Great teacher!! Extremely helpful and nice and really cares a lot about his students doing well and improving their reading and writing skills. He gets really excited when he talks about the material and it makes you want to be your best. I highly recommend Dr. Rankin - there should be more teachers like him.
Dr. Rankin is the most thorough teacher I've ever had. He sends multiple emails a day w/thoughts and info. You can rewrite papers for better grades. He knows his Shakespeare better than Will himself! He's pretty much a genius, but knows how to teach it on any level. Be ready to work, but appreciate him as a very useful teacher who does his part.
Professor Rankin is so great! He's such a nice man and so passionate about the subject he teaches. Really cares about his students. Class consists of readings, discussions and papers. Tough grader on papers but he lets you make revisions to improve your grade. I really enjoyed his class.
He is one of the most helpful professors I have had here at JMU. He's very approachable and will clarify/answer any questions or doubts you may have. The class style is straight up lecture and discussion and he is very open and encouraging to any thoughts and opinions. He lets you revise all your papers for better grades :)
Unlike most JMU professors, Dr. Rankin puts the students first. He is always willing to help. My only critique is that class discussion is often geared completely towards his interests, but he is incredibly knowledgeable and well organized. His grading is fair and very helpful. I highly recommend him for any serious students.
Excellent professor. I've had several classes with him - it's his enthusiasm for the subject matter that keeps me coming back. He truly cares for his students, too. There need to be more teachers like him.
Dr. Rankin is awesome. He is incredibly smart and knows what he is doing. Some of the assignments are hard, but he is always willing to meet with you, help, or negotiate a grade. I'd recommend this class.
Dr. Rankin is an amazing teacher. He genuinely cares about your grade and your ability to learn the material. He is extremely hard but no one would learn this material without a tough teacher. Definitely recommend him if you are willing to put in the time!
This is by far, the hardest gen-ed i have taken so far. I'm an english major and im barely keeping up. The reading isn't that bad but he expects A LOT from your papers, cool guy though
he's a good teacher but sometimes he can be alittle difficult to understand. But he is always willing to talk to you afterwards during his office hours. Its really hard for a gen ed class but the books were interesting. He expects alot out of the papers so don't worry if you don't do well on the first one, you can redo them for a higher grade
Fantastic teacher, really invested in his students education. He isn't interested in whether or not students pass, but whether or not they learn. His classes are difficult, but he always has a rewrite option after he gives feedback. Go to his office hours. He will walk you through you assignments to help you do the best you possibly can
I have mixed feelings about Dr. Rankin. It is true that he cares about his students, and his class is rigorous and refreshingly challenging. However, I do not think he is the best professor to teach this particular class (Teaching Shakespeare). I always seemed to leave his class feeling depressed or hopeless about my future career.
Do not take his class! Hardest class I've ever taken. Can't miss class or you can fail a test. Only 5 grades all semester and they each count equally. If you fail one, it's impossible to get your grade up. Lectures are boring and way too detail oriented.
Dude is the worst. I didn't care for him at all. English has always been my best/favorite subject and he made me hate it. cannot stress enough how useless he is. i feel cheated.
Don't take his class if you're looking for an easy A, but if you have any interest at all in english literature, this is the class to take. His lectures are insightful and very clear, and he's very up front with what he expects from his students. He's also very helpful in office hours. If you do the readings and show up to class you will do fine.
He's clearly interested in what he's teaching and dedicated to helping his students learn. However, the class is very difficult; and you really have to work at it to get an A. If you want to improve your English, this is the class to take
Definitely not an easy class, but it's not impossible. I barely used the book, and I got a decent enough grade. All 5 assignments count the same, and if you fail one it's kind of easy to bring your grade back up. A challenge but at least he cares about what he's teaching.
This class was not what I expected. I expected "Shakespeare's Tragedies and Romances" to be about the plays, but our class discussions focused on the plays textual history, not the actual content. 2 papers about anything and 1 performance analysis paper. I honestly didn't read most of the plays, just the ones I wrote about. Boring, useless class.
"I'm trying to help you all avoid a career in Starbucks." "My draconian grammar policy is designed to prompt revision and the learning of grammar. It is not intended to sink students' final grades." - Rankin. He's extremely arrogant. The class was just about textual evidence in Shakespeare's plays. Grammar policy will affect your final grade.
Definitely not an easy A and there is reading due every day of class, with a 4 question clicker quiz. You can tell he really enjoys the material but it is a difficult class. It was not exactly what I was thinking it would be. If you pay attention and do the reading you can get a decent grade. He also has writing exams which were difficult.
so. many. papers. Read 1 play a week and lecture MWF. 3 pg paper due every Monday. Of course the quantity of work brings down quality! I burned out 12 way thru. Grades come back so slowly that you get no feedback unless you go to office hours. Knows so much about content that its easy to get lost in what hes saying in lecture. Take Favila instead!
Do not take this professor. His lectures consist of him walking around, flipping through pages in the textbook, scribbling the occasional note, and being very unclear. Tests ask meticulous questions that test your ability to remember random details, rather than understand the actual texts. NOT an easy A gened at all. Take Harrison instead!!
While Dr. Rankin is very knowledgeable, he talks to students like they're fellow Shakespeare scholars, making obscure references that confuse students. No one talks in class either, which makes it unbearable. Eleven(!) three-page essays, but the grammar policy isn't a big deal. As for grades, it's almost impossible to get an A. Easy B, though.
Never have gotten lower than an A in a lit or english class before I took this. Did all the readings and still had a 50% average on reading quizzes (every day). Don't take him if you want to do well in a Gen Ed. Way too much information to cover and his tests were very very specific. 1 person got an A on the final.
I took Dr. Rankin for a Tolkien class, and it was really interesting. He's obviously passionate about what he teaches. He's a tough grader, but if you communicate with him about your papers, he's happy to help. Don't take him for an easy A; take him for a professor who cares about his work and challenges you to care as well.
My beef with this guy is that he is the most chaotic thinker I've ever seen. Cannot string his thoughts together to save his life. Quizzes nearly impossible unless you have a photographic memory. I'm an honor student who loves the content but I'm not going to do well in this kill-joy class. You'll get a B at best.
This class is the hardest English gen ed that exists. A third of the class dropped. The tests are impossible, his notes are illegible and if you don't follow his every thought you will not do well on the tests. HARD and UNORGANIZED LECTURES
Lectures are long and boring. Quizzes every day. Cannot pass this class with out reading every single page.
By far one of the worst classes I've taken at JMU. Rankin lectures by reading from the book and jumps from one thing to another. I spend hours doing all of the readings and fail the in-class quizzes which are everyday. AVOID. Do. not. take.
Very passionate about what he teaches, with that said however his lectures are boring and hectic since he just reads from the text and jumps from point to point. Every class starts with a clicker quiz from a assigned reading and the quizzes are never more than 9 questions so its hard to get a decent grade.
Super detail oriented lectures so make sure you take good notes, everything he says in class or that comes up in readings can potentially be on a test. You'll need a clicker for daily in class reading quizzes which can be very detail oriented. Knows his stuff, nice guy, and helpful in office hours.
For a GenEd, this class is VERY challenging. Definitely one of the hardest I've ever taken; but Rankin is very passionate about the subject, and after he opens up he's a great guy. Not an easy A; his daily quizzes are too specific sometimes, and the tests are difficult, but if you put in effort it's not impossible. I got a lot from this class.
Imagine you had a lecture outline and then you tore that outline into many different pieces. After that, you take the pieces and throw them into a basket. From there you go to class and proceed to lecture from your outline which you are randomly drawing from the basket. That lecture would still most likely be easier to follow than Rankin's lectures
Professor Rankin doesn't seem to understand that this class is a gened and almost no one in it is an english major. He's knowledgable on the topics we speak about but makes things harder than they should be. He also gets political pretty easily which doesn't seem appropriate in a class of 200+ people with different political views.
Although Dr. Rankin himself was a nice professor and well respected, you'd need to be an english major in order to understand the material and get a decent grade with the way he teaches. Trust me, do not take this course unless you can easily understand the intricate details of old literature and are able to find deeper meaning in every text.
Dr. Rankin's Eng 235 class was enlightening and enjoyable. Would highly recommend.
Do not take this class!!! He expects graduate level work and is extremely condescending. He has constructed a makeshift grammar exam that is nearly impossible to pass, but if you don't pass it you receive an incomplete for the entire course (which will turn into an F). Hate him, will never take a class with him again.
He gives so much reading and grades so hard. His classes are boring. Unless you love to read, then take him.
I don't recommend this class if you expect to get an A. Exams are annoying explications, and I got a B- on a work I understood because the grading criteria was misleading. That said, this class literally illuminated my understanding of the dark ages. Rankin is knowledgeable, serious and passionate. If you're smart you will like his lectures.
I don't recommend this class if you are looking for an easy grade . It is pretty difficult. Even if you do the reading, don't expect everything to make sense. Rankin knows a lot about the topics he teaches in the class, but does not do extra credit.
Rankin is super condescending. He is clearly very knowledgeable on the topics and makes sure you know he is. There are tons of readings and quizzes at the beginning of each class that are very tricky. I would not take him.
Dr. Rankin expects his students to work extremely hard. Yes, he is a difficult grader and it can be extremely frustrating when you receive disappointing grades, but you will learn a lot and become a better writer. Hard class but he is always eager to help and wants you to succeed. Visit office hours and it will help you tremendously!
Good pick. He's super passionate, if you like reading and learning you'll love this class. The lectures are magical, and you haven't lived until you cry on the pages of Beowulf in the Carrier stacks.. This class enhanced my life's education.
Do NOT take this class. You have to buy 8 books. There are 5 short papers due approx. every other week that he grades very harshly. He doesn't provide topics/prompts and expects you to flesh out a graduate-level analysis of the text in only 3 pages. Then there is a 8 pg midterm and a 10 pg final. His lectures are incredibly boring and unhelpful.
Dr. Rankin assigns 7 papers throughout the semester. Oftentimes you will not have your previous paper back to see how you could improve for the next. Furthermore, he likes to tell people that answers are just simply wrong, something I had not ever seen in an English class. If your essays do not align to viewpoint you will fail. Will not take again.
Dr. Rankin is all over the place. His lectures don't make any sense and his expectations for the papers are not clear at all. He expects graduate level work, yet can't clearly instruct the material. Super super hard class.
He is a kind person, but not warm at all- he is blunt and borderline rude sometimes. He expects a little too much of students for it being mostly a pre-req. There are in-person written exams on readings that aren't graded too harshly, and a midterm and final exam with pretty specific info. The lectures are boring, but he speaks really quickly
Professor Rankin is a good guy and really cares for and loves Shakespeare but his material makes no sense. His lectures never follow a clear line of reasoning but your papers must be clear and line up with HIS reasoning or else you'll get a bad grade. It feels like there is no winning in this class as far as academics are concerned.
Dr. Rankin is very knowledgable but difficult to understand. Concepts were hard to grasp and lectures were pretty dense. No technology. Accessible outside of class. Wouldn't take unless you are VERY prepared to work.
Professor Rankin is extremely knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches but beware english 235 is NOT an easy course. I would not take this gen ed if you aren't an english major. (I am and this course was still difficult for me) Additionally, if you aren't passionate about the topic the class feels very very long.
Hes a very nice professor, but the course itself is very difficult. For a gen Ed, I wouldnt take it. Almost all of the grades are tests that are difficult, and require a good amount of reading to do well at all. Attendance isnt mandatory but you really should go to class to try and understand the material.
Several extra credit opportunities (one is an entire letter grade boost) and there are hundreds of opportunities to talk with him throughout the semester if you need help. Taking advantage of office hours/email is a must. Lots of reading to be done, but none of it feels like busywork. Perfect prof for people who like having to think.
This class has made me a better writer and even if it feels intimidating to only have essays and a test graded, there are so many opportunities to speak with Dr. Rankin about your writing and improving your work. If you're not a fan of long papers, maybe this class isn't for you, but it's definitely worth it for those who are.
I really didn't like him he's so boring and im sure he's trying his best but the content is just so hard to read and understand and he doesn't do a good job making it interesting at all.
His feedback on essays is actually helpful IF you are already writing at an advanced level. If you're still trying to improve from high school level writing, you won't do well. He has very strong opinions that your paper must align with. Do not take with other hard classes (esp if you have no choice). He teaches like its a 400 level english class.
He's definitely passionate about the subject, but the lectures were long and rather boring. He also only graded us on five assignments, with two of them being long papers worth 50% of your grade. If you do badly on just one of those longer papers you're screwed for the rest of the semester. I went from a B+ to a C- just from one of the long papers.
I dont even know how to start this. Just dont. The class itself is insightful into different aspects of literature and he is passionate & knowledgeable about what he teaches. You will lose your sanity taking this class. It is dependent on the papers you write and he is an extremely hard grader. If you care about your mental health, dont do it.
DON'T take this class unless you have to. If you do, take it junior/senior year (or when you're 100% confident with writing). He's knowledgeable, but a very disorganized lecturer. My advice? Read everything (including announcements) and take lots of notes. Refer to them for papers/final because if you contradict his opinion, you'll lose points.
Professor Rankin is a good professor for English majors but assigns way too much reading for a gen ed class. Aside from the reading attendance wasn't mandatory and he posted slides from every class session.
This class is not an easy A, but you will definitely learn and become a better writer. He is very forward with his expectations and they may come off as intimidating, but he will help you if you email him or go to his office hours. I think that if you are a non-English major that he'll be difficult, but if you are it will benefit you.
I would like to preface and say that he is passionate about what he teaches and you wont get anything but disappointment if youre not passionate too. Do not take for gen eds. Do take if you really want to improve your writing and understand Shakespeare on an intense level.
Very knowledgeable about Shakespeare and has many great insights and ideas on it. However, he was very disorganized in his lecture style and only covered the HISTORY part of the curriculum and none of the comedies. I am a junior ENG major, but this class crushed me. Do not take for a GENED. Do not take unless you are VERY secure in your writing.
Please do not be swayed by some of the other reviews! Dr. Rankin is a phenomenal professor and person who will help you grow tremendously as a critical thinker, researcher, and writer. Visit his office hours, work hard, apply yourself, and you will learn so much. He deeply cares for his students and will help you succeed!
Save yourself the stress and please for the love of God, chose another ENG class. Will only teach from what he perceives to be "right" and is so insanely critical. He needs to understand that life is not all about Shakespeare and that not every student shares his level of passion for the subject material. Get ready to read until your eyes cross.
Dr. Rankin is very passionate about what he teaches, but not a very engaging lecturer. If you do not love Shakespeare, his class will be a challenge just to sit through. His grading is very inconsistent. He is not clear about exactly where points are lost on assignments and his written feedback is very condescending.
GO TO OFFICE HOURS! I think not doing so is the biggest mistake his . Trust me, he's way less intimidating one-on-one than in a class or over email. He couldn't be more helpful in his office hours. Yes, his classes are very difficult, but an A is so possible if you regularly talk with him about assignments. He'll literally give you sources to use.
He's very passionate about his subjects - if you are not passionate as well, don't take this course. You'll also be doing a lot of reading and writing for this course. You definitely have to be at least decent at writing or you will do poorly in his class. He will answer any questions you have, though, so don't be afraid to ask.
Dr. Rankin's teaching style is definitely not for everyone, but he is not a hard professor. The material can be hard, but he is very open to questions and will help you if you come to him. He clearly loves his work which I appreciate in a professor. There were 3 essays and 2 exams in this class and honestly, the essays were all VERY manageable.
Dr. Rankin has a contagious passion for the material and illustrates his assertations well. He is very personable and easy to talk to, and a tough but fair grader. To succeed in his class, you MUST go to office hours. Be honest about where you are in the assignment so he can help you. Spend time outside of class reading and writing. Best of luck!
The class is difficult, but Dr. Rankin tries his best to explain well. There are two essays and two tests. Those are difficult. He offers extra credit but its a pain in the butt. He also is snarky sometimes and will call you out in class if he sees you on your phone, and proceed to yell at you to get out. But he did make old English interesting.
To be honest this whole class was confusing. You had to read an insane amount and his lectures were confusing. He seems very sweet but I would not take this class with him for credit. The readings were difficult and in old English which didn't really make sense. He knew exactly what he was talking about but was hard to follow.
Very knowledgable teacher on the subject. However, does not seem to realize that this class is a gen ed and everyone is there because they have to be. He knew a lot about the subject but the lectures were very hard to keep up with. There were only 5 grades the entire year. The essays were not graded too tough but the exams were very difficult.
Beware that this class has a ton of readings. Professor Rankin is definitely very passionate but teaches the class as if its upper level and not a GenEd. His lectures are hard to follow and it's all about old English so that doesn't help. If you love English go for it, but if not I would shy away from this class.
very boring mandatory lectures, got the same grade on all 3 essays despite different levels of effort being put in (grade was 87.5) & literally got no feedback, NO PHONES or you'll get called out in front of the entire class, exams are difficult and tedious. not the worst class, you'll be fine if you take it, but i would definitely try to avoid it
Rankin is charismatic and kind, his grading methods being harsh, but they provide immense feedback in hopes of potentially improving your papers. The three papers and annotated bibliographies, along with the final exam, can be difficult, to say the least, but if you attend office hours, you'll pass the class. Take advantage of his brain.
His lectures were beyond boring, I love to read but picking apart every meaning in a book is tiring. His essays are only open from 8am-5:10pm and you don't know the prompt until then. If you don't LOVE old-middle English books and poems do yourself a favor and avoid this class. It was also in Harrison 2105 so it got so hot so quickly.
His class was just him reading off of a powerpoint and from the books. It was very hard to understand what he was trying to explain. If you don't use the powerpoints and read the books, the class is almost impossible to pass. He puts ZERO enthusiasm into his lecture and if you use electronics, he calls you out in front of the entire class
Dr. Rankin is a great professor, and he is very enthusiastic about the content being taught. The poetry itself is difficult yet very interesting, and he does an amazing job at helping students interpret the poems. His exams are near impossible if you do not put in effort. This class is made to make you think deeper, and I enjoyed it!
Dr. Rankin incredibly passionate, something that makes all the difference when it comes to taking a GenEd class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want to do well on the four grades you'll receive (three in-class essays, one exam), you need to be there. My only gripe: the amount of $ I had to spend on books (~$88, and that was via ThriftBooks)
Out of all of the literature classes, this is probably one of the safer classes to pick. I took his class on Tolkien and the material was really interesting. He is really passionate about the material which makes the lectures better. The reading is intense though, so I don't recommend taking other intense classes. The only grades are 4 exams btw
Dr. Rankin is very well-informed on the content he teaches. He is incredibly passionate about studying how Tolkien developed his legendarium, and I admit that this appreciation has somewhat rubbed off on me. This is the only English class I've ever taken that has actually intrigued me, so I applaud Dr. Rankin for his efforts.
Dr Rankin was incredibly informed and passionate about Tolkien's Legendarium. He knows what he's teaching, and he loves it. The lectures were incredible, very few of them felt long and tedious. I will say the grades are based on 3 essays and the final exam. Go to the lectures and read the books and you'll be fine.
Dr. Rankin was an excellent professor. He loves the material and wants you to understand it. In his office hours I was always asked if I felt better than I did before coming in. He is extremely intelligent. The workload was manageable, 50p/class. The grading itself was tricky; however, as there is only 3 50 minute in class essays and one final
I will say that Dr. Rankin is very passionate about the Tolkien literature and most of the lectures were interesting. The only thing to note is that for a GenED I think he makes it more difficult than it has to be. There are only 4 grades the whole semester so if you do bad on one it pretty much tanks your grade.
Mark Rankin's class exploring the works of Tolkien has been one of my favorite classes at JMU thus far. While it is a challenging class, not an easy A, the work and passion that Rankin puts in makes it worth it! If you show up for lecture and make an effort to understand the material outside of class, it will not go unnoticed! 100% recommend!!
He is a great guy, very friendly and lovable, but also strict when necessary.
Excellent professor, very passionate about bibliography. Wants you to succeed and will work with you to make sure you have what you need to do well. Difficult and rigorous class, but you learn SO much about the content and useful skills. The manuscript assignment is so fun. Do NOT procrastinate on assignments. 100% worth it!
I would probably not recommend this class unless you're an English major or really passionate about Early Modern/Reformation lit. 50pg readings per class, 3 annotated bibliographies, 3 essays, a final exam. Intense and knowledgeable professor. I greatly enjoyed this class, and Dr. Rankin is very passionate.
Dr. Rankin is a great professor. His class is exactly what you would expect from an upper-level English class. As someone who is not an English major, Dr. Rankin makes the content easy to understand, and it is also accessible to answer questions. He is very passionate about what he teaches. You get what you put into it.
This is by far the worst English professor I ever met. To him acceptable work only gets a C tanking your gpa. He has no compassion towards students. He as focused on inappropriate parts of the readings for excessive amounts of times. Making me super uncomfortable, it was never gonna be something we would write about but he talked for 20 mins.
He is a great and passionate professor, as long as you take good notes, pay attention, and come to all the lectures you should be good! (Even if you don't do the readings - although I recommend doing them since they are amazing books! If you like mythology this is absolutely for you!!
He's very weird about having devices out during class (ejected someone on the first day just for pulling out their phone). Books are good, he's very passionate but also yaps nonstop, classes can be a bore.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The only grades are 4 exams, that's it. The books are impossible to read. You will scream if you take this class bruh don't do it. HARD gen ed
He's very passionate but it's a lot for a gen-ed. The books are interesting but difficult. Lectures are long and dry. 3 essays and 1 final exam are the only 4 grades. A's aren't really a thing in this class which is wild for a gen-ed English. No technology which isn't a huge deal. Overall frustrating and boring but if you need the gen-ed it's there
I usually don't do these, but I wanted to post my personal experience from Dr Rankins class. He is a very intellectual guy and extremely passionate about Shakespeare. However, he is a very tough grader. He does give feedback but make sure you do your assignments on time because he is pretty strict about things being in on time otherwise low grade.
If you're not an English major, don't take him. With that said, Dr. Rankin is one of my favorite professors. Very passionate about the course content, very traditional prof, and gives great feedback on work. 3 ABs, 3 papers, and a final exam (which is pretty difficult). Readings can be hefty because of the language, but ultimately rewarding.
Genuinely insufferable class. 50+ pages of reading per class where he just glazes Tolkien the whole time. This guy has a very weird god complex with phones and kicks people out of class very aggressively if he sees you on it. I didn't do the reading and got most of the info from lectures and did fine on the 3 in-class exams. The final was hard.
