Highly recommended. He is not as picky about grammer as some other professors are which makes his essays easier. Just do your work and show up on time to get A or B.

Mr. Mattoon is a good professor. He is intertaining and clear about assignments. He does not tolerate tardy's or absences but if you tell him you will be absent ahead of time he works with you. He also does not tolerate any disruptions in class. If you do your work and can follow directions this class will be easy.

Very cool teacher; however, don't be absent because he does not accept late work. Pretty straightforward about assignments and gives some extra credit (don't expect too much). Just do the assignments and homeworks in order to pass.

You'll be fine just as long as you do your homework and READINGS!!!! I got an A+ in this class and I highly recommend him. He is also very helpful and explains very cleary what the homework or essays are about.

If you want to learn something productive, take this teacher! He's friendly and helpful, although he has high expectations of your work! If you need clarification, he'll help you out. Attend class regularly, turn in assignments on time, and you should get a a good grade.

I have never really done well in english classes, from 68 to 1a i would simply pass. I am not done with his class yet, but it is the first time ive seen my essay score a B...and i am mighty proud. English is not my second language, so from that alone, I am sure that if you like english and a really good writer, He is a good professor to pick for 1c

Mark was over all a great teacher. I took, and dropped, this same class at Rio Hondo and this was a million times better. He has really interesting, relevant discussions, always willing to help, and is over all a really nice guy. Some of the essays are just a little confusing, but his work is usually about quality, not quantity.

He is an excellent professor. Probably the best English teacher I've ever had in terms of teaching. He respects other people's opinions and will always listen to what you have to say. He is extremely helpful when you ask him for help. He'll let you rewrite 1 essay for a higher grade and he'll tell you exactly what he wants.

This guy is good, you will learn. Its interesting and he has a great curriculum for students where you always stay into the topic. The best teacher I had at mt sac.

Mark is the most awesome english teacher i have ever had.I got an A in this class but i did every single homework assignment and did very good on my essays. and im not that good at writing essays, but with Mark's help you will succeed. He is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! take him, you wont regret it.

Mark was great. I took him for fall 08. if you attend all of his classes and do your best in your assignments you will get a good grade, ive never gotten a grade higher than a C and i acctually got a B inhis class. Im deff going to take him for Eng 1c. his readings are very intresting, and are very helpfull for the assignments.

Do all of his work! he is very helpful with essays and explains in detail exactly what he wants. Recommend him if you want to get a good grade and be a better writer.

took in summer 08 very hard as papers due every week plus extra assignments, if you can take in spring or fall you wont have a problem, essays are interesting to keep us on our toes which i likes, simple tests, worth taking. struggled somewhat but got a B and even let me re do a low grade essay.

Professor Mattoon is a great English teacher. Yes, the class is fast-paced (I took him for Winter '09), but his assignments are interesting and so are his lectures. He is fair and reasonable, too. Not very hard at grading and extra credit is given. He has a good sense of humour and is very approachable. Highly recommended.

Just took his ENG1C class fall of 2010, and received an A, which i owe it all to mr. mattoon!! He's very thorough and helpful in his lectures. Overall a really nice genuine teacher. oh, and I really wasn't great in writing, but learned lots from his class. just take him!

I first took him for English 1A and liked him so much that I took him again for 1C. He is an exceptional teacher and I highly recommend taking him. If you're looking for an easy A though, look elsewhere. You have to work hard for it.

Professor Mattoon is truly a great English professor. He thoroughly presents all topics and gives ample time to prepare and write the three essays that are required for class. Preparation is required for the in-class midterm and final essays but an A is very achievable. He really cares about his students and gives extra credit opportunities.

Professor Mattoon is awesome!!! If your looking for a professor who is easy and rarely shows up then he's not for you, you have to earn your grade in his class, but if you give yourself plenty of time to plan your essays, it is possible to get an A.Overall, he was great!!!

...best english professor i had at mt sac...he taught me more about writing than i ever thought possible...the homework readings are only a page or two with a couple that were longer...read them ...write on them .... your essay are from the readings ...6 page research paper...with plenty of classroom work put to it ...

Great class. Helped my writing a lot. Quite a lot of reading and writing but he prepares you adequately. Research paper is kind of a drag but he prepares you for that as well. Interesting choice of reading material and he tries to be humorous. A bit anal and picky about his syllabus and your writing, but a good guy!

Not too bad. I hate english and got an A. As with any english class, just include in the essay whatever the professor asks for. Took 1C over winter. 5 essays total, 3 out of class 2 in class.

prior to taking english 1A, honestly, i wasn't really enthusiastic about it. But Professor Mattoon completely rejuvenated my interest for english. He's straightfoward,thorough with what he says,SUPER chill, doesn't expect much from you, and has a witty sense of humor. He's also a really good guy if you get to know him. Highly recommended.

His lectures are pretty clear and easy to follow, homeworks are straight forward. His comments on your essays are helpful. A nice professor, maybe not the easiest, but you would definetly learn something from him.

Professor Mattoon is very helpful and clear. Not only does he explains the assigned essays, he is willing to answer any questions through email.Yes, he does require 3 in-class written essays and 3 take-home essays. At the end, a six page research paper is due on top of that. Overall, a funny and clear teacher. IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS BY TAKING HIM!

He is a very laid back professor but requires a lot of work, in-class and homework. I went through periods of easy work loads and other times felt very overwhelmed but all the work required.

Mattoon is a great professor. Always willing to help with any questions you have, but this is not an easy class. Gives feedback on every exam and shows your strengths and areas you can improve in to make your writing better. Class consisted of 5 exam papers, 1 Research paper, and 1 final. You will definitely become a better writer so take him!

I took his class in winter. 3 six page essays, 1 in-class midterm essay, and a take home final essay. Read the task books and be prepared to write about similar topics. Read "Utopia" by Thomas More . He is a great professor, but makes you work for your grade. Highly recommend if you actually want to learn something instead of trying to get by.

Mattoon is hilarious, extremely kind and understanding. His class helped me to become a better writer and was the most informative and engaging english course I have ever enrolled in. His midterm exam (not essay) and final were a bit tough, but papers are graded fairly. Some group activities, lot of writing (obviously), but he is helpful and clear.

Prof is very caring and genuinely enjoys teaching. He always gives interesting stories/facts during his lectures. Usually before an essay, he sets time aside during class to let you talk to him about your essay. In that time, he helps you plan your essay and gives you resources you can use. His exams aren't too bad. Just follow his study guide.

Many groups acitives in class. 4 essays, 1 in-class writing, 2 exams, 1 presentation about utopia. So many articles for reading and discuss in class but the topic of artcicles are good. If you follow what the professor want you to do, you would easy to pass.

This was my first English class since 2003 and I was terrified. I spoke to Mr. Mattoon and he gave me the courage to continue with the class. You have to work for your grade in this class but it's fun. He is a great teacher and is always available to talk about your essays and topics. I got an "A" in the class.

His class was great. I really recommend. Kinda a lot of papers but thats also cause I took his class in the summer so it was squished. I messed up on my first paper and he let me fix it without penalty. Memorize the stuff he reviews before the final. He gives extra credit too. His final was the easiest thing ever.

Professor Mattoon genuinely cares about your success. He is funny and helpful. I like that he does a lot of group work so you get to know your classmates and makes for a more comfortable atmosphere. I would absolutely recommend his classes. Do your work, ask questions and you will be fine.

Unfortunately, our class got transitioned online, which was an L on our part since he seemed like a really great lecturer. His lectures were super engaging and interesting. When online, we did have a lot of work, but he was kind enough to let us turn in work at a pace that works for us. He provided short videos and clear grading criteria. Take him!

A caring professor who gives helpful feedbacks. Due to the transition, he gave us leeway and let us turn in our works at our own pace. He's open to suggestions and does not mind altering whatever does not work with online learning.

I took him for eng 1a and his class was honestly not as hard as others make it seems, its the usual 4 essays a semester for every class, and he gives you 1 week for a rough draft then another week for the final draft plenty of time, he gives great feedback on how to improve it and if you follow through with it then the essay will be graded right

Solid professor, however I felt as if he wasnt clear with some assignments. He also assigned homework every week and then an essay. I didnt find this class to be easy but it wasnt as bad I thought itd be (I ended up getting a better grade than what I thought Id get). He does care for your success, which is something I thought was great.

I am honestly considering taking his class during the typical semester instead of the summer intersession. His asynchronous organization is excellent. The reading material he provides is engaging, though not an easy class. If your education requires effective argumentative writing, then he proficiently provides the tools and prepares you.

Took professor Mattoon over the winter. Quizzes/hw aren't too bad. However, there is a lot of reading so be prepared. Essay every week based off reading material as well as final essay. He's also pretty lenient with late work. Overall, he's a great professor and relaxed grader, mainly cares about what you took from the reading. Highly recommend.

Course is fully online. Plenty of resources available. Prof is understanding if you need more time to finish some assignments, make sure to email him and communicate though. Prof leaves feedback for the essays. Reading will be required in order to learn how the essays will be formed.

Professor Mattoon is great but just get ready to write a paper almost every week. There is a lot of work. The writing assignments are not very difficult. But there was a group project which was tough for an asynchronous class. Nevertheless, he gives really great feedback on all assignments with clear instruction and answers emails quickly.
