clarity of explanation is crystal; quality of delivery is powerful
phenomenal speaker and highly intelligent, but cares little about students
No Comments
Not clear on class expectations. Just babbles. It's like kindergarten story time
he's smart and sexy
an entertaining lecturer, not clear on course expectations, not very friendly
My favorite course, because the prof is ridiculusly good.
Kingwell is the best prof. i've ever had and his class absolutely amazing.
Entertaining, but overall direction of course being taught is not quite clear.
Sooo arrogant! Sooo sexy! Can't decide if I love him or hate him.
really intimidating but smart...and DAMN fine
Obscenely interesting prof. why is he teaching 1st and 2nd year courses? so
Interesting thoughts, extremely intelligent. Makes everyone laugh atleast once!
arrogant maybe but is forgiven b/c he is emphatically the most perfect man alive
kingwell is mr. perfect - smart, snappy dresser, and sexy as hell
No Comments
Overrated. Hypocrite. Course material ok, prof personally offensive.
entertaining, lectures usually excellent but has stronger understanding of some topics than others, and spends little time preparing for some lectures; a bit condescending in conversation because of his inflated ego but easy to talk down if complemented
Intelligent, arrogant and damn good-looking. Woo-hoo!
smart,insightful,quirky,passionate,funny,great hair...just yummy!
very little interest in students' work due to seeming self-involvement; very bright, but needs to look outward to get the big picture...
who can resist the combination of the jag/caviar/adbusters/arrogance/and just damn fine? ok, so i was scared to speak up on class because i didn't want to bring his hotliness's scorn upon me...but at least i never missed a lecture!
funny, well dressed, intelligent, and yes, a little egotistic, but personally i think it goes well with the rest of the package! lectures are always interesting and overall, quite a great course!
Witty. Not very available or approchable, but know his stuff down cold. Can be an egotist/elitist, but only to people who are mistaken about logic or content or conclusion of an argument. Doesn't make you write long essays on tests, a big plus.

HOT!HOT! Extremily intelligent, very rich vocabulary, knows his stuff inside out; don't try to stump him or sound smart in class: he always wins. Did I mention he is sexy? Overall great course, one of the best profs I've ever had.
Possibly the most badass man I've ever met.
knows his ****, tests weren' too hard. But I wouldn't be surprised if he has his lectures taped so he can watch himself later. Biggest ego I've ever encountered at university
it is true he is good looking, and has a bit of an ego, but it is understandable because he is a genius and the best lecturer i have ever had.
I liked Kingwell's intro class so much I sat in on his aesthetics class for fun. Plus he's hot. I approached him many times but he always managed to keep his pants on despite my jedi mind trick. It only works on the weak minded.
seems friendly and helpful from the back of the classroom, but in person, he is rude, distant and completely unhelpful. recently handed back his aesthetics papers (marked by himself)feedback-free.
very unapproachable. shouldn't he re-examine what teaching is all about. you're not supposed to be masturbating, mark, you're supposed to be teaching. Sure, he knows his stuff, but the best teachers are not those who shut you down when you seek guidanc
hot, but the illusion has been shattered. i went to him for help and felt like i was bothering him.
Genius. He is to philosophy what Kenny G is to jazz. And hotter than a spark in a flint mine. Hallowed be thy name.
The man is a genius. (And yes the rumours are true; he is completely HOT in every way). His dislike of undergrads, however, borders on contempt. One of the best courses I have EVER taken at University of Toronto. Highly reccomended.
amazing, witty, exciting lecturer. He's definitely good at seducing people to get interested in philosophy. I personally haven't gotten up to him for help, so i can't comment on the so called "distant" persona when approaching him personally

Great lectures. This man is brilliant. I've never gone to him for help, but everytime I've talked to him he's been very friendly. Long live the Kingwell.
Brilliant and ridiculously good looking. Take a course with him if you have the chance, one of the best profs at U of T.
A highly knowledgable, articulate and engaging professor with lots of ideas and well-organized lectures. But he can be quite standoffish in person, and emits an air of self-importance. Very good-looking, especially for someone of his age.
He can make you laugh and ponder all while passing off 3 hours as 1. He is not unapproachable if you see him during his given office hours and come to him with organized questions; a brillant busy man does not have time for banter.
A filthy genius, but one of the most arrogant human beings I've ever encountered. I mean really, who reads from their own book during a lecture? I wouldn't even think of going to him for help for fear of being horribly belittled.
Mark Kingwell: Metrosexual posterboy, philosophy prof extraordinaire. Everyone should take this course.
He used one of his own quotes as an essay question on the final exam, right up there with Hume, Kant, and Camus. I laughed out loud when I saw that. Sure he's a genius, but he really should tone down the pomposity if he is to be a truly great prof.
This guy is over-hyped and so yesterday's news. Not recommended.
Over-hyped, self promoted, and a little too old for anyone in class.
students don't matter to this guy, he's so focused on his own glory that he basically uses the university as an easy pay check
Although he has a pompous demeanour, this professor has an excellent & thorough knowledge of course material. Don't let his pretentiousness fool you. He's Very eloquent and extremely clear. Course is difficult, but he does a very good job teaching.

Great sense of humour to keep the class awake. Has the ability to explain concepts well. Unfortunately, his messy writing (which nobody but himself can read) is frustrating the hell out of me. He should learn how to write English letters properly.
Rude, self centered and not as funny as he thinks he is. Not recommended.

Kingwell's a great prof. A lot of work is assigned but Kingwell does a good job explaining the material and making the lectures interesting.
Prof. Kingwell gives incredible lectures. His oratories are outstanding, and he knows it. Negative remarks here probably come from guys who wish they were similarly whitted and suave. He may be pretentious, but I don't think any more than a man as distinguished as him could be blamed for being.

In depth analysis of work. Great sense of humour that he brings to enlighten the class. He does an amazing job of explaining all the text provided in the course, although there are many.

Prof. Kingwell has ignited my desire for philosophy. His lectures are nothing short of amazing; his energy, his stories, his humour. I want to MAJ in philo now because of this class. I hope I get a class of his next year.
Engaging story teller, and hard working professor. Should avoid flirting with students in and outside of lecture, it is no wonder everyone wants to MAJ in philosophy.
Tonnes of material but not enough discussion since half the classes were dedicated to movies. (good movies though!) For me, Kingwell had an irritating, get under the skin effect. He drove me crazy! But the books were really good and the critical literature and his lectures were interesting.
I thought i liked philosophy until I realized how useless it really was. I just think that alot of it is fluff. Instead of professing and writing about how to make the world a more just place, why not go out and get politically active and volunteer in social justice events.
Um...what's he talking about? His original ideas were provoking and clearly explained. But listening to his take on our readings was confusing and difficult to follow. The guy has interesting friends that he brought in as guest lecturers; best part of the course for sure.
One of the most intteligent and witty professors you will ever meet. Speaks to the crowd as though he is educating a room of his peers. I would recomend any course he teaches
Not recommended
Sexy and Seductive. He lures you into philosophy. Most engaging speaker and intellectual. TAKE HIS CLASS if you get the chance
self-serving,aloof, inaccessible and too vested in his own grooviness. will give him credit for promoting love of learning and questioning in a rigourous fashion. agree with other comment - can argue about life up to a point then you just need to get active and DO something!
After three courses, you begin to see the Kingwell repeat himself and tell the same old jokes. If you're a first year, it all sounds so seductive, but if you've heard him speak before, this is nothing new.
Over-rated and self-promoting. Should avoid talking so negatively about Americans, we are not in a politics course.
Excellent enthusiasm. I found his teaching style and material (meanderings)too advanced for a first year course. I would suggest that he stick to basics as even the basics are challenging. Too much is lost if a student gets lost in the 'clutter'.
Kingwell is a very popular professor and a topic of gossip. He lures with his wit and charming personality. He has left a dominant philosophical impression. Philosophy may be useless but Kingwell's constant irony makes that claim unstable.
Not funny.
I'd like to see him quit the academy and stick to public intellectualism, qua John Ralston Saul. Not that I have a problem with rockstar personas in philosophy departments--he just isn't doing philosophy, that's all. If you choose courses based on the prof's looks, though, you'd be wrong not to take a course with him. (This, from a straight guy.)
Very arrogant but it somehow makes the material more interesting. And so hot.
If one is to base their rating solely on his so-called good looks (which too many students seem to do), you end up with a professor with an over-blown ego, and hardly an academic.
Self-contradictory in his views, but knows his material.
kingwell is great. he is passionate, he's interesting, clear, concise, engaging. take this class.
Great Professor who knows his stuff - very energetic and funny, but PLEASE, THIS IS NOT A POLITICS COURSE, KEEP YOUR ANTI AMERICAN VIEWS TO YOURSELF - once is fine, twice is ok, three is pushing it, but almost every single class is just ridiculous...
Engaging, charismatic lecturer who uses vivid examples, is open to questions and discussion (but seeks/demands clarity in questions, which might explain why he comes off as conceited to many). Concepts presented in lectures sometimes seemed too broad or dumbed-down, but this is to be expected in a 1st year course open to non-philosophy majors.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Him!... but besides the good looks he confused the hell out of me. Class was very interesting however, well the stuff i got anyway. He was hilarious which made class easier to attend. Frankly, it's the only class i attended on a regular basis all year. HArd though... My T.A was really creepy too.
One of the best classes I've taken.
Not THAT funny, not very attractive and confusing. I recommend philosphy, but not with Kingwell.
His class was always interesting, and I enjoyed his lecturing methods, but on the other hand, the exam was killer, and the preperation we were given wasn't very helpful.
Over-rated and creepy.
new to the class, but enjoying it so far. nice to look at while i am trying to figure out what he says.
He is a good speaker, but his lectures tend to deviate from the core subject. This would be fine, except he tests you on these red herrings (bowtie!). Its obvious he wants the student to form a intuitive understanding of Philosophy, where concepts can be drawn from a base of knowledge and juxtaposed with one another . Solid Class.
Kingwell was awesome to listen to, and he is brilliant. His tangents, suprisingly, helped me understand the course material. The exam was ridiculous, and Kingwell made no attempt to prepare us for it.
Kingwell likes to get off topic in almost every lecture. Enjoys listening to himself speak more than hearing out new students. Not highly recommended.
To set the record straight - Kingwell IS very approachable. I emailed him many times to clarify concepts he sent flying over my head. He responded helpfully and extremely fast. He IS charismatic, he DOES tend to take things outside the realm of the syllabus, and he DOES have high expectations - we're adults afterall. Let's grow up.
He's not very well informed about certain areas of philosophy. As a result, some of what you learn in the intro. course is very misleading. He's not boring, he's famous, he knows some interesting people, but he's not a good teacher at this level. Even so, I would recommend the course to those who have no previous knowledge of philosophy.
Not highly recommended
He is an entertaining lecturer but his midterm is extremely unfair. Don't spend too much time copying overhead diagrams, that is a waste of time. Take notes on what he is SAYING - that's what you'll be tested on. Not the best prof the philosophy department but all right. Not sure why everyone thinks he's hot...he is charismatic though.
not half as insightful as he believes himself to be.
wonderful prof, very witty and cute. Be sure to pay attention to what he says and the examples he gives to explain a concept.
Kingwell is a reasonably acceptable professor at best. He is enthusiastic about the material, but does not always organise it well or teach it effectively. His exams test your memory for odd things mentioned in class. TAKE NOTES ON WHAT HE SAYS. The readings are almost completely irrelevant on tests. Pay attention to the EXACT terms he uses.
He's very enthusiastic about the course material, but doesn't usually explain the concepts well. He's pretty disorganized, constantly flipping back and forth between overhead sheets. The exams are completely based on the lectures, much of the readings are completely unnecessary.
He is so charasmatic! Philosphy is interesting to listen to in general, but he could be talking about organic chemistry (no offense) and students would hang on to his every word! Maybe it has something to do with his being absolutely and completely gorgeous. Oh those baby blues twinkling in the projector lights...
Very Arrogant, but I would highly recommend taking a class with him! An excellent lecturer who draws you into the subject matter and puts together a well prepared and thought provoking course.
The most difficult and most rewarding class as a 1st-year humanities student. More information in a 1 hr lecture than a month's worth of lectures in most humanities courses. Forces you to really think both creatively and rigourously but in such a way that if you keep up, you'll be eager to do it. Be sure to check old exams. Brilliant course!
He is an excellent professor. He makes most of the classes somewhat interesting and seems passionate about the course material. Pay attention to his methods for remembering the philosophers-he'll ask you about his own schemes and inventions.
The class was absolutely amazing. Kingwell does a good job keeping the class illuminating, interesting and enjoyable. The exam is more about his lectures rather than the course material itself. He doesn't limit himself to the philosophers in the syllabus but mentions other thinkers as well (which may be irrelevant at times). Definitely recommended.
Great speaker, overrated professor. He's renowned for his ego. Trouble focussing. That all said, take his courses.
speaks clearly and invoke interest in audience in any topic he mentions, but expects alot in return, and materials covered in tests could be anything making it impossible to study...

To complete ur UT experience, u have to take Kingwell's class at least once or hear him speak. He knows he is a genius, good looking, rebellious and his tattoo proves all of the above. Inspirational and breathtaking, cynical yet funny, egotistical and arrogant. But WHO CARES! He is HOT and sadly, married. You can't help but be in awe of him.

Professor Kingwell is a great lecturer. His classes are entertaining which in turn makes course material easier to retain. He is very fair and provides a lot of resources for students to seek extra help (writing labs, T.A's). I am not sure if he's approachable; never tried to talk to him. Great class, highly recommended. Oh ya, he's pretty cute too
totally approachable. moreso than most at u of t. his reputation precedes him, though, which may be an intimidating factor. very clear and entertaining lecturing style.
great
Fantastic professor. Entertaining, very interesting. Jumps around a bit which is a problem for some, but uses visual aids. If you're interested, it's easy to follow along. Many opportunities for class participation. Gets on tangents sometimes, but no harm done as he's extremely articulate and covers appropriate material. Excellent review session!
i dont like how he tries to brainwash non-philosophy students who don't know any better by making claims as if theyre definitive when in fact theyre very debatable. dont like his 'popular philosophy' style. also people say he's good looking but if you see him up close he actually looks a bit like a monster.
Intimidating in his genious? How's that? A little over the top? I read his drinks book before his philosophical work and was impressed by both.
hot....lol. great teacher- only had him for a semester and he was great.
Cool professor.
cool prof ... loves to use puppets
overcomplicated and confusing terms to explain very simple ideas. The classes themselves were pretty hard to follow at times, the prof uses specific examples in class that are important for the exam...so most make sure you go to class!! The TA was almost entirely useless, which was a waste of an hour every week.
It was ok.
I was expecting the class to be difficult and the material even more difficult to understand but I was pleasantly surprised. I loved how the prof. explained concepts using examples and good details and overall I found the course to be VERY EASY. Just stay on top of your readings, attend lectures, go to tutorials, and there is no reason why one c
Ready and willing for questions in and out of class. Personally rather intimidating, and tries to be hip with the kids in lectures, both of which can be offputting. Lectures are enjoyable and informative, excellent at drawing out central concepts from texts and making them clear. Sparse overhead notes not enough to copy down, but work with his talk
AMAZING prof, especially for this course. He's brilliant, funny, and cool. The book choices were amazing and the Philosophical viewpoint invaluable. Also, he's really cute!
AMAZING.
One of the best professors at U of T.
My favourite professor in my first year. Lecture attendance mandatory, philosophical readings are directly complimentary. Very easy course if you show up to lecture, focus exclusively on lecture material when studying, you will pass with flying colours. Love the intro music.
Kingwell is an incredibly witty and intelligent philosopher. The course material itself is quite easy--this is mainly due Kingwell's ability to simplify complex philosophical ideas in a way that is both illuminating and entertaining. Take this course.
thoroughly enlightening, I could sit and listen all day, too bad we only get 2 hours/week. Give us more, MORE philosophy!
This man is BRILLIANT. Easily my favourite lecture. Learned way more than I thought I would.
if you haven't taken philosophy before, i do not recommend this class. kingwell is a good lecturer and is lively and throws in a couple jokes here and there to keep the class awake. the material itself is challanging, but not extremely hard. and he's cute!
This class and this prof are the reasons why I majored in philosophy. I'm now in my 3rd year and having taken this class in my 1st year I can still easily say this was the best class I ever took. The material is difficult, but if you're into it it will work. Kingwell is brilliant and if you pay attention is quite clear. Amazing class, amazing prof!
Kingwell was dope. He's got class and finesse ? he doesn't lecture, he performs. I understand he's very sought after, both in the university and in broader academia. Couldn't recommend him more highly.
Fantastic! I love him, I love him, I love him. One of my role models.
I completely agree with what a previous commenter posted: he is crystal clear if you pay good attention to what he is saying. What he says is not only clear but very, very insightful for someone just stepping into philosophy!
It was okay I guess... not a huge fan, especially with a 6-8 page essay + review that had to be written within a week...
Very little relevance between assigned readings and lectures. Made his own book mandatory reading and then did not discuss it all. Can be an engaging lecturer, although seems uninterested most of the time.
Kingwell is very insightful if you really pay attention. His class can get really boring though. He also doesn't use powerpoints so you better make sure you attend every class and take good notes! The guest speakers were the highlight of this course. The essays were difficult and so was the grading. Overall an enlightening experience in aesthetics.
The lectures are superficial.
HOT, KOOL, 1ST KLASS GUY, MAKES U THINK, BEST EVR!!!!
Would take again, and again, and again.
Clear lectures, but not thorough. That is, he did not cover works extensively, but instead, gave overall pictures. I managed to end the course with an 87, but the final examination seemed like it was recycling questions from his Aesthetics exam. Some concepts were only mentioned in passing, but still appeared on the exam. Great lecturer though.
Kingwell's lectures were engaging. However, this "survey" course ended up being too crowded, and as a result, became superficial (most of the information we learned could've been learned by going on wikipedia). That was a shame, as Professor Kingwell is probably one of the most knowledgeable people on the subject. He tried to do too much.
Keeps your attention, good sense of humor, casual
Kingwell is very passionate about the material he teaches and it shows in his lectures and the way he presents the material. He makes sure to distinguish between his own interpretation of the material, what the philosopher may have intended, and what others have said to avoid bias. His lectures are funny and he is very approachable.
Made TA's hate him so much in the first month that they went on work to rule. Came under review for having too much material in the course so he had to change the syllabus - because of this he made a lot of readings "optional", but relied on them heavily (so, they weren't really optional). Insanely hard. Impossible to follow along. Don't do it.
His exam was so bizarre! He told us what he'll test us on mostly, but included maybe 2 terms and 8 other terms that we barely/never discussed in class. There's a lot of reading to do (finish one PHL book every week). Also, the TAs were not helpful at all bc the TAs and Kingwell fought (?), but this wasn't even clarified in class.
His knowledge on literature is endless. Seriously. I bet you could name any novel and he will know exactly what you are talking about, plus a full biography of the author. Brilliant prof, and he makes classes beyond entertaining. I looked forward to the seminar every week. You MUST read the books assigned BUT they were unfailingly enjoyable!
You get a lot out of his class, but only if you do the readings (and the readings are substantial - a (short?) novel per week). And it's absolutely worth it. Assignments are also super fun, though you do need to put in the work!
super cool, 217 had lots of reading but Kingwell brought it altogether so well, like a KING, welllllllll, anywayyyyyys, take it
A good talker. But as a prof. He is limited. Should be sent off like a monastic scribe to read and research. Thats what hes best at. Be ready for exam that has 8 percent to do with what he actually babbles about. Avoid. Not worth it as an undergrad prof.
Was one of the worst classes I've taken because of the prof. After attending the lectures figured out that he wasn't a good lecturer ( and talks about himself way to much). The one thing that bothered me the most is that he didn't give marks in percentage (he just marks it as A or B), which made it difficult to know what the final mark is gonna be
Clearly explains concepts, picks great material for reading/watching, funny and insightful lectures. None of the assignments were based on memorizing specific stuff from the class but using what we learned to develop your own approach. Tough grader, but worth it if you care about becoming a better philosopher/writer.
Challenging but rewarding class. Professor picks great materials and delivers insightful lectures. Assignments focus on applying course concepts, not just memorization. Tough grader, but worth it for philosophers/writers. Found Unstuck ai helpful for study prep.
So full of himself I never want to read his writing ever again. It is so pretentious I had to look up several words that could have been omitted if not reworded in a more comprehensive way. I swear he writes like this on purpose to sound smart but it just makes it difficult to understand.
Fine professor, had fairly good insights into the course material. Otherwise, I really would not recommend this course. Lots of reading (one book a week), and required reflection papers every week. The final grade is only evaluated by two papers, one of which is a piece of creative writing. Harsh marker with not much feedback to provide.
