He just has a certain way of getting the point to you that I have not had with any other math teacher.

If you fear or hate math take Mr. Mavis. He is an excellent teacher and made statistics easy for me. Show up to every class and do the homework and youll pass with a good grade.

I took Mavis for Finite AND Statistics - I hated math (or so I thought) before I took him, but he actually MADE IT FUN! I tell everyone I know that he's the best math teacher I've ever had. I took a summer class that met like 3 or 4 hours a day, and it never felt longer than the standard 50 minute lecture. He makes math easy.

I took his intermediate algebra, overall he very knowledgeable in his areas of educations. I have to say that it very fun and never boring in his math class that I haven taken. But something he used words to make me feel bad and also loss self esteem....

I walked into Marks class hating Math. After three semesters with him, I ended up with an A in statistics, and an A in my Algebra classes. An A!!! It's a miracle. If you show up to class ahead of time, or go to his office, he will give you all the help you need. But you do need to do your homework, and come to class cause he won't baby you!!

Mark is a great teacher. He teaches the material in a clear, concise manner. I have major math anxiety and Mark helped me to feel very comfortable with math. I have never in my life gotten an A in math up until I took this class. I was not interested in math at all until I took this class, but now I feel like I can do it!

Words can't describe how wonderful Mavis is! He taught at my High Sch., when I found out he was going to teach at Butte I enrolled in 2 of his classes. This was 3yrs ago! He wrote me an excellent let. of rec. for a scholarship. He teaches math with wisdom and skill. I have transfered and still go back to visit him, he is truly a great professor!

Mavis is an excellent teacher- I had no trouble with this class. Just do the homework and pay attn in class and you will do well. He explains difficult concepts and makes them clear and easily understandable. Take his class!

Very helpful. Gives you examples of how to work a certain equation. Gives his class some humor to forget the stress when thinking too hard.

This teacher makes this class easy for all his students. However, he gives homework almost everyday and you cannot use a calculator until he allows you. So if you want to pass this class you need to study really hard because the test are worth most of your grade for this class.

Thank you Mark. You knew from 108 how hard this was for me, and in this class you made it easy for me to learn what doesn't come easy. You always leave the problem example on the board long enough for me to copy in my notes...it makes the difference in doing the homework! Don't change your methodology!

Marc Mavis is by far one of the best that Butte College has to offer. If you ever have the chance to take one of his classes, you would be foolish not to. His class has truly shaped my experience as a Butte College student. I've got the highest respect for this guy.

Very good instructor. Only thing that peeved me is the exams after every 3 chapters with no tests in between. This caused a few people, including myself, to struggle in the class but I'd take him again. He is helpful and is willing to help you succeed. Just study hard and you'll pass.

Wonderful teacher (really funny in a OCD way), always explains everything in detail, but not so easy he gives you the answers to the homework. Attendance is mandatory or you fall behind, and exams make up most of your grade. Go to class, study hard and everything will be okay. (But that is advice for any college class.)

Hard class, and in order to pass, attendance is mandatory. Mavis is a good teacher, although his tests can be hard and he doesn't seem to give students any opportunity for extra credit. I got a C in this class but was so close to getting a B. If I had scored 1% more on the final, I would have gotten a B, and I did attend quite regularly.

Mavis is a good teacher, he really enjoys what he does which makes it better. The only negative thing is that he can be a bit condescending. The hw is all online and you don't need the book. Overall I'd say he's good & keeps it interesting.

Mark is a great teacher. If you struggle in Math or if you are insanely curiouse and ask a ton of questions he always has time to help. The only way you fail this class is if you don't show up, don't do the homework.

Mark is very helpful when it comes to the online homework. He will email you back as soon as he can, and the emails are very clear as to how to solve the problems. He is very clear in class! And he will not move on to the next the next subject until the whole class understands.

He was awesome very funny, and if you needed help with anything he was always thereto out. If you had troubles he will come to you and see what you need help with! Take his class for sure!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a bonehead in math so I was dreading taking Business Stats, but Mavis simplified the material and taught it extremely well. Good math teachers are extremely rare for me but Mavis was amazing, especially in such a tough class.

Great teacher! I attempted taking stats with another teacher in a previous semester and had a hard time. Mark's approach is completely different than what I experienced with the other teacher. It is heavily calculator based, must have a TI 83 or higher, may rent one for the semester from math dept. but do so quick b/c they go fast! Take him! :)

Best prof I've ever had. I usually hate math, but he made it so much easier for me, and was always there to help when I needed it. I would recommend him to anyone. Very good at explaining things and work load is the perfect amount. I had him for two different semesters and did very well. He's also hilarious, and really loves teaching. Best around.

Loved him! He's a great teacher, great explainer, and a nice guy. Online homework and quizzes are great, because he gives you unlimited attempts. He grades hard on tests though. Even if you ace the online stuff, but bomb the tests and quizzes, you will not pass. If you're not a great test taker, I suggest Sanjay Dev for this class instead.

Mark is an awesome instructor, no mater whenwhat we ask him he would always answer.

You had to attend lecture to understand what was going on in class and for homework. The test are not super easy but if you are understanding the material you should be fine. The final exam was what killed my grade.

Quality class. Mark is very smart, and able to deliver the material in an easy to follow manner. Finite math can be confusing, so missing class is not recommended. He grades VERY clearly, and gives progress grades after each test. Always willing to answer questions, even if it's from the people who didn't show for the lecture.

Every once in a while there is an instructor that is intelligent, engaging, and genuinely enjoys what they do. He is one of those. He is a credit to his profession and educators can learn a lot from him. I took his class over the summer and I honestly thought it would be the type of class where it was just straight lectures followed by quizzes/tests. But no, he is a really down to earth guy. He finds a way to incorporate eye-opening analogies and metaphors to his lectures that sometimes still maintain humor. He always talks about bar bets. Fun Guy!

Dr. Mavis is an amazing math teacher there are very few math teachers that make math enjoyable. He expects your best but not perfection and is all about helping students learn instead of deadlines and grades. If you pay attention and ask for help when needed you will do just fine in his class.

Math does not come easy to me and Mark made it easy. It breaks concepts down so that you get each step. He is more than willing to help you figure out where you went wrong in a problem. Very straight forward. Go to class, take notes, study and you're golden! I wish I could have him for all the next math classes I need!

Mr. Mavis was a great professor that I would absolutely take a class with again. I did Math 26 (College Algebra), and he explained the concepts clearly. He posted the Zoom meetings on Canvas so that students could review them later, and he gave us practice problems that were very similar to the problems he used on the test. Two thumbs up from me!

Best Math Teacher in Chico. Best College teacher I had period. There was a lot of material to learn but he goes over it one class at a time so everything sticks. He puts quizzes online to keep everything you learned fresh in your mind. He had four tests there are not easy but you will be ready for them. Had an tutor you could see after class.

Mavis was a decent professor. Since this class was all online it was really up to the student to watch his hour long lectures or do their hours worth of homework. It is easy to fall behind in this class although he is very clear in his lectures about the tests and homework. Great class!

Made the subject of statistics very engaging and interesting. He used a lot of very relatable examples, and even used sample data he collected from us as a class to show different aspects of statistics. The things I learned will apply in all disciplinary fields, and the classroom environment he cultivates is very welcoming and casual. 10/10

If you need to take Stats, I can't recommend Mark enough! He's an amazing instructor and makes the class extremely easy. He knows that you won't really need to know formulas so he doesn't really teach them, instead he just shows you how to input them in the calculator. If you can remember the calculator controls, you shouldn't have a problem.

He ensures that the students understands the process of getting from Point A to Point B. He always walked in with energy and a smile before teaching the class. When a question was asked, he made sure we understood all the way through and didn't make us feel embarrass for being confused. Made class super comfortable and welcoming. 100% recommend.

This is entirely a lecture-based class, no group work, but he still manages to create a comfortable fun environment. He goes into depth about every topic & makes sure everyone is thoroughly prepped for exams, there are never any surprises. He's very funny and tries to get to know every student, his classroom is a welcoming environment for everyone.

Had him for LA in my last semester, and he is very passionate about teaching and mathematics. LA is a very different math class so be prepared to understand concepts and use them in depth. The only downside was that the course was hybrid. Although I got a B in the class because I flunked the final, his class inspired my interest in Linear Algebra!

God there's not enough positive things I can say about Mavis. This guy absolutely ignited my love for math, he is witty, funny and lighthearted. He makes sure that you understand the materials, and gives good tips and tricks for doing common mathematics procedures. He is not the kind to dwell on vocabulary of math, he just says things simply.

30 years + in teaching,Mavis is a stats specialist using the TI-84 method,test heavy course. 15 percent for homework mystatslab, + 4 tests each worth 20 percent, w/ a final to replace ur lowest test grade,+ 5 percent for participation in class. He worked with my issues outside of the class also & was very kind and entertaining. Try not to be late.

Great prof, he explains the "why" behind the concepts & is super accessible for questions outside of class. He teaches things with the calculator and doesn't bog down the class with extra equations and random work. You can get full points on every homework assignment, & the exams have a take-home & online component. Highly recommend him.

I just took Linear final exam today. He is a great teacher. His tests are hard because you conceptually need to understand the material so just redoing problems like a parrot won't work. He has a unique way of teaching. Easy to talk to if you have questions and very helpful

Mr. Mavis made statistics simple and understandable. As long as you watch all his lecture videos you can easily earn an A.
