His exams are IMPOSSIBLE! You almost need physiology BEFORE you take his class because his exams are so tough. He knows his stuff, and he is very clear, but you can not get behind. Count on spending a minimum of 15 hours a week, HUGE TIME COMMITMENT
great teacher. knows his stuff
Great teacher
Mark is a great professor;one of my favorites. His lectures are set up to follow the lecture notes and he explains everything so it makes sense. It is a tough class for being a 2000 level (it should be a 4000 level) but it is doable if you keep up on your studying. Do not wait to study the night before, or even a week before, or you WILL fail.
tough exams. if he forgets to lecture on a topic you don't have a book to refer to and it doesn't mean it won't be on the exam. nice teacher but too tough for 2000 class, but do-able.
the best teacher at the university of utah!
Awesome class, i loved it, mark is very clear about everything he is teaching and the textbook helps too. plus he is always super willing to answer questions you might have. but don't get behind or you're screwed.

Well I had Mark 12 years ago and yet when I found this site his was one of the first names that I looked for. Over the years Mark has added so much not only to the classroom but to the love of Anatomy. His class is tough; if you put the work in you will remember your anatomy for a long time. Mark will always be one of my favorite prof.
The best class at the Uni. of Utah, but also the most difficult class I have ever taken. You'll need to keep up with the course and if you think you can cram everything in at the last minute you'll totally be screwed when it comes to test time. The labs are also great. Be sure to use the lab manual to prepare for each week.
Mark is a great teacher who makes the very difficult process of learning all there is to know about anatomy easier. This is by no means an easy class but not because Mark is a bad teacher, but because of the content. There is just soooo much information. He writes his book and lab material and it is very helpful. His teaching style is very close to perfection and tells you exactly how to pass the class with a good grade.
Seriously, who doesn't like Mark? He is an awesome teacher with a great passion for anatomy. His tests are very hard - you need to pay attention to every microscopic detail, and you should NEVER miss a lecture. But still, by far the best class I've had at the U.
Needs to have a textbook! His "own" textbook, you fill in during lecture. If you're confused, you're on your own to find another source of info. Would be nice to have some backup reading assignments to reinforce lecture. Plus, the lab TA's act like a fraternity house -- jokes about the cadavers' private parts are inappropriate!
incredible professor
Best professor on campus
Mark is a great Professor that wants to make sure his students know the stuff. The best was to succeed in his class is to go to class and Friday reviews. It's a difficult class, but it is worth it.
Probably the best Anatomy Class ever taught, but I could have learned loads and still failed this class. It demands your constant upkeep. End your relationship and quit your job, or be prepared to use your free time studying if you plan on getting an A. Mark is a brilliant professor and teacher--a must for anyone going into the medical field.
Extraordinary professor. Easily the best professor on campus. Loved the class but be prepared to study daily.
Mark teaches a great class. I took his anatomy class, as well as the advanced course. It really prepared me for medical school where I got the high grade for my class in anatomy and neuroanatomy. This class is a must, keep up on the material, and enjoy it. This is one of the few undergrad courses with human cadavers, take advantage of it.
He really is one of the best professors I've ever had. As long as you study as his lecture and go to lab, the class will be easy. It is easy to fall behind in the class from not studying all the time but it is easy to catch up on.
Human Anatomy with Mark is the best. If you commit some time and effort you will do great. I am now a TA for Mark and all I did was start studying at least a week before exams, never miss a lecture, and as for labs always look at the disc. You can only miss 50 points to get an A in his class. Keep track of them every week
Mark is the Greatest teacher, and most respected at the U. The class is great, and very interesting. It has helped me understand all of my other classes and even helped me figure out exactly what was going on in my body. Dont be afraid to go talk to Mark and ask him questions. He is your friend, and always wants his students to succeed. I still tal
18 years after graduation, Mark Nielsen still stands out as one of my most influential professors at the U. His class was TOUGH, but he gave students EVERY tool for success. His instructions were clear, tests fair, assistants top notch. Not sure I've ever had a more energetic, student-centered instructor - ever!
His class was very hard and you have to study your butt off to do well. Lecture manual and interactive atlas are a must! Great professor with great TA's
Mark is an incredible professor. Probably one of the greatest classes I've ever taken. You have to make sure you don't fall behind on material and always work hard. Mark sets you up for success though. If put the effort in, you will succeed in the class.
awesome experience
Mark is incredible. He is by far my favorite teacher at the U. His class is tough, but it's very doable. He sets you up for success and does all he can to help you succeed. It's definitely not easy, and you can't fall behind on the material, but if you put effort into it you can get an A in the class. And the labs are awesome.
great professor, very concerned with every student's success in the class. Always makes himself available outside of class for questions
good teacher, hard class
Great teacher
great teacher, format for grading is unfair at times
great teacher. anatomy is not an easy class but mark does a great job of making sure what he's teaching is clear. if you put in the work, you'll get a good grade.
Mark is a great teacher, this subject is very hard. He is very helpful and genuinely wants everyone in his class to succeed. He does a lot to ensure that happens and if you put in the work, you'll get the grade. Sometimes the test questions are tricky, you have to think through them backwards in and out to get it.
Hard class. Top notch professor! Get there early or you will most likely have to sit on the floor. There are over 400 students in this class. You must study every day and go to every class or you will get too far behind. Very intense course, but best anatomy course in the country!
Mark is a great teacher! It's definitely not a class you can just "get by" in though. He thoroughly explains as much as he can. Study and listen closely in lab!
Mark is a good teacher but he's not Jesus reincarnated. It doesn't take a genius to tell me the names of random blood vessels or muscles. I don't like that I had to spend $80 to buy the textbook he wrote just to do the extra credit. Class is a lot of work, but material is super simple, just lots of it.
I'm usually an "A" student but this class was a struggle for me. Mark is very through and expects you to be on his tests as well. Cramming for this class is not an option!
Awesome Professor. Keep up on your homework though.
This kind of teacher helps you to not only learn Anatomy, but to develop life-time learning skills and attributes. He made this rigorous Anatomy course very captivating and enjoyable. Mark is able to break down, simplify and convey the overwhelming material in such a way that it make sense, and builds the foundation for your future profession.
Mark was a fabulous teacher. He really made taking anatomy fun and I enjoyed him as a professor. He makes funny jokes all during class and makes class enjoyable. His course really teaches you the information in a way you can not forget it. Although I hated lab, because of the smell of dead bodies, it was really beneficial.
Amazing teacher! He really likes what he does and you can tell. He has amazing methods for teaching and is always willing to help. However, that does not mean this class is easy. There is a lot to learn. But he provides a lot of resources to help you do so. While getting an A will take work, it is by all means possible
He is the best professor I have yet had. He teaches and provides his own personal time for every individual student.
Very cool professor. He knows his stuff. Not an easy A though. You have to attend all lectures, keep up with the class, and do the workbook. But Mark is willing to help any way he can. He teaches you tricks that will not only help you understand your anatomy, but help you understand other things in your classes. By far my favorite professor.
Mark is an amazing prof. who has fined tuned his teaching method through 27 years of experience. Through him, anatomy just makes sense! He tells a story around the material and incorporates real life diseases and or conditions that happen in a clinical setting. My advice is to study for at least 2 hours per day and to KEEP UP on the extra credit.
Mark is such an amazing professor, as everyone has previously stated. He simplifies anatomy in a way that anyone can understand. Don't listen to kids who say the class is hard. Honestly, if you study around 1.5 hours a day, you'll get an A! Don't fall behind and do the workbook. That is your recipe for success. Come to class ready to be fascinated.
Mark is an amazing professor. He's very clear and straightforward and he is always willing to help. The class itself is not an easy subject, but his tests are not made to trick you and there are multiple help opportunities.
HARD Class. Now that I got that out of the way. GREAT TEACHER. There is so much to learn in the class. Definitely keep up with the handbook and go to every lecture.
This is a class that you will become obsessed with! Mark is an amazing professor and truly cares about the success of each one of his students. He is always there to help, and for a good reason. This class is very time consuming but also extremely interesting. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is willing to work :)
Excellent Teacher, Difficult class but Learned the most I've ever learned in a single class.
Never around, Mark would always state how much he wanted to help his students, but was never actually there for anything. He even seemed bothered by students asking questions.
This course is difficult in that you must dedicate many countless hours towards retaining the material, but Mark does an excellent job of lecturing with anecdotes and mnemonics to help. He truly cares about student success and always provides feedback to students after exams. My negative comment is that I do not find his prelab quizzes helpful.
I would highly recommend taking any class taught by him. There are no other classes that have taught me so much. He is not a hard teacher, he just throws a lot of things to learn at you and I couldn't ask for anything better. Esspecially because we pay so much for our education.
Mark is the BEST teacher I've ever had. The class is hard, but amazing, and going to class is the only reliable way of getting notes. DO NOT SKIP CLASS! I learned so much! HE is the only teacher I would take anatomy classes from! You have to buy his book which is annoying, but he's been doing it for so long it's worth it and extremely helpful.
Absolutely LOVED this class. Mark is an amazing lecturer and makes the class very possible. He also was helpful after class in answering questions and really worked with me when I needed to take the test at a different time. His lecture manual helped the most and going to class is really necessary to do well on his tests. AMAZING CLASS!
Mark is a wonderful professor that truly wants his students to succeed. He takes time to meet with students one on one and he wants to know people by name in a huge auditorium of students. He is excited about what he teaches and he loves what he does. He is the best professor that I have had at the U of U and I am currently a senior.
He's an amazing professor and shows that he is passionate about the subject. He gives students so many resources in order to succeed in that class such as TA office hours every day, his own office hours, online anatomy software, anatomy DVD, a work book, a lecture manual, and a text book. So yes, the class has a lot of material but not too hard.
He is a great teacher, office hours are a must!
Mark is an excellent teacher! He truly wants his students to succeed. He provides his students with every imaginable resource to learn the material and the use of those is critical. You have to stay on top of things though! It's a very, very difficult course and you will not do well if you cram before tests.
LOVED Mark. He's an amazing professor. This has been my hardest class yet, but I'm grateful to have learned so much. If you are a pre-health major, you will be glad to take this class. You will find new ways to study and retain information and figure out what is best. There's a lot to memorize that's thrown at you, but it's doable.
Hardest class I've ever taken. It was great. I was challenged and pushed to a level that I don't think a lot of undergraduate classes do. Don't slack in this class or you'll FAIL. Mark is always there to help and the TA's help, but they won't hold your hand like in normal anatomy. I recommend not spending too much time on problem sets & STUDY A LOT
Embryology was insanely hard. Prof. writes his own lecture manual with notes that you fill in in class, and his notes are amazing, although he regards himself as God. Tests require a solid knowledge of anatomy (not taught in class). You must be able to reproduce notes, w/drawings. Online med school lectures involved LESS detail, believe it or not.
Mark's an excellent professor and straightforward with his material - doesn't try to trick you in any way. Provides numerous resources for success and is avail, along with TA's. That said, his tests are insanely difficult and cover unnecessary detail across the spectrum. Prepare to brain-dump EVERYTHING end of semester. Brachial plexus, really???
Anatomy was one of the most difficult classes I've ever had however I learned so much. You need to be on top of everything the entire semester. If you have questions, go to talk to him; he is one of the most friendliest professors I've had and is willing to change your grade if you give him a strong enough reason.
Literally the smartest guy ever! Super helpful and wants you to succeed. It is a challenging class and you need to be at every class and keeping up on your work if you want to pass. Very rewarding if you keep up the work. I wouldn't want to take anatomy from another professor. He is super easy to approach and will answer whatever questions
Hardest class I have ever taken but Mark has an obvious abundance of knowledge on the subject and is eager to help students understand the material. I only have good things to say about him, he is understanding that it is a hard class but still expects a lot from his class.
His tests are tough and he is VERY specific on the correct answers. I didn't color one little line (but colored everything else perfectly) and got it all wrong. He is the type of teacher that is set in his ways and looks for memorization instead of learning/understanding of the subject. It's a difficult class, but doable.
His class is tough. He gives you the lecture manual and you fill it out during lectures. However, if you miss something, you can only get answers from him or the TA's, because his exams are so specific to that workbook alone. Very very nitpicky in grading. Tough class. Expect lots of studying. When he says study a little each day, he means it.
Best professor I have ever had! Honest to goodness, he REALLY wants you to do well and is always available to go through any concept with you. The TAs are incredible as well. He gives you a lecture manual to fill in as he lectures and then a workbook that you NEED to do after the lectures, or at least that week. DON'T GET BEHIND and you can do it!
One of the most enjoyable classes that I have ever taken! Mark is very passionate about the information that he's teaching and so are all the teaching assistants. With that said, you definitely need to put a lot of time and effort into this class. DO NOT MISS ANY LECTURE, and do not get behind on the work book!
Mark is a really good guy and makes an effort to get to know you personally. He does talk kind of slow and monotonic, but he truly holds you accountable for knowing a lot which I assume is good preparation for medical school. Lots of memorization, but that's kinda how this class goes. Do the workbook - questions pulled directly from it!
Mark is a really cool guy. He really wants you to pass his course, he gives you every possible resource so you can. Do the workbook because he pulls questions directly from there. Use the TA sessions and don't be afraid to talk to him cause he is really cool and will explain until you understand. Hardest class I have taken, but it is rewarding!
The studying never ends for this class. There is SO MUCH information DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE MUSCLE LECTURES. If you miss those lectures, you're risking your grade. I aced the first two exams, & fell off the path around the 3rd exam and lab exams. Disappointing because you work so hard, but the smallest mistakes will get you. It's really a 2nd job.
Learned a lot but get ready to work! Very hard class!
Mark is an amazing professor but this class is extremely difficult. Don't take it with another demanding class or you'll regret it. Clear in expectations. Get good coloring pencils. There is SO much information; you NEED to know all of it to pass an exam. STUDY STUDY STUDY everyday. Find someone to exchange notes. Don't skip lab. GOOD LUCK!!!!
One of the best classes I've ever taken. Mark teaches in a very clear, organized way that is geared towards numerous learning styles. He expects you to work hard and study a lot outside of class. If you do what he expects, you can do well, but it takes daily work.
Mark is an absolutely great professor. He is extremely knowledgable and wants his students to succeed. Prep for lab quizzes is all on your own for the most part. Tests come pretty much from the study material. Learned more from this man that any other teacher I have ever had.
Mark KNOWS anatomy! His lectures were so engaging and I actually enjoyed studying for his exams. Don't fall behind,NEVER miss a lecture and DO your workbook! Mark is always willing to help students who are putting in the time, go ask questions during office hours! The knowledge I gained was worth more to me than even the A, I received at the end!
Mark gives every student all the keys that they need to get an A out of the class. All that is needed is hard work and dedication. The class is fascinating and Mark has perfected his presentation of Anatomy over 30 years. He is incredibly knowledgable and is willing to help students improve. The TA system is incredible as well. Mark is a legend.
False Advertising: this is not a 2000 level class, It would make an excellent 4000 level class. learned a lot but for the sheer amount of information you need to be able to remember, and how he grades his tests I think the professor is forgetting it is a 2000 level class. if you have taken an anatomy class before then this might work out for you.
Mark is by far the best professor I've ever had . Over the more than 30 years he's taught at the U of U he has polished this into an absolutely wonderful class. AMAZING text and workbook. He teaches you anatomical patterns so new information makes more sense and is easily learned rather than tough to memorize. He gives you all the tools for success
Mark is a hard teacher but so worth it. Take anatomy from Mark. This is a teacher that wants you to succeed but you will have to remember so much and do so much homework. I've never had to work so hard for a class before but it's been fun and definitely would recommend Mark as a professor.
Mark is a great professor and very good at what he does, but the format of his class is very frustrating. You are expected to know the information before being able to see it (lab quizzes) and the study workbook is almost useless for the tests. If you can study for 2-3 hours a day the class is passable but it was an aggravating way to receive a C.
Mark is an amazing professor. He donates his whole life to anatomy. The class is hard but fun. It is the hardest and the most interested class I've ever taken. You do have to study a lot, but it is totally doable. English is my second language and I got an A in this class.
This class is the hardest but most rewarding thing you'll ever do. Mark has a lecture manual that you will fill out in lecture and a study guide that has all of the test questions on it. Study the study guide questions, the multiple choice homework, and the coloring pictures. Try to apply everything to your own body and you'll do fine.
This was a great course. I studied pretty much constantly but there were so many resources available that the material was really accessible. The labs were so helpful. Mark is great at teaching his students intuition when it comes to anatomy to ease the burden of so much memorization.
While Mark is highly knowledge and great at what he does, his class is designed to weed out the students that aren't academic gods. This was the hardest class that I have taken so far in my college career. It is frustrating because you feel that an A is unattainable regardless of how much study time you put into it.
This class is infuriating. Mark knows everything about anatomy and nothing about teaching. He automatically assumes anyone with a low score is just lazy and not willing to put in the work . Statements like that are enough to bring you to tears when you put in 15+ hours of studying a week. I used to love anatomy.
Definitely surprised some people felt the class was unreasonable. The exams come straight out of the workbook: if you do the homework you will find it hard not to do well in the class. Mark's organization structure for the class was awesome, very easy to follow and everything built up on previously learned concepts. Very much would recommend Mark.
Mark is a phenominal professor. He knows how to teach, not only because of his vast knowledge but he engages the whole class. He always asks everyone to answer for him, so they teach themselves. The class is very straightfoward, if you do your workbook EVERYDAY, without copying, you will ace every test. Very time consuming but worth taking.
Mark Nielsen is the best teacher ever. He is passionate about the human body and encourages all of his students to do the same. You will have to invest a lot of your time into studying but it is worth it in the end.
Mark is the man! I would recommend him to anyone. He makes you work really hard but makes it totally possible to get an A. All you have to do is fill out and study the workbook that he made.
Muzammil Faizi's favourite teacher. Definitely recommended!
Easy to think to this class will be great, as his lectures are great. His lectures are necessary to do well, but they actually don't prepare you for the test. They prepare you to do the study guide, which will give you the questions for the test, but to get the right answers, go to the TA's. This class is a trap. Avoid anatomy at the U.
Mark is a really good professor that is passionate about anatomy. I learned so much in his class. I felt at times that he could have made things a little bit more doable because you have to memorize so much. I spent countless hours studying and felt frustrated by his tests. Never miss lab, it is so helpful. The homework also saves your grade.
Mark is an amazing professor who is very passionate about what he teaches. I love that in a professor. His exams and weekly homework is straight forward. It is a hard class. I did not have enough time to study so I did not do well. You must have time to study a lot with this class. Do not work a lot or have a full course load. Overall, very good.
Mark has a passion for anatomy, and I can fault him for it. The material isn't presented in a way that really sticks. He mentions at the beginning of class that if you want an A, you need to eat, sleep, and breathe anatomy for the next few months. Tests are worth 75 points, so mistakes are costly. Final is comprehensive because "you should know it"
Mark's lectures were essentially mandatory because that was the majority of how you get the information for quizzes and tests, but he made them entertaining. The class is super hard, so don't take multiple classes that you think will be challenging. SI and TA sessions seriously saved me during exams, so use those as much as you can.
Mark is a fantastic professor and all around good guy. I really enjoyed going to class and learning from him, however, he makes material harder than it should be and it takes a while to stick, making tests (your main grade source) difficult. He says one thing about what will be on the tests but does another, so always study everything.
This class is what you make it. Mark gives you all the materials to succeed, you just need to be able to utilize them properly. Despite the fact that I'm not going to be pulling through with a stellar grade, I learned so much and I loved the class. I only recommend taking it when you have time to devote your full energy to it.
Advanced Anatomy is the hardest class Ive ever taken, the worst grade on my transcript, and the most Ive ever learned in a class. If you want an A, plan to dedicate your entire life to the class. Mark is amazing and youll learn more Anatomy than you will in med school or anywhere else. People get into residencies from this class.
Mark is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is so passionate about anatomy and loves teaching. I am one of his teaching assistants for the class so I have seen countless students go through this class. If you want to do well you have to attend class everyday and study regularly. There is no way around this. The lab is also so fun!!
Mark is a phenomenal teacher. He shows passion & excitement regarding anatomy; I have thoroughly enjoyed learning anatomy from him. My only complaint is the cost of textbooks. It is roughly $150 for textbooks & an additional $110 for an online program which closely resembles Canvas to do homework. Very frustrating. But the lab is very fun & useful!
Mark is a great professor who really knows his anatomy. He likes to spend his time talking about tubes, balloons, and lotion. When he is not busy discussing these topics, he can be found at his side hustle telling embryo stories.
Amazing, honestly, best professor I think I have ever had.
Mark is a great guy, and this is one of the hardest classes you will take due to the amount of information he will require you to learn and understand. Do not overload your schedule if you take this class (that was the mistske I made). I highly recommend you skip the ebook and buy the physical textbook if possible.
Mark is an outstanding professor who is passionate about the course material and about delivering the best quality of education. Anatomy, just like any other biology course, is memory intensive, so you must dedicate lots of time to studying. Also, this class doesn't just teach you human anatomy. It teaches you how to be a better student.
Before taking anatomy, I already knew that Mark was one of the best known and most respected professors at the U. After taking his course, I also learned he was one of the most caring. Mark's primary goal is student success, all he asks is that you put in the work, which for anatomy is a lot, but if you put in the work, it is extremely rewarding.
This class really is what you make of it. If you want an A be prepared to put it hours of work every week to achieve it. If you want a C thats cool too. Strong curve makes it so you can fail and still get a C. Its hard but not impossible
Mark is one the most knowledgeable about anatomy. He does want you to do well, and he cares but its still hard. This class killed my mind and sanity. You need to study everyday, do your workbook and coloring. Get Origin and Insertion down immediately, it will haunt you! Don't get behind, study all the time. Expect to dedicate your life for an A!
Mark is probably my favorite teacher to date. He makes you work hard for your grade, but he is the most caring teacher ever. If you go to him with personal issues he is incredibly accommodating. Questions? Can't make it to TA's office hours or his? Just email him. Mark is a great teacher and will put in the effort to help you.
Mark has fine tuned a truly amazing anatomy course. It is very engaging and really fascinating. The TA's are great and a god send to help with all the information thrown at you through out the year. This is a class you CAN'T cram for. Trust me I tried the first test and I totally bombed it. Keep on top of your work and find a good study group.
Hard stuff but its all pictures. My recommendation? Take this class with fewer credits or easier courses. You are going to WORK UNTIL YOU DIE. Its the greatest experience I have had so far nevertheless. You're gonna suffer, but be happy about it.
This is one of the most rewarding classes I have taken at the University of Utah. Mark is an amazing professor and has interesting lectures which are hard to find in science classes. You definitely have to put in a lot of work, but if you do you are guaranteed a good grade. He doesn't try and trick you.
Mark is such an amazing guy! you can really tell how much he knows and cares about the content that he is teaching! I will not lie though, this is the hardest class I have ever taken, be prepared to do A LOT of studying. His tests are super hard, but he gives you all of the tools and resources you need to succeed you just have to do the work!
mark gives great lectures and they are very interesting. he is very helpful in answering your questions during office hours or review. he's also made us laugh in class, he's a cool guy. the course is difficult & you need to put in a lot of time and effort into it if you want to pass. anatomy was my most stressful class, but also my favorite.
Mark is an Amazing professor and really wants to help his students succeed in the class. He gives his students the right material to study and Ace his exams. It is just up to the students to use them.
He requires a lot of his students. He gives you a lot of resources, but the resources conflict and you often don't know what he actually wants. He wants you to know HIS drawings and HIS interpretations inside-and-out. I studied 30+ hours a week and still ended up with an A- (ruined my 4.0). He likes to say "come on guys, this is easy stuff" lol
One of my favorite classes I have taken at the U. I learned so much and really enjoyed this class. Study hard and keep up with the material. Falling behind is hard to come back from. Mark is willing to help and explain things in other ways which helped me greatly.
A real legend. Very hard class but I have learned more in this class than any I have ever taken
Mark is the best professor I have ever had. The material is tough and you have to really work for your grade but his lectures are fantastic and he gives you the tools to succeed. On top of that you actually learn the material and are better prepared for a future career in medicine. The toughest class Ive taken but also the most rewarding.
Mark is a good professor, he cares about his students but you have to put in the work. His class is extremely difficult. Get ready to study at least 2 hours a day (potentially more). Do not take other hard classes during this semester (if you want an A). His class is hard but a good grade is attainable.
please name another professor who creates their own textbooks and workbook which is just as fun, dedicated, and love teaching as much as Mark Nielsen.... I'll wait Anyway although this class is hard and a ton of work but it is definitely very straightforward and fair and I would take this class again if I could!
Honestly, I got the grade I deserved (C-). Definitely show up to class because it reinforces the material you learn in lab and helps you fill out your workbook. You need to definitely work on your workbook because his exams are literally the workbook. Do your best on exam 1/2 because those will save your grade. Good luck... I'm retaking this class
Mark is a great professor. The class is definitely hard and if you struggle to memorize information, then expect to dedicate a good portion of your time to studying so you can pass.
This class is very hard, but like others say you MUST PUT IN THE WORK! Studying everyday & filling out the workbook is the best way to stay on top of the material. Take advantage of TA hours & SI! SI Exam Reviews are very helpful so go if you can! Lab is great so try and pay attention & take good notes. Make study groups, ask questions, and STUDY!
There is no doubt that Mark is a phenomenal teacher. He organizes the fast amount of information into digestible resources. Study as much as you can reasonably manage everyday, go to at least the SI review sessions before exams, do your workbook, go to class, and don't be afraid to ask questions for clarification.
If you don't go to lecture and pay attention you probably won't do very well. Also, do your workbook and get it checked by TA's!! Mark is one of the sweetest professor's I've ever had and if you ever need to talk to him don't feel scared in doing so.
I hate to admit this, but Mark is a really great professor. He gives way too much work and expects way too much from his students, but I did learn. I ignored my friends' warnings about how much work I'd have to put into this class and greatly regretted it. The lab itself feels like a second class more than it does a lab.
Mark is an amazing professor. His class is very hard, and demands a lot of time and effort so be prepared for that. The lab feels more like a second class than it does a lab so make sure to attend and study the manual. Mark has the class laid out super well and gives you the "recipe for success" in his class. If you do what he asks, you'll do well.
Stay on top of the content and do the workbook problems and you'll do fine. There's little graded homework, and no clickers or anything during class. But go to every class, he doesn't post complete notes. He does make you buy hundreds of dollars of materials he wrote and created, which is annoying. I would definitely recommend the SI sessions.
This class is difficult. Everyone goes into it thinking they can get away with little studying and do fine. Do not attempt that with this course. Stay on top of the material!! This man is not at all understanding. Even during this whole pandemic, where prof should realize not everyone has it easy, he accepts no excuses, no matter how valid.
Mark is a fabulous teacher and a funny guy. He knows Anatomy extremely well. Class is tough but getting the grade that you want is doable. Be sure that you ALWAYS follow along with the textbook and do your workbook, as his tests are extremely similar! TA and SI sessions were also extremely helpful. I loved this class and I learned so much!
Good professor as he knows his stuff. Hard class though, you need to be prepared to do like 2 hours of anatomy everyday. Follow and fill out the lecture manual and workbook, attend TA sessions, ask questions. Go through past exam papers and look for out for the main topics. Do all homework and don't leave prepping for the test last minute.
Mark Nielson is probably the best instructor I ever had in undergrad. He asks a lot of his students, but he is fair, considerate, and truly cares about the education of the students. After going through this course and Advanced Human Anatomy, it made my med school anatomy a breeze.
This semester was completely online because of covid and I definitely feel like the professor made the exam questions 10x harder to make it so people cannot cheat. This class was a living hell for me and i hope i never have to take an online course from him again.
Makes you buy his book, but its not for money. He cares a lot about his work and really makes you think. Its an insanely hard class but you get so much out of it. "just think about it"-Mark.
Mark's lectures gave me something to really look forwards to, but there is a lot of work involved. It is worth it to spend some extra hours going over the material again and using all the resources you have, including the workbook and the S.I sessions. When I took the class in spring 2021 the tests were very heavy, but the weekly homework was easy.
Fantastic lecturer, even through online instruction. However, he rewrites the class's book often so you HAVE to buy it brand new. It's not even a textbook, it's a fill in guided notebook. Can't help but think of how much money he's pocketing from this many students buying the $200 book every semester.
Mark is a very good professor and knows his stuff, but his tests are so hard. Anyone you ask will say the same thing. Expect tons of hours to be put towards studying if you want a good grade. This class is very interesting and one of my favorites, it just takes a lot of studying. I've heard he makes the online tests harder than the in-person ones.
Look, Mark is a good guy. His lectures are usually pretty interesting but sometimes the slow tone of his voice will rock you to sleep. I took his online course which he made more difficult than needed due to cheating. He expects a lot from his students so be prepared to work hard. Under no circumstances should you take this online. A LOT of work.
Never had a professor worse than him, I'm sure he's a lot better in person, but online, I'd never recommend this professor. Lectures felt useless, opted to study the material from outside sources instead. Made testing so complicated that he accidentally cut off all students 30 min early during 3rd midterm. Hope he's more organized if you take him,
After the second exam, Mark became absolutely convinced that a MAJORITY of the class was cheating. Average for 3rd exam was failing. He let us drop an exam after that. Things didn't always go smoothly but Mark took responsibility for his last-minute changes to the exam formatting which ultimately worked better for me.
Anatomy is by far one of the hardest classes you'll take at the U. Mark is an amazing professor and is one of the most knowledgable people I know. He is passionate about anatomy and truly wants to teach others. You will truly have to put in the work to succeed in his class. Go to Mark's office hours and utilize the TA's. Don't fall behind.
Mixed feelings. Mark is incredible! If you do exactly what he says you will easily get an A. However, most people can't dedicate 2+ hours daily to study anatomy. He shies away from online components that would make the course easier. IDK if this is a +/- but if you put his recorded lectures on 2x speed it makes him talk as fast as a regular person.
Mark was the most incredible professor I've ever had. This class was TOUGH (if it was up to me it would be worth 8 credit hours). But Mark gives you all the tools you need, including a workbook that is extremely close to the exams. Follow his steps of success and you can get an A
I did well in this class, did not have a lot of homework, and was very test-heavy. Mark likes to keep his wallet fat, if you repeat you need to buy the workbook again. Mark is more concerned about his textbook monopoly and making money off of students than being a teacher. I recommend taking this over the summer with the alternative teacher.
Such a hard class. Mark is so passionate but he expects too much for an intro class. He's a legend in the Anatomy field and I'm glad that I had the chance to study under him. Get ready to spend 3-5 hours a night on studying alone if you want to get an A.
