Most boring professor I've ever had. I've always been good at History however he makes it physically impossible to follow what's going on in class. I've never spent so much time waiting for class to be over. ALL OF HIS TESTS INVOLVE READINGS! It is impossible to do well without the boring primary sources. He's pretty nice but a snooze fest.
Nice guy who likes teaching. Some lectures were long but i didnt think he was boring. More reading than usual for an intro class and he makes you take online reading quizzes that can be annoying but are not hard. Exams (two midterms and final) are written but he gives study guides that help.
As a person, he's really sweet and very approachable. His lectures however, can be quite boring unless you're enthusiastic about the subject. Online quizzes every 2 weeks, 1 one to two-pages long paper, 2 mid-terms and 1 final. The mid-terms and final essay questions can be challenging, but he gives the questions beforehand. TEXTBOOK IS A MUST.
Good professor, very passionate about LA History. I liked his lectures. Very helpful with papers, will give you good feedback.
He's a nice guy, but unless you keep up with the readings, you won't pass. His lectures are a bit boring, but he knows his stuff. A few exams and a final, and they all rely on the documents from the textbook, sans the final. Online quizzes every two weeks.
Most of the people who did not like Prof. Rice were just looking for an easy A. He was tough, but he taught everything clearly and explained exactly what would be on the exams. I guess I understand some people saying his lectures could be boring. But that's only if you have no interest in history. Regardless, great professor!
Pretty sweet guy, but lectures aren't the most interesting (probably because of the subject tho). Gives you all the possible terms and essay questions for midtermsfinal and doesn't mind collab on study guide with friends. If you need help, he'll even look over your term definitions and essay outlines, so you know you're studying the right thing.
This is an extremely fair class; Rice is a great professor, and even if you don't like history, he makes his lectures pretty interesting. While he assigns a LOT of reading, the textbook isn't all that necessary if you come to class and take good notes. His tests correspond to the material learned in class, and his grading policy is fair. Take him!
He tries to be funny but sometimes his jokes are lame but you really have to pay attention to his lectures because they can be kind of boring. But if you listen to his lectures then you don't need to read the textbook. everything he says in the lectures are on the tests. hes a good professor though!
Prof. Rice is very knowledgeable. He loves history. He makes funny jokes. He really makes the class interesting. He is always there for you when you need him. No papers, just online quizzes and three exams. You do have to go to his lectures because it contains a lot of information. Definitely recommend!
Great educator.
Professor Rice is a nice really nice guy, his lectures are kinda boring but if you pay attention you won't really need the textbook, 7 quizzes from blackboard, 3 tests including the midterm and final, in my opinion his test are a little challenging but if you come to class all the time and take notes, you'll be fine
An amazing professor that has intense passion for history and keeps you coming for more. A laptop is highly recommended to be used for his lectures because every word he says is significant to remember for the exams. He tries to make the lectures interesting by doing hilarious skits and humorous jokes to keep your attention.
Great teacher, but don't take him expecting an easy A. The lectures are quick paced and packed with information, but he makes it very interesting. If you ever need help, attend office hours. He's willing to help you out any way you need. Definitely buy all the textbooks, and keep up with the readings.
I am horrible at history, and he made it very easy for me. Granted, you do NEED to pay attention and keep up with the reading if you want to do well, but it is definitely doable. I would recommend.
Gives long lectures that are packed with too much information over the course of a few weeks then expects you to take a test after all that information with no review at all. He's mad corny with his jokes and just a dumb guy.
dude this guy rly gets on my nerves hes aa nice guy but his tests are so long and hard
i really had a passion for history until i took this class
Professor Rice is a very nice guy. His class was fair and his grading criteria was clear . He is very passionate about history and there is a genuine care that he has for his students. I would recommend him if you actually like history, other wise he may seem a bit dry
Nice professor, clear grading system. As long as you do the readings, you're fine.
Amazing.
He's alright, history is a really boring and he doesn't really make it much better, jokes are weird and corny, his class is super lecture heavy no powerpoints. Make sure to take down everything he says if not your screwed
He makes history class interesting.
don't look at those deliberate bad comments. he's a good professor
History is pretty boring on its own and Prof. Rice does not make it any better. Definitely lecture heavy and if you don't take notes then you won't do well because the tests are based on notes. He provides powerpoints but they contain no type of information. It is a pretty boring class and I do not recommend taking him if you suck in history.
He is a nice professor but give a lot of work. Get ready to read! His exams are very hard. Overall this class is boring.
Professor Rice is a cool guy who gives pretty solid lectures. He doesn't really enforce a lot of the readings but they will help you on your test if you do them. There's no homework but reading quizzes every two weeks which is very nice. Just pay attention in class and take good notes and it's an easy A.
Do not take unless you are willing to read like 200 pages a week.
Nice guy. Sometimes his lectures seem long but most of them are really interesting. Besides the exams cover the material in lecture so if you show up and take decent notes you're fine in the class. Assigns reading but nowhere near 200 pgs like the other reviews say. He's smart and knows his stuff. I recommend him, especially if you like history.
Professor Rice is a very good professor! He makes the lecture interesting and easy to understand, however you really need to pay attention since the lectures are packed with information. He assigns online quizzes every two weeks which are simple and there are two tests and one final. Definitely read the primary sources he assigns.
he's nice and enthusiastic about history but there's no power points. All of your notes come from him lecturing it becomes hard to study for as he doesn't give review sheets either. Be ready to read 200+ pages of the textbook per test. Never cut class as your gonna miss out countless pages of notes. Finally make sure to listen to everything he says
Very knowledgeable in history. Must pay attention and take notes to everything he says. His lectures are really boring. Theres a lot of information you need to know for his exams. His multiple choice aren't hard if you take good notes. On the other hand, he grades the essay parts really tough. Doesn't give feedback besides to know it better.
Prof. Rice is really an expert in history, very knowledgeable. Great and interesting lecture. lot of reading. If you want to learn something about history, take his class
You won't miss it. If you pay attention to the contents and take detailed notes, you will find you learn a lot about global history when you review and get great grades. He gives well-organized lectures which are interesting. In addition, he is really helpful if you are confused about class when you do ask questions after class.
Professor Rice doesnt get enough credit for how good he is. History can be extremely difficult but he makes it more accessible with his lectures. Theyre long but perfect for note taking, and he tries his best to make them interesting and to the point. Long readings, easy quizzes if you read, and fair tests. Hes one of the better HIS professors.
His lectures are engaging and funny. Takes attendance but allows a reasonable amount of absences.
Professor Rice does have interesting lectures. My problem with him is his multiple choice. I'm a good student and i find his tests are really difficult. I do better on the writing than the multiple choice. Boring way of receiving grade for the semester. Only based off tests and quizzes. Don't take this class if you're a bad test taker.
The best history professor I had in a while. Hes really smart and his lectures are super engaging and interesting. Just pay attention in class and take some notes to study for the test and youll do very well.
great professor. there are 3 different books required to read and later you have to read articles for every lecture. if you make some notes and attend the lectures you will pass.
Great professor. Would take again.
Good guy, he tries, he is published author and supremely funny. Take him if you can. Good luck ;0
Professor Rice is a very nice guy, he knows and loves what he teaches. He can be a tough grader on the exams so you must know the material for the test. There are a couple of online quizzes that are a easy 10/10. Definitely read the textbook and get your test information from there as well as class notes. Pay attention to everything he says in clas
Good guy, I want to take him for my capstone.
Be prepared to take lots of notes and read textbooks. Very respectful professor and is very professional. No homework but gives online quizzes. Tests are challenging and require to think outside the box (consist of multiple choice and 2 essays). He gives verbal notes so be prepared to write/type very fast and receive lots of information.
he is a good professor but the test is really hard, sometimes the question aren't even related to the stuff he teach. For example, there is one question on the final asking " which immigrants will mostly be affected during the 1900s" which professor didn't explain on that.
Definitely a sweetheart, love him as a person. His lectures are interesting but fast paced. He is very straightforward with exams theres no tricks Pay attention in class and youll be fine Also all the textbooks are mandatory you probably wont pass without doing the readings. You need three books all are moderately priced (buy used books or rent)
He's a great professor, his really nice and his class is an easy A. He asigns two papers and a final. The only con I would say is the asigns lots of readings but read everything he assigns because he'll ask u questions about it the next day in class. He mostly grades u on participation. I took him twice!
He is a good professor. Cares for his students and tries to find a way to give a better explanation when something isn't clear. Straight forward with dates for tests and the material that will be covered. Well organized. Very friendly, too! :)
Professor Rice is great. He cares about his students and wants them to do well. He's also passionate about what he's teaching which makes the class way better. Just study and pay enough attention, you'll so great.
Professor Rice is a really great Professor. He cares about his students and shows passion for what he teaches. He is well-prepared for every class. I enjoyed his class, even though there were plenty of things to read. Be prepared to buy the books because youll need them. Online quizzes every 2 weeks, two in class exams and final
Nicest professor Ive ever had. He really wants you to succeed
Professor Rice is a great professor and really knows a lot. My issue with the class was the fact that I never wanted to take it in the first place. Baruch picks your schedule as a freshman (first semester). A lot of reading that I didn't want to do, exams are extremely hard if you dont care about history. If you love history tho, great prof.
Had online classes with him. He's a very chill guy. Attendance to lectures are not mandatory. In this class you just have to read all of the weekly sources and they really are a pain. There are 2 exams one final, as well as seven reading quizzes. Can get boring at times but other than that everything is valid
Great professor. Super chill and enthusiastic about his class. Only 10 Multiple Choice exams and 2 Written Exams.
A nice guy and is pretty understanding due to the pandemic. Does not require camera or mic and records lectures so you can be flexible with your time. Also allows you the option of writing a paper instead of a multiple choice test, he does this for all of them. He curves his mc tests but they are not searchable. But beware he gives A LOT of reading
He is a great guy and knows a lot about this subject but he gets boring. He gives reading quizzes every other week. Lots of reading! He gives options when taking the exams, either writing a paper or taking a test. He is a tough grader when grading the written exam. The written exam is not curved but the test exam is.
Super nice professor! He's really caring but sometimes his lectures can get a bit boring.
He means well however the readings for the history department is outrageous at best. If you think a group chat for his class is going to help you in his class, you're sadly mistaken!
Mark is a good man and mentor, fun to talk with and relatively easy grader. My experience with him was superb. He is a well read fella who knows his way around history. I'm not going to sugarcoat it, you will have to read... a lot and in turn answer exam questions. Exams are not THAT wild though, so you'll be fineee. Cheers to taking his class!
He was annoying, he would only talk in his lectures there are NO NOTES hes just talks. He would base test and quiz off of anything that he spoke about in class and he speaks extremely fast. I would advise you to RUN if you see him on your schedule!! Attendance isnt mandatory but if you dont go to the class you will be lost all semester and fail!
He's nice but his readings are too much and for one of the textbook readings it is very dense. The exams are based on the readings (quiz too but it's online) and his lectures. For his lectures, he just talks and his slides only have pictures. Taking notes for his class is hard because of this.
Lectures are very boring. Slides are literally useless they consist of pictures with no notes. Uses A LOT of filler words so its easy to lose track of his point. count how many times he says "kind of". A LOT of reading every week, and they're separate from his lectures so you have to keep up with two things. He's a nice person though.
He's nice, his lectures are long and sometimes get a little boring. Attendance is not mandatory, but everything he says during class is what the test will be about. It's important to pay attention and take notes of what he's saying. As long as you do the readings, listen to the lectures and take good notes, you'll be fine.
He is fine. You will not pass if you do not take notes!!! This is the type of class where you actually have to do the readings because you will be tested on them. Readings are long, lecture gets boring, tests are hard and he is a hard grader. If you listen, read, study, take good notes, you will at least pass.
He was an alright professor who was nice but the readings he assigned were very long and hard to keep up with. That was pretty much my biggest issue with the course. Everything else like the homework quizzes and exams were fine (the exams were curved including the final). The final is cumulative so keep that in mind when picking this professor.
Rice is a great professor, no doubt about it. I was a bit inconsistent but with more dedication I could've gotten at least a B. Powerpoints are not text heavy but he organizes topics into sections shown at the beginning of class. He provides a lot of important information so be sure to take good notes. 7 quizzes (easy 100's), 2 exams, and 1 final.
I failed all my tests but he passed me.
Professor Rice made a very dense and (boring) subject not so bad. His class is a lecture, but he will occasionally ask a few questions. He gave a few homework quizzes (all multiple choice) and he curved the exams. He's a really relaxed and humorous teacher. Make sure you pay attention and take good notes during his lecture.
He teaches his lectures very detailed but moves on very fast so be prepared to type fast. He's a pretty funny and chill guy but kinda a hard professor. He assigns so many readings to the point where I don't even do them anymore. His exams are curved (thank god) and he gives out reading quizzes once in a while and those are really easy.
His lectures are well organized. I never read the textbook once, and get 10/10 on his reading quizzes (just look up the answers online). The tests are pretty fair, and going to his office hours really does help.
He is a good guy. Attendance is optional but lectures are important. Do good on the six online quizzes as they are 25% of your grade. Does not give extra credit. If you do the work, you should be able to get an A. Also, Chili pepper alerttttt.
Great professor, grade is based on two exams in person and six reading quizzes online. A lot of reading from textbook and other materials, explains everything well in lecture, only downside is his lecture slides are only pictures.
Don't take it if you're not used to reading a lot or have issues keeping up with weekly discussion board posts. Other than that, he's overall awesome with his teaching style. Understanding, compassionate, and lenient. If you can give you're 100% in this course, you'll pass for sure! Provides extra credit opportunities too!
I really like how he teaches! Attendance and taking notes is key for this class. His powerpoint are just a pictures/important names, so you'll miss a lot if you skip a class. Just study your notes and you'll do well. I respect his teaching so much even if others think its a lot of work (note taking) on their behalf
You cannot miss a day of his class, if history or reading off textbook/documents is not your thing GL! Heavily recommend recording his lectures cuz he goes by lectures really fast. Reading quizzes are easy, all tests including the final are the same format.
He only grades by a few things, mainly quizzes and exams. Quizzes are extremely easy, exams can be difficult. Exams are based on topics he covers in class and textbook, so you cannot be behind/miss his class. Also his power points are useless. He is overall chill, just don't be behind and you'll do good.
I had him as a freshman during Fall 2021. I loved this professor because he's very clear, concise, and understanding. Taking notes and focusing is crucial if you want to pass. Weekly 10 question quizzes based on weekly reading, and in-person exams, some questions short response. Take him!
Overall, Professor Rice is a kind and passionate history professor. However, one issue with the course was its difficulty. The reason its so difficulty was the excessive reading, along with two midterms and cumulative final. I believe the class would improve if the reading assigned was reduced. Nevertheless, it was still a great course overall.
Great prof. A kind soul who cares for students. I got a B,C, and D on my exams and still ended with a B+ thanks to the easy hw quizzes (Blackboard)Super heavy reading though, not all are necessary IMO.Just do the main readings, attend the lectures and take notes word for word, use common sense in exams and you're good.
Show up to class and do the readings, when i stopped my grade dropped. He's very kind and curves the tests.
Exams are crazy hard, literally the chapters are huge and so many details to remember. He is unkind, selfish, and impatient. He is extremely messy and doesn't even know what he's doing half the time. His syllabus makes no sense and he acts nice but he's the worst prof ever.
So hard to keep up during his lectures bc how fast he speaks. Beware when he says "It's important to note that.." because whatever he says next will most definitely be on the exam. You know you took good notes when you do not have time to look at him. He has a sense of humor and is v kind though.
Professor Mark Rice is legitimately, the greatest person I've met. He's kind, he understands situations, his office hours help to clarify questions about lectures or the textbook, and if you miss a class or sleep in class, he could refresh what the lecture was about. However, you need to read the textbook, take notes, and study to do well. 10/10.
The chapters are huge. He talks at like 100mph and he is inconsiderate. He offers no extra credit. I didn't enjoy this class. His office hours are a waste of time. He doesn't understand any scenarios and refuses to help anyone.
I'm just really lazy asf and his lectures are so boring. There is some good stuff he talks about but overall boring. I have not read a single page of the textbook he had us buy and I'm currently sitting with a b+. He is a genuine person. Just pay attention!!
DONT TAKE HIM! The test and quizzes make up the entire grade and his test are very hard. Make sure to know how to type fast because he speaks fast for his two hour lectures and doesnt post them online so if you miss something for the test you're screwed. ALSO THE FINAL IS CUMULATIVE MAKE SURE TO GET NOTES FROM EVERYONE IN THE ROOM!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is boring and just unhelpful for anything. He acts like he's saving your life if you try to ask for extra credit. Literally so glad I'm done with this class. He only grades off exams and nothing else. He rants nonstop and doesn't even let anybody process what he says. A cumulative final is insanity too.
You would think it costs him something to make PowerPoints that are actually useful instead of one random image off google.
not a fan, really boring lectures honestly, they put you to sleep like a lullaby.
How can someone be this bad and still keep their job, it's incredible! Please find a better professor, if you take him, you'll be staring at the clock wishing time would go faster CAUSE HE IS SO PAINFULLY BORINGGG.
Very overwhelming lecture because he talks super fast but the stuff he talks about is interesting so it's okay. The only grades you get are from tests. The exams are hard but are pretty much only based on the lectures. You can never read the textbook and still do good on tests. Also, he makes a lot of dad jokes, but overall good teacher.
This class was relatively easy and Prof Rice is very kind. Just attend the lectures, take notes, and you're all set. You're getting graded for 6 take home quizzes and 3 exams. You just need to understand the concepts that he goes over in class. To study, Heimler's AP World videos on YouTube cover everything you need to know for the exams. Easy A.
The class is pretty chill overall, 0 homework, just MAKE SURE TO SET AN REMINDER about the reading quizzes because I missed two of them (1 was dropped), final is cumulative but tbh Ive never studied and still got an A on it Just make sure to pay attention in class and you'll do fine, also you dont HAVE to buy the books if like me you just cant read
Prof Rice is caring and it willing to help if you don't understand his lectures. You have readings every week, which is important for your exams. 6 take home quizzes, 2 exams, 1 final which all add up to be a big part of your grade. Do go to class because it will help you pass. Take good notes and ask questions if you want. Always answers emails.
so boring
Such a great down to earth guy. He's so funny and is very caring. You have to pay attention to him in class or you will be lost, his slides are mostly pictures and he does the talking. There are readings usually every week. His tests are the only thing you get graded on. He talks a little fast too but stops for questions.
If you listen to lectures take him, bro can yap about history for hours. I got this grade cause I didn't pay attention but if you do you can get an A. Reading quizzes and the midterm saved my grade. Rice for president tho lol
Professor Rice is pretty chill, just make sure to keep up with the weekly readings. The exams can be tricky, but using resources like Unstuck study and Heimler's AP World videos really helps. Overall, not too difficult if you stay engaged.
This professor is truthfully one of the worst professors at Baruch. His lecture slides have nothing on them and you cant even study. His midterms and finals are cumulative. He offers no extra credit. If you want an A, do not register for a class where he is the professor. Teachers are supposed to be supportive and kind, something he is not.
Unironically the funniest history professor ever. LOVED him
Overall, I would say he was a pretty good professor. The biggest problem was there was a lot of readings, sometimes interesting, sometimes boring. But, he was very accessible by email, and the best part is he gave very good feedback on essays. You can always send him a draft of your paper and he will give you great feedback. Very chill and funny.
