Dr Lam gets really engaged in his material. He's a great prof and is always there for you
Great Prof, extremely helpful
Dr. Lam is an incredibly patient and receptive prof who's always happy to help students understand better. Ask him anything at office hours or via email, his responses will clarify any confusion that you had. Also replies to email swiftly, usually within a day. Would definitely take another course with him.
Dr. Lam is really nice and easy-going. His exams are fair and not super challenging (he often omits questions that students have trouble with). There are also a lot of opportunities to improve your mark, such as participating in psyc studies and iClicker questions. Definitely helped me boost up my GPA :)
It was his first year as a prof but you could tell Dr. Lam was passionate about helping his students learn. I was most impressed by his decision to include a section on the stigma that people with mental disorders face, even though it wasn't included in the textbookPSYC 102 curriculum, really shows he cares about what we learn from his psych class
A teacher who is just passionate about what he or she is doing.
Dr. Lam is great! He gives tons of examples (some which include student participation!), uploads the slides on connect, and is open to student feedback. His tests aren't too challenging as long as you review his notes and read the text. Overall amazing prof who really cares about his students' understanding of the course.
Seems like a pretty new prof who's still finding his way of lecturing. Took this in the summer, so the 3 hour classes are extraordinarily difficult to sit through. Reads off slides 90% of the time. 90% of the information in lecture can be found in the textbook. Material is freakin dry, so the uninteresting-ness of the course isn't really his fault.
- 3 Midterms and 1 Final - Midterms could be quite a lot to handle but saves a lot time and effort for finals revision - Interesting lectures, participation does not count for a lot but its very useful - Quite funny
Do not take this or any psychology class as an elective PLEASE, you will thank me later when you hear your friends grades.
Dr. Lam is a really amazing and funny prof who makes me follow in love with Psyc. He is always nice and patient to answers all the students all kinds of questions, about assignments, lectures or future studies. There are three midterms in each courses, but it's easy to get a good mark if you pay more attentions to his lectures.
Dr. Lam is a great lecturer. I enjoyed attending lectures. He posts study guides before midterms which are really helpful because you know what is and is not going to be on the exam. Would recommend doing the pre-readings/using the textbook. He's reasonable, kind and empathetic.
I think he was an amazing prof, his lectures were really interesting even though I took psychology in hs and he's super nice. The assignments were marked pretty hard but besides that if you study hard for the tests (read the textbook + memorize the slides), you'll be fine. There are iclickers so there is participation + you can get extra credit.
Dr. Lam is so kind and down to earth. It may be because I have an interest in Psychology, but I found his lectures really engaging and loved to attend. It is content heavy, but he provides outlines for what he expects you to know for exams. If you want to ace them, you should stay on top of pre-readings. Go to office hours; he's so nice.
He is the best professor ever!! His lectures are amazing, he explains everything through real life examples that makes everything easy). So, each class matter, if you dont go to his lecture, you will have troubles to understand concepts. Book is important!! He is very patient, kind and helpful; he explains until you understand. His class are fun :)
Literally wish he could teach all my courses. Dr. Lam was a great professor and was always willing to provide help! Reading the textbook is definitely a smart move but his lectures are fun and he gives great lectures & examples! HIGHLY recommend!
Excellent instructor
Mark has been a great prof, a solid B is attainable by only going to lectures because he is just that thorough. He makes the lectures interesting and understandable. He hosts Q and A sessions before each midterm and final. Genuinely cares for his students.
One of the best profs I've ever had. Truly cares about students and their academic success by giving lots of opportunities for feedback and questions. Provides thorough and engaging lectures with humour, clear and well spoken. Assignments have clear rubrics and examples to help, overall a wonderful class experience!
greatest teacher ever!
He was a great prof. I highly recommend him.
The best prof I had in my first year. Incredibly engaging, helpful, and knowledgeable. Best psyc prof out there! With dedication to both lectures and the readings, you can definitely get an A!
Best prof I had for first year woke up for his 10 am lectures
You will rarely get bored with Professor Lam's way of teaching. He is very enthusiastic about his field and shows passion on what he does. I am not gonna lie though, his midterms and finals are quite tough (but fair), you just gotta study real hard.
Best prof I had in first year! He is so enthusiastic and I actually liked going to class. Once, I forgot my eraser to the exam and he lent me his own, which was so nice of him. The exams are pretty tough, but its all application based so you actually end up learning a lot and you retain what you learn.
Very listening and understanding
Really making me rethink majoring in psyc. He's a very caring prof and does a lot for his students, giving them lots of extra assignments to boost their grade but all he does is put up slides with terms you need to memorize and then he doesn't even go over all the information so you have to read the textbook and memorize those terms. DONT TAKE
Dr. Lam is a very caring lecturer. He tends to repeat the material a lot but it's helpful for learning. He explains the material in great details with different examples. Strongly recommend to take this course with him if you are trying to gain a solid basic knowledge about research.
Exams hard, boring lectures. Good to have study guides for midterms, however, his MCQ is extremely confusing.....
Good feedback. Replies to email very fast. His assignments are interesting. Although very confusing MCQs
Lectures can sometimes be dull but he goes through the material thoroughly and gives lots of examples. You MUST attend class to do well on this course as written questions on the exams are based on lecture material and his slides are pretty much bare.
Not a bad prof. I find the way he teaches you retain a lot of info from lecture as he provides many good examples. His MCQ's aren't hard at all. But I find its easy to lose marks on written section. The assignments are marked brutally though (TA's fault). TL;DR average course, not too hard, better than average prof but not amazing. 8/10
He's a solid guy but the course wasn't for me; it didn't help that the lectures were a bit dry
Iclicker! however, he is very knowledgeable and is able to relay infos very well in lectures. if you go to class, you don't even have to read the textbook unless he specifically tells you to do so! Very clear in explaining topics and genuinely amazing!
study guide is not helpful because everything is fair game. short answer questions are harder than mc questions. so much reading and not specific on what to read.
His lectures are great, very easy to understand and the exams are all fair games. Respond to email very fast and gives good feedback.
Dr Lam was an engaging prof and presented the subject matter in a way that kept his students interested; however, his exams were much more difficult than what he prepared us for, and his grading of written assignments was unfair as his instructions dont indicate exactly what he was looking for in the rubric- and for that, students were penalized
Dr. Lam cares about his students success, he has amazing lectures but you have to read the textbook to fill gaps in material and get the best grade possible, not too bad! he is very approachable and gives tons of opportunities to ask questions and learn the material. I had Psych 101 and 102 with him and would recommend! Great 1st year courses!
he is excellent!
3 exams, weekly discussions, and one assignment which are all pretty easy as long as you actually put in work. You don't have to study too hard, but its good to go over lectures, discussions, asynchronous learnings, and textbooks because the exams are a mix of all of that.
I have no cue for his exams even though i have attended every class and read the textbook. He's a nice person, but not really good at teaching. One more tips: he's not a email checking person, so email him at least couple days before quiz if you have any questions.
Dr. Lam is the best. He just wans the best for his students and is always helping them do better. His lectures are so informative and interesting. If you want a good grade make notes from his lecture slides, do the top hats and definitely take his advice on how to go about the assignments. He was the most helpful prof in my first year!
Good prof over all, super helpful if you approach him, however the exams are really REALLY hard. they are all applied questions and the lectures and textbook quizzes do not prepare you for the exams. he gives lots of side projects so your grade is not entirely based on the exams, but they still do make up about 47-57 percent of your grade in total.
Dr. Lam is a fantastic professor. I wasn't very excited for this course, but he made the content so accessible and interesting. He knows his stuff and goes the extra mile to help students learn. He's also extremely organized - the online semester was flawless!
Dr. Lam is well-prepared for all the lectures and is willing and able to explain all the concepts in a way that is easy to understand. Slides are provided. The course is super organized and he is nice enough to make tons of accommodation. We have 3 open-booked, multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blanks midterms, and 1 mandatory assignment.
lectures were useless, tests are way too hard, full of trick questions.
Loved him for the online version of psyc 217! He was very accommodating, and his lectures were very informative. You'll need to review both the textbook and his lectures for exams, but as long as you study he's an amazing prof, very engaging!
AMAZING PROF. exams consist mostly of application questions.
Helpful, supportive and understanding
I had mark Lam for psych 101 and 102 in my first year at UBC. He showed continued support and compassion with my transition from high school! If you put in the effort to do good he will help you achieve your goal.
Dr. Lam is a great professor, he responds super quickly to emails and was a great lecturer. Made 1.5hr lectures interesting the entire time.
Taking online courses with Dr. Lam has been a straightforward and good experience. PSYC 101/102 (online) consists of simple in-class participation with tophat, 1-2 written assignments, 3 midterms (usually 2 chapters each), and live lectures that are recorded. He also provided an emergency 24-hr extension you can use for any assignment. Great prof!
Dr. Lam is extremely accommodating and caring. Class structure was flexible during the pandemic. Though he communicates lecture learning goals, they don't translate well to his exams as they are highly ambiguous and oftentimes do not reflect the learning goals. Many questions are application ones that weren't discussed and are super unclear.
I took 2 courses with him last year and I have since taken many PSYC courses with other profs but Dr. Lam is truly something else. He explains complex concepts with amazing examples that will stick with you. Exams are extremely difficult but at the end can be rewarding if you study. I would take all my courses with him if I could. Amazing prof.
Much like the post below from Apr 23 that gave him a mediocre review, mine is along the same lines. Dr. Lam is very accommodating and caring; however his exams are overly complicated and each question is quite ambiguous. All questions are application based and you feel rushed throughout due to all of the above, 2 of the above etc. I would avoid!!
Brutal prof if you're looking to get a good grade. Gives 0 practice material for exams then come exam time, questions are unclear. It's almost like he purposely wants you to pick the wrong answer with how vague each question is. IMO one of the worst ones out there at UBC PSYC, avoid at all costs or prepare to be frustrated after every exam with him
Super interesting and was still great online after corona started. really wished i could have told him how great class was - i learned a lot
Dr. Lam was super accommodating during COVID and I really liked how the class was structured -- with optional papers & discussion posts to reduce the weight of midterms. Tests are difficult, but that's to be expected considering they were open-book online. That being said, I still think they were fair, and he'd scale up if the average was too low.
Nice prof. Extremely caring and accommodating. Decent lectures. Really challenging exams (almost all questions are conceptual application questions with super confusing choices)
Had Dr. Lam for online 101/102, he was a great and effective prof. Super clear and informative in his lectures if you're paying attention. Posts lecture slides before his lectures so you should read them beforehand. Take detailed notes of what he says in his lectures. You have to actually understand his taught concepts to do well on his exams.
A literal gem and so caring and thinks of his students needs
Dr. Lam gives some tough tests, but if you study well you will be fine. Optional assignments are not worth it in my opinion, as the TA's mark pretty tough and grading criteria is ambiguous. Stick to exams and mandatory paper and you will be fine. Dr. Lam is a kind individual and his lectures are informative, would recommend taking this course
Professor Lam is so nice! He makes time for students and when I was having a hard time during the term he was so helpful and supportive. Great professor
Lam is one of my favourite profs because this teaching style is straightforward. He posts slides before class, a study guide, and has flexible grading which is extremely helpful and valuable. Some people find exams tough but if you understand the content you should be fine. I avoided the optional written assignments as TAs are hit or miss.
Dr. Lam is a really kind prof! His teaching style is very straightforward which makes material easy to understand. The learning objectives help a lot. Tests were a bit tricky but open book. He was very accommodating to deadline extensions etc. and make the course flexible if wanted to attend online. Just wish he gave final paper example.
A really caring professor who was super approachable and encouraging of discourse and any questions we had. He was one of the nicest profs I've ever had. He taught in a very straightforward manner and made the course interesting, fun and enjoyable!
Professor Lam's really wonderful. He teaches in a super clear and straightforward manner. The class itself is really just slides everyday, but he makes it interesting and it's clear he cares for his students. I hope to take another class with him soon.
Love Marky Mark!
Best course I took this semester. Super chill guy. His lectures are very fun and engaging and his course overview, including grading expectations, is clear. It does take a bit of studying to be successful in his class though.
If youre scared for psyc217, Mark is perfect. His lectures make so much sense and he explains well. One of his long time TAs was extremely knowledgeable and supportive. Midterms are always scary but if you understand the concepts then they will be easy. Go to class, be a good lab partner, and this will be the best required psyc class you ever had
Prof was super fun and engaging, although the exams were slightly harder.
I was honestly kind of worried about taking research methods, but the course became one of my favorites. He is amazing at explaining concepts and breaks things down so that the hardest parts of the course are easier to grasp. A wonderful professor who is very straightforward and caring - I am now taking PSYC 322 with him.
Dr. Lam is so understanding and caring. Lectures are interesting and engaging. He posts the slides so its easy to catch up on notes. When I was failing the class, Lam took the time out of his day to send me a email asking if everything was alright and if I needed any support. If you had a choice for anyone as your Psych prof, please choose Dr. Lam
If you take psych 322 do not do the discussion post part as it is optional. TA's mark those harshly and don't leave feedback on how to improve. Lam is a good professor. TA's don't mark fairly on short discussions post/ replies or reply to emails when you ask about how you could improve on them. Great prof tho.
Dr. Lam was my first UBC professor and I am so happy he was my first professor. Dr. Lam is an amazing teacher who is supportive and encouraging and always pushes you to be better. His lectures are interactive, interesting and immersive. If anyone is contemplating taking a psych course with Dr. Lam, do it.
Although the lectures were fun and engaging, my primary issue with this class is that the exams were fairly difficult to crack and there were no resources at all apart from the textbook to help study for the exams. The weekly inquizitives were not at all similar, in style or difficulty, to the actual exam questions.
Out of all the upper level professors that I've had at UBC, his lectures were the best. They were clear and concise, and by far he writes the best exams. He doesn't trick you, and all the questions are stated clearly without unnecessary text that could throw you off. I liked that he only used 1-3 and not 5-6 names in his exam questions.
Dr. Lam is amazing, he helped me outside class, answered all my questions and emails promptly and always gave study guides and held Q&A sessions before every exam.
Dr. Lam is really caring and understanding, and the expectations of this course were really reasonable. I found the content to be a bit surface level but that could just be because I had previously taken PSYC 314 which had a lot of overlap. The papers and discussion posts are REALLY hard to do well on but they're all optional except 1 paper
Dr. Lam's lectures are the best: not only funny but also informative. He is able to break down concepts and provide examples and real life applications. His tests are a lil bit hard but stylistically consistent. Dr. Lam is definitely my favourite prof and I have nothing negative to say about him. Note to get A+: focus on lecture content, less txtbk
Dr. Lam's lectures were really fun and engaging. I took his classes to see if PSYC was for me, and while I don't like the subject itself, I really enjoyed his classes. I personally found the tests quite challenging and found it difficult to relate the questions back to actual material studied in class or the textbook.
mark has engaging lectures and highlights relevant information for real-life application. i feel like i'm better prepared for growing older. midterms aren't too bad, the mc can be tricky but you can pass with lecture-only and do very well if you also read the textbook. the final paper is rough. do not do optional assignments - TAs grade rough.
Dr. Lam was amazing & had the most structured course I've ever been in. Assignment instructions were so detailed and informative that I never struggled with the 'how to do' part. Before all midterms and the final he released a very helpful study guide that made studying less stressful. Honestly, 11/10. If you are scared of 217, take it with him.
Mark Lam is one of the best professors I've ever had at UBC. He is hilarious and is great at explaining the course material thoroughly. The exams could be a bit tricky, but the practice exams, weekly inquisitives, and Q&A sessions made it easily manageable. I would only tell you not to take his class, so that I can take your spot instead!
Mark is a very nice guy and his lectures are very nice. However, his exams are very hard. The multiple choices are always tricky and the open response questions are unpredictable since he doesn't post any practice exams. Nice prof but really hard exams.
Dr. Lam is amazing!! Participation is necessary as he takes iClickers each class but his lectures are fun and engaging so its worth it. His exams are very hard but manageable if you go to class and read the textbook. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. I highly recommend taking psyc with him!
amazing lecturer. uses great examples to teach concepts so you will remember better.
Mark is a great prof! his lectures are interesting and engaging and he gives us time to participate. he's a super fair marker, and has 4 exams (which i liked) and the questions were fairly easy if you read the notes and textbook. he gives 2 no questions asked 4 day extensions as well as an optional assignment to boost your mark.
Really sweet prof, definitely feel like he genuinely cares about his students!
His classes are very engaging, but sadly it's all about science there are way too many detailed things and terms to memorize for exams. There's an i-clicker every class so make sure you join every class. As an international student, I was struggling with the amount of reading and the wording on exams, so be careful when you're reading questions.
I cannot praise Dr Lam enough. He is peak asian dad without the generational trauma in his teaching methods. Exams are non cumulative and final paper was reasonable, lectures recorded. If he taught more courses I would take them in a heartbeat. Made me interested in developmental psyc
Dr. Lam never dismissed the questions students asked (even if they seemed simple). Course had a clear grading criteria as long as you communicate with the TA. Tests were MC and possible to score high A+ on, but you HAVE to study the lecture AND text extensively! The textbook and lectures overlapped, but additional reading of text was def necessary.
Dr. Lam is a great professor and is passionate about the material. He's very understanding and empathetic. He has an option to use a four day extension no questions asked on two bigger assignments. There are clicker questions every class that he uses for attendance, which counts for 3% of the total grade. Highly recommend!
the lectures were vague, too much time given on a single topic at times and rushing through the rest. always started the class saying lets go, got lots of things to cover, we are somehow behind the schedule always. would not recommend!!!
Mark was a fun prof, and was easy to talk to about the material. I didn't have the best time throughout the class but that was mostly due to the PSYC217 material more than him. He's good at simplifying concepts and is very sweet, but isn't always the most engaging in class. Not my favourite prof I've ever had but I'd take another class with him :)
Really kind and always answers questions in class. Really generous by giving a 4-day-no-questions-asked extension to the larger written assignments. Expect the exams to be pretty hard but that's just the nature of this course. Found the exams to be very textbook heavy so I'd recommend reading it over focusing on just the lecture materials.
Prof Lam is engaging and fair. Exams are reasonable if you do the readings. The optional paper assignments can be tricky, so focus on the core course work. For extra study prep, try using Unstuck AI alongside the textbook.
Nice guy, records his lectures. My biggest complaint is that he only teaches like 1/5th of what's on the exams and expects you to teach yourself the entire textbook. Genuinely so frustrating when you read it, create thorough notes based off of it, but still struggle on the exams because of questions on very specific sentences in the book.
Mark Lam is definitely a great professor so; however, each of his lectures barely scratches the surface for the content for his exams. His office hours explanation for the answers on his MT are also because "even though everything else is correct, he feels that this specific answer are the most correct" without further explanation.
Don't get me wrong, I hated 217 with a burning passion, but Mark somehow made this class bearable. His lectures were great and the content was easier to absorb. He is also really kind and accommodating, which I appreciated because this class stressed me tf OUT. If you have to take PSYC217, I definitely recommend taking it with him!
Good course, good guy. Well organized and entertaining. Fair grader and overall not too stressful.
Best prof I've had, he's so caring towards his students, hilarious, gives dad energy. Expectations are clear and he always does Q&A before tests. Lectures are actually enjoyable, he's my goat.
I loved how organized this course was from start to finish - all assignments have detailed rubrics and exam study guides are provided. Dr. Lam is very nice over email and welcomes questions during class. Lectures are all recorded and slides are posted. You have to study the textbook to do well!
Great person, good proff. His lectures are good. His tests are really hard though. Multiple choice but the options can be very confusing if you did not study well. There were options for the multiple choice questions were very similar and seemed like. Make sure you read the textbook.
I liked him but the course was just a little rough for me. I think his teaching style works for some and not for others, but get ready to do a lotta reading. He is very good at explaining concepts and will help you out if you go to ask him directly.
he's a great guy, very caring, understanding, gives awesome asian dad vibes and LISTENS. however I didn't really enjoy this course all that much because the lectures can be dry at times. grading for assignments had also been quite unpredictable. his exams are pretty hard and you need to know the textbook VERY well to score high. not my cup of tea.
Dr. Mark Lam is one of the best professors on campus! He gives really good examples and explains concepts in a way that it is easy to understand. He assigns optional assignments that lets you up your grade. His exams can be confusing but if you focus and listen during class you will be fine. I honestly wished he was my professor for every course!
Mark genuinely cares about his work and his students, and always stuck around after class. He can move a little fast, which was a bit difficult during more challenging units, but he encourages questions. Read the textbook! Iclicker questions, two non-cumulative midterms, and a cumulative final. I really enjoyed the research poster presentation day!
