Boring class but not very hard. Nice professor.
Very nice professor, Gives all multiple choice tests!
Dr. Long is very helpful, and the class is pretty interesting but sometimes the lectures get boring. The tests are multiple choice which is good but you have to write 6 essays throughout the semester. very nice guy too
Great teacher, very hard course.
Multiple choice tests are very difficult
There were 7 books for this class. If you want to take this class make sure you have other easy classes because it is impossible to keep up with all the reading. Also the reading is very repetitive and boring.
worst teacher i have ever had
class is intersestin, but tests are extremely confusing and he is not understandable. He also is very unfair when grading essays.
The material is hard but he is a very good teacher that helps you a lot if you read the books and do your papers on time.He doesn't give an A just for being in class!!!An advice,if you don't know how to spell interesting, maybe you shouldn't take his class
Don't take this class if you are taking other difficult political science classes in the same semester. Dr. Long assigns an unreasonable amount of reading and is very uncompromising with respect to the student's other priorities.
It was a special topics class. Tons of reading. Way hard. But, he's way hot with an Irish accent. Just ask yourself what you want.
Not and easy A class, but if you do the reading you'll be fine. Multiple choice tests (chose the best answer kind) and 6 two page essays. Nice guy and willing to help to a reasonable extent.
He's terrible. Rambles contantly about nothing. Amuse yourself by counting tiles on the ceiling. He is the reason I'm taking a semister off. Unreasonable amount of work for an intro class. Take him if you want to fall behind in your other classes.
Sad.. the man can not sum up anything... He takes an hour to explain one definition, then tests on 6-8 chapters in one test. (stuff we didn't talk about at all) 6 essays for an intro class.. WHAT??!
This guy is absolutly brilliant. If you dont like political science dont take him, but if you do, take no one else.
Incredible teacher. Lectures are entertaining, and tests are not overly difficult if you read and study. IS tough on essays- but its worth it because the course is fascinating
I don't even know who they are talking about in the last two reviews, but they must have this guy Long mixed up with someone else. Probably some girls hypnotized by his blarney stone accent. Don't take him, he'll put you to sleep, long winded and boring
tests are extremely tricky..doesnt require any 10 page papers just a couple of essays...workload is not too bad....just watch out for the questions on the test...dont forget to sit on your hands and think!! hahaha
the most AWEFUL professor in the world! Avoid him AT ALL COSTS!! Completely unreasonable, unhelpful, unclear, uncompromising. Nothing you ever ever do is good enough, there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to put yourself through TORTUROUS HELL with this man!
His notes are very confusing..... Don't do it to yourself!
Special topics course about food. Very fun class. No tests, just 10 reading quizzes; several projects--pay attention to them. Reading was enjoyable, albeit a lot. Basically a discussion class. I recommend him.
This class is OK but all the tests are essay. Even though they are take home they are still graded hard. No attendance policy but if you miss you are screwed because so much stuff is covered. He is a huge liberal and he lets it show.
Good professor. I feel he takes essays a little more seriously than he should, but overall I enjoyed him and his class.
A really interesting guy and great professor. He's always willing to help outside of class. Not an easy grader, but I definitely recommend him.
Ready...Set...READ! You'll have between 3-4 books to read and a set reading schedule that you'd better follow, because he likes to give reading QUIZZES EVERY CLASS. Not a terribly, terribly hard class (if your really interested), but seems like an endless one.
I've taken Dr. Long for 3 classes. He is an excellent, objective professor. (some conservatives confuse objective with liberal.) I do not suggest taking one of his classes if you do not like to read. However, his texts are usually fun reads. Always available for questions and extremely nice.
Dr. Long has been my professor and advisor for two years. He is an excellent person who has helped me enormously. He will go out of his way for you if you are a dedicated student. If you're a polisci junky, you must (at least) meet this person.
Tests could be difficult... but this class was one of my most enjoyable this past semester. A lot of in class discussion and extra credit opportunities. Attendance not mandatory. Reading not really that important either. It helps though. LOVED the class!
He's a great guy to listen to, and I loved the students in the class. But he expects a lot out of students. He wants you to be on top of the reading (you will get reading test) even when he's two weeks off the reading list.
Hard - as hard as Creed. But damn, what a sweet class. You'll learn so much about whatever he teaches. He did schedule a paper and an exam in the same week, which sucks, but his grading system is easier than most (an 84 is a B+). Take him just so you'll know so substance about European politics.
Absolutly my favorite professor on campus. He is so interesting! I have already signed up for another class he is teaching because he is such a great professor. I love his accent too!
Class is similar in structure to Creed, although Dr Long's lectures, at least when I had him, were not tested. They were, however, both very interesting and informative.
I lasted until midterms. I suggest you know your stuff for essays, and you won't get 5 points for effort like myself.
This guy know his stuff, but requires a lot of out of class work--have to buy a NY Times everyday of the semester and listen to 2 hours of BBC News per week and a 7 page paper on each. A good class if you have a lot of time on your hands, otherwise it's not for you. For the devoted student of Poly Sci only. Overall a good class.
He is a wonderful teacher. I agree with everyone; he does give a lot of reading every night. His lectures are very interesting. Over all he is a really nice guy. Really cares about his students and wants them to do well. There is also a 15 page paper due at the end of the semester. I highly recommend him. Definitly taking more classes with him.
What kind of description on a 100 level class did they give this poli. sci. nazi? Someone check his green card... i'm not sure if hes capable of teaching here in America. He is, no joke, the reason why I would not declare myself a poli-sci. minor. McTool is a better name for this joke of a guy.
I learned a lot. Map quizzes are tricky, but not impossible, just don't spend all your time memorizing one map. After weeks of discussing China I thought that would be the map; it wasn't. usually only one question on the test is from text only, but if you consistently miss it he knows your not reading. don't wait til last min on NYT project.
He's really good and makes the class really interesting, tying in current events and general stuff that you already know. He often asks the class questions and LOVES to repeatedly unline and circle stuff on the board.
I love Dr. Long! Yes, his class is very time consuming--it took me about 2 hours of reading a night. However, it is worth it; I have learned so much from his class. Any of his classes are great for those who don't mind a challenging class (because doing well in it is so much more rewarding) and who have an interesting in int'l relations/politics
This guy is the man. I took him for 104 and hell its the most work for any introductory course at the college, but you learn so much. Multiple Choice Tests with a map quiz and essay. Study your maps, go to class, and you will do really well.
Long is the man. He's so smart and is on top of everything in his classes, so he actually knows what he's talking about. There is a lot of work but most the readings he picks are straight forward. He's extremely helpful and a nice guy so you should take him any chance you get. Don't know how anyone could hate him.
Mark Long is the best teacher I've taken in my 4 years at CofC. I've taken 3 of his classes. He's tough, and he'll challenge you, but he's fair. You have a lot of reading, but it's interesting and you discuss it in class. By far the best lecturer. If you want to learn something about POLS, take him, I especially recommend POLS - 405; FOOD.
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken, but also one that I actually looked forward to every day. Mark Long is an incredible instructor who really engages the students and makes them think. Heavy on reading and extremely hard tests, but still a very enjoyable class. One of the best teachers I've ever known.
Dr. Long is the best. He is always willing to help. Yes he does assign a lot of reading but you are in college and that is to be expected. You learn so much from his classes. Just go to class and do the reading and you will have no problem. Just be sure to 'stay abreast' of the readings.
I have had three classes with this professor, and am sad that I do not have room for him next semester. His classes are always very informative with a fun Irish accent! He is serious about his projects and the honor code, but as long as you do the readings you will be okay!
Requires A LOT of reading for POLS 367; arguably an interesting course, however if I wanted to spend 2/3 of the course reading about Sudan...I would have taken Sudan 101...not International Conflict...key there..."international." I personally would not take his course again...tests are EXTREMELY hard...no clue what to study for...BEWARE!!!
I don't recommend this class for fun. it requires a lot of reading, but other than that I learned a lot from this class.
Lots of reading for this class but both the readings and lectures are interesting. The tests are surprisingly difficult in that some mult choice ?s come out of left field (from the text or discussion). study the maps consistently and you will do decently well.
Mark Long is an amazing professor. I can't think of another class, experience, or whatever that expanded my world view as much as this class! Don't miss class, because although you have to do a lot of reading, every lecture is PACKED with additional info about just what causes current situations all over the world. INVALUABLE FOR EVERY STUDENT!!
If this is the only class you are taking then go ahead. Otherwise, he assigns about 200 pages to read per week which you must write papers along with. Not considerate. Not lenient. He manages to take a survey class to a master level. Requires at least 10-12 hours of work outside of class each week. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE UNLESS YOUR A GEO MINOR!!!
Requires a ton of reading from text and news sources. 2 research papers on news sources. I can't glean ANYTHING from his lectures, even though the tests are 99% lecture, 1% text. Memorization of maps is required. Great guy, though.
Dr. Long is a great man...He knows what he is talking about and seems to have great enthusiasm for the material in which he teaches. The down side is his work load. Everybody in this class complained about it. Twice as much as all my other classes combined. If you take him be prepared to work and have no time!
Dr. Long loves to teach just as much as he loves to make you read. The key to his class is reading and going to class. Good luck trying to understand his handwriting unfortunately decoder rings dont come in required course material....
Professor Long is a very difficult teacher. He expects a lot out of his students. There is intensive reading, quizzes, and research projects. The class is the equivalent of a graduate level class. Only take this class if you have to. Very nice guy but very hard teacher.
I agree that he is a very difficult professor, he expects a lot out of the students, but it is a senior-level college class. The big assignment is a 25 page research paper that was a pain in the ass but I felt like I learned so much about my topic. He is extremely helpful in office hours. Good guy, really challenges you.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY! Course load for a 100 level class is ridiculous. Completely unmoved by any excuse for missing class. Make-ups take an act of Congress. His lectures mimic indoctrination. Not unlike Creed in the amount of reading required.I did not find him to be as intelligent as others claim. Do yourself a favor and avoid his classes!!!
Dr. Long is a very thorough and enjoyable professor. I took his express II class and found it manageable. It's a very reading intensive class but if you do the reading and attend class you will do well.
his class is too hard!!! too much reading for a 200 level course. do not take him!!! he is a nice guy but the material is too much. maybe if it was the only class i was taking..
Far too difficult for a 100-level class. The exam questions come out of left field. You have to listen to everything he says in his lectures and hope what you wrote down is what will be on the exams. Two newspaper projects that are also very time consuming. Again, for a 104 class, he's a tough grader. Cool...but too hard and vague.
He is an awesome guy! The most reading I have ever had to do. The exams are hard too. If you are looking for a challenge take him. It is a lot of work but you really learn a lot if you listen and DO THE READINGS. If you go to him for help, he will be there for you.
There is way too much work for a 100 level course. His expectations are unreasonable. He is unhelpful, short in response to emails (if he even replies), sometimes unclear in class. He ALWAYS keeps you at least 2 minutes late. I've never written a bad review of a teacher before, but I couldn't not for this one. He's a power-tripping jerk.
Mark Long is by far the best professor I have ever had. Smart, fair, inspirational and helpful are only a few of the multitudes of qualities attributed to him. People bash his World Regional Geography course all the time. They are the same people that barely show up, do not do the readings, and sit in the back on their laptops the entire lecture.
Good to read the book, but the majority of test material comes from lectures (and you won't find it in the book). Practice the maps in advance and you should be ok. Helps to have a study buddy for the tests too. Also, you have 6 mandatory NYT papers (or an extra 2 for a better average) that are an absolute pain. Seriously a difficult class.
Dr. Long is a really good teacher. I basically typed down every word he said in class, and I still missed some key points. I learned a lot and he talks about things that are applicable to things outside the classroom. Make sure you type down everything he says. You never know if he will repeat something important that will probably be on his test.
Lots of work for a 100 level class, professor just talks and rambles on, all over the place. Very hard to pay attention
Um no. That is all I have to say. He is the WORST professor. He is defensive and rude, and dismisses everything that students say. He also acts like his class is the only class you're taking, which is annoying because this class is a mandatory freshman class, I didn't even sign up for it. Be prepared to do a lot of useless busy work that he assigns
If you like being overworked and having no explanation for your grade, this is the course for you . Very bias in his political views, and does his best to assert them on you. It can be annoying, especially after you have had little sleep from staying up to read the 150 pages assigned overnight.
This guy is a condescending professor who harasses you if you have an opinion different from his. He was my hardest class this semester for a REQUIRED freshman class that is supposed to be the easiest class you take at CofC. You'll have to read at least 100 pgs a night and "short" essays are 5 pgs, so Adderall is very helpful with this course.
Rambles on most of the class, hard to pay attention. Extremely hard tests
I am sad to see all of the recent negative reviews for Dr. Long because he is extremely knowledge and can teach you a lot. I recommend taking his class if you have even the slightest interest in geography, international studies, or current events. Do your readings, keep up with your work, go to class, and pay attention, and you will be fine!
Very engaging, organized, and intellectual professors I've ever had. Has a genuine interest in reception of what he is teaching. Professor Long also makes very clear that there are no questions left unanswered nor a concept unexplained.
Mark Long is still one of my favorite professors I have had. His lectures are awesome.
Long is a pretty amazing professor. His tests are tough so make sure you take in-depth lecture notes!!! Definitely memorize the map locations for the quizzes. His handwriting is illegible but his Irish accent is great to listen to.
Mark Long is a good professor overall, but has a few drawbacks. His lectures are usually interesting, but he tries too hard to sound "woke." You're graded on six papers and three exams, so take good notes and read the textbook. There's also a participation grade, so be sure to engage him in class or via e-mail.
Dr. Long's class is extremely interesting; however, there is hours upon hours of reading along with pop quizzes. His assignments are long, but reasonable in terms of difficulty grading. As long as you complete the readings and show up, you will do fine in class.
Be prepared to read extensively from the textbook. If you don't read or participate in class lectures, you can forget about getting a good grade. Studying is super important, and taking good lecture notes too.
If you have a passion for anything international, you will love taking POLI 104 with Professor Long. Very thought-provoking and engaging lectures. Attendance VERY important for this class as it is lecture heavy and note-taking heavy. Exams are on the harder side but will not go outside of what is clearly covered in class Good variety of assignments
Lectures are all over the place. Doesn't give any form of study guide. doesn't tell you anything about what he is looking for on tests or papers. Doesn't use school website. Syllabus is incredibly broad and not helpful
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. The class is so boring and the tests are so hard. He gives you so much information and you never know what to study for (doesn't give a study guide for midterm or final). You also have to have a subscription to the NY Times and write a paper on it every week (its harder than it sounds). Good luck!
Very harsh grader gives zero leeway and has horrible hand writing. I really loved the topic didn't think he was a bad guy but my grade did not reflect my effort and understanding of the material and that made me upset. He could do better at designing his grading structure.
I wouldn't recommend Professor Long to complete slackers because his tests are difficult and there are essays due every two weeks but he is one of the best professors I have ever had. I learned so much in his class and his lectures were interesting and usually easy to follow. One of my favorite professors I have had at the College of Charleston.
Worst mistake I have ever made. Capstone is supposed to be interesting and worth your time. This was the biggest waste of time and reading. We spent an entire semester writing BS papers that basically had nothing to do with our 30 page paper due at the end of the semester. Lots of unnecessary reading and useless guest speakers. Dont take him!!
Very passionate, funny, and approachable. Held us to a high standard and expected hard work but was very accessible outside of class for help. Took the time to learn our names, which in such a big class was difficult but made us feel very appreciated. Would love to take his political geography class; he's so knowledgable and loves what he does!
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE PROFESSOR LONG. He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He gives an outrageous amount of homework and papers for a base level class. He is not understanding whatsoever and if you make a mistake on anything on the rubric it's an automatic zero. Avoid at all costs if you enjoy being a happy person.
The only good thing was the textbook was free and online. His lectures are boring and long. Every week there's an essay due and it's impossible to get 100. The highest I got was 90. His tests are difficult, too (take NOTES. If you don't think it's important, RIGHT IT DOWN). He gives way too much assignments and work. I wish I never took him
WORST Professor I have ever had. This was supposed to be a geography course, instead he turned it into political lectures. Obviously very biased in his views and doesnt tolerate any views or ideas straying from his own. I had to email him many times over the course with questions and his short responses NEVER answered anything. Very frustrating.
Worst Professor I have ever had. I am in his Political Geography class. He is a harsh grader no matter how much effort you put into your work. I am probably going to withdraw from the class.
This professor was no doubt very knowledgeable and the class itself had good content however I was so bombarded with papers and extra assignments that I was left with no other option but to withdraw. Even upon speaking with him about this, he showed 0 compassion or understanding. No exceptions for late work.
He is great guy especially if you go to his office hours. He goes out of his way to help students IF THEY ARE INTERESTED AND TRY. I feel like he probably has no remorse for people who half ass. Lots of papers that are tough on grading but if you follow rubric correctly and talk to him you can make an A. Learned a lot from this class.
Quite possibly the worst professor I have ever had. My class was online and he assigned way more work than if we were in person. His is so vague and he acts like he is a genius but fails to point out important concepts and just confuses you. He gives terrible feedback and grades so harshly without any reasoning. Avoid him at all costs.
In retrospect, he is horrible and deplorable. I took his class as my last class to graduate. Him and dr o, are so unequipped to teach together. He failed me on the last class I needed; I went back and finished school (without any troubles). His teaching style is rambling. If my father was alive he would spit dr long out.
Very engaging. The exams can be difficult but he gives you an opportunity just before the exam to ask him to go over topics. The class is very rewarding if you put in the effort.
I really like Professor Long as a person, but his class was very difficult. I felt like I learned quite a lot from him. Hes a very smart guy and very systematic in his teaching. It is very easy to get distracted because its so lecture heavy. I recommend not handwriting notes, and definitely making quizlets for his tests. His papers are difficult.
Hard but thought provoking class. Only take if your really interested in the subject matter.
Dr. Long is a great teacher. This course is pretty straightforward, so if you are interested in geography and politics you will enjoy it. Lectures can be long, but they're engaging, and he is a tough grader, but if you work hard your grade will reflect that. Whatever you do, just make sure to write down EVERYTHING in your notes!
A horrible professor that gives way too much work for a 100-level course. Will assign at least 15 videos, voice threads, and textbook pages for you to read/watch and if you don't take good notes or don't write down the right thing, you won't do well on the quiz. If you don't have to take this class DONT TAKE IT.
The worst professor at college of charleston. Even after meeting with him he never made anything clear on what he wanted for papers. Quizzes were not based on the lectures, I don't even know where he got the questions from. Reported him to the board because of how awful he is, please do not take this man, he needs to be fired asap rocky.
This course was a pleasure to take. Dr. Long evidently spent a lot of time creating this online course. He has put plenty of measures in place to make sure you can pass this class, so ultimately it is up to you. You will have to write, discuss, and most importantly think, but such is the nature of a liberal arts class.
I really enjoyed Professor Long's POLI/GEOG 104 class, and I learned a lot of interesting things. I would honestly recommend it to anyone because it expands one's view of the world. Definitely show up to all lectures, participate, read the news, and turn in your papers ASAP. Don't be afraid to ask questions! - he is very nice and willing to help.
Definitely not an easy A to take in the summer. Be prepared to watch hours of random content only to get 75% on the quizzes.
Took his class online this summer. 82% of our grade are these insanely hard quizzes that the majority of the class stuggled to get above an 80 on. The class involves a lot of videos which are interesting but just very time consuming. Wish the class provided other ways to show understanding besides quizzes that are very specific and hard
I would not recommend this class to anyone.
If I had to choose between taking this course again with this man or sacrificing my firstborn, I would choose the latter.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! Worse professor I have ever taken, grades so harshly but good luck trying to figure out what his comments are! Needs to go back to kindergarten and learn how to write. Readings are 100+ pages for every class. Seriously, run for the hills.
Nice man, makes no sense when talking in class. There's no notes posted, and he talks way too fast, very harsh grader on papers. Don't take class, it's not the geography you're thinking of.
Get ready to be politically indoctrinated on a daily basis and not be allowed to have an opinion that differs from his. Weekly papers and tests that are impossible to study for. The textbook is completely useless as he does not teach from it and his lectures are completely unorganized. Best of luck to you if this is a required course for you.
This class is no easy A, especially online. Be prepared for tough quizzes and a heavy workload. However, the lectures are engaging, and the material is thought-provoking. To succeed, use resources like Unstuck study alongside the textbook and study sessions.
Very poor teaching style, he just lectures and refuses to put anything on the board unless it's a picture. He will argue he didn't give you a definition you used and you can expect to write a paper every week and can expect to have no clue what are on the first few tests He CURVED THE GRADE by up to 22 points on one test. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
AVOID AVOID AVOID We had 28 people starting and it ended with 5 and 2 failed, I dropped. AVOIDDDDDDDDD
Professor Long is an overall pretty good professor. He is very lecture heavy and is serious about taking 3-5 hours everyday to keep up with school work but overall his class was pretty easy and I would take it again. I guess the only thing that was difficult was all the lectures and other material we had to review but that got easier overtime.
