Boring lectures, uninspired presence, diffcult exams
boring lectures!!!
Full of himself, gets students to think he is the all mighty critic.
incredibly boring, incredibly pretentious
No Comments
If you do the reading, the tests are not hard...but he is in need of some energy
I enjoyed listening to his lectures and I learned a lot
No Comments
take lectue notes, watch the movies, check website, read chapters, no problem
I've never wanted to rip off my ears more...

he talks, but he rarely listens-very hard to communicate with, but he knows media
Sooooo boring. I wanted to die. I would rather eat pig brains.

Don't take the class at 8:00 am. Borrrrring!
Too much info for amount of ?s on tests!
He may know his stuff, but he definetley doesn't know how to teach it! BORING!
a pretentious ****...thinks his way is the only way..
he sucks...worst professor ever...fall asleep every time i'm in class
very boring. he doesn't know how to communicate what he knows to his students.
interesting guy... nothing spectacular though
knows his stuff, but too many years teaching = bitter rude guy.
3 classes with him. Why would I subject myself to that? Needed good sleep!
boooring, stay on his good side, notice all the films are about sex.. hm
Don't take this class if it's not for your major/minor. Very boring. Tests HARD.
All you do is watch movies. No explaination of anything. Tests are hard. Read

just want credit? Take somebody else. if this is your major however... take
The mans head is HUGE! If you can't keep yourself awake, DO NOT take this class.
Do not ever take him, worst professor in the university
Don't take this class at 8, too hard to stay awake.
I wouldn't have taught class the same way...occassionally annoying, but not hard
short, odd little man

A professor truly devoted to and interested in his field. Read the book, easy A.
confusing
TONS of reading! Goes by online study guides for 99% of test questions;
Way to hard to comprehend at 8am...I thought that 12:00 would be better..NO!
Not too hard but certainly not fun at all.

U want to talk to the driest man alive and get some sleep in, take this class!
Poindexter is a man who is full of himself. If you want to see a ego grow, take!
Good God, most boring class ever
Incredibly boring and conceited....likes to hear himself talk. Don't Take!
good prof, knows his stuff, does have quite the ega and no sense of humor, doesn't even laugh at Chaplin!
after taking this class twice- dont take. Althouhg by studying online study guides I got away without going half the time, when I did go it bored me to tears. Loves to hear himself talk!
Boring as hell. Impossible to get interested in his lecture. When are we going to learn about broadcasting? Class is in my major, but is a waste of my time.
Very, very boring. You'll sit in that class wondering how Egypt in the 1400's relates to the media. From the first day of class to the end his head triples in size.
Can't stand the man, can't stand the class. If you enjoy banging your head against the wall, do take. But take it from me, spare the misery if you possibly can.
The man is too smart for his own good but why does everyone on this campus hate this class? B/c it sux, that's why! Half of the material is pointless..ok all of it, and it is SO BORING!
Impossible to stay awake...Class was definently NOT what I expected. Goes by online study guides, but tough on essays
Boring class...but if you study, its easy. He sounds like Sean Connery mixed with Ben Stein. Bueller...Bueller...Bueller...
I actually didn't think he was all that bad. If you go to class, take notes, watch the movies, and read the book it's not hard at all.
BORING! Loves to tell you how smart he is, and where he has traveled to...avoid this one if you can...SAVE YOURSELF!
He is a good teacher and he can be very intersting. There are a lot more difficult teachers @CMU. He maybe long winded, but thats to weed out all the people that shouldn't be in broadcasting. If you aren't dedicated in that class than you'll never be.
I'd heard lots of bad stuff about this guy and this class, but I rather enjoy it and I think he's interesting and helpful, he tells you how to get and A and I m doing good.

Very boring class. Very liberal professor. How many videos do we need to watch about how hard it has been/is to be black in America? From a middle-aged white guy no less.
one of the easiest classes i have ever taken. as long as you his 3 pointers, there's NO way you can fail the class. the essay was graded rather easily also.
When you hear his name many BCA major cringe, but I have mixed feelings. I like his voice, it does sound like sean connery, and it also had the tendency to put me to sleep. Study for the test by reading the books, and make sure you follow his study guide
I heard so many bad things about this professor, but in actuality his class is so easy. As long as you take notes and go on the websites. Also, as long as you get the gist of the movies, you will be fine.
Second time taking him...he seems to let the VCR babysit the class...not impressed with teaching skills, but he goes out of his way to make sure that you understand what is required to do well...very opinionated, not for everyone, but very predictable.
Obviously extremely intelligent man and he'll let you know it the first day your in his class when he speaks 20 different languages to scare you. Class is hard if you make it hard...go to class is the key to passing this one and read the chapters.
Go to class and read. You have to read 5 chapters and the test will only be 18 questions. Too smart to teach. Lectures seem irrelevent. To all who have him in Fall 2003... my best advice is to wait til the spring and take with someone else..
The people who hate this guy are the ones who hate every prof. This class was so easy and I'm an Earth Science Major, not broadcasting!
I disliked the class from the first day but had to take it and ended up with a B in the class. Its hard to push aside his "I'm better than you attitude" be ready to read read read. To succeed read, go to the website, and go to class.
This man is a genius. He knows so much about film that it blew my mind. Anybody that prefers Dr. J to him is the kid who prefers Fast and Furious to Taxi Driver. If you are serious about film take his class.

People that find Poindexter's class easy must come by grade's easily. I did everything that he suggested you do, but when it came time for exams... It was so much information that my head was spinning!

He was a pretty hard teacher and did like to show that he thought he was smarter then everyone else. Very boring class for the most part. Got lucky and pulled off a halfway decent grade though.
I hate to say it because i agree that there is a large amount of reading and that the lectures can be boring, but i actually like the class. people that hate him are the ones who would rather complain that its his fault their not doing well.
I love Marky P. Of course you have to do a lot of reading for a small test, but he knows what he's talking about and as long as you go to class you'll be find. Plus his outbursts of excitedness are awesome, like his impression of Oscar Micheaux
He has a website go to it!!! If you go to the website and read and half pay attention in class you will get an A. He's smart but better than him being stupid!
He is an extremely smart guy, and knows what he is talking about. The reading in his class is terrible but i cannot stress it enough that you keep up with it! Also make sure to always check his website. The class is only hard if you get behind.
If you go to class, you'll pass. His questions come DIRECTLY from lecture and movies watched. Nice guy and will answer any questions you need. Not too easy, but good.
the papaer that is due at the end of the semester is graded so easy you'll love the guy. class is boring though unless you like to watch movies.
This course is fairly easy to excel in provided you attend class, check the website, and read. He makes it easy to do well, you just have to be willing to do the work and not slack off. I found him to be very accessable and great source of information.

He talks like he knows more than everybody in the room because he does. Go to his classes and pay attention, he is very animated in his lectures and really enjoys teaching the subject. Keep up with the website and textbook and you'll do fine.
Class wasnt that bad except for the final exam. He lectured for a half hour then gave us the exam. Exam was hard, it was over 30 chapters and all the notes and films from class all semester. Good Luck
Honestly, hardest class ever!! Go to every class, take notes on every movie, sound bite, lecture, read the book front and back, PRINT OUT THE WEB PAGE NOTES!! No curve, the class is 3 exams and a paper, dont take it if you dont have to!!
Nor only does this man have sex appeal, he actually knows a lot about what he is talking about. I strongly recommend him.
Ok this class can be difficult, if you don't go to class, and if you don't look at the web page. I didn't read the book, i just reviewed it before the test and i got a B. It was a fair class you got out of it what you put into it.
A little dry, but relatively simple. If you go to the website and do the reading (just skimming the chapters should suffice; there's a LOT), and listen to his lectures, you should be fine. Note taking is not required to do well in the class.
if you dont show up for class, you WILL NOT pass the tests. he does post's notes online but they are confusing if you didnt go to lecture. oh, and he WILL lecture for 2hours, with a nice 5 min break in between :/
Not going to lie, this class is hard. Go to class and do AS MUCH of the reading as you can. Its a butt-load, but you NEED to do it to pass. Pay attention in class and save the web notes. The two projects arent that hard.
Very hard teacher. I wanted to go into broadcasting until I took this class.
3 exams- 1st exam: study every thing (notes, web notes and the book) 2nd exam: web notes and lecture notes. Final: mostly on the lecture notes and the book. I studied for a couple of hours every night before the exam and still passed, just go to class.
So far, it has been my favorite class, but you HAVE to come to class! Pay attention to the movies, listen to what he says in class, and do REALLY good on your papers, and you will be fine. I got a B and didnt study at all, but i also had God with me :)
Poindexter what a name. Seriously, a very samrt man, he clearly has mastered everything that he is teaching. He is very clear about what he expects. He also shows a great passion for teaching. He is a great teacher. Just read and do well on your paper and you are golden.
Just ask him about his studies and travels abroad, and you'll be assaulted by a two-hour lecture explaining how smart he is. He's a shameless self promoter and loves to hear himself talk. The name Poindexter fits him to a "T."
way to broad and gives to much stuff to study for a 30 question test. its not even possible to study for.
Worst professor on campus. For those of you who plan on taking this class in the Spring take it with Patty Williamson.
He sounds like Sean Connery and is very interesting. His notes arent very helpful and he gives broad study guides for short tests but if you just know a little about things from the guide and what he expects youll be fine.
This class sucked. I dont recommend taking this class with poindexter. he wants you to know what to much material for a 15 point test. its ridculous. hes also really full of himself because he knows everything. If you dont believe if check out his website
I liked that class, but it's really hard. Poindexter is a very very smart man, but his topics are so broad that it's hard to make sure you cover it all for the exam. The part that sucks about this class is that there is only 5 grades. Good luck.
He's really very smart. He does sound like a bad version of Sean Connery. I liked the class because it was interesting but some of the stuff dragged and seemed irrelevant. There's so much to cover for the exams, it's a bit overwhelming at times. I wanted to go into broadcasting, but now I don't.
Goodteacher, but hes very self concusses dont laugh when hes lecturing!he makes you want to go into broadcasting he knows so much and knows from experience. Dont take bca 288 at the same time a lot of the same material and it gets boaring, but theres never openings in bca take what u can get!
Boring lectures!!!
Poindexter is a great guy. He's really smart, so he might come off egotistical, but hes not. Lectures are critical, do not skip. The books are mildly important, but defintly worth getting.
This class was the best Tues/Thurs naps I ever had. It was almost impossible to stay awake for any entire class period. If you are enrolled in BCA 288 or have taken it, there is no reason to ever come to this class or any excuse to do bad. This guy tells the worst jokes as well.
The name says it all: Poindexter. He's really into what he likes- very smart guy overall. True lectures are very boring, but it's an entry level BCA class so that's expected. Do the definitions he gives you on his website- they WILL be the majority of the tests.
Seems strange unsure of his teaching skills and dont know what his test will be like.
He was okay... i guess..interesting prof....knows what he's talkin bout.lectures before the test!! That Sucks! Study up for them...don't blow off!!!!
He is very knowledgeable.
P-dex is a great guy. Shows hip films (Bamboozled, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) and knows his stuff. Tests and papers are super easy if you don't blow the class off.
P-dex is the man. His lectures are long but really interesting. The papers are cake and the tests are a little tough. I didn't study a whole lot, and I got a B. He's a very fair grader. He shows some sweet fils too. Make sure you look at his site and go over all of it before each test!
This class is boring. I couldn't understand why he gets mad if you laugh in class. I think this class is a bit to structured. I also think that the test could have a more precise study guide. This is some real bull**** becuase you don't know what to study for the final. I wish he was informal.
The movies in this class are BORING except for the one with the fat boy and the piano Poindexter talks too much and the class seems like forever, the test are easy but he is scary when it comes to cheating and might seat you in alphabet order.the class has little to do with blacks movies
This class was difficult for me in more ways than one. The lectures were very long, hard to focus for a 2 hr lecture...and the tests were very hard to study for. The papers are fairly easy. Hes a good professor, but I think he should be teaching a higher level class. Study a lot for the final. He doesn't tell you what exacty is going to be on it.
Understand that if you are a freshman... he hates you! A very boring class. You watch a ton of movies, do a ton or reading, and the tests are only 10 or 15 questions. His ego is huge, and kind of sounds like Sean Connery. Very boring "unlessh it'sh about hish time in Moraco teach Freach Film" NOT GOOD!
Poindexter is a totally hot babe. Gotta luv him
very boring.. very hard..
I HATE THIS DAMN CLASS!! HE IS VERY INTO HIMSELF AND HIS LECTURES ARE MEANINGLESS. HE LIKES TO HEAR HIMSELF TALK AND THATS PROBABLY WHY SO MANY PEOPLE FAIL HIS CLASS AND HAVE TO RE-TAKE IT. FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR...STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY!
His classes are very boring and he has a very monotone voice that makes you fall asleep.
NOt good
Poindexter is alright. I think he is kinda full of himself and likes to hear himself talk a lot, but if you go to class, you should be okay. I received an A on the paper and I got A and B's on the tests, but I could see how it might be easy to fail, you really have to study, and you can't slack on the paper.
Boring as heck. Fell asleep most of the time because he just likes to hear himself talk. Still got an A in it because the paper is the main grade. Do that and you'll be set.
He is really tough on his tests, but if you actually attend class and listen (as boring as it may be sometimes) you'll do fine. Sometimes it is even interesting haha
Tough tests, tricks you often. No idea what is going to be on them. Even though he knows his stuff, he puts too much opinion into it, and rambles on constantly about how bad previous classes were... and don;t do this or that x 10 everyday. watched way too many movies and were expected to know exact dates for them all...
Good guy, willing to help or chat as long as it doesn't seem to him that you are wasting his time. Very dry personality, will spend the first 10 min. chatting with the BCA geeks in the front row. If you really go to the classes and read his website often, I would check it every , you'll do well enough. Exams are all over the place content wise.
Poindexter is a really nice guy!! The first day of class he tells you that in order to be successful you have to check the website...that is entirely true!! The website gives you all of the info that you need for the class. If you have any questions he will help as best as he can....he even helped me figure out my schedule for next semester!!
I was very excited for the class and anticipated what I thought I would learn in it. I was very disspointed, hes very boring and I did not think that watching movies was very relavent he showed no connection between the material he presented and what the class was supposed to be about. VERY strict with all assignments. Overall I def. didnt like him
Marky P knows everything about everything. The class is easy and the movies are interesting. Don't be one of those idiots who goes in thinking it's a class about Spike Lee- it's not. But you'll learn a lot, you'll hear about Madagascar, and you'll appreciate the P-Dex.
The course is OK. It isn't too hard, but he assigns a LOT of reading. He presents a lot of history in the class, which can be interesting. He always manages to slip several political opinions into each and every class, which I find very annoying.
i really liked this class. it was my first film class at CMU. Poindexter (what a name) is alright. He talks funny but he was very interesting and i learned alot in class. So far my favorite class at CMU.
GREAT PROFESSOR! I had him for bca210, everyone says hes the hardest professor out there, but if you go to class and do the reading (which he provides a reading focus sheet) you'll do fine, the only people who dont are those who are lazy...
THE MAN
i could not stand this man! i thought i'd be able to go to class everyday (almost) and learn, but i would fall asleep everytime. his voice is funny and annoying. VERY hard! and you REALLY have to work hard to get a decent grade in the class! i learned a lot, but i would never take a class with him again!
While Poindexter may be a bit difficult for 210, this class is his passion! This class only meets 2 weekends in the semester, but it's easy and relatively fun. Plus the trip to Paris on Spring break is awesome! Highly recommend, even if you didn't like 210 with Poindexter.
It is very hard to study for the test. Try to go to class everyday, if you do then it is not too hard to get a C or B
Very hard class....so much information....and he doesn't make it any easier on the students.
Pretty boring guy. I would suggest taking this class with a different prof. for various reasons.
Really hard, make sure to attend every class, study notes really hard. As previously stated, he takes this class way to seriously. There are only like 4 grades in the class, so make sure not to mess up on anything.
If you download the study guides on his website they will help focus your studying and your reading. Read the chapters and attend all of the classes. He takes the class very, very seriously. I do wish, however, that less content was taken from the texts and more content was taken directly from the class. It would have made the class better.
expect a very boring semester and hearing a lot about Madagascar. Make sure you do the reading. Most of the exams are from the reading.
The worst teacher I have ever had, the class isnt THAT hard, if you read everything very closely, the tests arent bad if you have read and can remember everything, he thinks bca is the most important class ever
Make sure you do the readings, the test questions come directly from them. And make sure you go to class, especially until all of the commentaries are over.
Of course he takes BCA seriously- it's a BCA class!!! He is very passionate about what he teaches and the media he shows in class is interesting. Paying attention/studying are necessary for a good grade- If you do that, you should easily get an A/B.
his lectures are soo boring. he will give like 10 chapters to read for a test, and make sure that you visit the website because he puts a lot of his test questions from those notes.
He really does know his stuff. Reading is very important for this class, and you need to keep up on it. Taking notes is also very important but its not too much. Overall I did learn a lot from him and this class. Just study everything you can for each test and you should be fine
His lectures can sometimes be a snooze but ive never met a more knowledable educator in my entire life. Some say to take lots of notes, I say listen carefully to the lectures instead and study the readings well. If you actually want to learn something in this class, you can learn a ton from Poindexter.
He knows his stuff, no doubt, but I would zone out because of boredom. I hated the class, personally. Study hard for the exams and try to pay attention. The papers and commentaries aren't hard...just be detailed and write well and you should do fine. He's tough too...don't try to turn anything in late!
This class is a very interesting class but he assigns SO MUCH READING for a 40 question exam. You have to study everything because you don't know what will be on the exams. Know Names and Dates for everything. But if you can do anything, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. Seriously. This class would be fun without expecting so much.
This class is definately a "weed out" class. Be prepared for 7 chapters out of 2 books for a 40 question exam. 3 Exams (including Final). Commentaries every once in a while, better go to class. If you read, go to class, and semi-pay attention you'll do fine. Class bores you to tears though. Toward the end of the semester, you'll want out.
Plan to get a low grade the first time you take this class because class averages are very low. It's not a bad class. Just hard.
One of the best professors I've come across at Central. The most well-informed of them all. He really knows what he's talking about. Tests are easy if you read the chapters assigned and go to class most of the time. Commentaries are easy also. Overall, great class/teacher.
This is a large lecture class where the prof tries to weed out about half the class. EXAMS ARE ROUGH. Exams are based off Blackboard notes, class discussions, and the READING. If you want to do well in this class, DO THE READING, and start it early! The prof is easy to fall asleep to (monotone), but he is very knowledgeable of the subject.
If there's an option involved DO NOT take him! It's a two hour class and he talks the whole time! It's boring! He gives you 20 minutes at the end of class to take the exam and then rushes you! It a "weed out" class for sure! I read the book, notes and went to every class and was still lost when I took the exam. If your bad at tests don't take him!
I know an honor student who cheated in his class which says a lot about how tough the class is.
The hardest teacher I've had so far. You LIVE the book, he rants on and on for 2 hours in class, then you have to go read his self made notes on Blackboard. The class intself was a letdown for me because I expected a Broadcasting class and I felt more like I was in a European History class. Dont take this class with him if you can help it.
He knows what he's talking about and he's a nice guy but the class is so boring. A 2 hour lecture of just him talking. There is a ton of reading and it's equally boring. The exams are hard and they make your grade.
Let me say this: I was so scared going into his class after the first day. It is true that it is alot of work, reading that is MANDATORY. basically, do the reading, show up to class and semi-pay attention (I fell asleep or almost a few times and got an A in the class), as well as read the blackboard notes you will pass easily.
He is the reason I am no longer a broadcast major. I had to get a 42/60 on my final to even pass the class and lucky for me I got a 45. AVOID HIM if you can!
His class is fairly easy. Didn't read either of the two books and came out with nearly 100%. We watched some pretty good movies in that class. Poindexter is a good communicator and very passionate about his subject of study. I recommend him if you are committed to the subject. If you're just taking this class as an elective, you will have a rough t
Really hard class. You have to read the books and the questions on the test are little things. Very hard class, prob have to take this class again. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
A LOT of studying for only a few questions on each exam. Only grades are exams and an essay, so study hard. Don't bother reading the whole chapters, just wait till he posts the terms online and then look for them and type up notes for each term. Did this and got an A. Don't forget the online notes, he likes to sneak questions from them onto exams.
Go to class and take good notes. It helps to review your notes as the semester goes on. There is no other prof for this course, so you have to take it with him. Just make the best of it and get on his good side. It helps to raise your hand and participate in class if he has a question. The essay is worth a lot of points and it's an easy grade saver
Professor Poindexter took full advantage of the extra credit that is tagged on to this course. He had no problem piling the reading on, and then expecting you to know direct quotes from the textbook for his exams. His syllabus mentioned in class work, but there wasn't any. The only grades you get are exams and one essay. Go with Sutterfield.
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, and also my favorite class this semester. Poindexter is very intelligent and a great teacher. Yes it's hard, but he gives you a ton of study material and is very helpful when contacted for help. You have to read a lot and dedicate a lot of time but its worth it.
Horrible professor. You learn next to nothing in class, but exams are pretty easy as long as you memorize the terms he sends out throughout the course. Only 7 people out of 130 in my class got an A- or better. In short, he's a know it all who talks about things unrelated to class on a consistent basis. Avoid if possible.
Whoever says that Poindexter is a terrible professor just didn't put the necessary time into his class. It is hard, yes, but it's supposed to be the BCA course that "weeds out" the good from the bad. If you study every detail of the notes and memorize his lists of terms, you will do fine. Don't be afraid of him just because he's thorough.
Dr Poindexter is difficult but very fair. In order to have a chance of even passing this class you must attend EVERY CLASS and READ THE BOOKS. But if you do both, and invest adequate time into your paper, you'll be just fine.
BCA 210 is a known weeder class. Poindexter does his job. I learned a lot of info I might not use again, but I had to work my butt off. Those who say he's horrible were just lazy. This class supposed to weed out the slackers from the BCA program! Follow his advice and work hard. You'll do fine.
His class made me want to dig up and hole and bury my self in it. This guy is so boring, pointless, and makes it impossible to pay attention in his class. Take the other guy, youre welcome. Now I am going to go dig that hole!
The class isn't actually hard, it just requires you to actually be a good student which people aren't use to. Read the books and make as many classes as you can (I missed 3 and still got a B) The exams progressively get harder, so read the progressive notes and text books and youll be solid
Poindexter is a cool guy! He's definately not a walk in the park, but if you pay attention, come to every class, read the progressive notes, book, and lecture notes you will pass! Don't study the night before, it won't work. Do the extra credit, it will help you. Pray, you'll need it. He knows what he's talking about, listen to him.
If you go to class and listen to the lectures & read the books you will get an A! The class was interesting the books are interesting and he was passionate about the subject. My favorite class and professor.
You *must* attend class in order to succeed in this class. Those who failed or did not do well in it did not do what was expected of them. He is a great professor, knows his stuff. Read the chapters, the progressives, and you'll be good for the exams! He can be a little dull, but he's very passionate about the material he presents. Good luck!
Ugh. This class was horrible and I usually can stand classes. I have learned and taken a lot from this class, so it is beneficial, But it will put a metal load on your mind every. Week. I did not read the books fully, did the study guides, and passed the class. I'd try the other professor before this one again. Good luck and do the study guides
Prof. Poindexter is an excellent professor. He is very knowledgeable and gives detailed notes. If you come to class and study your notes, you WILL do well. He does everything he can to prepare you for exams. His lectures can quite interesting and you watch good movies. He does check attendance, and will mark you down if you miss more than 3 classes.
Great Prof, wonderful person. I highly recommend taking his class, he is extremely intelligent and if you pay attention and go to class you will learn a LOT.
Mark Poindexter is a university teacher. Do the reading. Show up to class. Take notes. He is a very intelligent and experienced individual, and I feel privileged to have taken a class with him. His knowledge is vast and his lectures might challenge what you think you know. But tests and assignments are fair and incorporate readings and lecture.
NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! he is the most boring professor I have ever had in my life. 12 my class dropped because of how unhelpful and horrible he and his tests are. He makes study guides and nothing on the study guides are on the test. This test could be a easy class and interesting, but because of his lack of teaching it was awful.
I took this class the first semester of my freshman year. As you can imagine, I was nervous about the difficulty of a 200-level class. Poindexter gives clear-cut and amazing lectures. He knows exactly what he's talking about and is engaging. He's always willing to help during office hours. Exams are easy. Participation is required for points.
He is so passionate about what he is teaching and he is really nice. He has some cool stories if you actually listen. The midterm was easy if you study and you have daily notecards to fill out! He also offers extra credit. The topic is really boring but he is a great guy and makes it more interesting.
This class is suppose to weed out the broadcasting kids but I thought it was pretty easy. As long as you attend class everyday and look over notes you should get an easy A. Professor Poindexters lectures seem long but you can learn a lot from the course.
Class can be kinda boring at times but isn't too terrible. He's very knowledgable and if you ask for help, he will help you! You shouldn't skip, because you have a little notecard assignment to do every day. He definitely opens up your perspective on the media and teaches you quite a bit!
Honestly this class was pretty awful. The lectures are long when he does lecture, and when he doesn't lecture, we watched movies that were completely irrelevant to what we were being tested on. Other than the 4 point note cards that we had to turn in every day, I could have done the exact same in the class without going to a single lecture.
Honestly hated this class, before tests we would watch a movie for an hour and a half then do the test he would ramble on about stuff off topic then put on the test whatever he rambled on as (mentioned in class) on the test when tests are from that day back to the first day, he doest give you a lot of time to take notes either.
I took this class as a requirement; however, there is another teacher who teaches this and apparently she is the bomb. We had to do two group projects that were most of our grade with about 9 people. This made it very hard to meet up with people and in my group there were several people who did not do any work. If you won't pass if you don't go.
One of the most dry boring classes I have ever taken at CMU. Watch pointless movies that don't help you learn the material at all. When he does lecture it's long and drawn out, and he goes off on tangents A LOT. Tests are super hard. He really does love the material though, and is a nice guy.
You have to show up for class participation which is writing on a note card. Hes boring but if you take good notes you will pass the midterm and final.
I'm honestly still not sure what this class was about. Very unclear on what was going on the entire semester. notecards everyday so you need to go to class. two group projects you need to do. offers make up assignments and extra credit. easy to pass but waste of time
If you don't attend class, you will not pass. This professor gives 6 point notecards each and they are not easy questions- you definitely have to pay attention in class or you will not receive a good grade on the notecard and that's the most important part aside from 2 group projects that are also horrible and is 13+ people in each group.. Bad idea
Take 210 with Maggie Mayes if possible. Content of class is out of date, feels more like a history class.
Don't have him if you can avoid it. Taught more like a history class and unclear what the main objective is. He's enthusiastic about the class but comes off as pretentious and showing off his own achievements in class. I enjoyed what was taught just not how he taught it. The 2 group projects are graded hard and theres a 6 point note card everyday.
DO NOT TAKE 210 WITH THIS MAN. RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN. GOOD LUCK
I took him for BCA210 as a freshman my first semester. There are 2 big group projects (which were fine) but he doesn't give you any exams over the entire semester. THE FINAL EXAM IS WORTH 45% OF YOUR FINAL GRADE! Most A's in the class will change to C's or worse because of it. Choose a different professor if possible.
Poindexter is interesting. His class was meaningful at some points and at others the class really dragged. He's a very qualified professor, however his material sometimes appeared to be more about his own work/experiences. He's very passionate about what he teaches, but I would try to take this class with a different professor.
Lecture's that you can't miss and will put you to sleep. You will have two group presentations and the final exam is close to half of your grade. If you do well with note taking and lectures take him. If not then don't get anywhere near this man.
Loved his lectures even if he gets off topic once in a while. Has like-daily grade cards so dont plan on missing class. Really nice guy & I thought he was funny & interesting.
He teaches like a history lecture. There are notecards at the end of each class every day, which is the majority of your grade. There are 2 essays, but they are pretty easy, just select a chapter and follow the guidelines. He does offer extra credit & it is a discussion class for an hour but we usually get out early.
If you skip you wont pass. Period.
If you don't plan on coming to class, then don't waste your money by taking this class. He's a boring guy and it was painful to attend but somehow I got the highest grade in his whole lecture class and wrote me a stunning recommendation letter for a scholarship.
I only ever heard bad things about Poindexter but he is not bad at all. If you show up everyday you'll pass. You fill out a notecard everyday which is where a majority of points come from so if you skip you lose 10 points for that day. Only downside is he goes super quick with his slides during lecture & gives a very broad study guide for the final
Absolutely no tests except the final. There are 2 papers which are super easy to get full credit on as long as you read the book for each. Other than that each class has a short note card you fill out and as long as you were awake, that'll be no problem.
Nice guy, but his lectures are very long and boring. I fell asleep often. He has quizzes at the end of each class which count as your attendance so if you like to skip class a lot, I wouldnt suggest this for you.
If you don't plan on falling asleep every lecture, RUN! Super nice guy but extremely boring. 2 hour lectures of either talking or watching super old, boring films. We turn in note cards after every lecture worth 10 points, so if you plan on skipping you will fail. The note cards is basically your entire grade excluding the 2 papers that he assigns.
he will put you to sleep but you cannot skip because he gives up to 10 points daily on a little paragraph you write at end of class. overall not to hard and I even slept like everyday and still got my points. 2 essays out of class, also not too bad
The absolute most boring prof ever. Expect naps. Every. Day. Nice and sometimes funny though, not difficult at all.
You can tell that Dr. Poindexter is really passionate about mass media. However, this is basically a history class and he lectures on and on until you fall asleep. No need to take notes, it's an easy A and he makes progressive notes for you in Bb. DON'T SKIP CLASS! He has notecards and if you miss class it's 11 points off each card you miss.
Poindexter is one of my favorite professors at CMU. Hes really nice, and tries to relate to the students. Hes retiring after next semester though so take him while you can! The majority of your grade comes from the notecards that are done every day in class, so if you skip.. good luck. The exam was easy, just pay attention and youre sure to pass
Prof is absolute genius. This class perked my interest in multiple subjects due to the nature of his lectures. Hard work but worth the effort.
