Egotistical
Instead of ENG-101, it should be Phislosophy-490!
Even though his class was hard, I liked his teaching style. I thought he was very helpful with any questions you had and cared about the student.
Prof. Lencho teaches, among other things, Linguistics-not an easy subject. He, however, is an extremely good teacher and is very willing to help outside of class. I took him for 2 classes and firmly believe the problem lies with lazy students (see below).
I took one course with him and he is HARD. I worked for his class just about as much as I did for the rest of my classes that semester combined. I say that and I'm an honor student. HE IS HARD SO DON'T BLAME IT ON THE STUDENTS! (SEE BELOW)
The worst class. Totaly ego maniac, megalomaniac, teaches philosophy, not english. And try, just try to learn english.... he's an ass.
It is a hard class because he does deal with philosophy that makes you think about your Quality of Life. Its actually a good thing because it can help you become a better person I feel like that is his real goal.
Lencho's classes are hard but he knows his stuff. I was overly annoyed with the lazy students in my class who not come prepared but would continue to rip on Lencho for being hard.
His classes are just like another philosophy course and some of the things he talks have nothing to do with the class.
I took linguistics and regretted it forever. Most boring class of my college career, plus it was incredibly hard. He is egotistical and does not explain things well.
Do not take gened with lencho/collins. This is more of a philosophy class. You can get an easier grade with someone else. Material is nonsense and not useful for future. Hard graders, with weird grading system.
i was very excited when i first took his class b/c he seemed to be enthuastic and a good teacher however as the course went on his directions became very unclear and essay topics were never explained even when we asked him about it. his quizzes are all matter of a opinion and are never fully covered. his teaching style is unique and very confusing.
He understands everything. As for his students...
Material is very difficult to understand in the way he wants you to
Kind of a Hippie
Likes Pheadrus way too much!!!
I had him for History of Language, and it was the worst class I have taken at UWW. He gave us NO instruction, and the class is student lead. Its a very hard subject, and he gives you NO help at all. Don't take him for this class, wait for someone else or be prepaired for a bad grade.
An amazing professor--if you look at everything OBJECTIVELY.Teaching style is different but gets you THINKING(why else would you take a class?).Take him as a professor and enbrace and question what he has to say. Quality? It exists. He understands it and you will too.Your understanding may be different from his, but it is YOUR growth that matters.
Hard course material, but thuroughly explained and well thought-out teaching method.
This is the entry level English class at UWW, but was more like a Philosophy class. He uses the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance to teach it, but doesn't really explain anything. I think he lives by this book and thinks of this class as a personal dedication to Persig (the author of ZAMM). I learned nothing in this class.
Not an easy course, but well worth the effort. Dr. Lencho has high expectatons but is always willing to meet with a student to discuss material and expound upon it. I would even go so far as to say the discussions were fun. My only complaint would be that he never sang to our class.
An interesting class, but not bad. Focused on what it means to be an American, and gave leeway when it came to paper topics. Overall an interesting course, though he doesn't normally teach it.
As an introductory course it covers all the basics. The periodical quizes only helped students to better understand the material, and were not difficult if the material was thoroughly read.
Good, solid class. Quizzes were helpful, and most of grade based on participation.
Good teacher, really nice, sometimes very confusing, hard exams!!!
He is a hard teacher. You read this dumb book all semester and it is really confusing. I would not recomend this teacher at all!!!
great teacher, difficult subject... enjoyed class
I am absolutely loving his class. It is definitely out of the box and very philosophical. He will encourage you to think and try to find a deeper meaning in the book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I will remember this class for the rest of my life. I wish I could have him for every English class.
I honestly thought he was an awesome professor. He always helped out when you asked. Although the book we read was a tad confusing at times, it turns out to be really interesting. His class is very philosophical, but he is a Doctor of Philosophy so it makes sense. If you read and think out of the box you will do great!
Having had a higher-level linguistics course with 19 students, I found him to be helpful and an excellent discussion leader. Though it could get complicated, I looked forward to going to class. The technical papers were brutal and caused nuclear fallout the next day, but I'd recommend him for higher-level linguistics if you?re up for it.
This was a great class, though it was difficult. My grade, a B-, was the second highest in the class. It was based off of total points, though, so really our grades were our responsibilities. Though it was demanding, I learned a great deal and thoroughly enjoyed the course.
The material was SO DIFFICULT, I dont recommend taking the class if you arent up for a difficult, long book that will take the entire semester. He is a great teacher and a good person but the material is just really difficult.
We read only one book the entire year but he analyzes the book and really lets you think. He is a smart and cool laid back guy. I don't like english because it's all grammar. But Lencho's class was more of a philosophy class and you were graded on your opinions rather than grammar.
I recommend reading the texgt book while he lectures, DO THE DISCUSSIONS, GO TO CLASS, you will struggle because the material is difficult and the way he preses it has not been helpful for me. I would have choosen a different road if I knew this class would be so irritating.
This is the best class I have taken my freshman year. You only read one book throughout the semester that is difficu lt but you talk through it each week. You take a quiz on the material and get to retake it if you participate. Papers you write are easily explained. Easy class if you put the effort!
This class is only difficult if you don't read the material or turn up for class. The quizzes are a little hard. if you participate in the quiz discussions on a monday, you qualify for a retake. You are graded on quizzes (150 points) class participation (75 points) and essays (120 points). Lencho has a laid back and positive attitude in his class.
EXCELLENT professor. The class is a little challenging, but it is very easy to get a good grade due to his willingness to help you/give you extra credit. He provides a refreshing/abstract perspective on course material and definitely helped me improve my writing skills. TAKE HIM! You won't regret it. He's really funny, too.
He is a nice guy and is willing to help with anything. You only ready one book the whole semester and that's what the course is based around. However the quizzes on the book are pretty hard. There are like 4 or 5 papers that are only like 500 words each. Overall it was a good class, just a little challenging.
Makes you take a different approach to writing and comprehension, challenges you to take a different prospective. I loved his class and ZAMM was a really good tool to use in Freshman English
HORRIBLE. Take a different teacher. Am a 4.0 student and had to drop because his class is made to be impossible. Does not care about his students, just wants to boast about everything he knows. Even if you have to withdraw, highly recommend getting out
Lencho is the worst professor I have ever had in 3 years at UWW. He quizzes on the most inconsequential material and does so in a nearly impossible manner. He expects everyone in the class to be linguistic experts on a near PhD scale, all while barely helping you comprehend the material. Good luck, his class is like walking into Little Big Horn.
The only way you have a chance in his class is if you show up all the time and study a ridiculously long time. His quizzes are designed to be ridiculously difficult and the only way you stand a chance is if you seek help outside of class.
Lencho is a good man, and is understanding if you are having problems in the class. He has an extra credit assignment in the class worth up to 25 extra credit points that can help boost your grade. That being said, he isn't the best teacher. He teaches at a level and speed of a grad. class and expects his students to keep up. Don't miss a class
Intro to Language Study is an extremely difficult class. The tests are nearly impossible. That being said, Dr. Lencho is a very nice guy and offers a lot of extra credit. He doesn't want you to fail, he just has no concept of how difficult the material is.
Lencho's great. People are commenting that his clasess are hard, but they're very basic. If people think this is hard, linguistics isn't for them, but that doesn't mean Lencho's a bad teacher. His teaching is great, and he covers and tests the important material. Don't want to go to class? Quit college.
Mark Lencho is by far the worst professor I've ever had. For a 200 level English class, he graded like this was a master's course. Whenever I asked for help, he would give unclear answers, leaving me more confused. For each quiz we took, the class average would be a C or lower. Do no take this class if you don't have to!
While people have said this prof is awful, I would disagree. He does give a lot of work, but he's always there to help you! He always gives extra credit every week and multiple tries on tests! I learned so much from this one class. He truly cares about the students and wants to see all of us grow as scholars. It's tough love!
Way too hard for a Gen Ed class. Material will not help you at all down the road. Unless you are into Philosophy and Metaphysics, do not take this class.
Mark Lencho is a great professor and knows what he's talking about. The quizzes are online and very hard. They're very detail oriented so read closely. The final you can used your book/notes. Discussion posts required. Books are very dry and hard to get into unless you're into Metaphysics.
If you do the work, really focus & work hard on the quizzes, and do the extra-credit every week - you'll be fine. Difficult quiz questions, but final exam is optional based on bi-weekly quiz scores.
Participation is huge. The book he used for the entire semester was really boring and hard to understand. He has online quizzes every week and they are very hard, you need to read and understand everything in the chapter to pass them. He gives extra credit but you have to earn it.
Lencho is a nice guy, and can be understanding of you come up to him with questions. With that being said, I do believe that his grading system is quite difficult. His lectures are informative, but he expresses his knowledge in a very monotone manner which makes it difficult to keep focus. He is not the ideal man for the way I learn.
Mr. Lencho has good intentions, but his quizzes and assignments are based largely on his opinions. When I say this, I mean that a lot of his quiz questions are opinion based. That may seem great, but the problem comes with the fact that he puts multiple answers that are correct down as options and only has the one he agrees with most be correct.
Professor Lencho is a nice guy, but that doesn't necessarily equate to being a great professor. He gives good feedback and encourages conversation about the books you read, but his lectures are not very interesting. It can be hard to stay focused in his class. If you choose to take him, make sure to keep up with reading and participate in class.
This is the most intellectual man I have ever met. He is an amazing professor! If I could take another class with him I would. You read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance for the class. Read it carefully and take the quizzes. His quizzes can be hard, but you can earn a second chance to take it and if you get a 10/10 u really earn 20/10
Lencho's class is based off of quizzes that you get two chances at. Don't let that fool you because they're tough- take them in groups and use the book. Pay attention in lecture and try to understand and ask questions in class the day after you take the quiz. End of the semester project isn't hard at all, pretty easy grader on that too.
This was the WORST professor I have EVER had. He's a cool guy but an awful professor. Do not,I repeat do not take his class. you will read 1 book all semester and will write countless essays on the same stupid book. I almost fall asleep in every single class of his. you will have quizzes damn near everyday that the class average is about a 4/10.
Lencho is a great guy. Yeah sometimes he tends to drag on about a certain subject and his bi weekly quizzes tend to be difficult but you get two chances at them for a reason after the first attempt he goes over any questions students have in class and will answer any questions we have. Not a super easy course by any means but it's manageable
Mark is a great guy. He's passionate about his students, but I didn't learn from his teaching style. The quizzes were confusing; I failed almost every one (and I'm a straight A English major). His feedback is unhelpful. He is very encouraging and nice, but I didn't learn anything in this course. Never told us our grades. Online discussions.
Like many others have said, Mark is a great person, but the only problem anyone really has with his classes are that the quizzes are completely unclear. Class averages are low and he won't tell you the answers, but if you do them in groups, you have a better chance at passing.
You read two books throughout the semester that are more difficult to read but somewhat interesting. You take weekly quizzes with two tries, if you score a 100% you get 3 bonus points added to that quiz grade. Quizzes can be tough, but you go over them in class before the second try. Participation matters, it is a third of your grade!!!
I can't even explain the hatred I feel towards this class. It is SO BORING. The things brought up to discuss in class don't make sense at all, I don't see how things connect. You take a quiz on the book, 1/2 of it is based on perception but there's a yes/no answer. In class, you talk about the quiz, but only 4 questions are discussed & not answered
The in class discussions had nothing to do with the assignments. The books being read were boring and class participation is a must if you want to pass. The quizzes were all based on interpretation but had right or wrong answers. Going over the quizzes in class was pointless since there was 100 questions and he only goes over 4.
(Summer201) Scheduled "help" sessions (which were extra credit) ONLY during work hours. He phrased his quiz questions oddly; when given the answer he asked for, he said he didn't mean the question like that and marked it wrong. It also took me over 2-3 hours to finish each quiz and never got higher than a C+. Managed to pass class w/ end-project.
Prof Lencho assigns many novels to read. He is very lecture heavy and does not discuss relevant information. He is very monotone and boring with his lectures. He takes a very long time to put grades in as well so I did not know my grade until the end of the semester.
2nd worst professor I've ever had. I feel bad saying so, because he seems like a really nice guy personally. Clearly a serious expert in content, but awful content delivery. If class average on every quiz all semester are never above a D : it's not the students, it's you. 100% monotone lecture, no amount of caffeine can save you. Take anyone else!
Dr. Lencho is a very nice guy; The material of his class however, is very boring. Grades were based off three books which were fairly long. Two books were graded by weekly discussion posts, the third was graded on a 20q quiz based on that weeks reading. Readings were around 70 pages per week. Didn't take a single note, class was always discussion.
DON'T TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE TAKING OTHER CLASSES If you cant dedicate every waking second of your existence to this class, do not take him. Do not take it unless everything you've ever thought about is metaphysics. Forced to take him because of schedule, would not recommend. Grading is all over the place. Have not learned a single thing in this class
Lencho is nice but boring and monotonous. Coursework: weekly discussions (be enlarging), bi-weekly quizzes (two chances - you fail the first one every time btw - ask a lot of questions the next class), weekly extra credit (but you must work for it), attendance required, 1 paper, final exam (optional - quiz-based), JUST TEACH YOURSELF THE SUBJECT.
Dr. Lencho is amazing. If you put in the work and effort into discussion posts and class participation, you will be a-okay. He also does amazing lectures. There are so many resources that he'll give for you to succeed. The extra credit opportunities are countless. I will definitely recommend taking him if you're willing to put in the work!
DO NOT take this class with him. You read 3 confusing books that are super long, lots of readings. You can't ever get 100% on the discussion posts. All he does is lecture and its very boring. Takes forever to grade and doesn't answer emails! Overall, very boring and hard class to take especially for a gened class. DO NOT TAKE!
During the COVID-19 pandemic he forced us to come to class and did not allow for a virtual experience. He does not respond to emails or comments you make to him on Canvas. Outside of class he is completely unreachable. You spend the whole term reading one book and have a quiz on it every week, as well as an essay. Ridiculous expectations. Bad prof.
I took this class online during COVID, but he is hands down the WORST professor I've had in my 3 years of college. I would email him and I have yet to receive a response from him. He finally told me that he doesn't check his email?!? He is such a hard grader and the quizzes are impossible. I worked so hard and got nothing in return. 0/10 recommend
I took this course online because of COVID, and it was the hardest class I have ever taken. He never responded to my emails or my comments on Canvas, and there was extra credit work that I did and never received credit for. He is both incredibly vague and the toughest grader that I've ever had, which was the worst combination. Do not take him!
Professor Lencho has clear grading criteria. Although, he is a very tough grader. He makes you WORK for your grade! Almost impossible to get a perfect score on assignments. However, he gives a ton of extra credit in the class. He doesn't answer his emails and the final exam is optional. Get an A by putting a lot of time and effort into assignments!
I have never felt the need to submit on this website but after taking this class, I feel obligated too. Hands down the worst professor I have had. Impossible to contact outside of class, and had no idea how to work canvas.
Best professor I've ever had. Sure, you have to work for your grade, but ... that's the point of school. I wish he taught more classes!
I have taken all of his classes. This class was really interesting and different from my friends' classes with the same number. There's a lot to wrap your mind around, but it's totally worth it.
Unclear instructions but an excessively strict grader. Don't bother trying to reach him outside of class (he never responded to emails my classmate and I sent). Quizzes were unclear and unnecessarily difficult, and I'm someone who'd never gotten a grade below A. Some work was just never graded, even when I emailed him. Worst teacher I've ever had.
He was a great professor. He inspired me to study linguistics. Unfortunately, I had to transfer to another school for it, but it's totally worth it. Was the material difficult? Sure. But it was manageable. The people who didn't like the class probably didn't study hard enough. *shrug emoji*
He was my favorite professor, hands down. This class was intense, but worth it!
This was a topics class and was super interesting. I could tell he put a lot of work into it and wish I could take it again.
This was an introductory course that taught me a ton about language and linguistics. I still use what I learned in this class in my everyday life.
The book for this class required a lot of close attention, but it was really interesting. I really liked the online and in-class discussions.
This was a really fun writing class. I learned a lot, and he let us choose our paper topics, so I felt very engaged in and excited about the process.
