Teaches Philosophy. Grades really tough. No homework only quizzes and exams.
Excellent teacher...challenging, funny, and crazy at the same time!
has funny lectures about some wierd stuff, grades tough of papers and tests
Hard to follow, but passionate about his topics. Somewhat humorous.
hard to take notes from because he writes sloppy and really fast
Notes are very messy. Only exams and quizzes. Don't know what he wants.
Lectures are very entertaining, but you can't read a word he says.
Can u say ENERGY?! He'll keep you awake! Very fair and interesting
excellent prof, tests are fair but difficult - come prepared for them!!!!!
One of the best profs I've ever had - his intellect will help open your mind!
very energetic and interesting lectures, fair grader but messy notes
Nice, interesting guy...not so clear...you'll do fine if you come to class
Very passionate about philosophy. His notes are a mess though.
Great Professor...passionate about what he's doing, wants you to love philosophy
Excellent professor. He is a whirlwind of philisophical information.
Excellent teacher just ask he'll help
Hilarious! Watch his eyes. He teaches SO MUCH, but gives great examples & helps
Can you say Mad Scientist. Great prof, very interesting, can lecture very well
A riot during class. Pay attention, information goes out fast. Vivid
Very knowledgable on Philosophy, and a great speaker, but tests are graded harsh
Very funny prof. He is a good-hearted man who loves what he teachers.
very entertaining! good guy!
Very kind prof. Class hard, but he will always help
Tough class, but not his fault. ALWAYS will help, nicest guy at GV
Teaches the class very well and even offers extra credit. Very good prof to have
A VERY entertaining prof! Loves his material and students. He does a great job making a difficult subject material easier.
Brilliant guy. My favorite philosophy proff. took four classes with him, and wish I could do more! Pay attention, and keep an open mind.
The Unabomber beard owns me, even though his amusing facial expressions are no longer visible. He's Jerry Seinfeld in Woody Allen's body with the fashion sense of a 1984 geometry teacher. He's brilliant, and he just can't dumb it down for the masses.
Hard grader, but knows it and offers EC for homework. Lectures quickly could talk a bit slower.
By far the best prof I've ever had. I would definetly take him again!! This is a hard topic, but he made it fun.
He was an awesome, very funny professor. Take good notes though, tests are essay, but he's very helpful.
Fascinating lecturer, knows his stuff, and is into the material all the way. Not recommended for non-PHI majors as he assumes you have some background, and is a difficult grader, but excellent prof, recommended.
If he were half as critical on himself as he is grading assignments I think he would become a more sound professor.
Nice prof. His lectures are a little scattered and quite in depth. Hard grader but offers extra credit homework. I would recommend him but expect to take a lot of notes and very quickly (fast talker).
What a pro.
WOW!!!!!!!! Awesome! I wanted to make it to every class just to see what he was going to say next.
Hard professor, but very interesting. Come to every single class because you will rely heavily on the lecture notes you take. Study very hard for tests and try to do well. There is extra credit, but it doesn't amount much. Expect to learn!
Professor Pestana did a great job teaching this class. He made class so much fun to come to. He is a very funny and brilliant guy. I would strongly recommend him to anyone.
The content in this class is pretty heavy, but his enthusiasm make the lectures understandable. Willing to help outside of class and is good with email. I would take him again.
Avoid unless you do logic for fun in your spare time! He expects way too much for a 100-level class and his quizes and test are really hard.I am a straight A student and barley passed his class. Seems nice at first-and is funny but his expectations for a gen-ed class ruin is potential. Take only if you are phi/logic major!
I can honestly say the grades from his class ruined my g.p.a. People in philosophy classes don't seem to mind him, but I would avoid him like the plague for anything in the Honors College.
If you want my advice on how to do well in his class, then here it goes: BE A PHILOSOPHY MAJOR! I didn't know half of what he was talking about; though to be honest, he really did try to present the material. Lot's of class participation.
AWESOME! he really kept the whole class interested...and kept us laughing. he's HILARIOUS! and really intelligent, too. plus, i found the material very interesting. great class. i hope to take more classes with him.
An awesome prof who knows his stuff and teaches while at the same time entertaining the class. He has personality and his beady dodgy eyes are hilarious. He can grade tough if you don't know your stuff, he isn't afraid to hand out a D. His notes are in depth and we didn't get through all the material, but he is a great prof and a lot of fun.
What a good teacher and all around nice guy. REALLY cares about students, puts off tests until he thinks we're ready to take them.
Mark is da bomb!
He's a great teacher, orally expresses ideas very well, but his handwriting is not writing. Stick to listening, and you will be impressed and appreciative.
Pesatana knows what he is talking about-his enthusiasm for teaching and sharing his information about philosophy are contagous! This man clearly has a passion for his craft and although my philosophy part of my exam sucked, it's motivating me to do better this next semester when he heads the civ sequence! Recommended for any course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pestana is wonderful! He gives great examples and goes slowly to make sure everyone understands. He writes fantastic notes on the board during class and works hard to make sure everyone is keeping up. Also he has an awesome beard and likes to tell jokes, which is nice at 8:30 in the morning.
He is the best professor I have had at GVSU. He is organized, knows his material, very clear, uses examples to hammer things home, is very understanding, very helpful, is actually at his office hours & he has an awesome beard.
This is a hard class. If your not a phi major, I would suggest taking something else.
genius-listen to him
This class was extremely hard. You need to show up to each and every class if you want to have even the slightest idea of whats going on. The only grades are 4 major quizzes (100 PTS each) and 2 Exams. The professor does not take into account the fact that some students dont understand the subject, millions of notes. Beware.
He seems like a really nice guy who wants everyone to do well, and will help if needed. That said, he won't hand out an A just because he wants you to do well. Work hard, and you'll enjoy his teaching greatly!
This class was quite difficult, but if you work hard then it will be fine. I failed one quiz but did well or okay on others. Homework was only for EC, which was convenient and helpful, and not due until finals. I took it as my Math Gen Ed, but it's relation to maths is pretty abstract, a lot of it is related to english. Lectures were entertaining.
Great professor! At first, I thought he wasn't going to be any good, but I was surprised. He was extremely helpful, and if anyone in the class didn't understand a concept, he would go over it in a different way until everything was understood. My only complaint is that his writing on exams/homework he hands back is nearly illegible.
I love Professor Pestana! He's hilarious and his class is so easy going and fun. It's a 300 level class but all we do is write response papers for books that we read and we have a final project. The response papers are the take home exams. Great professor, I totally recommend him.
Professor Pestana was a very good teacher, and although his notes are potentially confusing, he will explain anything in simple terms and it makes a lot more sense. He loved using multiple synonyms for concepts we discussed in class, which was a little weird. Definitely recommended.
Professor Pestana was my favorite professor this semester, no doubt. The material was dry, and his handwriting was messy, but his lectures were pretty easy to comprehend. He always gave us really good examples and his dry sense of humor made the class entertaining. His exams only contained stuff from the lecture. His beard is pretty great, too.
For me at least, this class was extremely hard for a 103 class. He graded exams and after everytime he handed back, he says " the quiz scores were not to good" so he must be doing something wrong. I have heard he is an honors prof.. Very difficult to me. not recomended for hard learners like me
Extremely knowledgable, capable of summarizing 1500+ years of philosophy in under an hour. He rarely showed up on days he didn't have to teach, but when he did he would eat poptarts and snuggle into his huge beard and nap. Fair tests, but I still don't know how to write a paper for him. Overall pretty bro.
I had him for my 6-9 in Ethics. 6-9's can be rough, but it's even worse with him. He's an amazing prof but I wouldn't suggest taking a 6-9 with him. It's extremely difficult to read his hand writing and sometimes he can't even read it, so make sure you listen. He's open to helping you all the time. If you show him you're working hard he'll pass u
Pestana is hilarious and makes class interesting. But, he's super disorganized and you'll only be able to read the first two letters of every word he writes. Very knowledgeable and I learned more than I thought I would. Tests are essays. Pay attention and write some stuff down and you'll be golden. He's super passionate about philosophy too.
Professor Pestana knows so freakin' much. He's able to bring in references from ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary philosophy-- in addition to psychology and physics-- all while staying on topic and very informative. If you pay very close attention, you will get so much out of his class.
Professor Pestana is a really nice and funny man. However, this class is insanely hard. It is unclear what he wants on his 5 quizzes and those are the only grades the entire semester. Doesn't post anything on blackboard and if you skip class you missed a whole lecture because everyday he hand writes notes on the board. Nice man but had material.
If you're looking for easiness, he's not your guy. Class is tough, but if you come to class and pay attention you'll do fine on the quizzes. I found the midterm and final to be the easiest out of them all actually. Pretty vibrant lecturer, it's hard to not pay attention when he's teaching. Probably the funniest prof I've ever had too.
Pestana is an extremely wise man. He knows exactly what he's talking about. He's funny and makes lectures as interesting as he can. I had trouble in the beginning with the material and he made accommodations to make sure I'd succeed in the class. He genuinely cares about his students and their experience in his class. I highly recommend taking him
Pestana is probably my favorite professor. Nice guy, very understanding and lenient, doesn't screw you over on grading. Lectures were always interesting, engaging, and funny. He's passionate about what he teaches and it makes it genuinely fun. I looked forward to his class.
Professor Pestana was a really cool guy who is always willing to help his students. The class is all lectures and the notes can get a little crazy. There's three take home exams and a final paper. Attendance isn't mandatory but the more you show up the better. Philosophy isn't exactly easy for everyone but Professor Pestana makes it easier.
Professor Pestana is a very nice man and he tries to make class easy. All quizzes and tests were take home and you can always submit homework late. The class is somewhat difficult but he does a good job at mitigating the difficulty.
He's a really good professor! It becomes obvious very quickly that he's passionate about what he's teaching, and that automatically makes the class interesting. There's a couple papers, and the homework is to just read, but I never really did and passed without a problem.
It's no lie that the course material is down right confusing. However, Pestana is very passionate about what he does and tries to make the material understandable. He provides many examples and answers on how to solve problems. Quizzes are all take home and you can submit late work. But it's a class you don't really want to skip!
Class is never boring with Dr. Pestana, that's for sure. He goes off on tangents but it somehow always relates back to the subject matter. Exams and assignments were challenging but in a good way. You won't even want to skip class! I really enjoyed his class, the man is brilliant. Take a class with Dr. Pestana if you can.
Pestana is seriously great. I've had him for several classes and he never disappoints. His lectures are interesting and he never fails to throw in a few lame (yet hilarious) jokes. He is so lenient with grading and makes class a breeze. 100% recommend.
If you don't choose Pestana for PHI 102 you are making a huge mistake
Prof Pestana is great. Logic did not come easy to me, and I struggled in the course, but he takes your work ethic into account when he grades. Show up, ask for help, and he will remember that. Review the textbook, it helps a lot. Finding others to study with is also a good idea. Ask questions.
Don't let your advisor tell you that this is an easy substitute for a math class. THIS IS HARDDD. Very lecture heavy and Professor Pestana is really hard to follow at times, he also kind of talks slow but even then he's hard to follow because he's just everywhere and is kind of a tough grader. He also says BONK a lot and I love it.
Prof Pestana understands that logic is confusing and he always says it's a bunch of "Gobbly-gook", so he tries his best to break it down and explain it step by step which I find very helpful. There are 10 assignments that are just due by the end of sem, and 4 quizzes, 2 exams. This class is not easy, but if you pay attention you can do it.
Rly good guy, but the way he explains stuff is way more confusing than it needs to be. The content is difficult, but once you get it it really clicks. Take note of everything he says so u can refer back to it. Material is kinda dry and repetitive but the class is abt analyzing ways of thinking & Im a psych major so it was interesting to me at least
Professor Pestana is a great professor. If you attend classes and give even medium effort you will pass this class with ease. Professor Pestana takes a lot of time of each topic and gives lots of great examples. He also cares for all of his students. Often we would do homework and quizzes in class. He will take time to help any student.
Such a sweet professor! Literally all you have to do it get a good grade is take notes during lectures. Exams are take-home and he usually gives about a week to do them.
Wonderful professors. His lectures are required. If you don't attend you wont pass. But they are amazing. His lectures were the best part of my week. He knows a lot. And wants you to know too. I feel like I left this class with a new perspective. I recommend this professor to anyone. He goes above and beyond and is hilarious. Never a dull moment.
Heard a lot about this class and how it was really difficult. It wasn't that difficult but it was still pretty difficult. The course content is hard to understand, but you will get some topics and you won't get some either for a while. He does know that the content is difficult so he would often goes over homework in class and give out free points
He's great and super understanding, he helps alot and cares about his students.
I loved being in Professor Pestana's class, he is very sweet and tries to make the course fun for everyone even though it's usually just him making dad jokes. However, this course is not easy and he is a little tough on the grading- if you miss a class, it is hard to catch up and you probably will not know what is going on. He is a great guy though
Professor Pestana's eccentricity made his lectures engaging, and his willingness to accept late work at any point made the class much more achievable due to the lack of lost points for having lives outside of class. I am genuinely glad that I got to take logic, which is an anomaly of cosmic proportions, given that this class is a math credit.
Professor Pestana is a great logic professor. The lectures are easy to follow and he asks a lot of questions to make sure that the class understands the content. The homework assignments are difficult but can be turned in any time before the final. If you show up to class and take good lecture notes this class is actually very enjoyable.
three papers and a final research paper, not too bad but going to class helps a lot
Great prof and super passionate about philosophy. Grading is a lil rough, for human nature class its 3 essays worth 20% than a final essay worth 40%, which can easily tank your grade. That being said not much homework is nice.
Professor Pestana is the only reason I passed this class. The class is very difficult and he is aware of that. He will do everything possible to helps his students succeed. We went over the homework together multiple times in class and even did the same for one of the quizzes. Quizzes and exams are both take home.
I really enjoyed Professor Pestana. He is very helpful with hard material, he goes over some homework and quizzes in class if he sees that a lot of people are confused. He is very nice and cares about his students. Overall, Logic is hard for me but I loved having him as a professor.
Awesome and caring professor. The class is very tedious and some concepts can be boring and difficult but he made it manageable. GO TO CLASS! Some homework assignments and quizzes will be done in class together or he'll give full credit if you are in class. Homework assignments are easy if you pay attention to his lectures and read the chapters.
Dr. Pestana is a funny old guy who does his very best to explain concepts in layman's terms. The subject matter is full of flowery language but he does a great job of cutting through most of it. Just take good notes! You will probably have to buy all of the books used in the course, as they weren't available through GVSU SAVE.
Professor Pestana is an engaging and caring instructor. While the course material can be challenging, his interactive lectures and understanding grading style make it manageable. unstuckstudy proved a helpful study aid alongside the required textbook.
Prof Pestana is a very sweet old man. He tells jokes throughout the lectures and tries to simplify things. We do a lot of practice problems during class and sometimes do homework or quizzes together. All lectures are posted online and he is accessible if you need extra help. Midterm, final, quizzes, and homework are all take home and open note.
