I still can't fingure out how I feel about this class. You read a ton, and the books are pretty good. You don't write much, but that comes back to bite you come grading time because you do so little. Mark's a cool guy, but weird teaching style. Make sure to read, and go to class most of the time
The class is weird. Most of the books we read were good and I enjoyed reading them. Not many assignments so if you miss one it can be a problem. He grades papers fairly easy though.
If you are truly interested in English, you definitely need to take Lester's classes. At the 300 level and above I think he focuses a lot on postmodern philosophy and theory. Very difficult material, but grading isn't too tough, and you'll take away a lot from the class. Just how it should be.
Really difficult material, but he made it engaging. Easy grader and very approachable and personable. I enjoyed the class and I would definitely take one from him again.
I agree with the poster who said that Mark's lecturing style is weird. I don't think I've ever had a professor who said so little using SO many words. Even when you ask for clarification you might as well be reading a stereo manual. Other profs in the department handle similar material better.
lester combines wit and intelligence to create a very worthwhile class. in every one of his classes two or three students love him, many are undecided, and the rest complain that he is hard to understand. the complaining students are generally the ones that cannot process the challenging material.
I loved this class. It was very interesting and the discussions were always amazingly informative. Mark is a very nice man and you could always tell how passionate about english he is. We watched a lot of movies and different interpretations of shakespeare, which opened my mind a lot. Excellent class and prof!
Wow. This guy is great. His class is easy yet very mentally stimulating. He uses all sorts of examples in class, from film, media, ect, and how they apply to shakespeare. My only complaint would be he writes on the chalk board then rubs his face, giving himself hilarious war-paint-esque marks. Quite distracting, but still hilarious.
WOW this class is BORING. It's easy, but you have to be willing to sit through two hours of this silly little man talking about NOTHING.
I loved this course. Mark Lester is very passionate about the material he presents in class. The way he approaches the material is very interesting as well although sometimes the lectures seem unnecessarily long at the end of they day they have an exellent message. I reccoment taking any course taugh by this prof he's a great guy.
Amazing class, wonderful teacher. His lectures got a little long for me at times; he went off on tangents a few too many times for my taste, but the challenge of the material and the quality of the class discussions he initiated made this class my favorite this quarter. Oh, and those little glasses of his? HOT!
very challanging intellectually, but not a hard grader. very supportive of individual theory
Porfessor Lester is a very enthusiastic individual. I really enjoyed the books we read. He made me look at literature in a whole new light. He does a great job drawing in society, culture, and history in relation to the books we read. If you want a fun and challenging class, this is it!
One of the nicest professors I've ever had, but oh my God I was bored to death in his class.
Go to class. I got good grades on my papers but I just couldn't stand the lectures. He has a slight studder and mumbles at times. He is a very helpful professor though he answered all my questions during his office hours.
A very nice and enthusiastic guy, a very easy grader. At least in my class he took attendance randomly, but I still did very well without going to class very often. Entirely discussion based. Easy assignments. Watched a lot of movie clips. A little dry, but a sincerely nice guy.
A very fascinating class for anyone interested in Shakespeare. Not that hard, he does take attendance on occasion, be sure to read the material.
Brush up on your french critical theorists, boys and girls! This guy will make your brain hurt in a good way. Lecture gets a little scattered at times, but his enthusiasm for what he is teaching is contagious. Friendly, fair, and smart as hell.
Lester is a nice guy, but not a great teacher. It saddens me that I've had Shakespeare butchered for me by this man. The "Time" focus is nonsense -- essentially a 10-week long Easter egg hunt where we reduce works to finding their mentions of time, ignoring their more tangible attributes. Like him as a person. Awful, abstract lectures, wasted TIME.
He's a really nice guy and will help you as much as he can to help you get the grade you want.
Dr. Lester is the quintessence of dude. He is chill as hell, the kind of professor who's hella qualified but you'd have NO idea. He's really good at what he does. He's into sexual deviance, but if you get over that little character quirk, he's AWESOME. Great class.
To be honest, you can not onyl pass this class, but get an A just by reading sparknotes and never opening your textbook. I have gotten As on every assignment and not read a word of the plays. He is very smart but goes off on tangents. He's funny and approachable. he takes attendance daily, but is chill and lets you text openly in class.
He was pretty awesome. Not much work for the class, even midterm and final were easy! Fun! I recommend him!
I was struck on the first day of our class as to how passionate Lester is about the material we covered. His enthusiasm did often lead to tangents, but they were always enjoyable. Make sure you show up to class, participate in discussion, and try to figure out how to make your writing what he likes and you will get a great grade in this one!
Dr. Lester is knowledgeable about the subject, but many did not understand the material. He mumbles, doesn't write on the board, hard to take notes from, goes off on tangents that rock the already unstable foundation of the course, didn't mention needing philosophy background, chose a book way above course number. Difficult during office hours to.
Very passionate about whatever subject he is teaching. I have taken 3 courses from him ending with Eng 313. The class itself is very flawed and should not reflect too much on the prof. He may stutter or mumble, but that does not take away from what he is actually saying. Actually do the reading and participate in discussion and you will do well.
Smart guy, horrible communicator. Most disorganized class I have ever taken. Got papers back a month later. Rambled instead of lectured. This is the most difficult class I have ever taken NOT becuase of the material, but because of Lester's inability to organize the class and his thoughts. If you like direction in a class, choose another prof.
Very passionate and intelligent teacher. You can tell this guy loves english and his enthusiasm really improved the class. I've seen some comments about him being late handing papers back (which is true) but he is totally overworked (for being such a good teacher). Easily one of my favorite teachers at WWU.
Prof Lester is extremely passionate about English and you can tell he's trying to encourage others to love the subject as well. His essay assignments weren't all that clear, so it took a while to understand what he wanted. Also, the book choices during my quarter were TERRIBLE, so I recommend checking the book list before registering, if possible.
Lester is very passionate about literature and is good at sparking discussion by asking interesting questions. But his grading on papers is ridiculous and unhelpful. He wants you to word things HIS way. And the reading he chooses to assign is HORRIBLE.
I literally only read the sparknotes to all the plays and got an A-. Such an easy class, and Lester is really passionate about literature in general so it wasn't as boring as it could have been. I like Shakespeare a lot but since engaging myself wasn't required for success, I slacked and was bored. You'll get out of this class what you put into it.
Be prepared for god-awful book choices, mumbling, epic rants of no relevance, and focus on the city and the city alone. Any interpretation of the text not focused on the city is irrelevant in his eyes.
Mark Lester is amazing. I loved the required readings(most of which I had never read/heard of). Lester is the kind of professor that drives you to go to class just because you respect him so much. Course theme="the city". He encourages his students to relate the texts to everyday encounters as well as film, poetry, music, and other artistic mediums
Dr. Lester is a nice man and has interesting things to say most the time, but this class was hands-down a snoozefest.I went everyday and tried to pay attention but only because a large part of the grade is based on attendance and participation. If you want an easy GUR this class is probably a good choice, but I'd look elsewhere if you want to learn
Course topic - Narrative Consciousness. This course was extremely challenging as far as the material. You read things like Beckett, Kafka, Lispector, and some shorter articles by the likes of Freud and Nietzsche. Despite this, Lester is a very fair grader and an all around nice, intelligent man. Requires brain power, but very rewarding.
Mark is excellent. The texts he chooses are very thought provoking and require a lot of thought, but if you go to him with your ideas he will be more than willing to help you out. Loves when students pop by his office so he will give great feedback if asked. Overall fair grading and the class is basically group discussion based.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Insightful, analytical and deep in his approach to narrative consciousness.
One of the worst lit classes I have taken. Lecture was all ramble, hardly any significance. He's a very intelligent man, but most of it fell on deaf ears as it was so dull. I would recommend to NOT take a class with him.
Lester's class is entirely lecture based. The class tends to drone on. He takes attendance daily. There are two essay tests that are not too difficult, 2 movie reviews, and a 15 minute performance. I found this class to be boring, but I am not avid about Shakespeare. This is a relatively easy class to get a B in. Lester is a nice guy.
I learned absolutely nothing in this class. Worst prof I've had in any school (I've attended 4 universities in 4 different states) because he cannot communicate ideas or his feelings properly and will not even respond to students outside of class. Received a rude email months later. Maybe just a bad qtr. If not, he shouldn't be teaching.
Mark Lester has so much to offer. My favorite english classes at Western have been administered by him. He is very available to students especially if they are willing to explore subjects in depth. I relearned how to read in his classes. Lots of thick substantial insight, very worthwhile discussions.
This class almost made me change my major away from English. Lester's way of teaching is so dull and tedious, I thought about dropping the class right away. Lectures are thought provoking, but contain little significance and I took nothing away from the class. Grades are based solely on essays based on impossible texts. Avoid if possible.
Lester is obviously a very intelligent professor, but I felt that the discussions/class activities we did weren't as helpful as I had hoped. He's a little harsh when it comes to grading papers as well...felt a little in the dark in this class. I still enjoyed having him as a professor, nevertheless.
He's a smart professor however I found his class to be much harder than I expected. He is unclear with what he wants and doesn't give direct prompts for his essays, making it confusing to know what he's looking for. The ENTIRE class focuses on "consciousness". Every essay is about it and it's talked about every class, which may seem easy but isn't.
Lester is a nice guy, but it's true that he grades hard and is extremely unclear with prompts for essays. The class is based mostly off of three essays throughout the quarter, and they aren't easy. The reading is somewhat interesting, but the discussions (which were everyday) would put you to sleep. It's a mediocre class.
You do not have to be a huge fan of Shakespeare to take this course. Mark Lester is a wonderful professor who's enthusiasm about the subject made this class worthwhile. I read the sparknotes versions of the texts and passed with flying colors, however he does call on students to read passages from the text aloud in class.
He goes on long rants that can get a bit annoying. He's very sweet though and the class discussions are very interesting. He makes a lot of corrections/marks on the essays, but he doesn't take many points off.
ONLY TAKE THIS INTRO TO SHAKESPERE CLASS WITH MARK LESTER. This class is unbelievably easy and there is no need to buy the text book. He takes attendance but its not hard to sit in class. Only grades or assignments are 2 play reviews and a take home over a weekend two page double spaced paper on 2 of 5 prompts for the midterm and final. ACGM Check
Lester is ridiculously knowledge regarding literature in general. Kinda tough class but he's the man
I'd highly recommend Lester for anyone who's taking this class to declare an English major. He's a talkative guy, but very passionate about the subject and gives lots of constructive criticism on essays. Grades are based on 3 essays, participation, and a portfolio due at the end of the quarter. It's not an easy A, but the hard work pays off.
Take Intro to Shakespeare with Mark! He takes attendance so you have to go to the lectures, but it's an easy way to boost your grade. You don't have to read the assigned plays because he talks about it during class. The midterm and the final are really easy. He takes a long time to grade the papers though. But I really liked this class!!!
Second time taking a class with Mark, first class was English 214 (Intro to Shakespeare). Great professor, super passionate about English and really cares about the well being of his students. This course was Literature and the Law, a senior seminar and absolutely fascinating. If you have a chance to take a class with Mark, do it!!
I can tell Mark is really passionate about the subject he teaches, but it's really difficult to stay awake during his two hour long lectures. It's pretty hard to understand what he's saying because he goes off topic a lot. In short, any class he teaches is easy. No exams. The midterm and final are take-home short essays.
Professor Lester is too smart for his own good and lectures the whole class period, it is hard to focus because he doesn't make sense when he lectures. The lectures last all class period and basically he just goes in circles with his talking. I wouldn't recommend for this class specifically.
Lester is clearly passionate about his class, but I was expecting more British Literature as the class suggests, we read maybe one that was relevant. There are no lectures, more like class discussion. The books are very dense and boring, and the prompts are easy. He often rambles on, videos are unrelated and boring. The class is quite boring.
He enjoys the topics he teaches, but he isn't necessarily the best at teaching them. Class time is split between lecture and discussion. I find his tone of voice to be boring, especially when he goes on tangents so it's difficult to pay attention and stay interested, which usually I don't have a problem with.
This class was tedious but a lot of fun. There's a lot of reading to be done, but the books really are interesting. Lester is a bit scatterbrained and sometimes his tangents are confusing. He leads discussions well and is a really nice man who truly cares about his students. Class is based on 4 essays and participation so not too bad.
You learn nothing from his lectures and it's difficult to even know what he's explaining. I hesitate to ask him certain questions because whenever he replies, I don't think he even properly answers it. He starts talking about one thing and then somehow moves on to something off-topic. The essays are doable, but requires you to think a lot.
Pretty boring but not difficult or tedious. He's a nice guy and grades fairly with good feedback. He plays videos and movies in class sometimes.
Mark is a great professor. He speaks pretty softly and quick, but he is so passionate about everything that he teaches. He's compassionate and kind, so be honest with him about any struggles you're having and he will do what he can to help.
Lester was a very boring professor, not a lot more to say than that. His lectures felt like they were four hours long, even though they were only 1.5. He speaks softly, and quickly, and I honestly haven't taken much from the class. You can pass without paying any attention whatsoever, and I use the time to do homework for other classes.
His lectures: long, boring, and doesn't make any sense. Discussions were not helpful. His soft speaking makes it difficult to understand what he's even saying. He mumbles often, which is distracting. I honestly learned nothing from his lectures. He hardly ever uses Canvas. His essay prompts are unclear and confusing. Would Not Recommend
I honestly loved Lester! His taste in literature is dark (in a good way) & he was really passionate about each of the books. While he is soft spoken & talks quickly, his lectures weren't too long & the class was primarily discussion based. Essay topics were broad but he's helpful if you ask. He always had us doing fun small projects in class!
He's fineee. A lot of people don't like him, I've heard, but I didn't have a problem with him. The readings were just incredibly boring, and we were basically just graded on attendance, a couple of assignments and two papers. I got an A, though, so no complaints?
Prof. Lester does speak softly & quickly, & I do admit half the time I was lost, but 313 was pretty much my first experience with lit theory & in retrospect, to struggle is to be expected. He knows his stuff and is extremely approachable. His lectures are extremely clever. If you're confused, go to office hours, & if you can't hear, sit closer!
I was really dissapointed when I took this class. Lester's feedback was harsh but not helpful. Once, he gave me a C for my essay and then used a good example paper for the rest of the class. I asked about what I could change in the future and his responses were vague at best. If you're interested in taking his class, don't.
You read 5 plays and spend about 2 weeks on each with a 5 question multiple choice quiz for each. Midterm and final are two, 1 page double spaced papers about his given prompts. Gives great feedback on essays. One 10 minute group presentation on your choice of Shakespeare scene at the end. Must speak in class and participate. Easy A and great prof.
Rambles on and on about things not even related to the books. I don't think I even read one of the assigned books and I got a B. I was excited to take the class but by day two those dreams were shattered. Mumbles a lot and goes off on tangents all the time. Most boring class I ever took.
It is very obvious that Mark wants his students to do well. However, his class can be pretty bland and he counts on the students to continue discussion throughout the whole 2 hour lecture which is not realistic. His grading criteria isn't very clear but he does give good feedback to improve. A lot of tough reading but great group discussion.
I am a huge fan of Shakespeare, but his lectures seemed to go on forever. He is very passionate about the art of Shakespeare, but does not have a clear teaching pattern. It was hard to understand what he wanted from the class.
Course is graded on participation, pop quizzes, a midterm essay and a final essay. The reading is pretty complicated/hard to understand. Mark wants students to figure things out for themselves and tends to not explain things very clearly. You can tell he is very passionate about philosophy, but he is VERY dry. This class is very tough, but do-able.
I took two classes with Mark. The first time I took him, I thought he was boring and monotone. However, he was super sweet and obviously cared a lot about students. He's a really hard grader and don't agree with a lot of his choices, but I keep coming back. Does that make me a masochist? He's one of my favorite teachers because he's so nice, though
Overrall he is not a bad guy and it's not his fault but... almost everyone falls asleep during class. He can go on talking about a certain aspect of a play for 20 minutes that could have been explained in 2 and because the class is 2 hours long twice a week, the only thing making me go is that he takes attendance. Also he gets mad if you get up.
Most disorganized teacher I have ever had. He sits in a chair and rambles on about random stuff for two hours. This is very heavy material, yet he provides no outline or lecture slides. He grades tough, gives no rubric or outline for what he wants in the paper. Doesn't give paper topic until a week before the due date. Do not recommend at all,
I was really excited to learn about Shakespeare, but Mark Lester is the most boring teacher I've ever had. It was hard not to skip every class because he just sits up front talking on and on about certain parts of the plays that could have been summed up very quickly. No slides, no outline. It's just sitting there, barely being able to hear him.
He is a super passionate person but is terrible at communicating via email or canvas. Don;t ever count on a reply. But with that, he is fairly lenient and nice.
Diving headfirst into a pit of needles would be preferable to sitting through his aimless and incomprehensible lectures. Ask him a question and you may as well tune out for twenty minutes because he won't get to the point until then. On top of that, he thinks he is incredibly profound. Tough reading even for an English major with no intro or prep.
He talks a lot during class, to the point where it can get numbing, but hes actually a good prof. Easy A class, but few grades assignments so dont mess them up.
Dry readings that are not explained in much depth in classes. Lectures are super boring and usually just him talking at you for a few hours. Not a super hard professor, but not a good one either
Mark Lester (on zoom he requires cameras on) has a very boring lecture tone and drags on way longer than needed. There are lots of awkward silences as he waits for someone to answer his super long questions and if no one volunteers he'll call out at random. The readings are long and I had no idea what was going on half the quarter. Avoid if you can
don't take this class. doesn't use canvas, your grades will be a mystery all quarter. his lectures are mindnumbingly boring and incomprehensible. he basically just had us read super-dense plays then break off into groups to discuss them, he didnt lead discussion or really try to deepen our understanding of the material. it felt like he didnt try!
Mark is very kind and very passionate about the subject matter. The class readings were very dense and and class lectures at times were a bit long and drawn out. My only true complaint is that grades were not entered gradually throughout the quarter, leaving it until the end which can be a bit stressful.
This dude is so bland that it was almost painful to sit through his lectures, ESPECIALLY over Zoom. I can't tell you how many times I fell asleep while in this class. The concepts were pretty abstract and I found myself confused a lot. Overall not a very memorable class.
Super nice man and gave good feedback on essays, but didn't communicate well over Canvas/didn't communicate changes in the course over Canvas. I wish he explained the readings more but when he lectured it was mostly just confusing and I feel like he didn't fully answer any of my questions. Four assignments the whole quarter.
No online options- even at the height of the Omicron wave
Mark is a very nice guy and the discussions in class were always very interesting, but his class is hard. I had a hard time keeping up with the content and as he did not post anything on canvas, I spent the whole quarter not knowing my grade. Very poor communication on assignments. He's also a tough grader. It is hard to get a good grade on essays.
wouldn't recommend. can't teach the material, can't facilitate discussion of it either, can't establish a curriculum. what he lacks in his teaching he has with enthusiasm for the job and legitimate knowledge of his subject area, but simply showing up with the right attitude is not sufficient to pass as a student, nor is it as an instructor.
i understand the negative reviews for professor lester, but i loved his class. he assigned unique texts and delved super deep into them in lecture. his lectures can be hard to follow, and he honestly ran circles around me intellectually, but i learned sooo much from listening to him. gave super helpful feedback on papers, also very gentle and kind.
The class is graded on 4 large papers with broad prompts about difficult abstract readings. The grading policy was very unclear and he doesn't use canvas. The papers were based on discussions in class which was mostly his ramblings about the readings, it was interesting but hard to understand. There was little curriculum and structure to the class.
He is a super nice guy and has very interesting lectures. This class was graded on only 3 major "papers" and that was basically it. Somewhat easy course. Professor Lester is funny for his age, I wouldn't mind having him again.
The class is easy but he is insufferable as a lecturer. He doesn't post grades on Canvas, so unless you calculate it yourself there's no way of knowing your grade. His lectures are drawn-out tangents, spoken almost too quietly to hear. Requires attendance. Also requires everything to be turned in person and printed out.
