GREAT PROFESSOR
A number 1 prof! Would take any class with him!
Very good,One of my BEST teachers yet!
Willing to go beyond class time to give you all the help you need.
great guy. will go beyond call of duty to help out a student.
tough class, very very good prof. hated the lab but that wasn't his fault :)
Dr. Huyler is the BEST professor ever. He writes hard exams, so pay attention and take good notes!
His class is interesting to some, but he likes to go off on a tangent about stories of his life. Huyler is a funny, helpful guy who is involved in many student activities. His tests are hard but he gives out a lot of extra credit and provides old exams.
one of the toughest classes I had but also one of the few I enjoyed
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! I WOULD AVOID HIM LIKE THE PLAGUE...HE'S BORING AND UNHELPFUL...THE CLASSES I HAD WITH HIM WERE TERRIBLE...ENTER HIS CLASS WITH CAUTION!!!! I DON'T KNOW WHY EVERYONE HERE LOVES HIM, HE WAS HORRIBLE.
Salt pork and blue cheese anyone??? Great teacher - entertaining, humorous and you'd be amazed at how he simplifies very difficult material. Study well for exams and the class will be easy. A geat morning class.
I thought the class was tough, but Dr. Huyer was funny and he tried to help everyone.
He was OK - nothing special. He was funny, but if he didn't like you, watch out.
This guy is awesome! Anyone who doesn't love him is obviously not paying attention. He'll do anything to help you and his sense of humor makes class a lot of fun to attend. I've never met a better professor. This man deserves some of that salted pork and blue cheese!
AMAZING professor! Dr. Huyler is always available to help students. He is the only professor that I have had that holds review sessions until every student understands everything. Does more than he has to and he enjoys every bit. If you study for the nutrition exams, they are super easy. Awesome class - I have been addicted to salt pork ever since!
funny, helpful, dedicated to his teaching, intrested in helping you learn, devotes his time to helping you understand the material (review sessions, office hours, review sheets, TA review sessions)...he is the best teaher I had so far. The class is not the easiest, but if you put in the time you will see that its a great course. you will learn a lo
This man is awesome! I have never been so inspired by a professor. He really goes out of your way to help you. And I have no idea how people can not love him. He's there to help his students do well and he's a great resource outside of class. I too Ansci 454 with him too and will be doing my independent study work with him. Highly recommend him!
Great teacher and great class. Exams are thorough but VERY straightforward. There will be no curveballs and if you study hard and know everything in the notes, you will definitely get an A on the exam.
I love him!He is so funny and just a nice guy!I love going to his class. What I thought was going to be a boring class turned out to be pretty enjoyable. His exams are a little tough, but not impossible to do well on if you just study. His review sessions are very helpfull. He wants you to do well and puts a lot of effort into making sure that happens.
Dr. Huyler is simply amazing. He really devotes himself to students and goes out of his way to make sure his students understand the material he covers. He holds weekly SI sessions for the weekly quiz, but he's so helpful that as long as you put in the effort, the A will be yours. Definitely take him.
Very helpful and dedicated to student. Schedules review sessions before tests with SI's AND himself and will go over basics if no one has particular questions. Quizzes are weekly and pretty easy. Exams are a little harder but still pretty clear. Goes slightly fast during lectures, but posts the slides on the website right after class.
He is a funny guy, but as far as clarity goes -- not so much. He often answers questions with "I don't know" and uses terms that probably aren't in the dictionary. If you have a strong bio background it will be an easy A, but for someone like me..it was a struggle. BUT he does hold multiple reviews and SI sessions. He is very dedicated to helping.
Prof.Huyler was very helpful. He explains the material very well. For exams, read the slides. They are more helpful than the book. But use the book for images.Tests were very straight forward and simple.JUST STUDY FOR THEM!!
Alright. He is very helpful if you ask question, and holds tons of reviews, I give him that. BUT. I found his biology course incredibly difficult. I took three biology courses in high school and passed all three (not with an easy teacher, I might add) and I still can't grasp what he's teaching in this course. He's also too fast with the slides..
He held review sessions but they were not helpful. I had a strong background in Biology and when I took his class I was completely lost. He went fast with slides and in lectures and review sessions he went off on tangents that not many understood just to explain something which only left many even more confused. I would not recommend his class.
He's a nice guy and knows his stuff. His lectures are pretty easy to follow. He has weekly quizzes and his exams aren't impossible. However, his questions are all true/false and can be very confusing at times. I liked him and I learned a lot, but his tests were not easy.
Huyler is great professor, the only complaint I have about the class is that all the exams and quizzes are true/false, and some of the questions are worded in a manner that can be lead to them being misinterpreted. Just make sure to do well in the labs and you should be fine for the class.
wicked nice guy. you can tell he wants students to actually learn. his exams are ridiculously hard though. like he will barely mention something in lecture, and then there will be a 15 point question on it on the exam. if you miss lecture you will miss a lot of stuff that will be on the exams! he is very helpful if you go to office hours.
Great professor, has a really dry sense of humor, makes himself available for students and is always willing to help. If you blow off lecture, you're not going to do well in this class.
GREAT professor. I had him for Bio 100 and Animal Science 101. He has very helpful review session and always makes himself available for students. He enjoys going off on long tangents but often test on those tangents. Goes a little fast with the powerpoints but it's ok because he always posts them to Moodle. I'm going to miss him next semester!
Very good at explaining clearly. Humorous. Switched from Francis to his class and definitely did not regret it at all.
great professor, dry humor but interesting course. very helpful during office hours. exams are all true/false questions which sucks, but he will allow you to challenge any questions you got wrong to win some points back on exams
Good teacher. He can go through the slides pretty quickly, but he posts them to Moodle. I hardly ever used the textbook. His tests and quizzes are all true/false, so they can be pretty difficult if you don't study. Otherwise, he is very funny and enjoys teaching.
Did not attend half of the classes after the first test since I did not find his lectures useful. His tests are all true and false and a few matching. A lot of questions, usually 50-70. I did not like his tests at all since the questions sometimes did not make sense to me or were not relevant. Wish I had another teacher.
Very funny. Knows what he's talking about. All exams and quizzes are true/false and can get confusing, so study hard. Good teacher, tough final. Rushed through the last few sections. Did not use the book once, but I would advise using it to help study. Learned a lot from the class.
Huyler is one of the best professors at UMASS. I enjoy class and he enjoys what he is teaching. Very funny and although tests are true/false it is not hard, if you put in time studying. I started losing interest in bio before but now i know why i was in love with it. I recommend talking this class and i will try to take any of his future classes!
Dr. Huyler is a very nice guy although if you struggle with reading or have any type if disability his class isn't for you. He will not change anything for someone who has a disability. His grammer is horrible! All his tests are true/false, and he always tries to trick you. I would not recommend him for anyone unless you like teaching yourself!
Great professor! Really enthusiastic, which does help make the class more interesting. Does everything off power points. Also hosts review sessions weekly and even has extra "bio-chat" sessions during office hours. Really helpful professor, definitely cares about the students. Exams are true false, but if you study you'll do just fine.
Professor Huyler is a good guy and tries his best to make biology something college students can relate to with all his drinking analogies. But despite his efforts, he often came up short in engaging students as for the most part he would read directly off the lecture slides. His exams/quizzes are all true/false but he makes them really tricky.
Thinks he's funny, isn't. Confusing when he goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with what we are learning about. I studied like you wouldn't believe, I never missed an SI session, review session, office hour, or time at the resource center, yet still found his tests impossible true and false is ridiculous for all the tests and the final.
Loved this professor! He really wants his students to do well. Generous when it comes to curving exams. Responds to emails really fast! Agreed to write a recommendation thru email. Very passionate and humorous as well.
Huyler is an ok professor. He does give homework which can be difficult and his weekly quizzes are solely dependent on the textbook and slides. He does take attendance and you do have to put in a lot of effort to do well on his exams. All exams and quizzes are only T/F. If you work hard, do your homework, and go to class you will succeed.
He's a nice professor- the students are extremely uncooperative, including TA Carrie Thurber. Don't take anything from her unless you want her to teach only the white students. Now the professor himself is a nice guy- his slides are informative and he keeps his word. There were maybe a few rude students there at first- who left fortunately.
Huyler is a great professor. At the beginning of the semester, he was really thorough and explained things clearly. As the semester went on, he became more rushed, but still better than a lot of professors. He posts the slides on Moodle which is helpful. His tests and TA's quizzes are TF and really difficult, but if you study hard, you'll do fine.
Great professor. Material is thorough but he is always willing to help you to understand it. Office hours are very helpful. Wants you to succeed and absolutely LOVED the class. He has a dry sense of humor but it brightened some of the longer lectures. Would highly recommend this class!
Use the book! Definitely an engaging professor. Knows what he's talking about. Lectures definitely become more rushed and confusing as the semester goes on. Exam questions are considerably more in depth than what is taught in class. Interesting topic and definitely learned a lot but could have done better if exam questions were more generalized.
If you do not follow his rants or listen to his own take on the subject matter then you are learning useless information. He often says we will discuss this later and then never does. Tests and quizzes are all true and false. He goes off topic just by giving examples that are never needed.
This class was a ton of work. You have to know the material inside and out to do well on the TF tests and quizzes. However, Huyler has multiple review sessions and office hours which are very helpful. Make sure you go to his review right before the exams! He will stress topics that he knows will be on the test that he didn't get in to in class.
No homework. There are weekly quizzes. Quizzes and exams are all true-or-false, which can be frustrating. He is lenient when it comes to scaling. Go to review sessions if you have time. It is very important to listen carefully and take notes in class. The professor really wants students to do well and enjoy the class, and he is extremely helpful.
This class is a great way to start freshman year. Tests are all true/false but if you study, go to class, and go to SI sessions you'll do fine. Weekly quizzes are easy if you study. Lectures can be confusing but power points always online with speaker notes to help you out. Prof. Huyler is funny, friendly, and helpful. Would recommend.
Huyler is a really nice guy. He makes an 8 am bio class as enjoyable as can be. He doesn't require the textbook but it's not a bad idea to get it anyways for extra help. His exams/quizzes are all True/False, which can be a little frustrating. He offers his own review on top of the SI sessions weekly.
Huyler was awesome!! You don't really need the book, he's really clear and helpful. The weekly quizzes help with comprehension and the exams are not that bad at all.
8am biology may not seem like the best way to start your morning however Prof. Huyler makes coming to class worth it. He is there for the students and takes great care to ensure everybody is following along. His lectures are interesting and do not seem to drag. His exams are VERY tricky but not difficult. Study up and the class will be great!
Huyler is a caring professor, and is there for you if you need extra help. However, true and false exams are super hard! His lectures are at 8am and they're very dry... it's hard to pay attention. No homework, which wasn't helpful. SI sessions can help you understand material.
He is very good. Just pay attention in class and read questions carefully in the exam. You will be good.
His test is unclear, but he is lenient with curving and extra points. He sometimes shorts your points on test so always double check. His test is based on his lecture, but his lectures are unclear. Get ready to read and listen to him in his lecture.
Almost every test question is True or False which is very hard to get partial credit with. While he gives extra credit, it is easy to lose points. There are clicker questions almost everyday so make sure to go to class. He never explains questions that students get wrong on the answer sheets. You never know why you get things wrong which I hate.
A lot of the material on his exams are from his powerpoints or topics that he goes over during lecture so it is vital that you take notes and pay attention in class. His exams are difficult because they are all true/false and focus on very small details. He is not very clear but he has weekly Q&A sessions where you can ask him to review topics.
Love Dr. Huyler but you definitely have to work in his class. Tests are hard but if you study they are not that bad. Weekly quizzes arnt bad either, just need to go to class and listen. Overall hes a great guy and would recommend taking his class. He is always willing to help and even hold weekly review sessions.
Prof Huyler is a great person and his lectures are enjoyable. But, his T/F exams are very tricky and very specific. The weekly quizzes are easy to ace if you study. He is tough but he is always willing to help out.
The most difficult part of Dr. Huyler's Bio 151 course is his tests. The true and false questions can easily trip you up just by a single word, so you definitely need to study hard. You also can't skip this class regularly. I'd say skip once if you necessarily have to but never again after that. There's too much information you cant afford to miss
I've had Huyler for many different classes, but nutrition was one of my favorite that he taught. He is very hilarious and is really interested in helping you succeed. His tests are extremely challenging but he's very willing to give extra help if you need clarification on anything. He's a great guy and I learned a lot. Lectures were interesting.
He makes himself available to students and is very helpful! Expects students to go to classes often.
Really nice and wants you to succeed. If you're falling behind, email him or a TA ASAP. Total of three tests in the semester and a final. Need the iClicker. 10 out of the 11 Discussions counted. 11 Lecture quizzes and the highest scores on 10 are counted.
His tests are only true/false and focus on specific things which is frustrating but most questions come from the notes on his slides. Curves exams. Never any hw. Quiz every Friday and iClicker almost everyday. However, he babbles a LOT and is pretty confusing during lecture. Textbook not necessary but if you want to understand things well, get it.
Professor Huyler seems to have a lot of haters - but honestly he is HILARIOUS. I always see people rolling their eyes and complaining about his jokes but don't let them affect your choice to take his class. He's amazing and funny and will come to your tests to cheer you on in a baseball hat and windbreaker
He's really funny and made my 8 am hurt a lot less! You definitely miss something important if you skip lectures, but he's often available for review sessions and cares about his students.
He is a great professor, if you show up to lecture and take notes he will tell you everything that you need to know. He will never ask you to know things outside of what he has covered in lecture. Highly recommend his class and would have as a professor again in a heartbeat.
He's a great professor! His lectures are intense and he can be confusing at times, but he holds office hours, review sessions, and the SI Sessions also help a lot. You do need to put in a lot of effort to get an A, but it's not impossible. As long as you go to class, go to discussion, and do well on the weekly quizzes you'll be fine.
He always have office hours so you can get to know him. He is very considerate when you have to miss class or an exam. There are points for iClicker and a quiz every Friday, the quizzes are MC and the two lowest scores (out of 12) are dropped. People say that his tests are hard, but my average test score is 95 and I never taken Biology before.
Professor Huyler, in my opinion, was a great professor. He is very enthusiastic especially for an 8am class . It is not a hard class as long as you apply yourself and actually study for the tests. His tests are all T/F which are tricky but if you read over the power points you should be fine. Just apply yourself in the class and you should be fine.
You need to know so much information for this class it is irritating. The class itself is wicked boring but Huyler is a really passionate, super smart guy and makes the class as entertaining as possible.
Dr. Huyler is a nice guy, but his style of teaching wasn't exactly for me. He sped through slide shows without really clarifying much. Takes attendance with iClickers. Test are wicked hard T/F which most questions are made to trick you and complicate concepts you thought you understood. I walked out of every test thinking I either got a 50 or a 95.
Dr. Huyler is a very confusing professor. You really need to focus on the little stuff and review lectures after every class, but he's a nice guy and makes learning Bio fun. Honestly, he's one of the best professors I've ever had for Bio. Make sure you go to as many SI Sessions as you can and use office hours to your advantage! Overall, great class
iClicker is used, textbook is optional (but I recommend getting it for bio152 and it does help understand topics), pop quizzes every week (easy if you read over the powerpoints). You HAVE to pay attention in lectures and study hard because his tests are pretty tricky but he is a good professor with a cool personality. He is always willing to help.
Dr. Huyler is a very good professor. Easy to follow during lecture. I took AP Bio in high school and only 1 chapter throughout the semester wasn't review. Tests are T/F but if you study it is easy to pick up on the ones that are trying to trick you. Weekly quizzes aren't too bad but you do need to study for them. Lowest 2 quiz grades are dropped.
I took him for Nutrition and he frequently goes off on tangents that are not relavent to the actual subject at hand, or truly related to the most important piece of information he wanted us to receive. He is really accessible and just isnt super effective at teaching the subject. Hes very excited about it, he just doesnt convey information well.
Overall, hes not an effective Proffessor. He tries to make jokes, and sometimes theyre funny, but he tries so hard in doing that that he doesnt give you all the answers to what he wants you to know. He doesnt use a book or traditional PowerPoints which honestly might be more helpful since he has a habit of getting off topic. You teach yourself.
I love his Bio puns.
Great guy, but exams are all tricks and very hard.
Dr. Huyler was a magnificent professor. He truly cares about his students and will help you out if you need it. There are weekly quizzes every Friday but they are very easy. There is no homework. If you go to the exam review sessions held by him and the SI and review lectures, you will do fine on the exams. Don't buy the textbook, did not use it.
Definitely do not want to skip lectures here, whatever he says in class is the information that will be tested, not necessarily the info on the powerpoints. Short quizzes every Friday and the tests are tricky but only because of a load of detail-heavy info. Pay attention in class and take notes on what he says(!!) overall likable and funny guy.
Really nice guy, but I didn't enjoy him as a professor. I bought the book and didn't use it once, but it's still good to have. He gives weekly quizzes every Friday but they are written by the TAs and do not correlate to the exams. All of the exams are mostly true and false or multiple choice with the purpose of tricking the students.
Bought the book, didn't use once. His tests consist of 55 straight true/false questions- so hell. Only participation is from clicker questions and you never know when they're gonna happen in class. No homework so it really matters what u get on the tests. Quizzes every Friday but they are pretty easy- the tests are the hard part.
Before taking this class, my last experience in biology was in 6th grade. Dr. Huyler is a nice guy but he tends to stray off topic rather persistently and its hard to keep up with it. He only grades exams, quizzes, and participation and so if you do bad on exams be prepared to fail the class because they are what drive your grade.
This was my first time ever taking biology, and Professor Huyler offered a great introduction. His lectures were fast-moving and contained lots of information which, combined with the book, gave you all you needed. He is kind and understanding and answers questions respectfully. His lectures would be better if they were blackboard versus powerpoint
He is a great guy but HARD professor. He is very smart and knows what he is talking about, but makes his exams very hard. The exams are true/false and he will change just one word to make the sentence wrong. He also determines your final grade by the third decimal point. He goes fast but he's a nice man and tries to crack jokes during class
Great Professor if you learn large lecture style - clear organized slides with almost all info (says some stuff in lecture that you want to take notes on but can still pass without) Usually put extra questions on quizzes to boost your grade
He was really funny and easy to listen to, which is important since the lectures are long and dense. However, his tests are all true-false, which sounds easy but everything always seemed like a trick question. Also, 151 is all microbiology whereas 152 is macro, so be prepared for that.
My favorite professor! Don't get me wrong, I really had to work for my grade and at some points the content was unclear, but if you put effort in you'll do fine. Dr. Huyler the most genuine and kind professor I have ever had, and he is very easy to approach about points of confusion. Use him as a resource and take advantage of his review sessions!
Mark is by far one of my most favorite teachers at UMass! Although his quizzes (which are every Friday) are quite tricky, he's such a good teacher. All his quizzes are true/false as well as his exams. You don't necessarily need to go to class unless it's Friday. His powerpoint is a good learning source and he's always accessible .
Difficult material but he provides many out of lecture opportunities for review. He's very kind and cracks jokes in class to keep it light and interesting. Wording of his exams sometimes are tricky, even if you feel confident with the material.
Overall a pretty funny guy. His quizzes and exams are manageable IF you read the book. He doesn't give homework but honestly I wish he did. His lectures were hard to follow and there was a clicker question almost every day.
Hilarious professor. I had him at 8 am in the fall and he made me actually want to attend class. The exams were much harder than I was expecting. You must study and attend lectures to do well. He seriously cares about his students and the weekly quizzes, discussions, and iClickers really help cushion your grade.
Huyler is one of my favorite profs. I had him in fall 2019. No textbook (he assigns small passaged but you don't need them), uploads video recordings of lectures (but don't skip, clickers count attendance and I almost lost my A because I skipped so much), really lenient with exam scores and there's no homework. He's so smart and really funny.
Huyler is one of the best professors that I've had. His class is really enjoyable and he covers all material that is on the tests. you do need to study if you want a good grade though so don't skip out on that.
Cool guy
nice professor, test and quiz questions were ambiguous sometimes but I think I could have gotten an A in this class if I studied more, I just hate bio. he can be a little confusing in lecture sometimes but he will answer any questions you have
Great professor who gives useful lectures. He told us to read the textbook in preparation for class but I honeslty got by without the textbook (though I could've understood the material better probably). Nice dude who makes jokes in attempt to make an 8am class feel less of a chore. Exams were difficult but i didnt study so probably easy if you did
This class has no homework and tests are pretty fair. 1 pop quiz a week on Fridays which was a little difficult. Lectures are mandatory and at 8am but Professor is awesome and engaging! Theres 1 discussion a week but I had a really great TA too. If this class is open take it!!
Lectures are fascinating and enjoyable.I did not fully understand how concepts connected but I was still able to enjoy the biology jokes in class.Dr. Huyler is inspiring and even talked to my friend and me over zoom about future decisions.Take this class if you are ready for heavy STEM work and participation and if you want a sincere Professor.
Dr. Huyler is a fantastic professor that really knows what he's doing. He's fantastic at explaining concepts and while his tests can be hard, he gives a lot of "free" questions and will also drop lowest quiz grades. He really makes an effort for his students to succeed. He was awesome!
He is a really fun professor, who definitely loves the subject, but all his exams are very difficult and consist mainly of MCQs and True/False questions. Attendance is important!
really chill and funny professor. 10 weekly timed quizzes with the lowest 2 grades dropped.
Dr. Huyler makes a challenging course engaging. His lectures are fascinating, and while the tests can be tough, he provides helpful resources like weekly quizzes and the Unstuck study platform to support student success.
