Very unhelpful when approached for assistance.
Most unhelpful instructor. Barely available with his office hours. Office hours spent drinking coffee in the teachers' lounge. Returns corrected papers long after exams, so you have no feedback on how you are doing until it's too late. Pick ANY other chem teacher than this one.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. I enjoy that he made me work hard for my grade and didn't hold my hand along the way. He was very helpful and taking labs with him fun. Work hard, but remeber that his personality makes up for the challenging course.
Hard. I think that is just the materal though. He is a good teacher. => Doesn't give you the answers. Makes you think of them. This kinda seems like he is unhelpful. Might find him during his office hours. Makes class interesting (in a positive way).
Mark Kontulis is so damn hard. He is not helpful at all. We paid him to teach us, rather he expects you to know the answer. THE WORSE TEACHER EVER! Switched college because of him. EVCC doesnt have enough chemistry teacher. He makes chemistry hard, however, it's going great for me now with a different teacher.

It feels like his lectures are a little rough, but they're organized. He does have a temper and can be difficult. I found him to be helpful if you talked to him one-on-one. Be sure to study hard!He gives long, complex problems on tests and quizzes. Though he is hard and the lectures rough,I feel I learned a lot because I had to put in extra effort.
Terrible teacher! I tried to make an appointment to meet with him for extra help and he wouldn't return my calls. His lectures are useless because he just expects you to know everything. Plan on reading the book and teaching yourself everything. Dropped his class and got an A from another teacher. He is just bad!
He makes his classes interesting and he like to joke around a lot. He pretty much expects that you're a big boy or girl and so you can find answers for yourself, which is why he may seem like an insensitive and useless teacher, but he does spend a lot of time practicing problems that are exactly how they appear on his exams.

At times I felt his lectures were confusing. Does expect students to be responsible for own learning, for sure. Really pretty nice (nicer than my last chem teacher). How is it that no one has rated this guy as hot? Weird...
Good teacher. The content ofthe class is difficult and moves at a very fast pace, but he does a good job of explaining the material and offers a question and answer session for extra help. Don't take him if you need your hand to be held!
Not a good teacher. I don't recommend taking him. Not clear in his directions and exams are big bummers.
Big fan of the Socratic method of teaching, which can be frustrating when you HAVE thought everything through and now need new information. Sense of humor can be hard to gauge sometimes so it is easy to misunderstand him, but ultimately he is fair and WANTS you to succeed.
He has outrageous outbursts which make it hard to concentrate because you're waiting for him to yell again, because he will remain moody&sarcastic.Extreme mood flux.He constantly demeans the classes' mentality, then individual students when they're brave enough to raise their hands. His tests were fair, but I couldn't ever approach him.Too rude.
In my opinion Mark is a very good instructor! I had to retake chemistry and ended up passing Marks class! Mark gives extra credit which is very helpful and wants to see his students succeed! He knows his chem and teaches it very well!
Mark is a great teacher! He welcomes questions during lecture and makes sure you "get it". The labs are really fun. You get your test and homework back right away so you know where you're at in the class. If you work really hard you will earn that A.
I thought he was a good teacher. Pretty helpful and made things easy to understand. He sometimes got frustrated when people asked stupid questions but who wouldn't?
Pretty good teacher. Some people just don't understand his sense of humor. He can be sarcastic a lot. But other than that I thought he answered questions well, and was a good teacher.
I LOVE Mark Kontulis! I drowned in my first chemistry class with a different professor and ended up dropping it. I'm soaring through Mark's class! He is an amazing teacher, fun, kind, funny, and teaches at a perfect pace so students will follow and understand. He explains everything so clearly and LOVES helping students! His class is SO much fun!!!
Mark makes you feel stupid when you ask a question and is easy to anger. He get's defensive when a student misunderstands something. Tests very hard. Jumps around with in a chapter, making it hard to follow along in the book. Grades labs far more harsh than other professors. Expects more from the students than he is willing to give as a teacher.
Mark is a very difficult teacher to work with. He has a personality that is a little entertaining but he makes it intimidating to ask questions. He tests are a lot harder than he thinks and what he teaches is not really what is on the test for the most part. He is not very or out of class and gets irritated easily.
Mark is a good teacher. He expects that you will do you work and not ask ridiculous questions. He does joke around a lot and sometimes is hard to figure out. The exams are hard, but fair.
Mark is a very difficult teacher to learn from. Although he is brilliant he is condescending and rude. He will not answer your question if he does not feel it is intelligently stated. His quizzes are straight-forward but his tests are not. I did well in his class but only because I put in the time. E-mail is the easiest way to communicate with him
Some of the comments make me laugh. Mark is a GREAT teacher, but is you need hand holding go somewhere else. He treats you like an adult. His exams are really hard, but EXACTLY like what he practices in class and on worksheets.
Mark was a great teacher. He expects his students to be adults, and treats them as such. He won't answer some questions though, if he knows that the answers are plainly stated in the book (ie. if knows you haven't even bothered to glance at the chapter. His tests are hard, but are exactly like his practice questions.
heard about comments he made to other students, which were demeaning and non-productive. Plays favorites but an ok instructor...,
SUPER HARD! His tests are really difficult and he is overall not a good teacher. He moves really fast and is super confusing. I did not learn anything from class but from the book. don't recomend
He is hilarious. Really HARD tests, but if you do the practive worksheets and practiev tests, they are practically the same. He's not as mean as people think, he's just gruff.
Mark is a really hard teacher. He has made very rude comments to me and other students. Chemistry is a very hard subject and I would not recommend taking it with him. He is funny at times as he is teaching but if you talk to him in private he is quick to belittle you.
Good professor
Very nice person, but very confusing test and quiz questions. Homework isn't required, but is extra credit. That really helped me out! Don't be afraid to visit his office, he is very willing to help.
Study the worksheet!!!! His quizzes are all about the worksheets. Great guy. Very unhelpful when you need help. Very passionate about his work and about science history.
I do not recommend him. His tests are extremely hard and he grades subjectively. He picks his favorites and does not hesitate to belittle his students.
DO NOT GET HIM AS YOUR TEACHER! He is very mean and not very helpful and very moody. If you do not learn the way he teaches your screwed!
I think he is a great teacher that has changed my view on chemistry. I was interested in it before but he actually prompted me to change my program to chem. He has a lot of energy and passion for chem and it shows. He challenges and expects the class to work hard, but ultimately he wants his students to succeed and gives credit where credit is due.
He is okay but is very hard and straight foward, his exams are hard but he covers all the material so there are no surprizes all in all you have to work you butt off to get a good grade in his class. But you learn alot.
Great teacher with a clear and easy to follow teaching style. Extremely fair grader. Places an emphasis on doing homework and reading but doesn't skimp on covering important material during lectures. Class had weekly quizzes, and interesting/engaging labs.
Great teacher for chemistry. He is very straightforward and expects you to put in the time outside of class to earn your grade. Homework is optional, and given as extra credit towards tests (this is very helpful to your overall grade). He has practice tests available online that mirror his exams. I would definitely take him again for chem.
This has been by far the hardest class I've taken yet. Mark does not make the class easy and he expects ALOT from his students. He refuses to answer generalized questions, so be prepared! He has NO patience for ignorance or excuses. If you let him, Mark will help you through this class, but as I said...be prepared! Study, study, study!
Don't trust these old reviews! I can tell Mark has been improving on validating all student's questions. He talks quickly but clearly. Quizzes are easy. Exams are hard but fair. Homework is extra credit. I was scared to have him as a professor, but now I am pleased with the instruction I received. However, one thing: prepare for lots of sassiness!
Mark is a really funny and clear teacher. He is willing to help outside of class. I loved his class! Homework was extra credit which helped a ton. :)
This was my favorite teacher and class at EvCC. The lectures were clear, tests based on the worksheets. Study and learn the worksheets and the tests are not impossible. He doesn't allow students to waste time during class and lab, use your critical thinking skills! A is not easy, but achievable with some work.
In my section there was only 4 students left at the end. This is an intro class and he treats it as upper level. He also has an attitude like he can't be bothered. His lectures are good. I felt like I learned a lot even though my grade didn't reflect that. Retook the class from another teacher and got 100% overall. Run for your life!
Great teacher. Always willing to help. Fun labs. HAve to stay on top of things all the time. Just a great teacher.
He acts like a cool guy the first day and then your going to notice that he stars to get frustrated if someone asks too many questions, his lectures look like the test is going to be really easy and then it turns out to be supper hard, he thinks he's some type of king so on the tests he would make up his own units, and he makes mistakes
very energetic instructor!! I'm not a huge fan of chemistry, however, mark makes this class a lot of fun. You definitely are not handed an A in this course, I'm struggling just to break above a 90%, but that is up to you-he is always available to help, and give you the success tools, you just need to use them!!!
Honestly Mark can go on rants of how we need to study 4 hours a night. However aside from that he does an above average job explaining chemistry. His lectures don't always coincide with the homework or quizzes so sometimes you have to teach yourself.
He does not let his students glide by and demands they put effort in to the class. If you need help he is more than happy to help during office hours. He is also a quick grader for test and let's you know what you did wrong as long as you try
I really enjoyed his class. He makes jokes towards the subject which makes it more interesting. And his analogies to help you better understand make a lot of sense. Overall I really liked him.
Mark is a wonderful teacher; he can walk you through hard topics in multiple ways and will NEVER call your question dumb. He answers e-mails QUICKLY. HW isn't mandatory (it's extra credit!) The material presented in class is what you will be tested on, no surprises. Of course the topic isn't easy, it's Chemistry, but an A is entirely possible.
Enjoyed class and learned a lot! Mark is hilarious and always there to help. Homework is extra credit, weekly quizzes, weekly labs and a final. Doesn't use Canvas besides for announcements and the grade book. All of the quizzes are based on his lectures so I would highly recommend recording his lectures and attending class!
cool lecture really good and cleareven don't need to read the book if you take note
Hard but effective teacherSmart guy but wont call you out for dumb questions. Be focused and engaged during lectures; theyre fast paced. Gives help if you ask, wont hold your hand. Couldnt finish the whole quarter with him. When i asked for help rescheduling, he got me into another class that worked for me and asked me how i was doing a while later
Lectures are fast paced, so make sure you pay attention! All homework is extra credit, 5 points each and usually turned in on quiz days. Funny guy too, plus spends time on some cool practical application stuff for what the lecture is on. Tests are difficult and the homework is definitely the best way to practice for them. Good class!
He is kind, but he is rushed throughout the quarter and does not prepare students enough for the exams. Exams are much more difficult than the example problems.
I took CHEM 161,162 and 163 from Mark. I can honestly say he was my favorite professor at EvCC! Some people have trouble with his class because he doesn't give many homework assignments and you have to study on your own. He was always super helpful if you came to office hours. If you are self motivated getting a good grade is not hard.
I jumped into the chemistry series at EvCC already having 162 and 163 credit. Mark was super kind and awesome. The homework was extra credit and was graded on effort and completion rather than correct answers. His quizzes were exactly like the homework and his exams were tougher than the quizzes but still doable. I love his lectures!
He's a decent teacher, but he is constantly lecturing. He moves at a very fast pace in class, and he doesn't put anything online except a very vague course outline which makes it very difficult to keep up, especially if you have trouble concentrating/staying awake during lectures like I do. Don't take him if lectures aren't your thing.
Easily one of the worst teachers I have ever encountered at EvCC. He skips over stuff "you should just know" (even though most of us DONT), and spends very little time introducing new (and hard!) concepts. His tests are lengthy and extremely hard- i am a good student but ended up having to drop his class so it wouldnt effect my gpa.
The class moves at the same pace regardless of whether it's an easy concept or a hard one. Early in the quarter you can easily sleep on the class and get an A, but later you'll be left in the dust if you let your guard down. Don't expect a review for the final and don't expect much help on concepts outside of lecture (he'll assume you know already)
Mark is awesome! He is very straightforward and his explanations make the material easier to understand. He's also hilarious which is a huge plus during the two hour lectures. His class isn't easy, but you will learn. Extra credit for doing the homework.
I took Mark's class for half the quarter before dropping. He's hilarious and answers questions in depth, however, his tests are extremely difficult. The tests rely heavily on the lectures (of course) but also consists of questions that were not covered in his lectures. Homework is extra credit, but frankly, never helped in preparing for tests.
Personally, I disliked Mark's teaching style. He's heavy on lectures; we didn't have class discussions or group work. He didn't give time to finish calculations, would mumble the numbers, & his writing's messy (hard to follow). Overall, he's a nice guy but doesn't seem to use student input to better understand the class's needs.
I've been a straight A student since 6th grade, until now. Mark was great at the beginning of the year, and he helped me adjust my lab schedule when I was having some trouble. By the end of the year he kinda just gave up on us and everyone in my class struggled. I was extremely disappointed after 14 hours of studying when I got a C on my final exam.
Mark was really great. He was around to help, but you have to be proactive, and you have to know your stuff. His tests are hard, but he grades pretty generously. And he gives extra credit points here and there.
I was nervous to take Mark's class because of his reviews, but I'm so glad that I did. I actually LOVE his traditional lecture teaching style -- show up and take good notes, and you'll be fine. He only tests what he lectures on; no textbook necessary. Also great that he gives extra credit just for completing the homework. Wish I could take again.
Had mark for chem 161 and 162. Great teacher, Homework is for extra credit and optional. Lectures and labs are long, and tests are tough if you don't study. He has open office hours and will schedule time out of class if needed. Great teacher, I would take him again.
He's super awesome and sporting. If I could I would take all Chemistry classes with him. Definitely take his class because you'll understand to the very core of what you're learning. I really couldn't compare him with any other teachers I had been with. HE'S DA BEST
He is awesome teacher, who cares about student's understanding. Even though he was on a fast pace most of the time he's willing to answer any question that the students had. The material that he requires us to know is much more than the others. I love Chemistry after I took his class and he always makes us laugh and want to come to the class.
Just choose him. You won't regret. I'm a lazy typer but trust me he's super awesome
I love him . I hope hes reading this and know what a great professor he is for being so cool and understanding. I have taken many science classes with lots of teachers but none is as wholesome as Mark. I seriously want him to teach all of my classes. Seriously.
I was predisposed to have a strong contempt towards chemistry. But even though I went into the class with a negative attitude; Mark turned me into a chemistry-loving studeny. His high energy and ability to answer questions worked well and I learned boatloads. Cannot recommend more.
Makes class fun.
Mark is a very nice guy, and is clearly very passionate about what he teaches. He's very enthusiastic during lectures, and makes them interesting. I will say he is very quick during his lectures and tends to jump around a bit. For some he was hard to follow, but if you take good notes you'll be fine. Exams were tough, but manageable if you study!
If you're looking for an easy A or B, Mark isn't the professor for you. If you pay attention and study hard throughout the entire quarter, you'll learn a lot about Chemistry. Mark's lecture style is fast-paced and Socratic. All homework is extra credit, no online Pearson homework, refreshingly. If you do the homework, the tests aren't hard.
Mark Kontulis is a hard pickle. He has hard exams, hard quizzes, and hard lectures. His voice gets annoying over the course of 2 minutes. I would never take him again. He is ridiculous. I guess if youre super smart than youll pass the class but this is college so it shouldnt be this hard. I liked the labs ONLY!! He is an easy graded for that. :/
Mark wants to make sure you know Chemistry. His tests are hard, quizzes are pretty easy. And he moves at a fast pace. He's super nice, but comes across a bit mean. Don't be scared of him!! He tells funny stories almost very day!
Mark is the best! He's direct, but considerate as well.
Mark is a great guy and a fun teacher to have. His lectures are not online or power-point based instead students only take notes based on his whiteboard-type lecture. His exams are really hard and difficult, but many times the quizzes are easier. The lab reports are easy, but you need to work and study hard in this class. It's difficult to get an A
The very traditional style of teaching where everything is lecture based and written on a whiteboard. Some people may like this style while others may find it more difficult. Classes were long and only two days a week with one lab day. I think students may do better if it was broken up during the week, and focused more on specific topics.
This was a great class. Mark explained everything and used lots of examples every day. The exams are hard, but he grades super fair. He's really abrupt which can be a put off. But he's funny too.
I had a horrible teacher in for Chemistry in HS. Despite being grossly unprepared for a college-level course, I never felt lost in this class. The classes are lecture-based, but Mark asks questions and checks that everyone understands consistently. Tests and quizzes are hard but extra credit is available. Your grade is based on labs and assessments
Honestly, his teaching style wasnt the easiest for me to follow. I mostly relied on what I learned in my last 2 chem classes. Lot of lab work but once you understand what he wants, its not bad. His quizzes are based on the PLQs. I didnt use the book but its free anyway. Tons of extra credit. Final was easy and multiple choice
Amazing teacher! Mark may be a tough grader but hes always there to help if you need it. Study for your tests and your weekly quizzes and youll be okay. He uses the online textbook and has the best lectures ever!
He teaches fast and you really have to work for it, but overall he is a good teacher and puts the info out there. He is very nice and if you seek help he will give it to you in a considerate way.
Right now I am currently in 162 - the next level class. While I was scared to take him in Fall Quarter, I can assure you that if you devote your time to studying, you will do well. Each lecture has an extra-credit "PLQ" that gives you 2+ points for the weekly quiz which helps! He does go fast and teaches on the whiteboard, but it's not too bad.
Mark is a great instructor and makes his lectures fun and informative. As long as you put in effort, he will put in just as much effort to help you succeed. The exams are tough but he doesnt put anything on them that he hasnt gone over in class, and sometimes he puts questions From other quizzes or homework word for word in the exams.
He is a very hard professor. His material in class seems easy and the quizzes are easy but when you take his tests its very VERY hard. Doesnt go over any of the hard stuff in class so when you get the tests you have a slim chance of doing good. He is very defensive and doesnt offer a lot of help. When you dont understand something ur screwed
I really liked Mark's class. He gave lots of extra credit, which I needed because the class is hard. But his lectures are really great and he answers all questions, even from the crazy people.
Mark is hands down one of my favorite teachers I've taken at EvCC. I had him for 161 and 162. The homework is all extra credit that counts towards the quizzes in the class. Tests are hard much manageable. Ask him questions outside of class (or in class) and he's super helpful. Considered taking 163 with him even though I don't need it. Great guy
The quizzes are easy, and tests are hard. But if you do all the worksheets and ask for help, you will get a good grade.
It can be jarring to have him point out that you've asked him a stupid question, but he's not trying to call you out or anything, he's being friendly, and genuinely cares. His teaching style seems to be a lot of working out examples on the board and having students help along the way. You can tell he's passionate about chemistry and biochem.
I only rate professors if I really like them and Mark is hands down the best chem professor at EvCC! He has tough exams but if you put in the time and ask him for help, he is always willing to answer questions! I wouldnt have passed Chem 162 or 163 if he wasnt my professor !
Mark is excellent. I found his class to be very easy, if you have solid algebra foundations you'll get an A for all three courses. His grading is inconsistent, comparing notes with students it's clear there exists some preference in answer style, it's really luck of the draw. Always kind, goes above and beyond for students. Best in the Chem dept.
Had him for UW summer quarter (online). Adorkable, but can be kinda blunt if you ask a dumb question or give a wrong answer. Lectures are very simple, lots of example problems, and he gives extra credit assignments after every lecture (PLQs). He doesn't release the keys for those, though. Exams are short answer, final is multiple choice. <:)
Chem152 UW Online. Honestly one of the best STEM profs I had at UW. Teaches through a whiteboard. He explains things thoroughly and answers questions during lecture as well as responds quickly to emails. HW is extra credit and mimics the exams! As long as you do the homework and study, you will do well. ^^^
Mark is an amazing teacher, I'd take CHEM& 162 with him next quarter but sadly it isn't a class I need for my transfer plan. Attendance is "mandatory" but if you can't make it he uploads to YouTube. There is a free online textbook but I never used it. Homework after pretty much every lecture (x2 week)but you can do it with a partner which is great.
Difficult but rewarding class. Even though it was stressful to complete the timed quizzes and exams, I learned to solve problems more efficiently. Because I took this class virtually, most of my study time involved rewatching lectures. Lots of extra credit. Definitely work with others on labs.
Heavy, fast-paced, and messy lectures, but they're all recorded. Attendance is not mandatory. Tests and quizzes are difficult and timed, but questions are very similar to the HW (which is extra credit). He responds very quickly to emails, but sometimes can be a bit ambiguous. Very kind and funny. Labs are easy free points.
Mark is the best professor I've ever had. You can tell he's passionate about chem so if you study and do the hw then you will excel. He thoroughly explains concepts, answer questions, and quickly respond to emails. The hw is extra credit, but resembles the quizzes and exams. Although the lectures are dense, they are recorded and posted to YouTube.
Best class ever. Lots of sample problems and exams are exactly like practice. Throws in some hard questions, but grades easy.
Mark is amazing! He brings so much energy to his lectures. He made learning online feel more normal than any of my other professors. His labs are worth a lot of points and require a lot of work outside of class, so make sure you put enough time into them. His tests are fair and so is his grading. If you do the work, you will get a good grade!
Mark is one of the best teacher I have ever had. He gives great, straight forward lectures. He never tests you on things that were not taught in class and he has extra credit assignments that help you for the quizzes and tests. I definitely recommend taking his course.
Learning in his class was so difficult for me. Everything seemed so unclear and unorganized. I had a hard time trying to comprehend what he was explaining; even though his live lessons were recorded, going back to his videos wouldn't help me. Although this may be a me problem, this could potentially screw you over if you take his class.
I really like Mark's class. If you do all the work and review the lectures you, it was easy. He answers emails super fast and helps out when you are studying. It's annoying that he doesn't post answers, but he gives you the answers if you ask.
I am in Marks class rn and it is awesome. He gives a worksheet everyday for extra credit and uses the same questions from the worksheet on his tests. He only tests on what he does in lecture and on worksheets!!
Be wary of few things: Read the textbook before lectures. Ask questions in his online lectures, he always answers them. Go to his office hours a day or two before exam so that its easier. He limits the time for tests so use the textbook questions to practice your speed in answering questions. This can help you pass and make it way more easier.
Mark has a lot of energy and passion for chemistry. Sometimes, he comes off as a bit rude, but I found him to be very caring one-on-one. Definitely not an easy class, but I learned a lot. Theres an extra credit worksheet to go with every lecture, and the quizzes are almost exactly the same. Quizzes and tests were all timed, so keep that in mind.
Wonderful guy. Very funny. Very friendly. A fairly difficult class; it really requires that you know how to take your own notes. However, tons of extra credit is offered. The lectures are informative and detailed, but not too slow, and are just hard enough that they push you without losing you. 11/10, I would take this class times over.
This professor is amazing. By far the best chemistry professor here. His class structure was simple; Homework to learn, Quizzes to quiz, and exams to test your knowledge. He moved really fast in his lectures, but he records them, so you can go back and watch them in an information-dense format. He loves teaching the science of chemistry, 100/10!
I took Mark at UW for summer Chem 152. The class was fantastic. He really is the best STEM lecturer I had. He is old school and legit lectures. But he is organized and concise and uses words that make sense. Also he asks questions just like his practice questions and extra credit for doing practice worksheets.
I got a way higher grade than I thought. The class is difficult but he is pretty generous in grading. lectures are to the point and fast, but recorded. PLQ extra credit worksheets helped me.
One of the BEST instructors I've ever had. He wants you to succeed if you put in the work and ask for help. Very energetic in lectures and likes to make them interactive. Quizzes and exams are INCREDIBLY similar to the practice questions he offers AS EXTRA CREDIT. Responds to emails very fast even at night. Overcame my fear of CHEM because of him.
Mark is absolutely a joy to learn from! He is literally the sweetest man, been recommending him to anyone I can. His labs were professional, organized, and well thought out. His lectures were fast-paced but available to rewatch. His tests and exams were just like his extra credit work, with plenty of opportunity for practice. Really great guy
Mark is 20/10. If you are at EVCC take him for Chemistry. There is literally no busy work and he is nice and caring also. I got a B, but I didn't do all the practice sheets and extra credit. His quizzes are easy and tests are harder.
Mark is an awesome professor! He really knows his stuff and knows how to explain it to us non-chemists. He is super enthusiastic and that makes the class more interesting. He gives tons of opportunities for extra credit, make sure to take advantage of them. He is super organized, so it is easy to plan your homework load.
I love Mark's style. He only tests on what he goes over in lecture and on worksheets. And the practice worksheets are extra credit too. His lectures are very entertaining and not boring at all. I def think you should take him, but you must do all the practice work to get a good grade!
Mark is awesome and wants you to learn. He made chemistry interesting. I recommend attending the lectures so you can ask questions, but you must at least watch the lectures or you will not succeed in this class. Also, do the homework and lab prep as you will need all the points you can get for the exams, which are extremely challenging.
I love this class and I am bummed that Mark is not teaching the next class I have to take. He makes it easy because of extra credit, but the tests are hard.
I think he cares that you're learning, but his teaching style isn't for me. Grades are based off of tests/labs. PLQs are optional for extra credit so I'd recommend doing all of them. Also, if you mess up on a test, it's difficult to make a rebound (not impossible though) because homework isn't graded so you won't know where your weak points are.
I liked the simple course structure. Mark never had any surprises, so it was easy to plan. His lectures are not boring.
Do not rely on the lectures for all information- I found the lectures to be confusing to follow and watched a lot of Youtube videos to keep track. As long as you stay organized and follow the schedule provided you will be fine.
def the best prof I have had. exams are hard, but Mark preps u for them with worksheets. the worksheets are extra credit. no busy work, only quizzes exams and labs based on lectures. answers email fast too.
Made it easy to understand material that you aren't familiar with because he explained it in non chem terms. Labs are really easy to get a good grade on. Make sure you study for the exams and quizzes though because they will bite you in the back if you don't. Has a lot of EC opportunity. Recommend especially for those who aren't strong in chem.
just wasn't pleasant to be in his class. He's gives loads of hw
I finished two quarters with Mark and loved his lectures. At first I was scared because he can be blunt, but he's really nice and easy to talk to. He was very understanding when things came up. The tests were just like the worksheets (PLQ) and he had extra credit to boost. Labs were easy. 20/10
Me and my study group loves Mark! He made class fun to be in and all the assignments were practice test questions worth extra credit. We had him 2 quarters, and i wish he is teaching all the classes.
Mark was the professor for UW Summer Chem 152. The class was 20/10. Mark's lectures are to the point and easy to follow. He only asks test questions like his practice questions. He was the best prof I has at the UW so far.
This class was 10/10 but hard.
Mark makes the material engaging and easy to understand, even for non-chem students. Exams are challenging, but the extra credit opportunities and unstuck ai help boost your grade.
Lectures were so useful and engaging, I did not open the textbook once and ended with an A in the class. Great sense of humor during lectures and lab, was never bored. Practice problems and post lecture questions were very similar to exams. You could tell he genuinely cares about people succeeding and liking chemistry, would take again!
Mark goes above and beyond to ensure that students are successful. Quickly responds to emails, lots of extra credit, enthusiastic lectures, gladly takes the time to pause in lecture if students have questions. Exams consist of applying concepts instead of memorizing. Just do the assignments and ask for help when needed. Excellent Prof!
He was nice and a good professor, but was not very helpful for students struggling in the class, and his explanations when asked questions were very unhelpful.
Recorded lectures so I could watch anytime was very helpful. Lectures are easy to follow and I did not need the textbook at all. Mark made the info easy to grasp, but he did ask hard questions on tests. I definitey taking his class next quarter.
Mark's 161 class is fire. Lectures are easy to follow and fun. i am def taking him for 162. No complaints really, i think he is nice too. answers emails fast.
Mark is nice he allows open book/open notes on all tests but lectures are hard to follow since he talks fast and assumes we know everything. Don't be late to lab he will not let you in. When students ask questions he says 'Try it out and let me know how it works' when we are so lost. He gives extra credit each week that will prepare you for exams
I'm going to take him for 162 although his lectures at first were great but later made me lost. So, if you don't really know chem, I'd say don't take it unless it's a requirement. Also, make sure to be on time for lab and the PLQ extra credit didn't really have enough practice for the exams. The exams are kind of hard but great teacher! 100/10!
I really liked the 161 class. Mark was kind and funny, and his lectures are easy to follow for me. He recorded lectures so I could watch them when I had time.
I liked Mark a lot. Lots of practice problems that are just like his quizzes. Practice is extra credit too.
I am about to graduate from uw, and I took mark's chem a few years ago. tbh, mark's class prepared the best for the uw and my clases there. there was no bs, and he made you think about your answers. he gave lots of prep that made studying easy and taught me how to study classes at uw.
Hilarious professor; he is high-energy, and it makes the lectures so much more fun. Highly recommended.
First professor I've ever had who took off points for being too detailed. Will kick you out of class without hesitation. He doesn't help you when you have questions and expects you to figure it out yourself. He also talks very meanly.
just took first exam in chem 161. loving this class bc mark does exactly what his practice is. he does try to ask hard questions tho. if u do all the work it's cake. he is straight up, so he calls out slackers.
Great guy, asks questions on exams exactly like practice. Tries to "level up" some questions, but you can get a good grade without these. Pretty rigid with deadlines, so that's annoying; but he is upfront about that. No BS though so 10/10
don't need to attend lectures because they're all posted and every lecture has corresponding extra credit worth 2 points. exam/quiz heavy, labs don't really mean much, and he's super easy on grading them. i love mark and i wish i could take him for 162! exams/quizzes are pretty predictable too (nothing out of the blue)
