He is a man hater so all you ladies sign up guys stay away
looses papers, Man hater, Makes False Accusations
His class is really easy to follow. He's a pretty good teacher, and makes the lecture interesting. It's also a pretty easy A to me.
Kind of pretensious, and dosn't give long enough for his tests.
This Boy Meets World Dad look alike is a shameless self-promoter, when he actually shows up to class, he likes to spend class bashing organized labour and going on and on about how much he has contributed to modern theatre. watch out for his tests.

Looks and acts just like Gilderoy Lockhart (pretends he has all the answers, but really doesn't know what he's talking about)

Gah, he drives me nuts!
This class was so ****ty! I did not learn very much!

He really isn't a bad guy, I actually thought he was really nice! he pretty much tells you during lecture, "this is probly gonna be on the test." if u go to class half the time, and do the extra credit you'll get an A. Don't listen to the whiner
Conceited professor who has nothing in common with the students he teaches & he thinks he's god.
Condescending. Horrible tests. Inflated ego. Harsh grading if he corrects your papers, easy grading if the TA's do it. And I really hate it when +/-'s are left out of the grading system.
He was funny his tests were exactly like the review he gives out and he doesn't grade papers that hard (and I'm a bad writer). It's not the most interesting class though

Class is very easy. Tests are multiple choice, but don't guess, because if you guess wrong he will DEDUCT points from your score. Gives a list of possible questions ahead of time. Picks the test questions from that list, so it's very easy to study for.
He just liked to here himself talk. Do the extra credit and you will get an A
he is good overall, dosent grade too harsh, explains everything in class
three words: egotistical ****
Nothing we talked about in class was in the book, and MOST of his test material comes from the book so you WILL have to study it. On the other hand class discussion was fun and interesting. The TA drove me nuts, but I think those change every quarter. Notes are online so if you miss class, go there!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!! All he does is talk about his personal life and how wonderful theatre is and that film is satan. He babbles on and on about nothing. I didn't go to class alot and still got an A. I thought theater would be fun, he ruined it for me!
Easy, why is everyone complaining about easy-laid back lectures? I would rather listen to that! It's a good GUR course.
I really enjoyed the class. His lectures were interesting and he tells some funny stories. The tests are easy if you look over the study guide. Writing about the shows you watch was probably the hardest and it wasnt even that hard. Make sure to use imagery.
Talked about himself most of the time. Tests were remarkable in their ambiguity. I stopped going to class because I couldn't stand the guy.
Really funny and SUPER sarcastic, both traits I enjoy in a professor. You get as much out of lecture as you put into it, he has a lot of class discussion. Tests were pretty easy if you did the work. Plus, part of your homework is going to plays, which was awesome. Looks kinda like Kevin Kline.
Horrible
I have had very few professors who could be so successful teaching a 300-person class; his classroom presentation is really engaging. I also appreciate the exploration of issues around what defines art and about gender & ethnic issues in contemporary theatre.
Mark rocks, but you have to understand that 101 is a very general class. It's a GUR, deal with it. His tests actually test if you know the material, which is really awesome because you actually learn something. His classes can indeed get redundant and egotistical, but as an intro to theatre course, it is a great class.
He gets his job done
Tests are easy, graded too much on your writing skills rather than the content of the paper. If I wanted to take an english class I would have enrolled in english 101...didn't teach much about theater. A waste of my time.
Mark is amazing. He's obviously a Brecht follower and it's nice to see him in action. His ideas for communicating as a director, and staging will blow your mind. Sometimes he's a little tough to follow. I think that may just be the genius.
Loved the class. Pretty easy. Test can be kinda tricky but if you study, you'll do fine. Hardest part was writing the play reviews, but you basically can rewrite it until you get the grade you want. Highly recommended!
Funny, student conscious guy, he talks to the back of the classroom because the front typically gets more attention. He brings up interesting points, we have interesting discussions, and it's an all around interesting class. Lacks practical application, but hey, the homework is watching plays and assesing them. We all need a little more theatre.
Had never seen me act and told me to change my major....supportive?? Not so much.
If you love theatre, youll like him. he has lots of stories. if youre taking it as a filler, youll get bored.
Mark is an amazing teacher, and an amazing human. He truly cares about students, and their lives. And he'll make you think of things in ways you never thought you could!
320 person class, he did a GREAT job. Very funny, had us see great plays. Would really recommend. ATTEND THE CLASSES & PLAYS, or don't complain when you fail! :)
seemed like a really nice guy. Really into sexual theams in his plays and a little volgure at times. Tests were semi-hard, only because the format was foreign.
He is one of the most arrogent people i have encountered in my entire life. All theater majors have to take the course but don't let it discourage you, the other theater profs are all prety good. Mark tends to be very biast towards theater, and expects more than most teachers on campus. Natorious for theater majors pulling Cs.
Class seemed like a waste of time. A lot of discussion time = not learning much. Although not a hard class in general, harder than I expected due to being a class about plays.
Pretty big ego! That aside, this class was a breeze, and ****z is the perfect person to be teaching this class. His love for theatre is pretty appearent. His hatred for motion picture was vastly annoying, but that is more for angering students more than anything else.A good chunk of points comes from just coming to class- easy class!
Not the best prof. Easy class, but only because if you have the right grader, you can BS your way though the class. Very egotistical, and his essay questions are some of the most confusing I've ever tried to answer. He does know how a play works, but his ego and bias overshadow his ability.
I guess this class was as good as it could've been. It's not hard, so if you need an easy GUR go for it. Be warned, it's a TON of work for only 3 credits, in my opinion. No book needed, so that is a major bonus. ****z is cool, he's a bit of a dork but what prof isn't?
This class is cake, show up and sleep if nothing else as he uses a TA to take notes for you! Most of the class is pointless discussions that have no contribution to any of the test material plus, no book! You do have to pay to see two plays, but what's that like $15?! ****z has a huge dislike of TV, fyi.
Best professor ever!
lame. Lame. LAME! Anyone who knows anything about theater should skip this class. So dull. I fell asleep every morning, so BORING. His idea of a mid-term was 177 true/false questions. I was so bored.
The class dicussions are pointless, the study guides are lazily made and the only reading comes in the form of articles written by smug elite-class theater-goers. Then you get tested on that. I'm sorry if I don't want to memorize the opinions of hard-asses. In summary, the class could be good if the prof wasn't so lazy and full of himself.
I was bitter about the structure, content, and expectations of this class for a long time: this is the introductory of introductory courses, yet required for theatre majors. But... wait until you work with Mark in a different setting-- 101 feels like a thing of the past.
Mark is hilarious! He's such an awesome guy. Get to know him on a personal level... it helps!
I was interested in theater prior to taking this class, but I really didn't learn much about it and I have completely lost interest. He grades papers too hard and the basis of the tests are several uninspiring articles written by people with large egos.
What a god awful teacher. I couldn't stand the man....so full of himself, disorganized, unavaliable and he out and out lies about stuff. Huge ego way out of porportion to any talent I saw ....as a director he sucks. Actors actually fell asleep on stage in the last play he did it was so boring.........
Ugh. Terrible class. I usually love theatre. I didn't with Mark. He was self-absorbed and, though he would ask student opinions in discussions he would usually just make what they said fit his own narrow-minded opinions. The tests were confusing and I thought his grading on papers was kind of harsh. Obnoxious guy, obnoxious class.
Funny guy, knows his stuff. Most people in the class are overly dramatic about what they think of him. Probably because they're theatre majors. I liked his cynicism, his open-form classes, and the lack of text books. He's a really cool guy.
Mark is hilarious. His class is super fun. You learn a lot. Tests are decent. Just read and go to class. I love his theatre stories and he's just an all around great guy.
Very much full of himself but not a difficult class, if you have a theatre backgound this class is a peice of cake
He's an arrogant prick; I even mailed him to ask a question and he referred me to the class notes...which it wasn't in. He's a good lecturer though and knows how to get his material across, the class is a good GUR and very easy. No textbook, only need to spend $ to attend two plays.
Mark picks favorites and his tests are based on the opinions of pompous theater critics (all are online articles). Then you take a ridiculously long true/false test based on these opinions. He is no help at all and has no basis to his review grading. I have always been a very strong writer and he gave me 2 D's on my essays. Don't take this class!
This class has an open discussion rule, which is great, but I wish there would have been more structure because I wanted to learn more about plays, acting techniques...but really you just talk for an hour.
The class in and of itself is intersting. However, his grading is subjective (which is something that has always bothered me) and he has no right to be grading writing, since some of the grammar issues he told us, were just plain wrong. I love theatre, but he is not the best professor ever.
Mark T. ****z knows his stuff. That being said, its hard to take the class because some of the people are annoying and because its open discussion, it makes it a LONG hour.
The most boring prof I have taken to date. I went to all the classes hoping to find something interesting but nothing. His grading is biased, he has favorites, and he is not the least bit helpful in way at all. On top of that he doesn't care how great of a writer you are, if he doesn't like you, he's giving you a low score.
It's an easy-ish GUR credit. I wish I would've taken another class for my humanities credits because I don't feel like I learned anything. Plus you're stuck with a TON of theater majors who think they are God's gift to the world. No textbook, but you have to see two plays and read several boring articles.
This class is so boring especially if you are actually a theatre person. He gets super off topic and doesnt accept any ones opinion that differs from him. Its a 101 GUR and he still grades hard on the reviews you have to right. If you are gonna take it because you think its an easy A... DONT!
This teacher is awful. He only hears the opinions of the loud mouth kids who constantly comment and it's easy to tell he agrees because he nods with them but moves on to the next person if he disagrees. His journal reviews are rediculous. We don't write for the Seattle Times! The class AVG on the 2nd paper was a D, with no curve, no curve was given
Mark is AWESOME! I love this guy. He's really nice and I highly recommend you get to know him on a personal level. He's a really great guy, loves students and clearly loves teaching. Take his classes and do your work!
A very fair teacher. Theatre teachers in general can come off as opinionated or smug, but in general Mark stays away from this. Values opinions of those who speak up and is a very fair grader and professor.
Writes a good letter of rec for grad school...
Mark is an amazing professor. He knows his craft and is obsessed with making us learn. I wish he taught every class at Western.
Do not take Theater 101 with him! He drones ON and ON abut useless stuff! Did not learn ANYTHING abut theater that I would consider useful. Very unorganized, boring class, harsh and unfair grader. Take class with a different professor who will actually teach you something and grade fairly!!
If this isn't your major, you probably will not enjoy him. You'll learn a lot but the class is directed towards people who live and breathe theater. Go to class because he loves giving pop quizzes that are participation-based.
Mark is one of the best, most caring, brilliant, professors at WWU. Do not listen to comments from people who took THTR 101 from them because they are mainly Freshman who don't care about theater and are taking it for an "easy A." If you have a theater interest you will love this man. He is also one of the best directors in the Northwest.
He's a pretty good teacher and seems like a good guy. Sometimes the class just droned on, but not too bad.
This was a hybrid class so we met once a week. So you would think it would be interesting. However, he was boring & talked about nothing important. He was very rude to me & cancelled his office hours randomly w/o notice (even the day before a midterm). It was an easy A, but he was a frustrating man to deal with & VERY unorganized. Not recommended.
Mark is awesome. He's very good with feedback, super nice, and knows what he's talking about. As long as you finish your script analysis on time, you'll be just fine.
Mark made such an impact on my life, and my husband's life, that we had him officiate our wedding. Theatre 101 is such a whatever class--if you take a class with him, like playwriting or directing, about which he is truly passionate, you will get SO MUCH out of it. Dude knows his stuff and is a great guy to have a postgrad beer with.
This was probably the best feedback I've ever received in a class. He commented on every single one of the things I turned in with a TON of response, no matter how big the assignment was. He was super helpful when I asked questions. As a theatre major taking this course, it was definitely geared toward the people who take it for the GUR, very easy.
Mark is a fantastic prof. I didn't want to take 370 initially, but he made it really interesting and enjoyable. He was also very understanding when I was having difficulties. His feedback can seem a little harsh at first, but once you get to know him you realize it's just dry humor, and he really cares and wants to help you do well.
This is a great teacher! All he wants from you is to really get excited for the material. He has lots of in class discussions which are excellent because he really knows his stuff. He gives tons of easy points and his quizzes are not tricky he just wants to know you read the stuff. It's a fun and easy A! no text book just tickets to a play!
I have him for theater 101 and the class is all lecture and discussion. He tells lots of stories about when he was young and his directing and acting experience. No textbook but we did have to buy tickets to see 2 shows - cost of 50$ min. Fairly graded but are occasionally quizzes on HW but fairly easy to guess if you have an idea.
Grades way too difficult for a THTR 101 class. The class is discussion based and most of the discussions are pointless, I do not get anything from the class. Also makes you go to two plays, for one the tickets start at $50. Avoid Mark if taking THTR 101
If you like discussing theater its a great GUR, he loves theater and you can tell. though quality of class depends on your classmates on how the discussion goes. No textbook but had to buy tickets to a couple of musicals (one of witch was bad). Tests are multiple choice lots of true false.
The class was mediocre and won't take anything away from it. Required us to see 2 musicals which ended up costing about $60 overall. BUT, we didn't have to buy a textbook so that was nice. There was either a pop quiz or some sort of activity each day to mark attendance. These add up over time so don't skip! Do the homework, it isn't much.
This class has nothing to do with theater, most of the time it's a discussion of modern day issues. Would not take this class again. Took it to get an easy A, but he grades too hard for a 3 credit GUR class. Also 2 plays are mandatory, one of them being in Seattle. Ridiculous for a GUR
I took this class with Mark expecting it to be an easy A. Mark seems to make it his goal to not have it that way. Pop quizzes are random and always on specifics from hour long videos assigned every day, and his final was asinine and way too challenging for what the class really should have been about. I learned NOTHING and NEVER missed a class.
Basic class, though the work load seems heavy as long as you do what you're supposed to and show up you will get an A, Mark doesn't judge quality. Mark is nice, funny, and can offer decent feedback - though playwrights won't get much out of this, it's really an intro class, it is a good way to force yourself to write and see your peers at work.
I took Mark's class in the fall and felt it was wonderful. I see a lot of complaints about the two show requirement, but it's cheaper than a textbook and much cheaper than $50 (there was a code you could use online to get one ticket for $15 and the other ticket was only $7, so people saying $50+ didn't pay attention! More fun than your average GUR.
Really enjoyed the class itself. The work is fun, and most criticism is connected with effort. I will say that it was mentioned on the first day of class how much attendance affected your grade, and was never mentioned again. We learned at the end of the quarter that many of us would need extra credit just to pass the class.
Mark is a really nice guy, passionate and knowledgable about theater. The class is easy if you go to class and watch the assigned videos on canvas before every class. My only complaint is that he is not specific about the material that will be on his exams and the class is not as structured as I prefer (classes are just an open ended convo)
Mark is a really great guy who is passionate about what he teaches and is relatively easy to follow and understand. There is no textbook but you will have to pay to see 2 shows during the quarter and there are articles and videos almost every day in the modules on canvas. He gives a lot of random Quizzes and "Goodies"
Lots of videos to watch and some classes you will be quizzed on others will just be to talk about in class. He has a tendency to talk about a lot of other topics other then theatre and gets very political and seems to have a hard time excepting others opinions and interpretations of art.
This class was a complete waste of time. Please, I beg of you, if you don't have to take this class as a pre-req, avoid it at all costs. We hardly even talked about theatre at all, mostly like the politics around it. I'm really glad the class was only 50 minutes, it felt like I was back in a high school class that didn't matter.
I loved Mark's class! He has a real passion for theatre and it shows in his lectures, which are more like big discussions. Attendance is graded by quizzes on the canvas modules (1hr of reading and videos at most per lecture) and "goodies" which are just quick opinion write-ups. Midterm was multiple-choice and easy. Would definitely take again!
To be honest with you this class was a waste of time and money and I wish I didnt have to take it. If youve already taken a theatre class ever you wont learn anything and the professor is a tad abrasive at best.
Most of his grade is based on "goodies." They are pop quizzes that are based on the modules that you are asked to review before class. They are generally very easy articles and or videos that take about 15 minutes to read over. He is so passionate about what he does and is so accessible to his students. He loves what he does.
You can't miss class because he does "Goodies" or quizzes on the modules most days. There are only 2 tests and 2 play reviews. The tests are a joke and are somehow difficult while being on nothing talked about in class. He asks trick questions and thinks he is being funny. I learned so much more in high school theatre. Waste of time, don't take it!
He has random "goodies" which are just questions to make sure you attended class. The majority of the grade is based on two tests and two play reviews. The reviews are strangely hard to get a good grade too. Not only that, but he forced the class to watch a play all the way down in Seattle which we had to find our own transportation. Don't take it.
Conceited, talks about himself as much as he can. First month is about how film can never live up to theater. Required us to go to two plays one was in Seattle and we had to find our own transport and cost some people over $100 to go to. Constant pop quizzes, 3 hours of homework on top of an essay with a quiz to follow the same day. Not worth it.
Mark is great at teaching the material the class has to offer. Theatre 101 was a GUR for me so I wasn't that interested in the class to begin with and I am still not but that's okay! Mark made me appreciate and know all the hard work that goes into theatre productions. Most of the class is usually discussion too which I like in my opinion.
I love Mark! He's such a cool down to earth dude. His class was so interesting. One of the best discussion classes I've taken, we actually had conversations! The only issue I have with him is some of the test questions were worded in a very confusing way or they were on things we ended up not going over in class. I will take another class with him!
If you are looking to take Theatre 101 as someone who likes theatre and has been in shows, this class is not for you. If you have never stepped foot into a theater and are curious about it, then I would recommend this class. Just beware that this is not really about theatre, its about art in general and what freedoms artist do or do not have.
The class is super easy. Just go to class and listen and you will definitely pass. The only downside is that you need to go see a show in Seattle. Sometimes theres provided transportation though.
I've been involved in theater the majority of my life. I've taken multiple classes and had lead roles in shows. I read the reviews and decided that most of the negative reviews were from people who didn't care for theater and it would be easier for me since I already knew so much. NOPE. Tests were ridiculous. No guidance on what to study at all.
PSA: YOU MOST LIKELY HAVE TO MAKE A TRIP TO SEATTLE IF YOU'RE IN HIS 101 CLASS, BE PREPARED FOR THIS. I didn't, and had to scramble to find the money and time to do this. Its an easy class, just incredibly annoying in how he executes it, you're better off taking it with literally anyone else. It boring and non-informative, but easy.
Mark is just the best! This class is a lot of work, but if you're passionate about theatre you'll love it. I only wish I could've shown my final but the school closed before I got the chance. You do not want to take this online, take it in person !! Great feedback and advice, great dude!
Assignments are easy, but careful with the quizzes. The quizzes were about one per week and 5 minutes only for each and gave me a lot of test anxiety just taking them. Make sure to take notes on everything in the module. All quizzes are created from the old articles, ancient mp3s, and videos, with sometimes more than 5 questions.
This professor is super kind and supportive, he really made the online class feel like more of a community, which is a challenge right now. The class is pretty easy if you've been in a show before. Just do the readings and you'll be fine. He's a really understanding and thoughtful professor.
This class is extremely easy online. As long as you read the material and watch the videos you can pass the quizzes. I was able to complete the module that was due every week in under two hours usually. Professor is really understanding if you miss a quiz
Have one assignment per week and a quiz each Monday. Easy quiz as long as you read the material (not heavy reading). Lectures are usually about controversial subject but a very nice discussion space.
There were a lot of readings but also, they didn't always apply to the lectures. He was an okay teacher, but a good introduction to the theater department here. The quizzes had all of the exact same questions as the midterm and final (they were all on quizlet).
Mark was ok. He decided to move our class from a lecture hall to a small classroom that sat the exact amount of students in the class because he wanted a more "intimate" space. This resulted in 4 positive COVID cases over the course of the quarter. His lectures weren't particularly inspiring, but the final is all of the questions from the quizzes.
I never leave reviews for professors, since I hope that every professor cares about their students and wishes for them to succeed. However, the level of intricate, specific detail in which this professor REQUIRES from all assignments is absurd and underhanded. Students are shown little to no respect. For a class based on creativity, there is none.
Mark preaches that no one can comment poorly on work, and only constructively criticize. However, I guess that went out the window for me. The class, and Mark, absolutely ripped my work to shreds. They called it "dull," "useless," and straight up not good. Have a thick skin if you want to take this class, & expect mark to join on your hate-train.
It all seems very biased to what he believes. A lot of the class is listening to the worst opinions you have ever heard and talking about things that feel barely related to theatre. It has been miserable being in his class since he just talks on and on and it's always about things that are not theatre related I swear.
The class is most ramblings on random topics that are not even theater related, and I never felt like I learned anything from it. For as much as the class seemed to be reliant on "community" and "discussion", talking with Mark never really felt comfortable.
This professor does not have any good knowledge of directing and would rather use unjust practices in his teachings. Do not take this professor if you are able to.
I dislike his teaching style. The lectures seem to have little structure, he'll ask a question and just spend the whole time listening to students opinions on the question. His grading is very strict to a point where even if you've followed the rubric to a T you'll still get something wrong. The quizzes are easy all the answers are given in class.
His lectures are sometimes interesting and relate to current events. His grading process was a bit questionable. His grading seems to be based on his opinion more than the rubric. Gives vague feedback. Overall I think he's ok. In order to do well you REALLY have to pay attention in class. For reviews, read the example ones as well as the rubric
The lectures were almost always off topic and featured the same 5 people talking about how much they love their high school theater. Tried participating a few times but it was clear that his POV was the only correct one to him. Quizzes are easy but frequent and the big exams recycle questions from them. If you need the GUR take a different class.
I missed several classes, the professor reached out to make sure I was okay. He gave good feedback that was useful. This class made me feel so much more comfortable with presenting my work to groups. I was able to write work that I am really proud of. Attendance will bring your grade down (hence why I got a b-), weekly quizzes (pretty easy).
Mark puts minimal effort into teaching, often asking one question and then letting freshmen overshare for an hour. Worse, he uses his platform as a professor to encourage unsafe and unethical practices in theatre, such as advocating against using trigger warnings for plays, or saying that having an intimacy choreographer makes it "less authentic".
Mark Kuntz is a terrible educator. His lectures are pointless, self absorbed rants simply just for him to hear the sound of his own voice. He requires you write a 13 page script analysis for a 10 minute scene from a play, and if you don't do it 100% right, you fail his class. I would never recommend his class if it weren't required.
If you're just trying to take a GUR don't take this class. This really is just a discussion class and he talks so much, and he never answered most of my emails either. If you don't go to class, you most likely won't pass. Save yourself the time and take another GUR.
Wouldn't accept late work even for unavoidable emergencies.
Never again will I ever take a class with Mark. You could skip a whole month and probably miss nothing since the class is just reminiscing group therapy for the same 5-8 freshman to take over the lectures or let Mark ramble about unrelated topics. He tells you to email him if you have concerns about anything and he NEVER responds. A waste of time.
Mark was interesting at first, but you quickly come to realize his curriculum is reused from many years ago and the quizzes he gives on outdated readings and events are frequent. I wish he would put more effort to refresh the curriculum to actual current times or at least some of it. He seems to just let freshman talk the whole class with no plan.
About 1 out of every 10 statements Mark makes is useful advice, the rest are anecdotes about his unethical directing practices. He's very experienced and he gives specific feedback that's easy to follow, but the more he talks the more you decide you never want to work with him. Fortunately he won't notice if you space out or are on your phone.
Mark Kuntz doesn't care about art or theater. Mark Kuntz LIKED my directing but since I didn't write a good enough fan fiction about my play he failed me. Art is subjective but not for Mark Kuntz. He than also failed me in my writing class for not showing up to two classes. Do not take Mark Kuntz classes He needs to retire.
Professor's lectures can feel scattered, but engaging with the class discussion helps. Quizzes are easy, but grading is strict. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Definitely outdated and mostly open discussion, but I wasn't against it. I didn't enjoy how neccessary the attendance was though. To encourage us to come to class, he made us answer quiz questions you would only get in class. Great until you realize its about the same 10 people talking everyday because barely anyone used the discussions properly.
Mark is chill until: you're femme and speak in discussion, which is 99% of class--prepare to be rushed or cut off; you're disabled and communicate your needs to him -- good luck getting a care out of him; you email him about urgent matters, get a vague reply WAY too late.
He is genuinely evil, and too old to be teaching. He seems nice and easy going, until about 3 weeks in. Attendance is mandatory, but there is nothing of substance in any of the lectures. He just talks about the assigned videos, asks the class what they thought, and the same 2 annoying people are the only ones responding. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
do not take this class. attendance is mandatory for no reason. Every lecture useless, and if he did not grade ONLY on attendance, I would never go to this class. Also he was not very kind to his TA, and thoughout the entire quarter was very dismissive of her.
You have to pay to go to required theatre performances. There are no trigger warnings for those performances that had assisted suicide and abuse. He made a great topic the least interesting thing in the world. All of his test are pure memorisation.
I took 101 in fall and when I say it was hell I mean hell. Half the time class had nothing to do with theatre and the parts that did Mark just complained about how trigger warnings ruin the theatre experience. We had to go to plays and write reviews that had no tiggers for things like DV and AR. Stay away from this class
Unfortunately this class is a prereq for theater, but if you're thinking of taking it as a GUR, only do that if you're as excited by the sound of his voice as he is. Lectures are literally useless and quizzes are incredibly easy but have zero information that is actually helpful. He's a stickler and also made us pay money to see his own show.
I hardly ever write a review here bc most of the time I agree with them. However, I srsly cannot understand why so many ppl have so many bad things to say about this prof. If you make an effort, so will he & he's more than happy to give extensions or clarification on work. Too bad he's retiring, would have loved to take a class with Mark again.
The folks that hate this class are either way too easily offended or should be nowhere near theatre. Theatre often deals with TW worthy things, Mark isn't "complaining" abt them, he's giving his opinion + wants to know what his students think. He wants to facilitate conversations and (omg so surprising) introduce ppl to theatre... in an intro class
Lectures are so boring!! If you like listening to random thoughts from both the Professor and students, this is the class for you. Forces students to attend class by putting codes on assignments and quizzes. Quizzes are weirdly specific and hard, and he only gives 5 minutes. Very much a "how can I make this 101 class difficult for students".
Mark is a very interesting man who tends to bask in his whiteness despite many years of students attempting to bring him down to earth. He means well, but is also very self-interested, often making educational environments hostile and confusing. His approach to grading is problematic, despite intervention attempts. He has favorites and serves them.
