Okuhata was a great professor! We read three books all relating to the time in history we were discussing. After finishing each book, we had an exam based off of lecture and the book. Final exam was not cumulative. No extra credit, and participation points are part of your overall grade, so show up to class or let him know you wont be coming.
The class consisted lectures and reading. There were only 3 multiple choice tests. Fairly easy.
Highly recommend! This quarter we read 3 novels: each chapter before lecture, you won't be lost but specific things he says will be on exam. 3 exams, one for each novel & non-cumulative. Though it may be lots of work, this period with this prof is great and I highly recommend.
This professor is so cool! He makes the lectures interesting and easy to learn. I didn't even have to study much for the exam because I knew everything! (I got an 87%). I've never done well in any history class, before this one.
Really easy class! He does a great job teaching and connecting with his students. The lectures are really interesting and for someone who's not a big fan of History I actually learned a lot. Just read what he assigns and the Quick Responses (that are rarely assigned) become extremely easy. The 3 exams are not difficult whatsoever.
Do yourself a favor and take Prof. Okuhata, he is an amazing professor! Class is reading heavy, but is necessary to answer reading questions every so often. Exams are easy as long as you show up to class, read, and engage yourself. Lectures are more than interesting and the material is easily understandable. I highly recommend this professor!
Took this class for a GE,I heard its a fairly easy A. First half of the quarter is fairly well, once you get into the the second half of the quarter mainly towards the end of book two and all of book three, its all just biased liberal rants and I truly find it hard to understand and be able to elaborate on a biased lecture on something i dont get?!
Umm Okuhata is honestly the most amazing professor I've ever had. I found the class mind numbingly easy but damn this dude cares about you, cares about history, and forces you to see things from all sides. This man is PASSIONATE about teaching and anybody who peppers a lesson with Bob Dylan lyrics, deserves respect. Also, he's easy on the eyes.
Professor Okuhata is not the worst, he just likes to state his mind. He does require you to read 3 books the first one was interesting but the last two were confusing. After a reading assignment the next day he gives you a little quiz, it is only one question but you have to elaborate on your understanding of the reading. There wasn't a studyguide
The class was easy just go to class and read. The readings are not too long and his lectures are good he's very passionate about the subject. You wont regret taking his class.
This class was easy and straight-forward. You have to read 3 books. The first was pretty interesting but the last 2 were kinda boring so I just skimmed the chapters. He sometimes gives surprise mini quizzes on the reading but as long you write something down he'll give you credit. His lectures were pretty interesting. Midterm/final are MC.
Very cool, expects you to speak at least 5 times over the quarter; has a question you must answer and turn in at the beginning of almost every class based on the assigned reading. Even if you're not super into history, it's still a pretty interesting surface level class.
Very strict
He is a cool person outside of class but in class he grades very strict and is stuck in his own ways like a complete different person. I think it is better to find another teacher.
I am not the best student at cal poly, i failed this class the first time i took it with a different professor. I retook this class this professor okuhata with the mindset to get an A. I did all of the reading and studied a good amount before the exam. If you want an A in the class, get ready to do your reading. He's an awesome professor. 10/10
Prof. Okuhata keeps things interesting throughout his lectures w/ powerpoints & mini documentaries. I didn't really think he was strict. You're required to read four books throughout the class. I personally didn't like the last one but everything else is interesting. 3 multiple choice exams. Just show up, read, and pay attention. You'll do fine.
Tough grader
easy and enjoyable. highly recommend!
Prof Okuhata is great he uses a variety of historical evidence (books, pictures, songs, videos) to establish the context of the time in history. He never imposes the "Truth" on you but merely informs you and allows you to make whatever you want of the information. He gives 3 tests including the final which is non-cumulative and you read 4 easy books
Believed his class "plagiarized" instead of paraphrased
He gives very interesting lectures! To succeed you must do the reading and take notes. Attendance is important to doing well, many of the test answers are from the lectures. Hes super nice as well!
Okuhata is a great choice for HST 2202, but his class is not an easy A; in order to do well on his exams you have to actually do the readings and listen in lecture. His lectures are great and interesting, but the reading can be terribly boring at times (need to get 4 books). It was usually about 40-60 pages between classes (MWF schedule).
Prof. Okuhata is very passionate and knowledgeable. He is lecture heavy (but not boring). He tests mostly off of the 4 books read, and a bit from the articles we read. They're all slow reads, but he will change them if needed per semester. There are 2 midterms and 1 final, which are the only things graded. Highly recommend taking him.
Okuhata is a fun professor as his lectures were really interesting and funny; however, the test and reading was such a pain. We read a total of 4 books and the tests are 90% based off of that and some concepts. Luckily, Okuhata does curve all the tests and gives grade boosts. His class is simple but quite difficult if you don't read and attend.
Not a clear grading criteria; hard grader
Requires 4 books in print to read individually that are the sole topic of tests. Lectures mandatory but not useful because he gets distracted with personal examples and doesn't relate what you read to what you need to know for exams. Interesting and passionate professor but if you don't like history, his class doesn't help.
I like this guy as a professor. His classes are intriguing and has a unique, refreshing approach on history, but his exams are impossible to do well on unless you memorize every single detail of the 4 mandatory books throughout the semester. Ugh.
if you don't read his 40-60 pages every MWF good luck doing well in his class since his test are strictly off the book. he does cover some material from the book in his lectures but he can go off topic easily. honestly if you don't like reading and are addicted to procrastination like a a drug addict is addicted to coke, don't take this class.
I loved his lectures even though they were strictly technology free, they were super interesting! You have to go to class (he will drop you a letter grade if you miss 3 classes). His tests are super dependent on the readings so make sure you actually read, you will not pass without reading (even if you find spark notes)
Be ready to read a lot for this class. His tests are primarily based on his readings, which consists of 4 books (about 1-2 chapters each day) and other readings he posts on Blackboard. Attendance is mandatory, and electronics are strictly prohibited. His lectures are very interesting however and he makes the class overall an enjoyable experience.
He's honestly a great and easy professor if you just go to class and do the readings. Don't be on your phone - ever, but he works hard to make his lectures fun and I didn't find the class hard as long as I did what was asked. Provides study guides.
Hes a nice guy but makes the course challenging. Only 3 exams all semester based on books read. The tests are all about the books which makes it difficult because theyre long af. I failed every test but somehow managed to pass the class. I feel like he gives pity points to make people pass. Lectures are very enjoyable tho. Very intriguing exp
Lecture too much. Not respecting students sometimes, especially for students who are behind. Not treating students equally. Patience and kindness are reserved for intelligent students only. Not a good person.
Dr. Okuhata gives great lectures. His personal biases may be off-putting to certain people, but he makes up for that by allowing his students to be really inquisitive. Take his class if you want to learn about history, and remember to never use your phone during class!
He was a really great professor. Lectures ere always very interesting, and he really appreciates when students interact with him in class. I wasnt all that excited to learn about US History, but he made lectures so interesting that I really enjoyed my time in his class. There is a lot of reading, but with proper time management it is manageable.
His course is mostly about race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and feminism. You'll be doing some hefty reading on these topics. You must attend. Very radical, sometimes makes crazy claims you might want to look up yourself. He's very reasonable and nice in person though. If you have any problems, shoot him an email and he'll sort it out w/ u.
Hes a sweet and funny man but the reading was just too much and he would always go off topic in lectures and wouldnt be specific on what would be on the test. Graded by 3 test and I failed the first two and I only passed cuz he gave out extra credit for the final. Literally half the class was lost and didnt know what was going on
Okuhata is one of the coolest prof I've had. Not easy, but like the cool uncle in the family. His lectures were funny and informative but he does confuse students sometimes by going off topic. You HAVE TO read in this class in order to pass. Requires 4 small books you can easily buy online for cheap. He grades you on a few exams and they are MC.
DO THE READINGS, GO TO CLASS, AND TAKE NOTES. The readings can be heavy but I assure you, the tests he gives are not difficult at all if you simply do what you are supposed to do as a college student. His lectures are very engaging and interesting. If he makes a bold claim, look it up.
This professor is fair honest & sincere. Enjoy his stories, but overall on the class. He is honest about the assigned readings and what to study for. Alot of professors try to hard to engage with the class. But he does it in second nature. Still bump into him at school and have engaging conversations. This professor has my respect! Take him.
He's a great lecturer. You NEED to read. You won't pass if you don't. There's a total of 3 exams. Before COVID, the exam was a multiple choice test, but during COVID it was essays. I didn't read so I bombed the first exam (55%). I ended with an A because I did well on the 2 essays. Extra credit is participation. He curves if he sees real effort.
He transitioned well to online. Hes very communicative, clear of what he wants and even gives you examples. He wants everyone to pass, so he really helps, you just have to show up. Attendance isnt mandatory, but he discusses the readings and goes over test questions in class. Participation isnt mandatory, he just wants you to be actively present.
I am currently taking Professor Okuhata online. No zooms, just videos of him talking about the lecture. Make sure you watch the WHOLE video - he knows! Make sure you READ what he gives and DO the study guide or you will NOT pass. The class is just based on participation (watching videos) and exams. The lectures are a lot, just pay attention!
currently taking his history 2201 and let me just tell you it is tough out here. this class is just reading and exams, i personally hate it because the readings are super heavy and take a while to get through and on top of it they are so boring, I only recommend this class if you love reading and if not DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS YOU WILL REGRET IT.
This class will be very difficult for those who dislike reading or have poor reading skills. Class rotates on you reading, then participating in class lectures (online) where attendance is key. I failed the first exam believing the lectures would suffice but I was wrong, big time. I later passed the last two exams because I read and took notes.
He made a really good transition to online with his asynchronous video lectures. Just watch all the videos and take notes and you should be able to get an A. Though he is pretty left-leaning in his videos and it translates to his tests which are easy but only make you study and think in one perspective which isnt what I wanted from the class.
Really easy to follow lectures for a virtual class, stay up to date with readings and lectures or you'll fall behind. He's passionate about what he teaches, a really good teacher for genuinely understanding the history, 100% worth it
Lots of reading for homework. 3 tests thats your entire grade. If youre going to take his class do yourself a favor and PLEASE really pay attention to his lectures and take GOOD NOTES. You cannot pass without paying attention even if you read the books. He curves the tests VERY heavily and it helps A LOT.
He has no zoom meetings which makes it very difficult to meet other students to help make study guides. He also removes the lectures off of vimeo after a couple days so cannot even go back to rewatch them. Please do not take this professor and save your time and money. Your whole grade is 3 very hard tests which is pretty bad in my opinion
In general I think he is OK. I agree with what other people said that sometimes he could be so inaccessible, but still, if you emails him I guess most of times he would help. His lectures are actually quite interesting but there is a ton of reading so beware! No paper and 3 tests consist your final grade.
I wouldnt recommend taking this Professor. His lectures, readings, and study guides do not match up with any of the exams. They are very hard. Plus theres no homework or assignments except for exams. So if youre a bad test taker than you shouldnt take him. Although the majority of us were failing, at the end he ended up passing a lot of people
Look, I'm sure he's an alright guy. He's just so horrifically politically biased. I didn't bother to read any of the books that were assigned, all you have to do for the final is choose all the answers that make conservatives look as bad as possible (I got 100%). That's it. I would've loved to learn, but this class is sadly just indoctrination. :
I took HST 2201 online in spring and this was quite an interesting class. I did poorly on my first test but ended up doing my best in the end. The professor delivers lectures via vemo, and lectures are interesting and entertaining. The professor answers emails quickly and is fast at grading tests.
Lots of reading, unbearable amount. Has great lecturers but when it comes to testing time most of the lecture stuff is not on the test. Homework is a lot of reading and each test is based on a book basically and tests ask specific questions. Pretty rough class barely survived. Outside of class, he is a chill dude, like in-office hours.
Lectures are great and informative, but a lot of reading is assigned. There is a quiz every week, and some of the questions are based on the reading- I've skipped a few readings and got pretty low scores on the quizzes as a result. Midterms/essays decide if you pass the class or not. Overall, a great professor with a great personality.
Look, if you don't want to read a lot and depend on midterm/essays or tests for your grade, do not take this class. There's lots of readings and lectures are like 40-50 minutes. It's horrible.
The grading isn't particularly clear. On the syllabus, it's 30% quizzes, 35% Midterm and 35% Final, but he forgets to mention that 10% of that is also attendance on video lectures. I did pretty good on my midterm essay & okay on my quizzes. but I'm failing the class since I didn't attend video lectures because I had other stuff to attend to.
Followed everything he wanted for the final and only got an 18/35. Told us to constantly that if we needed to help to reach out to him. When I reached out for help he basically just said "yea just look at your notes". On top of that refuses any extra credit so don't count on that. Refused to round a 68 and instead dropped it even more. DO NOT TAKE
The hardest class I've had don't take unless you want to fail. Please don't waste your money on this class choose a different professor. Lectures every other day and quizzes every Friday worth 50 points( too much for no reason) Midterm and final. Two books required. If you take this class god be with you seriously.
Don't bother taking this professor. You fail one exam, you're not passing the class. Lots of reading and boring lectures. Graded on 3 things so no room for mistakes. Also somehow you get graded on attendance even though not on syllabus and its an asynchronous course?
As a Professor for a GE course, he takes it way over the top. Does not round grades, only bases your grade off of quizzes and exams. No extra credit, no homework assignments, and is not clear on the grading process. Took this class asynchronously and the grade that was displayed on Canvas was 7% higher than my ACTUAL grade. Save your time and money
This is going to be the most honest review you will see. This is by far the worst professor in Cal Poly. And when I say the WORST I mean THE WORST. Spare yourself a headache, stress, and time, and take another professor for any course he may teach. Im surprised he's not fired yet, hopefully he will be soon.
Tons of reading, if you actually read you would do good on the quizzes. Midterm and final were bs but whatever. He critiques very hard on those and you are going to want to plan ahead. Wouldn't recommend but if you get him good luck. Make sure to actually watch lectures and read cuz he can tell if you don't or not which can affect your grade
Okuhata has been by far my favorite history professor. His lectures are especially interesting and keep you hooked. The quizzes, midterms, and exams are easy enough if you keep up with your reading. He also drops two of your lowest quizzes. The only critique is the amount of reading you have to do each week, but it's definitely doable.
Yes its true theres lots of reading and he grades you on a few things. Everyone talks about how you cant mess up a quiz yet they fail to mention its open notes and book. Plus you can always met with him during office hours and ask him what main ideas you should focus on. On top of that he raises a whole letter grade if he sees that you try.
Terrible professor try to avoid at all cost. just is not clear on grading and is just a pain.
To be honest, he's a funny guy and he could be engaging; but he sucks as a professor. His office hours aren't much help. Not to mention, he likes giving one or two word responses to help you. So, if you plan on taking him don't!
So much reading and our grades were based off of 4 assignments. I definitely do not recommend if you already have a busy schedule.
Get ready to read because you'll need to for his exams and a report. His lectures are usually from the last reading assignments. He's a charismatic person however his lectures are always lacking.
This class was asynchronous for me with three lectures to watch every week. Professor Okuhata's lectures can be a bit long and boring, but most of the information needed to pass the class is provided in the video lectures. He is forgiving and understanding of problems if you are straightforward and do most of the work.
He is very sweet and very passionate about History. He cares about his students a lot. You need to take A LOT of notes during his class and I'd recommend recording his lecture. Everything he teaches will be on the tests. Open notes tests and he gives you a study guide to have during the tests. He made history interesting.
Professor Okuhata is passionate about what he does and it is evident through his lectures. Lectures were engaging and always interesting. Lots of required reading but everything was relevant. Exams were open note and book and study guides provided everything that was going to be covered. Genuinely one of my favorite professors at CPP.
How to succeed: Go to class everyday to get full points, did poor on first 2 exams, but I aced the final paper cause i skimmed through book to get evidence and gist of it. He grades tough on frq for exams so be specific and correct. Final paper: Make original thesis statement, with 3 arguments, support with evidence and you will do okay. Nice guy.
Very enthusiastic professor who genuinely cares about his students. He covers topics in great detail and relates events to possible events we've experienced. The 2 tests consist of 12 questions, 5-7 multiple choice, 2-4 short answers. Highly recommend him because his lectures make you look at life differently, while also covering important topics.
He's like Andrew Tate with the misplaced self-confidence of Jordan Peterson. His thesis is on Black Manliness with a chapter titled "Their First Chance at Manliness, Black Men and Firearms." He Spent 20 minutes slandering the Engineering dept and boasting about working security and MMA.
He said that personal agency is synonymous with disobedience and implies heavily that women are responsible for their own oppression. He opened the class with a speech about how learning is about open discussions now, but only people who raise hands can speak and he doesn't take questions very seriously. Very insecure.
One of the worst professors for my 1st year at CPP. The midterm questions are mostly not even in the book that he assigns and the answers he wants are "up to interpretation" however in the discord that we are in, literally 80% of the people are getting Ds and Fs on the midterms. Personally, I have done okay with a B and C for the first 2 midterms
A lot of reading. I feel like I should be learning from the professor then just reading about history on a book.
The lectures were great, he goes over instructions really well but VERY hard on grading especially with written portion. Heavy on reading and only few graded assignments, heavily weighed. Has a final essay so take good notes on the books you might need to refer back to.
Take good notes because everything he says is on the test. Buy the actual books as you can use them for test but if you take good notes you'll be okay. his exams are true and false and written responses, make sure you include key vocab/ words to get full credit. homework is reading and making a question but becomes optional at the end. he's cool af
Thought I had it in the bag until the final and the final essay. Attendance matters a lot, you will fail if you are absent a lot. Many pop quizzes, many readings, class notes, no homework. Exams and quizzes are open note/ book, however, he overcomplicates them and makes them confusing on purpose. (Like dawg, this a GE course). Funny dude tho.
AVOID, if you can avoid taking this professor, please do so. All the grading is for exams and pop quizzes. You never know when these quizzes are, and the study guides given for the exams aren't even sound, as the questions are entirely different. I don't understand why there are good reviews. For this semester, he made us buy four textbooks. AVOID.
Okuhata's class is cool. There is a lot of reading, so you'll need the books for that, and tests are multiple choice. Literally as long as you do the reading, you'll pass the class. Anyone who failed was probably not doing the reading...why would you take a college class, do no work, and expect to do well? I recommend him if you want a chill prof:)
He tries to give you high hopes at the beginning of the semester saying he will drop you lowest quiz grade and potential raise your grade at the end of the semester by 10 percent, but for the majority of the class he does not do that, even with perfect attendance, the average on the essay exam was an F which should already tell you alot.
He is aware this is a GE course, yet when it comes to grading the Final Exam Essay he is a tough grader, which I get and is understandable. But if you are going to talk about how you want to play with your daughter's baking toy over what the course material is in class, that's not helpful especially if you want students to understand the material.
I barely, and I mean barely survived this class. Worst class I've ever taken at CPP. There r only 2 exams and 1 final essay, not much help to ur grade. He had us read chapters and chapters worth of material, about 90% wasn't even on the exams. Only reason I passed is I clutched up on my final essay & if u have good attendance he bumps up ur grade.
I took his HST 2201 and EWS 2041. For the EWS class, he even added the ch/pg for the study guides on the exam/final to help us out more. For both classes, as long as you participate or get decent grades on quizzes and go to a few office hours, he can raise your grade up at least 10%. He gets rid of the lowest 2 grades on the quizzes.Take his class!
Considering I actually enjoy learning about history, this class was dreadful. He put in our grades so incredibly late that I thought I was solid and I was passing, but turns out I failed. I'm sure there are better professors for sure so don't take him but if you have to, make sure you're on top of it. This class is easy to put aside for "later"
There is a lot of reading in the class, and there are no assignments besides the final essay, pop quizzes, and exams. He tells you they are open-book quizzes and tests from the start, and you may think that is very good till you see the test questions that are formed. Overall, would not take it with this professor.
Dr. Okuhata is a very memorable professor in regards to his lectures but as for the readings, beware. The exams HEAVILY rely on your knowledge of the reading which may be accompanied by a pop quiz. You can pay attention to the lectures all you want but if you miss a portion of the reading, forget it.
The professor is a cool dude. I like how he relates stuff from the past to today. However, there is SO MUCH READING(imo). And a lot of questions on the exams are from the books, not the lecture, which I don't like. We teach ourselves atp. The quizzes can be annoying since you never know what day they are. Overall, if you HATE reading, avoid.
There will be a reading assignment EVERY class, but that is the only "homework". His lectures are amazing and super in-depth. There will be occasional pop quizzes based off the readings. His exams are based off the study guides and everything is open-book, open-note. I absolutely loved this class and would highly recommend dr. okuhata
During the first week he told us not to look at the reviews on rmp and that we would all do well. Our class relates with the review that says he does go off topic and talk about his past life and complains about the income people at the university are making. Not an honest guy, he seems chill at first but doesn't follow through on his word.
Could not find class, this is for EWS2041. Lots of EC, exams are straightforward. Weekly quizzes, LOTS of reading. Not bad overall but meh.
Lotta reading but he only quizzes on the main ideas. Weekly quizzes but they are really easy. One essay, one easy midterm, no exams. Dr. O's an amazing lecturer, very easy to talk to and down to Earth. It would be hard to mess up this class
Dr. Okuhata is an amazing lecturer. His classes are VERY reading-heavy, but all of the reading enhance your understanding of the content. There is no busy work. Not an easy A, but you will walk away from this class with a great understanding of the history and social context of the time.
This is for EWS 2041. Most of what you learn has to be read via textbook and the lectures are not very helpful. There are discussions and quizzes every week which can be kind of difficult. There is also an end of the year final essay and a midterm. Overall was chill but not the best teacher.
(EWS 2041) There is a lot of reading, a weekly assignment on the reading, and a quiz after every lecture. But it's very doable and the quiz is open book and notes. 1 easy online midterm and a final essay is all else the class has, and the class is just lectures but they're pretty interesting and the prof is a great speaker, very fun, caring guy.
Dr. Okuhata was an absolutely fantastic professor. I'd perhaps go as far as to say that he has been my favorite professor so far at CPP. He's incredibly down to Earth, his lectures were engaging, and you could tell that he cared. There were weekly discussion posts, quizzes, readings, one midterm, and a final essay. Hard grader, but incredibly fair.
this is my second time taking this prof, i took him last year for HST2202. He makes the content very engaging and draws upon many examples that students can connect to. Discussion posts are pretty simple and the midterm was very easy. his final essays for both courses were relatively straightforward just follow his prompt and he wants originality.
I love Professor Okuhata, great lectures, really knowledgeable, and he likes to engage with students. However, for a GE class, it's a lot of work. It isn't difficult, but for a GE it's rough. Honestly very comparable reading workload to a 3000+ level history course. Loved the class and Okuhata, but maybe look elsewhere for GE credits.
Don't do it.This class stressed me out more than any of my other classes and its literally intro to ethnic studies.Seriously just wait and take another prof,if u dont show up to class consider ur A an automatic C.He does these pop quizzes on readings that were the end of me. I never knew what he wanted. Insanely tough grader. I wish I just waited
