We watched cool movies, he was really psyched about discussing them...
stuck on himself.Needs to grow up and become a professional

ouch to the course, very nice suits.
Great prof for univ 101...did a good job considering the clientele...
Discusses Tool and Pink Floyd during class, kind of hard marker
Worst class I ever took. He even chased a student out of the room for leaving early once.

I did not mind going to class but I found he played favorites to the people sitting in the front of the class.
He is the best! Very inspiring and he is very knownledgeable... he really truly knows what he's talking about, and makes sure the class does too. He quotes from outside the text (songs, movies, books) in order for us to understand concepts! HARD MARKER!!!
Great proff. very insightful, always willing to lend a hand. like everything in life you just have to work hard for a good mark.
awesome prof! nice suits and kept the class interesting with song lyrics and movie references. very insightful!
Alright teacher, definitely not the best! Marks way to hard. Didn't really learn much from the class...
One of the best profs I've had at the University of Windsor! This guy rocks!
Good prof. Makes you really think your way through the material. Cares about his students and good standards.
I think he'd be better off as a drama professor.
Marks way too hard! Freaks when students leave class early, plays favorites, unclear teaching methods, shows up late for class, too dramatic, and he needs to learn to leave his binoculars at home during finals.
Sucks at teaching, and is very hard to understand what he wants.
First of all, totally plays favourites. I agree with everyone who said that. Secondly, I question his knowledge in the study of philosophy to be perfectly honest. Ever notice how he relates the material to MOVIES all the time? Instead of something useful, he'll say "like in that one movie". Thanks.
drama queen. and why were all his folders pink? exams were impossible. i memorized the entire text and still got a d. blah
The exams are rediculous, you need to be a literature major to understand what the heck he's talking about. You have to read between the lines. And that is not fair, he is not clear of expectations at all.
This guy is the most unhelpful individual that teaches; ask him for help and he won’t give it to you, I wonder why he has office hours. his exams make impossible easy and for teaching a class that was prerequisite for non philosophy majors, he made sure that it was the hardest class for you to take, I don’t recommend taking a class he teaches.
I LOVE DR. MARK!!!!
Overall, a very good PHILOSOPHY professor. His lectures are not only informative, but entertaining (which is a bonus). My only problem is that he sometimes assumes that students have backgrounds in philosophy and that we have taken a studied a bunch of topics/philosophers prior to the course in question. Other than that, he's great.
As a non philosphy major I really enjoyed this class. It was a struggle, but if you do the readings and ask questions you can really enjoy it ! Why take a class that is easy anyways !? I love Dr. Mark too ! And as far as favourites go, if you come to class and discuss material, he will get to know you and your opinion - which is not a bad thing !
Not a good class, midterms and finals very tough (looks like there is more than one answer and all he will say is choose the better one). Even studying leaves you unsure about your mark.
He cannot justify his marking scheme and confuses himself in class. Tells everyone they don't know what they're talking about but can't explain what the "right" way is. Greasy ponytail- wearing a suit to class doesn't hide the fact you need to wash your hair.
Interesting and nice. I stoped taking notes by the end of the class and just read the manual. Aced the class but not because of the teacher, because i taught myself. Overall a nice guy...easy to get along with.
Absolutely HORRIBLE. Either he barely understands the concepts or he enjoys confusing the students. He cannot justify his marking scheme and confuses himself in class. Is even WORSE when you ask for help. Not personable at all. Read the book, skip the class... but then you'll miss out on the greasy ponytail
Letteri is an entertaining and engaging prof, but I find myself walking out of class thinking, what did he spend that hour talking about? He spends no time on details and just focuses on the big picture, which can make things difficult if you don't spend time yourself with the material. Really nice guy though. If you want a fun class, take his.
I liked Letteri. I thought he was fairly straight-forward. By the looks of it, you don't really need to show up to every class, but I did anyway. Took notes in every class but did not touch them for studying. I just went through the text and underlined everything. Got an A. He makes class fly by, and he goes through the text. Straight-forward.
I'm surprised by the horrible ratings. He really is a fair prof with fair (but demanding) tests. If you work for an A, you'll get the A. No b.s. He's pretty engaging, too. Class usually flew by- lots of participation. Very easy going. I took down notes every day but never touched them for studying. I underlined the textbook exclusively. Good class.
Tests are valid and fair. He makes even dry material amusing. Definitely show up for class. Great Prof.
Brutal prof. Makes the material really boring and hard to follow. I did not learn a thing in this class and lost my love for philosophy. Yet the guy does look like a**** star with that pony tail...
Good Prof. Explains things very clearly and tells you clearly what you need to study for the tests. Grading is fair. Only complaint is that he is at least 2-3 minutes late every class.
His classes are VERY boring. He likes to make jokes that only he thinks are funny and it gets annoying. The class did seems to get more interesting after the midterm and it was more about class discussions.Brutal midterm, but its better by the final once you know what he wants...but its a bit too late by then cuz the exams are 40% and 50%. Id avoi
One of the best profs I've had at Windsor. Really knows his stuff, great sense of humour.
POWER TRIP,lectures freshman students as if they are philosophy scholars. Needs to bring his lectures to their level of comprehension. I went to his office asked for material clarification and out of the blue told me you better drop the course. Your final and essay marks are based on whatever you got on your midterm. Got D in MDterm & D in overall.
got a nice little email he sent to the whole class about his frustration with us asking questions about our midterm paper. apparently we should know better. Might have been wise to drop this first week.
It is amazing to me anyone gave this man a good review, I question his knowledge of philosophy, or of anything for that matter. He is a lazy professor, picks his favorite quotes and reads them from the text, is unclear when answering questions - it seems he just does not know the answer, and unclear of his expectations. Awful, awful prof.
I think this man is great. He's the reason I fell in love with philosophy. Can be challenging at times, but that's a good thing.
Don't take a class with this guy. He doesn't explain texts in any detail at all. He just picks quotes and relates them to his life and/or makes jokes about them. Classes seem to take forever because there is no point to them... he just loves to hear his own voice. So self-absorbed. Take philosophy classes, just not with this guy.
I love this man! He was extremely helpful and kept me engaged. He made it easier to understand by using examples and his humor kept it interesting!
An astonishingly bad professor. He is vague when he needs to be clear; uninformative when he needs to be enlightening; chatty when he needs to be formal. All of these features coalesce to form a professor that is unbearable to serious students. One walks away from class always feeling the poorer and never the richer for attending. A real shame.
I signed up for the class thinking that it may be interesting;upon completion, I can say it was a waste of time and money. Lectures were incoherent and uninformative. Letteri was pretentious and seemed always one track minded. He was late on several occasions for lectures and almost seemed unprepared each time. I do not recommend this professor.
Sincerely seems like a bad person, which is reflected in his teaching.
Never take a class with this joke, unless you want to teach yourself from the $100 philosophy mini-book. He's late to lectures & exams, not engaging at all. Communication skills lack, he starts lecturing but it then turns into a whisper or conversation with a single student. LETTERI IS A BAD BAD PROF DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES---YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
I liked this class. The readings were difficult but Letteri's lectures helped me understand the material. The attendance rate was pretty low, so some of the angry commentators probably have no one to blame but themselves if they got a bad grade in the course.
He's always late for class and exams, his slides would be vague;when he explained points on slides, he would not even get to the point to make it understandable. All the class is is conversation; what your thoughts and opinions are. His exams are mc and essay. If you don't know material you won't get good mark. Learned more from internet to study.
I took a class with the prof a few semesters ago. I have just been reminded by how terrible he was from a friend in his class and thought I would leave a word of warning. Letteri was often late, had incoherent lectures and picked favorites. His lectures were dry and inconsistent. I walked out with a B-, but I learned everything from the textbook.
I faithfully attended every class and read all material. I will never take another philosophy class because of this one. The exam questions were impossible to comprehend. It was an egotistical joke...well a nightmare really. Pulled down my perfect A average and it was an elective:( It is unfortunate because I found the entire concept so interesting
This guy is the worst prof I have ever had in my life, avoid taking class with him at any cost. I seriously don't know how he got his PHD if he even has one.
I had this prof in second year and hated the class so much I didn't take a philosophy course since. He was a pretentious snob who shouldn't be teaching but is. I am now finally in my 4th year enrolled in a philo course and LOVE IT. If you like philosophy, try not to get discouraged by one prof. This prof is terrible, but others are great at the U.
... that explains it all. I'm so shocked I got nothing to say.
Great professor. Must attend every class and work hard to succeed. He is personable and was available for extra help if needed.
Took ethics over the summer. Great prof, well spoken. Clear and concise lectures. I recommend taking his class. All test material is covered in class, so attend class and take notes. The only reason I got an A rather than an A+ is because the TA graded much more harshly than the prof.
Goes on and on about one world, gets off track post nothing online. Worst prof I have ever had for first years.
Contemporary moral issues class. First philosophy class I've ever taken and will never take another one. Class attendance is mandatory, little to no reference to the textbook (but readings are required). Mid terms were constructed unnecessarily hard. Good guy, not a good prof.
TERRIBLE PROF. His lectures are boring and dry. He explains things really vaguely and basic with little to no detail. His exam questions are nearly impossible to understand. Not sure how this guy got his teaching degree.
Reasoning Skills. Good class, boring at times but pretty easy. Just have to read both textbooks (chapters are relatively short and easy to read) to do well on the midterms and final. Very nice guy and funny at times.
One of the worst profs I've had? Lectures are very confusing. When he did use a ppt (twice) he was very vague and got off topic a lot. Would never be clear with ideas. Also, when he uses that portable microphone is doesn't help it just muffles his voice! Also, the midterm was a joke! DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! Unless you want to teach yourself...
He sometimes gets a bad rap. Truth is, if you attend class and participate in the sometimes off topic discussions, the material will be more clear, as well as what is he looking for in his exams. A lot of people have trouble with philosophy. Critical thinking rather than memorization. If you don't like thinking, or don't like reading, avoid him.
Excellent prof!People confuse the difficulty of PHILOSOPHY with Dr. Letteri. If you attend class (which is what is expected in all classes, right?)and read the textbook you will do great in his classes. I have taken both his Morality and Reasoning skills classes and did great in both. Don't take a philosophy course if you aren't willing to think .
Worst prof ever. Makes you sign contracts and takes pictures while you're writing exams. Literally watches what you write down on paper. Exams are impossible. He makes my life miserable.
This professor lacks professionalism. The material wasn't difficult like some people on this forum are saying, but the man digresses so much from the topic that the lectures carry on much longer than they should and become much more confusing. He literally watches over your shoulder as you write exams which makes it difficult to concentrate.
Hes lectures are very confusing and not clear. He does not listen to the students, he has a hard head. Worst teacher I ever had. He made me want to kill myself... I advise everyone to drop his class or do not sign up for it if he is the teacher, you will fail, cry and he will ruin your life. Hes out to get students.
He can go off-topic sometimes, but his points are always relevant to the discussion in class. While he might not always mention it, he is extremely approachable and is willing to listen to students in his office hours. Sometimes it can be hard to get a hold of him during class time because he plans out his lectures to fit the class time.
Really regret taking his philosophy and pop culture class. Lectures were confusing and only focused on excessive technological use in society. His lectures weren't philosophical either; pretty slow and boring honestly. Oh and the exam was REALLY hard and was also marked REALLY hard. I hope not all philosophy courses are like this one.
Four years at uwindsor and by far this is the absolute worst prof. He is rude. He is unfair. His lectures are boring. A lot of reading. And on top of that, you will still end up with a low grade. I have never seen a prof as hated as he is. He shouldn't be teaching.
The class was boring and the prof would often go off topic and clearly favoured one person in the class over the rest. It was more of a philosophy class than an introduction to ethics. The grading was done by his GA and she graded the papers with different expectations than outlined in the rubric created by the prof
Lectures were super boring, solely him speaking. No slides. You have to go to class because the whole lecture is him just speaking.
The prof came across as a nice guy. He almost made me transfer to another school. If you value your time, money, and education, do not take any of his classes. Run!
Dr. Letteri is not only one of the most intelligent profs I've ever had, he's the most accessible as well. Any questions you have, no matter how general, he was willing to answer during his office hours and in class. Have a question the day before the midterm? He answered my email at midnight on a sunday 30 minutes after I sent it. Excellent prof
His midterm and final exam questions are vague. And when you ask for clarification he rewords the question to be even more abstract. He experimented with our class and tried to teach narcissism as the central concept and relate it to philosophers' theories of character. Did not work. Teaching style is mediocre, reads from the book in class.
You have to go to his lectures because he does not put up slides for you to study. He basically puts up bulletted points on a slide during class, and talks about each point one by one. He will give subtle hints as to what types of things you can expect on a midterm or exam, but he won't explicitly say it. Don't skip class.
He is just terrible. He will go over the same things in a 3 hour lecture several times but just word it differently. He is very heavy on the reading and if you don't do it or have time to you will not do well. His midterms are essay style questions and are extremely vague.
Very rude to his students
The lectures were long, and dry. He is a very smart person, I found him funny not mean. He has great opinions on philosophy. You HAVE to do all of the readings to pass this class, and you have to enjoy essays. Good guy, but the course was a drag.
I was double majoring in Crim and Philosophy before I took Intro to Western Philosophy with Letteri. I learned more about Donald Trump and the US election rather than anything related to Philosophy. He gets way too off topic for far to long, and marks extremely hard when marking papers. Dont take this class. Other Profs will tell you the same thing
Did not like his teaching style at all, he was extremely rude to his students, and he did not care to give any extra clarification at all He didn't post anything resources online, If you don't see things his way then good luck passing
Did not like his teaching style at all, he was extremely rude to his students, and he did not care to give any extra clarification at all, he was rarely available outside of class time He didn't post anything resources online, If you don't see things his way then good luck passing
If you are in first year University and have never taken a philosophy class, do not take a first year class with Letteri. He assigns material that I have covered in 4th year philosophy classes. He has been reported many times for this issue. His grading is all over the place. I got an A on the midterm and a D on an essay?
Should. Not. Be. Teaching. I can not put it any other way. Worst prof at Uwindsor. He is immature, rude, and an extremely tough marker. Boring papers, hard exams, no lecture slides. Do NOT take his class. He does not care about students, about our effort, nothing. He replies to emails alright... in the most rude manner possible. Avoid at all costs.
Tests are obscure and way too specific to write complete responses. Decided to teach psychology in a philosophy course... I do not recommend.
He's a nice guy and approachable outside of class, but in lecture was as dry as the desert. I was never really clear on what concepts we were learning as he would digress from his topics often. I did decent on the midterm, but almost all of the class failed the paper. Would not recommend if taking your first philosophy course.
"I expect mastery of all given reading" 9 chapter midterm, covered 4 in class . He is drier than a bounce sheet in class and makes you wonder why your tuition helps fund his world of war craft tournaments. 4th year student and he is the first prof to make me shudder at the thought of going to his class
This prof does not follow the course description whatsoever. He teaches his opinions and expects everyone to agree. He says offensive things, is ignorant and close minded. He only shows two slides per lecture and doesn't post any slides online. He never stays on topic and is unclear on his expectations. The exam questions are confusing. Worst prof.
Very easy course, simply listen and respond.
Please don't listen to these scrubs. Literally no one in my class did the reading or homework. A question worth a quarter of the midterm was GIVEN TO US WITH THE ANSWER in the workbook. This is the state of education now. People complaining because they can't Facebook-surf their way to a good grade. Pathetic. Letteri is awesome. Sort yourself out.
Dr. Letteri is excellent. Detailed lectures and excltremely accessible via email. 98% of these reviews are clearly written by non-majors who got burned looking for 1st-yr bird courses. If you attend class and take notes you'll actually learn something and will know exactly what to expect on his exams. If not, you'll whine and shift blame online.
I'm a philosophy major and found the class to be very bias towards his own opinions. However, if you take good notes and actually pay attention in class (can be difficult because he's kinda dull) then you will get a decent mark. Incorporate your own knowledge from other classes to get an A. You MUST attend class but I don't recommend for non-majors
The worst professor. So boring and monotone. It's absolutely ridiculous to expect anyone to sit and listen to him ramble for that long.
Terrible prof. Extremely boring and drags on. Relies on the TA for information from the course way too much and doesn't allow laptops in class. 10/10 would not recommend.
Although graded by only 3 things, he only includes information that is assessable from his lectures. So while it's helpful to read the books, it's not needed. However, his voice is very monotone, and while the lecture are all you need, they do get very boring.
Lectures were very unclear, all the teaching consisted of was talking. Very minimal visuals or information given to us. Basically taught myself and still had an unsure idea going into the final.
If youre in his first year year philosophy class it has a lot of reading and does not like giving out good marks on the mid terms and exams. He is a fair marker if you know your content but dont expect to pass if you dont do the readings because his lectures are pointless and boring and dont help with the testing.
Lots of readings but I didn't do them and still got a good mark based on the lectures. Very monotone voice so I fell asleep in class a couple times. Other than that he's an alright dude.
Great engaging lectures. If you attend class and take notes + read text you should do great.
Prof is knowledgable and passionate about PHIL. Sometimes tough to follow, scrambling to take notes down, but worth it. After re-reading my notes it all makes sense. he uses a lot of sources to help you understand better. he engages the class but doesn't force you to speak for points. no electronics - love this idea! you really focus more this way
Don't waiste your time with this prof. You can tell teaching isn't calling. He just does it for the pay. I took 3 of his courses before. I barely passed one and dropped the other two.
I was afraid to miss lectures, I feel as though youd miss too much. I didnt quite understand what the point of this class was, or what to expect on exams, I did really enjoy though how he does his lectures, he knows very well what hes teaching which makes it nice to listen to. I did not read the first of the books but the lectures were enough
I'm assuming those who are complaining below never actually went to classs and took notes, or understand philosophical ideas. Sure, you have to apply yourself a little more (by actively taking notes) but you do that and you'll be fine! It's really not that hard. I find taking notes then re-reading them on my own really help me understand!
Letteri has amazing lectures and is very well spoken, you will never be confused about what he is saying. Enjoys class discussions, friendly and passionate about what he teaches. LOTS of reading, but got by with a decent grade from just attending lectures. You MUST attend lectures. I would only recommend this class to people who like to write ALOT
He is very knowledgeable and interested in what he teaches. There are no electronics allowed in class (all notes must be written) but I found it to be helpful and made studying easy. You need to be able to make connections to the different topics he teaches in order to do well on the exams. I really enjoyed his class.
Does not really explain concepts well. Has a disdain for technology. Talks down to class constantly. I would not recommend taking his classes; he posts no slides or any online material, and is very unclear about what will be on exams. Nice enough guy though.
It's clear he knows a lot about the subjects he teaches, but he manages to explain concepts in a way that make it more difficult than it has to be. Very tough grader and each of his exam only has a handful of questions, often not the topics we spent much time discussing. Failing one question its a huge ding in your mark. Would NOT recommend.
Books were essentially read to you in class. He wastes a lot of time listening to student's anecdotes and rushes to finish the material. This class should only be used for people who like to read or philosopher majors. It does not count as a language credit, just art. Be careful with this class - it's a waste of time.
he was good. make sure to read the books and really understand them and you will do awesome!
Letteri is the type of Professor to put his Twitter in your syllabus. He will read to you out of the book(s) he expects you to read, in a gruesomely slow and monotone manner. As if he's reading a bedtime story. 'Accommodating' comes to mind. As in he will accommodate himself to as much of your time (money) as he possibly can.
Never Again.
He is extremely vague, and cannot clearly maintain overarching themes of readings or topics during lectures. Horrible professor especially during Covid, do not enroll!
Worst class ever. I took this class because I thought it would be interesting, but the course description does not match the content. We read texts from the 1800s and 1900s and connect it to today's tech. When I asked for feedback on a midterm he told me to "do better" and how I would have done better if I had only applied myself. Do not take it.
From the description of the course, the actual course was not related at all. He reads articles most of the time before talking about actual course materials. It's a hard class.
What can I say, I have read these reviews before this semester began and still took this course, this is all my fault. I deserve a bad grade.
Honestly among the worst professors I've had this semester. I took this class interested in the subject and left the class hating it. His voice is SOOOO monotone and it's very hard to stay focused. He is terrible. His exams have nothing to do with his lectures and he is vey rude over email. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!!!!!!
An Amazing professor. Dont listen to all the other reviews they are all from non majors looking for an easy elective. His exam was a bit tricky but if you prepare well you should be more than fine. His live lectures are very clear and keep you interested in the subject of philosophy. He responds to emails really fast and is very helpful. 10/10
Awful professor. If you need a philosophy course for whatever reason take any other professor, just not this one.
Dr. Mark Letteri is the WORST professor this school has to offer. I have had him for 2 classes now. Letteri is unwilling to adapt to the new age. He is genuinely afraid of technology, doesn't use slides in lecture and speaks with such broken sentences it is impossible to understand him. You can only do good if you teach yourself. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!
Awful
Literally the worst Prof at the University of Windsor
Worst Prof ever
Horrible
Never take this class
WARNING DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSORS CLASSES
He is the worst professor I have ever studied under.
DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE UNDER THIS PROFESSOR. WORST PROFESSOR EVER.
The toughest elective I have ever taken. He has an old-school teaching style that makes it difficult to do well on exams. Don't bother.
DO NOT take any of his courses, he is one of the worst professors I have ever encountered. He does not give a single damm about you or your future, He discusses some random topics and then gives u 2book of 250 pages for ONE midterm.
Total inconsiderate of the fact that students are online and needed help adjusting (had him in Fall 2020). Makes class unnecessarily hard. He is an absolutely awful teacher, and definitely should not be in this profession. Avoid classes with him at any cost.
He seems like a knowledgeable professor but his lectures just aren't very good. For this class, he essentially read from the textbook but changed the way that some things were said. The lectures had no visual aid at all. It's just his face while he reads from the book and doesn't offer up his insight into the material, even when asked.
I've never had a professor that was less willing to help their students succeed. The lectures were awful and he marked the midterms so brutally. I did better on a midterm when I read the book by myself than with any of his "guidance" in class. I highly recommend that you DON'T take any classes taught by this professor.
Some things you should know - don't be scared off by the other ratings. There is a LOT of reading, sometimes it was light (like an article) and sometimes its entire books so be prepared to give yourself time to read the material in advance. Very lecture heavy with no power points, as long as you pay attention and stay on top of reading you'll be ok
Long boring lectures, non-interactive. No powerpoints. Rambles often about unrelated subjects such as his hate for zoomers. Very little of the lectures are actually important. My midterm had four questions on it, and I didn't know the material because of the raw amount of nothingness coming from his lectures. Save your time, do NOT take this prof.
This professor is the epitomy of lazy. Very little graded work, no clear criteria for grades, zero differentiated teaching (he literally reads from a book, no powerpoint, no resources, nothing). He grades things abstractly and does not engage in any way with students. Avoid this prof.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! he literally gives you so much reading and he literally ranted about skip the dishes once. Goes off-topic during his three-hour lectures He also grades very hard. His midterms are full essays. Save yourself do not take him!
I see quite a few negative reviews, and I can understand those perceptions. However, in my experience, Dr. Letteri has been extremely helpful and has given me accommodation when I have needed it this term. He cares a great deal about what he discusses, and, while he speaks it riddles, it is all quite interesting.
Nothing is online and there were no assignments. Too many long readings for an elective.
Too many readings that can't even be found online. Not allowed to take notes on laptop in class, infact, not allowed on any devices. Nothing is posted online.
hes pretty chill i cant lie. the bad ratings were by ppl who very clearly didn't do the readings assigned. even if you don't, you can always summarize the needed points with AI so its not that serious. prof is very cool tho and all lectures are very engaging and kinda like class discussions which I loved even tho the exams were kinda hard.
Great professor. Very engaging classes, that changed my outlook on life. Do the readings, you might see something that wasn't really touched on in class on exam. Despite the exams being a bit tough, he's a fair marker, and if you show up and engage in class, you'll do fine. High recommend for electives. Class discussions really apply to modern life
Lectures were always enjoyable explorations of readings. He was always accessible outside of class and willing to provide extra insight on course content. Grading for exams was consistent and straightforward. When consulting this page, I would keep in mind that there are likely a few disgruntled STEM majors that think philosophy is bird courses.
The readings recommended for this course, especially in the latter half tend to be very repetitive and nonsensical. I personally find him to be very smart and interesting, but for this specific course (1290) I would not take him again. Has a very ‘kids these days' mentality.
I find his grading to be quite difficult. I got the right answer to one of the written exam questions and he actually graded me poorly compared to my colleagues who got the answers wrong. He is helpful in answering your questions but would bring up random stuff like his own political views which I find inappropriate in a classroom setting.
Would not recommend to take him for an elective.
I have never met such an incompetent and unengaging instructor in my fifty years of life. The grading never makes sense, the better you think you do the worse the mark you receive is. His entire persoective can be boiled down to “kids these days”.
Oh my god. Where do I even begin? His class is genuinely a waste of time. You will learn nothing from the lectures. Just read the assigned readings, and you do okay on the exams. I literally did better on my exams after I stopped going to his lectures. He also doesn't allow technology which is annoying. Overall, he is terrible.
He provided no feedback on any midterms. He would just talk about random stuff and expect us to know the course content on our own. A horrible class to take in general but especially in first year. STAY AWAY.
Lots of reading, and little guidance on what we would be tested on. Excellent at guiding class discussions, but the course description was misleading, and main focus was on applying ancient philosophies to social trends. Marks were often taken off without specific indications why. Not an ideal course if you're looking for an elective.
He strongly recommends that you bring notebooks to take notes instead of electronics, as he doesn't like electronics, but if you miss something, he doesn't mind repeating himself. He also greatly appreciates participation, as he wants his students to step out of their comfort zone. His midterms/exams aren't hard, but the grading is very harsh.
I'll start this review by saying that I am a math and stats student and this professor clearly assumes everyone is in the social science. He assigns an ungodly amount of reading work and attendance is basically required if you want to pass. If you are already into philosophy, I think you'll enjoy him, but if not stay away,
Expects a lot of reading for each midterm (over 100 pages) and the final exam includes a 300 page book that is not treated at all in class. Attendance is mandatory but you cannot bring any electronics only a pen and a notebook is allowed. Grading is very picky even for a second year course. I would not recommend to take if you don't need it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS or any of the professors other classes. Take my word it'll save you unnecessary stress and worry.
Wanders off topic CONSTANTLY to the point it gets unbearable. The tests are also filled with questions that have nothing to do with what he teaches. Also get ready to read countless books.
Not a difficult class if you can produce original thoughts of your own. Skip the lectures and just read! The material is well curated, thought-provoking and applicable to modern life, but God does he make it needlessly exhausting. The last thing you want when you have other classes to worry about is this dude's dour, 80 minute rants about society.
I took several courses with Dr. Letteri at Windsor. His teaching is old-school with close readings of texts, discussion of major themes, and no tech in class. He expects you to show up having read the material and to take handwritten notes. Exams are essay-style. He's demanding but represents what university teaching should be.
I love philosophy, it's a subject I have ALWAYS done well in, but it's legitimately so sickening being in his class. He's rude and inconsiderate, and his exams are essay style- which he gave no previous clarification on despite being asked MANY times. If you're looking for an easy elective to take, take economics, not philosophy.
Save yourself. His exams do not match the lectures, he's condescending in person and over emails, and is little to no help at all. I completed all readings, always showed up to take notes, studied in advance and he was still no good. Exam questions are purposely dense and wordy for no reason. I hoped to get run over before making it to his class.
Do not take the class. Gets off topic constantly (and all auditory, no PowerPoint at all) and does very weird side comments that ARE very inappropriate in class. His syllabus is extremely difficult to read, and makes you sign a consent form so he can say you agreed to whatever he lists in the syllabus. Not empathetic, will not give you feedback.
He rambles and his exams are very dense and not straightforward. He gives no clarification and refuses to talk about exams in class. He told me to email him if I had any questions about the exam but was so unhelpful and discouraged me to come see my midterm saying it would not be beneficial. Very old school and he discourages using technology.
Dr. Letteri represents what a university education should be. His lectures require you to think, and his exams require you to have done the readings, attended lectures, and to have developed comprehension of the material that you have studied. If you want to learn and think, he is a gem.
You'll go to class ready to write, but will look down and notice you wrote nothing. All he talks about is "Kids these days." He does not allow devices, AND he does not let you leave class without prior notice. He can't work a computer, so he just talks but can't teach. It is a philosophy class, but you'll only question what he's talking about.
waiting for his final which he's starting an hour late for no reason & made one post about it months ago that no one saw. very emblematic of his teaching style. contrary to the reviews he's leaving for himself, it's not what a uni education should be. his classes are inaccessible, pompous, lazily strung together wastes of time. avoid at all costs
A good chunk of his lectures were just rambles about "this generation...", "kids these days..." etc. Nothing that would be super useful when it came to his exams. Given that he's old-fashioned, its preferred to NOT bring tech to his lectures. Also, if you want to leave the class at any time, you have to let him know prior to the class.
