Great teacher!! This guy knows his stuff. His books are great as well. Very enjoyable class and teacher!
nice fella. very honest. very down to earth. passionate about topic. interesting lecture but at times unorganized. threw party with money he earned from class purchasing his books. flexible teacher regarding grades dates etc.
This class was not very hard, no surprises. He is an amazing person. I want to major in jurgeunsmeyer he was such a good teacher.
He's lively and fun and is an expert when it comes to religion and global conflict. Lectures can be unorganized and hard to follow though. Tests tend to be pretty easy too.
As smart as a soc prof gets. Enjoyable classes that get you thinking.
Lots of enthusiasm, fun,a true expert in his field, fairly accesible considering his celeb status, but puts on too much of a show instead of lecturing, tests are extremely easy, parties are great, flexible on dates, in global 2 we even had streakers for final
I have never encounted a professor that showed more blantant favor for males over females. I have approached him for two classes about doing an honors section and have been blown off both times. For someone so liberal, what happened to women's rights?
Best professor I've ever had. Makes the class very interesting. Very funny.
He's arrogant and cocky. If he pulled his head out of his ass maybe he would be a better Professor.
Great guy. He is very arrogant but he knows what he's talking about. A lot of readings and some writing, but you'll be okay. Just go the lecture.
He is one of the best professors I have had through out my college life. If you are a nerd you will not enjoy his class because he is really cool laid back person.
He is a celebrity in his field. Lectures are interesting. Very unorganized, couldn't keep track of when he was giving tests. He is so busy with his field work it seems he leaves his class last and therefore is disorganized. But, I wouldnt miss this class for anything! He's well spoken.
He is a really great prof.... he really helps you understand the whole history behind a situation.
great guy, sometimes too busy with govt.stuff, butis all good, love how he brings in speakers and other professors. Test "pice of cake" just take notes and read, iz all good...oh final, can be taken with a blind fold and will pass, trust! only thing is if hes parties had liquor be alot better...
He's a great professor, really funny and knows his stuff. He starts every class with a clip of "The Daily Show"--my kind of man!
does he even realize that he's teaching a class or is he just waiting for the red phone to ring? Don't get me wrong, seems cool, must really know his stuff-but he appears as if he is 'over' teaching.
easy class, doesn't lecture very much maybe 30 min or so, laid back
I love this man! Take this class.
I love him. Funny, smart, and a great lecturer. And he threw a party after the final. His house is amazing too.
Jurg is the best! Super interesting class, not too hard. He's a very important and respected person in his field. If you get a chance to take a class with him, DO IT!
Experienced, worldy, Charismatic, and funny professor. Lectures are slightly flimsy but interesting. He is convincing and makes intrigues you about Globalization. Tests are easy if you read and take notes in lecture.
If you ever need to take a class just for general ed, make sure to get one with Juerg! Very simple class, and yet you learn a lot at the same time! A pretty eccentric prof., and yeah he's kinda full of himself, but that's why he gets along with everyone. Very knowledgeable in world issues. Readings are pretty interesting as are lectures.
What can I say about this professor...he inspired me to change my major to Global Studies! He definitely shunned a new light on in my miniscule brain...he taught me about the major issues that r goin on in the world...Great professor...can b cocky at times cuz he knows his stuff....but very respectable too.
Yah he's funny and charismatic if you're they type who is content to passively absorb information in lecture. If you actually INTERACT (with this #$*!) you'll realize he refuses to wast any of his precious time with undergrads: he's rude but above all DISMISSIVE.
i worked with jerk-ensmeyer for years, was an honors student under him... he is a **** jerk, so dont expect to get anything from him unless you are a dude who kisses major ass.

Juergens is one of the best professors I had in college. His ability to lead a thoughtful and critical discussion is incredible- be careful, though, he'll keep you on your toes- be prepared in class to answer tough questions.

the best
He's the FONZ of UCSB professors. Check out my Jag! Very knowledgeable. Nonors sections are worthwhile if you can be a part, but try not to get involved with any of his social science experiments in Cmapbell hall...Zzzzzz
he should run for president...
super funny! lives on dp and invites students over. embarrasses people in front of the class who haven't read the news
Great Professor! But he will shame you in front ot hundreds!
he is a shaddy, self interested person. BEWARE
He's awesome. Just stay on top of current events, go to class, and if you don't want to be called on, don't sit in the isles.
honestly his classes feel like you're on the jerry springer show. he asks rhetorical questions and mostly calls on dumb people, so everyone can laugh at them. if you actually make an intelligent comment and upstage him he just dismisses you. his classes are so easy it's a joke. if you already know anything about global events you won't learn much.
Fun, easy class. Multiple choice midterm and final (easy!), plus reading notes due in section every week. Reading is easy at the beginning, towards the end it's boring. Just don't go up to him in person at the party he throws at the end of finals or you'll be totally disillusioned, like others say he is pretty self-involved, even in lecture.
I just got out from the Global Religions exam... I am pissed off because an unfairly huge portion of exam was dedicated to hindic religions... it is ridiculous... and indeed, the guy's arrogant!
take the class- it's interesting, but if you don't know anything about current events then don't sit in the front or he will make and idiot out of you. He seemed like a really cool guy in class but when i went to talk to him at his end of the year party he was really rude and dismissive, so beware....
May be arrogant etc, but he'll give a BOOST to your GPA... absurdly EASY!!! :-)
this is the global religions class. interesting lectures, had a group project, went to different religious centers. he is definitely an interesting professor, likes to relate to students. final was based mainly on readings, so DO THEM! he doesn't discuss the readings at all during lecture, but tests on them!
If you don't know much about globalization and its consequences, take this class, and you will learn a lot. No textbook, only a reader, but you have to know the main pts/arguments well. Writing requirement=1 page analysis of the reading for that week. Know what guest speakers talked about. And go to his party, it's the bomb!!!
He was a great lecturer, however the reading notes required were absolutely ridiculous. The TA's didn't explain how to do them, then each week they would complain that nobody was doing them right. If the class had better TA's it would be much easier, rather than the attitude problem TA's and the one that doesn't even speak english.
Do NOT take this class if you are a Soc major. This class was definitely geared more towards Global Studies majors. It brought down my perfect major and overall GPA for Sociology because of this. Prof. J. is very enthusiastic and a fun lecturer, but information is minimal and as a Soc major, you will feel completely LOST. A real disappointment..
Juergensmeyer is a Good professor, He is enthusiastic and truly enjoys teaching his classes. He may be a little arrogant and you definately have to go to class... And STAY AWAKE! He takes stuff from class for test a LOT. make sure you read the reader and understand it. Section is usefull if you take advantage, the TA's are interesting people
TAKE THIS CLASS! HE is AWESOME! So knowledgeable on the subject matter and he is hilarious. Kind of goofy, but doesnt make you fall asleep in lecture. Only has a reader that you read a ton of articles from, but they all relate to class. LOVED the class. Lots of writing for reading notes, but I learned SO much from it
Take this class. Such a good lecturer and amazingly interesting.
He uses powerpoints but the slides don't have that much written info on them (a lot of pictures). He talks a lot and it's a little bit tough to guess what's important and what's not. But that's okay...once it comes to the midterm/final he makes them ridiculously easy. Also...there is a LOT of reading for this class.
Love global st, hated this class. Lectures were difficult to follow, didn't enjoy the annoying jokes. He singles people out and embarrasses them for not knowing world facts as well. TAs were extremely disorganized (I went to the first and last section, the rooms changed all the time). Midterm and final based on reading/lec/map. wouldnt rec. him!
Fun class! He played youtube clips at the beginning of every class. Lecture wasn't always necessary, a bit boring and he goes fast with his slides. The only lecture stuff that was on the exams was the guest speakers and his opinions about article topics. BIG reader but pretty easy to read and there wasn't too much reading. I'd recommend it!
Great teacher and really interesting class! Lectures were interesting and some had guest speakers. The midterm and final consist of multiple choice questions based on the lectures, maps, and readings. I definitely recommend taking this class.
First of the reading were brutal. 60+ pages a week with a paragraph summary for each article to top it off. 1/3 of the midterm based on the reading, 1/3 based on lecture and 1/3 on maps. It was multiple choice, but still fairly hard. Same goes for the final. The maps were the easiest part (just go to www.ilike2learn.com for helpful practice).
the reading is pretty heavy and there's a weekly write up assignment... but his lectures are interesting and i enjoyed the news clips and colbert report/john stewart clips. he picks on people sometimes in class but i never got picked so it was ususally just entertaining.....
Best professor at UCSB! I enjoy attending his class.
Absolutely amazing professor...fell in love with global studies..always puts people on the spot which makes the class very entertaining...his midterm wasn't too horrible as long as you study...he wants you to succeed...i highly reccomend global 2
Juergensmeyer is a crazy guy but thats what makes it such a fun class. He tells the randomest stories and im pretty sure he has covered the whole globe. Very knowlegable about the subject. He is hilarious if u have a sense of humor. If you read and go to lecture you will get an A in this class
best professor at ucsb. he's so intelligent and helpful. fun sense of humor. lots of reading and tests are a bit hard, but great class. you won't regret it.
This professor is hilarious, but if you don't want to get picked on, sit in the center--where he can't reach you. Make sure you know what's going on in the world. His reader is old, but make sure you read them and know the authors and the main ideas. I enjoyed this class and it made me interested in the Global Studies major.
I loved this class! Juerg is so much fun and all over the place. Tests were over both reading and lecture so it's good to try to keep up with the reading and go to all the lectures. Not a super hard class, but lectures can be a little hard to follow. But most of the test q's from lecture are things he deems common knowledge. Take this class!
Great teacher! Some of the readings are kinda dense and theres reading notes due every week in section, but as long as you keep up and go to lecture its not that hard of a class. He always shows clips from the daily show or some current event at the beginning of class, lectures, then usually has a few guests speak at the end.
Best professor and the best class! We went on field trips to religious centers all around santa barbara, which was really cool. Although we never directly discussed the readings, a huge portion of the midterm was based on them, so do it! Also, obscure facts about the field trips were included as well to make sure ppl went, so go!
Great lecturer, incredibly educational. His courses are geared to teach and not set up to make you fail. Less interested in how well you study for his tests & more interested in you actually walking away with knowledge, awareness and the truths of the world as it is, even after school has passed and done with.
Juergensmeyer is clearly one of the most well loved prof's in the Global Studies department. That being said, his lectures were often a little bit boring and wandering. His tests are pretty easy, but you'll have to do a lot of readings.
Juergensmeyer doesn't give the impression that he cares much for his undergrad students. But the TAs were helpful and the class, especially the second half, was pretty interesting. Tests were curved and students were given extra points to make up for bad questions.
He is the best professor I have had at my years at UCSB. He is funny, engaging, and extremely knowledgeable. I was in his honors section and there he truly demonstrated how intelligent he is. I would recommend this class to all UCSB students - a must take.
lectures are extremely scattered, so its hard to figure out which points he wants you to know for the final and midterm. the midterm includes a map portion where you have to memorize all the countries in the world. i thought it was boring, but a lot of people really liked it. overall easy class if you attend lecture and section.
The most intelligent person I have ever met. He definitely knows what he is talking about and because of this he is sometimes scattered. Lecture is packed with info so be sure to attend and pay attention. A lot of reading but really interesting! He's hilarious. Great class!
Great lectures and very knowledgable, but he does not do much for the class. Its all up to the TA's do the reading keep up with section and an A or B is not hard at all. Good global teacher.
Easy A. Reading is easy, section requires 1-2 pages of notes on reading each week- and it gets you a writing credit. Midterm is Multiple Choice. If you attend lecture, or know about the world at all, there is no reason to get less than an A.
Best Professor I've had at UCSB so far. He makes sure everyone understands the material and wasn't biased when it came to our conflict resolution of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. We only read his books in class but we had a lot of guest lectures with opinions different than his own.
Best, most interesting class I've had at UCSB. Juerg is the man, knows his stuff and keeps it laid back. Attendance is not mandatory but after taking this class I want to go sit in on some of his other lectures just to listen to the issues at hand. If you like global issues and no homework, take this class. A
Highly knowledgeable, humorous & laid back. His reviews for midterms tell you exactly what to expect, his use of guest speakers & field trips add depth to the course. A pioneer in the Global Studies & the guy who actually created the major for the first time anywhere in the world. Take as many classes with him as you can & speak to him!
Awesome teacher, super nice and very interesting. Easy class, gave everyone A's. Didn't do so well on the midterms (no final) and still got an A!
best/worst professor at ucsb. His classes are easy with minimal effort & he throws a party but if you want to learn don't bother.
very good professor
Interesting class, lecture is only really mandatory because some of the test questions are on his lectures. Lectures are kind of structured like a story, interesting at times. 2 midterms, no final, includes a test on all the countries of the world. Book is essential for homework, which easily fulfills the writing requirement.
The professor seems a nice guy and the material is not hard. However, You must choose the right TA. Reading notes are usually graded full points if you complete the assignment and get major points. Some TA has demanding reading notes criteria, which makes its impossible to get full points for your reading notes (make up 30% of the total course)
The hard part for this class is the readings. So many pages to read each week and the reading notes grading are really arbitrary. For test, You just need to do the readings and remember sparse information from the lecture, meaning the lectures don't have substantial context but they could be interesting to attend.
He clearly cares very much about the students and is incredible passionate about the source material. He is also very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. Tests were very very easy, if you glanced over the reading and went to lecture you could not get less than an A. However I did not find his lectures very stimulating.
he's a good lecturer, makes sure things don't get boring. Tests are not too hard, had a lot of funny answers on the final, actually made me laugh.
Let's be honest, I haven't finished this. But I know that Juergensmeyer is at once a great professor and a man who doesn't truly understand the needs of students or the possible impact he can have by basically taunting us. Anyone can feel isolated and awkward in a class of 100+ people and being made fun of in front of their peers can be triggering.
Super cool guy! Lectures can be a hit or miss. Sometimes he talks about his trips to other countries, or we have student speakers from different regions talk about their culture. Be ready to read, b/c hw is a summary/reflection of it. No midterm/final but there are 2 exams with more questions on readings than lectures. Read chapter intros to study!
He urged you not to take notes in class so I ended up taking naps and stopped going. Sections are required to show up and tedious reading assignments due each week. Wasn't too hard. Had to do map questions on the 1st midterms and you take the final during dead week. You can get extra credit by watching a movie and writing 1 page reflection.
SUCH a fun guy. Very enthusiastic with a passion for what he's teaching. He really cares that everyone passes. He'll also invite you to his house for parties!
Juerg is such and admirable person! For me this class was somewhat difficult because I didn't attend a lot of the lectures. I figured out the hard way that the lectures are more important than the readings. He does not post the slides online because the slides have little to no info so you MUST attend class to hear his lecture while you take notes.
Pretty solid professor. He discourages taking notes in class and his slides don't have much info, but the readings are what the exams are based on. Had about 8-9 readings each week but they weren't too long so it wasn't that bad. There are mandatory reading notes due in section that are a good chunk of your grade. Do the readings, you'll be fine.
Juergensmeyer is a super awesome dude! Lectures were difficult to follow, his slides had little to no info and he mainly just goes on these verbal tangents. Midterm and final were basically on the readings each week. He throws a party at the end of the quarter at his house on DP. Overall, this class is pretty easy + enjoyable.
WOW OH WOW great amazing teacher. Every week he'll have extra credit sections on his OCEANSIDE house on DP and at the end of the year he throws a party with actual food. He is so kind and thoughtful and his lectures were so interesting and powerful. I cannot recommend him enough. Plus, a super easy A.
Great professor. Really enthusiastic and funny. 2 midterms (1 short essay, the other 1 page response) & a multiple choice final, he let us have a cheat sheet. He doesn't take attendance, but if you miss lecture it's your loss. Tells you what is going to be on the midterms beforehand so it is easy to study. Definitely read for the final. Recommend!
I only went to lecture and got an A. Did not do any of the readings but I went to his honors seminar at his hosue after class. He is very repetitive but is passionate about the topic. This class is also Soc 138 I believe (it counts for both the Soc and Global Studies departments). Just go to class and pay attention and you should be fine.
Professor Juergensmeyer definitely defines what a good teacher should aspire to be. He is passionate, knowledgable and goes directly to the sources to give you the best representation of a topic as possible. His lectures are light hearted and very very practical which is so refreshing. Talking about current events and solutions really inspired me.
Great class and very relevant information. Jeurgensmeyer gives interesting lectures and makes lots of dad jokes. Just show up to class and you'll pass
Both the midterm and final are mult choice and easy if you went to class/did readings. He's a very engaging lecturer and brings in a lot of guest speakers that are interesting too. The readings can get long/boring but if you at least go to section and discuss, it makes the test a lot better.
The original legend. Juergensmeyer knows the material better than anyone, and he's fantastic at teaching it. He is very friendly and approachable and really goes the extra mile for the students. You do need to learn a fair bit of history, do readings, and memorize all the countries so be prepared. I recommend taking this alongside Geography 5.
Such a kind professor! He seems to really care about his students/ Only downside is that his lectures can go in many directions and the powerpoints provide almost no structure, so you have to be able to keep up because he will ask little questions about the lecture on the tests (which are still relatively easy).
Juergensmeyer is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is insanely cool and has been to basically every country and interviewed the known terrorists around the world, including the masterminds behind 9/11.. He is super funny and kind and gives a ton of options or extra credit. Two midterms (1 page policy briefs) and a multiple choice final
dude is so chill
Professor Juergensmeyer is such a nice guy! He makes the class really interesting and easy to understand. Lectures can be a little bit boring at times but he doesn't post his slides online so it'll benefit you to go to class and take notes. The extra credit really helps your final grade and all the extra credit opportunities were super interesting!
Was so excited to get to work with Juergensmeyer as an honors undergrad. Unfortunately the misogyny I experienced personally as his student, and later learned was well known amongst his other female students, left me disillusioned with this legend. He even misplaced my final & accused me of not completing it! It took a TA to correct my grade :/
I think the quality of Professor Juergensmeyer's class really suffered with the transition to a virtual format. It's pretty clear that he cares about his students and is super kind, but I really felt like I was basically self-teaching with the readings in his class. The readings were all part of a required textbook, and they weren't too bad.
A good professor. Not bad, but lectures were pretty boring. His slides are super hard to follow bc they have no text on them and he goes off on tangents pretty often. I did learn a lot and he is very knowledgeable, but it was difficult to pay attention. Only graded by 2 short written exams (questions given beforehand) and a MC final.
Amazing professor!!! Everyone should take his class. Lectures are extremely informative and interesting - lots of reading but you learn to skim
