awesome teacher - picks his nose in class, but hey -who doesn't?
great teacher...Somewhat crazy and strange.
Tends to stray from the topic at hand.
Great teacher, different, strange, but highly recommended, if learning is your goal.
I have never met someone who is so in love with the sound of his own voice.
His teachings have helped improve many students' quality of life. The skills offered in this class are very helpful, and should be required for all degrees.
Can't keep his mind on the task at hand. Talks, Talks, Talks, and did I mention talks? Sometimes your personal problems should just stay personal!
A very passionate teacher, cares about his students learning better communication skills.
Mark has helped me to see so many areas of my life that can be improved with better communication. he doesn't just read the book to us, but gives real life examples. He is not a stale teacher.
O my god never again

this instructor is confusing for people who thinnk in a linear fashion. seems to go off track on topics but ideas are actually related in a complex way. wants students to think critica if people stay with it. helped me learn about communication and life.
Mark is a great teacher! He requires that you engage with the material and gives you a lot of food for thought. I can definitely recommend his classes.P.S. He looks and sounds a lot like Jeff Goldblum. :)
Although this website is totally bogus (mostly for whiners), I feel compelled to rate Mark. I loved his class. Great teacher. You won't park your brain at the door.Bring it with you if you hope to do well.
Mark knows his stuff and gives complex and nuanced responses. For people who want a quick and simple answer, these thoughtful answers may seem longwinded. I loved his teaching.
Great teacher! Entertaining and very informative! Also a very compassionate individual
Murphy was awesome. I hope to have him for another class. He is witty, though with a bite, which I love.

He was wonderful , and the class was instresting ....he made you think
wants to make clones
Do Not take this class if you only desire a degree. If, in fact, you would like to expand your mind, I refer him. Striking mind and presence...
great teacher for 100. Every interesting teacher!
Amazing professor who challenges students to think outside the box and be able to intelligently depend their positions! Very compassionate!
very light workload. reading is unnecessary gives you practical information.makes you think and defend your opinion
Interesting class for sure. But his hippy dippy attitude on things irriatated me.
There was no point to anything that he taught. I didn't really learn anything from him.
Horrible Teacher!!!

He didn't like you unless you had blonde hair and big ****!!!
He was a great teacher and a great listener. He made you feel like you could talk to him about anything. His speech class I great, he made you challenge you beliefs and thoughts. Really made you see the big picture, excellent teacher, highly recommended
If you are blonde with nice body then you belong in this class, other than that don't take his class.
Only liked you If you worshipped the ground that he walked on. If you didn't he didn't like you, horrible teacher.

great teacher, loves the subject matter and has lots of knowledge to share. likes to keep things upbeat and fun. not good for more serious people
As a male student I will say that Mark did not do any of the things stated below when I was in his class. His unique teaching style is an asset to EVCC.
MARK WAS SO AWSOME!!! I loved his unique teaching tehniques. Some of the class discussions that we've had, really amazed me and changed my perception on life. And it was very easy to learn the material because Mark made it sound so interesting. Take his class, you'll learn so much about communications, which you'll find very helpful in life.
He was always late to class. Messy, disorganized. Made me feel uncomfortable.
Bar none, The best teacher I've ever had,Mark made learning so much fun, there should be more teachers like him.
You will feel like you didn't learn anything in his class. Take notes on everything (at least for the interpersonal communication course)! His exams are more on what he tells you than on what is in the book. You can get away with not reading the book except for when you have a take home exam. He will grade the grammar in your essays.
Mark was extremely laid back which was really nice for Public Speaking because I was then not so nervous! He was very helpful and I would definitely take a class from him again! He is on time and to make us more relax the first few minutes we shoot the breeze! Really good teacher and I would recommend him for sure!
It was okay. I'm not much of a public speaker so it was hard to enjoy the class. He did make the class fun though.
I do not understand the "being blonde" comments. He was a great teacher and I'm a brunette. He takes personal interest in the well being of his students and has a kind of dorky sense of humor, but never makes you feel stupid. He is stern when he needs to be, but treats everyone with respect. I enjoyed his class.
Mark is pretty cool but he gets behind schedule a lot, and from what I've heard he gets off schedule with all his classes. the final i thought was pretty lame just because i don't feel like he ever taught us any of that stuff in class but you take it online at home so that helps i guess
He's pretty chill but that does not mean he is easy. You still have to do work. He is pretty funny and very liberal. As long as you work hard you will be fine. That only thing that goes into grade book is speeches and the final exam.
He was absent at least 7 days during the quarter. We got very behind and didn't even finish half of the material. He was not prompt with returning grades-with the exception of speeches. He was not accurate on a few people's final grades as he didn't record some grades correctly. It then took 5 weeks to submit correct grades. He was a hassle- avoid.
I have a love/hate feeling towards Mark. He did make you feel more comfortable with speeches but he missed at least 5 days of class without warning just a note on the door. And the material that was on the final was never covered in class. Also Mark often stated his opinion on things like it's a fact. Take him at your own risk.
I have never had a teacher more frustrating than Murphy. He cancelled class 5 times the morning of, without warning, just a note on the door. He used every opportunity he had to lecture on his opinion on politics/religion/ethics, not public speaking. Very unprofessional and unorganized. Didn't open our "mandatory" book once.
He is a nice person, always willing to help. He's very particular about how you give your speeches. The class isn't much work, but the 4 or 5 speeches you give can be. Overall I would recommend this class.
Mark was very unorganized with the class (some speeches delayed weeks), and will Mark down a ton of points for the stupidest reasons. This is the only class I have ever received a 0 on a paper and I am in the engineering field, almost completed with my associates degree. If you are looking for an A, DO NOT take this class.
Grades based on mood. Marks off tons of points if you don't say exactly what he is thinking at a particular point. Certainly has some childhood issues or something. Rude and snippy comments as well. Completely unrealistic expectations. Disorganized mess! Hates his job and thinks all students are idiots. Narcissistic personality disorder.
He is an amazing professor! very liberal and intellectual. I loved his class! he should give more classes, besides Public Speaking.
Hey read the good ratings. You know mark wrote them. The ones with the two bars for easiness.
Easy class until you get to the final. It's completely random and not funny (like he tried to be). Lowered my final grade. NEVER responds to emails. WOULD NEVER TAKE AGAIN
Mark has been a wonderful teacher. He is an extremely funny guy, and he cares about you and your opinions. His lectures were never boring, and class was so enjoyable to go to.
AWESOME
The best prof I've ever had. He was understanding of a tough time that I went through during finals week and he is such a pleasure to be around. I would highly recommend taking Marks Public Speaking class, no matter the major you're in. You can learn a lot about yourself and achieve so much in just learning how to give a proper speech.
He's unorganized and cancel the class a lot. He canceled the class 3 days in week 9. And he canceled the class on week 10 which was a help day for our speech. Then he said will help us through email, but didn't reply. Can't check my grade. He graded a lot of homework just before the deadline he needs to turn into the school. Never use the textbook.
Mark is nice and chill. He gives interesting lectures while teaching things you need to know. I thought public speaking was just going to be another pointless class, but it actually taught me a lot about myself and the world around me.
He's such a funny and personal teacher who really tires to relate with his students, in turn making his students feel more important, and help them learn more than just the class content.
Mark is an amazing teacher! He knows what hes talking about and teaches in the best way. He made public speaking so much fun and I would take it again if i had the chance! Make sure you're on deadlines with the speeches, that is pretty much the only thing hes adamant about.
I took Mark for public speaking and was ready to have to stand in front of the class to talk. Mark is VERY opinionated and if he doesn't agree with your opinion, you won't do well. I won't be taking a class with him again. Worst professor I've had. I would email him and message him over canvas about my grade and he would not get back to me ever.
I am currently taking this class with Mark and he is awful. He has no sympathy and is just flat out rude. He never responds to you when you email him and is very poor about inputting grades. I definitely will not be taking this class again with him.
My favorite professor I have probably ever had was Mark. His class was something to look forward to. If your not a public speaker don't worry, you can get an A. As long as you follow that rubric on the dot, and fake it till you make it. He is also a HUGE liberal though, so if you're a republican (like me) it's sometimes awkward, but I look past :).
You must come to class to pass, speeches are very particular especially on criteria. The final is very difficult and you must read all of your textbook (most of your learning)
I hated this class. Mark is a picky grader and his rubrics are hard to read so it's hard to understand what you did right/wrong. He gives only a few assignments and spaces them poorly through the quarter. It didn't feel like I learned anything. Doesn't put most grades in until the end of the quarter. VERY LIBERAL.
started off the first speech giving great pointers, and only marking you off for what seemed fair. over the quarter, he graded way harder, speeches came right after the other, barely had time to prepare. If you talked to him about your grade hed listen & say he would change it but wont actually. Graded on his mood and grades never seemed fair.
Mark is such a great teacher. He is very helpful and his lectures were always interesting. This class helped a lot with my public speaking skills! You must be willing to put in effort but if you do, you will most likely get a good grade. Grading criteria is very clear and he was very helpful if I had questions.
Mark is a character. I learned a lot in class and enjoyed it, even tho he broke his leg partially thru so it was interrupted by many cancellations for appts and surgery. This was a fun, casual class that made public speaking as fun as possible with little stress. Mark was very kind to me, and a good teacher, always encouraging me. Take his class!
Expects you to show up, be respectful to other students. Don't use your electronics, relax, humor him, show you're working hard towards class assignments and goals and you'll do fine. Show up to class on time and never interrupt another student presenting classwork. Do the readings because he WILL check with a tricky and specific oral exam.
Mark is an incredible person and Professor. He deserves a lot of recognition. :) He is incredible.
I was hesitant going into it because I'm kind of introverted, but the work you put in, really shows. I ended up loving it although it was stressful on speech days. I would recommend it, it is something you can use anywhere. (Mark is also pretty cool, so don't stress).
I loved my public speaking class with Mark. Although speaking out loud sounds scary, trust me he makes it better. He is so funny, and you learn a new interesting fact everyday.
In all my academic career, I've gotta say, there has only been one instructor who was as fun to listen to as Mark. I loved his lectures, and if he was teaching any other classes, I would take them in a heartbeat. If you pay attention in class, put effort into your speech, and practice before your speech day, you'll do great.
Loved having mark as a public speaking teacher, however, you really have to put in the work to get a good grade. Lots of people in my class ended up dropping out because they couldnt meet Marks high speech standards. If you pay attention and take direction, youll be just fine.
Marks class was somewhat fun towards the beginning. Hes not a horrible teacher but I wouldnt recommend him. He becomes an unfair and tough grader throughout the quarter. If you can find someone else to teach the class dont hesisitate on choosing another professor.
Very rude and is not clear about his inteuctions when it comes down to speeches.
Not clear on instructions whatsoever and gets an attitude when you dont read his mind for conditions he has that arent on speech guidelines. Super passive aggressive. INSANE about door closing quietly if youre ever late even a little. The way he acts if you even glance at your phone reminds me of middle school. Singled out students in class.
An amazing human and even better professor. Take this class even if you're terrified of public speaking. He makes you feel comfortable about speeches and teaches you how to overcome nerves. Explains what he expects but it's up to you to remember to actually apply it in a speech. I had so much fun and wish I could take the class every quarter.
He literally hung up on a Zoom call 14 minutes in b/c the class didn't understand what he was asking. He tells people they are not trying when he is not even explaining what he wants the class to do. He gives outlines/comments back less than 24 hours before you present. Barely explains how to give a good speech but expects perfection.
Literally the worst teacher Ive ever had... i want to talk to the dean of the school about how horrible of a job this guy did i will never take a class from him again and i will warn everyone to never take his course ever again
Very nice professor but a hard grader. Model after example work!
Right off the bat we had an speech to write about another person in class. We have to read a certain amount of chapters by a certain date, we have 5 speeches throughout the quarter which isn't too bad and we had a fair amount of time to finish them. He's a nice guy but he's a harsh grader, everything pertaining to the speech was critiqued.
Mark is a good guy, but his lectures are riddled with politics. He is very left-wing, so if you aren't in the 'bash Trump club' it can be pretty annoying. Other than that, he doesn't give any extra credit, so make due with the assignments you are given because they are your only chances to get a good grade.
All lectures he does are just bashing trump supporters so if you want a professor that respects your opinion, avoid this one. Expects perfection out of all speeches and yet gives unclear instructions. Good class so long as you have the same beliefs as him.
I was apart of Marks first ever completely online class. He got thrown into it last minute, so overall with this being new for him and not prepared at all I thought he did good and took it easy on us. I think Mark is a really nice person and pretty easy grader. Spend time and act like you care on your speeches and you will get a good grade
I enjoyed Prof Murphys speech class. He's not without his faults, though. I am conservative and Prof Murphy is very much not so. Be aware going in that there will be a lot of politics involved in his lecture. I did fine by being neutral, but keep it in mind. Hw load wasn't awful, there were 5 speeches and a exam at the end.
Mark Murphy by far is the worst professor ever ever , he barely explains how to do proper speeches, he excepts us to be professional public speakers. He grades heavily on speeches with the rubric, one mess up, and you're getting a D or C for your speech grade.
Mark is a funny guy with interesting lectures. He has high expectations for his students and there are very few assignments throughout the quarter. But if you put time and effort into the assignments, practice your speeches, and act like you care, you can earn a good grade.
Okay if you have anxiety - do not take this class with Murphy. He is the least understanding person ever when it comes to social anxiety. I got marked Cs and B-(s) on my speeches for stuttering, acting nervous and moving too much. You will only get good grades if you are outgoing. This class hurt my GPA the most! Beware
Class was a breeze! Not at all time-consuming since he barely gave out any homework + no quizzes. He was super funny and chill. There are 3 major and 1 minor speech, but just follow the rubric/guidelines to succeed. My biggest tip for anybody who struggles with speeches, dedicate one whole day (per speech) for practicing and you'll be fine!
Prof. Murphy keeps things entertaining, but political leanings can be distracting. Focus on speeches, use unstuck AI for prep, and you'll do well despite high expectations.
Professor Murphy was the best professor that I have had! Mr. Murphy's class was an online zoom that was about two hours long two times a week. Professor Murphy is a very good public speaker and has helped me learn a lot more about public speaking. He is very hilarious and amazing. Out of all the classes I had, Id want to take Marks class in person.
Professor Murphy's class was a mixed bag. While his lectures could be engaging, the heavy political bias and high speech expectations made it challenging. However, utilizing study aids like unstuckstudy helped me stay on top of the workload and deliver solid speeches.
Mark is a very engaging and super kind professor. He wants you to succeed and gives you resources to do so, very accessible outside class too. Memorize your speeches, use note cards, and PRACTICE a LOT! I personally hate hate hate public speaking, but Mark made it fun -- he is one of my fav professors ever, and I never say that lightly!
Absolutely horrible. Does so much "shooting the breeze" (talking about himself and how unfortunate he is) that we have only two weeks to do three of the four speeches required for the quarter. Worst of all, lets his politics influence every lecture, using his "power" as a teacher to bash anything conservative or Christian. What a joke.
He's alright. Put things off until the end of the quarter so we're forced to cram speeches, and has a very clear political bias. I'm an independent (leaning liberal), and he will bash conservatives when it's not the time or place to. Super harsh grading and expects perfection while refusing to grade on a curve.
Sucks at punctuality himself but expects students to attend every class and be on time. Will have planned my day around his class only to have him cancel, brutal when trying to prepare for speeches and having your speech date pushed out constantly. Heavy left wing political bias too, be prepared for that. Do not recommend.
I learned some from this class and appreciated the feedback he gave on my speeches. There was a lot of cancelations of class. Every online Zoom except 3 were delayed or cancelled. Speeches were delayed a lot. In pretty much every class he unnecessarily mentioned something political or against Christians. So be prepared- he is very liberal!
mark is a real good professor/ instructor. he makes sure to grade pretty fairly, as long as you try your absolute best to do what is asked on the speech, you should have no trouble getting an A- at least in his class. also, if you use his office hours, you can easily get an A. i'll miss having mark as my professor.
