Avoid this professor. Although he is a very nice person, he is not a good math professor. More than 3/4 of the class was forced to drop because your grade is based off of the test. He does not prepare you for test and strictly follows the notes during lecture. Don't expect help.
Professor is very confusing and often doesn't give clear information until the day before the test. If attendance is any indication of how awful this guy teaches, my class of 25+ students dropped to half of that by the end of the semester. Avoid having this professor at all costs. You have to teach yourself the materials in order to complete work.
One of the nicest people I have ever met, but is a poor professor. Goes into rambles during class that give too much detail about things that really don't matter, so the entire class is confused by the end of the lecture. Avoid him if you struggle in math.
nice guy but a terrible teacher
He is a nice guy who loves math. There is always online homework and written homework gets turned in with each test. He gives guided notes and will gladly answer any questions you have. The tests are half multiple choice, so if you miss those you can't get the partial credit on those problems
I am usually fantastic at math, but not in this class. Most instructions are unclear and what is taught in class is totally different from the online assignments
Not very helpful, not clear at all with anything really. Teaches things in "his own way" which usually did nothing but confused the class. If you did great in High school math classes then you should be fine because most the material you can self-teach. But if you actually need instruction, look elsewhere.
I will admit that I am not the best when it comes to math, and to anyone else that is reading this that is like me do not take this professor. One thing that I couldn't understand was that the online homework had nothing to do with the test whatsoever. He wasn't able to clearly get his points across and I would often leave class confused.
All of the reviews here are super accurate. Dr. Mathison goes off on tangents all the time and talks about stuff that doesn't seem to matter. I'm making a high B because I teach myself all the material. There's a lot of homework to keep up with. The tests are relatively easy if you study. Definitely a course that requires a lot of work.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! He assigns way too much online homework that has nothing to do with the tests. He rambles about things that aren't important and goes off subject all the time.
While I admit this class was incredibly tough, Dr. Mathinson is an incredible person and he is more than willing to help you if you ask. But if you're someone who just wants to take the class and be done with it DO NOT take this professor. The man has a true passion for math and it reflects in his choices for test questions.
He is the toughest grader I have ever had, the first two tests were not multiple choice and he takes all or nothing, and if your work is wrong but the answer is right you wont get credit. His last two tests are multiple choice but dont think it gets easier. IF YOU ARE NOT GOOD AT MATH DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I've never had a professor that conducts a grading scheme like him. The tests are incredibly hard, I don't know if he wants to confuse students or if he is so smart he doesn't realize how confusing he really is. For the average person I don't recommend him. You need to be a stellar student to keep up with his class.
I had received all As my entire life until I received Mr. Mathison as a teacher. I was forced to Q drop the class even though I did every single homework and studied for every test like I always did. He spends time on things that do not matter at all to the lesson, and is extremely wordy when he teaches. I was about the 5th person to drop his class
Test are exceedingly difficult, DO NOT REFLECT HOMEWORK/RECOMMEND STUDYING MATERIAL and worth a large chunk of grade. I studied 2-3 hours a night, have passed this class before (in hs, didn't feel ready for calc 2) and still made a 70 test average. Be prepared to study 4-5 hours every night to make a B or A. Q-D b/c I was @ a low B & couldnt risk C
If you read this & still take this class you're exercising self-hate. Mathison is a good person but you'd be better off teaching yourself; If you didn't take calc in high school DO NOT LET THIS BE YOUR INTRO. Lectures tangents. Tests are more difficult than hw & he grades as if we are math majors. You can get points off for HOW work is shown.
The only reason I did well in his class is because I took Calculus in High School. He is a terrible teacher. Does not give you a test review and then puts things on the test that were not from the chapter we were learning. The class started with 30 and ended with 12.
This guy will literally refer to various equations as things. He confuses the entire class by the end of the lecture and will go into detail about simple things and will skim over the difficult things. Tons of online homework that doesn't have to do with the test. Had to Q/D because I was doing so bad. Class started with 30 and there's 8 people now
flies through lectures, doesn't give u notes, will take off partial credit for problems even if u still get the right answer but will not give partial credit if u do the work right but got the wrong answer, shows up late to class, gives no reviews for tests, takes over a week to grade the tests. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT take professor Mathison's math class if you are not naturally good at math. His lectures are awful, he speaks and moves very quickly. He gets frustrated when you ask him to slow down. He is an extremely tough grader and does not give partial credit on half worked problems. He also gives several hours of homework each night.
Matheson is genuinely a great person and excellent professor. He is so easy to understand and gives unlimited try's for the homework on MML which has saved me and given me the opportunity to correct my errors. He's so sweet and as doesn't overwhelm you with long lessons or too much information. He's personally my favorite Blinn math professor.
If I could give 0 stars I would! Never take!!!! Not helpful at all! Horrible attitude and does not care about students! Went in to question grading and was completely ignored! Unprofessional and rude! If you are looking for a professor who will understand and care about you and your concerns DO NOT TAKE HIM! So discouraged while taking this course!
He is very intelligent. To the point that he thinks that you should grasp the material as well as he does. During his lectures he uses an immense vocabulary and teaches at you. Rather than helping you understand the material. I had to drop the class because that tests were nothing like his lectures or homework.
Mathison is actually a good guy, contrary to the reviews. The class however, is SUPER hard. The tests usually have little to do with the homework you have to complete. Tests are super hard. The only thing that saved me in this class is the final which was easy and replaces your lowest test grade. If you end up with Mathison, STUDY HIS HANDOUTS
He is a nice guy but he teaches the material in an extremely confusing order. Even if you have taken the class before or even taken calculus in high school it is difficult to do well on his tests. He continuously changes how he chooses to grade tests and he even let his young daughter grade the multiple choice. About half my class had to Q-drop.
Very sweet man. If you have taken higher math classes such as calculus in high school this class is a piece of cake. It does not require much homework time out of class which is good if you are strong in math and just need the credit. Other friends in my class that had not taken harder maths really struggled a lot. Depends on prior math knowledge.
Don't take this teacher, hard to understand. I had to drop this class and I was nearly the last one left. We started with over 30 people and every but four dropped.
By far and away the best math professor I have ever had, Dr Mathison is an outstanding professor. He cares about his students, is very lenient on assignments, and is very understanding. I had an extremely tough semester while in his class outside of the classroom and he was more than happy to help me out and keep me caught up on things. 10/10
Professor Mathinson is a nice man but his class is extremely difficult. If you struggled in math before calc this class will not be easy. He gives pop quizzes that are sometimes over things he hasn't taught yet. His tests are half multiple choice, half short answer and the multiple choice are very difficult. There is no extra credit.
Contrary to the reviews, in recent years his classes have become much less difficult. I took him and ended up with an A as did most of my class! Very easy just study the handouts.
I took Mathison for 1324 for my first semester of college. His class was the only one I did poorly in due to his teaching skills. He teaches very quickly. Also, beware of assignments that you have to turn in to his office. He will not let you turn it in even 5 minuets after the time it is due. (no exaggeration here) Do not take this class.
Dr. Mathison is nice and caring but he is very reliant on practically anything electronic in order to teach. There are simply dozens of other easier ways to teach math. Combined with online womework and small homeowork sheets, his class and teaching method just feels very cluttered and it is hard to keep up unless you get outside tutoring or help
All he does is do the problems, not go over them or explain why, he just answers them. Then when the test comes around he picks the hardest problems that require master level understanding of the material and is very short handed when it comes to partial credit. The homework consists of many online questions as well as weekly textbook homeworks.
never ever take this professor ever. homework grades practically dont count and he is completely unreasonable when it comes to grading. if you do take this class and you dont get the first lesson, just drop because it only gets worse
Overall good prof. Super friendly. Some of his explanations aren't amazing but the notes he provides is enough to understand. 4 tests each worth 12.5% of cumulative grade. Online homework has unlimited attempts so people should get a 100 on that but students tend not put in the effort. Easy to pass if you put in any effort at all.
hes horrible. I have never failed or even gotten a C in a class before. I was a 4.0 gpa student in high school. He does not care about the class and does not know how to teach. he is very lazy. most students in my class have below a 50. i dont know how that is okay to him. he gives nothing out for us to study for tests. worst teacher ever.
I took calculus in Highschool. It has been almost 2 years since then. He is absolutely the laziest teacher in the world. You can ask him a question and he just looks at you like you are dumb. He once told the class, after everyone in the class failed an exam, that most people aren't intellectually capable of taking this class.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. I was a 4.0 student, and I never struggled with a class so much until I took this guy. At the beginning of the class, we hada full classroom. Once we hit the end of the semester, we were down to NINE STUDENTS!! He teaches nothing that is on the test, and all the problems on the test are impossible.
Dr. Mathison is one of the most unclear and hardest teachers I have ever had. His notes aren't really notes, and the way he explains concepts only make sense to him. You really have to teach yourself the lessons at home. Do not take this class if you are trying to transfer to Texas A&M. I wish I could say more about how horrible this class is.
"Dr." Mathison reminds me of one of my hs teachers, but he's a lot worse. His teaching style didn't seem much as teaching but lectures and giving answers. He doesn't explain or brief explanation on solving problems. IF you ever ask him questions, he either would seem to get upset and answer vaguely.
By far the worst teacher I have had at Blinn. He gives lectures every class and has no idea how to teach a class that is new to the material. I will admit some students do have As in his class but if you are anything like me and barely struggle with math (4.0 GPA not including this class) than DO NOT take this class because you will fail.
Mathison is a nice person however doesn't teach well at all. The only way to pass is if you're somewhat decent at math because more than half the time you will be teaching yourself. If you don't understand him on the first day of notes LEAVE it only gets worse!!!
The worst teacher/professor I have ever had. DO NOT take him! I am decent at math and had to drop the class because I couldnt pass. He doesnt help students out. You are literally on your own. Tons of impossible homework. Tests are insanely hard. If you dont get it there is no way you will pass the test. Each test gets harder as semester goes by
Avoid this guy at all costs, his tests are freaking hard.
I'm not sure how this dude has a job. Worst professor I've ever had. He gives you a ton of unnecessary homework, and very difficult tests. Avoid this guy at all costs, your GPA will thank you.
Professor Mathison is the most condescending professor, tried to give him a chance in the beginning and stuck it out until the drop date. He grades off of opinion and is extremely power-hungry. He did not excuse two of my absences for a funeral and then threatened to drop me, had to talk to the Dean about him. Gave this class 150% and had a 65
Worst professor ever. Heavy tests, ton of homeworks, and always give you a challenge questions on the tests, nothing similar from his note. Take him --> ready to fail.
FIVE LETTERS. AWFUL.
Nice guy, but very unclear when lecturing. Moves through the material quickly and if you ask questions his response usually isn't any more helpful. Expect to teach yourself a lot in this class. He gives lots of MyMathLab homework and a packet that goes along with the units. He grades so harshly and will take off for literally anything.
Professor Mathison is easily the worst professor I've ever had. His lectures are completely useless and when asked questions he replies with passive agressive comments and doesn't even answer the question most of the time. My class started out with nearly 40 students and we're down to 12. He doesn't round, even when its .6 or higher. Do not take.
Worst prof Ive ever had, stay away
Worst professor I have ever had. He gives you a ton of homework. MyMathLab homework and a TON of paper homework. His lectures are completely useless and he makes no sense during them. I had to teach myself throughout the whole semester. He takes attendance very seriously. The notes make no sense and he is a harsh grader. Do not take him!!
This was by far the most difficult class I have ever taken and by far the most difficult professor I have ever had. My class started out with 35 + students and ended the semester with 7 people. The only thing that saved me from failing was his final exam which was suprisingly easy, but the other tests and assignments are not! LOTS of homework!
The thing that really bothered me was that he was terrible at explaining material. It was very easy to lose interest in what he was saying and I usually ended up having to each myself after class. There was also so much homework (paper and mymathlab) and he graded every little thing on the paper ones. There was no reviews. Don't take him If you can
TERRIBLE. His lectures are so bad and I understood nothing. He can be passive aggressive with his answers which can get very annoying. Lots of homework and NOT an easy professor.
I needed calculus to transfer and this professor made it absolutely impossible. I have never struggled with math before and his class was unbearable. Lectures made no sense, when asked to explain he explicitly said that he wouldnt, and does irrelevant weekly pop quizzes. If you want to pass this class please take another professor.
WORST PROF EVER. Do not take this guy. His lectures are long and boring and he offers no to little feedback. I thought taking him wouldn't be as bad as his reviews were but I was completely wrong. I failed every test and I am a 4.0 student. Do yourself a favor and drop him immediately if you get him.
I took this class last semester and he is the worst professor I have ever had. He expects you to follow along and know exactly what to do. He rarely lets his students ask questions. I asked multiple questions and he told me they were to hard to answer in class. When i asked for help after class he would scoff. I dont even know how i passed!
So I loved math when I was in high school. I am a strong A person when it comes to math classes. But when I registered for this class, I had no idea that I would get a professor who just didn't care about his students. Never taught the lessons. Expects you to learn it on your own. Annoying. Very aggressive. Doesn't know how to teach. Do not do it!
He is a really nice guy and always emailed back quickly. His class was difficult because it was in 8 weeks so there was always homework but if you manage your time right you will be fine.
I thought this course was going to be easy after taking AP Calc in high school, however it was not. Professor Mathison grades the homework given very harshly and does not give extra credit. There are also my math lab quizzes due everyday as well as long tests every week in the 8 week course format.
He is a great prof! Ready these reviews are very disappointing. If you have an ounce of previous math knowledge this class will be cake for you. Dr. Mathison is very well organized and once you figure out the system (which is not that confusing) you will be just fine. Take this class if you have faith that you are a good student.
His lectures are SO long and the class is very difficult. Not recommended
His lectures are super long, and he takes forever to get to the point. The course load is a lot considering the amount of time you have, gave 5-7 assignments a week. He's also a super hard grader and will count off for the smallest things like not putting pages in order. All in all avoid at all cost find someone else if you want a good grade.
Professor was awful. Lectures were hours long and he just sucks at teaching. I had to get a tutor 6 hours a week to teach me everything, which was expensive. I got a good grade but honestly didn't even learn 1 thing from him. I took an 8 week class and we had a test every friday which is not normal. Cant remembe if proctored or not but dont believe
During Lectures, Mr. Mathison isn't very thorough or specific, completely opposite as to what he is when grading homework/tests. He teaches barely 6 problems in class and assigns a ton of homework and doesn't grade half of it, and he takes a month to grade the homework he decides to grade. He just isn't cut out to be a professor as a college level
Long lectures. Professor will draw 15 graphs on what something will not look like. Lots of textbook problems that do not look anything like the 2 problems that he does in class. Expect to do the rest of the in-class problems, outside of class because he talks too much about one thing so he ends up not finishing the lecture.
Do not take this class. He is a nice guy but the worst teacher I have ever had. Lectures make no sense and when someone has a question, he will give passive aggressive answers to them which makes people not want to ask questions. Not what a professor should make a student feel like. He basically ruined my degree plan with his style of teaching.
He is just not a very good teacher. He has long lectures every class and does not finish the lessons half the time as he goes off on tangents about things that do not have anything to do with the lesson. Also, if you think you will get help from his office hours you are wrong. If you have a choice in professors, he should be your last choice.
Extraneous amounts of homework, that don't even get graded. Good luck learning anything in lecture as he is incapable of explaining anything and will utilize 2 hours to tell you what NOT to do, and then spend 5 minutes telling you what to do, in a way that does not reflect exams or homework. He is useless in office hours. Avoid like the plague.
Some pros: clear about what he wants, tests are simple enough, organized, replies quickly to emails. Cons: Goes on tangents, long lectures, can come off as passive aggressive, lots of homework. Overall not a bad class if you stay on top of work and use the lecture packet for practice. Type of class where you can get an A if you work for it.
Why does this guy even teach for TEAB students? LONG lectures, SO MUCH HOMEWORK, and tests are very difficult till the 4th exam. His class literally made me pull all nighters, and that's probably what got me to a decent grade. But if you want a good grade or don't have prior calculus knowledge, you better q drop. Don't take the risk like I did.
This was the very first college class I ever took when I got to Blinn and I can say he made me call m y mom crying because I learned nothing in lecture. Then came home and cried because I didn't know what to do and no examples to help me. Staying up late trying to finish endless amounts of homework. If you get his class drop, your gpa will thank me
Teach tries to be good but fails to be a good teacher, also way too much hw
DO NOT TAKE MARK MATHISON AS A PROF HE IS THE WORST MATH TEACHER AT BLINN YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
I didnt know it was possible to make the power rule sound complicated until I took this class. If you plan to take him you need to have a solid understanding of the material of this course BEFORE you take it if you want to pass.
His lectures are long & never finishes them during class, however he does post the recordings. The notes are nothing like the course packets homework's & When I receive the assignment back it is just lines and circles, so I have no idea how to correct my work. He goes on long tangents over nothing so you would need outside resources to pass.
He tends to get sidetracked during the lecture and sometimes will focus on one thing for a too long so you get less application problems. I recommend going to each class because on the exam he likes the work to be done a specific way and wont give points if its not like his work. However he is nice and will help you if you go to office hours.
He is the worst professor I have dealt with at Blinn. at the start of the semester, my class consisted of 30 students fast forward to the final exam three students remained including myself. The only reason I didn't drop the class was due to the fact that I was stubborn. Please do not read the comments and think that you're different.
Just don't. Just drop out if you can.
It's not impossible to do well in this class, but you have to be very dedicated. His lectures drone on and on and never really explain anything that well. If he does example problems he will just do them himself very quickly without giving you the opportunity to try for yourself. Not a nice person either.
Absolutely terrible teacher. Makes class painful to attend. I ended up not attending class anymore and teaching myself every concept. Avoid at all costs for Calc 2
Great professor, lectures are kinda of long but helps with understanding the material and having all the necessary tools to pass all the test and homeworks. Would take again and recommend to anyone who wants an achievable A in math.
I took Mathison during my first semester of college and it made me want to literally drop out of all education for the rest of my life. We started with about 30 kids in the class and ended the semester with only 11 students (most of them barely passing). If you can help it, don't even look at his name during registration, your GPA will drop.
This professor has gone possibly the worst route I have ever seen in his teaching his lessons are complicated and only the basics you have to learn through homework with little info and at the beginning of class he gives quick checks sometimes over info which hasn't been taught and graded and his tests are rarely finished let alone passed by anyone
Very frustrating teacher, grades his homework very harshly. I was sick for a week, and he wanted to make me come in and take the test with a 103 fever. He gave me zeros on all assignments, and was not understanding at all. Be prepared to spend a ridiculous amount of time doing homework that is way harder than anything covered during his lectures.
Professor Mathison makes learning math easy. Although his lectures can be very boring and long, the material is covered well for the tests. He gives lots of homework but the course packet homework prepares you well for the exam. Exam is basic and easy. Attend lectures because he likes things to be done a certain way.
This was his first time teaching 1316 - Trigonometry, an 8-week course. I would've done better in a 16-week course because he gave so much homework. There would be about 9-6 sets of homework each week and it was very hard to understand one topic before having to move on to the next. I wouldn't take this professor again, but he was a nice guy!
Be prepared to do A LOT of work. It is nice that he posts the lectures online but I did a lot of the learning on my own. I would not take him if I had not already taken a lot of prerequisites in high school. If you were not great in math classes in high school, I would suggest taking another professor. He goes off on a lot of unnecessary tangents.
Professor Mathison was difficult to work with. I have never been so overwhelmed with homework in my life. The lectures were horrible to sit through and explained nothing over the concepts. The tests were not like the homework at all. There was one extra credit assignment at the end not worth much. His class affected my mental and physical health.
Professor Mathison's class was very homework heavy. This was the most homework I've ever had, and I was so overwhelmed all the time. His lectures were heavy, and difficult to understand. I don't recommend taking his class as he didn't really explain things well and made the class impossible to understand. Just avoid him or plan to drop.
Had Dr. Mathison for an 8-week course, prepare for an exam every other week. If you have some kind of conflict or internet problems and you can't submit work, he will not work with you. Be prepared to make a huge time commitment for a lot of homework. Lectures are prerecorded so you should only have to go to class on exam days. Wouldn't recommend.
He grades homework based on how well you draw your integrals. If that doesn't tell you what you need to hear I don't know what will.
This guy makes test-taking a nightmare. He grades incredibly tough & gives 0 extra credit. There are random quick-checks that he does, so you have to show up or your grade will falter, even though you could probably learn better outside of class since he rambles and skips steps in his explanations. If you get stuck with him, good luck...
Overall very bad professor. For every lecture, he would just read through a script and if anyone had a question he would use the I don't know card. He gives a lot of homework and grades them very hard. Not only does he grade the homework hard he also grades the test hard as well. No test reviews or extra credit. Just a really bad prof.
He gives no indication as to what you need to work on before the exams. He makes you email him or go to office hours for everything. Avoid his class if you don't want 50+ questions of homework every week, that he doesn't even grade until finals week. Would NOT recommend.
He explained the most basic and simple concepts in the most complex and confusing way possible. He assigned random pop quizzes and the homework was impossible. I spent 3-4 hours every night and got nowhere. He would also count off on the hw if you did not show work in a v specific way! Save your GPA and don't take this class. (8-week 1316 class)
He never finished a lecture in class leaving us to have to watch his videos outside of class. Also if you didn't do it his way you would get points off (even if you got the correct answer) so no using youtube videos to help. The workload is insane for a 3 hour class. He assigns three separate types of homework that will take multiple hours each.
AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS! He explains things in the most convoluted and confusing way possible, he never finishes his lectures yet he still expects you to know the material for the homework, and the amount of homework he assigns is absurd for a 3 hour class.
Professor Mathison is a very kind professor and willing to help. However, I recommend taking this class with someone else. He assigns 5+ pages of homework per week, plus online homework. He often did not finish his lectures during class, so you are responsible for learning the material outside of class.
Awful professor
Awesome class! All lectures were recorded and posted. We were graded with 4 exams at 50% and homework in two categories at 15% each, final was 20%. I only had to email him a few times and he always responded really quick. He seemed like he cared about out workload and time to do homework. He bumped up my grade at the end and offered extra credit!
This professor was the reason I signed up for and use Rate My Professor. I took him Fall 2021, and by the time I Q-Dropped, over half of the class had too. Extremely long winded, over complicated lectures. Way too much homework in way too little time. My only good experience is when I asked him if I should drop after exam 2, and he said yes.
If it is your first time taking calculus, I would not recommend professor Mathison, The only people who succeeded in his class were people who had taken calculus prior to it and they didn't even pay attention to his lectures and just went off past information because he's that bad. Everybody else ended up dropping and he grades way too hard.
Do not take this professor. He assigns so much homework, and he takes off points for the littlest things. Since it was an 8-week course, there were exams every other week. He did not offer much help during office hours. He would never finish lectures, so be ready to teach yourself. I had tutoring 1-2 times a week. Nice guy, but horrible professor
Run away. If you are bad at math or do not have a lot of time on your hands, do not take this class. I was constantly doing math all the time and even with the work I was putting in, my grades were horrible so I Q dropped. He lectures for the full 3 hours and doesn't let you leave early ever. I am normally decent at math but this class killed me.
Do not take this class unless you're willing to take a Q-drop. I took this in an 8-week format, and most of the class dropped within 2 weeks. There is a test every other week, and an unusual amount of homework assigned.
Horrible professor. My prof dropped the class and everyone got moved to this guys class (ig bc nobody wanted to take him). There is a stupid amount of homework (3 long and difficult assignments due per week). If you can delay, switch to a different class, or take it over the winter I recommend you do that. Insanely tough grader, Nonsense lectures.
I dropped the class 4 weeks in and half the class had dropped at this point. He rambled the whole class and seemed like he did not know what he was doing. Seemed like this was his first time taking 1324 as well. I have always done well in math until this class. Had a new professor and it was a breeze.
Dropped his class and took it over the winter with a better professor. Side by side the winter class was about 1/3 of the work. No dropbox assignments (~3 worksheets a week) and the MMLs were like 5 questions on average instead of 20+. Tests were easier, and even though it was an online class I comprehended the material much more thoroughly.
His class is definitely not easy but if you're decent at math and willing to work really hard getting an A is possible. He is pretty strict grader and there is a ton of homework. Some of his explanations are lengthy and hard to follow. I would 100% recommend emailing him questions, he would answer me even at 10:30 pm with lengthy advice.
Just do all the homework, and you'll be fine. Easy if you study.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR amount of homework for this class was excruciating, 9 page worksheet and 30 free response questions online each class. A family member died and I missed 3 homework assignments as I was out of the country and he yelled at me and told me it was my fault my grade is this bad and there was nothing I could do to fix it
Absolute worst professor on this planet. i highly suggest dropping the class immediately if u have him because you will not pass. Mans has no teaching skills whatsoever. took 2 hours to explain a topic where a 20 minute youtube video explained far better than this guy could ever. needs to get that teaching certificate revoked immediately.
Just look at his rating... avoid this class. If you got placed in it for TEAB drop or change prof on first day. People getting placed in his class is the only reason he still has a job.
BRO WAS BUNS!!! How do you teach a 3-hour class and still not explain anything about the lessons??? You might as well just teach yourself because he is literally a waste of brain power, but even at that point it is not worth it because his test are nothing like the 1 example he gives us. Save yourself and don't take this.. I wish I didn't!!!
look at his rating. if you get placed in his class forcefully like me, drop the class and take another in its place when you can. No assignment syllabus (just lecture dates and topic) Went to tutoring 2-3 times a week through upswing Rough grading Large time commitment worst teacher on campus Doesn't break down lessons in an understandable manner
Where do I even begin. Mark Mathison is not a terrible man or human being for that matter, but he was a terrible, terrible prof. His lectures are completely useless. Attendance is mandatory for pop quizzes given at random. If you have this guy leave and save yourself. If not possible, become best friends with Professor Leonard. WORST EXPERIENCE!
Although I do not believe he is a bad person, this teacher, to be quite frank, is awful. He is monotone and does not stop going down rabbit trails. I was able to receive an okay grade in his class by teaching myself, but this is not sustainable. As I move in to harder classes I pray that I receive a better professor. Advice: DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE.
I really enjoyed Professor Mathison as a person, but don't get me wrong, If you look at most of the ratings, notice how they all are drop/withdrawals, C's, or the occasional B's. His lectures are useless and even his prerecorded videos. If you enjoy doing a math lab and three pages of homework for each subject, then take this class!
Great guy, but a-lot of his classes were teaching myself via doing the 3-5 pages of homework per class. If I got lost on it then I'd wait for him to cover it in about 2 hours. Many people stopped going halfway through to learn via the skippable videos, and I can't say I blame them. The concepts were pretty easy but the homework- god the homework.
He didn't answer questions clearly and wasn't open to other methods or ideas. He was a very kind person but as a proffessor he has a monotone voice and does not relate to why his students are struggling. He his a very tough grader, and will cross out work if it is not done his way.
horrid. the way I had to fight tooth and nail for an A. As a freshman, I literally had a breakdown in my room and sobbed- my first-ever college exam failed. professor literally did not care at all about you or your learning. yapped for three hours nonsensically. I hate giving a bad review, but no- save yourself the breakdown!! xoxo
He is a very kind man, but his lectures are very hard to listen to. He isn't engaging in class however, if you take time to ask questions after or email him, he will be happy to assist. Tests are fair but I would recommend relearning calc if you have him even if you have taken AP Calc AB/BC, because the grades depend on work rather than your answer
Honestly I read the reviews coming in and thought wow maybe people are just harsh, then I got in class. Not only is he the worst lecturer I've potentially ever had to listen to he just doesn't even explain that much and just rambles. He is really just not good at teaching. He is a good person, not teacher.
Lot of work 15% of the grade was online homework, pretty helpful can redo the concept but with different numbers. There was paper homework that he graded much harsher worth 15% of the grade. 50% of the grade was based on 4 exams. Final worth 20%. He does not round up I had a 89.87 before the final and barely managed to get a 90.26 with the final
Avoid this professor if possible. The workload is brutal, with lengthy assignments due weekly. Lectures can be hard to follow. However, emailing the professor for help can be surprisingly effective. Unstuck ai and other study aids may be lifesavers in this course.
Do not take him.
When I read this rate my professor page before first day of class I was terrified. But every poor characteristic I read in this feed he seems to have put in effort to fix. He is the most helpful and caring teacher I've had in my life. Textbook hw is now extra credit, lectures are fire. He'll take hours out of his day to help anyone.
the mathison couple needs to stop teaching. ive had both teachers and hated them equally.
This professor is extremely nice, but absolutely can not teach. His teaches from his own script of notes, but he rarely finishes the notes in class and expects you to fully understand the topics with his minimal explanation. If you have any gaps in your math knowledge, this class will be extremely difficult. Not impossible, but extremely difficult.
Makes your life as hard as possible
ok hes a nice guy BUT WHEN IT COMES TO TEACHING, he yaps sm and goes off sm irrelevant tangents. He never finishes lecture/lecture notes and takes such a mf long time to explain every single thing. DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY AT ANY COSTS!! Even if you score a 85, it will got to a 70, he is super picky, its very "my way or the highway"
He does not deserve this low of a rating. His lectures are not great but he is such a nice guy and helps his students to the absolute best of his ability when asked a question. His lectures can be slow but it's because he is very theory based and a lot of kids just want to get straight to the methods for solving problems. Decently tough grader.
Drop this class if you have it as an 8am. (Not hard) attendance quizzes in class, long lectures, lots of homework. There is extra credit if you do a LOT of extra *handwritten* homework. You can definitely pass this class if you put in the effort, but don't prepare for an A.
Dr. Mathison is a very caring human and truly is there to help when you need him. He makes it very easy to miss class and still be able to stay on top of the content. He records every lecture and posts it right after which is super helpful when studying and needing to go back to his explanation. There is a lot of homework and assignments.
Do not take this professor!! He rarely would ever teach because he talks about everything BUT math. Then he would have us watch videos online because "we ran out of time" meanwhile he could have easily fit it into our class time. I had to drop because there was no way I was going finish with a decent grade.
For 1325 his lectures are long. His voice is a bit too monotone; I find it hard to sit for 3 hours and focus. So much homework, 12-18 hrs a week, but you'll spend additional time studying. Plan to essentially self-teach. The exams are harder than quizzes or homeworks, with difficult wording.
Mathison is a nice guy but he's extremely bad at lecturing. Be prepared to do a LOT of textbook homework(which doesn't count for any credit). Also very nitpicky with notation when grading your work.
Mr.Mathison confuses you with the information he teaches. I had already taken Calc BC in high school, but the way he taught calculus completely confused me. He does surprise quick checks that could hurt your grade. He is an insanely tough grader. If you don't do things the way he wants, you don't get full points.
very test heavy. his lectures are very monotone and uninteresting and likes to rambles. no extra credit. sometimes in person quiz and can't make up. not alot of buffer grade if u dont do well on the tests. no review for the tests :( i dont recommend him
Dr. Mathison is a good guy, but his lectures were extremely boring and he would often spend way too much time on small things. The class is very test heavy, each exam is worth 15% of your grade including the Final Exam. He does drop some homework and in-class participation grades, but the difference is only a few points max.
No. No. No. DO NOT Take this professor especially if you don't have prior Calculus experience or don't feel strong in your calculus skill. The only people who did ok this class took calc before... During random lectures, there are attendance checks that you cannot make up. It doesn't help that he is a boring lecturer and very monotone. TEST HEAVY.
I do not reccomend. At all.
Boring lectures and strict grader, but you'll be fine if you actually put the work in. Pay attention in class/take notes. If you miss class, it's ok bc he records and posts all his lectures, but you might miss a quick check but missing one wouldn't kill your grade. Textbook HW is a lot but optional, but doing it ALL is the main reason I got an A.
Grade is 75% exams. I had no calculus background, and the only people who succeeded took calculus before. He docked marks off my exam for writing "= DNE" and not "DNE". TEAB students are cursed with his class as no one willingly registers for it. I had 4.0 in HS, and first semester into college I feel defeated. Good luck if he's you're only option!
Bad teacher, good person. Here's how to succeed: if you pay attention to his lectures (which you really shouldn't imo) he just teaches whats in the textbook + yapping. Reading the textbook is better than listening, also do loads of the chapter review problems before the test. You can finish with a B but his SUPER picky grading makes an A hard.
Lectures do NOT make sense. I didn't take calculus before, and basically had to learn everythign on my own. Grading's horrendous. Midterms are 60%, and he doesn't drop any of them. More than 1/2 the exam is true-false and explanation-related rather than calculations. Barely passed with a 70 in the midterms, even when I thought I did REALLY well.
I took Calc in high school and got an A; took it with him and got a C. He can't teach or explain anything for the life of him, and he yaps about stuff that isn't relevant to the course. Don't waste your time or money with this guy, and never forget it's Dr. Mathison, not Mr. Mathison. Good luck future TEAB students—worst decision of my life.
He's a nice guy, but not a very good professor. Will go on tangents about irrelevant things during lecture and will often rush towards the end of lecture to wrap up everything. Tough grader, will take points off for the smallest things. Don't skip class, because he will do random quick checks, that if you miss, will bring your grade down.
