This guy is sooo cool. Very down to earth guy. Grading isn't bad because he explains everything in class just fine. Give you things to read out of the book but you can still get an A without ever reading. Offers planty of extra credit and participation points
This guy is great! He makes the material really easy to understand, and he offers so much extra credit, its hard to do poorly i his class. Quizzes and Tests are straight-forward, and, as long as you've read the chapters, you'll ace the class. He's also a pretty funny guy, so take his class!
love him! favorite class and favorite teacher :)
Really interesting and clear. You will definitely learn a lot but he makes sure not to take all your time with pointless homework, tons of reading or extremely hard tests. He is a fair grader but is willing to compromise if you have a good point or can back up your claims. I really liked this class and I would highly recommend him as a professor.
Best teacher ever! Class is really interesting and engaging. He give extra credit like no other teacher. You can easily get an A in this class, as long as you participate and do some extra credit. He is awesome though. DEFINITELY TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
He is such a nice guy, and he really knows what he's talking about. He makes the material interesting and easy to understand. Tons of opportunity for extra credit.
Great professor, the material is interesting and he knows what he's talking about. The class is harder than the others say though. Extra credit available but B+ is the highest you can get with it, and the quizzes/tests can be hard. But take his class if you can, you'll learn alot.
teach me some philosophy! I heart Mark. Marry me?
Awesome guy. Great teacher. Probably the best professor in the philosophy department here. He's clear and doesn't ramble like a lot of philosophy professors have a tendency to do. With extra credit (which he loves), you're practically guaranteed at least a B+ if you put in enough work.
Best professor ever. Seriously, this guy knows exactly what is talking about. Extremely helpful and so entertaining. He's so cute too. I highly HIGHLY recommend taking any of his classes. Material would be hard if he didn't explain it so well, but his method makes it clear and easy!
Dr. Piper is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is so clear and understandable when he gives lectures. He uses youtube clips a lot and they're fun to watch. I highly reccommend taking him for a class. You're graded on participation but he gives lots of opportunities to get points (class discussions, blackboard, and office hours)
attendance is mandatory. quizzes are straight memorization (literally word for word) and can be difficult multiple choice, short answer, and true and false. the whole class is basically about whether or not God exists. I found it to be very pointless. no texting or chatting he's very old fashioned. Not too hard of class but I hated going to it
Dr. Piper is perhaps the best educator that I have ever had. He presents the material in a way that makes sense and is actually relevant. I highly recommend taking his class.
Dr. Piper is a great professor. He explains the material very well and there are not surprises on test and quizzes. He likes extra credit so if you put in the effort anyone could get at least a B. I'd take him for any class.
Looks like Michael C. Hall, aka Dexter. Also sounds like him. Great dude, always looking out for the students. Only teaches the relevant stuff which was greatly appreciated. I would recommend him without a doubt.
The class has the most pointless material ever and it is Extremely hard to stay awake. B is definitely easy. I had an A- before the final though But... the final is tough which is stupid because the class is useless.
He a really good professor. He is very direct about what will be on the quizzes and test. Even if you mess up on them there are plenty of extra credit opportunities. His lectures are interesting. He made me like philosophy for the first time. I even looked forward to the class.
Great teacher, and teaches what is needed. Is willing to help students. Text book reads more like a story then a normal text book. Tests are a little difficult(final especially) but he offers tons of extra credit. overall great guy
Very helpful to students. Material on test is only what you go over in class. For example if you read chapter 21, but only go over one argument from it, then only that argument will be on the quiz/test. The test are not too hard if you study, but study details. Take him if you get the chance, great guy and listens to students. Also has Extra cred.
I really like Dr. Piper and his lectures. He's really passionate and all he wants is for his students to succeed. The subject itself kind of sucks, but he makes it A LOT better.
LOVE HIM. Fantastic professor. He has a few seemingly strict regulations at first, but he really wants to see his students succeed. And it's not hard, because it's really interesting stuff! He uses a bunch of relevant teaching methods too. One of my favorite classes I've taken-- you're in for a treat if you've got him! Oh, and he's attractive ;)
For a 100 level class ridiculously hard. All the course does is try to prove a basis that god doesn't exist and is totally biased if you don't believe in philosophy. I mean WHO CARES about philosophy? I have straight A's as a chemistry major taking 400 level classes. Thanks to this pointless class I now don't have a 4.0! Thank you Dr. Piper!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE PIPER. He is a fantastic teacher who makes the class relevant and interesting. He is an awesome and approachable professor, and is always ready to help clarify any questions. Probably one of my favorite teachers ever. TAKE ANY AND ALL OF HIS CLASSES POSSIBLE. SERIOUSLY.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. I got at least a 90 on every test. And he's attractive!
A cutie, nice, clear, knowledgeable, helpful, passionate & genuine, but he's too Type A with grading. Sometimes acts like his way is the only RIGHT way (he's unaware of this). Pop quiz = GPA DEATH even if you do well in everything else. My grade was an inaccurate reflection of my knowledge & I understand Philo. You'll learn a lot but at a COST.
Dr. Piper makes this class! Very funny, sweet, helpful, and engaging guy. He'll definitely make you work but it's a challenge that'll be well worth your while. One of those professors that leaves an impression on you, so definitely take him if you can.
Class is entertaining, and the material is applicable to everyday life. It was a rewarding experience. Highly recommend the class
Pretty good teacher. He knows his stuff, and is very helpful. You can earn a TON of points if you just participate, and you can even turn in written statements for participation points if you don't want to speak up. Just read and flag (he'll go over it if you don't understand) and you'll be golden. He's pretty funny too.
Re: Re: 12/30: Not exactly a hard grader, just selective about the answers he wants, which can be hard to figure out b/c of question wording that is not clearly pointing to that end, so more than one answer is applicable <-- refers to "right way", not enough time to do EC w/ full course load, but that's life, could have dropped pop quiz altogether
Piper was an amazing teacher, and like others have said, definitely one that will stick with you. He's extremely easy to talk to, and passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. If you just study a little bit and keep up with the reading, you'll do fine.
Hands down, the best teacher I've ever had. I retained more information in that class than in any other. He is so influential and in his own world when he teaches that he drags you in and makes you want to learn. If you want to knock out a GENED course and be in love with the class too, take it! Plus, he's really hot. :]
Great professor. Easily the best in the Phil department. He's clear, concise, interesting, and makes you realize how philosophy is genuinely useful in your day-to-day life.
Dr. Piper is an amazing professor. He was definitely my favorite. He is young, passionate, and helpful. I have retained so much information from this class, unlike other classes I have taken at JMU. Be sure to participate in class, ask questions, and study the notes consistently. Good luck and have fun with it!
Dr. Piper is an amazing professor. He is passionate and makes a topic some might find unappealing, fascinating and relative. He really cares about his students and the course material. However, he expects a great deal from his students, possibly too much. His exams are incredibly hard and tricky, and your grade me be lower than you prob deserved.
By far the best teacher I've had this semester. I dreaded this class coming into it, but he really does a good job at making it interesting. He makes up the notes as he goes, which I really liked. He puts a lot of emphasis on talking in class and coming to office hours. Tests and quizzes are realllly tricky, but you'll catch on to his tricks!
Great teacher, extremely helpfully. Interesting class but definitely tough information to be tested on. Do extra credit assignments to boost your grade a half letter. He wants his students to succeed and understands the material is not easy. Even though you may not get the best grade, take this class!
This class is one of the most interesting classes I've taken thus far and Piper is an EXCELLENT teacher. There's a lot of discussion and even though the test are tricky, if you take notes you'll pass. If you like to learn, I recommend this class.
Dr. Piper is a great teacher. The class completely thrives on class discussions which he commands and manipulates in a way that makes even the most boring information seem important and applicable. Dr. Piper is extremely dedicated to making the class have an impression on you. The class changed the way I think about things. Favorite class at JMU.
Awesome class. Dr. Piper is a great teacher. He expects a decent amount from you but if you put in the work you'll do well and learn a lot of interesting stuff. He has high expectations for participation too which I think really helped me learn and stay focused
Piper was an AWESOME teacher. Really a captivating person to listen to. Class run on discussions, four cumulative quizzes and two tests. Difficult material, he's helpful but you have to actually put effort, time, and work in. Can't just slide by! Never boring though.
One of my favorite classes I've taken at JMU. Attendance is SUPER mandatory...like you miss one class and you can lose points. However, Dr. Piper is completely understanding to illness and outside activities. If you can make the effort and go to class, you'll learn quite a bit and think outside your comfort zone. Highly Recommended.
He is one of my best professors this semester, i look forward to going to every class. He explains everything really well and knows what he is doing. He is extremely helpful. He has small quizzes every 2 weeks and 2 exams. Its quite easy if you just be consistent and pay attention. TAKE HIM
He is great! Favorite class and favorite teacher! Class participation is huge, and that is my only complaint. Piper is very funny and all around a great teacher
This guy is great. Always gives extra examples if you don't understand a concept, willing to help, thorough. At times he speaks with too much detail, but it's not overwhelming and can easily be overlooked. Definitely knows what he's doing and is friendly. Understands that the material isn't always the most interesting. Highly recommended.
Amazing professor! He's extremely accommodating and so nice. Half of the classes were online which really helps you to learn the material. Definitely take him if you have the chance!
He was my favorite teacher of the semester! Never missed a class. It was a fun blended course where you go to class one day and the other take online. Take him if you get the chance because he will change your perspective on how you view philosophy because he is just that great of a teacher.
Dr. Piper is one of the most chill teachers I've ever had. The online section of the class was really the only homework, and it's really straight-forward. He explains the content in a clear, personable way. If you do what he says, you'll pass easily. MCP is the bomb diggity.
One of the best professors I've had, he is so chill and the amount of work for the class is really minimal. 4 quizzes, 2 exams, he is really good at explaining material and he is funny too. Loved that its a mixed course, where class is online and in class. Not much homework. Take this class!
I probably wouldn't take this class again. There's too much weight on participation and his tests have so many trick questions on them. The online section of the course was pretty boring and time consuming but he tried to make it interesting. He's very helpful through email and office hours and wants everyone to succeed
He is a great professor! At first it may seem intimating but don't drop it! The online part is super easy, and its mostly opinion. If you need help is will help you until you understand your question, seriously one of the best professors/ teachers I have ever had, take him if you can!
Favorite professor ever! Don't leave JMU without taking a class from him. You'll work hard but it's very rewarding. He's reasonable too.
Dr. Piper was amazing! By far one of the most helpful and insightful teachers I have had. The class is half online/half in-class which makes it convenient for your schedule. The tests can be tricky but there is not that much material. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!
Do not take this class. He gets everything that he talks about in class straight from the textbook and provides no extra information and yet it is still mandatory to show up to class. The entire class is him answering clarification questions from other students. He primarily grades participation. The actual material is not difficult.
Dr. Piper is a great guy, but this class wasn't what I expected. The material itself is easy, but his tests and quizzes are ridiculous. I studied quite a bit for them all, but his questions are designed to trick you. Participation is HUGE. If you're up for a challenge, take him. I thought it was too difficult for a Gen Ed. Struggled for a B.
This is my favorite teacher I've had at JMU!! He's extremely funny & intelligent, so although his class is absolutely mandatory to attend, I found myself actually looking forward to my 9 am's with him. He tells great stories and uses clips from the Colbert Report to reinforce concepts all the time. Not an easy A but it's worth it. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
I loved this class! Professor Piper is really interesting and easy going and her wants you to do well. I definitely recommend this class to anyone who needs to take critical thinking!!
He is very clear and willing to help and go over tests individually during office hours. Material is easy but the quizzes and tests are pretty difficult. He puts a huge emphasis on participation and always encourages questions. Put in a good effort and you should get a B.
Dr. Piper is great! Overall, the class is a bit boring, but his passion for the subject keeps you interested. The quizzes aren't hard as long as you pay attention in class, and there is nothing on the quiz that hasn't been reviewed in class. It is mandatory, but you're paying to come here, so you should probably go to class. Best GPHIL 120 teacher!
Overall I liked the class. The material is good, Piper really tries the open your mind up. The videos he shows in class are funny, just know that he is obsessed with precious language and every question could be a trick question and you'll do just fine. Also make sure you say something at least once a class.
Dr. Piper is great. I love his class because it is a lecture but he is extremely interactive and learns everyone in the class names by the second week. Tests are tricky because he is very precise on wording (like for definitions). But I studied about an hour-1 1/2 before the test and did good. TAKE PIPER.
Very attractive and charismatic. Makes us laugh in class while clearly explaining all concepts. You may cover two definitions total in 1 full class because he gives examples and its mandatory to participate by asking questions or giving examples. Up to a 1/2 letter grade of Extra credit available. Easy though quiz/tests Qs may be tricky. TAKE HIM!
Terrible for a gen ed. He is good at explaining concepts but every question he tries to trick you. This class should be easy, but Piper does everything he can to try and make trick questions. You cant miss a class, go to the bathroom, or use your phone. This is honestly the worst class ever just because of him. The material isnt even tough.
Dr. Piper was absolutely wonderful. He's very reasonable and fair about the grades. Just be aware to not miss a class. And go over the quizzes carefully because he does have trick questions. The class is mainly based on rhetoric, so it makes sense that he uses trick questions in the quizzes. He wants you to pay attention to rhetoric everywhere.
Dr. Piper is one of the greatest professors I've had at JMU. He likes participation and the class is small so it creates a good atmosphere. His lectures are great, you take a lot of notes but it's a really rewarding class. If you work hard, you'll get a lot out of it. His intelligence astounds me and I'm really glad I got to take his class
Dr. Piper's class has been my favorite so far here at JMU! He does try to trick you, but if you come to class and take notes you will do fine. Great class and you won't mind studying because he actually makes the material fun and entertaining :)
The material is so interesting and he's a very funny guy who likes to relate the material to your life, but it's too hard for a gened. If you're really interested in philosophy and you don't mind studying A LOT (2 tests, 6 quizzes- that's it), then take it.
He is a great teacher. Always happy to answer questions and really tries to get to know you even if it's a big class. He tends to try to be tricky on the quizzes and tests but as long as you read the questions slowly and carefully you should be fine. Plus he's really funny!
Piper is a good professor overall, he knows how to keep class interesting. However he is very strict when it comes to classroom policies, you get points deducted from your grade for not coming to class , cellphones, and not having your textbook with you. The material is easy but his tests and quizzes are hard and full of trick questions.
Dr. Piper is by far the BEST professor I had taken this semester. He's nice, hilarious, and makes the class fly by! Yes, his quizzes are a little tough, but you simply need to study the material and watch word choice. He goes above and beyond helping in class, office hours, and simply an email. I wouldn't recommend anyone else but him!
This teacher was great at giving lectures even though we only covered 6 chapters the whole semester. Most people enjoyed our class but his quizzes are extremely tough I could never tell what he wanted. I had my notes memorized and knew the material in the book and still got 68s. I would not recommend recommend taking this class at all.
He's a hard grader, but he makes the class so fun! Tests: 6 quizzes, a midterm, and final. You REALLY have to know your stuff on tests-there are trick questions galore. Take notes on what he says & what he puts on the board. Ask Q's, make examples, & try 2 memorize definitions (the last one REALLY helps) and you'll be fine. book needed 4 class only
Dr. Piper is an awesome professor! He makes the lectures worth going to and tries to make it interesting for everyone! He will try to trick you on his tests, but as long as you read the questions carefully and take notes on what he says in class, you'll do fine. If you have the chance, take him!
This class was incredible, but definitely tough. In the beginning it feels like you're never going to get the hang of his quizzes, but after the first few you get used to his technique and his tricks. The lectures were entertaining and funny, and the video clips helped keep you awake. The book wasn't too important, but lecture notes are crucial!
Dr. Piper was a great lecturer who always kept things interesting. I originally didn't have much interest in philosophy, but he changed that quickly. He's very friendly and got to know all of our names in a class of 120 students within the first few weeks. 6 quizzes, a midterm, and final, plus an extra credit project at the end of the semester.
Dr. Piper is a great teacher, his lectures are engaging&, despite his warning that the class would likely be boring, it's actually my favorite class! He knows his content (&goes beyond the book often), is humorous, &fair. One warning though, his quizzestests are ALL culmative and all based on very specific wording. Read tests carefully&slowly!
His syllabus makes him seem really mean and difficult, but he's very nice, clear, and helpful. He cares that you understand the material. Definitely would recommend.
I absolutely loved this class. This is probably my favorite gened taken at JMU so far. This is not an easy class by any means, but it makes you think and you come out of the class as a better student. Dr. Piper's lectures were entertaining and extremely clear. DEFINITELY TAKE HIM.
Dr. Piper is my favorite professor so far! He's so enthusiastic about the subject (knowing most students are taking it for a GenEd requirement). He is hilarious and keeps his lectures relevant. Overall there were only 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final (all multiple choice & TrueFalse). READ HIS QUIZZESTESTS CAREFULLY! I'd take him again!!
Taking this class for my B.A philosophy requirement, I did not expect to be graded this harshly. Unless you speak MULTIPLE times a class, you will still not receive a decent participation score. His tests were based too much on objective material. And advanced philosophical answers were expected. Also you cannot use the bathroom during class.
He is a very tough grader and his tests and quizzes are purposely tricky. If you want an A you'll have to probably during water into wine and be able to part the red sea. His class is definitely interesting but it isn't an easy class and there is homework.
This class was very interesting. Dr. Piper knows a lot about the subject and makes his lectures easy to follow and interesting. He really values specificity so study HIS notes very carefully, he bases his quizzes off what he says in class and the notes he writes down on the board.. So GO TO CLASS if you want to do well bc he also takes attendance
Took during Maymester after my freshman year for the philosophy requirement. I loved the class. He gave interesting and straightforward lectures. Some topics were over my head but he was always willing to help. Participation in class was important. We had papers due every day. Overall, a great guy and a great class. Take Philosophy through Film!
Piper's a cool guy! Interesting lectures and he's pretty funny so he makes it worth going! You get points off for missing class but he has a TON of extra credit opportunities so you can make any of that up and boost your grade too! His tests and quizzes are very specific to HIS notes and they can have trick questions. Not easy but would take again!
Dr. Piper is my favorite professor at JMU. He is by far the funniest professor that I have ever had. He provides lots of extra credit and is extremely relatable and understanding. Although I had trouble sometimes throughout the semester, it was still my favorite class to go to because of how interesting his lectures were. I'd have him again anytime
Love, love, love Dr. Piper! He is so funny and really laid back. His quizzes can get pretty tricky but he definitely has your best interest at heart and always keeps lectures fun! I highly recommend taking him, make sure to take good notes, participate (its a grade) and bring your textbook to class!
Absolutely loved Dr. Piper! I would totally recommend taking his class! He makes his lectures funny and interesting. There are only a few grades though (4 quizzes, midterm, participation, final). Definitely do the extra credit projects!
I loved Dr. Piper! He truly loves philosophy and really cares about his students! His lectures are really interesting and funny! The quizzes/ midterm and final are tricky but if you pay attention in lecture you will do great! He also gives a big extra credit project - DO IT!! He's amazing and if you have the opportunity, take him!!
Piper is awesome. You will havean outstanding time if you read his quizzes v carefully, ad don't use your phone. He won't tell you, but you will lose points. It's a silent killer
Dr. Piper is a great prof. He gives you the information you need to know for quizzes and his lectures remain interesting throughout the entire semester. You are guaranteed a giggle every class meeting. Participate, bring your book to class, take good notes and you'll do great in this class. Plus he's easy on the eyes, in a cute, nerdy way.
Everyone loves Piper. Lectures are inspiring and comedic, and he teaches you things in this class that you can apply to your everyday life. He responds very quickly to emails and somehow knows every one of his student's names. This is the kind of professor I came to college to be taught by. Take him if you can.
Dr. Piper is my favorite professor I've had so far. He's so nice and he really cares that you understand the material. The quizzes are tricky but once you get the hang of them it's not too bad. I REALLY recommend you take him.
Dr. Piper is my favorite professor. He really cares about students succeeding in his class. His tests and quizzes are a little difficult but he is always available to go over them with you so you understand his style more. PHIL 120 is my favorite class I have ever taken. I highly recommend taking his class!1
Dr. Piper emphasizes the importance of learning philosophy throughout his class and the later material really shows why. He is very expressive and entertains the class easily. He answers all the questions he can to make the material very clear. His tests are tricky; make sure to read the questions completely.
He is extremely passionate about what he teaches. He really wants everyone to participate so its a major factor in your grade. Also you can't skip class like ever especially since he takes attendance and gets to know his students names and faces of everyone in the class. 4 quizzes, midterm and final. Pretty easy but can be tricky wording
LOVE DR. PIPER!! MUST TAKE THIS CLASS! He is highly respected and I always entered and left the class with a full smile. Great class and very interesting and engaging for a gen ed. Beware: he takes phones, attendance and being late very seriously but it really didn't bother me and made me take the class more seriously. MUST TAKE
Piper is one of the nicest dudes you will ever meet. He is an incredibly smart guy and does a great job of staying neutral in the political realm. Four quizzes, a midterm, final, participation grade, and optional EC. Very manageable class and is very applicable to everyday life. Oh, make sure to bring up the fact that he used to be in a band.
Mr. Piper is a joy to have as as a teacher. He's funny, down to earth. However, the quizzes and tests are tricky, even when you know the content super well. The way he teaches and asks questions on tests are very "black and white", which, can make things easier and less complicated for some, however, a tendency to overthink isn't so hot here.
One of the best teacher's I've ever had. Super funny and makes learning enjoyable. He really wants you to succeed and will go above and beyond to help you in and out of the classroom. As long as you take notes and pay attention during class you are golden. Tests can trip you up but if you know the concepts then applying them is a breeze. MUST TAKE.
Dr. Piper is the best, he loves teaching philosophy & knows what he is talking about. There hasn't been one boring because he is so funny (don't take if you're easily offended by bad language). Your grade is based off 4 quizzes, a mid-term and final exam, but he only tests you on what is talked about in class, so go to class.
BEST PROF EVER!! Dr. Piper really knows his stuff and I honestly thought philosophy would be super boring. I was totally wrong and this was my favorite class this semester. Nothing will be on tests or quizzes that wasn't talked about in lecturhHe loves what he does and is so funny. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed him and his class.
Dr. Piper is definitely one of the best professors at JMU. He presents the material very clearly and makes it applicable to all of the students. Though the quizzes were not difficult, you still need to read everything carefully because just a few words can trip you up. He's super funny and always keeps the class engaged. I would take him again 100%
Piper is awesome! He's such a funny professor and makes class entertaining! His exams are straight to the point and if you take notes and study a little, you'll pass them with easy A's and B's! 10/10 would definitely take again! It's a good gen ed to take to fulfill cluster 1!
Dr. Piper really cares about his students and really wants you to pass. You have 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. All of the quizzes and exams are cumulative, but the content isn't challenging. As long as you take notes and pay attention in class, you will do well. By far one of the best professors out there.
Such a nice guy and his lectures are always so funny and enjoyable. The material is hard but he makes it understandable. He doesn't give tests only 4 quizzes and a final and no homework so its important to do well on them. If you participate regularly he'll bump your grade at the end of the semester. Overall really nice guy and solid gen ed class
Dr Piper was one of my favorite professors, he makes his lectures fun & entertaining & is very clear with notes. His tests can be a bit tricky but as long as you study the notes you should do well! I would definitely recommend taking him! also, the textbook is not necessary I never actually read it because its mostly used for in-class examples!
Best professor! His class was the biggest one I've had (180 people) and yet I felt more connected to him than any of my other professors - He really does care! He is so funny and super easy to pay attention to in class - NOT BORING AT ALL! Beware: Critical thinking is difficult to pick up on, but once you get the hang of it, you're set.
I had Dr. Piper for PHIL 120, and he is hands down my favorite professor at JMU. At first I didn't know what to expect but he is really understanding. The material isn't hard to understand, and he really wants all of his students to succeed. Participation matters but only to bump you up if you are close to a letter grade. I highly recommend him!!
I LOVE him. He is my favorite professor at JMU. He is so kind and passionate about philosophy. The class is very tricky though, it takes awhile to get used to. But go to office hours and ask questions, it really helps!! Please take him. You won't regret it!
Dr. Piper is by far one of the best professors Ive had! I hate lectures but I was never bored during his class because of all the humor he throws in. 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. Quizzes can be tricky at first until you get used to his question style. Absolutely take him if youre able to, such a nice guy!!!
Piper is an amazing professor! He is hilarious and makes every class absolute phenomenal. Make sure you show up to class, pay attention, and take good notes because he uses tricky wording in his quizzes and tests. He grades based on 4 quizzes, a midterm, and the final. Take him for PHIL120!!!
One of the greatest people I have ever met. In the course I had him for, we had 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. As long as you read the pages he assigns and take notes in lecture, you will get an easy A. He does everything he can to connect to his students on a personal level, and is funny and inspirational at the same time. Take his class!!!
HE IS MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR. TAKE HIM AND CHERISH EVERY WORD HE SAYS! HE IS FUNNY AND CARES THAT HIS STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL AND LECTURE IS AMAZING! I NEVER WANTED TO MISS A CLASS.
Mark Piper is my favorite professor at JMU. If you need an easy A and need to fulfill a gen ed requirement please take this class!!! The whole class is lecture based but he breaks it up with funny YouTube clips to make you understand and remember the material. You will need the textbook everyday in class so rent it from the bookstore.
I loved Dr. Piper! The subject wasn't the most interesting, but he made it interesting. He's honestly hilarious, which makes it really easy to pay attention in class. Very understanding, friendly, loves when you participate in discussions. Super helpful, makes sure everyone understands the material. Not very many grades, but he's an awesome guy
By far my favorite professor at JMU! He keeps his lectures fun and relevant. Dr. Piper truly cares and wants you to succeed. He even learns everyones names in lecture. Participate in class! It can help your grade at the end of the year. Take this class!!!
Dr. Piper is a great PHIL 120 professor, he is very clear on what to expect on the tests, and is very funny. I highly recommend.
Take Piper if you have the chance! He's hilarious and he makes the material interesting.
Participation really affects your grade. Get ready to take lots of notes during his lectures, they make up the bulk of study material. 4-5 tests/papers. He's funny and witty, very knowledgeable, makes class interesting, but this was honestly one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, especially since I'm not passionate about philosophy. Study HARD
Mark Piper is an amazing professor. The one part of the class I did not like was that the homework assignments we had were not graded in canvas, however if you did not do them your final grade is deducted, so do them. The same goes with attendance. Piper truly makes the class very interesting and really wants everyone to do well. TAKE HIM!!!
Professor Pipers lectures are like no other, even if you could care the slightest about Philosophy he makes it so fun and interesting to learn. His notes are exactly what he puts in his 4 quizzes and 2 exams. I feel like the questions on the quizzes are tricky sometimes but if you pay close attention and study its not that bad.
Piper was really good at making a boring subject interesting. He genuinely wants you to learn and succeed in his class. Exams and quizzes are not hard, but read questions carefully as he sometimes likes to trick you in the wording but it's not hard to spot. Class attendance is mandatory or you lose points. Overall, I would recommend taking him!
Professor Piper was amazing! He's so interesting to listen to and is always available for questions! The material when tested on isn't always the easiest to understand, but if you do the work and study, an A is definitely achievable. 4 mandatory discussion boards , 4 quizzes, midterm and final. You don't need to read the textbook to get an A.
Only grades are 4 quizzes, midterm, and final. Sounds great but they all weigh heavy. You get 5 points taken off from the course total if you miss class, 10 points if you're on your phone. Honestly don't take if you dont want a strict, extreme professor. Missed one class and my grade dropped from a B- to a C+. Did this to other students too
Mark Piper is probably one of the most caring and fair professors you can take. He tries to cater to every student's needs. For example, participation can only help you, and if you're shy there is an online forum for participation. He makes the quizzes/exams very fair and prepares you for each one. Also, he's a funny dude. Easy & interesting class
Dr. Piper truly loves what he teaches, and that comes across well very well in his lectures. As for the course material, there is not a lot of homework, and much of the material on tests is less memorization of terms or whatever but the application of the terms. So, if just memorization with no application is your thing, then this might be hard.
One of the funniest professors ever. Such a great gen ed class that's worth it! I can talk about things I learned from him for hours. Go to office hours they will help you! Participate! I wish I could take this class again.
Class is either very easy, or difficult and for me, it was difficult. I attended every class and paid a good deal of attention and also participated, but I still ended with a B-. The material is easy to understand but tests and quizzes are very wordy and can throw you of track.
Attendance is mandatory, he makes this clear in the beginning, and if you skip class your grade will suffer. Then again, there is no reason to skip his class. Every class is full of great discussions, and you really do grow as a student and person in his class. His exams are tricky, take your time on them. He really loves the class and it shows!
Mark Piper is by far my favorite professor. He has such a kind soul and cares about all his students. His class is fairly easy and you are graded by four quizzes, a midterm, and a final. Attendance is mandatory but no one minds because his lectures are always so funny. Take him if you can, he is amazing!
Professor Piper is my favorite teacher that I have had so far. He is hilarious and make the lecture interesting while always asking for class participation. The class is made up of online discussion board HW, 4 quizzes, a midterm and a final. All of its pretty easy and he cares a lot and really wants his students to succeed. take his class!
Professor Piper is one of my favorite professors. His lectures are hilarious and also engaging at the same time. Attendance is mandatory but the class is very worth it. Theres 4 quizzes and a midterm and a final and as long as you study you will do well on them as they arent hard. 10/10 class and would definitely recommend.
One of my favorite professors! Very funny and genuine, also shows that he cares a lot about the subject and his students. Tests /quizzes can be tricky but an A is definitely achievable. You don't need the textbook because his tests /quizzes are based on lecture notes, but they give good practice problems. Gives you a fence bump for participation!
Great professor, such a nice and caring guy, makes an effort to learn everyone's name and lectures are pretty interesting. Don't really need the textbook if you go to class. The quizzes and test and really specific though and can be hard
Your grade is based on 4 quizzes and 2 tests (midterm and final) but professor Piper is amazing! He keeps the class energized he is hilarious and knows what he is teaching! Class is mandatory any unexcused absences are 5 points off final grade so show up. He's a nice guy though and will really help you if you are struggling.
Professor Piper is incredibly aware of the fact that the course is a gen ed but ensures the material is accessible and understood by everyone. Incredibly passionate and makes the material engaging. Open to discussing philosophy outside of class for those that are interested. Honestly, it is difficult to compliment him enough. You will NOT regret it
This guy is INCREDIBLE! No class has changed my life as much as this one has (not even trying to be dramatic, it's just facts). He's so passionate about what he teaches and inspired me to study philosophy further. Be super careful on the quizzes and tests with wording. Super willing to help and very approachable. TAKE HIM!!!!
Prof Piper is a truly great human being! The class was funny and engaging and he is truly passionate about the subject and about philosophy in general. Even in a class of 111 students, he will know your name by the 2nd week and be so committed to each and every student as a human being that it is awe-inspiring. The material is not difficult.
Professor Piper is passionate about what he teaches and really cares for his students. In a class of 110, it was surprising to me that he learned everyone's names and faces. Class is interesting, and you don't really NEED the textbook if you just show up. He only gives 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. ALSO! Some of his wording is tricky on them.
He is the BEST! I loved having class with him and I am so sad that I didn't get a full semster with him. Take him if you can! His class is so interesting and makes participation so easy. He is probably one of my favorite professors I've had. He even made me consider getting a minor in Philosophy.
Dr. Piper truly cares about what he teaches and it shows. He is dedicated to teaching his students and wants them to succeed. It is so nice and understanding! If you have the chance, take him!!!
Dr. Piper was wonderful to have this semester even throughout the COVID-19 confusion. He is clear, thorough, and gives great examples when teaching. He wants his students to succeed and master the material. Quizzes were tricky but not much work outside of class.
Dr. Piper was one of the best professors that I've had. He was so funny; looked forward to going to every class. Accessible outside of class. Every thing is cumulative, and that can be annoying. He also would have us do pointless assignments that he didn't grade. Overall, so fun to go to his class 10/10 recommend.
Best professor at JMU 100% no question about it
He gives fun lectures. His quizzes on the other hand are not clear or easy. Most questions are T/F& are very vague. It is hard to do well on quizzes even if you attended every class. The examples he gives during class also do not align with the quizzes. There are no other grades other than quizzes and tests so its hard to bring your grade up.
Dr. Piper is a fantastic professor. He explains the class very well and does a good job of engaging his students. The first test is always the hardest zo study well.
Prof Piper is nice but a hard professor. The quizzes and tests wording are difficult as he uses a lot of T/F that are confusing.
Professor Piper is a great teacher, he loves what he does and tries to make class engaging and relevant! His quizzes and tests are hard and you have to learn his testing style, but he also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
The professor is a nice guy but his tests are EXTREMELY hard. The questions are very vague and confusing. Your grade is 4 tests and that is it so if you struggle with tests don't take.
Anyone who gives Dr. Piper a low rating is just upset that they don't attend his post-quiz meetings and go to his office hours. I did horribly on my first quiz but steadily improved to an A (97%) because 1. I ASKED HIM QUESTIONS IN CLASS and 2. did textbook practice. Philosophy isn't always cut and drytake your time on quizzes, 2 min/question.
TAKE HIM he is the nicest guy ever and really cares about his students. If you show up to class and pay attention you will succeed and he really wants you to! Tons of EC! BEST TEACHER SO FAR AT JMU!!!!
Professor Piper was the best teacher I have had. His lectures were fun and engaging. If you need help with material he is there to help. After each quiz he held a review session to go over it. There are 3 quizzes, a midterm, and a final which were very easy once you see his testing style. To do well on quizzes, you have to take good notes.
Dr. Piper radiates positivity and love for philosophy. His lectures are interesting for being a lecture. He gives 4 quizzes and they can be tricky at first, but once you get his style, they're not hard. He also gives a midterm and a final. I love him. He really cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. The kindest soul.
Dr. Piper is an amazing teacher and he really cares about his students, which is clearly reflected in the quality of his lectures. He is very accessible out of class, so don't be afraid to ask questions! Go to class, take good notes, and don't be afraid to make mistakes on the first quiz. You'll adapt to his testing style quickly.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Lectures are super entertaining despite everything being online and always makes sure to answer any questions you have on the spot. Once you see what his testing style is like the class gets even easier. Super interesting and an easy A as long as you put in the work! Highly recommend!
This dude is the man, funny and genuinely cares about his students. He also does a great job of making sure you learn the material in a way that doesn't feel burdensome. Piper is what every professor should strive to be like.
I have never felt strongly to rate a professor that I have had before, but Dr. Piper is the real deal. He is the kindest, most enthusiastic professor I have ever had in my three years at JMU. Dr. Piper was not originally supposed to be my instructor, but I am sure glad I did. He listens to his students and made an 8 am course something I enjoyed!
Professor Piper was a great professor. Had him for PHIL101 and all you need to do is go to the classes (or view the recordings like I did). Gives tons of extra credit if someone does have a bad grade. Very nice guy and teaches in a way that everyone can understand. Wish he taught all my classes instead of just one.
I loved Dr. Piper as a prof. He likes to drill in the material even though the semester long class could be talked about over coffee. He is very passionate about the lectures which I appreciated. The only bad thing is the way he words questions, very tricky wording and it will stump you no matter how well you know it. A great choice for the class!
Professor Piper is my favorite professor that I've ever had. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well. His quizzes are pretty tricky at first because of how specific they are, but once you get the hang of them the class is really fun. If you're taking this class PICK HIM!
Good at teaching the material, it'll stick w/ you. It was boring - the entire class could be taught in just a few classes. The attendance policy is pretty harsh - no unexcused absences unless you send an email ahead of time. However, it's a pretty easy grade if you go to every class and take notes.
He was very interesting and never had a boring lecture. It was easy to understand because he would relate it to everyday life so we could connect to the material. He also would help you prepare for exams and go over what you missed on quizzes. Great prof!!!
Prof. Piper asks questions about comments that he makes in passing on the tests and quizzes. The class is graded on the midterm, final, and four quizzes. This semester he added discussion boards that had specific requirements for length, but added nothing to our grades. If you missed class or a discussion board he was very quick to minus grades.
Prof Piper was my favorite professor at JMU. He can lecture like he is on a ted talk and makes the material engaging and relevant. Attendance is mandatory and the tests can be a bit specific, but as long as you take notes they'll be easy. I recommend anyone to take Dr. Piper!
He's so great! Took as a summer online course, definitely a solid choice. No exams, just writings and a final essay. Lectures were a little long but really helpful. He holds you to a high standard but won't penalize you for having a differing viewpoint. As long as you put effort in, you'll be fine. Definitely take if you can!
Mr. Piper made this class my favorite one so far at JMU. He makes the lectures relating, exciting, and interesting as he's passionate about what he speaks about. He is specific with quizzes and tests but always open to questions and discussions after class. Great professor, great person and overall great class.
Professor Piper is one of my favorite professors at JMU. Although attendance is mandatory, his lectures are worth attending and participation is rewarded. I recommend taking thorough notes, keeping up to date with readings, and know the EXACT definition of Philosophy. He genuinely wants his students to succeed, so don't hesitate to ask for help.
PHIL 440 with Professor Piper was highly enlightening. I am a philosophy major, yet, many of my classmates who had no prior philosophical experience still loved the class and managed to maintain good grades. We were assigned weekly readings followed by graded Reading Responses where you need to focus more on the analysis than the summary.
Prof. Piper is incredible. He is very empathetic and understanding. Would 100% take again, think very highly of him. He makes material very understandable especially if you haven't taken a Phil class prior.
hands down my favorite professor at jmu. he thoroughly explains the curriculum, lectures are entertaining, and he's just an overall funny and respectable man. i had this class at 9:35 am and went to every. single. lecture. it was a good time. the class was graded on 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final, and optional participation.
Professor Piper is an amazing man and a wonderful professor. If I could take every class with him I would. I adored his class, he taught with so much passion and enthusiasm. This class will test your memorization and comprehension skills, but if you are ready to put in the work you will be fine.
Professor Piper is a really great guy and professor. The class is graded on 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final, along with a few mandatory DB posts, but then he will give multiple extra credit DB posts and as long as you try you'll get full credit. His tests are very tricky, must study in detail, but he is super funny and kind and helpful.
The class can get pretty boring but Piper is a great prof- very passionate about the material. He goes over it all really thoroughly- if you actually go to class you shouldn't have trouble on the quizzes/exams. It's graded only by 4 multiple choices quizzes, the midterm, the final, and a few discussion boards, but he offers a lot of extra credit.
He is very kind and awesome Professor out there! However he only does 4 quizzes and 2 test as his assignments.
Professor Piper is a great professor. His lectures were very engaging and allowed you to understand the material well. This class is only graded by 4 quizzes, a midterm and a final, which seems like a lot, but it's not, and I didn't love that. Overall a pretty good class with a great professor, but all this assignments are pretty tricky.
Took this class over the summer and absolutely hated it. I genuinely went in with an open mind, but this class has been the most worthless class I have ever taken! It was online and there was a paper due every single class. The papers are literally you subjectively interpreting the stupidest works out there, and yet grades it as if it was a final.
One of the best professors at JMU. So caring and such an interesting subject. He makes sure everything is super clear. Only 4 quizzes (13 questions) and midterm+final (35 questions). Questions are straight out of the notes so just take good notes and you'll be okay. Also gives extra credit opportunities. He's great. Take him!!!
Professor Piper makes lectures so fun and makes the effort to get to know each and every one of his students. There are 4 quizzes and 2 tests but you won't be tricked or tested on anything he didn't discuss in class. He is by far my favorite professor at JMU.
Literally one of my best professors, would definitely take again for another class he teaches. Makes the lectures super funny and interesting. Graded by four quizzes, a midterm, final, and very few little assignments. Definitely take him if you can, really cares about his students.
If you are wanting to take PHIL 120, get Dr. Piper, he is amazing! In lecture he is super descriptive and you can tell he loves teaching. He expects you to only miss 3 classes which makes sense, I would not recommend missing any! There are no homework just tests and final, but his tests are all accumulative which hopefully makes the final easier.
Fantastic lectures that engage the whole class. Very relatable and kind guy. The class is really easy if you study. Not that much material is covered throughout the semester which was kinda sad since it was so enjoyable. 10/10 recommend, you can't go wrong with Piper.
Dr. Piper was one of my favorite professors from last semester. He went through content at a sufficient pace, makes sure everyone is caught up on notes before continuing with the lecture and goes through examples from the real world to make sure everyone understands the content. Definitely recommend.
Dr. Piper is great. He cares about students, has interesting and relevant lectures, and hammers in material in depth. The class is only graded by 4 quizzes and 2 exams and he words them in a way that you must read carefully, but there are never questions about topics not covered in class. He encourages questions and uses a lot of examples.
Piper has been my very favorite professor I've had at JMU. It's rare for me to be in a class that holds my attention the entire time, but Piper did. He's funny and engaging and cares about his students. Only graded by four quizzes, midterm, and final which are all cumulative, but pretty easy if you take notes and study. Take him!
Professor Piper is an excellent and funny professor and I highly recommend this course. Attendance is mandatory, there are 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final exam (all in person/scantron). There are extra credit opportunities. If you attend class, pay attention, ask questions, and take notes you will do well in this class I highly recommend.
Without a doubt one of the best professors I've ever had. The content itself isn't very engaging, but he ensures that his students understand everything. Class is graded by 4 quizzes, midterm, and final all of them cumulative. Study the notes you take in class and you'll do great. He genuinely cares about his students and wants to see them succeed.
Professor Piper is the best professor I have had at JMU. The material is not super interesting but he makes the class engaging and really want you to learn. There are only 4 quizzes and 2 exams but if you take good notes and study its easy to do well on them.
Professor Piper was best ever! Class and content were relatively easy and he reviews a lot to make sure everyone understands the topics. Attendance and participation is important. He grades on a couple discussion posts, 4 quizzes, and 2 exams. Overall, I loved the class and would recommend taking it as a Cluster 1 GenEd class!
I took Professor Piper for Phil101 online asynchronously over a 4 week period. There were about 4 short writings per week which were usually 250-300 word minimum but you have to go above that for full credit for 80% of your grade. The final is 20%. The video lectures were engaging and despite it being asynchronous I enjoyed him a lot as a teacher.
His lectures are fantastic and amusing. Piper made an effort to learn the name of every student in the 80-person lecture. His grading system is very clear. Can't recommend him enough.
super nice and conveys the material super well. definitely take this
Great dude. Takes time to learn everyone's names even in 100 person lectures. Class is easy, as long as you take good notes and actually show up. attendance is graded but there is extra credit. Very fun class and very engaging, Prof. Piper is a very entertaining lecturer, even with no electronics in class
Piper is one of my favorite teachers I've ever had. Literally the funniest man, makes content that could be boring so much more interesting. Only really graded by assessments but had opportunities for extra credit. Also, quizzes get easier as you learn the format because all are the same. Take him!!!!
I loved him! My favorite professor of the semester; makes lectures interesting. Make sure to take lots of notes and you'll do great. I recommend making flashcards whenever you learn something new because his tests are cumulative. Geniuelnly cares about his students. As long as you put effort in and show up to class you'll get a good grade.
Mr. Piper is the best professor I've ever had. He is super nice and caring and he always looks out for students and their grades above everything. The material is extremely clear and so are the quizzes, he works his hardest to make this class as straightforward as possible. He's also hilarious and the lectures are super interesting and engaging.
I highly recommend this professor for critical thinking. It was a super interesting class and he is an amazing professor. Class is mandatory because the quizzes and exams are only based on the notes taken from his lecture but I have never been bored.
I loved Prof. Piper! It's very easy to succeed in this class as long as you copy his notes. He's very funny and caring of his students. His quizzes/tests can be a little tricky so take your time on them. I recommend!!
I wasn't overly interested in philosophy before this class, but found much of this class very interesting and useful in everyday life. Take thorough notes and you will do well, extra credit writings that boost ur grade. Piper is an amazing, caring, and funny guy who wants you to succeed and knew everyone's name in our 100 person lecture.
AMAZING PROFESSOR!! TAKE HIM!!!!!! He genuinely makes it a goal to know each student by name which makes class more interactive. He also loves teaching this class and knows all about it so he makes sure to answer everyones questions. His teaching style makes a boring class somewhat interesting! He also gives extra credit opportunities!
His lectures were great as he goes slow, gives lots of details, and made them interesting. Only grades are 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. As long as you take notes and study a bit, they aren't that hard. He says the textbook is needed but he doesn't draw material from them for the tests so I never used mine. Definitely recommend for Phil 120.
He is a very nice professor, but I honestly thought the material was boring and common sense. It was an easy class and he made the lectures as entertaining as he could be (he was very vocal). The tests are memorization and application based and the questions are not always fair. The textbook is honestly not required.
I loved Dr. Piper! As someone who is not a Phil major, I wasn't sure that I'd like to take a class. like this, but I wanted to get it out of the way for the Gen ed. But Piper came in every day with a lot of energy and made sure to learn all of our names and really kept everyone engaged. We are not allowed to use our laptops but he made it easy .
Professor Piper is an absolutely phenomenal professor. He's so passionate about the course, clearly loves teaching a gen ed, and encourages all students to engage in the lectures. He was always willing to meet and answer any questions/clear anything up. He's awesome and I recommend him every time somebody mentions taking a philosophy class.
Really nice guy! The class was graded by 4 quizzes, the midterm, and the final. Attendance is taken, and the lectures are vital to the exams. But, he makes every lecture worthwhile to go to, and overall was a really awesome class that as long as you take notes (no computers) & show up to class, you should be good. Participation also matters a bit!
Best prof in the world. He's super good at public speaking, super engaging, super funny. He understands that sometimes people don't want to talk- he has a discussion board on canvas so you can get participation credit that way! He learn's everyone's name and is the most amazing ever. I'm also a way better critical thinker now. Best gen ed to take.
don't make the same mistake I did and buy the textbook, you never use it. No laptops allowed in class, and make sure you study for the quizzes. But the professor himself is an awesome guy, one of my favorite professors. I definitely recommend him.
Offers extra credit multiple times and makes an effort to learn every student's name. Doesn't allow phones and will take points off if he sees them repeatedly but that wasn't a problem with how much he made me care about the class/material. Very real dude that helped me decide on a minor and I've heard much more boring lecturers.
Wonderful profesor, would most definitely take again. Don't need the textbook but definitely go to class and pay attention.
This is by far my favorite professor at JMU! He truly cares for his students and taught in a way not just for a test but so we can take his lessons and be critical thinking for the rest of our lives. He created very entertaining lectures and gave us multiple examples through political arguments, advertisements, and would act some fallacies.
Prof. Piper is my favorite professor I've ever had. Not only are his lectures engaging tests are easy and very stylized. Great teacher, take this class!
He is a good professor. He PHIL101 the class very easy.
Professor Piper was an amazing professor! The content was interesting and Prof Piper is an engaging speaker. Lectures are typically done verbally, so not much PowerPoint or slides action. I would definitely take his class again if given the chance. He is hilarious and genuinely passionate about what he teaches. Highly recommend!
Piper was my all-time favorite professor at JMU. Although your grade is only based off of your tests he does a great job at preparing you for them. He does a great job explaining the complicated subject of philosophy while keeping it interesting at the same time. Show up for class and listen and you'll do great. if I could I would take it again!
Professor Piper's PHIL120 class is an engaging and rewarding experience. Attendance is mandatory, but the lectures are worthwhile - I found unstuckstudy ai helpful for study prep alongside the textbook. Expect quizzes and participation to factor into your grade, but the workload is manageable.
I loved Prof. Piper and the grades are based off of 2 exams and 4 quizzes. Very rarely any homework. Attendance matters but the class in itself is easy. Great teacher
No homework!! Your grade is just attendance and the quizzes. You get one free absence. Very chill if you're tardy. Super nice and learns everyone's names despite the large class size.
The best professor I have had. He genuinely makes a point to care about his students. Do the work, go to class, and you will be fine. His personality makes the class worth attending, and I cannot say enough good things about him. He makes sure everyone can get notes down and gives so many examples to help connect content to real-world examples.
Professor Piper has been one of the best teachers I have ever had in my academic career. Not only is he an amazing professor, but he takes the time to learn everyone's names in a class that has nearly 100 students. While his attendance is mandatory, his lectures are very engaging and he makes the somewhat boring content so much fun!
If you have the chance to take this professor, PLEASE DO!! Mark Piper is hands down the best professor/teacher that I have ever had. His passion for teaching makes the class super interesting and engaging. I actually looked forward to going to his class. I cannot express enough how much he cares about his students and it's an easy A if you study.
He is very passionate about Philosophy and makes the lectures very interesting. Only allowed to take hand written notes. The textbook is optional, but the notes for the class are just fine to succeed. Just memorize what he says to and you'll do fine.
love dr. piper! mandatory but it's worth it. he is very passionate about philosophy and makes sure you understand the material. if you participate enough he'll bump your grade up if you're on the fence of a letter grade. he doesn't allow computers/ipads so make sure you have a notebook. all exams are cumulative and in person.
Prof Piper was a good professor in terms of learning everyones names but his grading only goes off of 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final so if you fail one you're screwed. I knew all of the information on every test but he tricked you on every question!!!! I don't understand how he wanted us to learn if he was going to trick us.
Prof. Riley is genuinely with no exaggeration the best teacher I have had in my life. He made class enjoyable and genuinely wants you to learn. As long as you take decent notes, which he guides very well, frequently pausing his lecture and repeating definitions and concepts to let people write them, you will do well. Wish he taught everything!
Professor Piper genuinely cares about his students and wants to succeed. He doesn't allow phones/computers to take notes, so get ready to write. His tests are specific, but everything that's on the tests was discussed in class. Overall, he's a great professor.
Dr. Piper is a great professor and person! His class had very little homework and I thought lectures were easy to follow. Quiz questions sometimes try to trick you but study a little and read them more than once and you will be fine. He knew everyone's name in my 90+ person class and still remembered my name after I finished his class. Take him!!
Such a good professor. Knew everybody's name in a 90+ class and made lecture mostly interesting. 4 quizzes, a mid-term, and a final that are ALL cumulative. Kind of sucks but it's nice when you don't have to review that much for the final. Lots of extra credit opportunities, not an easy A unless you put the work in. Dudes chill and in a band.
I really enjoyed Prof. Pipers class!! He was a really good lecturer and he cared about all his students. He made an effort to learn every single persons name out 130 student class. You are only graded off of 4 quizzes a final and midterm though. Additionally some of the questions are meant to trick you up.
Biggest piece of advice - participate enough for the fence bump.
His lectures are entertaining and go by pretty fast. He only grades based on 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. The material is not difficult, but you will need to read quiz/test questions carefully because they may try to trick you, but overall not difficult. 100% recommend him
Took during the summer 4w1 (May to June). Great prof. Did not think I'd enjoy philosophy this much! No quizzes or tests, just writing 12 250+ paragraphs and one 5 paged final. Really cares about you and your work, even if it is online. Genuinely made me want to add PHIL as a minor. TAKE PROFESSOR PIPER!
If you're looking to take critical thinking - Phil 120, please take Professor Piper, he is one of if not the best professor I've ever come across, he cares so much about his students, even if you're looking to take other classes with him, I would certainly take him.
Only grades off of quizzes and exams. Gives you all the material you'll need to study. Very good lectures, the long class goes by quick when he teaches. He is very strict, however. Doesn't allow you to leave for bathroom, doesn't allow absences, etc.
Cares deeply about his students. Attendence is mandatory, his lectures are entertaining, and he does give extra credit. Will also give a fence bump if you participate a lot.
piper is really nice as a person, but his class gave me a really hard time...everything he does is cumulative and i feel like he throws kinda curveball questions to confuse you even tho he says he doesn't. he does offer extra credit to try and make points up, but overall i wouldn't really recommend him for class because of the exams/quizzes
i love him so much! he is hilarious and he really seems to love what he teaches. lectures every day. no devices so it's hand written notes which isn't ideal but not bad. only grades are the quizzes and mid term and final exams. he does give out a couple of extra credit opportunities. the wording of the questions on quizzes and exams is very tricky.
Prof. Piper is a very sweet guy; he doesn't allow you to have a laptop or phones out but I think it's beneficial. I also don't really find myself reaching for it anyway in his class. He teaches in a great way and makes it easy to remember things. 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. Not a super hard class but def requires studying. I loved him/ class
Easily my favorite professor of my first semester here. Absolutely hilarious and teaches everything so clearly. Only grades off of 4 quizzes, a midterm and a final but they're all pretty easy. Couldn't recommend him more!
my favorite professor i've had a jmu by far. he keeps lectures interesting. tests aren't too hard as long as you go to class and take good notes. also there are extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. he's just a really nice guy and i can't wait for another class with him.
