Good class, teacher gives tips on difficult concepts, and tests are straightforward if you study and so the homework.
Homework/pretests do not prepare you for the tests & 20% of the tests were on concepts not taught. 1/2 of the class did not pass the final and he claimed that usually happens. He is more interested in making the class hard than in teaching. Unfortunately, there is no choice in teachers; to get a ACC degree you have to get through this class.
Very hard class; the UNR Accounting Department uses this class to 'weed out' students who are not committed to accounting. To succeed, do not focus on the homework, just practice as many of the problems at the end of the chapter as you can and use the Connect website learning center. Do not rely on the lectures to prepare you for the tests.
This class is hard, and it's supposed to be. If you don't know what you're getting yourself into, don't take it. Test questions seem to come from Connect, so do as many practice problems as you can. The more, the better. He's good about responding to emails, so if you have a question, ask. Otherwise, there's always Business Management.
Professor Jackson is great at teaching! Yes, this class is HARD especially if you're not prepared for the amount of time that it takes to do well. I highly recommend going to the boot camp to prepare. Overall a ton of work but I learned so much from him and his lectures are pretty interesting as well!
He is good and explains clearly. The material is hard. You need to understand it. I did Perdisco and Peach tree twice so I got really a grade.
Professor Jackson is great. I have never had a professor that was this passionate about teaching. He gives a lot of examples and really cares about his students. With that said this class is not easy. Do not skip assignments and do not rely on the final to pass the class. The final is very difficult.
A really hard class, but Dr. Jackson loves teaching and working with you. I love his lectures, and he is always available when I need help.
Dr. Jackson is an awesome professor. There is a lot of homework and the tests are tough, but if you struggle with something, he's more than willing to help you out. I wish he taught more undergrad classes than just 401. If you get an A in this class, you'll have earned it.
Jackson is a good teacher and extremely helpful. Whenever I had a question on the HW, he emailed me back quickly (except on weekends). Although it is a hard class, he does his best to explain the material to students. Also, he genuinely cares about what his students think. If you try hard and do the work, you'll do fine.
Teeerrible professor. His tests are hard!! The final in particular. His homework is time consuming and useless and he doesn't know how to teach. Literally worst professor I've ever had.
Deliberatley read the textbok. Otherwise you will do poorly. Understand the concepts considering his tests aren't straightforward. For example, on the tests he will provide info that aren't useful.
This program is horrible. Will want to make you change majors. This class is basically an online class, except test are taken in class. The professor has not been teaching for very long and it shows. Lectures were pointless. His power points were made by Mcgraw so he spends NO time customizing this course, felt very University of Phoenix-ish.
Do great on all the homework, pre quizes, pre test and it will DO nothing for you on the actual tests. Homework is suppose to be a learning tool but not in this class. Teacher just wants to make it unnecessarily harder than it should be. Doing 2 side projects along side class was a waste. Doing just one would be better. Well. good luck ACC students.
You can tell he definitely wants to be a good professor. He tries to make sure everyone understands the subject. Unfortunately the tests are outrageously hard and you will probably regret ever considering accounting as a career path. If you have less than 5 panic attacks throughout the semester, you are a better man than I.
Accounting is hard, but not impossible. But when he gives out his test,I feel its more testing me trying to figure he wants then actually testing my accounting knowledge. He has mentioned before his TAs help with the test making.Maybe that is why they are so atrocious. When the average of one test was 55% and 1/2 got F's,you know something is wrong.
Jackson is a terrible teacher. The tests are nothing like the homework and he gets a kick out of failing students (nearly 50% fail rate on all tests). Unfortunately, he's the only 401 teacher at UNR so you'll probably have to suffer through him anyway.
Jackson is extremely unhelpful. Anytime I emailed him, he would give me a useless response. His tests he gives are "so you understand", but unless you memorize everything for the book, and spend 30+ hours weekly just on his class, you will not pass. Peachtree was a poor software and he did not give any help on the program. We need a new 401 Prof.
He writes his own tests in a way that doesn't resemble the practice material he provides, or the lecture problems, whatsoever. He teaches from the book and tests from his own knowledge and this is the first class I've taken where I knew the material and couldn't pass tests. Took weeks to reply to emails. Will always blame fail rates on students.
I believe that Jackson does want his students to succeed but his expectations are unreasonable. The tests are incredibly difficult and the homework does nothing to prepare you for the exam. There is a lot of work for this class but it is manageable if you dedicate your ENTIRE life to the class. Jackson's tests made me rethink accounting as my major
He's very helpful and well organized. but this class did ask you plenty of time to do the homework and read through the books, the exams were fair if you did work hard.
Professor Jackson does a great job with 401. He's very organized and gives you what you pay for. Exams are tough. Lots of points to be earned with homework though. The early parts of the class are to try to weed out the idiots who can't keep debitscredits right. When he gets into the financials and current assets, the real learning begins.
People are babies. Rework his old exams and there's no reason for less than a B on anything. Very helpful, the class is just time consuming, but the points are manageable.
Class lectures are extremely helpful so do attend. Use extra credit opportunities- you might need them, as the exams are very tough. If you need help- use his office hours, he will be happy to help you. He doesn't curve nor lets you re-work missed assignments. Make sure you study good for the final, it can significantly improve your grade.
Professor Jackson is tough but fair. Accounting is simply not a easy major. This class will take a lot of time to get it right and do well on the tests. He is one of the most organized professor I have had and he does make the subject interesting. What worked best for me is to read and to do the practice exams he gives you to test how well you know
I am a 3.9 student. If you don't know if accounting is for you and don't love the subject don't torture yourself trying to get through this class. I got an A but plan to spend at least 25 hours a week studying the material.
At the beginning he tells you that grades are earned and not given: Remember that when he talks about how tenure decisions are made on student evaluations. Takes pride in writing tough tests, not teaching students. Tries to make up for no skill at teaching by being organized, and cares about the program. He takes feedback, not a great teacher.
Jackson is a straight forward professor. Not very approachable or lenient. The exams are based on lecture material and book material. You will do well if you put in the work.
Tends to follow the book content pretty closely. His grading policies for assignments are very reasonable (multiple attempts and receive the highest grade). Ask him for example problems and he explains very thoroughly. Only downside is that this class is very time consuming. Be very detail-oriented!
Jackson's first time teaching below a 400 level class. He showed zero mercy towards his 201 class. It was taught in a similar manner to a 400 except we had zero accounting knowledge going into it. If you didn't attend 4+ SI sessions a week, good luck not failing. Majority of the class fails. May God have mercy on your soul if you take this.
All you gotta do to pass: Pay attention in class. Go to EVERY lecture, you'll hate yourself if you don't. Attempt the homework (I barely looked at it.) And go to a couple SI's when you think you need to. This is a real college class. You will feel so smart afterwards. Read the chapters a night or two before the test. Jackson is a rather nice guy.
Very hard class but Jackson is a very good teacher. He explains everything and is always helpful. 3 attempts on homework assignments and 2 attempts for pre-lecture quizzes helps you to really learn the material. He does examples in class that really help too. Tests are hard but if you study well you will get a good grade. One of the best teachers.
Professor Jackson is one of the best accounting professors at UNR. The grading criteria is clear from the start and there is no curve. The class is meant for people who want to be accounting professionals, so he does not coddle at all. The grade you get is the one you deserve. He goes over many examples in class that almost always appear on the tst
Professor Jackson was a really great instructor, gives lots of examples and has each lecture online. He made a tough subject seem manageable. However, he doesn't write the tests. The department chair writes them and they are incredible hard. Dont expect any extra credit or curves. I barely passed the class with a D and went to every lecture and si.
Good professor, explains things pretty clearly. Most importantly, he explains a lot of the theory behind why you do some of the things you do in accounting which is very helpful in understanding the content and saves you a lot of memorization. Whenever I had a question he would email me back within a day or two at most.
his class is not entirely possible the topics in 401 are similar to 201 i would say that if you received a B+ in 201 you would be fine in his class he is a great lecturer and is open to help. tests are 50% of your grade pop quizzes are based on practice problems done in class so no need to study beforehand gives lots of practice material for tests
I've graduated this semester with my masters, and when looking back at all of the acc professors, I can say that Jackson was definitely one of the best ones. He's organized, explains material very well, fair grader (unlike Vreeland), very helpful, reasonably difficult tests, and the grade doesn't solely depend on exams. I truly respect him.
I always enjoyed accounting classes, but this class is the exception. Read the book carefully and frequently and stay on top of the homework and other assignments. Give yourself at least ten hours a week to work on this class and attempt to find a study group to attend. There is strength in numbers with this course, working alone is a bad choice
This class was the only difficult class that I had at UNR. I was simply going for a minor in accounting and ACC 201 and 202 were simple. This class is very difficult and is 201 on steroids. I failed every exam but passed wit ha D+. He gives practice exams but the real exams are completely different. At least half the class failed every exam.
Professor Jackson's class is very straight forward. No extra credit is offered, there is a homework assignment, learn smart assignment, and quiz for every chapter. His lectures are dry and the tests are hard. Attendance is mandatory. Read the text book and go to PASS sessions in order to pass.
Professor Jackson was probably one of the hardest professors I've ever taken. His tests are so rigorous your head hurts after you complete one. He's really good at throwing curveballs on test, so be prepared. If you have to take this class with him, good luck. It's a LOT of work.
Dr Jackson is an incredibly brilliant man. He really shines in explaining the logic behind some of the more arcane aspects of Accounting. He sometimes struggles to explain mechanics thoroughly enough but if you ask him to explain things again he is happy to bring his entire lecture to a halt simply to do it over in a way that makes sense to you.
If you are not planning on being an accounting major, I would advise you to steer clear from Mark Jackson. He is no help when you want to find a way to get a better grade and is extremely unclear when it comes to his grading policies and expectations on the tests. His tests are fill in the blank and very difficult.
Financial ACC 1 is definitely not easy to grasp firsthand; however, Dr. Jackson gives examples, hw, a project, & extra problems to provide greater practice and insightful learning. A strong grade is still possible, but you must work for your grade (i.e. spend large amounts of time enough to fully understand the concepts and applications). Good luck
Mark Jackson is a great professor. I like the way he teaches the class. Lots of homework! Tests are heavy, but he says the topics relating to the tests. NO extra credits. Every lecture pop-up quizzes. GREAT class for Accounting major.
Do not take this class unless you are an accounting major. He is an extremely hard teacher and does not leave much leeway for students to succeed. He has a high fail rate and the amount of work in the class is ridiculous for even just a passing grade. If you are a finance major like myself, do yourself a favor and do the economics emphasis.
The course is definitely a bigger challenge than what you may be used to at this point. Dr. Jackson does a pretty good job teaching the material, but there are a few subtle things to note for tests that he doesn't exactly cover it well in lecture. Always ALWAYS attend PASS sessions when you can, even if you think you understand the material.
Challenging course. Graded by a few things. Tries to trick you on exams so go to the PASS sessions or his office hours to verify that you understand the material.
The most important thing about Prof. Jackson is that he's a great teacher. I've graduated and a CPA now, and I still remember his lectures and use it in my job. If you think his class is too hard, you might consider switching majors. Attend the class, take notes, use extra credit, study for exams (consider group-studying), and you will get an A.
All I have to say is GO TO PASS SESSIONS at least twice a week! The more you go the better you will understand the materials that will be on your exams. There are 2 group write-ups. A long practice set, which you have a month to do. In-class quizzes, so I highly recommend going to class. And extra credit is the learn smarts, 100 for each chapter.
Gret professor, but definitely easier to understand with the PASS leader. The learn smarts give you 2-3% of extra credit so do them!! The third test is the most difficult if you make it past the first two, the final was much more difficult than expected as well. He is very helpful in his office hours too.
Dr. Jackson is one of the best professors that I have ever had. In his 201 class, he inspired me to pursue accounting as my major. THIS IS A DIFFICULT CLASS, but if you keep up with reading and study sufficiently, you WILL pass. Accounting isn't easy folks... but it is very rewarding. Earn your grade.
You will learn more about taco trucks than you ever thought possible. Will likely be the first really difficult upper division class you will take but plenty manageable if you put in the effort.
Mark Jackson is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. His knowledge of the field makes me question why he isn't teaching at an Ivy League school. Passing his course does require that you put the time in but he gives you the resources necessary to pass and if you need any help he is there for you. Also great sense of humor. 10/10.
This is the most time consuming class ever. Many people will say that its hard, but its just SO MUCH WORK. He assigns big projects that take up to 15 hours to complete pretty much back to back. He doesnt take attendance, but if you dont go, you will be screwed on the exams. Go to the PASS sessions, and you should get a C or B in this class.
The professor is great but for each exam there is content we have not practiced in class before. I don't know if that is intentional since we switched to a new book. Neither the homework, quizzes, or PASS sessions touch 50% of what are in exams.
He is a tough grader, but that does help you get ready for more difficult classes. He is fair about his grades and cares about the students who take the time to talk to him. He doesn't change grades based on sympathy, but will give pointers on how to improve.
Pretty sure he gets pegged on the weekends. Nothing you do on the homework will ever be on the exams. Pass leader is 100% more competent in teaching and better at explaining problems. If you have a job and can't make it to pass session just change majors because his teaching is going to leave you confused and good luck getting any help from him.
He definitely wants the course to be hard for you to pass. He is understanding and fair, but does not teach to the test at all. If you want to get an A in this class, you must attend lectures and practice practice practice. When he says "if it's talked about in class, it is fair game for the lecture" he means it. Even if it was briefly mentioned
Do not miss any assignments. Reading the textbook will not help you to answer multiple questions on exams. Do not miss the pass sections. Very similar to exam questions. If you have a chance, take this class at UNLV. He is the weirdest instructor so far at UNR.
I just took this class for summer for the mini session and its the most time-consuming class I have ever endured. This class is more work than my semester classes. I advise anyone that if you expect anything easy taking his class, it is not the case. He wants to make sure you know the material and keep studying like it's the only thing you do.
Very unclear on what to study for on the exams. Uses pre-generated McGrawHill questions with 4-6 of his own written questions. Screwed up on 4 questions he wrote himself on Exam 3 and made students indirectly take a "mini exam" to recover missed points. (The only questions he wrote, he screwed up). If you have a social life, kiss it goodbye.
If you dont attend PASS you are going to have an extremely difficult time in this course. Mark doesnt have the ability to efficiently teach the material that he puts on the exams. He expects the student to take time out of there week AGAIN for PASS. Tries to bring students down and tell them they should switch majors if they cant understand him.
Tests hard n heavy, PRACTICE ALOT. Jackson does sound a bit condescending sometimes, but he's responsible caring willing to help. Regardless of your 201 grade, you should try this class b/c it's the first class you'll touch the ACC in-depth, & there's nothing bad/ashamed if you dropped this class b/c you saved time money & mental health. Best luck!
This class is extremely time consuming, and it really does not need to be. It takes so long to read the chapters, and he expects you to have read the chapter before the lectures. The homework assignments are insanely long and take forever. The tests are quite difficult. This is not a class you can get away without putting the time in, but GET CHEGG
At the beginning of class, he spoke condescendingly. There is a program you must pass 80% or above or you fail it. He said if we didn't pass it, we would be unlikely to pass his class. I did all the work and couldn't pass. He reinforced this often with his comments. I changed my major. This is a weed-out class, he seemed to enjoy that.
For my situation, I was able to put in the work he expects students to, I was only taking 4 classes and my other classes were extremely easy, giving me so much time to focus on this class. If youre not in that situation, be expected to struggled bc the workload is heavy. I read the book and took super good notes and attended all PASS sessions.
I took this class for the summer 21 mini term and this was a very hard course. He flies through the lectures, but wants to make sure you understand the material. I suggest to pick a different professor instead of him because he was not a very good teacher at all.
Professor Jackson definitely knows his stuff but, he is a TOUGH grader. He doesn't curve exams and there are quizzes after every class. The first two weeks of the semester you are studying for ALEKS which you have to get an 80% on to get credit. After that you have to do a simulator where you do all the accounting for a fake company. HARD CLASS!!
Professor Jackson is a caring and reasonable teacher. He makes accounting topics relevant and interesting. His tests are extremely difficult and cover a lot of material. The median of exam 2 and 3 were in the 50% and 60% range only ten students passed the final exam which he said was normal. Test taking skills are key to passing ACC 401.
This class is really time consuming. There is a quiz, homework, and an extra credit assignment every week. Make sure to do the extra credit assignments, they saved me as exams are fairly difficult. Be sure to study for the exams!
This isn't a simple class that you study for the exams and pass. I highly recommend going over the practice exams he posts since he pulls the same questions sometimes for the exams you take. It is really similar as in format and makes you comfortable for the actual thing. Also, I never went to the pass sessions but somehow did okay. Good luck!
I took ACC 201 as an online course with Prof Jackson and if you don't watch the lectures, you will have an extremely hard time in the class. Each week there is a homework, quiz, and extra credit assignment. The EC actually helps a lot so I would recommend doing them even though they are really time consuming.
Much harder and time consuming than it should be. Isn't very approachable, as he is kind of condescending. Exams are tough and homework assignments take forever.
He is very knowledgeable about accounting, and overall a good professor. The exams are not worth that much of your grade, they are tough though. The homework is also really difficult, it definitely is a "weeding out class."
Great Professor, really hard class. 401 is naturally a demanding class but Jackson is a great teacher. He is very fair and offers so many resources for you to succeed. Being organized and disciplines is a must for this class. Find a smart kid, sit next to them in class and study with them. Once again, great professor, really really tough class.
Accounting 401 is difficult but, Jackson is great at explaining and teaching this course. If you don't understand something go to office hours early to get help or you will fall behind. Most of his practice exams are just like his exams but might have some trick questions and are slightly different but if you study those you will be fine.
I took this course online during spring semester and it is easily my worst course experience. Professor Jackson, defers everything in this course to McGraw Hill connect, which if you are not familiar with, STEER CLEAR, these are the most time consuming, boring, repetitive, and unhelpful assignments ever. Avg test scores of 60 or less and no curve
Worst professor I have ever taken at the UNR. Extremely condescending/rude when going to office hours or asking questions. He makes this class way harder then it has to be. Financial reporting is a tough subject, but his attitude towards the class is unnecessary. Unfortunately he is the only professor that teaches 401.
I was very nervous to take Professor Jackson's class after seeing his rate my professor, but he as a person is pretty nice and very knowledgeable. However, his class is definitely harder than it needs to be and if you take this class online expect to be doing 30 hours of homework a week at least. Tests are proctored, multiple choice but difficult.
Tests average D to C. Then proceeds to say we didnt study enough. Failed class due to insanely hard tests. Weekly homework can take 4+ hours. Doesnt teach, only reads off lecture slides. Nice guy, bad teacher. Would NOT recommend.
This class in incredibly demanding, if you are taking it i would recommend only taking 4 classes because this class demands about 10 to 15 hours outside of class weekly. Final in cumulative and the 3 midterms and final is 50% of your grade, you can fail the exams but as long as you get 100% on the quizes & HW you'll pass, but barely.
Professor Jackson is a tough teacher no doubt. The class is incredibly demanding and although attendance isn't mandatory GO EVERY DAY! He can come off condescending at times, but he truly does have the best intentions. If you put it true genuine effort (go daily, complete homework) you should get the C with no problem. But pay serious attention.
Professor Jackson is a great professor. The class is difficult but he is more than willing to help. Reading the textbook, going to office hours, and participating in lectures are my biggest pieces of advice for anyone who takes this class.
Jackson is something else, the class is exceptionally OD. He treats the class as if its the real CPA exam (even though he has never taken the exam.) This class is very time consuming when it doesnt need to be. yes the material is dense but it's doable with a reasonable professor. he says the exams test understanding but they are meant to trick you.
The nature of 401 and accounting in general is what makes it a very challenging class. Fortunately, I believe Jackson is one of the best to teach it since he knows the material so well and knows what makes it hard for students. If you don't have the diligence/care to spend 6+ hours a week, then don't do it and don't blame anyone else for it.
Professor Jackson is a good teacher, but the class is pretty tough. You really have to work hard to earn your grade. The first midterm is usually easier than the others, so make sure to give it your best shot and aim for a good score.
Professor Jackson does not care about his student's success. He expects for students to be master's after 1 time hearing something. He can be very condescending as well, like constantly bragging about his low passing rate for the class. His expectations of students are way too high and it's ridiculous that he is the only 401 professor.
This class had so much work. Reading, smart book, extra credit quiz, and a homework, plus exams, they are proctored but with a notecard. Lectures reused from prof Hunt. Only reason I had an A is because of multiple tries on homework, graded on participation sometimes. Exams were rough, do all of the assignment and extra credit it'll make it easier.
Jackson's class is tough but not impossible. Be sure to attend lecture and complete all homework assignments. Exams are rigorous but he allows a notecard. Memorizing definitions or formulas won't help you on the exam, he really tests your overall understanding of a subject and how it applies. Knowledgeable on the material and will help you.
Professor Jackson is definitely knowledgeable about accounting but he has no clue how to teach it. Be sure to study extensively before tests and really know the subject because memorization won't work. Make sure you understand exactly what a question is asking and how to answer it. He doesn't test memorization he tests understanding entirely.
Professor Jackson is very knowledgeable about accounting and he really wants his students to succeed but he is very unrealistic with his expectations. This is a very time consuming class and if you can't fully dedicate to it, you probably won't pass.
VERY rough tests; had a few times where I didn't have the time to complete questions. Gives a lot of extra credit, which saved me. Practice for your life's worth. Loved his dry humor. Go to class; he will go through problems that are on the test. 2 major projects. You'll feel like you're drowning, but it'll feel great when you do pass.
