Wonderful teacher! Knows how to explain things, and very fair testing... for an easy class, of course :)
He is a professor that actually cares about his students. He is so helpful and tries his best to help his students.
Cares about his students more than anything, he is so pretty, intelligent, very helpful for all his students, and the best chemistry professor in the world.
He is going to snap.
He is a very good professor for this course. The student has to put a lot of time in, but it is organic chemistry. If you have to take this class you cannot go wrong with him or Dr. Gregory. They even work together very well.
I think I would rate Mark as a teacher that HONESTLY wants you to learn. He feels bad when you dont understand his stuff, and works harder to get you to know his stuff. His sense of humor is great too. Thanks for the fun times Mark.
Mechelke wants desparately for his students to do well and will over-extend himself at every opportunity, making a ridiculous amount of handouts. He always has a line outside his door and will bend over backwards to please. A good prof but no backbone
By far the best professor I have ever had!
Question: Do you really NEED to take O Chem? If so, take it with Mechelke. He's a nice guy. I actually looked forward to class everyday. He likes to get to know each student personally. He does his best to convey ideas and will over-extend himself to help you understand. Good professor!!
He is the best teacher I have ever had. He cares so much about you doing well that it makes you want to do well. He makes a difficult class much easier with his help and dedication to the students.
The most caring professor I ever have! Always want each student really learns and will help them to achieve it. Class is though but this make everyone to excel.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. By FAR the BEST professor I have ever had. That point can not be stressed enough. Very friendly, very helpful, high-strung, but laid back. Works very HARD to help his students achieve.
Extremely nice guy but he didnt make me want to learn as much as Gregory did. Too many handouts so I felt like I was hand fed info instead of learning it. truly awesome guy but just not my style of teaching- I did better with Gregory and he supposed to be tougher
He is a nice guy and very willing to help his students out. I don't feel like I learned as much as I should. I didn't feel the "push" to learn the material.
He is a very very nice guy, don't get me wrong he is nice it's just the fact that his class is extremely hard. I really dislike his tests. All essays and he grades them ridiculously. He even says he makes them difficult because that is his style of teaching. you fail two tests and you pretty much fail the entire course, don't take unless u want an F
Thorough, takes time to present and go thru things. Sympathetic towards students. Will WORK with you if you go visit his office. Easy to approach. Personable. Definately my favorite professor in my 4.5 years as a college student. HIGHLY recommended!
Best professor I have ever had. Takes time to teach you in his office if you need extra help. If the class is having trouble understanding will take extra day or two to teach and help you out. He teaches a very hard subject but makes it easier to understand. I would take any class he ever taught. I loved his class even though it was very hard!!
the guy is frickin amazing. in class, he laughs and has a good time. teaching is all about having fun to him. he's fun to joke with and will help you in a way that is encouraging and not discouraging. take him, you'll love it.
He took the time to explain things, but his clarity was very low. He goes through things fast and the only people with a B or above were the ones taking the class over again! Wasn't in his office much, even during office hours. He makes jokes to cover up his screw ups. Avoid if you can!!!
Seems nice but thats just a front, he shattered my freinds dream of being a doctor. pretty much an art class
After having a different teacher for 311 I have new respect for mechelke. He makes the class fun and does so many examples. He even gives you hand-outs with extra examples. He really wants you to do well and doesn't get mad if you don't understand something. Very little homework but it's relevant when he gives it.
I have no clue what you guys are talking about. Dr. M is the BEST teacher that I have ever had. He has pushed me to the breaking point but I would take any class that he would teach. He cares about the students while other teachers only care about how many journals that can be published. This is stupid, students should come first. He is the best
Dr. M was a very good professor. The first time I took the class, I only failed because the subject is tough and I didn't really study..not his fault. I took him a second time, but this time I found that everytime I went to his office for help, he was very stressed out and at times, was very rude. Good prof, but dont expect him to stay that way.
By far th best Professor I have ever had in any department at St. Cloud State. He truly cares about his students and would do anything to help them understand the coursework and do well in his class and beyond.
MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR SO FAR AT SCSU!! His class is very very very tough but its organic chemistry...if u expect it to be easy.. ur stupid...Chemistry is just hard. I LOVE the way he explains things...very helpful and listens when u need him to...TAKE HIS CLASS
Great Professor!!! The class is hard but your not going to leave lecture with out understanding it!!! if you want an easy A take a diff. professor, but If you want to learn the material he's the professor to take!!
He is the best prof I have ever had. He cares about his students and wants them to understand the material. Ochem is a hard class, but go to his office and he will explain it throughly. He knows everyones name and stays up until 2 in the morning to correct the tests and get them back to you next day. He is a genius and his work ehthic is great.
Perfect Professor
One of the best professors I have ever taken. I heard O-chem was hard but after you take the class with Mechelke it is not that hard. He is defintely my favorite teacher at SCSU. He also likes to joke around alot. Oh and you don't have to by the book because he never uses it...if you want to do optional book problems it might help.
GREAT TEACHER!! He cares about his students and is an all around great guy. It a hard subject but all you have to do is go to his office and he will tell you how to do stuff... he wants you to do well!
Dr. Mechelke is always willing to help a student. He is a great teacher and I dont think he gets paid enough for the dedication he gives his students
mechelke is THE best professor i've had here at state! he goes out of his way to help students learn the material and has fun while he's at it. truly enjoys what he does and wants everyone to succeed. i learned so much from his class and would take another class with him if i had the option.
explains chemistry better than any other prof!
The BEST Professor EVER! Chem 310 and 311 are extremly hard! and so are the test but he teaches you so well that you will do very well on each test, and if you dont he will reteach it all again! He wants you to get an A!! Words can't describe how wonderful of a professor he is! I know this may be hard to beleive but i LOOKED forward to going to
all in all he is a helpful and nice guy. he tries too hard to make jokes and although he is helpful, if you dont get it right away it seems as if he gets frustrated and thinks you are stupid. he thinks that everyone loves chem. and wants you to fail a couple times in life in order to succeed.
Great teacher! He's a hard grader but he LOVES what he teaches, is light hearted, funny, and makes his expectations clear.
One of the very few classes that I actually looked forward to going to and HAD FUN in. He makes class fun & interesting. He will surprise you with his humor. But besides that, he genuinely WANTS his students to all get A's so he'll help you out in whatever way he possibly can. It is a hard class but it's supposed to be, as long as you do what he te
There are no words that describe this teacher He is by far THE best teacher/person in the world. He just has a way of making everything make sense. If you have the oppertunity to take his class DO IT and enjoy the time you have with such a great and intellegent teacher.Your world will fall apart in biochem next year!
He is an awesome teacher of a tough subject. He cares about the students and really wants them to understand the material. He is always available for questions and is friendly when you go to him with them.
Took a full year of o-chem with him. Best professor I have ever had. Difficult subject but what is expected of you in this class could not be clearer. He is funny, kind, and always available to help. Juggle your schedule around if you have to in order to take this class with him. You will not regret it, and will learn alot.
He is the BEst professor ever in my life! He grade up to the standard he believes we could make it as long as we are diligent, has a heart that love chemistry. You'll learn a lots from him and shall understand chemistry better which will help imply for your future career or study. He's extremely helpful, friendly and kind-hearted(so don't break it!
I took a year of O-Chem with him and he's the best professor i have ever had. I have never known any teacher that cares so much about his students like him !!! I have learned so much from him about 0-chem as well as lessons from life. Strongly recommended :)
Best prof I have ever had... Made O Chem fun while still maintaining the difficulty you would imagine for such class. A++++++ Teacher! Take him or your screwed
I cannot recomend any prof more than him. He made the subject really enjoyable. I am in my first year of a Chem PhD program and was completely prepared for my advanced ochem classes because of him whereas other people from other schools were not. He is extremely helpful and cares that you succeed. Makes Ochem understandable and relatable.
favorite teacher at scsu! he made class so interesting and was very willing to help when i had questions. very difficult class material, but if you have to take the class, take mechelke or good luck
Dr Mechelke is a wonderful professor who cares about the success of each individual student. He wants everybody to succeed and will put in the time and effort if you are willing. His class is incredibly to where you never have a question as of what to expect. He is approachable and learned all 80 students names within the first 2 days of class.
The best professor I've ever met in teaching and helping student learn o chem.
Extremely helpful and makes a very difficult subject easier to deal with
Dr. Mechelke cares so much about his students. He really wants to see EVERYONE succeed. He will stay up all night to grade an exam because he has philosophy where if we work hard to study for an exam, he will work hard to grade them and return them in less than 24 hours. This man is crazy! But you have to take o chem with him!! He is funny, too!
Very good professor. If you have organic take it with him and you won't regret it.Very dedicated to his students and makes sure that you learn the material not just memorize but actually take something away from his class.I wish he taught other chemistry classes because I would glady take it.Best professor I have ever had!
I loved him, he was BY FAR the BEST teacher I ever had, and probably will ever have. His personility is amazing and he is really an above and beyond teacher. He is so helpful & nice. He is very fair. The class does require a lot of effort and work, but he's so good you will actaully enjoy it. Some people just have an ability to teach, he is one.
Everything that could be said about this man has already been said. He is one of a kind.
Best teacher I have ever had. Super approachable personality and easy going. I would totally recommend him over Proffesor Lenay which I had for Chem 310. If you can take him do it, you wont regret it.
He is a great professor, he make s organic chemistry interesting and fairly easy to understand, if you work hard you will pass this class. However if you slack off.... good luck to ya.
Taking this difficult course with Dr Mechelke sparked my interest in organic chemistry so much that I now am in my second year of grad school studying to become a professor someday. Dr Mechelke has more passion and drive for teaching than anyone I have ever met.
I know that words aren't enough to describe my professor and mentor, but I'm writing to register my place in history by mentioning how great Dr. Mechelke is.It is wonderful to have a professor whom says we are in this together and really do it. The excellent professor makes the poor student good and the good student superior
By far the BEST professor I have had at SCSU. He wants all his students to do well. He works extremely hard to teach very difficult material in a way thats extremely easy to understand. He never puts any surprises on tests. He is clear, concise, and hardworking. Take this class with him and you won't regret it.
best teacher ive ever had in my life.. hands down. only thing i didnt like was how meeting him in his office with a group of people...
Best professor ever. Do they blue sheets and work and your grade will reflect it. Always got A's, material is very understandable and the professor is incredibly passionate and helpful. Extreme dedication hard to find, favorite professor at SCSU.
Best professor ever! If you do the work and study the class is easy to do well in! Ask him for help! He will sit down with you as long as you need! He really wants his students to do well and does a lot to make sure that happens!
Best professor ever! He cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. He is always available and willing to help his students. By far the best professor I've ever had. Its hard material but the way he teaches it makes it easier to understand.
Best professor u will ever have. puts so much work into teaching. He pulls an all nighter after an exam to get them graded for u by the next day. He takes a difficult subject, teaches it really well and gives you all the resources u could ask for to succeed. Always available for ?'s. Will give practice ?s in his office to make sure u understand.
While I may enjoy chemistry I did not enjoy organic chemistry.... UNTIL THIS CLASS!! Dr. Mechelke is a passionate prof who is completely invested in his students. If the class does poorly on a test, he is upset because he gives everyone everything that he has. He is so invested that after a test he will pull an all nighter just to get it down.
He wrote the notes that are used as a book and writes them during during class so you can follow along. He makes the class really interesting even though organic chem is a difficult class, goes beyond what textbooks will teach you and insures you know the material. Tests are given back the next class day. Would recommend taking him in any class.
He is the most amazing professor I have ever met and the volume of positive comments on here speaks of that. He is a professor that is there for you, and makes you work for your grade, but is there to help you along the way if you give your 100% effort. I'm so glad to have him to learn one of the hardest classes for a pre med student, organic chem.
Most amazing professor EVER!!!!! He is passionate about teaching. He loves his students and always is looking for ways to do better. His lectures make everything make sense. Labs are fun and relaxed because he uses them to get to know the students. Organic chemistry is not as difficult as people say it is if you take it with him! Easy A if you try.
Best class I've ever taken. His teaching style is one of a kind, and it works for most all students. Buy the binder of handouts and follow along and you'll do well. The material is challenging, so it requires a fair amount of studying and review, but it is presented in a way that isn't overwhelming. Would highly recommend!
Amazing professor and teacher. Work hard and you'll do well and things will be great. Very very helpful and makes it feel like you learning something is his number one priority (if you're trying), also provides tons of practice so studying for the exams is "easier" cause you know what to study. (take it with him!)
Dr. Mechelke is amazing! Students all love him and the ending applause for him at the last lecture tells it all - it should have been standing ovation! He is always available for students and really pours his life into them. He has really inspired me and taught me life lessons outside of chemistry that I will never forget. Can say enough about him!
One of the very best professors out there! The most caring and hardworking one that I ever met. The main difference between him and the other o chem professor is that he does essay questions. I honestly believe that's a lot more helpful to understand the concepts and doing well on the ACS exam. I learned so much more than o chem from having him.
The best professor at the school.
He's the BEST professor in this school.
Dr. Mechelke is my favorite professor! I loved the binder of notes. It made learning and organizing class material so much easier. I was nervous for this course because everyone says "organic chemistry is the hardest class!" This was not the case with Mechelke. Lectures fly by because he makes the topics interesting and he is hilarious!
I honestly wish Dr. Mechelke taught more classes than just Organic. He is the greatest instructor at this school, and will make time for every student that needs help. Organic chemistry can be a challenging subject, but if you take it Dr. Mechelke and put a little effort into it, it will be a fun class where you will actually LEARN!
He posts videos of his lectures in D2l, and attending the class lecture is also helpful, but if you ask for help he is not helpful. he is also arrogant, and make fun of some students, and talk about them on their back which is not professional.
Organic chem is not an easy subject, and he makes it even harder. His exams are hard, He is not clear with his labs, and make you feel dumb if you ask a question sometimes.
I took organic 2 with him and expected him to be helpful because of the rates I saw, but the class was not what I expected
Dr Mechelke is truly a great professor, and an even better guy. He puts everything he has into his classes and cares a lot about the students and wants them to do well. The material is not easy, but he makes it bearable with his in depth lectures and helpfulness outside of class. Those who don't do well don't put in the effort
Dr. Mechelke was the best professor I've ever had. He puts 110% into his teaching and genuinely cares about his students and their success. Very inspirational. Clearly explains concepts. He gives you all the tools you need to do well, you just need to use them. Take advantage of his office hours. . This is not an easy course- you must work hard.
Dr. Mechelke is the most inspiring professor I've had. He always works hard for his students. His work ethic inspires me to work harder. He is the nicest professor I've met. His notes make organic chemistry so much easier. I'm really going to miss his class. Take him if you want to be inspired.
This is the first class that I've actually learned with at this school. He made me actually enjoy chemistry--and that's saying a lot, as I utterly despised it before meeting him. He is my favorite professor at this school and makes me want to change my major to chemistry.
Dr. Mechelke absolutely loves what he does. He expects you to put work into the class, and in return he is more than willing to give honest feedback whenever possible. He replies to emails in a very timely manner, is not derogatory by any means, and he wants his students to succeed. He tells you what he expects, and is reasonable.
I took this class with him rather than the other professor because I checked the rating, and I'm wondering whom are the specific people that keep rating him high because this professor was totally opposite of being nice. He was arrogant and not willing to help. his lectures are helpful, but you need to work really hard.
Dr. Mechelke is by far the best professor I have had at SCSU. He is smart and patient. He is very respected by students because he is a hard-working professor. Exams are very fair; there aren't any surprises. The homework is not bad and blue pages are extremely helpful. Take him if you actually want to learn ochem, not just memorize reactions.
Dr. Mechelke is the best professor I've ever had. He cares about his students and their success immensely. I really enjoyed organic chemistry by the end of the semester, which is not something I thought I would say. He explains concepts very clearly. There wasn't a day I wished lecture would go by faster. He is very engaging and super inspirational
Dr. Mechelke is hands down the best professor Ive ever had. He cares so much about each students success. I never though I would come out of organic loving it like I did. He is respected by all of us in Chem 310. As long as you are willing to work, this class can be really fun and you learn a lot. I would recommend taking him 100%. Best class ever
He cares about each student but will not tolerate any mistakes. Great as a person and professor but did not do as well as I thought I would. It seems as if it's easy in lecture but exams and homework are tough. Need to purchase his notes for class.
Extremely helpful; he will stay 2 hours after class/lab just to help you understand the material. Tends to curve or give you credit if you show your work. Attendance is not mandatory but it actually helps.
Dr. Mechelke is perhaps the most caring professor at St. Cloud State. If you are willing to work, he will do everything he can to help you understand the material. His lectures and interactive notes are fantastic, and are only around $30-$40 rather than an expensive textbook. Cannot emphasize enough how great this class is and how much I learned.
I can't express enough just how incredible of a professor Dr. Mechelke is. He is by far the best professor I have ever had. He cares so much about his students and their success. The material is difficult, but he makes it so much easier. He gives his all to teach you to the best of his ability and you definitely should take this class with him!
Dr. Mechelke is the finest professor I've ever had at St Cloud State. He is incredibly supportive of his students and you can tell both by the way he talks to you, and the promptness in getting tests graded and back to you, that he absolutely loves his job. He goes above and beyond the standard a college professor should be, as he truly cares.
Greatest chemistry professor i have ever had. His method of teaching aims to help you understand how and why things happen instead of brutal memorization.
This guy is the best and most caring professor I know! He is so down to earth and willing to help anyone and everyone. He makes organic chem easy and he makes his own interactive notebook for students that makes studying easy. He will clearly say what to look for on exams. 4 exams and a comprehensive final. You will enjoy O Chem and that is hard.
Mechelke is probably going to be one of the best teachers you come across. He genuinely cares about how his students are doing in the class and will go out of his way to make sure you understand. He gave many helpful practice exams, worksheets etc. His course book is very easy to understand compared to commercial ones. He also has a sense of humor
You would be doing yourself a disservice by not taking Dr. Mechelke. I have never met a professor so willing to help students in my entire life! If I could take him for every chemistry class I would. He is by far my favorite professor.
The people who gave him a bad rating must really have a male figure complex because you have to be insane not to like this guy! He puts so much time and effort into his students. I've never seen a professor care so much. Very flexible and understanding. Posts all of his lectures online. Weekly quizzes in 310 but more like biweekly in 311.
Best professor I've come across over the 25+ I've had. He writes his own class notes which are excellent and explain more than the typical book. He is willing to do everything to help students and genuinely loves the subject. The material isn't easy but he prepares you well. He's also a funny guy that seems to always be in a good mood.
Dr. Mechelke is the best, most genuine, caring, helpful professor SCSU has to offer! He is very smart and passionate about what he does. He cares a lot about the success of students more than anything. Don't get me wrong, Chem 310 and 311 can be difficult if you dont practice. but if you do, you'll get a good grade. Highly RESPECTABLE Professor!
I will never regret going to SCSU because this professor is so outstanding. Truly a Gem. I say as a matter of fact that he is the best chemistry professor at SCSU and maybe even the state. He teaches so well that I never had to memorize the way I do for other classes. He carries the whole science department, such a hardworking man!
This guy cares on a personal level about what he teaches. He puts out complementary material and more to ensure that everyone gets good grades, and gets genuinely sad when we don't. He also explains the subject so well that you'll never un-understand it. Objectively the best prof in the chemistry department.
Professor Mechelke is such a truly outstanding professor. His lecture contents are incredibly useful and he's always available to help. Best professor I have ever had.
I took class with him depending on some good rates. Exams are very tough, and he is not clear with labs. He is arrogant, and mocks people, so I prefer to learn by myself to do well in class.
Provides "To Do" lists every week, and general feedback after quizzes and exams. Exams are difficult, but if you work hard, it is manageable. He is very passionate about Organic Chemistry, and even more passionate about equipping students with skills to succeed. Available for questions almost anytime, and tries to help in whatever way possible.
There is nothing bad to say about Dr. Mechelke. He has humor, he has his own interactive textbook (30ish dollars) that you fill out as you listen to lecture, and he is extremely organized and never misses a beat. Everyone knows O Chem 1 and 2 are complex courses, but I couldn't imagine taking it without Mechelke.
Dr. Mechelke is straight-up incredible. He makes the OChem non-scary and genuinely fun. Ochem is no doubt a hard subject, but Dr. Mechelke makes it so much easier. He genuinely cares about each student and wants everyone to succeed. He is extremely approachable and is always willing to work 1-on-1. He runs engaging, inspiring, and funny lectures.
Dr. Mechelke is an amazing professor who cares about all that he teaches. I don't think I would have passed organic chem with any other prof. He is great at office hours and answering questions you just have to take the time to do the work and ask. He writes his own notes/textbook in the form of a binder that is all-encompassing and well-integrated
Dr. Mechelke is the best professor I have ever had. His lectures are entertaining and informative. It is so clear how much he cares about his students. He puts up multiple reviews before exams, and he genuinely wants every student to do well. O-chem is hard but he puts in the same amount of effort as the students. He made learning o-chem fun! :)
He was a great teacher. I had a lot of questions about the material so I emailed him a lot, and he responds fairly quickly. Also, He doesn't make you feel dumb if you ask him a lot questions. He cares about you doing well, and is very approachable. He's the reason why I now love organic chemistry :).
Took him and loved him for 310, nothing has changed. Dr. Mechelke is one of a kind. This man cares more about his students and their success than any teacher I have ever had. Get to know him, he is super helpful when you are struggling, and a fun guy to be around. You will enjoy this class with Dr. Mechelke, and that is rare with organic chem.
If you want to pass ochem, take Mechelke! If you really want to learn, take Mechelke! If you want a challenge, take Mechelke! If you want the best professor in the world, take Mechelke! Did I make an account just to rate Mechelke? yes! However due be careful, as when you experience this kind of learning in class, there is no going back.
Dr. Mechleke is the best professor I have ever had and will ever have hands down. He writes all of the course content into a binder that all the students get and take notes in which is super helpful and creative. In addition, he cares about his students, makes sure everyone who wants to succeed does, and is super accessible for help all the time.
THE BEST! He clearly goes above and beyond for his students and their learning. His classes are tough, but if you put in the effort and ask for help, you will do well. I am grateful I took ochem with Dr. Mechelke. He made the "weed out pre-med course" much more enjoyable than I thought possible.
Seriously the best professor i have ever had. Goes above and beyond for everyone and you can clearly see how much he cares about his students. He is very willing to help in class and outside of class.
Mechelke is the best professor I have ever had. Hands down, no debate. He provides a binder for notes for O Chem 1 and 2, and that is an absolute lifesaver. I had no problem showing up to lectures as I found the topic approachable with the way he lectures. It's not an easy class, you will have to work. His only problem is that he's a Packers fan.
He really cares about his students and making sure they understand the material. He understands it's hard and wants people to ask questions. The interactive notes make this class so much easier. You have to go to lecture though. He puts the recordings up but you can't see his visual aids which makes a huge difference in the material.
If you liked OCHEM you should definitely take this class! Super interesting to learn about drug development and get hands-on experience. Dr. Mechelke is the best professor I have ever had and I was so excited to take another of his classes. The content is tricky but he helps you so much, and no exams!
He is an amazing professor and wants his students to do well, his exams are fair (no surprises), . There are tons of practice problems and he posts his lecture videos after class. If I were to retake this course I would go to every office hour to do practice problems with him. He will never make you feel dumb
Took Organic Chemistry (240) he had us purchase lecture notes through print+ to save us students money. The notes consisted of fill in the blank material that we would cover during lectures. Lectures are in person as well as recorded online so if you can't make it in for any reason you will still get the notes. Makes everything easy to understand.
Urgent Warning: Do Not Trust Dr. Mechelke with Your LOR Dr. Mechelke seems inspiring—he was my favorite premed professor—but his LORs are harmful to Black and Brown students. Despite scoring above the 90th percentile, many received damaging LORs leading to rejections. This is blatant racism. Be warned.
Organic chemistry would be an absolute nightmare if Dr. Mechelke wasn't teaching it. His philosophy on your success in the class is not how "smart" you are, but how hard you work at it and it shows. He genuinely cares about each and every student's understanding and wellbeing and will go out of his way to help. Very little homework, lecture heavy.
one of the best professor I've ever had, will never make you feel stupid. lectures are through guided notes and he has countless practice problems to prepare for test. you can ace the test if you do all the practice and pay ALOT of attention to detail. This class reminded me why I chose this major, made me love science all over again. 10/10
Mechelke is an exceptional professor who makes O-Chem engaging and accessible. His interactive notes, approachable teaching style, and genuine care for student success are unparalleled. unstuck AI and other study tools complement his curriculum well.
Dr. Mechelke is 10/10. He provides excellent guidance and never makes any student feel stupid. Before exams, he provides resources to allow students to excel. In addition, he makes an outstanding effort to understand and interact with every student. TAKE HIS CLASS, GUYS HES THE BEST
He wants his students to succeed. He will go out of his way to help you and explain things in a way that works for you. His “textbook” is a manual he wrote himself full of helpful hints and extra practice. He is a fair grader and makes lecture/lab something you WANT to attend. Uploads lectures so if you can go you can still watch them.
Best chem professor at SCSU easily
Best professor I've ever had. Explains difficult content extremely well, and is always available if you need extra help. He gives you all the materials needed for success. He wants you to do well. I wish I could take this class again just to have him as a professor.
I've taken CHEM310 with him twice - once before COVID, once in fall 2024. Back then, he was always a very caring and patient professor. In this semester particularly, nowadays his anxiety in the lab is contagious and makes you feel like you're not doing the procedure right. If you're not getting good grades, he talks to you differently in 1 on 1s.
I think if I took OChem with anyone other than Mechelke, I would've hated it, but he made it so interesting. My main advice would be to attend every lecture in person. And make sure to do lots of practice problems. It makes a big difference. Also, be sure to ask questions and be engaged. It makes it a lot more fun. I promise.
Organic chemistry is hard but Dr Mechelke does an amazing job teaching it, he is one of the best professors I have ever had. He created his own lecture notes to help with the class which without it would have been so hard to understand. The labs line up with lecture, exams have practice ones so you know exactly what to expect when you get there.
Dr. Mechelke was an amazing professor. He truly cares about students success and has created a “textbook” and lectures that really work. He is always willing to help and rounded some grades up at the end of the semester. He keeps lectures entertaining and the labs correlate well with the lecture.
