Dr. Johnson is an excellent professor and is highly recommended. He is knowledgeable, interesting and fair. Johnson can really teach.
He expects a lot with essays, but he'll help you if you need it. Really nice guy.
Fantastic professor. He's very approachable, and really takes the time to sit down with his students and tell them how they can improve. Shakespeare with him his great. He DOES focus a bit on the historical sources, but they always prove to be valuable by the time we're finish studying the play. A+ prof. Take his class.
He's a really good professor. Demanding, but kind; he is a great introduction to Shakespeare and will help introduce all the relevant themes in Shakespeare studies. He even takes time out of his schedule to read the plays together with willing students at a local pub. Overall great prof.
I hated this class. I got a good mark but it was too demanding and he was not clear at all. I do not recommend him.
When asked foe help he does no1 provide any. I have go to other students to understand the work being taught. I had nasty teachers he is up there on the list with them.
Not bad, but I haven't the darnest clue how to figure out what the heck he wants on a test! If we get a guidline or something it would be loads helpful instead of grasping at straws to figure them out. We aren't mind readers sir, please give us good pups a bone once in a while. Let us know what you're looking for in our writing.
Please don't cut the Workshops and the Readings! I've had so much more fun than I ever thought I'd have in this class because of all the extra time we get to have with you! You give up so much of your time for us and I am so grateful! It gets us so well aquainted with the texts and we get to hear what you have to think, it's the best resource!
Extremely approachable for additional help, makes himself available for additional help, genuinely cares, very knowledgable on a range of subjects.
One of the best profs at the U- you must experience his class. Very passionate and extremely intelligent, but not to a threatening level; he's very warm and approachable. He gives you a lot of opportunities to do well via assignments, tests, &quizzes. The readings can be somewhat hefty, but he explains them well. Brilliant.
Dr. Johnston is a really nice man. Yes, he's also very knowledgeable. My only issue is that he rushes through the material a bit, opting for coverage over depth. Still, I recommend him and I would take another class with him myself.
Dr. Johnston is a very good professor. He has a passion for his work that comes through in the classroom. If you are willing to work and study hard you are more than capable of getting a good mark in his class.
Awesome guy, but not always very clear in lectures. Tricky marker. But overall this class has been a lot of fun and he's very enthusiastic about his work. GOOD BOY!
Fairly difficult marker. He tends to give marks based on whether or not you give what he's looking for, so even if you know the material and give good answers, you may not be right. He's a pleasure in lecture, and he made me enjoy the class a lot more. He's very approachable if you need help. I would definitely recommend him.
Prof. Johnston teaches his class adequately, but his ridiculous haircut is often too distracting. His voice can be monotone and fails to capture the audiences attention, and certain words he uses are flamboyant or are not real words to begin with, which can be annoying. However, I do appreciate his effort to include interesting details in lectures.
Professor Johnston has a vast array of knowledge, not to mention the class is well structured. I particularly appreciate his understanding towards first year students (ex. quizzes instead of writing assignment). Professor Johnston has found a good medium to assess his students. He does however need to speak more loudly and annunciate more often.
Mr. Johnston has a real passion and knowledge for the subject he teaches, as evidenced in his engaging (though slighty sprawling) lectures. He is reasonably sympathetic to students, using a forgiving quiz system and two-part test, rather than a load of essays and a hefty midterm. I do wish he were clearer on what he was looking for on tests.
Dr. Johnston is clearly a genious. His lectures are extensive and often end in questions. Reading varies from incredibly difficult, to next to nothing. As long as you do the reading and pay attention to him in class, you'll ace the 7 quizzes and tests. Dr.Johnston, don't change a thing Your class is a great introduction to university for 1st semes.
Johnston clearly has a boundless passion for English literature and it is apparent in his incredibly intricate and well-worded lectures. His classroom dynamic is one that I relate to and excel in more than any teacher I've had. His rhetoric is unmatched which is quite enjoyable for me personally. The material is sometimes great but mostly dry.
Johnston is my favorite professor, teaches the class with enthusiasm and humor. The only thing I would hope for him to improve is to clarify what terms are going to appear on the quizzes, maybe write more of them on the white board or even pass out a handout in the beginning of the semester of all of the terms that are going to show up.
I really like how the work is split up, definitely keep it this way because it has a lot of room for improvement. For future classes maybe try to give the lecture before the quiz because that would be really helpful.Oh and I think he has a really helpful. :D
Was a hard marker and there is lots of course material to learn. But the break up of the midterm into two tests was great and the readings were interesting.
I love Johnston! He's very good for a first year introductory English class. The idea of 7 quizzes and no midterm is awesome, however I would prefer if better definitions were used on the tests. I feel like I know the significance of the period very well, but I cannot explain them on the tests if the definitions inhibit that process.
Dr.Johnston has an incredible ability to showcase the classic works covered in this class. He's revealed the brilliance of the likes of Chaucer and Spenser. They've gone from stuffy books with English I couldn't understand into captivating epics with amazing hidden qualities. And he's provided the tools for us to find our own conclusions.GreatClass!
Really like the idea of 7 quizzes! The readings were sometimes interesting, sometimes not so much... especially when FAIRY QUEEN is spelled wrong.Dr. Johnston is very reliable, and he teaches the material very well! I would only appreciate perhaps a guide line or mini power point in lecture... my notes are all over the place! Great Class.
I really enjoyed this class and Dr. Johnston. I liked that he had 7 quizzes and two tests instead of writing assignments. His lectures tended to be confusing; however, one could tell he is passionate about literature. It would be helpful to have a guideline as to what what touched upon in the lecuture. Overall, I would recommend this class!
Dr Johnston is very intelligent. His delivery style was eloquent and interesting, yet sometimes abstract and can be confusing. Quizzes on the most part related to reading comprehension; yet, he would at times quiz students on terms he did not bring up directly in class. Good prof overall, but be prepared to work hard.
Tough Class definately makes you work. Loved that the midterm is divided into 2 tests. Takes off a bit of pressure. Quizzes also an awesome idea (you actually have to study for these). If you do the reading and try you will be fine in this course. Johnston's lectures are sporadic because he gets so excited about the material. Take good notes.
Mark is a pleasant guy and teaches his lectures with much enthusiasm. You can tell that he loves what he does. I find the class hard, but I am doing well. There is more reading in this class than any other class I've taken - but it IS english! I took his Comedy class and failed because I didn't do the reading, so be sure to keep up!
For the most part, this was quite a good class. Informative, enjoyable, challenging, but not too tough. The only complaint I have is the emphasis on a group project. I think it's stressful and irritating to have so much of my grade rely on 8 other people.
Enjoyed this class, but expected nothing less. He is so engaging, and loves what he does.Great idea with quizzes, gets you reading what you have to.Complaint:huge group project with 8 other fulltime students that requires many, many meetings. try setting that up. I would take a midterm over a group project.fun, but at a university level, impractical
He knows what he's talking about and is very passionate about it. His classes keep you interested. Sometimes his lectures can be a little all over the map (going back and forth between topics). Evaluations are fair. His tests aren't too bad as long as you are well prepared. He's a little too sarcastic at times but sometimes it's funny.
Johnston clearly knows what he's talking about. He's lectures really challenge you to THINK about the material which is good. The quizzes are designed to reward those who read the textbook, once again which is good. The two tests instead of a mid-term is great, easy on stress-levels. Great course that seems daunting as a first year. Good job Mark!
Please sir. IF there is another group assignment next semester, I beg of you, please make the groups smaller. It was ridiculous trying to get all 9 people together, too many people slacked because there were so many others to pick up the work, and everyone was on each others nerves. Otherwise, fantastic course! You are awesome!
Although I would normally find the subject matter uninteresting, Johnston managed to make it interesting while still getting his point across. This is because he clearly KNOWS what hes talking about, and he clearly LOVES the subject. I also loved the way the course was structured (no midterm FTW). I would recommend his course to anyone :)
He had a lot of interest in hsi topic. Lots of references to threatre and history...which I personally didn't like. Group project was a hassle with such a large group. Overall, a really nice an approachable person who showed a lot of interest, which makes you interested in the subject too.
Early British Lit - Very fair class. If you kept up with readings and attended class, the quizzes, tests, and exam were very reasonable. I liked the midterm being broken into two tests. 1 Assignment was easy if you put through into it, definite mark booster. Enjoyed his style and humour!

I had mixed feelings about Johnston..while he was a good professor,I really didn't enjoy the class. The material was extremely dry, despite his enthusiastic delivery. That being said,as long as you did the readings, the quizzes were an easy way to boost up your mark. The tests had obscure definitions though, which brought down my mark.
Well sir, round 2 was amazing! I loved the material that we studied this semester, and I can't wait to apply my knowledge this season! ;) I liked having the research paper in the project, however the group sizes aren't doable. I think if you went with maybe 6 (7 max)next semester, that'll be more manageable. It was a pleasure to be your student!
Group project was fun, but hard to co-ordinate. I would prefer to have a midterm in this class as I think they help prepare you for the final. I would like Shakespeare to be more about the actual plays than the history behind them -I found this too boring and it was not the reason I took this class at all.
I thought the lack of a midterm was pretty cool. It has been said that this set up might affect how prepared we are for the final, but to be honest, I think the final was pretty easy to prepare for. I really loved the set up, and the group project, though I would try to somehow make the groups a little smaller, if that is possible. Class was fun. :

I really enjoyed this class. I liked the idea of 6 quizes and being able to miss or bomb one. This really helped me out. I also liked having 2 big tests instead of a midterm. You really need to put time into the class though. Honestly, I'm terrified for the final.
Extraordinary professor. Had him last semester. It's an english class that an enthusiast has always wanted. Definitely will take his Shakespeares. His brilliancy offers analysis and facts about the texts that blew my mind every class. Perfect syllabus; though I was never sure what he wanted on tests despite explanations bc I had some funny grading.
Like the quizzes, keep them coming! You may want to consider making them less tricky, though. Like the final group project. It would be nice to have the ability to use a stage in the drama building for performances. Dillon Hall is not a great space for theatre. A review of dates/venues and major themes before final exam would be helpful as well.
Liked the changes to the final project this semester. It was nice having 2 scenes and 2 days to work with. The Question period at the end was terrifying, but probably a good thing. I would still like to see smaller groups for this project. Coordinating 8 people is challenging. Also, with so many dates and sources, a big review would be helpful :)
Thoroughly enjoyed this course, amazing professor and very interesting and enjoyable lectures. I think the marking can be a little irrelevant in terms of reflecting what we have learned in the course; some quiz questions and comments received from the final project didn't seem necessary as a representation of material I had learned.
The quizzes were a much better way to check comprehension than a midterm, and the final project was a great way to put everything together. I don't think this course would work as well as a full year course and should be kept in separate sections
Professor Johnston is always available to help, and even answers questions via Facebook. He is engaging and makes you want to attend lecture every day. I didn't miss a single class, and I genuinely enjoyed doing his work and studying for his quizzes.
Wonderful class, even better prof! He brings together both literary and theatrical aspects and explores them in depth. Group project was great. it was nice having it spread out over two days - more time for prep. Quizzes and assignments were a fair and accurate method of evaluation. Favourite: Twelfth Night; Least Favourite: Measure for Measure
Johnston is a fantastic professor. The course material he chooses is really interesting and the way he presents it makes you want to learn. His tests and exams aren't easy, but they are fair. Comic Vision is a class you'll look forward to going to. Thanks for a great semester, Dr. Johnston. See you in Shakespeare I in the fall :)
I loved this Comic Vision course! The quizzes are a great way to boost your mark and having your lowest score dropped provided a bit of leniency. I thought having two separate tests intead of a midterm is fantastic, and they are quite fair to what is learned in class. Definitely a recommended prof and class!
Lectures are enjoyable. He wants to hear from students and class discussions are encouraged. However, with such a heavy reading list and so many pieces to cover, it is unrealistic for a class of 90+ students to all contribute enough to class discussion in order to attain a 10% participation grade. A short analytical paper should replace this.
One of few profs I've had who has actually cared whether or not I learn the material he is teaching. Testing is a fair an accurate reflection of the material, and the 10% participation mark is a great way to boost your grade. Most importantly, what makes Johnston a good prof is his passion for the material he teaches.
One suggestion, if the class becomes a two semester thing, devote a few classes to studying shakespeare's sonnets, and maybe even have a short paper due on one of them, to ease the weight of the group project/exam. I enjoy the lack of a midterm in exchange for the short comprehension quizzes. dr. J is an amazing prof, super helpful and oober smart.
He is a clear and effective speaker. It is obvious he loves teaching Shakespeare! His enthusiasm made me want to learn the plays. The classroom is fun and interactive. If you pay attention and take good notes, his tests are fair. I recommend him for sure! :)
Prof. Mark is one of the best professor at the U of Windsor. His speaks very clearly, & never waist our time. I took Shak. 1 & 2 with him, & i highly recommend him. i loved his quizes, and the 10% participation that gave me a chance to boost my mark. i never skipped any of his classes, and i loved the class discussion. i loved his sense of humour.
Prof. Johnston is an intelligent, funny, understandable, wonderful, and very handsome professor. i don't think that 350 words are enough to describe him. so please don't hesitate to take Shak. 1 & 2 with him, you're going to love him and his courses. i know i enjoyed these 2 courses with him. just go to class and take good notes and participate.:)
Prof. Johnston is amazing. The first class I had with him I swore I would not take another however after I took Shak, 1 and 2 I learned to love him. He is halarious and an amazing professor as long as you participate and go to class. You will not get an easy good grad however if you talk to him and ask for help he is more then willing.
I've had the pleasure of taking many courses with Dr. Johnston. Hands down, the most influential teacher I've had to this day. An absolute pleasure to attend class (sounds crazy, no?). Loved the material because he made it easy to work with. Don't think twice - he's the paragon of professors.
Clear speaker, very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the material. Helpful at office hours. Lectures are a little loosely structured making them hard to follow sometimes. Asks lots of questions to students, would prefer more concrete explanations of things. Group project is reason enough not to take this course; too ambitious, groups too large.
Great prof! I agree with comment below, many questions asked but rarely follows through on the answer. Group project is overwhelming, I would much rather have a midterm than this project. But I love Dr. Johnston and would continue to take courses with him! Favourite class.
Great prof, favourite this term.
Dr. Johnston truly has a passion for the material that he teaches, however he tends to speak over the class and doesn't help us share in his passion for Shakespeare. He also expects us to have a deep understanding of the material. The group presentation is ALOT of work and the quizzes are really particular and in depth.
Fantastic prof! I look forward to coming to this class every day. Never knew how much I liked Shakespeare before this class, probably because of Dr. Johnston's enthusiasm for the course. I will be taking Shakespeare II and any other course I can get with Dr. Johnston. Thank you for making this course great!
Great class, but not totally engaging. Genuinely wants his students to succeed and affords his students every opportunity to do so.
Amazing prof! Love his lectures!Group project are great and is very fair with quizes and papers. My only comment is that I wish he would have more scansion assignments. Maybe cut quizes in half and offer a small scans on each play instead. It's just something that takes practice to learn and only one assignment doesn't help. Take this great class!
Very informative class. Engaging conversations that help increase comprehension of texts. Quizzes are fair and having one "freebie" with a bad mark is beneficial. Increase group input in class rather than prof's point of view at all times.
This Professore is awe inspiring, not to mention helpful. The scansion required for part of the written assignment was something he helped me understand. I loved his lectures and his humourous tone.
Quizzes, tests, and assignments are all fair and challenging at the same time. There was never anything I didn't understand or think I couldn't ace. Really good lectures and fun classes!
Excellent professor, he is extremely clear and testing is very fair. Only downside is that for the amount of material we had to cover, a lot of time was used to hand back tests/quizzes that really cut into the lectures. Would be nice if there was way to get those things back to us without using up lecture time.
SUCH an amazing Prof! If you attend class, take good notes, and do the readings, you will do great. The breakdown of your mark is fair as well - not too much pressure on the midterm and final exam, and the quizzes are a real grade booster! I wish we had more time to get into some of the longer texts studied, but all in all, it is a great class! :)
I would rather have my own research paper instead of a group project.
I could listen to Dr. Johnston lecture all day! He's funny, engaging, and incredibly intelligent. The lectures themselves are very informative and, as long as you are taking good notes, they more than prepare you for the tests. The quizzes are also easy marks (if you do the readings). No complaints - this was a great first year course!
I found professor Johnston to be very helpful and knowledgeable. I was only disappointed with one aspect of his course, and that concerned the scansion assignment. I felt that not enough attention was given to this assignment and was unhappy that there was no workshop to help us gain a better understanding of it.
Amazing professor. This professor knows how to structure a course. Quizzes are excellent (though the odd quiz will be unfair). A little bit of a hard marker. I liked the group project and prefer it over a research paper. However, I also had a great group. Great course! I look forward to Shakespeare II next semester! :)
Great professor, great class. Johnston know how to give a lecture with loosing the classes attention. His class may have a heavy work load, but manages to play it out where it doesn't seem like it. Everything is well paced.
Dr.Johnston is an intelligent man with a passion for Shakespeare. His lectures are good but he does not teach the things we don't know yet. He EXPECTS us to know. The group project can ruin your entire semester and that is unfair. Would have preferred a chance to do a mid-term or research paper. Group work was a detriment to my entire semester.
This is a hard class to start off university with because it's a 200 level course. Johnston has a test almost, if not every week of class. I find it hard to focus on his lectures and and I also find them confusing. He's a really nice, funny, and understanding guy; but, his class and I really don't get along well. P.s.-always bring your textbook.
Dr. Johnston is very helpful, but sometimes he emphasizes the wrong material. Test questions are predictable, but the results are not. After w a great test, I was shocked to see a 60 on it after. The class format is great, although the questions on pt 1 of the quizzes should be changed (too random). Some texts should be cut.Scansion= lower weight.
The group project has ruined my mark and I'm not even sure I can look the prof in the eye after that fiasco of a presentation, sorry Dr J. I would MUCH rather do a 12 page paper. If groupswork coninutes, allow students to select select their own groups. Would it be possible to choose between a paper and a group project in the future?
I recorded the lectures and brought my laptop for the notes which helped a lot. I think this should be a smaller class although there isn't a lot Dr. J could do about that. Also I think getting a microphone that clips on so he can walk around more would help. Loved the class people need to just do what he says and they'll do fine.
I wish the terms had been made more clear before quizzes and tests.
The class was very informative, and i learned a lot but the terms that would appear on the quizzes should be made more clear.
Material is really interesting. Laptop is useful because he speaks really fast but what he's saying is quite fascinating! Lots of work, but worth it.
I liked having quizzes better than a midterm (I've had midterms with him in another class that were very difficult). Group project was great, everyone will have a few slacker group members but the large group size compensated for that. Only criticism is he speaks very fast, sometimes I can't catch all the names and dates. Excellent prof overall.
I really enjoyed this class. The group project was a great way to boost my mark and I preferred it to the idea of writing a 15 page research paper. He is very passionate about the topic and his marking is fair and he clearly tells you what to do to improve.
Although the amount of reading for EBL was a lot and almost killed me, I learned a lot from this class and highly enjoyed the lectures. I also appreciate that Dr. J gives you the mark you deserve. It is totally possible to get an A if you try. Multiple quizzes and tests were also preferred because they provided more opportunities for good marks :)
Dr. Johnston is one of the best English profs I've ever had. Although EBL is an endurance race, he makes the classes fun and interesting. Having two tests also helped limit the amount of studying per test which was much appreciated. The way this course was broken down definitely set students up for success - Way to go on a great course Dr. J!
Johnston was an amazing professor. His lectures were interesting and the readings were great. He showed enthusiasm towards his readings which made them even better for the students! I definitely recommend him!
Johnston explains the texts very well, and you can see how much interest he has in the works. The key to doing well in the class is to closely read the texts, and to DEFINITELY attend every class and take good notes, because those notes will help you to do well on the tests (trust me). Overall,Johnston was a great prof! Thanks for a great semester!
awesome teacher, really brought a dull topic alive.
Johnston is a great instructor who relays enthusiasm for course material and makes an honest effort to help students reach their full potential. My only criticism is the immense amount of class time wasted in returning assessments back to students. A possible solution might be to have a "pick-up" time twice a week run by GAs?
One of my better profs this term. You really have to do the readings, but if you don't get them his lectures are very enlightening. He was clear and helpful, though he got a bit repetitive trying to get through to some people. At the same time, no one has any right to complain about a bad mark.
I really enjoyed this class and Johnston as a teacher. I think everything is explained really well and the quizzes instead of a midterm are appreciated. I hate doing group work but this project is not bad and an excellent mark booster. :)
I, of course, truly enjoyed this class. Once again Mark, I have enjoyed your lectures, they always make my day better. My only suggestion for the course would be to do Twelfth Night instead of The Tempest simply because I found that I could relate all of the theories to that play. Other than that, I had an amazing time :) Thanks for everything!
Great prof, great class. only suggestion is to add an at home written assignment to the course to reduce the blow of the quizzes, which take up much more room than they should as far as the final grade goes. Quizzes don't benefit those who actually read the texts, at least that's what I found. Thanks for the great semester :)
I really enjoyed the class, Johnston was very clear in his lectures, spoke slowly enough for one to get all the information. I really enjoyed the quizzes as oppose to a midterm. The group project was challenging but was fun to work on. All around I really liked this course and Johnston's teaching style, he wants his students to succeed.
Best professor I've ever had. You make me love my major. You know how to structure a course. I suggest for next year that you do not include a midterm. I also think you should include attendance. The group project went well for me because I had an excellent group. Peers should not mark. Most people lower the presenter's mark on purpose.
Such a great professor. He made every class entertaining with his lectures. He speaks very clearly and everything makes sense, and he's able to answer students' questions clearly. I liked that we had two tests rather than a midterm; it helps with our hectic schedules! Just read and come to class and one can get an A. Don't change sir! :)
Dr. Johnston is one of the best profs I have had! He is really passionate about Shakespeare and it makes the class enjoy it even more. The quizzes are beneficial to students and to the classroom environment as they ensure that each person has read the play before discussing it. I would suggest any class with Dr. Johnston! Keep up the amazing work!
Professor Johnston is a great teacher who really considers his students. Attendance isn't required, but quizzes are an easy grade if you read the books and attend class. Do your work, show up to class, and reap the rewards! Truly a professor who tries to make class interesting and beneficial, while fair to all students.
While Johnston is an excellent teacher and you do leave the class learning things, he is known to throw down loads of rhetorical questions. Most students don't know if they should answer them or if they should consider it testable material. He is a fair grader, but the best part is all the comments he leaves; they are a gold mine to do better.
I took Comic Vision and Later British Literature with him and I absolutely loved both! He speaks with great clarity, is always enthusiastic about the material, engages all the students and really knows what he's talking about! I loved attending his classes and hated missing them! He is unbelievably helpful, friendly, understanding and fair marker!
Leads great discussions. You leave the class thinking critically. He seems always prepared, I can see a good amount of sticky notes in his texts. It is obvious he likes to discuss and enjoys the material which is a big plus to me.
I enjoy his lectures, making it fun and fair. All the tragic plays I've read were amazingly well chosen. I also like the structure of his grading (quizzes, midterm and exam). Overall, Prof. Johnson is a great professor allowing me both to equally learn and have fun during my time in his class!
Johnston is very professional in his teaching methods. I found him to be hard yet very fair in the way in which he marked. Loved his humor and his ever changing hair color. Keep up the good work;)
He is clearly passionate about the content. I liked the structured, humourous, theoretical, and philosophical discussions; and the quizzes because they ensured that you did a critical reading and were an indication on how you were doing. An essay would allow students who are too shy to contribute in discussions to demonstrate critical thinking.
It is clear he that is passionate about the material. I found the Tragic Vision material to be a little dry, but Professor Johnston does a good job of keeping you engaged and making the material more appealing and interesting. The quizzes threw me off because I did better on the one I didn't complete my readings for. Still a great professor though!
It is clear that the professor is very passionate about the course's material. I loved all of the texts we studied, especially since I found the prof very approachable. I would highly recommend this course to any first year English major.
Good teaching style, engaged students well, always good attitude Please keep Blasted. Only criticism: the theory part of the quizzes. A lot of the theory reading material was difficult to fully understand and draw important facts from. To be tested on such theory, without at least being partially taught it, seems off.
I like how plays and concepts studied earlier in the semester are returned to when studying other plays. I would suggest that Dr. Johnston provide a list of sources, dates, names, etc. that he will be referencing during lectures in either hardcopy form or on the overhead in class.
Dr. Johnston is such a great teacher. He is very passionate about every text we read in class. I had him for the comedy course, and was very excited to take tragic vision. His quizes are very helpful when it comes to a student's grade and preparing for the exam. His lectures are very intersting, and worth attending. Awesome semester!
Dr. Johnstons is an absolute pleasure to learn from. Out of all of my professors he expresses the most excitement for course material. Only criticism is that he sometimes speaks too fast and it's hard to keep up when note taking. He has done then impossible and made me into a fan of shakespeare. I love this class and highly recommend it to anyone!
Really great professor!
such a cutie pie. Always smiling and positive. I loved the texts we read and I loved the though-provoking questions he posed. it would be even cooler if he tied in current news events to his discussions. Loved his insights. Only suggestion: Some of the theory on quizzes was so difficult to read and understand and spark notes etc were not available.
Disappointed in the lack of close-reading and discussion thus far in the course. I respect Johnston as a Prof, but I wish he would focus less on trivial details about possible sources and more on major concepts. Evaluation has been fair and reasonable, and Johnston is always very available for help.
Non-English major and was absolutely wowed by Dr. Johnston's dedication. He is passionate about what he teaches and therefore classes are always informative and enjoyable. Class discussions were great and he tells you what to expect for examinations. He is very caring and helpful as he is ALWAYS there for you when you need help. One of the best!
Great class! One thing, Dr. Johnston: you go over a LOT in the lectures, and I write it all down, but I maybe mishear a date and of course it's on the quiz. Ah! I noticed that some of what you say is in the introductions for the Arden books, but they're huge; maybe you could give us a few page numbers in case we miss something important like that?
I think the key to doing well in Johnston's classes is really liking the material. He goes over a lot in a short time and in great detail, which is great if you enjoy it and terrible if you don't. Thankfully, I'm absolutely loving his Shakespeare class. It's clear he's really knowledgeable and passionate.
Dr. Johnston made Tragic Visions exciting and he was always very interested in helping his students and answering questions! He made the content easy to understand and his quizzes/tests were always fair! Awesome job!!:D
Fantastic prof! Super passionate and knowledgable about his work. I absolutely recommend his Shakespeare course-it's one of the few courses where I find myself paying attention for the full hour and twenty min. He can be tough, but as long as you pay attention in class and actually read the material (and note specific details!!), then you'll be OK.
A really fascinating class. Good professor, really passionate about what he teaches which is nice, although sometimes I feel like I'm being lectured at rather than taught to. Sometimes I feel like he lectures as if he's talking to a room full of Shakespearean scholars and I find myself scrambling to make sense of my notes.
I believe that the full-year course for Shakespeare is much more enlightening than the semester courses. You are given much more time for the assignments/projects, and you do not feel constrained to a specific range of time. In addition, you are able to better comprehend the material over a full year as opposed to cramming it in with other courses.
Sassypants is one of my favourite professors that I have had for a lecture class. It takes about half the semester to appreciate him, though; he spends a long time waiting for those who don't care to drop out. In his classes, if you care, you will have a wonderful experience. He's really down to earth once you get to know him. Chili4lyfe.
Stay cool, Dr. Johnston.
Easily my favourite prof in the eng. department. Already interesting enough in Early British Lit, and then his Shakespeare class takes that to the next level. Definitely recommend the Shakespeare course.
Dr. Johnston is a very nice professor. Always be present.. vital exam information is given during every lecture. Take note of what he quotes in class. He has 7 quizzes per semester. I think I would have preferred that he have half quizzes and half assignments. I think assignments would better represent our knowledge and capabilities.
Awesome man who loves what he teaches! Quizzes forced me to read the texts but i founf they really helped me gain confidance regarding talking about them!
Mostly hated the topic: depressing, but I DID learn despite the darkness. MJ's a good teacher, he lectures well. I wished he would answer more of our questions during lectures. He had a necessary passion. Funny & witty. He asked a lot of rhetorical/philosophical questions, which was frustrating at times. Tragedy: the ends don't justify the means.
I enjoyed the content of the class, as well as how interested and passionate Johnston was about it. Giving quizzes that only scrape the surface of the plays before we discussed them in depth seemed pointless to me. I'd rather be quizzed on more thought provoking questions or have short written assignments. His lectures were excellent, however.
Awesome teacher who is extremely fair in the grading of work and passionate about the subject matter. You're guaranteed to learn a lot in his class, but you have to attend lectures for that to occur. Not having any online slides to look at was helpful, because a lot of the things he discussed stuck with me and helped me on the exam. Terrific prof.
One of the most rewarding professors. He will really make you work for your grade, but if you do well you deserve it. He is really passionate about the course material, and is extremely knowledgable. The group project for this class was very difficult, so choose a group wisely. So great with students questions. Highly recommend.
Great prof. He's very passionate about the subject material and it's contagious! He does ask a lot of theoretical/rhetorical questions but it helps to practice answering them bc it helps with writing his exams. Connects course material cumulatively so don't just forget a unit once the week's over. Gives good hints for exam material @ lectures.
Rambles a lot. He doesn't give students a chance to write notes, since he talks quickly. I was often left wondering if what he said was relevant. He's passionate, but needs to slow down and pace himself better, especially if he wants class participation. His group projects are a nightmare(not the "group" part but the actual project's details).
I couldn't understand his instructions for assignments and talking to him one-on-one about what he wanted didn't help either. The group assignment was difficult only because my group didn't understand what he wanted us to do! The comments after he marked them were really rude, too, rather than constructive.
Testing readings before talking about in class a great way to get people to do them, but does favour those who can remember small details easily/do the reading the day before. Lectures seem to lack structure, and with no visuals hard to keep notes organized, unsure of what exactly is relating to what. Midterm/exam a lot of writing, felt rushed.
Lectures are interesting and engaging though it can be hard to know what is important for notes. Quizzes every week on the very long readings. I found the exams really hard; a whole bunch of students were still writing at the three hour mark, and I felt rushed, and the questions asked too much of you. Definitely a hard course for first years!
He is often available for consultation/to answer questions, however, his answers will be different each time and his instructions are often contradicting. He is horribly unclear and will penalize students for it. Also likes to mumble/ jam in random facts (which will be on the tests) without making it clear that what he is saying is even relevant.
Lots of reading but provides cheap textbook options
I had the opportunity to take Shakespeare 2 this Winter semester (2016), having taken the prior Shakespeare 1 in the fall. Johnston's lecturing is very enjoyable, though the assignments can be tricky to understand at first. He will give a lot of criticism, which may seem like he's overly critical, but it is mostly justified.
Overall Dr. Johnson was a great Professor. His lectures were interesting but beware the material is difficult. Do your readings and show up to lecture and you should be okay.
Lowest mark on my transcripts, yet I got one of the highest marks the class. Detailed. I found it counterproductive to give tests on stuff that had yet to be covered in class. HOWEVER, with all of that said, he gives INCREDIBLE lectures and is so easy to listen to, makes you really think about lit, his class is perfect for those who like challenge.
I found lectures to be disorganized and very random in progression. Difficult to follow what is happening. He is very interesting to listen to and knows his material well. Difficult to know what to focus on for quizzes and tests. While the plays were fun to read, theory background readings were confusing and useless.
Doesn't use blackboard to communicate with students, doesn't communicate with students unless in class. No slides to help with terms and to help students follow along. A lot of sometimes very boring and unused reading that you have to do. I wish he had a practice exam for students to help understand what he is looking for and what will be on exams
Expect to read the required material. Expect to be challenged with provocative questions. You will learn a lot of new terminology and gain incredible insight into literary works. To do well on the exams, you will need to study and prepare thoroughly. He does not use slides or a class website. He lectures, but his lectures are very interesting.
The course was tough, but it was interesting throughout. Dr. Johnston's lectures were insightful and engaging. Careful reading is required, and I mean careful! You have to be thinking in class. He shows a real respect and passion for material, and expects it from students. Definitely a prof you can ask questions to, just don't expect a handout!
While the lectures were interesting, the group project aspect of the class was irritating and stressful as most people have very different schedules. He also really focuses on the drama aspect of the class, which is annoying if you're an English major. He's a tough marker and his midterm was especially dense and most people didn't finish.
Mark is a really great speaker & it's very clear that he has a great interest in the topic, but, the workload and expectations are far too high for this course. The only way you could possibly get higher than a 70 in this class is if you focus on this class and absolutely nothing else. The group project did work out better than expected, though.
The group project was initially not explained well which led to a lot of wasted group time. A lot of things are quizzed on that seem initially unimportant. The midterm was hell, though, and all but one or two people were still writing it at the end of the period. He did change the weight of it after, which was much appreciated.
Fantastic lecturer. Expect to learn scansion, read 6 plays, and work on a difficult group project. If you put in the effort the texts and their interpretations become unforgettable. Don't make the same mistake as me, be quick on the mid-term or you won't finish. read every play in advance.
Although he is a very interesting lecturer, both this midterm and final were too lengthy for the allotted time we were given. On top of this, the group project was intense and many pop quizzes. I would suggest to re-work the breakdown or this class.
Graded on weekly quizzes, mid term, and final. Must buy textbook and do readings. Quizzes are fairly easy if you do the readings. Must attend class. I personally enjoyed it. Lots of writing for mid term and final but easy to get marks.
Looks a lot at the little details - I personally lost sight of the plays as a whole because of the minutiae. Try to keep the wider piece in mind.
By far one of the best profs in the department! You have to attend every lecture, and make fast notes, handwritten is a must, for speed! He knows all there is to know about SH. it will all be on the exams. Make sure you get a good group somehow, because it is going to be tough otherwise. Just makes sure to follow instructions. "Pop" quizzes r easy.
Dr. Johnston is very passionate about the subject matter and gives great lectures as a result. The course was interesting, but the work load was way over the top. Attaining strong marks in this class is difficult and the class average was very low. That being said, you will learn a lot about the subject matter.
He makes very boring and bland information interesting, amazing lectures. If you don't do the readings, you will fail his difficult quizzes.
Enthusiastic about what he's teaching and is open to questions
While the course material is tough, Dr. Mark Johnston makes the lectures interesting. The quizzes are easy if you attend the lectures and do the readings. While Early British Literature can be boring, he does his best to engage the class and make the course endurable.
Dr. Johnston is very enthusiastic about the course content and it shows through his lectures. He makes otherwise dry content interesting and understandable. He is a clear and articulate lecturer and his quizzes are a great way to review content and stay up to date. Dr. Johnston is a tough, but fair, professor. I would take another class with him.
Dr. Johnston is a challenging yet enjoyable professor. The quizzes are difficult, so make sure you read the plays and thoroughly understand them. Hopefully you get a good group for the group project because it requires collaboration and effort. Overall, it was a useful class to take.
Dr. Johnston makes you work for a good grade, but it's clear he's intentional in his curriculum and teaching style. His lectures are fun because he dramatizes and coloquializes the texts, helping students to understand their relevance. Smaller assignments and tests means keeping up, but it's a useful practice for 1st yr students! Totally worth it.
For this course he gave us 7 mini quizzes instead of a midterm so that was phenomenal. IF you do the reading there is no reason you won't do great on the quizzes bc he's not out to trick you. His lectures are super helpful as well, so I recommend going to every lecture, he's also hilarious so the lectures are entertaining
Dr. Johnston is my favourite professor in the English Department. His engaging lectures were full of knowledge and infused with humour. If you keep up with the readings and make sure to read closely, you will do well in the course.
Johnston's teaching methods made the course really enjoyable. Tons of reading (required - his quizzes are all about the details), but he breaks down the content in lecture effectively. He also set up the course work in an effective & manageable way (3 assignments all building off of each other, no midterm) that optimized the improvement in my work.
Johnston is a nice guy, but his lectures did not pull me in. The level of work for the course was reasonable and the breaking down of the assignments instead of a midterm was really nice. However, he is a tough marker, and does not really spend the time to answer questions during the class, or get to know students names.
Dr. Johnston's classes are really enjoyable. His lectures are engaging and entertaining while making you learn. His marking is tough but fair. Instead of a midterm, he has 7 small quizzes and a large assignment broken up into 3 parts. To pass any of those, do the readings and go to class. The readings are sometimes huge, but they're necessary.
While Johnston is an engaging prof, I found 210 too challenging for a course required for first-years. The lectures are great, but I wish he catered to more types of learning styles (rather than just auditory). His quizzes test on very specific details which can be challenging for students that are less detail-oriented. Assignments were fairer!
Dr. Mark Johnston was a pleasure to learn from. I love listening to his insights and passion and I have enjoyed every play examined. However, he teaches in an auditory way. He has no account on blackboard and does not supply slides. I can learn without it, but it would be beneficial to have something to look at. (Clips of plays would really help).
Amazing lecturer and prof. If it wasn't for the group project, this would be a great class. I think most Lit majors would agree that a solo paper, or a midterm is far more effective than a Group project . The project is confusing, difficult and more drama than English, not that the drama majors help with the writing. I do not recommend this class.
One of the best English profs I have ever had. Although, I think that the course was geared more towards drama students than English students. The group project was a pain, but it was still a good learning experience. Shakespeare classes with this prof are definitely something that I look forward to. His enthusiasm and personality are amazing!
Johnston's enthusiasm for the content is contagious. The grade distribution could be adjusted though. 25% of the mark comes from a group project, that takes the entire semester, is only 5% more than the 2 page scansion essay. 30% for the group project and a 30% final seems more reasonable.
He is a fun, engaging, insightful and unusual lecturer. Having taken 326, I thought I knew what I was getting into with the group project. It will be worth it (I said), think of the lectures (I said), but it was like forgetting what pregnancy is like, and then having another baby. As long as you keep that in mind, the course is definately worth it!
I would literally go to the grave for this man. No other professor has challenged me to deepen and explore my ideas the way he has. He has always pushed me, engaged me, and helped me grow. I cannot stress this enough: I would die for him.
He's the most iconic prof I've ever had- If you want to be pushed to the next level I recommend him. I've never had a prof that was so difficult to please, yet genuinely wants his students to do well. He is hilarious, enthusiastic and this alone sparked my interest in the subject. Group project was not bad at all, maybe it should be weighted more.
Floored by the lectures. Casually summarizes Lacan or Hegel and applies their ideas to Euripides or Shakespeare like its no big deal. Ive learned so much, and am leaving the class with valuable foundational knowledge. Would recommend his Tragedy class to anyone, impossible to walk away from this course the same person.
Enjoyed the class, learned a lot.
Such a nice guy and I appreciated was how passionate he is. He definitely brings a good energy. But, if you're only looking for an elective, beware that his class may end up as your toughest. He doesn't use blackboard or give any review/help in terms of testing, for which the questions seem really random. Lectures are all over the place.
Mark Johnston is a very enjoyable professor to have. He is hilarious and makes the lectures interesting. This man will crack you up! His quizzes are medium diffuculty, but his assignment are challenging. READING HEAVY. He is willing to work one on one with students to help us improve our work and holds lots of office hours. He is a great guy.
Fast pace in lectures but over all he is very funny and enthusiastic about what is being taught. Class isnt too hard but make sure to do readings and study for weekly quizzes
Excellent professor who is passionate in what he teaches! My only concern is he gives you the awnsers to the quizes when you do not have them returned, therefore you are not given the opurtunity to correct your quizes. I also wish the TA's were a little more consistent in their marking. In conclusion, the course was very interesting & enjoyable.
He's a cool guy and is really passionate. The only things I disliked was the inconsistent marking and that he uses such an extravagant vocabulary so when you're in the middle of a fast paced lecture (they always seem to be) it is really hard to write notes especially if you're bilingual.
Professor Johnston is an amazing lecturer and I really enjoyed all of his courses! His lectures were always engaging, eye-opening and inspiring. His extensive knowledge of the course material and passion for English was truly apparent. He is also always available to help and his office hours inspired a lot of my work! go to them :)
short and sweet quizzes but you gotta do your readings to do well. he loves what he does but talks way too fast and expects us to understand what he is saying and meaning. he references other historical things in his lectures assuming we all understand resulting in my notes having a lot of "?"s. He's a nice guy but his lectures are WAY too fast
Johnston definitely cares a lot about the subject and has fast-paced, enthusiastic lectures. His office hours are great, and I would highly recommend going to them (even if you're doing well). Do the readings, record words/terms and research definitions, pay attention in class, and his course won't stress you out too much!
Dr. Johnston is an extremely confusing professor. He said he would not test on dates, and the very next quiz he tested on dates. His assignments are made extremely difficult as he only tells you part of what he wants for assignments, which requires you to go to his office hours to actually know what he wants on assignments. Good luck!
Dr. Johnston was an overall great professor! His passion makes lectures engaging, he is very approachable, and is clear on his expectations. I would advise doing all readings and attending classes, as the quizzes are based off of both. There are not many papers and he is a fair marker. You need to put in effort to do well, but it is worth it.
Hard to follow in lecture and a lot of reading but quizzes were fair.
A very calm and approachable teacher. Quizzes are based on readings and lectures so you need both but if you put in the effort it's worth it.
For a first semester freshman English course, Professor Johnston expects way too much from his students. Hes respectable as a person since he cares about the material, but he does not clearly outline what he wants for assignments beforehand. He only elaborates on criteria after. Quizzes will boost your mark, but the essays will hurt you.
Dr. Johnston is an extremely passionate and funny professor. He always makes sure that his students know they are able to go to him with any questions at any time. I had Dr. Johnston for Early British Literature and did not enjoy the class. However, in the Shakespeare class, he is extremely into the material which helps the students stay engaged.
Dr. Johnston did something that no other professor has been able to do: he made Shakespeare fun and interesting! He talks about the relevance of the plays in the early modern era and in today's era, which makes them easier to grasp. Just make sure to study, and definitely go ask him questions/advice on papers and group projects. A lovely prof!
Great guy who's fair but with high expectations
this man WILL psychosexually analyze anything he can get his hands on
Dr. Johnston is a highly intelligent professor. I found his class difficult because there were no visual aids help supplement his dense lectures. I learned a lot but it was hard to stay engaged and at times challenging to follow. He goes at a fast pace and I felt I was hardly ever able to take all the notes I needed.
I had Dr. Johnston for Western Drama - Tragic. While I was under the impression the course would be English-focused it was actually more drama-focus. I was in the dark a lot of the time. Dr. Johnston really cares about the students understanding though and encourages students to contact him for clarification. HEAVY reading.
It has been about 10 years since I was taught by Dr. Johnston in two of my classes. I will say that Mark left a remarkable impression on me as a student. He always made time for me, while pushing me further than I ever thought possible. Mark is passionate about his students, and makes you earn your grades. He is a good person to know, a god soul.
Dr. Johnston is my favorite Professor! He is very professional and inspiring to me, and I encourage everyone to take at least one class with him. I've had him twice and worked hard in his classes - it's very easy to slip if you fall behind in the course load. He grades fairly and pushes your limits - he always offers to help and does it well. 10/10
Dr. Johnston is probably one of my favourite professors in the English Department so far. He is passionate, caring, and realistic. He is straight forward with his expectations, simple set up (quizzes, group work, exams), and is always willing to give extra help. The focus was less on the specific play and more on a cultural/historical context. LOVE
He told my class that we should not be English majors. Has very specific goals but never tells you them. He claims he wants to see his students succeed but when asked questions says that you have to find it within yourself. He also expects you to be able to come to office hours, where once again he says that he does not have the answer.
This is an important class & Dr. Johnston does an excellent job at teaching it! He is motivational but challenging. If u don't learn the content of this course well you will suffer down the line. He is available for office hours/you can email him. He gives good feedback and can take feedback as well. Great prof! (start ur big assignment early)!
This profs disregard for personal life struggles is ridiculous. As someone who struggles with mental health and motivation, he offered me no help and desire to see me succeed in the class when I was very open with what I was experiencing behind the screen. I will not be taking another one of his classes again. Required or not. -10/10
Dr. Johnston's teaching style is rambling. He will repeat the same rudimentary topic for half of the lecture, making notes incredibly tedious. There was no clear grading guidelines and while he gave worthwhile feedback, the ta gave none and was a horrible grader. You prayed he graded your assignment. I've had better highschool classes than this.
Dr. Johnston is incredible! You must go to class to pass, but his lectures are always enjoyable. He puts trick questions in his quizzes and tests so make sure you read the required plays. I wish he spoke a little slower or provided lecture slides so it was easier to follow, but besides that, he's great. I liked the format of testing/projects.
Professor Johnston is amazing! I highly recommend taking one of his classes. The new outline for the course is wonderful, and the test format it great too. It was nice not having to save all that was discussed in class and my own thoughts for a few weeks, as tests are after discussing that particular play. Lectures are wonderful as well!
Attend class and take notes on his lectures and you will do well in this class. The professor knew many students weren't English majors which made the class reasonable. I usually prefer visuals but the content was so engaging I enjoyed the auditory learning style. This has been one of my favorite classes at the U so far and I would recommend it!
where to even start with Professor Johnston. though he does tend to focus on one aspect of the plays in the course (ENGL1005), and sometimes drones on about parts of each play, he puts his heart and soul into the class. I took this course just for the credit, but I seriously enjoyed every lecture, mark is one of the most charismatic people ever.
Really great prof and gave really good constructive feedback on assignments! The lectures were heavy but enjoyable, and I would absolutely take a class with him again
I took Tragedy 1005 as an elective because I thought it would be interesting. While it was interesting, there was a TON of reading - more than I expected. He was very passionate about the subject matter. While not mandatory, come to class if you want to pass - a lot of topics and subject matter are discussed heavily in lectures.
Honestly, you don't realize how much of a great English professor he is until you take classes with other English professors.
Professor Johnston is easily accessible outside the classroom, however within the classroom most lectures do not need to be attended - material is discussed in class quite briefly, but not much gets completed. He calls on students within lectures and has continued to deteriorate my confidence. I do not recommend.
Through Mark Johnston's lectures, little to no material is discussed - we continuously skim the first section or two of a piece of literature, and never finish. He often talks about sexual encounters, and then marks harshly based on the lack of knowledge of students in result of his lack of teaching. Has almost made me cry a plethora of times.
I dropped Professor Johnston's class because I couldn't keep up with the readings (considering all of my other classes). The readings were very boring and the few lectures I went to were also boring. It was hard to even care about the material. He wasn't very clear and informative. He seemed nice but I won't take another class with him.
Mark Johnston is very egotistical and does not care about the success rate of his students. Love to belittle students and make them feel less than. Would not recommend.
He is the worst professor, making me want to unalive myself or drop out from the first lecture. His lectures do not make sense, they confuse you even more, and he only talks about sex. He also teaches you the lesson for the assignment after you submitted it and got the feedback where he basically calls you stupid.
Professor Johnston is a really good professor, he does a lot and cares a lot more than students know. He makes lectures fun and nice. I would definitely take his class again because he is an amazing professor, gives a lot of very good feedback and actually cares about the success of his students. I recommend!
He is a chill person. This is an English class so reading is obvious we will be reading a lot. He gives good feedback and helps the student with improving their grades. He tries to make this class interning and most people need to understand that the text has an undertone of sexual context. He needs more assignments tho.
Johnston is clearly a passionate and well-informed professor who tries his best to share his knowledge of literature with his students. His lectures are easy enough to follow and provide insight on the culture behind the readings as well as the readings themselves. Would recommend!
Passionate professor who gives engaging lectures. He encourages students to study the material closely and his assignments are never unmanageable. He was very clear in his instruction and was always available for advice. He also encourages student feedback and is open to criticism, which I admire. I would definitely take a class with him again.
Dr. Johnston is an amazing lecturer and has some of the most engaging lectures by far. There is a huge learning curve to this course and as a non English major, it is challenging at first but you're provided detailed advice and critiques if asked. Definitely important to attend lectures and stay on top of reading. I strongly recommend this prof.
Dr. Johnston is an amazing lecturer. He forgot his lecture notes one day, and still delivered a perfectly structured engaging class. The tragedy class was definitely tough as a non-english major. Readings were long and you have to put in effort to get an A. going to class is KEY. I do wish the tests clarified where the marks were being lost
All lectures were just reading the textbook, skipped most as I felt it took away my time from other classes- Still did fine on my own with assignments. Was degrading to students in-class and during feedback. Told many students, me included, they're not good enough for the English program. Yikes is all that I will say.
The lectures were unhelpful and the material on the test was irrelevant. The professor's instructions and feedback were confusing and contradictory. Despite my efforts, I struggled in the class. He said he'd rarely grant extensions, even with accommodations. Save yourself the grief.
Dr.Johnston was by far my least favorite prof of the year. His lectures were literally just him reading from the textbook and randomly calling out a person in class, even though they clearly don't feel like speaking. His assignments are graded hard, often times giving very vague instructions or feedback. Very contradicting.
An incredibly knowledgeable and articulate prof. There's a steep learning curve: he treats you like university students, no training wheels. You learn how to take notes quickly and effectively, you learn a ton from his engaging lectures, and read a lot of great books. If you pay attention in class and do the reading, you'll be chilling.
Overall prof. was great, these other reviews aren't reflective of anything I experienced. The professor's passion for tragic drama was evident. The lack of lecture slides did make it a bit hard to follow. The 7 bi-weekly tests weren't too bad. Lots of reading, but it's an English class, so reading is to be expected. I would take this prof. again!
Super great professor, English isn't my major but the content was very interesting. He has high expectations but it's doable. There are 7 tests of 7 plays with one essay question and multiple choice, plus a final. I thought that the plays that we covered worked well with the course and didn't feel rushed. Lectures are oral but were easy to follow.
Professor Johnston is a passionate lecturer, although the course has a steep learning curve. Lots of reading, but engaging classes make it manageable. Unstuckstudy AI was a great study aid alongside the textbook. Attendance is key to succeeding in this class.
Johnston gives NO feedback at all but expects you to recognize your mistakes. He doesn't care about student's success. His lectures are so boring and he often goes off topic to talk about sex and random things that don't even matter. The only good thing about him were his tests. They were all online with 20 multiple choice and an essay question.
Dr Johnston's lectures in themselves weren't bad. But he gives zero feedback on assignments and expects you to recognize your mistakes on your own. He also LOVES scansion which is so dumb and makes zero sense. His quizzes weren't bad but again, feedback is limited. I wouldn't take him unless you are an English major or it is required.
Dr Johnston's lectures are very helpful in understanding underlying themes persistent in the plays read in class. His expectations for assignments are very clearly outlined in the syllabus and are straightforward. Very helpful outside of lecture
isn't helpful, lectures dont make sense, exam is confusing
