He is the hardest teacher I think I have ever had. The few examples he does in class seem easy enough and you feel confident on the quizzes but then the tests are NOTHING like the other work you've done. I'll admit chemistry is not my best subject but I have NEVER been this confused and I'm an engineering major. A definite DO NOT take.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. When I first read the reviews for Dr. Kearley I thought the people writing them did bad beacause they just never went to class. But no I went to class everyday and studied at least 5 times a weeek and I still recieved a C in this class. This proffesor sucks and cannot teach!
His class is extremely difficult but I have to honestly say I've learned more from him than in any chemistry class I've ever been in. I STRONGLY recommend going to office hours, he's there usually longer than most professors and is extremely helpful. He's really nice and will get you to actually learn the material.
I do not wish anyone the misery you have to go through during this class. Yes I learned a lot of chemistry, but the class is way hard. The only reason I got the grade I did was having a knack for chemistry (being a science person) and by doing 16 pages of problems for each test, and that's not exaggerating, Take another professor.
Yes, he is a hard professor, but if you go to his office hours, you WILL get a good grade! If you get to know him, he will curve. For example, my final grade was an 85%, but he gave me an A-!
I took Dr. Kearley for Chem 1 and will be taking him for Chem 2. The class is not easy, and doing ALL the problems from the book is required to do well. If you go to office hours and show you are trying, he will curve you a whole letter grade. He loves the subject, so spend some time getting to know him and you will do great.Take honors if you can.
Although his tests are extremely hard, Dr.Kearley is a great guy who is really interested in what he teaches. In the honors class he showed immense respect for all of his students and knew everyone by name.
It's chemistry - it's not supposed to be easy. The only problem I really had was the tests and quizzes, which I thought was hard to study for because the examples in his lectures are fifty times easier. STUDY. Or you will fail. Guaranteed.
Hardest class I've ever taken- avoid this professor. His lectures are easy and clear with the simplest examples, the quizzes are fair, but his exams are completely impossible. I would do every homework problem 4 times and still get C's on his tests- and I'm an A student. If you get stuck taking him, go to office hours daily and become his friend.
Dr. Kearley really is a great professor. His tests are very difficult, but not impossible. If you actually understand the problems in the book, not just do them a few times, you will be able to understand and do the problems on his exams. They are just compilations of 4 questions in 1.
really nice guy, but can be a little harsh on the grading. he covers the topics in class but expect to do a good bit of out of class studying to totally understand the concepts. overall a good prof, just don't expect to get a stellar grade if you don't work for it
hard professor. he's really very friendly and nice and is definitely enthusiastic about chemistry, but his tests are INSANE. class doesn't really prep you for the exams, doing the hw problems and reading the text book is a must if you want to get out with a decent grade. good luck :/
Worst teacher. So Hard. Goes over nothing in class that is on the test. Do NOT take him!
Hes so nice but his tests are SOOOOO hard!!!!! uhhh!!!! hes a good professor to bump into in office hours if you need help in class, but even that wont save you on his tests. maybe find another prof if you want an A
You might be ok and make a good grade if you memorize the entire book, do every homework problem assigned and extra, never miss a single class, and spend every waking moment of your free time in office hours.
I made a huge mistake taking Kearley. Me and 3 friends took him and all of us failed miserably. Expect to do hours upon hours WEEKLY of online homework that is unrelated and unnecessarily hard. Easy to understand and lectures can be interesting but the quizzes and tests are often 10x harder than examples used in class. Dont take if u want an A
Dr. Kearley is a great teacher. Everyone who complains about him clearly does not put in the effort. I received an A- in his Chem II class and it is very possible. His quizzes are easy and a great grade booster. He also does Mastering Chem which also helps bump up your grade. In order to do well do ALL the book problems and go to any office hours!
I had him for chm 1 and 2 and his tests are EXTREMELY difficult. Chm 1 was simple because it was familiar but I struggled in chem 2. I did every prob but still came out of his tests feeling terrible. Lectures are amazing though. Understanding however, as he bumped me from a B to A- for acing the final. No other grades besides tests and quizzes tho
Dr. Kearley is a very hard teacher. However, if you go his office may 2-3 hrs a week and do EVERY problem from the book it is easy to get an A. The test questions pretty much come exactly from the book. He's a great teacher and lecturer and you will learn a lot!
TERRIBLE TEACHER. DO NOT TAKE. Gives irrelevant examples that do NOT help and doesn't even know what he is talking about when going thru problems. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING HIM FOR ANYTHING. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
" for our final, we are going to take all the problems you guys had trouble on in the other exams, and put it all together" so let's test you on every thing you failed without much extra clarification in between.
Had him for orgo 1. Best professor I've had at FSU. He makes class fun. His exams are meant to challenge you and stretch the way you think, so DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS HE SUGGESTS. I put a lot of time into the class and did well. I recommend him over any orgo teacher.
Very nice guy and does try to engage students, but his absurdly difficult exams and "playing favorites" with grading tip the scale to the poor side. Seek another professor.
Wants to help students but his teaching style isnt for everybody. Doesnt do many examples in class& assigns tons of book probs, most arent on the exam. Our TAs couldnt solve some of the test problems. Tests harder than quizzes. I understood concepts in his lecture but tests looked foreign. However he passed me b/c I attended excessive office hours.
NOT a class for the faint of heart. You don't really learn that much in class itself. Instead you have to go to office hours frequently. If you want to pass you MUST do ALL of the book problems he assigns and study them before the test. He is pretty much available 24/7 to help people but the way he teaches challenges even the best students.
Kearley isn't a professor that even the brightest students should take. His class and lectures are useless. His tests are far more difficult than any of the hundreds of problems he provides for practice. The students who basically live in his office get OK grades, but no one else. His class will make all of your grades suffer. Avoid Kearley!
Kearley makes things way harder than they need to be! In class he only gives one easy example if he gives it at all and the tests are totally different. He doesn't care about sig figs and other important chemistry fundamentals that will be vital when moving up to organic and such. His tests often have questions everyone gets wrong. Do not take him!
He makes everything way harder than it needs to be. My high school chem teachers taught better than him. Sometimes I think he doesn't know what he is talking about. Exams are extremely difficult. His lectures are really no help. I taught myself using my high chem notebook. Horrible experience so far!
Kearley is a very hard professor. He is unclear and you won't get much use unless you go to office hours. You MUST study daily in order to pass. Do all the problems 4 times and you can end up with a B...maybe.
He's a fantastic teacher. You need to do the practice problems in the book and you need to understand what you're doing and not just memorize. He has office hours all the time, so you have no excuse to not do well. People who have been failing give up exceptionally easily and don't always show up to class.
Amazing professor that is very knowledgable and consistent with his teachings. Very known in his department. Has office hours throughout the semester (unlike other professors that only have them once or twice a week). Recommended if you want a challenge. Very humorous and class is enjoyable. Knows what he is teaching and loves his job. Take him!
He is very nice and approachable and genuinely cares for his students, however he expects A LOT from them. Tests are much harder than the notes would lead you to believe. He looks down on those who don't earn A's it seems. He is very willing to help though and always has plentiful office hours. Get your tests regraded and do EVERY practice problem.
I got an A in Dr Kearley's class but I'll be completely honest: he is extremely difficult. He's a very good professor but he really challenges everyone. His tests require you to do EVERY "optional" homework problem multiple times. I personally did each one about three times before the exams. Take him if you really want to learn the material. Gl
AMAZING professor who really cares about his students. It is important to do ALL of the practice problems if you want to do well. He is always available for help and office hours are a guaranteed way to do well. I recieved an A in the class and only went to his office about twice a week (not everyday!) Not an easy class, but really enjoyable!!
Good lecturer, makes class interesting and seems very nice. Never went to office hours or anything but still ended up making an A in the class. Apparently his tests are harder than some other professors. Make sure you do the masteringchemistry.
Dr. Kearley makes class interesting, his handwriting is legible, and he speaks clearly. His class is extremely difficult. The practice problems he gives you - DO THEM! He pulls most of his test questions from the practice problems he assigns. If you go to his office hours, he will tell you which ones are his favorites. They will be on the test!
I got a B in the class. If I can do it so can you. Just do the practice problems, ask him about the ones you don't understand. Review them, go over your notes and you should do as well as I did or even better.
He is a great teacher, and nice person. However, he is extremely difficult. I had to drop his class. Be ready to work your butt off. Be ready for chemistry to be your world if you take him.
The man has very entertaining lectures. He will teach you things that you will need later but his exams are hard afff. The quizzes are okay just do the ALL prac hw. Especially the ones at the end. The test will be ALL the hard hw ? with different #. If you havent took chm since 9th grade good luck.
He is a great professor, I loved him. I had to work really hard in his class and do ALL the homework problems (more than once), but I felt like I learned a lot. I'm glad I took him because I already know a lot of the CHM1046 material. His tests are very hard. Quizzes are easy as long as you do the homework problems in the book.
Best Chemistry professor you could ask for. Yes, he is hard, but if you go to his office hours regularly he will help you get a good grade.
I had Doc Kearley for Honors Gen Chem I and II. I love this man. He's extremely knowledgeable and he'll impart you with some of his wisdom, but you're going to have to work for your grade. I did well in the course when I actually went to class and did the homework. If you're willing to work, you couldn't ask for a better teacher.
Terrible teacher. Gives easy examples in class that students can understand ten gives unreasonably hard test questions. Do not take him, I spent TONS of time studying and doing practice problems but nothing was similar to what was on the test. Nice man, but his class is extremely hard unless you spend every waking moment studying.
Such a nice guy. CHM 1020 with him is pretty easy. The material is hard but you get lots of opportunities to make up points. Plus he curves everything a ton, including the final grade.
Took organic 1 and 2 with Dr. Kearly. He is very enthusiastic about what he does and tries to help the students who care in every way he can. He is very clear about what he wants you to know but you better know it thoroughly. There is no way to make organic chemistry easy; all he can do is try to explain it as well as he can.
Dr. Kearley is the BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD AT FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY. I took him for organic 1 and organic 2 and he is very clear and helpful, if you attend his office hours and show him that you care about your grade and your performance in the class, HE WILL HELP YOU! He is a challenging professor, just attend lecture and DO HW PROBLEMS!
I had NO interest in science but he's a great teacher and it turned out to be my favorite class this semester. I barely used my textbook because the tests are all based on what he does in class and he emails you practice problems/answers before tests. He's really cool and actually learns everyones name. Made me consider changing my major from RMPD
Kearley is the BEST teacher I've ever had. I would recommend no one else for anything regarding chemistry. I took him for 3 semesters straight. Gen Chem 1,2, and Orgo 2. He is always available for help. He's actually personable. His tests are fine if you study and are right from what he teaches in class. You'd be dumb not to take him.
If you're taking CHM1020 because you want an easy class to get rid of your science credit... do not take this class with Kearley. If you signed up for a GENERAL chemistry class aka stuff you did in high school... do not take this class. He focused his whole class on organic and biochemistry which is very challenging and not what you signed up for.
Orgo 2 is a difficult class but Kearley is very clear and always willing to help. Tests are challenging but not impossible. He expects a lot from his students. Not an easy class over all but an EXCELLENT prof.
Course is difficult and Kearley likes to keep his exams "interesting", but he is a really great instructor and is willing to help so much that he stays in his office past his hours just to help students. He teaches very well in his lectures and grades every exam himself after his TAs, which he tends to give a lot of extra points.
One of the BEST. Hated Orgo before but now it's my favorite. Did a complete 180. I enjoy going to his class. He's super helpful. Actually teaches. You don't need to read the textbook and barely memorize. His exams were pretty easy if you went to class and understood the material. He grades fairly. Great guy to get to know. Friendly! TAKE HIM!!
His tests are difficult. However I feel like you can understand Organic Chemistry more with him. His lectures clarify things but that doesn't make the exams any easier. He picks really tough questions. The quizzes and homework are probably what helps the most keep your grade up. Lots of studying for this one.
I took him for CHM1020 and was expecting to learn the basic in chem but he taught us organic. At first I was mad because it was stuff I had never seen before but I ended up with an A in the class because he really is there to help you and he goes the extra mile to make sure everyone understands. To do well you def need to go to class & do the hw
The mixed reviews on Kearley come from different learning styles. If you understand concepts to the point where you can see a problem that you've never attempted and nail it, then he's the right guy for you. If you require examples and watching step by step sltn... forget about it. My GPA is 3.8 and I failed his first exam & I had a B+ in Orgo 1.
Kearley is the best professor I've ever had a FSU. I am a Chemistry major so I could be bias but even still he makes the classes fun and interesting. He's willing to sacrifice his time so you understand, and if you put in time he notices. If you're on the line about what professor to take, TAKE KEARLEY!!!
mostly hard. notes dont help, just do book problems he assigns
Horrible teacher. He is so confusing and does not teach well. Tests are impossible and lots of studying needs to be done.
Great guy, Organic chem is going to be hard regardless so it's not an easy class with whoever you take. He really puts effort into making sure you know and understand the material instead of having you just memorize terms. Highly recommend him.
Dr. Kearley is a great teacher. His lectures were interesting, and his goofy demeanor was very entertaining. He gave you everything you needed to get a good grade, however, it was a still a lot of work on your own. If you go to class, do the homework, do the extra book work, and take good notes, you can expect to do well in this class.
He is an amazing teacher. I loved taking Organic with him. He gives you all the tools you need to succeed and is always available for extra help. His class is hard so it is a lot of time on your own. But do every book problem 3x like he says and you will do well. I wish I could take him for Organic 2.
Seriously this man is amazing! He MAKES you understand organic chemistry and is always available in his office to help out. There is no extra credit or dropped exams but if you work hard and go to his office hours then you will do great! Highly recommend him!!
My absolute favorite teacher of all time. I have never experienced a teacher who is so caring and understanding. He is really hard but he will make you love (and sometimes hate) chemistry. Try to get him for any chem class you take. There isn't a better teacher out there.
His office hours are very helpful. This course will not be easy if yo don't do what he recommends.Book problems are helpful for tests and quizzes. In class he does very simple examples but don't expect that on tests. He's a great, friendly, and kind person.
This class was pretty difficult. I barely received an A. Attendance isn't mandatory but highly recommended. Paying attention does wonders for retention of the material. HW is worth 90 pts and is a sig boost; complete it on time and get a 100% on it. Do the book probs thoroughly. Quizzes are easier than the tests, so maximizes your chances on them
Kearley is an amazing professor! He is extremely nice and helpful. You really need to study on a daily/weekly basis to do well in this class because everything builds upon itself. His exams are pretty hard but overall I would most certainly recommend taking this class with Kearley.
TAKE HIM! His lectures are fantastic! Sometimes a little scattered but he knows his stuff. You could tell that he was passionate about what he does. But just DO NOT TEXT in his class, that is the sure fire way to make him upset! Do the practice problems multiple times (at least 3x) and you'll be set to pass his class.
VERY HARD! Material covered in class is nothing compared to what you will see on the exam. Class average on exams with curve is a D- which he thinks is reasonable. good luck passing.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. He is without a doubt the worst teacher I've ever taken. Half-way through the semester and I have a 61…barely. His notes are not applicable to the homework problems, which he claims is what he uses for the tests. FALSE. 30 percent of my class dropped. 70 percent of us are failing. I'm a 3.8 GPA student, until this class.
This class is ridiculously hard. I received 100's on all the quizzes and homeworks, yet I can't pass a single test of his. My average is a 65% and I will be dropping. Exams are WAY harder/trickier than they need to be. No curves for the tests. I dont understand how Kearley accepts such low averages on his exams.
Best teacher of all time. Had him for CHM1045 and 1046. He is very difficult and you will most likely find yourself struggling to do well on the tests, but that is only because he pushes his students to do their best. He is the most caring professor I have ever experienced at FSU and I would love to have him for the rest of my chem classes here.
Don't bother going to office hours, there will be a million other students there, the tests are absolutely impossible, you have to do every practice problem at least 5 times to even begin to understand what will be on the test. Curves tests to make average like a 65% aka- everyones still failing. DO NOT TAKE!
Chem 2 with Kearley will be the death of you. Quizzes are easy enough to ace, but the tests are impossible. He assigns textbook problems for test review but the test will be nothing like the review, so it's pointless. You're going to want to rip your hair out by the end of the semester if you don't drop it before the semester is over.
The most amazing professor I have ever had. Going into orgo I was nervous about it but now I am considering it as a career. He is always in his office, I mean literally if he is not teaching or at lunch he is there from 8-3 every day. Great professor and clearly loves what he does!
Great guy
Dr. Kearley is one of the greatest professors I have ever had and his class was interesting. Before I took his class, I did not know if chemistry was for me but after taking his class, I realized that I wanted to change my major. He is helpful if you go to his office hours and his tests are not too difficult. I am glad I have him for CHM 1046 now!
Dr. Kearley is amazing! The course is definitely difficult, as any organic chem class will be, but he is always available to help you understand. He is very clear and easy to understand and really cares about his students. If you study hard and go to his office hours you'll be fine. Definitely recommend, but be prepared to work!
Don't bother going to office hours, because there are so many students going to class. The examples he gives in class are nothing like the questions on the test. Even if you do the homework problems 2+ times you'll probably still fail all of the tests! DO NOT TAKE
Great teacher, really makes you understand the material. Tough class though so be prepared to work a lot.
Dr. Kearley is so passionate about what he teaches, so when you go to his office hours he will always help you. They get crazy the week of a test, but if you go before they are empty and he is super helpful. His tests are hard, so you really need to study a lot and stay on top of everything. Really nice guy and very willing to help.
Kearley has been my favorite teacher at FSU so far!! If you are looking for easy chemistry college classes, good luck! This teacher will be worth your time! He truly cares about his students and will make the effort to help you as long as you meet him half way!
such a good teacher! not an easy A but actually teaches you something, just make sure to do the homework and well enough on the weakly quizzes. Says he doesn't curve but my friend failed the class and he gave her a C because she showed "interest and improvement"
Most people who did well in his class were the one's who had him already in Chem 1. I did not like his teaching style. Tests are extremely hard. He feels happy when the class average is 65% and thinks that he did his job well. Very few opportunities of extra credit. He is nice and helpful if you go during office hours but WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HIM!!!
Definitely my favorite professor at FSU. He's tough and you will have to study a lot, but all of the questions on the test are basically copied from the homework assignments he gives you, just with different numbers. He is always in his office and is willing to help. The ones that failed are the ones who didn't do the homework he assigned.
His tests are definitely hard. You have to do the book problems and understand them and you'll do ok on the tests. Do yourself a favor and use StudyEdge. They're videos and study guides are very helpful and it's what helped me pass :)
He is the most amazing professor Ive had at FSU. I had him for Orgo 1 and 2. I lived in his office to do well on the exams. You really need to go to office hours and you'll do fine. He says to do the practice problems three times, and that is what works. 98 on first exam. The kids who don't pass are the ones who don't put in the work. Amazing guy!
The key to passing his class is to do and understand the book problems he assigns. I suggest to do them no less than 3 times each. He posts the answers to the hw problems so you can see if you're doing it right. There are 8 quizzes and he drops the lowest; 3 exams and a final; connect hw problems. First test was the hardest. He offers a lot of help
DO NOT TAKE !
Dr. Kearley is an amazing professor and person. His exam are very difficult but I would take him again without question. Understand terminologyconcepts, go to office hours (at the beginning of the semester), and practice the homework problems if you want an A. His exams are hard but he's extremely sweet and helpful (and much better than Collins!).
Prof. Kearley is a really nice guy and will help you as much as he can. With that said in the end it won't matter. His test are extremely difficult because they questions are twisted word problems. By the time you're done untwisting, you don't know what to do anymore. He DOES NOT curve. Uses online HW that is terrible. No fluff.
Go to office hours, be friends with him. He will round your grade up at the end if you show improvement over exams. Exams are difficult but manageable if you DO THE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS like he says. He's helpful if you put in the effort. Like the exams, quizzes also come from the HW problems.
I wouldn't recommend taking Dr. Kearley for Chem2 if you didn't have him for Chem1. He seemed to prefer the students that he taught for both courses. His quizzes in recitation were super easy (I got 70%-100%) but the tests are much harder. Definitely do the recommended practice problems and go to office hours. Always read before class.
Great teacher. Great guy. Exams are easy IF you do the assigned homework problems. Dr. Kearley will love you if you go to office hours. There is an older edition of the book online so dont waste your money. Also if you go to office hours Dr. Kearley has no problem letting you take pictures of the HW problems. Cool guy but do hw probs.
Impossible exams and overall extremely difficult class to pass. He will help you if you go to office hours but even with doing well on every single quiz and getting all of the homework points Its still hard to pass.
He is friendly but his class his extremely difficult. The average for each test was around a 65 and the tests are not curved. At the end of the semester he applied a 2% curve to the final grade which basically helped no one. His lectures are hard to learn from so prepare for late nights to learn the material by your self. Would not take again
This is a very hard class so prepare to work.
The class is extremely hard so prepare for a hard semester. He is friendly and willing to help.
Get ready to study your butt OFF!! Quizzes are easy, but the tests are very hard. Make sure to go to his office hours and do the book homework problems that he assigns. He is a tough but a great person overall.
Chemistry is not my forte, so I did all of the homework problems at least twice and went to his office hours multiple times a week, but no matter how hard I studied I could never pass any of his 4 exams. He makes every test and makes them extremely hard with tons of curveballs. Go to class for notes, don't read the chapters, do ALL online hw!
Dr. Kearley delivers amazing lectures and is a phenomenal professor. You will learn an immense amount but you may not pass. His tests seem impossible and because you learn so much, he expects that much more from you. He is fair and honest. I would recommend you learn from him but take a different teacher for a possibly easier tests better grade!
Dr. Kearley is a fantastic professor and person. He is in his office every day and pours his time into his students. To study for his tests you MUST do ALL of the homework and thoroughly reviewrework every lecture problem. His tests come straight from his quizzes, hw, and lectures. Overall, he is your best chance at an A if you do the work.
Kearley smart guy +knows his material+willing to help. WORK WORK WORK It's an unwritten law in his class that if you do not show up to his office hrs, your chances of passing the class at all decrease by at least 50%. I LIVED in his office, and there are a lot of students there that fight for his attention with help with book problems. A LOT !
Need to work for your grade. DO THE HOMEWORK. Don't be a suck up but make sure you're prepared if you ask him for help. Get to know him and it will help if you need it at the end of the semester. If you know someone from last semester, the tests are very similar. Study and know the homework assignments and you will get an A.
The tests are strait forward if you do the practice problems (which he gives a lot). He is hands down the nicest instructor I have every taken. Go to his office hours! I recommend taking him not only because his lectures are very good but more importantly because he is a great person.
Dr. Kearley is a great professor. His tests are pretty tough, but if you do the homework and the OPTIONAL practice problems for the book, you'll do fine on all of his tests. I never went to his office hours, but I knew a lot of people who did and they all said wonderful things about how helpful he was. Great guy.
I have had Kearley for two semesters now and I wish that I could take him for the rest of my classes. He wants all of his students to pass and is always in his office. You can stop in any time and he will help you. He grades pretty leniently on test and gives lots of partial credit. Take if you can!!
I wish I would've taken Kearley for Orgo 1 bc I was so lost the first day of Orgo 2! I definitely improved but Kearley makes you work hard for it by doing as many problems as you can. Tests are SO much harder than the problems you do. He is in his office a lot to help you if you have a question or just want to do HW there. DONT USE PHONE IN CLASS!
If you go to office hours at least once a week, do all of the homework problems, and reread your lecture notes before each exam, you CAN do well in this class. Dr. Kearley is hands-down the most caring teacher I have ever had. I took him for orgo I and II and he curved me up both times for improvement. Taking him is the best decision I've made @FSU
Took him for Orgo I and II. This was his first time teaching biochem at FSU and he did pretty well. He puts more of an organic spin on the class than other professors, which I liked. He poured his heart and soul into that class. 6-week summer B crash course. 1% curve at the end. The homework and lectures prepare you sufficiently for the tests.
Chemistry was never my forte but Dr. Kearley made it the best class I have ever taken. I took him for orgo 1, 2 and biochemistry as well. He changed my life. Go to his office hour and he will teach you about subject matter as well as life. His office is always crowded because THAT many people love him! Take him if you can! It's life changing
He goes through material really quickly, but he explains things really well, so go to class! The tests are a lot harder than the homework and quizzes, but he's really helpful if you go to his office hours. Oh, and DON'T USE YOUR CELL PHONE.
Dr. Kearley is a GREAT guy and a good teacher as well. If you: 1) go to class 2) do the assigned HW problems 3) check out his office hours, you'll do fine in the class. Yes, his tests are tough, but if you apply yourself and actually do the textbook problems and learn the concepts, you'll do fine.
Great guy, really knows his stuff. He is also without a doubt the teacher with the hardest tests and quizzes I have ever encountered in my life. Textbook is a must-have. Lecture material generally doesn't even show up on tests, do make sure to study the book for hours upon hours.
Took him because my sister advised me to. Regretted it at first because I heard his tests were hard. Its true. The tests are long and difficult, but if you know the homework questions like the back of your hand the tests aren't horrible. Go into office hours as much as you can and you should be fine. He is very willing to help you out.
Kearley is one of the only organic chem teachers at fsu who actually teaches the material and isn't a jerk. He's an extremely nice dude and offers plenty of help to his students. The material is tough but its organic chem so what else do you expect. Go to class, do the homework problems he assigns, get a tutor if you need and you will do well
Dr Kearley is one of the best professors at FSU. Most of the time he's available to help you if you're having issues with any chemistry concept. He tells the class what they need to do to pass the class and as long one does it, the class is much easier. His exams are hard IF you don't do the practice problems in the textbook and skip lectures.
His tests are pretty hard and he can get sidetracked during lectures, but overall Kearley is a very good teacher. The optional homework problems are a must if you want to get good grades on his exams and quizzes.
Do the work from the beginning! If you go to his office hours you will really enjoy the class, even if you hate chemistry. Dr. Kearley is a true teacher. He cares about his students and really wants you to learn. He will work as hard as you do to make sure you learn the material. Go to class, go to office hours, do homework and you will pass.
Going to class is a must or you won't understand what's going on. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS FROM DAY ONE! Just go in there and work on practice problems and Kearley will help you understand how to solve any issue you encounter. Kearley is an amazing professor that devotes his time to his students. Work hard and you will earn the grade you desire.
I was failing this class all semester long because I just did not understand the concepts. I went to office hours and suddenly my grade was slowly increasing. He is very understanding and really wants his students to do well in his class. Go to office hours, have him know you on a first name basis, and he will really help you out in the end!
Do all the book problems he assigns and quizzes will be a breeze and tests will be similar to the problems in the quizzes. He's a hard teacher and will make you work for your grade but he is more than willing to help in office hours. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS HE IS SO HELPFUL.
Easily drifts off topic and does not teach.
He is an awesome professor. Teaches with great details and has office house basically all day every day. His test are extremely hard and this is because he is an awesome teacher so he makes you work.
He was an amazing teacher--probably my favorite! I find chemistry to be a hard subject and stayed at a C+ for a while until I started going to his office hours. The homework isn't graded or collected, but will definitely help you. He helps out students' grades at the end, especially if you went to office hours. He is so helpful if you try!
if you fight for your grade and show you care about improving by going to his office hours he will generously curve you up. sweet and funny professor, who really takes the time to get to know his students. his tests are tough but DO. THE. BOOK. PROBLEMS. I promise you they will be in a conceptual form on his tests.
Kearley is the man; easily one of the greatest guys you'll ever meet, both in the field of chemistry and off. Really passionate about chemistry and teaching which makes a boring and frustrating subject actually enjoyable. Make sure you go to office hours, do every book problem twice, and of course show up to class.
Dr. Kearley is a very nice person and a great chemistry teacher. To do well on the tests, you need to make sure you can do all the homework problems.
Take this class seriously, do the homework problems, study for the tests, and you'll get an A. The dude is awesome and loves teaching.
Dr. Kearney is absolutely amazing! He genuinely cares about helping his students succeed, and makes himself completely available to anyone who seeks out help. Go to office hours, do the homework problems and go to class and you should do well. Favorite professor I've had in college :)
Dr. Kearley is a great professor! He cares about his students and if you go to his office hours he will help your grade. DO THE BOOK PROBLEMS! If you do that you will pass his class and he will help you as much as he can.
complete and understand the book problems and go to lecture and you will pass with ease, if you still need help he always is available for assistance.
Kearley goes out of his way for his students do well. However, my study techniques were far off from the way he teaches his organic students. I work by using examples and practice repetitively until I know how to work step-by-step. If that's you, I wouldn't recommend taking Kearley for his organic classes. You'll have a tough time in his class.
Kearley is one of the best professors I've had at FSU! He made me really enjoy orgo and he's such a nice guy. Orgo is hard no matter what, but if you put in effort, study well, and pay attention in lecture, you'll be fine. Homework problems are way harder than his tests, so don't waste too much time on those. Definitely would take again!
Very tough class. Kearly will help if you go to office hours but you have to know the material forwards, backwards, and upside-down in order to do well in this class. He likes to throw in curveballs on the tests that are slightly different from the homework but just enough to derail your thinking process.
Tough, tough class but Kearley is a great teacher and genuinely wants everybody to do well. He is very clear about expectations for class and I cannot stress the importance of doing the assigned practice problems. They are the difference between doing well and failing. Tests are hard but fair. I wish i was able to take Orgo 1 with him.
Dr. Kearley is a good professor. Orgo 2 is hard but he tells you what you need to know for tests and assigns plenty of homework problems to help you study. I got outside help just to clarify some of the material. Quiz each week in recitation, 4 unit exams and cumulative final. No need to read the book. Study hard and do your homework!
Summer B crash course. Very fast-paced and really required keeping up with material. Three exams and final, which were fair if you pay attention to lectures and do homework. Very helpful in office hours. Class consists of three things: memorization, math, and mechanisms. Could not imagine a much better professor. No textbook required. C+ average
Dr. Kearley is definitely one of the most caring professors I have ever come across. He's a great help in his office hours. However, when I took him he made it optional to buy the online hw course and I feel like that hurt my grade a lot since I just went off the book. I also feel that most ppl who pass have a strong background in chem.
One of the best professors I've ever had. If you have to take chem take it with him. It's a tough subject and he doesn't dumb it down for you, but he is really good about having office hours and giving partial credit where he can. Genuinely cares about all of his students and is just a cool guy in general.
Dr. Kearley was hands down the best teacher I've ever had. He was so enthusiastic about what he was teaching and never hesitated to answer any questions. His office hours are also very accessible and helpful. Dr. Kearley takes the time to get to know each student beyond his or her chemistry capability. He is reasonable and a fair grader.
Dr. Kearly is a great teacher but he gets very impatient when teaching at office hours. He has a temper and will most likely make you feel worthless sometimes. But the class isnt that bad. But it does require practice. Sit and do the homework multiple times in order to get the material
This is the most challenging course Ive ever taken. I fought so hard for my B. Im so glad Im done with orgo. I dont recommend this professor at all. He did nothing but tear me down this whole semester. Id rather struggle with another teacher that has the patience to teach me the material when I ask for help
Great professor but simply would not recommend because most of the time he doesn't have the patience to explain the material futher during office hours. There are other professors, he's not the only one. I love him as a professor but I'm honestly being real. You're paying for tuition so sign up for a professor who'll give you your money's worth
Dr. Kearley is hands down the best professor I've ever had. Show you care and work hard and he will give you tons of help in office hours. Go to class, and do the homework problems over and over again. Fair grader and used partial credit. He made me love Organic Chemistry, something I never thought was possible.
GREAT at teaching, very helpful at office hours (sometimes), BUT has no patience. Made this caucasian young lady cry in office hours once and she said he made her feel stupid, all because she asked a question. The course is difficult and was introduced for the first time last semester. He seems to forget that. He did get better at being patient.
I actually loved this class and learning the material but the professor oh my goodness exploded too much on students. Very unnecessary.
Would never take again a day in my life. Great at teaching but explodes when students dont understand. Who does that? After Orgo, I truly regret taking his biochem class
If you value your education sign up for someone else for both orgo and biochem. Both classes are hard already but when you have an uncooperative professor who doesnt care how much you go to office hours and ignores your requests for a tutor, it makes the class even more difficult. Not worth the stress.
I hate to even have to type this. Everyone talks about how great he is but when you actually have him, you realize he completely doesnt care for students who doesnt understand things right away. Very great professor and great at teaching but not as nice as people describe and not as willing to help even when you put in much effort.
I would rather have Dillon as a professor than him. I truly hate this man. He doesnt deserve to be teaching at all. Take any other professor for biochem.
Save yourself the trouble
Very rude to students and a bit irrational.
Dr. Kearley is a great professor, he just covers incredibly difficult test material and expects the students to remember to most minute details for exams. I took CHM3217 in the fall semester (the first time it was ever taught) and it was difficult, he made you work for the grade, but he was also very open to offering help. CHM3218 is no different.
Best chemistry professor I've had at FSU hands down.
Was one of the best professors that I ever had at FSU. I had him for general chemistry 2 and organic 1 and 2. Go to his office hours and you WILL pass any class you take of his. Also the more he sees you try and put effort in he will take into account for your final grade.
He is a great professor for upper division but not for this class he had organic questions on our first test so you know.
If you even bother going to lectures they are extremely vague and unhelpful for the crappy hw problems. I wasted my time going to all of them thinking they would actually help. I was a bio major and have already switched my major and my changed my career path due to his class. He made me feel like it was impossible to pass the simplest chem class.
He gives you a giant packet of questions and tells you to do each problem 3 times and that's it. All of the quizes and exams are based off of those questions. His lectures are fine but he approaches each subject as a review which can be confusing. Hes very accessible outside of class, and he's overall an ok teacher.
Mark Kearley ruined my Freshman year. Terrible professor and I would not advise anyone to take him. He does not give extra credit or help his students out in any way. Im sure he is good at teaching organic chemistry but that contributes to his downfall in Chemistry one because he is incapable of teaching basic chemistry one material.
DO NOT TAKE. Worst Professor at FSU. Does not care for his students at all and clearly can't teach a simple chemistry class to students with little chemistry background.
He assumes that everyone is on the same page as far as their prior knowledge of Chemistry. I was often left confused and the thick packet of "practice questions" weren't of great use because I had the answers next to me.
Terrible Professor. If you get stuck with him don't bother even taking chemistry and wait till the next semester. Trust me.
if you plan on making an A or B def do not take. Tests are way too hard compared to other professors. Mark Kearley doesn't help his students out nearly as much as any other chemistry professor. Terrible teacher and person.
Don't take this class unless you know a ton about Chemistry. His lectures are basically reviews and are useless when you don't understand Chemistry very well in the first place.
If you do not have much prior Chemistry experience do not take this class. I'm sure he's a great orgo teacher because I've heard that's his main specialty, but this class is rough. Lectures don't help much and are pretty vague, and quizzes are easy to study for if you have several hours a week, but exams are very hard and are nothing like quiz/hw
Highly recommend taking if you are continuing past chem 1. He is an AMAZING teacher and is so helpful and accessible outside of class in office hours. He truly cares about his students and will more than prepare you for future chem classes. However, his tests are notoriously very difficult so if you only need chem 1, take a different professor.
Even doing the hw & going to office hours, I almost failed the class. He assumed everyone had prior knowledge of chem, and his lectures are basically just reviews over content & all over the place. Take at your own risk. spent 2 weeks before final studying & managed to pass with a low C.
I did all of the homework at least three times (as Kearley said) and still ended up with a 76% in this class. Do NOT take him if you have no prior knowledge of chemistry or if you do not need chemistry after gen chem 1. It is not worth the hit this class will take to your GPA. Just don't do it, this class made me miserable and I tried so hard.
Kearley was very helpful to me in learning Organic Chemistry. Going to office hours was very easy and he was available everyday to help out. I got Cs in all of my Chem classes before this and he was still able to teach me, so he could teach you too.
Nice enough, but can be sort of condescending. Must read textbook and do homework problems (more than once) to get an A. You cannot depend on just his lectures for all of the information. It is possible to miss a few classes and pass, but I would encourage attendance. I would take this professor again, but he wouldn't be my first choice.
Dr. Kearley loves to work with students, and being in a small honors course with him was awesome. He skips the basics in lectures, so if you're unfamiliar with chemistry it can be difficult. All test/quiz questions are variations of the given homework problems. He is amazing in office hours and he will round your grade if he knows you worked hard.
Dr. Kearley really cares about his students and is willing to help outside of class. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. My biggest regret was not spending more time getting help from him. If you do not do the homework problems, you will not pass the exams.
Dr. Kearley is very down to earth, passionate in his field, and he demonstrates a lot of knowledge in chemistry. YOU HAVE to work for your grade. I recommend going to office hours THE FIRST DAY AND EVERY DAY AFTER the entire semester and make sure he knows who you are and show effort at all times. DO THE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS MORE THAN THREE TIMES.
Hardest class Ive ever taken at FSU. Lectures dont go in depth into topics then expects you to know the most complex problems in the homework. The class average on the first test was just over 60 and he was proud of himself. Theres hope but youve gotta work hard.
HORRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE. Thats all I have to say.
This class is very TEST and QUIZ HEAVY, hopefully, you get a great TA. The tests relate to the homework so do the homework like five times over again to even think of passing. There's a large curve, but don't rely on it.
Prof. Kearley is a nice man that cares about his students; however, for CHM1045 he taught as though we all had a stronger background in Chemistry than a lot of us actually did. If you want to do well in this class, you should reach out to him and your TAs and go over the concepts in the given problems and understand them to the best of your ability
took for one semester orgo, go to office hours! Best professor at FSU hands down
Dr. Kearley changed organic chemistry for me. After failing Hilinski's class miserably I never thought I would be able to understand it but it is now my favorite subject. Organic chemistry requires work and if you meet Dr. Kearley in the middle you will succeed because he's a huge help in and out of class.
Dr. Kearley is the best professor I've ever had. He cares about his students and is willing to help. Go to his office hours early on in the semester, otherwise you might struggle more like I did! My expected grade does not reflect how amazing this class is, because I didn't start seeing him until after a failed exam. HE WILL HELP! Take this class!
Dr. Kearley truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. If you do the homework like he says to, and see him during office hours, you will do well. Organic chemistry is challenging, and he knows that, but he helps his students as much as he can.
Dr. Kearley is an amazing professor! Orgo is difficult, but he is clear with his expectations, gives straight forward tests, and is incredibly generous with partial credit. To do well in the course, you have to go to class and repeat the homework multiple times like he suggests, but he clearly cares about his students and it shows. Take him!
He acts like you already know Chemistry and does not actually teach with his lectures it just feels like he names concepts but never goes in depth. He has a peppy attitude but can seem condescending when you ask for help. If you T.A. is trash, just drop the class ASAP. A withdrawl will definitely look better than a fail.
He seems very nice in class but is incredibly rude when you ask him for help in office hours. He treats you like you should already know everything and makes you feel bad for trying to get help.
I loved Dr. Kearley so much that I am currently writing my first ever review on here. I had him for Orgo 2 and even though the class is very difficult, he takes the time to make sure his students understand it. You have to put in the work though, this includes asking questions in class, doing homework, and going to office hours.
Smart guy but insanely difficult tests, got me bent. Don't care about no isopropyl alcohol, I'm just trynna go to med school
OFFICE HOURS. this class is v hard because it is Orgo 1 and 2 in one semester (aka 1 month for orgo 1). Tests are hard but if you understand the concepts & not just memorize the HW you will get at least a B- on the tests. know synthesis. I almost had a panic attack during the final but this is way better than the $ and time spent on 1 yr of orgo
His lectures are amazing. He is very help in office hours and will make sure you answer your own questions. There are a lot of homework problem, and you have to do them more than twice if you want an A in this class. Tests are very similar to HW, but tricky. This class is very time consuming, but going to lecture will help a ton.
Dont get me wrong. Class is hard. Be ready to sit in office hours. But do the homework 3x and put in the effort and youll get an A.
Class is hard! But if you go to office hours and do the homework you can pass. Great guy and amazing prof.
Best way to summarize Biochem this far: He teaches you to walk an inch and expects you to run a mile...
Last semester I took Orgo 2 and failed the class. This semester with Dr. Kearly I was able to exceed my expectations. He is the only professor I've had in organic chemistry that I would leave lecture feeling like I have learned something. Go to the office hours and do the homework multiple times he wants you to succeed you just have to do the work
THE ONLY PROFESSOR YOU SHOULD EVER THINK ABOUT TAKING!!! wouldn't recommend any other chemistry professor
In my 22 years of living, Ive never had a teacher belittle me as much as this man has. Every time I go to office hours he does nothing but talk down on me, yell at me, and makes me feel stupid for getting help. Ive left his office feeling so embarrassed and ready to give up on the class. I wish I dropper the course When He wouldnt help.
Dr. Kearley is the most dedicated and caring professor I have ever had at FSU. He makes an effort to get to know his students and truly wants them to succeed. He holds office hours daily and helps his students all day. If you really want to learn organic chemistry, take Kearley!
Dr Kearley is nice and clearly cares about his students. He knew quite a few by name and has an absurd number of office hours. His lecture notes show what he wants you to know and he brings in real world examples of concepts to aid in your understanding. Im glad I took him over some other BioChem professors, but be ready to pull from Orgo.
Dr. Kearley cares about his students and does everything he can to help each student. He holds office hours almost 24/7. If you are willing to put in the work he will get you where you want to be in the class.
This teacher is the worst! Terrible human being! Does not teach the material that he tests you on. Run and run fast! Biochem is not easy to begin w and he doesn't teach you anything he tests you on. No book, lectures but not on material on test. Even though he says it is. May get a C if u go to office hrs and put Lips to B holes.
If you want to succeed in his class, recommend going to his office hrs at least 2 times a week. I'm usually an A student (3.9 GPA) but his class was very challenging. It is not impossible, but make you work for it. Homework is not mandatory but think of it as it is. If you don't do them at least 3 times, you will get 70 at most.
He is the best teacher. Biochem is not hard, but he made it tricky that it is harder than it needs to be. Everything on the exam is from the lecture and the hw, but he twist them so much that it is hard to tell what it is asking. Do the HW and GO to OFFICE hrs, Pay attention in LECTURE that is all you need. IF YOU DONT LIKE MATH, choose a BIO prof.
I'm a pretty decent student, get A's/B's mostly. Then I took this course with him TWICE for my grad requirements and he failed me both times. He has his favorites, he only cares about himself, his office hours are a waste of time, and he doesn't curve. He does not help students that are struggling and doesn't hold up his end to any agreement.
I have taken Kearley's gen chem 1 and orgo 2 courses. He's a nice guy, but I am not the best at chemistry and find his classes stress me out to the extreme. Some people are great at chem, but if you are not then Kearley might be very difficult to understand his method of teaching. Material and studying are DIY or you probably won't pass.
He seems very nice in class and jokes around with the students. Although, when it comes to office hours he's not like that. He's nice and helpful to his favorite students but when I asked him questions I felt as though he were annoyed. I had also asked him why something happens with DNA and instead of explaining he said, "Just memorize it."
Dr. Kearley is the best professor I have had at FSU. He has office hours any time he is not in class and I highly recommend that you go. Do the homework multiple times before tests and quizzes and you will be fine. After you get your tests back take it to office hours to go over it with him because he may give you points back that TAs took off.
This man honestly does not deserve to be teaching. Since he is a "distinguished professor", no one believes the students when they say Kearly bullies them, condescends them, and yells at them at office hours. This man doesn't deserve to be teaching a difficult course if he doesn't have the patience to help at office hours.
Save yourself the trouble and take someone else
Someone please report this professor. The efforts of several students have been failed. This man verbally aggressively attacks students all the time and nothing is done about it. He does not deserve to be teaching.
If I could rate him a ZERO I would. He doesn't help at office hours. He wants you to kiss his ass to pass his class. He rude and has no patience whatsoever. Save yourself the trouble and take someone else. I practically taught myself and barely passed
This class is really hard but this professor makes it even harder. Getting help from this professor is like pulling teeth. He barely explains anything and expects you to get it. He's so impatient and always make snarky remarks, suggesting that only a certain demographic of students should take his class because they're the ones who can pass. SMH
This prof is the reason that I'm now a year behind in my major because he made me feel like I wasn't capable of succeeding. I'll never forget going to office hours one morning and he told me "everyone knows that I go to the gym on this day, I'll be back in an hour" and I sat there for an hour waiting for him to return and help. Very inconsiderate!!
Definitely won't be easy, but Kearley provides you with all the resources necessary to do well. All his tests are based on his lectures so I'd recommend going to class. Several quizzes, but he tells you when they are and prepares you for them. Homework is optional, but helps A LOT on exams and quizzes!
Dr. Kearley is a true gem. Orgo was the one class I was truly dreading in my pre-med, but he made it manageable. I had him for CHM3217, and he had plenty of office hours, and other resources that made it easy to pass if you want to. You gotta work, and he can be quite sassy, but Kearley really does have your best interest in mind. He also curves!
Hes a really smart guy who really knows what hes doing. Trust him and do what he says and youll be ok. You will have to work your but so be ready.
The worst professor I've taken at FSU. Idk how this man has all these positive reviews but he's literally the most condescending, impatient and discriminatory professor I've ever taken. When I didn't understand the material, he belittled me at office hours and made me feel so stupid. Dealing with him was mentally defeating. I had heavy depression
He is a great person but orgo is hard so if he is your only option maybe try to find a different teacher next semester but if that's not an option just try your best. THIS IS A WEED OUT CLASS BE PREPARED TO PRACTICE EVERYDAY!
Kearley was the best professor I've had at FSU because he actually teaches you during lecture and only tests you on that material so it makes studying easier. If you re-watch lectures before a quiz or exam and just pay attention to what he emphasizes you'll get a good grade. He's also available almost every day in office hours.
This professor is the worst. Honestly I dont know why he still teaches. All he does is bully students during office hours and the school wont do anything about it
Kearley teaches very well I cant lie. However he is the most impatient professor ever. He quickly gets irritated if students do not understand the class material as quick as hed like. Students attend office hours only to get yelled at, belittled, and bullied by him. At least 4-5 students end up with mental health issues from his class
Kearley is a sweet guy and very accessible outside of class. He has his own way of teaching, will be impossible if you need structure. IMO, very hard to follow, and does not go over the basics. Expects you to have a lot of prior knowledge. Tests were very hard, TA said he even got some of the problems wrong + the questions intentionally trick you.
Kearley is one of the best organic chem professors at FSU. He is the gold standard if you want to learn. Ochem is tough, but as long as you do the homework, pay close attention to lecture and work hard you should be good. Really caring, if you go to his office hours and show effort to get better, he will ensure you pass.
I have no idea why his ratings are so high. This class is very difficult. His lectures do not adequately prepare you for his homeworks and quizzes/exams. Class feels unstructured. If you have a lot of free time, sure, go to OH 3-4 times a week and do homework all the time. If not, this class will really challenge you. He can also be rude.
The course is very difficult and makes you think critically, but Kearley really wants the best for his students and he is willing to help if you need it. Do everything he suggests to prepare for exams and you will be fine. He ensures that students are actually retaining the information so if you have to take Orgo 2 as well, I recommend taking him.
His rating should not be as high as it is, he is rude at times, and although he does know what hes talking about he teaches as though we should automatically know as well. His homeworks were significantly more difficult than the lectures, and his tests were even more difficult. At least he is somewhat generous in his curve.
This class is hard, but if you do kearley's homework and study everyday you will ace the course. I got 100's on multiple exams, granted I learned almost everything from my tutor, but if you're stuck get a tutor, watch OCT on youtube and visit his office hours. This class is easier than gen chem IMO. Goodluck! He also curves a lot. DO HOMEWORK
Whoever said "I got multiple 100s on tests" IT WAS NOT BECAUSE OF KEARLEY. The averages on exams were in the 50s/60s so don't be deceived. Congrats, you learned everything from your tutor. Kearley is not a great professor and should be avoided. You shouldn't have to do hw and go to Office Hours all the time to do well.
If you are taking orgo take it with kearley 100%! Exams are super straightforward and curves a lot. Got 100 on every exam this semester. Super nice and funny guy and homework mirrors the exams.
The tests were not easy, but as long as you do the optional homework youll be okay. Tests closely mimic the optional homework and the problems dont take that much time to complete. Everything covered on the tests will be covered in lecture, so make sure to go. Anyone with really awful experiences probably just didnt want to do the homework.
Hes not a bad professor but his curve def favored students. I got a higher grade than one student & the same grade as another student and they got curved a higher letter grade than me. Advice for class: DO THE HOMEWORK & UNDERSTAND IT. Theres various trick questions so make sure to ask lots of questions. Do not skip class.
This was the first class at FSU I was genuinely scared I was going to fail. His office hours werent that helpful and most of the time students would get yelled at. Would not recommend him for orgo 1
Attending OH is the key to this class. He curves based on effort and improvement in grades. His exams have trick questions, so make sure you know the content well. Make a practice exam for yourself to study and do the HW. Watch for tricks in the HW bc those tricks will be on the exam. He also emphasizes what will be on the exam in class.
Kearley's class was no joke. He is very knowledgable and genuinely enjoys teaching. However, to do well or pass in his class you NEED to devote your heart and soul into studying and doing homework. He welcomes students to his office all the time and really wants you to understand the material. His quizzes and exams are tough. Show that you care.
Dr. Kearley is an amazing professor. He is so passionate about organic chemistry as well as helping his students learn. He goes above and beyond to make sure his students succeed. The key to doing well in this course is simply listening to his advice- do all of the homework and do it on your own!
Dr. Kearley is a great person, when in his class he always made me laugh. It was during exams that I would cry and wish I never had taken the class. It's super difficult if you don't innately get organic chemistry. The material taught in class is 10x easier than the homework, quizzes, and exams so getting lost is common. I wouldn't take this class.
Kearley gets mixed reviews based on his teaching style and personality, but he genuinely wants you to do well. Go. To. Office. Hours. Walk into his office any day of the week and he will help you. He wants to see you put in the work. This class is hard and he knows that, so ask him questions if you are confused. Very important to do the homework!
You will not pass if you don't do the HW. His HW is hard. Exams are harder. However, I know orgo better than anyone else who hasn't taken him and taking his class has forever shifted my studying habits for the better. He does care about you but you have to give it your best effort. I think most people cry b/c this is their first real college class.
I cannot stand this professor. He is so mean for no reason. He has clear favorites that are on a first name basis with him and they hang out in his OHs. If you aren't a favorite, you get treated poorly. He interupts students needing help and makes you feel bad for not understanding. He obviously is knowledgeable. Lectures don't help w/ exam/quiz
As far as teaching style he is very much into mechanisms. He clearly picks favorites on a first name basics, go to OH and make friends with him. I felt like he never gave helpful answers & he was rude to students. There was not much help on the internet since he used his own terms & def. ie: "pancake flip" which the TA also couldn't describ.
Honestly just a terrible person. Would not give me the extra time I needed and has been incredibly rude to several students. His homework problems take roughly 20 minutes to do and there are roughly 40. Gives students the answers to homework the day before exams and doesn't tell you how to do the homework correctly in office hours. Don't recommend
Hes a great professor and so is his teaching style. His exams are literally the optional homework rewritten. However, there are students who clearly want an LOR. Its obvious to undergrads and maybe not so obvious to him. These ass-kissers will make you wait an hour to see him for OH. Thats what is annoying; its not him.
This is one of the worst classes Ive ever taken! He will start teaching but not name/label what kind of reaction it is. Or he will skip back and forth between topics and confuse you.
Dr.Kearley's expectations for this course are simple: attend lecture, complete the homework and go to office hours. That is how you succeed in this class. However, if you are weaker on organic chemistry I highly recommend you brush up on your knowledge or take another instructor.
Avoid if you can. Does not prepare you well for exams. Tests on extremely specific content not taught during class (such as structures). Does not tell you grade on Canvas. Lots of office hours but long waits for help. Has the same 10 favorite students that take up OHs from students in need. Exams graded harshly. Regret taking for Orgo1+Biochem.
Avoid if you can. Does not prepare you well for the tests, asks very specific questions not discussed in lectures, and has very limited office hours with long waits. Not accommodating, interrupts lectures to reprimand students on technology use, and delays posting HW answers. Ill-prepared for MCAT because he is extremely organic chemistry heavy.
Dr. K is an excellent professor who cares about his students and is passionate about teaching. He talesthe time to get to know the people who come to his office and is so sweet. Keep in mind when he is stressed, he gets a little irritable but don't take it personally. To do well, you MUST come to class, pay attention, and stay on top of HW.
Dr. Kearley is a great professor and kind-hearted. Make sure to go to his office hours! He offers a great way to break down the material and help you think logically. He does come off as intimidating at points, but he truly wants students to come up to him and ask questions. He loves talking with his students and getting to know them.
Dr. Kearley made Orgo 1 enjoyable and easy to understand, which can be a hard feat. He offers SO many outside resources and homework problems that directly mirror test questions. If you put in the work and ask for help (LAs!!), then you will succeed! Showing personal improvement is also a factor determining your final grade (having an A- over a B!)
Dr. Kearley is a great professor and his TAs/LAs were tons of help this semester. If I could give any tips, make friends in the class just in case you miss a lecture & need notes, attend office hours, and DO THE HOMEWORK!! The hw mimics the exam format & everything that is covered in the hw is what you need to know for the exam.
This class was not biochemistry, it was another round of organic chemistry. The exams consist of extremely specific conceptual questions not taught in lecture. He will not meet with you unless you can wait hours for his office hours and responds to emails days later. If you want to learn biochemistry, do not take Kearley.
this class made me change my major lol
Unless you go to his office hours twice a week and become his buddy you are not going to enjoy your time. Rude and bad teacher. Grade determined only by tests which he always tests the tricky components. Treats the class much more difficult than it needs to be, I urge you to take someone else.
Aced every single quiz, attended every lecture & discussion period while taking detailed notes, completed all the recommended homework.... Still could get above a 50% on the exams. Would not EVER take this professor again.
Before taking biochem with professor Kearley I was told that the best way to pass his class was to show up to his office hours. However, his office hours require a 2 hour wait to get a 10 minute chance to talk to him. He is rude, unhelpful, and only accommodating towards the students that have the time to become his buddy. Take someone else PLEASE
Kearley is amazing at providing extra help outside the classroom. His highest priority is his students, and it shows how he wants us to succeed. He provides beneficial homework and it is great practice for exams. One must be ready to work hard in this class within a timely manner. Doing the homework provides success.
I legitimately love Kearley. His class is hard, it's Orgo II it's gonna be hard. You have to put a lot of time into this class. I would recommend taking Kearley's class but don't take it alongside hard STEM class because this class needs to be your #1 priority if you want to pass it. He is a wonderful professor, but the content is simply difficult.
Horrible. Got a C in this class, i was student with a 4.0.
There were definitely some pros and cons to the class. He does give homework that reflects the tests and very good TAs and LAs. However he isn't very clear on grading and usually won't tell you what you missed, and office hours are very crowded and difficult to get into. I thought I had great improvements in the course and still ended with a C-.
I took Kearley for two semesters now, my best advice is to attend office hours as much as you can when you need help. It is a big commitment to go to him all the time, so make sure you have enough time in your schedule to do that. He is really pleasant when you talk to him outside of class though, and he loves learning the names of his students.
Lectures have zero correlation to homework and exams. Only 3 exams and 3 quizzes for grades. He does not curve. Gives homework problems but does not post the answers until the night before the exam/quiz. Avoid at all costs. I am a diligent student that has never failed a class and I had to withdraw halfway thru the semester. Do not take.
I LOVED taking kearley for combined organic chemistry. You have to be willing to put in the work and attend office hours, but it was so worth it and the best decision I could make. He cares for his students and wants everyone to succeed as long as they participate and show you are putting in the work.
Kearly seems like a great guy but he makes this class 10X worse than it needs to be. In lectures he teaches great but then his tests are way harder than any example on homework or notes. His office hours are inaccessible and he is very condescending in the chance you get in. I did everything I was supposed to and more and still had to withdraw.
Dr. Kearley is my favorite professor I have ever had. His class is not easy, but he gives you everything you need to succeed. If you put the work in, you will do fine. Going to his office hours helps a lot, he will help explain any questions you have. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
Dr. Kearly is a good guy if you get to know him but his class rewards only a particular type of student. You have to be at his office hours everyday, all day. He doesn't provide resources for the class outside HW that did not match the exams. You have to brownnose extremely hard to get an A. You will NOT achieve an A with your own study strategies!
hws just like exams, hw much harder than lecture. some formulas on hw/exam not taught in class. you'll pass if you understand hws but the understanding part is more inconvenient than it can be. exam avgs: 61, 67, 65 oddly orgo-inspired for gen chem near end. guess it prepares you for orgo? do the hws on time & youll def pass!
He likes to get to know his students and I can't say he's a bad person but I would strongly suggest taking a different professor for Orgo. I didn't listen to the rumors about him and figured they were just poor students. Orgo is challenging, but he is the kind of professor who makes it a nightmare when it doesn't need to be.
He doesn't set you up for success. Not to succeed in the class, not for the MCAT, not to be a chemist. Terrible teaching strategy and incredibly stubborn to change anything about it (barring the typical student whining)
I tried every single study strategy recommended in order to pass his class and attended every single class, and I still failed. For some students, he is a kind and approachable professor. For others (most of students), he is very rude. There are many other professors that can make your experience taking this class way more manageable and peaceful.
The only way to succeed in this course with Kearley is to go to his office hours and become his "friend." If you do not have time extra time to do this, it will severely affect your grade. Take this professor if you're willing to put in the effort to go to office hours daily, if not, I recommend not taking him.
Dr. Kearley is not a bad person but his class is run very very poorly. If you do not frequent his office hours and become a favorite of his you will most likely struggle in this class. I was able to be very successful in organic 1 with a difficult professor but struggled terribly with Kearley. Unfortunate.
Dr. Kearley is an amazing professor! His teaching style is very clear and he teaches at a very good pace. He is always available to help and really wants you to understand the material. However, this class was the hardest class I have ever taken. Exams are absolutely brutal, no matter how much you study. Of the options, Kearly is your best bet.
Dr. Kearley was one of the best professors I've had at FSU thus far. Although the class is very challenging, it will prepare you for future chemistry classes. Do the homework, several times, and go to his office hours and make him know you, it will benefit you in the future. He has favorites, be one of them.
Kearley was one of the worst professors I've had at FSU. Unless you were one of his two favorites that had time to kiss his ass, good luck. Taught things that other gen chem classes didn't and had orgo questions he never went over in class on exams. As someone who doesn't even need the class for my major, I would not recommend.
Dr. Kearley is a great professor. He accessible nearly every day in his office and is always prepared to answer questions. That being said, he is not going to be easy on you. He will guide you in the right direction, but he wants you to figure it out on your own. This was the hardest class I've ever taken, but with good habits it is very doable.
he is so terrible I've never been more stressed for tests and quizzes. He teaches as though you already have a chemistry background and makes his tests unnecessarily hard. they are harder than his homework problems that he claims prepares you. only good thing is he does round a lot. I should have ended with a 63% and my final grade was a C-
Easily one of the most challenging classes I have taken. The homework is difficult to do using lecture notes. The tests are 10 times harder than both the lecture and HW combined. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!! If you approach him with a "wanting to improve" attitude, he will help you. Get ready to dedicate HOURS of your free time to him though.
Horrific. Lectures all over the place. Only way to get help is wait an hour for office hours just for him to scoff at your question and rudely dismiss you yet he will also disapprove of you receiving outside help such as tutoring because if it didn't come from him it's wrong. Grades disabled throughout semester so no way to tell your grade. Avoid.
I had him for Orgo 2, i went to OH everyday like he suggested and still failed his class despite being a good student. Homework is nothing like the exam. He has favorites and doesn't curve accurately. His exams are based to challenge his honors students which are only 5% of the class. Take anyone else.
beware, if you are someone that doesn't normally attend office hours, you have to start. That is the ONLY way to pass this class, by becoming "friends" with him. He needs to know your name in order for you to do good in this class. H.W. is never due but is the only way you can practice anything. But the tests are way harder than the H.W.
Dr. Kearley's lectures are essential for success in the class, as the concepts covered are frequently tested. His office hours provide an excellent opportunity to review homework problems and clarify difficult topics. Overall, Dr. Kearley is not as bad as everyone makes it seem just do the HW and go to class.
Even though he doesn't take attendance you need to attend every single lecture. I only missed 2 the whole semester and felt so behind even though I would get the notes from other people it's just not the same. Just practice your notes every day and it is most important not to cram for this class.
The class had 7 Grades tall Exams and Quizzes. Homework is optional, and he flat out tells LAs and TAs not to help students with the homework (andhe doesn't post the answers on canvas until the night before the exams.) Coming from someone who got a 3 on AP Chem exam, save the time and money and take Dillon or Chem 1 at TCC. He doesnt care about u.
I took him for combined Orgo and this was a very difficult class. I had to frequent his office hours to be able to succeed. If you go to his office hours and make the effort he does care and try to help you the best he can. He's also a phenomenal lecturer and the material always made sense when he explained. He even gave me a fist bump once.
This class was so terrible. I spent hours and hours studying for his exams and still did not pass. Don't take him if you can't make it to his office hours and become his best friend. Prepare for him to be rude to you if you don't understand a concept that wasn't covered in class.
Prof Kearly seems like a nice guy but his class was way harder than it should have been. I know multiple people that dropped or failed this course due to the layout of this class. The only way to succeed in this class is if you make it to every office hour in the week which is impossible if you have anything to do outside of this class.
One of my favorite professors at FSU. He can be a little rude at times but he does a great job teaching the material. Only graded on quizzes/exams but the questions come straight from the optional homework so make sure you do all of it and actually understand it. He absolutely HATES cell phones during class and will call you out if he sees you.
Lectures were a review instead of lesson, the only students I meet that had a relative understanding of the class were those who had taken AP chem in high school. I paid for a tutor in an attempt to pass the class and she told me the work he gave contained many chem 2 questions. Tests were incredibly hard and felt nearly impossible to pass.
Exams are difficult and he's not helpful whatsoever, he also hates when students go to tutoring and only wants people to do problems his way.
Nice man, NOT a good teacher. His method relies on students guessing the answers and not being told if they are doing anything right. You must teach yourself. Accessible outside of class but he doesn't do many problems similar to the tests during lectures. Do the HW. His office is packed and it's hard to get direct help or answers from him.
Nice guy and he's very charismatic, but holyyyy he's soo bad at teaching. He briefly goes over things in lectures only gives you a set of practice problems to do at home and even if you go to tutoring or office hours it wont help. tutors were stumped and office hours he didn't help. Overall everyone felt extremely demoralized that I met.
Does not give you the resources to succeed
He doesn't give you the answers to hw problems, and will not help you out.
If you want to take a class and not struggle to understand the material by yourself, don't take him
This is the worst orgo teacher I've had, do not take him
I usually hate this take, but honestly Orgo is just a hard class, there's no way around that. Dr. Kearly himself is a good and clear lecturer, I was always able to follow along and understand what he was saying, so it could've been worse. Exams are really tough, you have to make sure you're an expert in it to get an A. Not fun, but overall okay.
Be lucky he's retiring this semester
Terrible professor. He is super inconsiderate and harsh. He would literally release the HW answers (the only study material) 1-2 days before the test. His excuse was that he wanted students to come to office hours. I think he just wanted his ego stroked.
I took this professor for Combined Orgo 1 and 2 and Biochemistry, these classes were both extremely difficult however I found his lectures inspiring and made me actually like chemistry. If you show up to office hours, he will see that you are dedicated and also studying with other students helped me for both courses. Spend a lot of time reviewing.
He simplified his lectures when taking general chem 1 and 2. I got a basic gist of the material during the lectures, and I did the homework in the book to get the full picture. He was the most difficult professor to take when I was at FSU, but it was worth it. Keeping in mind all of the classes I have taken, his lectures were the most outstanding.
Orgo is tough, no doubt. The professor can be hit or miss, but if you stay on top of the work and use resources like unstuckstudy ai, you can make it through. The exams are brutal, so you really have to know your stuff. Overall, it's a challenging class, but manageable if you put in the effort.
Took him for both Orgo 1 & 2. You HAVE to put in extra effort to do well in this class. I would regularly go to his office hours, re-do the homework problems, and make extra study material to understand the material. He has amazing lectures and actually wants his students to learn and critically think on their own. I'm glad I took him!!
