Tough course, his classes are very structured. He's very conservative and likes things done his way. To pass the course I suggest writing everything he says in class. He likes to hear himself talk and likes it when you put it into his papers.
Knows his stuff. A lot of work and tough tests, but he is extremely fair. Also, helpful. Loves the Web CT! If you pay attention in class and take good notes, you'll do fine.
If points are clear in your papers, grade'll be lowered b/c of grammmar, and vice versa. Looks for exactly what he wants and you pay if he doesn't find it; only difficult b/c of his nit-pickiness, not his ability to challenge students intellectually

Uses every minute of class, everyday; will give low grades and have a poor explanation when asked why; 4 Core papers make up your grade, the quizzes he gives serve no point
His Native Amer. Lit class should have been a social studies, or history class. We talked a lot about historical context and plot, and very little about litary techniques. Does not facilitate class discussion well. Will mark down for absenses.
Hard Class, Knows his stuff but really rushes throught the material.Strict attendance policy. Hard test, you learn in his class but def not easy!
Had him twice. Kamrath's a nice guy, and knows his stuff, but sometimes I just feel lost and we cover INSANE amounts of material and most of it just gets lost in the process. Very picky grader.
Worst attitude ever! This is a teacher who likes to see his students struggle. His work load is only reasonable if it's the only class you're taking. Also, if you complain or "think outside his box," he tends to grade harshly.
He is the worst professor ever. Disrespectful to students. You will get marked off if you contradict anything he says. He thinks he knows what he's talking about, but he doesn't (i.e.- MLA). Also, uncompassionate and a generally not nice person.
His exams are actually simple, just write down every word he says in class, and regurgitate that verbatim on his exams. Don't try thinking for yourself, he just wants you to reconfirm how brilliant he is.
down with Kamrath!!!
his essays don't assess the information in class but what ever he feels like putting on an exam. he is unfair and the workload is too much fo what he tests on. Tests on 4 stories has you read about 100! don't take kamrath!!!!!!
a lot of reading; you have to work really hard to "earn" the A; he was very helpful
lectures are a waste of time normally as he seems to just go over assigned readings. stingy grader, too, but otherwise i like him.
Dont take this class! I learned practically nothing even though i had a b. Its a history class not a lit class and his stupid participation grade thing is like judgement day he calls your name while you raise your hand and he stares at you then writes something down. makes you memorize stupid crap that isnt important. okay guy but bad class.
HUGE workload and a very hard grader. But...I learned more in his class than I have in my other lit classes. If you take him expect to work your ass off but also to learn a lot. I would reccomend him.
An intense workload, the required reading portions are no joke, and neither is his grading. But you come out with a wealth of knowledge. Even with the workload an A is plausible. I highly recommend taking his class.
Regardless if you are disinterested in Native American Lit, you will come out wanting more & more. You have to work your butt off to get a decent grade -- A? What is that? Shoot for one, but probably get a B. Nice guy, but really tough. Recommend this class for anyone who is interested in those at the margins of society. :D
Is this guy serious! Take his class only if you have no other classes and nothing else to do with your time, because he will comsume your entire life! And don't expect an A (he doesn't believe in them!). DOWN WITH KAMRATH!!!!!!
This is one of the worst teachers that I have ever had. He assigned over 260 pages of reading over one week earlier in this semester. He is out of touch with his students needs ~ he assigns so much work I am simply appalled. I suggest avoiding this class and this teacher, he was a vast dissapointment.
Yah he sucked really bad
Yall have to be fair here. He's a good guy but really tough. If you want to learn, this is a good class. just make sure you don't have a bunch of classes that require a lot of reading...because you definitely have more than a fair share to do in this class. Aside from that, it's interesting and kamrath is very in depth.
I took this class during summer A and i don't think i talked to any of my friends for 6 weeks. Waaay too much work. I don't even feel that i learned anything. I probably worked harder in this class than anything i have done at UCF so far and it only netted me a B+. He didn't even seem to know the meterial.
Totally horrible. Hasn't bothered to re-read what he teaches. Brings nothing to the class - boring, uninformative, with a lame personality. Asinine papers. Tries to cover too much and goes over 2% of it. I'm disappointed I had to pay for this class. Never taking this professor's classes again. I loved Amer. Lit and wanted to learn more. I didn't.
This was a really tough class and there is a lot of work and reading that goes into it, BUT you will learn so much. Kamrath is so passionate about the topic and his passion is contagious. Take him and you'll be enlighten. He'll stretch you more than any other professor.
I should have believed all the negative reviews here. THE SAD FACE SAYS ENOUGH. This guy is an absolute waste. DON'T BOTHER. He has nothing to teach you. He won't help you. Most professors actually give a crap what they're teaching or about any of their students. I believe you all now! Run while you can.
Do not take Kamrath for any class! He is the worst professor I have ever had. He tells you what is going to be on the test and then has nothing of the kind on it. Don't waste your time or money on this ****
He admitted to our class that he stopped reading for pleasure six years ago. His lectures are fruitless and unenthusiastic. His grading policy is flawed and incredibly inconsistent. There was no new communication of ideas from him as a teacher. If I could get a refund for this class, believe me, I would. This is college??? Good riddance.

Attendance policy is a killer.

VERY strict on attendance. Workload is large, but I learned an so much about american lit. Tough class, but a B is attainable.
Lectures are boring and lacking substance. He drones on and on; very difficult to understand what he is trying to say. Unclear about assignments; uses big words strung together to have no meaning. Does not use plain english, and cannot explain in simple terms, everything has to be very complex even if it can be explained in a sentence or two
Very unclear about assignments, subjective grading without reasons, not prompt about responding to assignments or grading papers, boring lectures. His Wisconian accent doubled with monotone voice makes for a very long class period.
Dr. Kamrath is very fair and helpful. He ran his class well and we did lots of group activities and a final presentation. He also has a very well-groomed, full-grown beard. I feel that it adds to his professorly presence.
Dr. Kamrath definitely challenges you as a student, but he certainly wants the best for his students. He does give a large workload, but the material is interesting and he is clear about what is expected from you. Besides I think he's hot in an intellectual way...very hot =)
Dreadful Professor...never sure if he knew what he was talking about. Classes were a waste of time and incomprehensible. Assignments were unreasonable and vague. Grading was arbitrary. Avoid at all costs, switch majors or even schools if you have to.
Lectures are a blur of incomprehensible nonsense. Tests are just as bad. Grading seemed extremely arbitrary, as did all of the "material" he attempted to present. Switched majors just to avoid...am considering moving to keep from accidentally running into him at the supermarket. Avoid!
i dont know. i liked him! Go Mr. Kamrath!!! WOO HOO!!!
The people writing these reviews must be lazy and stupid because Dr. Kamrath is a great teacher. He does make you work hard, but that is why people come to college in the first place. If you don't want to read then here's an idea, don't take a literature class! You will learn the most with him as your teacher! He is an AWESOME TEACHER!
Very intelligent guy, but his ludicrous grading system seems to be based on the student reading his mind to interpret what he feels is necessary on any given assignment. Take him only if you plan on memorizing unsupplied quotes for test essays, and putting more time into your research and writing than is reasonable for undergraduate courses.
the comments given from the other students about him being horrible its true.the class material, tests, and assignments are very vague and unclear.the tests are graded on how well the student can read his mind and make sense of his boring and useless lectures.yes this is college but we pay for professors to teach us the material in an effective way
Dr. Kamrath is the best teacher I've had at UCF. He is intelligent, passionate about the subject, and always always! willing to help any student. The students who are writing poor reviews for him must be lazy and/or retarded. You will learn so much in his classes, and yes you will work hard, but it is definitely worth it. The beard helps too =)
I heard horror stories about Dr. Kamrath, but don't believe what you hear. He is very clear about what he wants, and he grades very leanently. As long as you read the text book & keep up with the massive amounts of essays (this is a Gordon Rule class!) you will do fine. Attendance is mandatory & his lectures make the authors being discussed clear!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!
I hated taking his class, it became so overwhelming and when I started to fall apart, he seemed to careless.
He is a very good teacher but really gets upset if he catches you on your cell phone or even using your laptop. Just dont use them and pay attention and you will do fine.
Don't Be Afraid, if you get to know him, he's awesome!
I took SLS and it was a complete waste of time. Do not take SLS, it wasn't even as easy as I thought it would be, we had to write a 5 page paper. Dr. Kamrath is a good guy though.
great teacher for SLS. learned alot and had a good time. Make sure to get all assignment in on time and it is an easy A
It seems as though previous raters were not used to taking college courses. Prof Kamrath covers a lot of info during the semester but it isn't impossible to handle. I took 3 other literature classes while in AML 3640 and he is very easy to work with. Great professor, don't let these ratings scare you away!
Dr. Kamrath is a great teacher, very helpful, easy to understand and talk to if you need extra help. I learned so much in this class. Yes, I had to WORK and EARN my grade, but that's life. A lot of crybabies complaining abt him..hello, its college you have to work hard, losers.
Good professor but class is not easy. There is a LOT of reading and a lot of writing but what makes the reading tedious is that it is based on history. Feels like your taking AMH 2010 all over again. I would only suggest taking class during the summer if you have free time within your schedule.
Grading is ludicrous & the lectures are boring. He wrongly accuses students & is not understanding. Not recommended.
I really enjoyed this class. Be warned, however: if you want an easy A, this is not the class for you. Aside from that, Dr. Kamrath is very enthusiastic, clear, and up-front about what he wants from you as a student. He grades somewhat harshly, but if you put in the work, you'll get the grades you want. I highly recommend him!
He's a traditional guy. He's tough, and he doesn't like cell phones/laptops because he's not an idiot and knows you aren't paying attention. I happen to be friends with all three of his kids. He's a great guy, and extremely smart. Be engaged in his class. Ask questions, and do the assignments. Take thorough notes in his class, they WILL be on his test. It's really not that bad, but you are going to have to do some work to get the A.
He may be a harsh grader who expects A LOT out of his students but I really went away from his classes well-informed. He's a great teacher, but is extremely picky about participation and tiny details that becomes overwhelming. Expect to put a lot of work into his class!
Hes a cool guy and great professor. His son goes to college so he knows what we are going through. Harsh grader so try hard and come to class. Listen to guest speakers.
He focuses more on the religious views than the diction and development of writing throughout the ages. I learned more about religion and history than literature. Attendance is mandatory. He is nice, demanding, and makes sure you know what is due before leaving class. Pay attention, follow directions, and work hard to get an A. Overall, a good prof
Very boring, fell asleep all the time. Treats you like you're five years old. Not helpful or easy. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
Dr. Kamrath has very open office hours, so if you ever need help, he's always there in Colbourn Hall. He does check attendance, so make sure you arrive on time to class. He expects nothing less than the best on every assignment. If you're interested in learning more about UCF programs and opportunities, then this is the class for you.
Some of the work is easy, some of it is annoying. most of the work was busy work. i usually was very annoyed with the class. everyone who took sls with another professor had it waaaaaaaaay easier. the class was easy and i recieved an A. i learned a lot, but it was annoying lol
This instructor is a classic example of how being overly educated is a detriment to being a quality teacher. I received an A in the course, but did so despite his condescending attitude, impossible grading standards, and overall negativity. If you are an undergraduate, run away. If you are a graduate student, avoid taking 5009 with him at all cost.
I despised this class because he made it like a high school American History class. Seriously? Another thing that irked me was when he wasn't in class, we had a substitute and watched a movie. Really? Cancel the class and let the class go! We're more than students here. I don't recommend him at all. I definitely tried my hardest in this class
Online. There is a great deal of reading and writing without clear rubrics. Be prepared to receive grades without knowing why you earned them. He lets you know that it is Gordon rule and should be 6000 but it ends up being 10000! It's a bit overkill. You will spend most of your time focusing on this class.
I desperately wanted to enjoy his class, but he was rude, not understanding, and his lectures were incredibly boring. It's honestly a stretch to call this a literature class since the entire class is based off of his opinion and his opinion alone. Attendance is mandatory for this reason. The grading was ridiculous and unclear. DO NOT TAKE!
A very intelligent individual but a truly awful professor. The class itself was not hard and the work load was reasonable for an introductory graduate course. However, his instructions are vague and his grading even more of a mystery. If he is representative of the graduate faculty, it'll be a long two years. I would not recommend him.
DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. PROFESSOR. I love to write but this class was so much. He is extremely boring. Has not conceptual thoughts about art or literature. He's just not what an english teacher should be. NOT TO MENTION THE COURSE LOAD. Weekly essays and discussion posts about content he doesn't even go over in class. So dull. Avoid him!
Get ready to write for this class. There is a weekly discussion post and an almost bi-weekly paper.(someone said 10,000 words, not a joke). None of it is necessarily hard, the amount is a bit much if you have more than school going on. It is extremely do-able though. I put in the most time on this class, but I also learned the most in this class.
For a 3000 level course this is simply too much. I would approximate that I've written about 15000 words over the past six weeks, 2 thousand of which were for the final exam itself. There are much easier ways to get this credit. Save your energy for your core classes
do not take this course over 6 weeks. i repeat: do not take this course over 6 weeks, especially if you are taking 2 others. i am no longer human. i am pure text. after taking kamrath's class, i have become textual evidence.
Lots of assignments, little time in between. He would never give more than a 99% on my discussion posts, and doesn't provide clear feedback. I tried to incorporate his feedback and my grade dropped massively. No rubrics and no clear criteria to folllow. Insisted I didn't submit the work when I did. 100% AWFUL
This was a ton of work for a 3000 level lit course. No one is exaggerating about the word count or this professor. He's nice and gives good feedback, but he gave me a 0 on an assignment I turned in. He corrected his mistake, but even with feedback his grading seems arbitrary, and with this amount of work, an A just isn't worth it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. SAVE YOUR SELF. Be prepared to write 15,000 words or more althought GRW only is required 6k. Gives feedback in beginning of class then stops at week two. Would give me a 98% with no feedback or explanation for 98%. A fall or spring could be better than my 6 week class, still though. Lots of reading and writing.
Prof Kamrath really cares about his students, and this shows through interaction as well as in the way he handles your participation in the course. It's a lot of reading, and a lot of writing outside class, but worth it. He's sympathetic and genuinely wants you to succeed in and out of class. Interesting class too, clearly passionate about it.
So here's the thing, Kamrath gives you A LOT of reading and writing assignments. These are weekly discussion s and several analysis papers during the course. But honestly as long as you do the readings and understand them, the papers are a breeze. Overall, it's not a difficult class, but if you don't do the needed work you're screwed.
Only take his class In-Person!! I took his class both Online and In-Person. Failed Online, passed with an 89% In-Person. Same course material and homework with both but you get a better understanding of the material and the content he is looking for with his personal lectures than just from the readings. Pay close attention to what he says!
After three years at UCF I can honestly say that this teacher is the worst I have ever encountered. He is arrogant and unwilling to provide helpful feedback. He grades based on an unrealistic rubric. I would NOT recommend him to my worst enemy!
Worst class and worst professor I have ever taken. Stay far away if you can.
LOTS AND LOTS of reading! Not the best professor Ive taken but not the worst. Hes a tough grader and nitpicks at small issues. I wouldnt take him ever again.
Dr. Mark Kamrath is an outstanding professor who truly desires his students to achieve their utmost. His course is extremely well organized and orchestrated. Dr. Kamrath takes the time to carefully grade students' work offering insightful comments for you to improve. In his class, you learn from your mistakes and improve upon your writing.
The amount of feedback given was laughable. Every week he would post a summary of how the class did as a whole, but would not give individual feedback and did not answer emails. We were assigned a book a week. Some were very complex, old English which are very hard to read in 5-7 days. Passing is manageable, but it takes a lot of self-motivation.
Expect to read volumes - anywhere from 100-200+ pages some weeks. Fascinating texts and videos though. Weekly discussion boards, several close-reading essay papers, monster mid-term exam, final project, final exam. Huge amount of work, but Dr. K wants you to succeed. Helpful feedback. Read/follow instructions. Do the work and you'll do well.
The coursework is boring, but Prof. Kamrath does his best to make class engaging. You have to read and write a lot- it is a literature class. He's nice and he cares a lot about his students. I earned a C+, but it was my own fault- I missed several classes and missed a couple assignments. My biggest complaint is he leaves no feedback on discussions.
Kamrath is not encouraging of different writing styles and wants his students to learn what he learns from a text. His feedback is based on essays he has written. Forces you to do busywork regarding minor grammatical errors, and asks you to go to outside sources for help, instead of teaching. If you are an A student, expect a B.
If you need a summer A/B elective, do not take this professor, especially with any other busy courses. If you don't enjoy reading early American English, you'll be miserable for six weeks, because you may have to read a couple hundred pages and write close to 2,000 words about it in one week. If you need this course, wait till spring or fall.
I have never given a rating in all four years of undergrad but I had to come here to rate so that other students might see. I'm sure the course being over six weeks impacted this, however, this was the most difficult class I have ever taken. An intense amount of readings. Excessive writing. Final exam with many irrelevant questions.
Not very clear on instruction. Excessive writing Midterm is very long and almost absurd Doesn't seem to know how to teach
If you have the option to take a different professor... you should 100% TAKE IT. I've never walked away from a conversation with him feeling heard or respected. Any concerns you have will be met with a story of how his sons both have degrees, so he "gets it".... he doesn't. Not to mention his dull teaching style. Save yourself the trouble.
Mixed opinions that'd I'd like to share. He's mostly fine, but there'll always be a sort of...strangely illogical wild card you have to plan around. Midterm exam: if you can't write 5 small essays, 1 big one, and 20 questions in 2 hours, GG. Final research paper...is on a week that UCF is closed? Meaning if you used Thanksgiving break...checkmate.
Dr. Kamrath is a difficult grader. Course is organized clearly and major assignments have comprehensive, detailed instructions.
Mr. Kamrath's class has quite a lot of reading and writing assignments, I am a very good writer although I do not like to do it. However, he makes the material very interesting and provides excellent insight on what he expects. He provokes your thoughts in the right direction and cares about your understanding of the material and how to analyze it!
Great professor. Lectures are interesting and participation will help your grade. Can be a tough grader, but he leaves feedback and is there to help/push you improve/understand the material. Frequent readings, but nothing crazy. I would highly recommend taking the class/professor, esp. if you want a rich learning experience.
Throughout the course there is a fair amount of reading, but he was able to keep it interesting. You can tell he perseveres to keep the class upbeat. A lot of writing although thankfully grading was lenient with constructive comments.
Dr. Kamrath is a model professor for online classes. His Canvas is well organized. Lots of reading, bit it's purposeful, plus his assignments and grading are fair. He is personable and makes time for students if they have questions/concerns and always replies in a timely manner. Overall, he is a caring professor that I would definitely take again!
I had Professor Kamrath for American Literature. The lectures were engaging. He wants all of his students to get something out of his class. He would explain what we would be reading, and what assignment was due at the end of the week. He was even nice enough to write a letter of recommendation for me for my MFA program. Overall, a great professor.
I took American Lit 1, Native American Lit, American Novel, and Digital Archives with Dr. Kamrath. He uses clear grading rubrics and assigns interesting material. He was always there to help during office hours and has served as a great reference. I recommend his courses.
Tough grader. Knows his stuff. Get ready to read. You're taking an American literature class? You should have come ready to read. He's also a great lecturer. Sit back, pop a cold one, and get comfortable. His cadence is easy to listen to, and he's a manner of explaining that unconfounds events with clarity. He's fair. You'll earn your grade.
Great Professor. Organized and clear guidelines. A lot of reading but engaging topics. Majority of the assignments are weekly discussion boards. The midterm/final are harder but they are open book. Make sure to read over the DB feedback each week when preparing for the exams. A few papers during the term. He gives good feedback. Would take again.
Professor Kamrath was genuinely a good instructor who truly dedicated his time for his students to be successful. He would reply to my messages fast and was clear with what he looked for. I feel like I actually learned something because online classes typically feel like I have to learn material myself. I recommend Professor Kamrath.
Great professor & fascinating course. Class is very history-focused but he gives plenty of helpful feedback every week after each discussion post (comes in handy once it's time to review for the midterm/final). Lots of interesting readings but expect to read *a lot*. Responds to emails quickly. Closely follow assignment instructions & you'll pass!
Good feedback on papers & grades on time. You should answer all questions thoroughly & give about 3-5 responses to other posters on substantial weekly discussion posts to get full points. Tests aren't too difficult as long as you do all the readings & posts. Heavy reading; I recommend looking 1 week ahead to start early on readings.
There's a lot of writing in this class and discussions but the way the class is set up I gained a lot from the material and comprehended it pretty well
I had Prof. Kamrath for AML3640 Native American Lit and AML3031 American Lit I. In both classes there was a high amount of reading and writing. This should be expected.. they're college level lit courses. Dr. Kamrath gave GREAT feedback on my papers and actually read them. I can honestly say that his feedback made me a better writer.
I would recommend this class and teacher. I would also take other classes by him! I enjoyed it!
I really enjoyed Professor Kamrath's course. We had a weekly discussion due on the reading and a 2 page paper due each weekend. The paper material was always very clear and his feedback was helpful. The class was simple if you read the material and read his feedback. I highly recommend you take Professor Kamrath if you have the opportunity.
I took Native American Literature with Professor Kamrath. There were tags I couldn't include, but if I could include more of them, they would be the "Participation Matters, Amazing Lectures, Gives Good Feedback and Caring". His class is reading intensive, so mentally prepare yourself for that. His video lectures and weekly feedbacks are fantastic!
This professor was excellent and he really loved the subject in which it made the class feel more like a physical class than an online one. Also, if you do a survey at the end of the semester he will bring up your grade. Make sure you study for the final exam that is the only reason why I got a B+
I loved AML4101. It introduced me to novels I wouldn't have read. The weekly discussion posts help you analyze the texts, interact with classmates, and see how others interpret the literature. Professor Kamrath cares about his students and wants them to succeed. As long as you do the work and participate, the class isn't hard.
Professor Kamrath is a good professor. He does his best explaining the material of the course. Students don't hesitate to ask a question. Make sure to send message early. Professor will respond quickly. He provides a break down of what was learned every week. This is helpful to include in your notes for open book exams.
Course was laid out well, while a lot of the readings weren't amazing in terms of being interesting and engaging. He definitely grades fairly, his lectures didn't drag on and seems genuinely interested in the subject. Reading everything assigned is not at all a requirement, he will tell you what is most important.
The class was easy enough to take. There are times where you are required to ready a lot of material, but the same material is explained more clearly during class.
Dr. Kamrath is very concise and his lectures are very easy to understand. The textbooks for the classes I've taken of his are mandatory; make sure to source your claims with quotes. Take good notes and pay attention!
Dr. Kamrath's lectures are very clear and concise, and although he assigns a lot of written assignments, he always gives detailed and helpful feedback. His course requires a lot of reading, but his lessons are interesting and engaging. He's a tough grader, but a fair one. Despite the challenge of his class, Dr. Kamrath's a great professor.
Good lectures and weekly discussion posts, as long as you stay on top of the reading you should be good!
Professor Kamrath is caring and so knowledgeable if you reach out. He is open to questions and never took too long to answer my emails. If you read and put in the work that is asked of you, this is an A course.
Dr. Kamrath is great. The assignments consisted of group discussion posts every week and a two page paper about every other week. The class is very organized.
#1 thing is to keep up with readings and take notes. Mostly long paragraph response to things. Also this is for HUM3830 it wasn't in the dropdown.
Took this course during the spring and it was fully online. Professor was super helpful and responsive to emails. This is a graduate course, so you are going to need to put in the work. If you work hard every week and ask for help, an A is easily attainable. I enjoyed this class :)
This course seems like a lot of work and students may have trouble with balance. Still, the endpoint is rewarding and the skills acquired from this seminar will benefit future graduate work and professional development--more than one could anticipate. I found Dr. Kamrath fair; he cares about his students' realistic success. Students, be patient.
He corrected my grammar and assisted me with technical issues I had along the way. He provided a lot of group work which I felt was integral in terms of peer connection and networking for an online class. Overall, very practical in terms of what a person could do career-wise after earning a Master's Degree in English.
Readings are filled with practical insights and useful strategies to help enhance research abilities. Still, there is a lot to do. Quite a few textbooks required, as well as attention to detail and willingness to put theory into practice. Professor is receptive to emails & provides thorough critiques + helpful pointers for improvement.
This professor does his best to respond quickly to students' emails/responses; however, depending on the situation, he might take a few days to respond. Be ready to complete a discussion post every single week -- go above the word limit for a higher grade. Rubrics are not given. Not given much guidance with the coding assignment.
For an online graduate course, the major assignments were spaced out incredibly well. With that said, do not underestimate how much time goes into each assignment. Deadlines are strict; however, Dr. Kamrath is reasonably accommodating. Discussion deadlines are nonnegotiable. The research assignments were practical and had detailed instructions.
He offers limited extra credit, so don't rely on it to improve your grade if you're on the border (A/B or B/C). Deadlines are strict; extensions are unlikely. However, the Library Research assignment is extremely useful for learning research skills. Weekly videos complement readings for better ease while writing discussion posts.
With digital archives he will probably know less than you, but he does mean well.
You can't go wrong with Dr. Kamrath. Just make sure to do your reading and read the assignment instructions.
While a bit of a tough grader, his course is fair and he truly cares about his students and will do whatever he can to help you during the course. Highly recommend taking him as long as you are ready to put in the work.
He is a bit of a tough grader but he truly cares about his students and will do whatever he can to help you out and is easy to communicate with. Highly recommend if you are willing to put in the work.
I throughly enjoyed the class. Be ready to write is my one piece of advice. He will give word criteria (ex: 250-300 words per question). I would suggest shooting for 200+ words over that criteria.
Prof Kamrath is going to expect you to do the readings and you are going to need to do a lot of writing. For a Lit student this is a great class, cuz there are great readings. Instructions are clear, so just put in the work. You will learn a lot of good info about American Literature. Also Prof Kamrath gives good feedback.
This class has a decent amount of reading each week, but I took it over 6 weeks, so it was accelerated. He was overall a great professor, provided good feedback, graded quickly, and responded to emails quickly, but his grading structure was loose. Basically said what a C would look like and then told you to do better than that if you wanted an A/B
Dr. Kamrath challenged me this semester which I found helpful because it helped me grow as a student and a writer. The reading was heavy but interesting. The homework assignments were engaging and it allowed me to get a better understanding of the subject. The professor is available and quick to respond if you have questions.
Dr. Kamrath is kinda tough, but fair. Weekly discussion posts and mini essays, the longer the better. Keeps up with grading with excellent personalized feedback. Provides supplemental material in the modules. Course is straight forward and well organized. I would take him again. His expectations are clearly stated, and consistent.
Since graduating, I think back on my time with UCF, and the first thing that comes to mind is taking these courses with Professor Kamrath and how much I thoroughly enjoyed the readings, and all the space I had to fall in love with reading all over again. So long as you take an interest in this work, you'll have a wonderful time in his class!
Professor Kamrath runs a challenging yet rewarding class. The readings are heavy but engaging, and the assignments allow you to really dive into the material. Though a tough grader, he provides great feedback to help you improve. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for prepping.
Good Professor. Class is challenging but also rewarding. You will learn useful information in surprisingly engaging ways.
He's a professor who wants assignments done a specific way, but makes sure you know exactly what to do to get the best grade. It took me half the semester to get used to his grading for discussion posts, but the class was smooth sailing once I did. Even for a fully online course, he provided detailed feedback, especially for the final project.
He is great professor. There is a lot of reading for each week and occasionally videos to watch with them, so be prepared to take the time needed for that. He is a tough grader and really expects you to go above and beyond to get the A grade, but on every assignment, he gives helpful feedback and is genuinely interested in helping his students.
This professor is tough but fair. At the beginning it takes a while to realize what he is looking for in assignments and discussion posts. When you "meet" the criteria it is like C work so make sure to exceed the requirements. Once you understand the grading his course is interesting and challenging.
You will not receive higher than a 96% on any assignment, no matter the effort, because Kamrath refuses to give an 100% period. Midterm/Final are open note with 3ish hours to complete but are 20 MCQ, 5 short answer, and an essay WITH in text citations and a thesis statement. Get ready to fight for your life for an A (instead of A- at 93 or lower).
Chill guy, pretty easy class, just cite from your textbook a lot for high grades in discussion & paper
Professor Kamrath truly wants his students to succeed and it shows in his feedback. Beware, it is a fairly reading and writing heavy course. But that is to be expected for a course of this level. I've taken two of his classes so far and am looking forward to a third!
Professor Kamrath provides interesting texts and interactive lectures that usually only fall short thanks to lack of class participation (in my case at least.) His work load is a decent amount, and his grading can be tough, but if you put in a good effort he grades fair and well. It's not an easy A, but an interesting class and an easy high B.
Professor Kamrath really wants his students to do well. It's not hard to receive a good grade in this class if you just read texts, go to class, cite the book, and do the work. He gives good feedback and even cared enough to learn each of his students names during our in person classes :) Would take him again! Recommend him if you're on the fence
This class is a good way to be exposed to early American texts you won't find in lower level classes and the professor is truly excited about the readings. However, if you're taking this class for an easy A, don't it's a big commitment. The class has 50-100 pages of reading and discussions/week and a midterm and final with long essay questions.
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Kamrath's Romantic Authors course. I know many students are concerned about the "odds" of receiving an A for the course. I assure you Professor Kamrath's criteria and feedback is clear enough to guide students to an A. In my years taking online courses at UCF, I have never encountered a professor that rivals him.
There's a LOT of reading in this course, so don't take unless you're prepared to put in time outside of class. The professor gives clear grading criteria and it's not hard to succeed if you take detailed notes during lectures and want to learn. Although the exams include essay qs they're based on what he talks about so just go to the lectures.
Professor Kamrath was an amazing professor! He is passionate about the subject matter he teaches and passing his assignments aren't difficult. There is a lot of reading in this class but that's expected and not hard at all. Show up to class because it's mandatory to pass and do your assignments because it'll definitely help you on the exams.
He was a great teacher. Overall great grading that was tough but made sense and helped me focus in certain areas in my writing. Resulted in me getting an A, which I feel very proud of. I am taking him again for another course next semester!
Promptly replies to emails and provides feedback when needed. Prepare to read a lot in a short period, providing a discussion post and replies by the end of the week.
Does a good job at interacting with students and giving constructive feedback. Helps apply the real world to literary analysis. Would take this course again.
Weekly discussions and biweekly essays. The grading for DB are heavily graded for participation, make sure you reply to your classmates. Midterm and final tests, one course paper. There are lots of reading for the DB, but poems take a bulk of the reading. Professor is nice, just make sure to participate and turn everything in.
Professor Kamrath expects a good amount from his students; as the course goes on, we're expected to read more pieces of literature and answer broader questions in discussion posts or similar assignments. There are also two tests and a final paper, but outside of those, I really enjoyed his class! His lectures are interesting and he's there to help!
Took one of Dr. Kamrath's classes online before this one. Both classes had plentiful feedback and engaging content, 100% would take again!
Be prepared to read a lot. Take a lot of notes. In discussions when it says there is a minimum of two posts. You need to go above and beyond and do five plus posts to get full credit. Professor is a very clear grater and gives useful and meaningful feedback on everything you submit. It's easy to understand why you got the grade that you got.
An aspect that I enjoyed about Professor Kamrath's class was his immaculate feedback and guidance in terms of moving forward and improving your grades over the semester.
Lots of reading, and definitely get it done. Reply more than the minimum in discussions [5+]. Make sure you follow the rubric. Reach out to him with questions and he replies fast. MLA cite everything!
Overall, this was a very interesting and enjoyable class! There's lots of reading, but the assignments aren't bad as long as you manage your time well. Dr. Kamrath is very quick at responding to emails, provides great feedback, and is super helpful when it comes to any difficulties. I would love to have him as a professor again.
Overall I did enjoy the class and professor. It was a lot of reading, but I though the grades were fair and feedback was plentiful. We did have to pick a topic for the final paper before going over some of the course material that we could write about which was a bit odd and challenging.
A lot of writing, but the class is very engaging and the Professor is very responsive. I also took it during summer, so that contributed to the amount of work. The Final is also super easy, since it's open book and all the answers are given to you through the professor's weekly feedback.
Engaging lectures based on the readings for the week. Gives good feedback on the assignments and papers. There are quite a few essays, but they are easy to complete if you do the readings.
I had Dr. Kamrath's intro to digital humanities class. The class is very easy as long as you do the required readings and watch the required videos. You're basically guaranteed to pass any assignment. Also make sure to read the instructions thoroughly the guidelines aren't always clear. However he's easy to reach if you need clarification.
He is very easy to get in touch with, but his responses can be vague. Be specific in how you ask questions, and follow up if you need. Don't expect an A. Maybe if you are a full time student with no other responsibilities, maybe you can spend every waking hour trying to meet Dr. Kamrath's standards. Otherwise, commit yourself to an A-. You'll live.
