Knew the material inside and out, but occasionally had a difficult time conveying information to students.
I like Dr. Letourneau. His classes are hard, and he is VERY hard to understand, but he is so knowledgable in his field and will go out of his way to help you understand the material if you ask him. He will adapt his program to fit the needs of students.

A really intelligent instructor - almost too smart. At times he was unable to clearly explain the subject matter, but he was always willing to help. Even though there are a lot of assignments they aren't busy work. Everything's set up for your success.
I was surprised how much I liked Dr Letorneau's class. It was fascinating and I he explained very tough material very well. He has a dry sense of humor that is quite funny if you catch it. He is kind and sympathetic. Great guy
Hard class, but worth it(but only if you're into working your butt off).
Very good professor - knows his stuff, but you'll need to work for an A.
Very good professor - the most helpful ever! Knowledgable, but you'll need to work hard to get an A - it is possible though.
The toughest class you'll ever love. There is no other excuse, he is a grammatical sadist. Brilliant and mysterious. He looks strangely Jewish, but I'm pretty sure he was Mormon. Not that that matters, but really, it's always in the back of your mind. I really didn't do that well in his class, but maybe that's because my mind was elsewhere?
Try to avoid taking this guy if you want an easy english class. I did all of my assignments diligently and did what he wanted, but came out with a b minus. He has a monotone voice and will put you to sleep. He is so smart that his vocab is from another world. If you like to take the hard road, take this little stinker. Hardest english class ever.
stay away from this guy at all cost. Trust me
do not take this class!!!!!!!!!!!
Good class. Very focused on writing good arguments. He is intelligent and very logical, and he expects the same from students. You will learn to write/analyze good argumentative papers in this class. I also like how he didn't talk politics or push his own opinions, even though you discuss controversial subjects in class. He can be boring, though.
He expects a lot from his students but the class absolutely opened my mind. I can't believe how much I learned. I would take it again in a heartbeat! He is subtly very funny and cares about students who care about the class. If you enjoy learning new things and are willing to work, take it! I loved it.
He has a low monotone voice and is sooo boring. He loves to hand out his own papers because he thinks he's better than the book. He is not someone you want to take a class from, you will fall asleep he's so dull.
He was horrible and I would never ever ever recommend this guy as a professor. It was not an easy class and I am very upset that I didn't get a passing grade
this professor is perhapes the most intellegent in the English dept. He is very helpful if the student is willing to work and learn. Some say he is hard, but I think that his difficulty level is necessary in order to be able to learn on agenuine manner.
do you want to really learn the principles of grammar and English? If you do then this guy is the best to do so at wsu. He is kind and helpful if you are willing to learn! So, those who say,"he is hard" I say to them, "you make it hard"
Hardest class of my life. I love the subject but just couldn't seem to produce the work he wanted. He's a great guy, but his classes are close to impossible.
This Professor is nice and good natured ,however, is super boring! I had to force myself to go to his class he hands out unneccesary work and expects alot and you have to rewrite papers 2 more times to fix it after you have already written it. Very quiet but very smart. Too smart if I have a say so if your smart than take it from him!
I loved LeTourneau! Yep, the class was hard & I didn't get a great grade but that was my fault. He is genuinely a great guy and VERY willing to help. I love that we talked about politics in class but he never tried to push his own ideas on us. It was more of learning to present an argument than a general english class like I thought but it was fine
This class was miserable! His teaching style was very confusing. He contradicted what was in the book, and his tests were so frustrating! He's a nice guy, but he doesn't explain new concepts well. Don't take this class from him.
Would not recommend
I don?t know if it?s Letourneau or the subject matter that makes linguistics so difficult. However, he?s a really nice guy, and he?ll do what he can to help you. Take good notes as he WILL go over stuff that is not in the text, and keep in mind that some notes are allowed during the tests. Despite it all, it was an incredibly interesting class!
Dr. LeTourneau wasn't my favorite but he was definitely helpful. I took the class in the summer and my class was very small so he always answered questions promptly and responded well to e-mails. I wouldn't suggest anyone to take this class from him but if you do... pay close attention to what he says and take notes.
His bark is worse than his bite. He talks with a very impressive vocabulary and the way he explains things is tough to understand. BUT if you ask for clarification he will gladly break it down into easier terms. The writing assignments he has you do set you up for your papers brilliantly. He is a great teacher and the class is valuable
Dr. LeTourneau is a very excellent teacher. If you want to write or become better at writing, you will love his class. I can understand why people think he is hard, but it is just because he is trying to teach you to write right. Everything that he had us do throughout the semester prepared us for every paper. This class can be easy if you keep up.
you will learn alot in this class. I was readdy to quit his class after my first paper was returned but he tells you how to fix it so it really isnt that hard. he and the subject are both boring. All you have to do is write 3 papers then turn in 2 of them as your final, he tells wich papers he thinks are worthy of being handed in. Good teacher
Would have Chosen to listen to Steven hawking instead of him. Very boring, I tried to get a good grade and I came out with a C! There are better teachers out there for your english credit, I suggest taking them.
Dr. LeTourneau, on an personal basis, was a nice enough individual. However, his teaching style was not for me. His monotone voice in combination with the many textbooks we jumped back and forth from; made the experience a very dull and stressful one.
Dr. LeTourneau was always very willing to answer questions and be understanding. Attendance is mandatory, or you will fall behind! There is a LOT of work, including many assignments due between classes. He is fair in grading.
He's very nice and is eager to help you, but his teaching method is EXTREMELY hard!!! I would recommend asking a lot of questions otherwise you will be totally lost with him.
Dr. Letourneau is brilliant and adorable. He's good at what he does, and tries to help those that need it. That being said, expect a challenge in his class. If you work hard, you'll be rewarded. This is college, it's the way it should be.
Dr. Letourneau is very intelligent and he knows his material, however, he has a difficult time teaching the student. He is very vague in what he wants for his assignments. If you stay on top of your reading the in class material, though difficult, is able to be followed. his assignments however, are where the issues arise.
Dr. Letourneau was the worst English professor I have had at Weber State. His course material and teaching skills are ridiculous and incoherent. I would not take English 2010 from this man.
Fairly unclear most of the time, fuzzy directions, little focus and attention to organization. Course was pretty messy and disorganized, not good for a course on comp.
Very difficult class. I spent literally dozens of hours working on the three papers that were required to be written, consistently used tutors, and met with Dr. LeTourneau during his office hours for guidance on how to be successful in his class. I had strived to get an A in the class to maintain my 4.0 GPA, but ended up with a B+.
I loved this class. Probably one of the hardest classes I ever took, but I learned so much. Highly recommend.
Terrible. He is a brilliant man, but he is a failure as a professor. He is unclear in his instructions, due dates, reading assignments, etc. I've taken two classes from him, and found him to be terrible in both instances. Many times he would tell us that he didn't know the answer to a question, but then he would ALWAYS test you on it!!! AVOID!
I had him as my English 2010 professor this semester and his class was one of the hardest classes ever! I always thought of English as an easy subject but just transfer out don't take it from this man he is monotone his papers are way difficult because there on subjects that no one really knows anything about overall awful experience
He is a very smart man, but is a terrible teacher. His teaching style is incredibly unclear. I realized three weeks into class that not a single one of my classmates understood what was going on for the majority of class. He is a good person and a friendly man, but if you want a good grade out of this class, take it from a different professor.
He is hard to understand and doesn't explain very clearly the things he teaches about and just expects that we understand without further explanation. He grades easy until the final then hard. He doesn't have much structure to the essays assigned, so someone who needs direction may struggle(me). One of the hardest classes I've taken.
Linguistics Class. Required a lot. Not clear on assignments. Difficulty explaining some concepts. Expected you to know more than he taught when it came to tests. Was willing to meet with me when needed. I am a hard working straight A student with a degree but would not take a class from him again.
Smart man, but unclear. He expects you to clearly understand everything he says and when you ask for clarification he just repeats himself. No essay rubric, you better remember or write down everything he says he expects. Gives you 2 days to write a 6 page paper. Taught a writing style I've never learned, it was very different and difficult.
Letourneau really is the sweetest guy. He knew all our names by day two. Although he is unclear at times, he is also understanding and lenient.I felt that my writing drastically improved thanks to him. We only wrote 3 papers which were all pretty short. The longest paper was only 6 pages. It requires work though as any 2010 English class.
I took Dr. LeTourneau for a Linguistics in Languages in World Literature course taught alongside Dr. Subbiah. The class is brand new so the syllabus was optional; however, Dr. LeTourneau was more than helpful in meeting with me to figure out my final paper and went the extra mile to look at my final before it was due in order for me to have an A.
Dr. LeTourneau was a very good teacher. He offered very good advice and helps you improve your writing as the semester goes on. If you do the work you will get credit, however, that said there is a lot of writing and reading. The reading can be confusing at times but it is discussed in depth in class. I would take a class from him again.
This teacher was very unclear and expected you to have a great knowledge on complicated subjects. He made us rewrite long papers multiple times and was no help in correcting them. Overall, I received a good grade in the class but it was more work than it was worth.
ENGL 3050 Grammar. Homework, then more detailed homework, then 3 exams and 2 analysis of a text. It's a lot of homework, but it's also a difficult subject, so you really do need it to learn the subject. Class is about clauses, phrases, sentence structure, and a lot more. Make sure you know your nouns, verbs, adj, adv, preps, pronouns, it will help.
He is very intelligent and you can suffer for it. Grading is nitpicky and grades like you have a Masters in English. Takes things literally and won't use common sense when reading certain things in essays, your grade will suffer for this. Opinionated grader. Gives good feedback but chance of pissing you off. 4 units 4 essays. Difficult readings.
This was one of my favorite classes. At first I was worried because Mark is kind of monotone and has an interesting sense of humor. But he is incredibly intelligent and does a great job at teaching. Everyone in my class ended up loving him. It's a writing class, so papers galore, but if you participate and pay attention, you will be ready to write.
He was a very nice professor and gave honest feedback on your work, but he was unclear most of the time. I often would find myself struggling trying to write my essays the way he wanted, and even then he would harshly grade them. I honestly would not recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Letourneau is a very intelligent man. He knows what he is talking about, and this is to our advantage because he gives precise, quality feedback on every paper you write. Dr. Letourneau LITERALLY tells you what you need to do in the comments he leaves on your papers to pass the class. If you want to improve your writing skills, take his class.
He's a VERY strict grader but he knows what he's talking about & is willing to help you outside of the classroom (but it can hurt you too). For a gen ed English course, it's way too difficult. Only Upper Division Writing Center tutors can help you since the material taught is UD ENGL material. This class made me a better writer but trashed my GPA.
Dr. LeTouneau knows what he is talking about. However, as a gen ed. class do not take him. He is not clear on what he wants in your papers and grades way to harshly. If your papers aren't written based on how he would right it, you wont get a good grade.
He's very hard to understand because of his diction. He does not make things clear and doesn't give good examples. He reminds me of the teacher from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", the one that says in a boring monotonous tone "Bueller, Bueller". I called him Professor Binns (for you Harry Potter readers).
Dr. LeTourneau is a very thorough when grading essays. While we had three essays that were due in class (7 week accelerated class) we discussed many writings that supported the formats we were utilizing in our assignments. He was helpful in explaining when we asked questions. You need to go to class and if you participate, this class is a good GE.
Not only are his assignments unreadable but his lectures are impossible to distinguish between babble and actual lesson. Everything you can learn in this class can be easily found on YouTube.
I took the hybrid class from Dr. Letourneau and so we met twice a week in class and once outside of class. Literally have never had to work so hard in a class to get a good grade. He is a very tough grader I noticed the class average per essay was a B-. If your looking to go into writing he definitely nit picks and teaches a lot. Overall way tough.
Would not recommend this teacher, overall very tough grader and expects you to write flawlessly.
This class was rough.. I really liked him as a person and I know without a doubt that he knows his stuff, but this class was terrible. Do not take unless you absolutely have to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even when following his ridiculously picky guidelines to the tee I still end up with bad grades! Awful class environment, negative atmosphere and makes anyones passion for writing disappear in the first week. AVOID AT ALL COSTS and don't get stuck before the drop date like I did.
Teacher is dope. You have to care about what you're doing, if you show that you are trying then he will grade accordingly. It's not high school, it's college. You can't B.S. the papers, you have to put in the work. I consistently was doing things last minute and still received a good grade, I think because I was honest in my work and effort.
The expectations and instructions given are vague at best and can be interpreted in many different ways, and if that doesn't match his own interpretation you should expect to get docked. He's hard to get a hold of and won't respond for days, if not weeks. Class average: C
Dr. LeTourneau is a great guy. He is there to help if you have questions and he certainly knows his stuff. However, his class was, well something. He speaks very quietly and monotonously. He lectures from a Word Document. Assignments aren't hard, but his notes are in shorthand that you have to attend class to understand them and instructions.
He only knows how to explain things one way so if you don't understand, good luck. He doesn't use powerpoint but he does have a word doc that's over 100 pages that it impossible to find anything. Hope you like random acronyms for EVERYTHING. Has the most droney voice to listen to. Uses 2 textbooks. Doesn't give instructions, find them yourself.
Dr. LeTourneau knows his stuff. He is very knowledgeable, and if you attend his classes, you should be able to do well. His feedback literally tells you exactly what you need to do or fix, and he examines the same issues in practice exercises, homework assignments, and exams. His classes require effort, but if you put the time in, you'll be fine.
Hardest grader I have ever had. I always felt like I knew what to do, and then the feedback would show otherwise. It was hard for me to understand what he was expecting. Online might be worse than in person classes, but I always felt confused, and couldn't really get the clarity I needed. Lot's of reading. Lots of homework. Would not recommend.
Graded by points, not %'s. You can't be completely sure when class is optional or not, and he marks attendance. His class is boring and monotone. He asks if anyone has questions. He grades and gives feedback on everybody's 1st and 2nd drafts. I HATE it when he breaks up students into individual rooms: you can be alone on your own time. He is nice.
Hardest class I've ever taken--more so than Human Anatomy. He admittedly has not taught this class in years and it shows. The textbook is useless and he agrees, no other resources to use. His explanations are convoluted and confusing, tons of homework and exams. He spent all of class reading aloud instead of lecturing. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Dear GOD, I am begging you not to take ANY class with this man. I have never had more issues with a teacher than with him. He grades incredibly harshly, only allows redo's based on some arbitrary standard of his own, and will not work with you whatsoever. he also has a section on his syllabus about how to file a complaint on him- not a good sign...
I am a 4.0 student going on three years now and this man broke my gpa. His horrid teaching and nonsense instructions reflect poorly on his students. The Class average was a D. He does not want his students to pass and he will not work with you no matter how polite you are. Look me in the eyes and tell me you will not take this class. I am begging.
Mark Letourneau is one of the worst professors I have ever had. His lectures are unorganized and extremely difficult to follow. He uses abbreviations for EVERYTHING and when I voiced that I was struggling he dismissed my frustrations and told me to calm down. He is very rude and does not care about his students or their success.
Very boring and unkind. does not give good instructions yet is picky about formatting and grades harshly. Short answers are best otherwise he picks apart what you say and docks points. Very disorganized. Tenure is probably the only reason he still has a job. DO NOT TAKE.
Please avoid this professor
He is a smart man, I'll give him that, but he is the hardest teacher I've ever had. I spend more time deciphering what he's asking in his hw questions than actually figuring out the answer, there's hw every day, and you have to show up even though he doesn't teach anything, you just go over yesterday's work. You teach yourself out of the textbook.
I worked on an open note exam with my friend (who was in the class with me) because this course is impossible to understand on your own, our answers were the same yet he gave us different scores. He takes things personally and does not grade consistently or fairly. He docked me for really obscure things.
This class was comparable to being crushed slowly by a billboard advertising denture cream while your foot is being gnawed off by a badger and the daughter you abandoned throws jars of expired tomato sauce at you.
Dr. L is a beyond brilliant man he just doesn't seem to be too great at passing that information on to his students. Plus technology wasn't his friend and he would get upset and it made for some awkward classes. But if you are ready to read and ask the right type of questions, its not too bad.
At first, I found Dr. LeTourneau's lectures to be much of the same from my 1010 class, and was bored with his lectures. But as the semester progressed, I found him to be very insightful. He's a tough grader, but my ability to write good papers has increased astronomically. Overall, if you want to learn a lot, take this class.
The semester in which I had his class was extremely difficult for me. I had some personal things going on. Getting assignments in on time was a real struggle. This professor always gave great feedback and was always quick to respond to messages over Canvas. I'm pretty sure his personal help was the only reason I was able to pass all my classes.
Dr. Letourneau is probably the hardest English teacher I have ever had in my entire college experience. While trying to decipher what to do for his assignments, I found myself on the brink of multiple breakdowns. He gives pages and pages of instruction for assignments, and it is very confusing navigating his class.
Singly handedly the worst teach I have ever had. Gives pages and pages of instructions and you follow them to a T and you still get half credit. I'll be the first to say english isn't my strong suit but he was awful. His feedback is no help and only makes the assignments harder. I couldn't name one good thing about this teacher. Save your time.
Into to Linguistics is NOT an intro class. There are 3 to 6 assignments per week and bi-weekly exams. This excessive workload makes it difficult to absorb the material. The class moves extremely quickly. He writes in shorthand and speaks in jargon, making his lectures and assignments nearly indecipherable. I DO NOT recommend this professor.
Absolutely psycho. Grades super hard and looks way too hard into your work. Chill, it's an English class. Homework first day of class and every day or every other day. STAY AWAY
Do not walk; run from the very thought of taking Mark's classes. His grading is beyond absurd. And his expectations are absurd. He doesn't believe in giving anyone 100% and deducts points for simple errors. It is too late to save myself, but if I can help even one person from living through his class, it is worth the sacrifice.
Mark was a hard grader. I worked hard on each of my papers and looked at the feedback he gave me after submitting the first draft and fixed it and still didn't get an A in the class. I did not enjoy this class but that could be because it was and online class he might be better in person.
I took this course through zoom and the only reason why I didn't opt out of this was to spite myself, which was my first mistake. It's obvious that he is a tenured professor in how he leads his lectures, explains his materials, and answers student questions with the same things every time. So DON'T. JUST DON'T take his course.
For a professor teaching a class on clear writing, he's sure bad at writing assignment descriptions. You can tell he's very knowledgeable, but he's not good at teaching you what he knows. Online class format is super difficult, lectures are limited and not very helpful. You basically have to teach yourself.
WARNING Avoid this class at all costs. You will fail regardless of the amount of effort you put into it. He told me "a C in this class is an A". I had to fight for my grade till the very end. He had ruined my perfect transcript and is not finished either. Don't let him ruin your life to. Join the fight to remove him from the Weber State campus.
You're here for one of two reasons: either you're wondering if you should take a class from MLT, or you're wanting to commiserate with the rest of us who have suffered. To the first group: if you want to keep your GPA, stay away. He is vague, lazy, and inattentive. To the second group, I send my virtual hugs & hope that you survive the semester. xo
Be prepared for lots of work.
Rarely gives 100%, you can do the work and try your best and still receive 60% on your assignments. No missing assignments, read all the material, spent time and effort on assignments, 5+ hours a week, still got a C-.
I took his writing class back in 1988. It was extremely difficult. Dr. Letourneau was hard to understand. If i had questions about his comments on my papers, he just repeated himself. I received the best instruction from the writing assistants in the Writing Center. I earned an A, but the experience was painful. I was surprised he's still at WSU.
This class was definitely one of the hardest ones! Get ready for multiple assignments every week. Yes, it can be overwhelming, but I assure you, you WILL learn A LOT. His feedback is detailed, and if you need clarification, he will elaborate on his comments. I am not too focused on what grade I received; it is about how much we learned.
He is actually really nice and wants to help students learn. I'm not good at English and my class was online so I was confused a lot because there are a lot of lectures and homework, but I met with him outside of class time and he is really helpful and wants to make sure we understand. Stay on top of things and do your best. You'll be okay.
If you want to like lowkey be better at English and lowkey don't have a life other than getting better at English, take the class. If you only need it for credit DO NOT TAKE IT. I mean, it's fine but like just get a better professor. This dude speaks in a monotone and slow voice that is extremely hard to stay attention to.
