Class material completely encapsulated within the lecture slides, book is mostly supplemental. 95-100% of the exam questions taken from review slides. Allowed one page of notes during exam. Copy as much of the review slides onto your page of notes WORD-FOR-WORD. Mostly short answer questions, with a little True/False and fill-in-the-blank.
Very knowledgeable, but sometimes forgets students have no exposure to the things he references. Solo assignments were easy, but inadequate guidance for team assignments. Tests are easy, he gives comprehensive reviews and allows a sheet of notes. No reason to do badly on the tests.
Tests mostly based on slides material, but he allows one full page (front and back) of notes for exams. Homework and projects are mostly group work. Dr. Paulk has quite the CV and a lot of interesting fascinating stories if you can get him to talk about them! Would definitely recommend his class.
Professor Paulk is one of the best professors I have ever taken. He is very knowledgeable about the subject. He has great industry experience. I find that many of the topics he discusses comes up in interviews and have real relevant experience in project management. Definitely take his class!!!
Dr. Paulk is an amazing lecturer and has a lot of experience in the field. He tries to pass that experience on to us by telling stories and giving examples. His tests and HWs are straight forward. His group projects on the other hand are confusing. He doesn't tell you what he wants, he expects you to figure it out. If you are wrong big points off
Very qualified lecturer. The material is conceptually easy, and he teaches both the practical and the theory. He's a tough grader, but drops your lowest homework grades and lets you bring a page of notes (front and back) to the exams. He also curves as well. His lectures are interesting, and he tells a lot of interesting stories
Dr. Paulk's grading on the group projects is nothing more than him adding new expectations never outlined in the project's assignment. Grading on tests and quizzes is equally frusterating. Would not recommend.
Class is fairly easy, he grades harshly on tests and project paper. He also seems to curve on some assignments. It seemed to me was trying to get his grade curve peak inside 80-90 instead of just the class average above 80. Group project was pointless as far as learning. Good lectures, only reason to take him. I decided to not take him again.
Dr. Paulk is a good professor. Lectures are clear and to the point. Homeworks are super easy. Tests can be hard, but he lets you bring in a page of notes. If you cover all of the important topics on it, you'll be fine. He gives pop quizzes, so make sure you attend class regularly. The group project is ongoing and basically repeats the homeworks.
I hated the quizzes!! When he finish the lecture he gives a review at the end of lecture and its impossible to catch or memorize everything during the lecture. His exam are like the homework but a little tricky. Make sure you understand the material really in the homework. He says the HW should take 15 min to do but it take hours to do it.
Excellent instructor with interesting stories. Well versed in the subject matter and conveys it well. Quizzes and HWs were a little nit-picky, detail oriented and ambiguous. Professor is very specific in how things should be formatted. Examples in PowerPoints are lacking. Exams are straightforward and similar to HWs. I recommend this professor.
Professor Paulk is an amazing teacher! He is in no way an easy teacher but when he teaches, you learn. He goes over slides with many examples, he gives out homework related to those examples, and the tests are not too bad. He makes sure the students are on track and he never turns down any question. He is very knowledgeable in SE and teaches well!
Great teacher! I know he doesn't usually teach the class that I took but he was an awesome teacher. Very knowledgeable. He gave real world examples for what we learned. He expects you to know the material inside and out, but he covered everything he expected in class with coded examples that he wrote on the board. He likes the class to be involved.
Ok, some people say this class is hard cause of the pop-quizzes, but it really isnt! The quizzes are given, but only 10%, and they are all true false so 50 percent chance you get above a 50. Tests allow one sheet notes front and back, and they are easy! Project is also kind of weird, but overall easy. Take him!
His depth of knowledge and ability to express it are unmatched by any other professor at UT Dallas. He's full of industry experience, knowledge of standards, and statistics on everything imaginable in CS. His quizzes are not difficult if you read the slides 10 minutes beforehand and hit the key points. I did this and got several 9/10's.
Dr. Paulk gives very good grading criteria and has good lectures that help greatly in solving the homework. Exams are basically some quiz questions combined with homework-type problems, so studying those puts you in a good position to succeed.
pop quizzes are painful and takes forever to grade midterm
Pop quizzes are hard because its not always over the most recent material and it took longer than it should have to get the first exam back.
The TA grades projects very easily however when it comes to exams Paulk is wants exact and concise answers so partial credit is not an option. This makes his tests hard to ace unless you understand everything very well.
Dr. Paulk did an excellent job. It is not as conceptual as the other SE upper-level courses. The quizzes are tough (worth 10% of your grade). The exams can be difficult, but you are not required to memorize anything. As long as you are keeping up with the HWs, you should be able to do well. Learned a lot about overall code behavior and testing.
He comes from a long background of software management and thus the material flows effortlessly from him and I enjoy listening to him most of the time.
He's a very intelligent professor, do the homework, show up to class, be prepared to take pop quizzes regarding the slides you just covered. If you don't ask questions he will assume you are ready to take the quiz. SO ASK QUESTIONS! And you know the saying" there's no such thing as a dumb question" yeah, forget that. He will make you feel stupid.
This professor is horrible. Don't take him if you don't have experience in programming. He teaches you nothing, but expect you to solve complicated problems for the exams.
ok honestly, I know a lot of people who are big fans of his class but I don't see it. The first day he claimed that he doesn't check his emails and will reply to emails in 3 days so we shouldn't bother emailing him. Which just really ticked me off because he refused to do his JOB. He just has an air of not caring and that is just not ok with me.
Honestly does the minimum effort needed to do his job. Pop quizzes are based on class trivia instead of useful broader scale concepts. The Tests are merely a larger version of his quizzes. And his lectures are him reading off the slides from the power-point. He has a few stories he shares, but ultimately dont help you understand the class. Avoid.
This professor just doesn't care and expects you to know the material that he doesn't teach. Has pop quizzes and spends most of the class rambling.
He just reads from the powerpoints
Paulk has a pretty bad attitude about his students and teaching in general but if you can get over that, his class is pretty straightforward. He exclusively reads off PowerPoints and gives pop quizzes. Tests mostly based on the weekly homework assignments. Just avoid asking questions because he'll be condescending to you if he deems it stupid.
He is quite a boring professor. However, I found him quite helpful during his office hours. His quizzes and exams are very straightforward. All you have to do is read the book.
Doesn't take attendance, but has pop quizzes over material so its in your best interest to attend. Goes on tangents often during the lecture so you're better off studying the powerpoints on your own. Worst of all, expect mundane group assignments with group members assigned by Paulk. Overall, try to take anyone but this joke of a professor
Grumpy power point reading machine. Hope to god that you don't rely on him responding to your emails because he takes 2 weeks to reply with a word reply. Genuinely doesn't care about the students, and has a terrible attitude. The class is pretty easy though. pop quizzes every few lectures. he let's you bring A4 front and back sheet to the exams.
The pop quizzes are the worst part of the class. He will put them at either the beginning or end of class so you can never be late or leave early. He is not understanding for whatever reason if you do miss them. The test averages are usually in the 70s. If you can avoid this professor do so. The worst professor i have had. Doesnt care bout students
mostly fair, but throws a few curve balls. While tests will be over material given in quizzes and HWs, if he has lectured on any material between the latest quiz and a test, expect that to be on the test AND to later take that quiz. quizzes often given weeks after material was lectured over.
His slides are enough for learning the material, and his lectures are just him reading the slides while giving examples from his experience about whatever topic he is reading on that day. This class is easy if you pay attention and study. If you don't, well you won't pass.
The class is very rigid. Which is good in that the grading criteria is very clear. The slides are ok, but are very lengthy. The lectures are stale. I don't feel like I walked away with anything practical/useful. Of course I learned something, I just wasn't given the sense of its value. The pop quizzes and fill in the blank questions are irritating.
Even though his rating is low, Dr. Paulk is truly an amazing professor. He really makes sure you learn real-world experience and is willing to help if you just ask questions. Great guy!
Gives a lot of pop quizes. Well respected as he wrote the software CMMI. My biggest gripe is that he graded harder on the exams than his TAs did on the homework. In the end, I really did know the material and I am a better developer after taking his course.
Dr. Paulk taught the class using powerpoints with info taken from the textbook, so no need to buy the book. The powerpoints are also online. He gave out quizzes which were ungraded, and were really just study guides for the exams. Homework was adequate (no busywork). If you understand the homework and the quizzes you should do well on the exams.
Really knowledgeable about CS and has a lot of interesting stories/factoids to tell
Paulk is very respected in his field, but I don't feel like that is applicable to his lectures. Class isn't difficult, regular load. But he reads straight off PP and goes off on tangents. Pop quizzes are difficult, the q are random and the median of the class PQ is at 70. He is condescending if he thinks the question you ask is stupid, beware.
I honestly was looking forward to programming when i came into a class called software engineering, but the first thing he says is that there won't be any coding in the class. The class can be useful for when you get a job and want to stay in it, however, because of the quizzes you end up just studying for that the entire lecture
This class is a joke, I'm sorry. "pop" quizzes are predictable and just vocab, tests are 50% vocab and we are allowed to bring a printed piece of paper with ANYTHING we want on it. He knows his stuff and explains it well. If you think this class was difficult, CS isn't for you. Note: Have heard he is a lot more difficult in higher level CS courses
Can be extremely boring lectures, but his class is fairly easy. He will typically have quizzes after each slide deck which are tricky if you don't study the slides constantly, but they only count as 10% of the overall grade. Lets you take a two-sided cheat sheet to tests, so as long as you make a good sheet, you should be able to pass all tests.
Professor Paulk knows his material and teaches it well, is very responsive to student participation and questions. Homework is ridiculously easy, as are short tests that he allows a front and back cheat sheet on. "Pop" quizzes on textbook chapters (slides) come at the end of the class after the class in which the chapter is finished.
Dr. Paulk has plenty of experience in the field and is very knowledgeable. His lectures will prepare you for his class and also give good insight for your future career. His exams contain problems very similar to the homework and multiple choice from the slides. Quizzes can be very tricky but are only 10% of the class. No coding is done either.
Dr. Paulk is very knowledgeable in the field of software engineering. He gives a lot of real world examples in class, and emphasizes what he feels is important. Exams and homework weren't too difficult, but were helpful and graded fairly.
Summer was 50% quiz, 50% assignment. The quizzes were occasionally tricky, but overall this class was very reasonable and easy to get a good grade in if you put in the work. The slides are very useful and easy to refer back to if you forget a concept. Overall, no reason not to take Prof. Paulk for SE.
This fall 2020, we had weekly quizzes ( no honorlock) that are 10 questions, but you had to finish the quiz in 10 min. There will be 12 homework ( some writing assignments, diagrams, etc), and 2 exams. I recommend you shouldn't memorize stuff from his powerpoint since they are too much info.
The professor is really knowledgeable. He shares all his experiences during the lectures. Homeworks also include summary writing of published articles. This is one of the subjects you can count on for an easy A.
This professor is very unsympathetic and doesn't seem to care that much about students. The tests and quizzes are not honorlocked. The tests are relatively fine. His quizzes are however tricky, about 10 minutes per 10 questions, and 20 percent of your grade. I could have an A+ in the class if it weren't for the quizzes.
Very insightful lectures! I felt a lot of what I learned will be useful later in my career. I wish his powerpoints were less wordy, but that's all. Overall, I would strongly recommend him as a professor for Software Engineering.
Assignments and exams are super easy. Almost everything is in some way entirely off the slides. Super straightforward professor with very easy and clear grading criteria.
Really easy assignments and tests: almost entirely off the slides. This class pairs really well with Paulk's SE 3354 class. A lot of the material coincides and sometimes he gives identical or similar test questions and homeworks between the two classes.
Dr. Paulk is a respected professor who gives straightforward lectures. One should listen to his lectures as great wisdom, as many times he will say very practical things relavent to one's future programming career. Dr. Paulk's writing assignments were great ways for people to gain appreciation for the programming past.
Relatively easy class, but very boring. Lectures are very dry and repetitive. His HW grading criteria is terrible. If you make a single mistake he'll arbitrarily slash your grade by 30+ points. Quizzes and tests are pretty easy. No extra credit, and zero tolerance on late work. Groups are assigned, so better hope you get good group members.
All the HW and quiz answers can be found on his slides. As long as you put in some effort you should be getting an A. He replies back to emails quickly too.
May seem intimidating at first, but is actually very down to earth if you approach him respectfully. Very nice and respectful Professor. Easy A if you keep up. Everything is based off slides
Dr. Paulk is an excellent professor, take him if you can. If you listen carefully to his lectures, he fills it with anecdotes of his past in programming along with key pointers one should take seriously when going into their programming career. Allows you to use one cheat sheet for the exam, lenient grader, gives good feedback.
Boring lecturer and just read off the slides. Very passive aggressive in class and in emails, acted like he was way above his students and made them feel stupid for asking questions. Programs not very difficult and pretty self explanatory class. Quizzes and exams based mainly on memorization of the slides with a couple coding questions.
Horrible professor! Lectures are a waste of time as he just talks about his past experience and how successful he was 30 years ago. Many assignments are vaguely written, posted without notice and he gets mad when we ask questions if we don't understand the assignments right away. You will learn nothing taking this course with him.
I would recommend not taking him as he can be either interesting or super boring while lectures as he just reads his slides. tests are 3 exams worth 25 percent each so your grade highly depends on that. There is no extra credit. Sometimes he might just give direct quotations by people and ask if they are true or not so be ready to cram big slides.
Attendance policy is 3 consecutive absences lowers your grade by a letter point. Why am I telling you this? Because there is no point in actually attending class. The exams are open note but don't be fooled because they are tough. The HW assignments are very easy, and so is the team project. Just prepare for exams and you are good to go!
Very hard exams. No extra credit
Class was straightforward. HW's and project were pretty easy. The project was just a team paper and monitoring the process. Class could be boring sometimes but professor gives good insight in the world of management and talks about his past experience. Try not to miss 3 days in a row. Tests were not that bad and lets you have a page of notes.
This professor gets a special kick out of insulting his students. He questions the class's intelligence at least once per class. His lectures are boring, rarely doing anything aside from reading the slides and talking about his glory days 30 years ago. Overall it makes it very hard to stay engaged during class not that you need to be to pass.
3 Exams 75% of total grade. Allows one note sheet on exams at Testing center. Group (randomly assigned groups) Assignments 25% of grade. Group assignments should be 95-100 if you follow instructions and spend the bare minimum time on.
Verbatim from Paulk "This is my retirement job. So I do not care if they fire me". That should put into perspective the effort he puts into the class. Class is very easy. Tests are just the slides. Lecture is him rambling about 30 years ago when he was in the industry. And assignments are very simple and do not take a bunch of time.
Better options than him, the one benefit is attendance is not enforced, and you can bring in a cheat sheet full of content to use for exams. That being said, tests are 75% of the course so you cannot do bad. On top of that, homework's are graded extremely harshly with no room to get lost points back. Take a professor that has some empathy.
Homeworks are easy. Team projects are easy as well. Focus on the exams, that's where you get most of your grade from. DO well on the exams, then you pass the class. Exam material come straight come from the slides. Just copy all of the slides to a cheatsheet and youll be fine!
Dr. Paulk's class was a highly entertaining and enjoyable experience. His wealth of industry knowledge and experience adds a refreshing perspective to the course and helps students really understand the nuances pf project management. The assignments were all very easy and the tests having a cheat sheet makes them very easy to prepare for.
Homework is 25% of the grade and is easy as long as you pay attention to the lectures, although they are quite dull. Exams are 75% divided by 3 exams (so 25% each). Exams are awful. You get to bring a sheet of notes, but the exams have examples far more complex than in class and some questions that are not mentioned on the review at all.
If you take this class the lectures are very boring and very hard to pay attention to. In addition to that, the class is the professor boosting his ego, he tells a lot of stories during the lecture about himself. The homework in the class is pretty straightforward. The exams tend to be about the smallest details in the material.
This was relatively an easy class that I didn't need to worry about. There are individual and team assignments which were very easy to do. He enforced how his opinion on topics is better than what the textbook says and made the answers to exam questions based on that. Grades are curved just by being rounded up a point which is disappointing.
This class was a waste of time. The lecture was him just rambling on about his career. Assignments were easy. The only thing to worry about are the tests. The class is centered around being able to make a cheat sheet. He barely tests your ability to do the work but tests on small, insignificant details from the slides.
I normally hate lectures but his slightly sarcastic/blunt mood makes them a tad more interesting. Lots of homework but pretty easy to do; however, there are also group assignments and both can be vaguely written. He allows a full sheet of notes during the exam where you can shove a ton of slides onto the paper and bring it.
Solid professor! Doesn't make class difficult. HW's were straightforward and has examples on how to do them in the slides. Allows you to have a cheat sheet for the exams. Does talk about his experience in the professional world so you could get some insight on it. Just show up to class and do the HW's and you will be fine.
Exams are somewhat hard, but you can get a good grade if you're able to cram a lot of info on your cheat sheet (1 page front/back). Assignments aren't too bad. Several team assignments but no huge group "project." Tests are worth 75% and are completely based on the slides. Lectures give nice personal anecdotes/wisdom to accompany the slides though.
Calls the class dumb pretty regularly, but don't let his attitude scare you. He is just older and has been in the industry for a while so he knows what he's talking about. To do well, just do the assignments (pretty easy) and start your cheat sheet(1 page front and back) early that way you don't cram 300+ slides a few days before the exam.
The class itself is very boring and all he does is rant about his experience that is completely outdated. Take his class if you don't want to learn anything and just pass, because the tests are just a bunch of obscure points from his presentations that you can print out as he lets you use 1 page. You'll probably get a B since the tests are 90%.
Took him for 2nd semester of emse. Lectures are boring but homeworks and exams are easy.
Good lecturer, easy homework, but 90% of your grade is 3 tests, and the questions are mostly random facts from the slides (you are allowed a one-page front-and-back cheat sheet).
The class was pretty easy, but the exams are a bunch of random facts from the slides. Make sure your cheat sheet is perfect, or you'll miss points on the tests. The HW is pretty easy and the group assignments are not bad either. He does have an attendance sheet, though.
Dr. Paulk's class was amazing! He's like a grandpa telling us a story in front of the fireplace lol. He's been in the game for a long time, so he knows his stuff. Exams were pretty easy, the cheat sheet (front and back) def helps. Assignments, individual and group, are crazy easy and graded leniently. He has office hours almost everyday too!
Homework is pretty chill. Lectures are pretty good. Tests are straight off the slides but believe me when I say you really need every last detail on your cheat sheet.
This man can yap for hours. Sometimes he goes over the same stories bc he forgets he alr told us the story. Cheat sheet allowed 3 exams determine your final grade all mcq. you can miss only 3 lectures before a penalty. recorded lecture and easy group assignments.
Dr. Paulk is very blunt and to the point, and I like that a lot in a professor. He's not afraid to tell it like it is and is a very funny guy sometimes. His exams are easy peasy if you write literally everything on the slides (not exaggerating. put literally EVERYTHING). I took him for 3354 as well, and I'd be glad to take him again.
Really tough grader! Very strict and short tempered! If you miss a group project presentation when you are sick it is an automatic 0. Known for the phrase, "I HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR THAT!". No matter how much you do it is NEVER AN EASY A! Assignments and tests are intentionally made difficult!
