He is a very nice guy, but he is very unhelpful in the classroom. He is completely absent-minded.
My fovorite. professor to ever teach. Everything he lectures is interesting, and is mostly written on the board for you to take accurate notes. Tests are straight forward. Best Teacher!
Less vector problems more teaching guy!
Very absent minded. Test are hard. The Astronomy part is easier than the other physical part. You can pass just see if someone else is available.
very cool guy. extremely cool guy. tests are ridiculous. some days he will be extremely helpful, other days he will make you feel like an idiot when you ask a question. but he's really nice.
Nice guy but makes you feel like and idiot. Needs to chill out and be helpful
Get a hair cut and try to focus on students questions rather than a agenda that you have to finish.
Very nice teacher, interseting class, helpful, you have to study hard to make an A
if you ask him a question he will make you feel like a total idiot. He's mostly concern about himself than his students
If You have to take this class, just make sure he's not your teacher because he will make feel like and idiot if you don't understand.
Must take it upon yourself to learn the material. Does not help much in or out of class. I sent him emails all semester concerning class and he did not return once.
I was in the class with some of those complainers. I found Physics to be hard but Mark to be an excellent lecturer. Some of these posts are from students who wouldn't come to class, wouldn't do their homework and then thought that Physics would come to them naturally. Reading their posts, they might also consider taking English 101.
hes a fine teacher but a horrible person. he doesn't care at all about his students. this is a job for him nothing more. he has some fun easy quiz grades and some harder ones. hes generally a happy friendly looking guy but beyond lecturing and answering questions he doesn't care any more about you or how well you do in his class.
Difficult if you're not used to college level courses. Really challenges you and makes sure you prep for tests.
This guy rocks, he loves what he teaches, and it shows.
Very nice guy. I took Physical Scince 1011, in the 8 week format.Don't do it. My GPA suffered terribly. Not sure if it is the content or the teacher but these concepts are impossible to learn in 8 weeks and Professor Pergrem has no mercy fr those that attempt it.
Very enthusiastic about the subject. Took him for Astronomy. It was very interesting and very difficult. Test are extremely hard. Write down everything he says and do the book work and test shouldn't be that bad.
I took Mr. Pergrem for both Astronomy classes at GHC. It was difficult compared to the rest of my classes, but that is because he expects COLLEGE LEVEL WORK DONE IN HIS CLASSES. If you can't pass his classes chances are you will not succeed at the Junior and Senior level. He is a solid teacher, expects you to learn and you do.
Awesome class
Very passionate teacher who truly enjoys what he does. Always kept his lectures very interesting and amusing with plenty of examples, many of them comical and entertaining, that help you to better understand the material. Probably the best teacher I have ever had.
Pergrem's class is absolutely ridiculous. I'm a straight A student who excels in math, and his class is completely foreign. The man refuses to teach, and instead, makes you learn by yourself through the textbook and online resources. For PHYSICS! The material is almost too difficult to learn by yourself. Do yourself a favor and DON'T TAKE HIM.
Taking his online class was incredibly frustrating. He is passive and treats students like children. He continuously forgets about his online class. If you send an email, it will likely go unanswered. If you are lucky he will answer part of it days later. He repeats assignments so I didn't learn anything new. Do NOT take. Horrible!!
He is a pretty nice guy. I just think he is really bad at teaching physics. His notes are very sloppy and unorganized and hes very fast paced. He always stressed to us to ask questions but when we did, it didnt help anything. Hed answer questions with more questions instead of explaining it so we could learn. I would not recommend taking him.
Doesnt give you feedback! Takes days before he responds to your emails! Does not teach (you have to read the book and teach yourself)! Doesnt keep your grades updated to see if you are passing or no! I would not recommend!
I would avoid at all costs
He is very hard at Physics. In order to pass, you have to to almost all the problems in the book. Physics is a class in which everything is thrown at once; however, once on the other side other ME classes is easier. Some students prefer to Calc 3 before physics because they are similar. Mark is all over the board and he knows his stuff.
This class is insane. The projects are definitely not broad enough for a college student to be able to do. The quizzes are sometimes over 30 questions each. Do not take this class online.
I needed a non-lap science and thought Astronomy would be great. I love the content and can work hard. I took an online one because that was all that was available. The projects cost money for several options and several require other projects. He expects you to do projects in 5 days because he posts them less than a week ahead of due dates.
You have at least 2 quizzes to take every week (30+ questions each). If there is a test that week you have an additional review quiz (80+ questions) which would be helpful if half of the info on it was on the actual test. Then you have random labs and observing sessions that he assigns less than a week before they're due without warning.
Horrible, Horrible, Horrible Teacher.
I am taking ASTR1102 and this class is a legit JOKE. You are expected to completely teach yourself about stars, because he is 100% unavailable. It's only week 7, I have sent multiple emails, and gotten no response. I am a 4.0 student who has a mental breakdown every night from this class. Unless you are GENUINELY passionate about ASTR, don't do it
This class is the worst thing I've ever encountered. It's only week 7 and I want to die. The quizzes are extremely long and difficult, as well as the labs. He acts as if we don't have anything else to do in life. He also never responds to emails; not one of mine have been answered yet. I am a straight A student and I have never struggled this much.
This was the worst class I've ever taken! I had to pay a tutor because he does not teach. His lectures are not clear and the amount of homework is unacceptable. His homework is more than my other classes combined! I thought physics wouldn't be so bad as I excelled in honors physics in high school, but this class is something else.
Hasn't updated grades once this entire semester and has a lot of ridiculous assignments for homework, some including going to public places even though we're in the middle of a pandemic. Avoid this class at all costs.
I thought the workload was reasonable - certainly no more than in an in person class. Weekly checklists made it easy to keep up with what's due and we had some choice in the assignments completed. It's an online class.
Several assignments offered options/choices - visit a local planetarium, request images from free online telescopes, watch a movie, etc. There were always free options that could be completed from home. I spent about 2-3 hours per week on the course.
If you're looking to post to a discussion board a few times and study a review sheet the night before the test, this is not the course for you. If you're looking for an interesting course that is really flexible, this is it. It seemed to be a fair approximation to a face-to-face section.
Good class. Cool labs. Typical work load for a lab course.
Physics is really hard. Physics 2 is even harder than Physics 1. But Mark explains everything in very simple terms. I still had to work lots and lots of problems for practice and meet with Mark after class, but he was always willing to help.
Physics is tough and this was a hybrid online course, so it was really really tough. We met once per week in person for lab and once by Zoom. Mark uses simple language and is always happy to meet outside of class - by email, Zoom, in person, whatever.
Summer semester (8 weeks) goes really fast. I spent about 5 hours each week on assignments. Just keep up with the weekly checklist and don't wait until the last minute and you'll be fine.
This class was horrible. Granted, I took it over summer semester, but the amount of content is astounding. It is pretty much getting thrown to the wolves by reading chapters with no guidance on what exactly to study. Quizzes can be over 50 questions. NOTHING that had to be manually graded was graded until the final week. Good Luck.
Took this class online summer 2021. It ended yesterday. Mark reached out every week by email and invited questions. He repeatedly offered to meet individually by Zoom or on campus in person. In addition to the free text, dozens of videos and other resources were provided. Review quizzes prior to each test previewed test questions.
I'm taking the class now. So far so good. Time commitment is on par with my other classes (which are face-to-face). Just be sure to keep up with assignments. Pretty easy to do because of the many reminders.
The semester is about 2/3 over and no surprises. I'll likely finish up with a B or maybe an A. Science is not my best subject but there are a lot of videos to explain the harder stuff and Mark even created a video to explain a problem when I emailed a question. He has also met with me on campus.
This class has been utterly awful. There are 2 quizzes every week, and the labs he assigns super late take forever to finish, he asks very specific things for each lab that are difficult to do. On test weeks there are 2 extra review quizzes you HAVE to take, one of the review quizzes was 103 pages long! I can't physically turn in all of this!!!
Just finished up. Will end with a high B or maybe an A. Assignments are posted at the beginning. Weekly checklists and reminders help to know what's due. If you read the checklist each week and follow instructions on assignments it's easy to do well. Spent less time on this class than my in person class.
The worst class I have ever had. Going out in-between 2-6am to do labs is uncalled for. Having 145 question quizzes and only some of the review quizzes was on the test. Takes forever to grade and expects the most out of someone. Keep in mind when taking this class you will have to do very hard labs late at night even if its freezing outside.
This was an astronomy lab class and the outside observing labs were my favorite part. We had to check out a telescope (for free) and do 4 outside labs. If you don't want to do astronomy labs then this is not the course for you.
like others have said, easy to keep up with what's due each week so if you turn everything in on time and follow the instructions you'll be fine
This is an online astronomy lab science course. If you don't want to go outside at night and observe the sky - this is not the course for you. If you think posting a few times and memorizing a study guide should be worth an A or a B - this is not the course for you. Follow directions and turn everything in on time and its easy to earn an A or B.
Summer term crams a 15 week course into 8 weeks. Don't do it unless you are willing to work twice as hard and twice as fast. Given that, this course is easy to follow, clearly spelled out, and straightforward. No surprises. Do the work and earn a good grade.
Best part is that I could reach out for help, or work independently. No mandatory discussion posts but discussion boards were there (optional). I like to work alone and only ask questions if needed and this class let me do that. Lots of material but I spent about the same amount of time I would have sitting in lecture twice each week.
Just what others have said... Expect to spend some time with the course, but instructions are very clear. Complete the work on time and you'll earn an A or B. Professor is happy to answer questions.
1010 W1 online, this course is challenging, mainly because he expects students to spend 4-6 hrs of their time studying for his course every day. Flexibility matters to me, and this course isn't that. Workload heavy must have no life to complete this course. If you plan to register, don't run far away. Full-time job? Yup, you'll cry. (Adulting)
This is the most well organized course I have ever taken. Everything is spelled out and very clear. About to take the first test. I spend about 5 hours EACH WEEK on the course. The welcome videos and quick start guide explain that the in person course meets for 5 hours each week so the online version is about the same.
Mr. Pergrem is a great professor, but this class was very hard. His lectures are interesting most of the time. I would take him again for another class, maybe just not this one.
Everything was spelled out in the beginning. Expect to spend 3-5 hours each week working on class material. Everyone gets to drop one major test grade. Then an optional final exam was made available at the end of the semester. So you could drop or replace 2 low grades.
I can only speak from my experience in an online setting. He rarely responds to emails even when they are labeled as he requests. He waited until the last couple of days to submit grades that had been completed for weeks. His exams were hard and often had questions that were not in study quizzes/guides. Trust the reviews you are reading.
Not the toughest prof I've ever taken but certainly not an easy A. Expect to spend a few hours each week on the material. Easy to get behind so keep up. Study for tests but good practice quizzes are provided so be sure to use them. With most assignments just follow the instructions and you'll get and A or B.
He was aight, not the best at communication tbh he forgot to upload projects and still had them due it really made an inconvenience for me. I like the class and enjoyed what were were learning a lot tho.
If you take this professor online I HIGHLY suggest you don't. From taking him online he was extremely difficult, the work load was heavy and each quiz you had to get 100% in order to open the test. I think that is very unfair considering not everyone is good at quizzes or test. He's a protectionist and won't take anything under that. Just no.......
I'm currently taking this course and so far it has been one of the best organized online course I've ever had. All assignments are listed week by week, and reminder emails come out if deadlines are approaching and something isn't finished. I've always received replies to my emails quickly, and they are always courteous and polite.
As others have said, this is a really well designed course. Everything is easy to follow. If you expect to post once or twice a week and that's it, then this is NOT the course for you. Seems easy to do well if you do the assignments.
Although he is well organized with his criteria, he is awful at responding emails and on top of that each review quiz will be limited with a timer of 4 min. Also each of his test are 50+ questions.
Never take him online please or in general, don't do it. save yourself time and money.
Guess you love it or hate it, but I'm lovin the course. Just follow the instructions and turn everything in. Takes me less time than an in-person course would and I love the material. Got to go to a planetarium for an assignment.
Taking his class online is not the right move. If you like this kind of class I think this would be the class for you. If you're trying to take this class because it an "easy A" I would highly suggest taking a different course. Homework is HEAVY and test are over 50+ questions. I felt like everyday I was doing his class. I dont recommend this class
Online astronomy is *not* an easy A, but it *IS* a great course. Don't knock the course just because you were looking for an easy A. Everything is clear and it's not hard to do well. Just turn in assignments. I spend less time on this course than I do sitting in lectures. Prof is helpful.
Yes, not an easy A but a very good course. Professor is willing to help.
You check out a telescope from the library to use for labs. Was easier to use than I thought it would be. Plan on spending a few hours each week on the course.
not an easy A but reasonable he is happy to help and answer questions better than having to go into campus
Mostly quick to respond to questions. Helpful with extra info/explanations. I normally put in 3-4 hours each week. Overall good course.
Prof was helpful. Course was well organized, easy to follow. Fun using telescopes.
Webpage was easy to navigate. Everything was explained well. Weekly assignments and opportunities to replace low grades. Overall good course.
pergrem is a quirky professor. in "intro to universe", he wants people to get 100 on quizzes to even open up further content.( unlimited attempts allowed, my guess is a scare tactic). a telescope is needed to do the night projects, either from library or go buy one. the tests will use lockdown browser so i'm hoping we get a study guide. it's hard
Course was easy to follow and grading was clear. Each project describes how it will be graded. Just follow the instructions and you'll earn A's.
As expected. Spent about 4 hours per week on class an lab. Easy to keep up.
Weekly checklists make it easy to know what's due. Optional final exam can replace a bad test grade. Optional last project can replace a bad project grade. So plenty of ways to make up for a missed assignment or bad test.
Take him if you have to, but listen when I tell you that he does NOT answer emails or grade anything on time. The assignments were 30 quizzes, 2 tests (lockdown), 1 optional final, and 5 projects. The assignments were messy; he said there were 4 tests and 6 projects. Expect 5+ hours every week.
Probably spent 4 or 5 hours each week on this course. Easy to keep up. Options to replace low scores / bad grades. No complaints. Would take again.
4-5 hours per week seems about right. easy to keep up. clear instructions. opportunities to replace a couple of bad grades.
Well designed course. I liked that I could work on my own but prof was available if needed. And I liked that we had options for several assignments (projects).
Took this during the fall. Good course. Not easy but fair and easy to navigate and keep up. Would take again.
If you have a loaded class schedule already, do not take this class. He never answers emails in a timely manner and the online portion is very messy and hard to navigate. He does give a lot of resources if you need help. It was just impossible for me to manage on top of 3 other classes and a full time job.
Course was easy to navigate. Opportunities to choose assignments that were of interest. One of the best online courses I've taken.
Mark is honestly a great teacher and really does want you to learn about the sky. That being said, he grades very harshly and never responds to emails. He's incredibly particular and will take a lot of points off projects if things aren't done exactly to his expectations in regards to formatting, naming projects, etc.
