He was a very good teacher,not boring at all . he knows his stuff, work was not hard, just study the material there is alout to remember.

He is a good teacher, the class is not a easy pass through. But if you want to learn astronomy from an excellent professor here he is!

He's a really nice guy, new to teaching, so he's still learning, but it's ok. I found the class really interesting, and wished that there was another astronomy class. It's better if you take it with the Lab though.

He is great! I only took him for the lab... but it was all very very easy.. And while he just kinda gave you the assignment and left you to your work.. he was very approachable if you had any questions and he answered them thoroughly and well. I'm definetly taking him for math next semester.

Had Dr. McGovern for Astronomy 101 lab. Great teacher - explains material well and is easy to talk to if you need help. He also lets you work in teams - you get done a LOT faster that way. Keeps things light hearted in the lab - makes it easy to come into class. Overall I highly recommend taking Astronomy lab with him. You'll learn a lot.

This class was great! McGovern is very informative, the class structure is highly organized, there are four tests total, the final is cumulative by 85% of the questions are exactly the same from the other three tests He provides study guides, and best of all he renormalizes the class,Take Dr. McGovern!!!!

Great teacher, responds well to the pace/vibe of the classroom. He teaches clearly and also strives to explain topics many different ways when he recieves quizzical looks from the class.

He's great. I wasn't completely interested but he deffinitaly opened my mind. The tests are difficult but if you do the homework its not bad. Ive always hated science and math but even though this class was a mix, I thought it was great. Do the homework and youre fine.

easy class if you read the chapter before class. paper was easy and the tests are easy if you pay attention in class and review the study guides you can print out. thought i would have failed the final but only missed 5 out of 100. he is a good teacher tho and i would def take his class again.

Dr. McGovern is extremely knowledgeable. His technique of teaching is very casual but immensely informative. His intellect is evident and he has an incredible desire to help students understand astronomy and its concepts. He is quite funny and shows a humane, comfortable side. You do need to apply yourself in his class, but all students should.

The class was simple yet challenging. overall was a decent class if you do the homework show up and take the tests you will be fine. for military members he seems to be ok with working with deployments.

Do every homework assignment, keep up with the reading (if you can't and for time sake's read the summaries at the end of the chapter to get decent grades on the quizzes), complete the two projects by the last class of the semester (one poster/video and one 3-page essay) Powerpoint lectures available online. He's nerdy and I love the way he dresses

Yes there is reading assignments to keep up with and yes there are quizzes but its a breeze if you just pay attention! He gives you every powerpoint, he tests directly off what he has taught, and his knowledge is fascinating! Absolutely loved his class! TAKE!!

I took him for the class and lb, got an A in both, you must show up to the lab because there are only weekly activities and only one make up lab, they are easy.In lecture just show up and read the book, the class is interesting and boring at parts but he does his best to make it tolerable.

Dr. McGovern is a wonderful professor. He keeps the class awake and entertained, and is pretty good at explaining material in laymen terms. He values teaching concepts rather than just drilling definitions into your head. Definitely one of the best professors I've had at AVC. And the chili-pepper is because he is quite attractive.

McGovern is far and away one of the best teachers at AVC, which sadly isn't saying much. But, if I could I would take his class again. He actually cares if you understand or do well and knows what he is talking about and can bring it down from PHD to community college level.

McGovern uses powerpoint slides to teach, and he does a good job, doesnt just read them like other professor's do. His sense of humour keeps you interested in the lecture. His exams are pretty much straighforward. Read, attend lecture, and you'll do well in his class. theres hw and quizzes which help you loads to see how well you get the material

Theres never a dull moment in his class..his lecture slide are really helpful and he usually posts them online attend class and pay attention and you have an easy A..although he likes to make you think hes hard (hes really not) and it doesnt hurt that hes reeeeaaally good looking :)

By far one if the best teachers that I've has in my 2 and 1/2 years here. He is super passionate about teaching and he wants to help. I got a low c in his class but I would still take more classes from him. He says there is no curve and that's true cuz he creates his own curve that is different from the normal one.

Great teacher, we had homework everyday but it wasn't very hard. The first test was a bit hard, but for the other two and the final he provided more than enough material to get an easy A. Quizzes each day, which are super easy if you do the reading, and even if you don't you usually end up with a B on the quiz. Funny dedicated teacher, def take.

Lots of homework, he's slow about grading and returning. Highly! recommend use of solutions manual. I found the class difficult. Test were some multi choice, but mainly few heavy wieghted long answer Q's which were medium to hard (not easy) difficultly rating according to the PYS book. Homework is a large % of Fin grade than test.

Best Physics professor at the college. This is my 3rd class with him (2nd physics class) and I can tell all of you with certainty that this is your best option for Physics. Get priority registration or talk to him a semester in advance, because getting in is not going to be easy.

I had McGovern for Astronomy 101, Physics 110 and Physics 120. He is a great teacher with a great sense of humor. Wish he would teach the 3rd installment of Phyics.

Really cool teacher. Very lenient on grading and very humorous. I highly suggest taking his class. Only thing is you WILL have to read and you should be prepared for his tests. He also likes to help students having a hard time in his class and offers extra credit!

Grading was extremely lenient, very easygoing atmosphere and related the material as simplified as possible while still going over required crutial concepts.

McGovern came in to replace our regular teacher, who couldn't return. He was a very laid back lab teacher. No quizzes/tests. Easy A. Very nice. The only thing I would say bad is that he tends to dumb things down TOO much.... so that it becomes difficult to understand WHY, whereas if it weren't dumbed down so much we'd recognize familiar concepts.

A hilarious teacher who understands how lazy students can be because he's the same way. He's still incredibly informative, able to break down such a complex subject until you understand it's just the movement of particles on various scales. I had family issues this semester, but he was very understanding and helped me keep on keepin' on with school

Exams were pretty easy for me but I studied a lot. Loved the class and the content. I'm definitely taking him for lab and Physics.

Definitely in my top three favorite professors at AVC. He's funny, passionate, and the class is an easy A if you pay attention and do the work. There is a lot of work each week so be prepared for that. He's also super hot, especially once he grew out the beard. Looking forward to taking his lab class next semester.

Knows his stuff but can be kind of an arrogant guy. Teaching wise though he teaches the subject well, and will help if needed. Liked the class but he tried to make people think having Christian faith is stupid and science can answer all. Cool subject, cool class, take if needed.

He is an amazing Professor I had him for honors option and he really good in wanted to help his students out with anything they need. His lectures are not boring or too long. Gives extra credit the hw is a amount is good I would recommend taking him if you need to pass a science class learned a lot from it. Use the book a lot will come in handy.

Mcgovern is a great teacher, he makes things easy to understand. The lectures are really interesting, and he changes the pace by showing videos on youtube. The homework is online so there's a schedule to stick to, but it's basically straight out of the book. Tests are easy. It's a plus that he's hot. The whole sarcastic nerd thing works for him.

He is a great professor. Really funny and blunt. His tests are based on the study guide questions so as long as you look at that you'll pass. Took the course over the summer along with the lab. Great experience.

Dr. McGovern is a good teacher. Gives a lot of homework but he gives out the assignment plenty of time before it's due. Quizzes were easy they were based on his lectures and study the reviews he hands out and the quizzes to pass the exams

Dr. McGovern is an amazing trigonometry teacher. I took his class during intersession and passed with an A, after I had previously taken the same course during fall with a very bad professor and failed. He is always available if you have any questions and his lectures are never boring.

Great Professor. Clear and concise. Took his Plane Trigonometry class over intersession. He gives a grade for the homework but doesn't look at the answers just checks to mkae sure the work has been at least attempted. Gives a study guide for every test and goes over the test the day he hands it back. Has about a one to two day turnaround on grading

Easy A

He is a good teacher! Gives study guides before his test, which are helpful. Reading the chapters helped me a lot. If you get the subject easily his lectures will help but I preferred the reading. You don't have to work too hard but you can't easily slack off. All in all good teacher

As my first intersession class and first time taking trig with math not being my strong suit, he taught so well and I understood everything. Because of this class I now feel very confident for my future math classes and will take him again any chance I get. :)

Mr. Mcgovern was a great astronomy teacher ! Lectures can be very long and boring but the Mr. McGovern is very into his lectures which makes it bearable. Text book is free and can be downloaded online as a Pdf file and tests are fairly easy if you study his entire Study guide since he pulls out questions from it. Either than that its a good class!

BEST PROFESSOR EVER! I actually believe he cares about his students. Take him if you can. I'm not a physics or math major but he still it made it doable for me. He's the best.

Absolutely the best physics professor on campus. Take him if you want to learn. His grading criteria allows you to fail all of the tests and still get a "B" as long as you do all of the homework with an "A" average.

Of all the instructors I've taken at AVC Dr. McGovern is by far the best. He truely loves the topic and is very clear on the material. Online quizs and hw are pretty easy if you show up. Lectures are on canvas in case you miss. Gives out clear study guides for every test. Book is online and free as well.

When Dr. McGovern lectures you can tell he loves what hes doing. Great sense of humor. His class is easy just pay attention and show up. Midterm and Final are very easy as well. His lab is also easy, BUT SHOW UP it is very hard to get an A if you miss a lab assignment. Make friends with your group members right away and the assignments will be easy

I took his Hybrid class and I have to say that I was quite nervous at first in taking his class, but the class work was a piece of cake. He gives you study guides a few days/week before the exam. Overall, easy A!

Dr. McGovern is just awesome. He is extremely intelligent, his jokes are funny in a weird way and you can ask any question and he will answer it. The topics are extremely interesting if you like space and you will quickly feel tiny as soon as he starts comparing space to objects. There's 4 tests (1st one is hardest), the HW(online) is very easy.

He gives study guides that are extremely helpful and all the homework are simple, as long as you study and keep up with the homework is fairly simple. There is no extra credit so do not expect it. The book is not needed and I never even opened it, (which now reminded me that I should delete it)

In regards to teaching, he is able to present his lectures in a way that the students can understand it (especially students new to physics). He gives a significant amount of homework but helps in the long run when it comes to mastering the principles of physics. The tests are easy because they are similar to the homeworks. Doc, as I like to call him, is a great professor. He is passionate about what he teaches and answers all your questions. At first, you feel overwhelmed, but hang in there, study guides help with tests, homework is easy, and you actually walk out the semester feeling like you gained knowledge. Now, when I gaze at starry nights, I think "ASTRONOMY"!

I'd actually rather pay to have a good textbook than a free bad textbook. But you honestly don't even need it. Just go to lecture and pay attention, do your work and you're golden.

McGovern is seriously the best professor Ive had in my 2 years at avc. I was a little nervous to take this class but he made it super interesting. Good vibes, super funny, all the tests have quizlets online for them so they're easy A's. Don't procrastinate on the vocab terms, it takes longer than you'd think.

Dr. McGovern's lectures are usually very clear. His slides are detailed and so well organized that I rarely found myself needing to look at the textbook. He creates his own homework, which is very similar to the examples from class. The tests are also straightforward and are very similar to homework. He's very approachable in office hours.

Professor McGovern is an amazing professor. If you miss assignment, very understanding and will reopen. Covid was difficult to get through, even with family emergencies he still came through and showed his support; very passionate. He truly wants to see his students pass, chill professor. Best physics teacher I've had. His lectures are based on the textbook, yet he adds a great deal of external information and conveys these complex, difficult concepts in a straightforward way. I really appreciate his humor; it takes the stress off grasping topics. His tests are based on his weekly assignments, so study up! Wish I could retake him.

Professor McGovern is by far the best physics professor at this school. He is pretty laid back & an overall funny guy. Lectures are very easy to follow & makes all the calculus look really easy. He gives plenty of in class examples with worked out solutions that show each step to solving the problem. He gives you a week to do his homework as well.

This class was not what I expected. Past reviews were saying the book wasnt needed but that was false... Theres no way to answer certain hw questions without the book. Speaking of the hw, there was an overwhelming amount that was definitely not needed. The tests got harder overtime. However, I like the key terms and the Professor was cool...

All of his lectures were very interesting. As long as you pay attention to the lectures the quizzes and homework should be pretty easy. There are many assignments given in this class, but they are mostly short assignments. There are multiple key terms assignments that aren't much if you do some of them each week.

AMAZING teacher!!! He is a very simple and easy going teacher. You will for ASTR 101 after every lecture have 2 homework's and a quiz but they are simple so don't worry. Test are strait forward. Just study his study guide and you'll get an A! Overall would 1000% take again :)

This Class is a very straightforward class, the Professor is vert knowledgable and is very willing to help out his students, i had him for my Astronomy lab and Astronomy 101 and i learned so much, i really want to continue my Astronomical knowledge with this professor, I promise so long as you read and study, this class will be easy

I loved this class. I did attend all my classes so it was easy to keep up but even if you don't attend every class the lecture will be available through the canvas of the week. The only slight issue I had was my scantrons always can back with marked wrong but right answers lol. He is so fun and makes class actually enjoyable.

I took Dr. McGovern for Astr101 honors and I'm so glad I did. I think the people that say there's a lot of homework are just lazy, as you will know way in advance what is due and can plan accordingly. I promise this class is simple if you just put in a little effort. And McGovern is super sweet and approachable. You're gonna like him, I promise.

This course wasn't my absolute favorite, but I passed. All of his lectures were from his youtube videos, which was sometimes difficult, but you could always go back to take notes which was helpful. All the Exams were in person, and the study guides were almost identical to the exams (just study).

AVC is lucky to have Dr.McGovern! He gives clear instructions for the material and the study guides he gives are very helpful. The man is very wise, he teaches astronomy like teaching you how to spell your own name! Appreciated his sense of humor and his lectures, he's very nice and would definately take him again!! Great grading weights- lab and hw most of grade. He's personable and accessible, I recommend going to office hours which helps a lot. Lectures are solid and he's prepared and organized- slides available online, lectures prerecorded. 120 can be hard so you'll still have to work. One of the best professors at AVC in my opinion, highly recommend.

His lectures are interesting and easy to follow through, he is funny and sometimes cracks jokes in class, his courses are well organized and prepared. He reignited my interest in space. One of the best Professors at AVC. Made Astronomy really fun, his lectures were always interesting. The textbook was free (we used the OpenStax Astronomy 2E textbook). I dislike homework but his homework assignments were enjoyable to do. It'd definitely be awesome if he taught all science classes, he makes everything easy to understand.

Dr. Mcgovern's class is unlike no other. He is a passionate professor who not only makes physics understandable, but also fun. He is really caring towards students and his tests are amazing. His tests are actually easier than the homework. Study guides are also really helpful. He is a professor who cares a lot about the concepts in physics as well.

I've never had such an amazing teacher. Probably the best teacher I've ever had. He is so passionate about physics. His lectures are beyond amazing, I wouldn't change a thing about them. 2 homework's due per week, super easy probably 10 questions. He posts lecture slides, videos, examples, etc. Literally everything you need to succeed.

Dr. McGovern is a cool guy. Took his online lecture and in person lab class. Lab class was easy enough, show up and you'll do fine. His online course is a little more difficult if you're just looking for an easy class to meet GE requirements. He does assign quite a bit of homework every week but overall was a fun course.

Very cool guy, lectures were well organized and the homework helps you remember things. His tests are so easy if you do the study guide. He also has extra credit opportunities for astronomical events. For our semester, there was a solar eclipse, and if we attended his event we got credit. Overall very chill guy who likes weird national holidays.

Great professor. His homeworks are *a lot* harder than his exams, but that doesn't discredit the exams. He's available during office hours to help out with questions and explain further in detail of the topic, which should be taken advatage of. You can see his passion for the subject, and I'd 100% recommend him. He posts his slides w/ examples too.

Pay attention in lecture because some of the answers to homework problems come straight from his lectures Study your study guide turn in all assignments and you will be sure to pass. Only thing that makes this an honors class is the research project at the end of the semester but he helps you along the way so its pretty easy. Thanks Dr.G

Took both ASTR101 & ASTR101L during summer and I enjoyed both. It's clear that the Prof enjoys what he does. Take advantage of the office hours (especially when an exam is coming up) to ask him about anything you're stuck on. The lab is very hands on but easy overall. (Also we used online textbook) Thanks Dr.McGovern for an informational summer!

Professor McGovern makes astronomy fun and accessible. His lectures are engaging, and the homework helps reinforce the material. I found unstuckstudy to be a great study tool alongside the textbook. Overall, a solid class for meeting GE requirements.

I believe his exams are fair compared to the homework. Make sure to take advantage of office hours, look over homework solutions, and review lectures slides!

I wish I could write a whole essay and post on here about how legendary professor McGovern is. You can feel the lectures and you can also feel the care he has for his courses. He explains concepts and topics to a point where you can visualize it in your head. We are lucky and fortunate to have him teach on our campus. Happy Nobel Prize Day!!!

he's really funny but uses the same jokes in all his classes so is he actually funny or he just reuses the jokes that he knows make people laugh? we'll never know buuuuut he is an amazing professor, great lectures and he has them recorded as well. good amount of homework, but they help and do relate to his tests - only good physics teacher at avc

Took Prof. McGovern in 2020 right before the pandemic. I came back to write this review because I still remember this dude. I am not a physics major (Biochem, don't hate me) but man can this guy teach. Do the homework, review the problem sets and make sure you also understand the concepts. You will get an A if you put in the work. 10/10 professor

I was scared because I have struggled to understand physics, but every time I expressed my worries he would always give stories to show that he understands and that it'll be okay. There is a textbook, but its better to study his lectures. Homework and tests reflect the lectures so as long as you go over things you'll be fine. Amazing guy 10/10.

I took McGovern's class of intro to circuits and electromagnetism during the pandemic of fall 2020, really appreciated how articulate the lectures were, these lectures formed the backbone of my academic career in physics.

Dr. McGovern is an amazing professor to take. He made me, and many others fall in love with Astronomy. Just make sure to read before class to understand the material more and to do all of the homework.

Dr. McGovern is one of the best professors at this college. If you attended all classes, (if you miss any, he has the lecture videos on you tube), complete all of the homework, and go to every lab, you will do good. Physics is hard, but it's much easier when your professor cares about your success, and Dr. McGovern has worked hard to help us.

My best and favorite professor so far, I thought this was going to be a filler class but I ended the class being very interested in astronomy and learning more. McGovern is a wonderful professor with interesting lectures and the work load is reasonable. Just a great class cannot recommend this class enough.

he uses Proctorio and really wants you to know everything and learn, his lectures are great it was a little complex for me. the last exam was almost 90 questions. And in total its 4 exams. it's definitely quite a bit of work. A lot! great professor just lots of work and he wants you to write key terms with your handwriting.
