect his students . Also, he has a wonderful Strategy in his class that encourages student to work more and Succeed.
I really LOVED this class! The readings were very interesting and relatable to everyday life, as well as some current events. Professor Hughes is very caring and is willing to go above and beyond to help his students succeed. Also, I very much appreciated his encouraging emails and him congratulating the class on milestones throughout the semester.
He lectures about, "Socialist Democracy," subjects to learn, read, & write for students' intro reading & writing comprehension courses (098 & 108) as beginners at CCP's English Program to be oddly strange. Before students to progress into 101, 102, & beyond upon receive credits. Sadly, I realized for the English Dept. to permit on these teachings.
Professor Hughes was a great teacher and the class was a great experience. I think he did a great job adapting the class to fit the online format, and it wasn't too difficult. I was relieved since times have been especially hard due to Covid. He graded work in a timely fashion and always left helpful comments.
I learned so much from Professor Hughes' class although it was an asynchronous class. The instructions were always clearly written out and easy to understand. I would definitely take a class that he's instructing.
Professor Hughes strategy for teaching English , made me eager to learn. I would say that his grading is fair, there is more than enough time to complete the work and he is always available to help.
Hughes is a goof teacher he gives you interesting books and articles to read, it is a good amount of work but it's not difficult work. He answers your questions right away and is very clear on what he expects from you when he assigns his work, he was also very flexible on times to zoom for the most part I would recommend taking him.
For the this class there are a lot of writing assignments, however it is the objective of a course titled "the research paper". There is one reading book assignment. Professor is very accessible to his students by zoom office hours, and email. This is class taught by a professor who wants his students to be successful and have fun learning
Kind, patient and caring person, has an interesting approach to teaching, never felt boring in his class!
Prof Hughes genuinely cares about his students progress, he is available outside of class. Shifting to online-learning, he has managed to construct a simple yet effective curriculum that naturally progresses to the research paper. The class is not overwhelming, and many of the papers are centered around your own personal experiences. 11/10 would do
Professor Hughes consistently provides thoughtful feedback for student's work, and seems genuinely passionate about teaching English. The work he assigns in class, whether through books or discussions, is always relevant and applicable in a student's own life.
Professor Hughes is amazing. Easy to talk too. He gives great feedback on what you need to work on. Very down to earth and makes you view reading in a different way.
He makes you work for your grade, however at the end of the semester you'll be proud of yourself. He pushes you to see your potential. There's a lot of reading but most of it is very interesting. His feedback is great.
I really enjoyed this class and the chosen reading for it. Professor Hughes is fair and helpful. Instructions are clear and detailed. I definitely recommend this professor.
Professor Hughes is very kind and inspirational. The reading materials used in class are interesting. This course is not only an academic writing course. It is also a course that enriches my life. There are a lot of questions you will ask yourself after taking part in this course, like "What's the meaning of my life?" or "my life happiness?"
An amazing professor!! Loved him and his classes. Super close with his students and gives you feedback after grading. Youll need to read a lot of articles for the essays but its not that hard. 100% would take him again!
Prof. Hughes was great and accessible. He clearly detailed the content of the writing assignments, so you know what he expects. The first writing assignment is basically extra credit, and he gives more. You'd have to put in no effort to get less than a B.
He is a great professor interesting and the topics he chooses to make you write are interesting
Professor H is passionate about teaching and help student in need. In his class you will gain knowledge.
This professor lectures social economics like BLM, SJW, LGBTQ literature subjects rather than teaching for students to learn and improve with their English grammar knowledge, reading comprehension, and writing punctuation; before they advance into ENG 101 and 102 courses.
Prof. Hughes is a fantastic teacher who genuinely values your time. As long as you are willing to engage and apply yourself, he'll make sure you get the most out of the course. Even if the readings weren't always captivating, his discussions and lectures were. If you enjoy literature or just want to take an intriguing class, he's well worth it.
Initially, I was anxious about taking English 102 because essays are challenging for me. This course was certainly not without its challenges, however, the topics we wrote about were interesting, relevant, and useful and Professor Hughes is patient and kind. I genuinely enjoyed this course and would take a class with this professor in the future.
One of my favorite English professors I've had. He assigns a lot of reading for homework, but it becomes easier to get through. As long as you do the readings, you'll be fine.
Professor Hughes creates fun classroom environments. The type of class he teaches motivates me to go to class. He's very understanding and helpful when necessary. He's witty and makes learning fun.
Taking this class be prepared for pop quizzes and many readings. This class is very difficult!
He is really energetic and makes the material and the books we read interesting and applicable to life outside of school. I'm really glad I took this class because looking into happiness is something I needed to start. Overall very happy with the class.
Had Hughes for spring semester, overall he is a great teacher!! He shows that he cares about your learning, gives very detailed feedback on papers and very easy to get ahold of. Make sure you actually read or you'll fall behind very easily. 10/10 would take him again, type of teacher that makes you want to come into class everyday
The instructor is a very overbearing and harsh grader with the students papers to write on their thesis of various constructive analyses and examples. However, he grades them very ignorantly bias to go off subject and tangent as very deconstructive and condescending upon his students. Becareful of this particular English instructor.
Professor Hughes gives great feedback, and his course was structured in a very engaging way. I took his class in 2021 and learned a lot about my academic strengths. His class was very inspiring to me, and I ended up asking him for a letter of recommendation for my grad school applications, which he kindly agreed to help with.
Professor Hughes English 102 Research Paper Class discussed the book Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt. The class is easy, just schedule your time and submit your work on time. Be prepared to do a lot of reading and writing. Professor Hughes cares about his students and is very kind and sweet. Go to his class you won't be disappointed!!!
Pretty solid class. Be ready to read and to take quizzes based on the book you're reading. A good amount of essays and writing but if you take your time, do good research, and follow the requirements your bound to get a good grade.
Was on Jeopardy. Very thorough lectures, shows every perspective on a topic to his ability and overall a fun class to not miss and actually attend in college. I really liked the system of having small quizzes around 4-5 multiple choice questions on the articles that were assigned before that day to really encourage you to read the text.
