I saw this rating and thought how extremely unfair it was! Dr. Schneegurt was the only teacher who has ever made a science class interesting for me! He did a superb job with the class presentations and I will always remember what I learned!
Easy teacher if you just go to class and listen. Takes all of his tests from lecture notes, but doesn't take attendance. Makes biology easy to learn
Dr. Schneegurt is a very gifted speaker, making science interesting and fu for someone who has always had trouble with science. the class can be hard, but if you do what he asks you to do, go to the review sessions, and study, you will do okay.
Great teaching style, very conversational and fun. Clearly very knowledgable, wants students to succeed.
Man loves the sound of his own voice, and yet is unable to talk about things class-related. A Yeti could convey the information more effectively!
The man is very bright-but too smart for 210. he cant bring himself down to that level. grades easy tho because he grades on a curve. has a good personality also-is a fun teacher
Class was great. I learned a lot and expect to retain a lot. Tests were kind of hard but no harder than they should have been. Study guides and animations he puts online are very helpful. Lab was worse than words could describe but Schneegurt didn't have anything to do with that.
Do-dah, do-dah. Dorksville USA. Horrible teacher.
He is a very good teacher. His study guides were very helpful. Will take other science classes he's teaching.
Uses a projector and provides very thourough and very clear notes. Had him 3 years ago and still have kept my notes. Tests are based entirely off notes, so go to class. Nice guy, if not a little shy.
He is good for biology. Grades fairly and is willing to help if needed. Study guides are great.
Gifted speaker - illustrative, succinct. Has a healthy dose of goofiness. If you are into science, he raises stimulating scientific questions during lecture. For people who loathes science, he explains everything in a very clear manner. He makes class very less pedantic and less boring. Pretty personable. He will help if you ask.
Very good teacher, gives tests directly from his lecture-don't even need the book. Adds a little humor to class. Picks interesting topics, so even if you aren't into science you won't be bored. Great class and great teacher.
good teacher, a bit cocky, but good
He's a teacher that can actually make lecture intersting. He tells you what will be on the test, but using his online blackboard practice tests/study sheets helps a lot. You do not need to buy the book. Good class and teacher.
Great personality but I'm not impressed with the lecture. He is too smart to teach 210 that he can't get down to our level. Class average on his tests are about a 70%.
Possibly one of the worst professors I have ever dealt with.
This professor was entirely full of himself. Much of the class consisted of brag sessions which seemed only to serve the purpose of pumping up his already large enough ego. His lectures were not very effective. It was easier to read the text on your own.
Way to smart to be teaching this class. Mark's lecture was terrible completely unorganized and pretty hard to follow. Tells us that "the book is not to helpful so make sure you keep notes from me" Well your notes dont help much either when it comes down to the test and you have to know**** from 300 level bio classes. Not fun, dont take with him!
I really enjoyed his Micro class. He is an entertaining lecturer, sure he tells stories a lot which some say is bragging, but he is very smart and knows his stuff. Tests are difficult as they should be for this level of course. Multiple choice. Nice guy.
Didnt have to read the book, just took notes from class and then looked at the illustrations in the book to study before the test and did well in the class. Straight forward questions on the test no trick questions all straight from the notes. Not the class to take if you dont like showing up but if you dont mind taking notes its really a breeze!
The one below me must be a genius or something, but his lectures were very disorganized. His tests had some pretty tricky questions on them...Nothing is really straight forward unless biology is 2nd nature to you.
His lectures were fun. He tries to make jokes and every once in awhile they are funny, but he is hard to take notes from. He has a tendency to bounce around from one subject to another. If you want a good grade on his test pay close attention to the study guide he posts on blackboard.
Great teach.Don't use book save for studying.Strait forward with concise notes.Must study notes before test but sample test and study guide are on blackboard.EVERYTHING is from notes so must reg attend.Energetic, interactive, and comical.Gives advice to students who're having trouble, genuinely cares.Would recommend to serious students who study.
His tests are ridiculous. He describes this class as a "non-majors" course. Then he teaches it like its a graduate level course. All complex multiple choice, such as choose from the following: A).. B).. C).. D)A&B. E)A&C. It comes down not to how much time you invest in learning the material, but how well you can sift through his trick questions.
prof. discourages text book use, but must use textbook to do well. prof. encourages class attendance by testing over lecture material only (per his own statement) though not all test material can be found in lecture notes. very specific questions over maybe one sentence said in class over past 3 weeks. lab graded very hard, asinine questions!
Words can't describe my frustration with him. I transferred from another school and my general bio credit did not transfer, so I had to take WSU's version. I'd already taken A&P and micro earning A's in both, and despite trying my hardest, I wasn't able to manage more than a C. His questions are ridiculous, he even admits he loves tricking students
Mark Schneegurt is a totally arrogant, pompous, and useless professor. He shoud be doing research for an independent company... He has no business teaching, because he does a terrible job.
This exact class should be taught for upper level credit. Schneegurt teaches way too in depth, and he knows it.
WORST teacher I have ever had and I have had some BAD teachers. He has a very rude, cocky personality - very full of himself. This class is a general intro to biology class, yet he teaches it like a graduate level course. DO WHAT YOU CAN TO STAY AWAY FROM HIM!
STAY AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER! He talks more about himself, what he has accomplished, and who he knows, rather than the material pu on the tests. Covers unneccesary material and teaches this class at a graduate class level. Is disrespectful and unwilling to help students when they stop by his office.
Excellent Lecture. Tests solely on what he writes on the overhead. Approachable, funny, and entertaining. If he talks about himself and his career a lot it is only to entertain with a story. Not an egomaniac as some have suggested. Top rate lecturer, perhaps the best the Bio dept has to offer.
auditorium style teaching via overhead projector, test questions all based off of lecture only, must come to class or get notes from someone if you miss class. prof. uses dry humor at times but can also be very controlling, has roster turned off in blackboard so limits communication between students. bio tests are very specific, memorization
Absolutely horrible.
one of the worst teachers i have had in my college career. rude, cocky personality and will treat you with little respect. tests at a graduate level when this is a 200 level class. it's best to take this class from another teacher.
not a good teacher, not a nice guy, not approachable. the only good thing about this guy is that he knows his biology. my opinion, he needs to go to a research facility and quit teaching, he is useless
I was in Dr. Schneegurt's class several years ago, and not only did I learn quite a bit that is applicable to the MCAT (and life), but found him to be helpful both in and out of class. I am suprised at the ratings here. I came from a humanities background, but found his presentation accessible, to the point, and clear. His good humor is dry.
The key to a good grade: write down everything he writes on the overhead. Look up what you wrote in the textbook. Memorize every word. Really Interesting class, wicked tests.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR! Just warning all those you LOVE Biology and want to pass with an A. He gives only 5 tests and his average is a D- for all of them. My class is full up students going for Pre-Med and the class average still pertains! He does not care about the student. He cares only about his "Pulitzer blah blah blah."
Schneegurt actually isn't that bad. Yes, he may be monotone-ish and talk about rock climbing (this semester at least), he knows his material and explains it well. His tests are easy as long as you read the book and his notes. If you get anything below a B, then that's your own fault, not his.
After taking his class, I found out he's actually not a very bad teacher. I recommend going to class every day and writing everything down he says. Literally. I calculated my grades with all 5 tests, final and lab(before addin curve), I shouldn't have gotten anything better than a B in the course but ended up with an A-. That's a pretty good curve.
This guy is fantastic. He tells you straight up what to do to get a good grade and lets you know it's not easy. I would bet big $$ that every bad rating came from a student who A) Didn't read the book, B) Didn't study outside of class, or C) Never even WENT to class and still expected to pass.
Schneegurt is not out to get anyone. His goal is to weed out the students who don't have the aptitude, zeal, or dedication required to excel in medicine. Slightly annoying in a low level class, but commendable all the same.
Difficult class - to be expected it is a 200 level series NOT for students who don't attend class or take good notes. Requires outside study time - 2 hrs per hr of class. Tests are multiple choice, but require deep understanding of material. Knows his stuff - great prof. IMHO. Makes topics ejoyable. Challenging course, but worth it!
Easy class, much easier now with SI sessions. I stopped showing up to class and just read the book and went to few SI sessions and got an A-. For everyone that says his class is hard, tough luck, classes will only get harder. Multiple choice test with 5 answers, so if you don't bother studying then prepare for a bad grade.
He is a very helpful teacher. The class is not too hard, but not too helpful. Attendance is a must! All test material will be discussed during his lectures. SI is available and will be a great help.
thinks he is God. Unbearable to listen to.
Arrogant doesn't even begin to describe this jackass. Always talking about how his "notre dame" students didn't have a problem with this or that. Most teachers care about how you perform and what you learn. He cares about showing how powerful he is!!
does ANYONE even like this guy???? God I'd hate for him to be my father. I agree with everyone else on here. This guy literally thinks he's a God.
Dr. Schneegurt is AWESOME! People need to stop being intimidated by the man and talk to him! He is probably the most knowledgeable professor on this campus and I am honored to be one of his students. He is always willing to help his students and offer his experience and advice!
This guy really knows his stuff, which is kind of good, if say he were teaching a 300+ class, but he's not. He's teaching a 200 level class like it's a 500 level class to people who aren't even biology majors! Also, he likes to bash various religions, which considering this is a biology class is really irritating. I paid for a lecture not a sermon.
I went to class, paid attention, read the book, went to SI and got an A. I went in to talk to him once and he told me that I would end up in a van down under a bridge by the river. He has no respect for students, and like others have said, he thinks he is god. Don't approach him alone, unless you want to be told you're a failure at life.
He really knew his stuff. My only problem with him is that during the 50 minute class, he would spend the first 15 minutes talking about himself. He thinks he all high and mighty and treats students like trash.
Attend SI sessions and all lectures. I read the book, but could have done better with far less study if I had attended all the SI sessions. If Schneegurt were less arrogant he might be at a better school, so be glad he has that flea or 3rd rate WSU probably wouldn't have this competent intructor.
I have had Dr. Schneegurt for multiple classes and all these people that are complaining did NOT study. This is COLLEGE you cannot just simply attend lecture and get your "A". You have to actually work for it. If you are willing to put in the time and effort an "A" in this course is totally in the realm of possibility!!
Everyone that is bashing Dr. Schneegurt's character is bitter because they are not able to do well on his tests. This course is designed for science majors and its molecular biology so it will be slightly tough. He makes you work hard but for good reason because this class is hugely contributes to both bio420 (molecular cell) and bio419 (genetics)
I like this guy. He's very fair, straightforward, and routine - so no surprises. He posts study guides/sample tests on blackboard before every test. Tests are challenging as they should be. SI sessions help quite a bit.
He is a good teacher. He actually teaches! He posts study material (sample tests, vocab, and outlines for notes) on blackboard. Tests are difficult, but manageable with good studying! Attedance isn't required, but is necessary to earn a good grade! I liked this guy! :)
While he is a difficult teacher at times, he knows his stuff and teaches extremely well. Definitely go to class all the time and if he has an SI instructor, DEFINITELY go. They help tremendously. Really liked this class and the teacher.
Challenging class. Pay attention, study, browse the book, attend SI sessions and you'll get a good grade. I will have an A in this class. He posts up helpful material on BlackBoard. Grades are posted right away. You will learn so much. He's a really nice guy.
He's a smart guy. Knows his material real well. The downside to his profession is his arrogance. I just wished he talked more about microbiology in the beginning of class, instead of talking about his teachings in Notre Dame, his personal life (like daughter's gift), and academic misconduct. It just takes away the fun from the class.
He is a decent teacher. class is'nt as difficult as everyone insist, if you put an effort in to study. He is actually a lot easier than the majority of the biology professors at WSU. The only problem I have with him is his obnoxious attitude.
It's unfortunate that some students think Dr. Schneegurt has an "obnoxious attitude" by confusing experience and knowledge with arrogance. He is quite possibly WSU's most exceptional teacher. Class was very interesting with great stories that will keep you awake and interested. Couldn't recommend him enough.
Great guy, horrible professor. Lectures the entire class as if we were all bio majors or grad students. Spends half the class bragging about which Nobel Prize winners he's met before. Never uses PowerPoints, doesn't post notes online. Entire grade is made up from exams, lab, & final. Doesn't allow you to use YOUR old tests as study material.
Dr. Schneegurt is an exceptional speaker, and his lectures always kept me interested in the material. If you take his class, expect to work hard for an A, but know also that at the end of the semester, you'll really know the material. Overall, he was a great professor and extremely approachable.
Does not use ppt, it's all free-hand, which btw, is illegible. Lectures are interesting, but off-tangent. Knows his stuff but is a horrible professor. Doesn't prepare you for his exams, which btw, are extremely difficult. It's a weave out class, and he'll definitely weave you out if you're not studying twenty-four seven
I took this class my first semester freshman year, thinking I could handle it being an entry level class.I was wrong. Don't take this class unless you have nothing else to do it is a 5 hour class that requires 50 hours of work. He presumes you know everything outside of class and is not helpful. I went to him multiple times and he told me to drop
When he had SI, the class was bearable. He's a very VERY detailed man. Pay close attention, record him. Idc if he says don't record him, don't get caught and just do it. Pay attention to what he says, use the textbook as a reference. He's a hard professor, but it is doable.
Dr. Mark Schneegurt single handily crushed all of my dreams to become a medical professional. Arrogant attitude, mr Im better than all of you. For your own sake, avoid at ALL costs!
Dr. Schneegurt talks about himself for the first 20 minutes of class, then proceeds to the lecture, but even during lecture, he just zooms through the notes and they aren't ORGANIZED! No bullet points or anything! Very difficult, I'm trying my best, but not getting the results that I expected, very hard for someone who's minoring in BIO! AVOID HIM!
Not a good teacher. Lectures are on topic, but completely hand written. Doesn't post notes online and is unwilling to help students. Exams are very detailed and hard to understand questions. He also doesn't respond to email communication in a timely manner. Do NOT recommend.
Class was extremely fun and interesting. Dr. Schneegurt has a lot more patience and enthusiasm for his micro students compared to his Gen Bio students. Attendance is a must because his tests for Micro are all lecture. He is good with office hours and always willing to help explain a concept. If I could, I would re-take this class, it's that good.
He is a decent lecturer, but after the first few minutes he starts to drone on and it gets very difficult to pay attention. He's not very helpful if you're struggling. When I asked him how I could prepare better for his tests he told me I should change my major. He didn't even attempt to help me improve my grade. Not helpful at all.
Great professor loved his attitude and loved seeing all the cooments about how he "crushed your dreams of being a doctor" suck it up and read the text book, its a bio 1 class its not hard. This guy was a wealth of information both about the class and topics related to the class. Highly recommended. Loved his honesty.
Dr. Schneegurt is an extremely smart guy and is pretty nice as well. However, this class is unrealistically hard for an intro to biology class. Most definitely a "weed out" class and if you dont give 110% effort every second, then dont expect a good grade. wouldn't recommend at all.
Dr. Schneegurt is incredibly smart. But he does not spoon feed you. I have poor study habits and did not want to read the book at all. I started the class with failing test scores. But after talking to him and getting some study pointers and with my A from the lab, I managed to pass the class with minimal effort. Not a great grade, but passed.
He knows his stuff. The lecture is kind of like storytelling which helps me a lot. Do the study guide and make sure you read the book. He says to email him with questions but he has never responded to any of my questions via email. Definitely take him though. Make friends in class and that's a good way to study for his tests.
Tests are hard, but it just takes studying to get good grades. The more hours of studying you put in the better grades will be. He may seem a little rude at first but just go in if you have questions.
He's a good teacher overall. His lectures can sometimes be hard to follow, but he'll help you if you ask for it. Not an easy class though, if you aren't taking a higher level biology class after biology 210, then take a different teacher.
Mark Schneegurt is an inspiration as a biology professor. He is absolutely fantastic. I honestly can't get over the fact I can't take anymore classes with him. He reminds me every class with him why I am going into biology. His lectures demand respect and are some of the best I've listened to. You won't want to skip class. That good.
Dr. Schneegurt is amazing. I loved his class! He's really funny. One time near the end of the semester he walked in and said "Let's be honest, I don't want to be here." If you need help, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. Trust me, that's the only reason I passed. It's really helpful. And make sure you READ THE BOOK. It's a lot more clear than he is sometimes
Great professor! As long as you show up to class, take notes, and read over the material you should have no problem getting a B or higher in the class.
Has Narcissistic personality disorder, but he is an amazing person. His exams are not that difficult, so to do great in this course. Study his material presented in lecture and look at the sample questions. This course is memorization, so understand the terms in the context presented for them. Study habit is salience of doing well in education !!
He is a good teacher. Knows what he's talking about. but I couldn't learn anything. Taught myself everything by reading the book. The tests mostly come from the study guide he gives. The tests are fairly easy, basic stuff. The final is super easy. lets you come in to look at the tests and questions come from the old tests. Put in work and it's easy
He was pretty nice when I took Bio 1 with him (I hear mixed things about this though). His tests basically follow his study guide so as long as you keep up with the study guide (which he posts on blackboard for each exam) after each lecture then you should be fine. His final is pretty easy too (at least when I took it it was easy).
One of the hardest classes I've taken. Do not take this professor he's not a good teacher. His tests come from the lectures but are very difficult he said 10% of the class will get A's and the class is fairly large so it's very difficult.
One of the worst teachers ever. I went into his office thinking he would be helpful because I'm very adminate about my studies. I was wrong and was given my only C ever at wsu.
He's a nice professor, but I hated this class. He covers lots of subjects, doesn't review, and doesn't understand when students are confused. Tests are multiple choice and he provides study guides, but neither helps you. Tells you some of what will be on the exam and won't, then puts all of it on the exam anyway. Doesn't use the book either.
Schneegurt is intelligent, vain and rude. He's good at teaching, but he's a little too condescending to be around people who know less about biology than him.
Hard but great. Had him for gen bio 1 and micro and got As in both. People who say the study guides don't help.. nonsense- if you know that study guide you'll get an A every time. Typically it's much more info than what's on the test, but know it all. His lectures are interesting & sometimes entertaining. Wish I could take him again for something
Dr. Schneegurt does a great job of making the subject easy. Use the resources he provides you with (he gives sample exam questions and a list of study topics), read the textbook, attend lecture and take good notes. Exams? Very straight forward, he doesn't hide anything from you. Great professor, I really wish he was teaching bio 211 this semester.
I took Prof S for Micro and Applied Micro. He is an amazing teacher. the material is Hard due to memorization. Very knowledgeable man and his personality increase by 10 fold in his higher level class. Study hard, create study groups, go to his office and ask him for tips. DO NOT BUY A BOOK!! He test over what he lectures... He really is amazing
By far one of the best professors I've ever had. Dr. Schneegurt genuinely cares. As long as you show up to class, work hard, you will succeed. Highly recommended!
He was very to the point and taught at a rate that optimized learning. He is a tough teacher but if you follow along and don't get behind, you will learn well from him. Ultimately, his lectures helped me with the MCAT and my med school classes so far. I wish I had him for more bio classes. He also provides good study resources for his tests.
Decent teacher, cool stories. Tests are extremely hard. Class averages are always low. Curves to the highest score in class though. At the end he curves the whole class so stick with it. Look over the practice tests he gives and study guides. Know everything. Final is comprehensive lets you see all tests so just memorize the answers exact same.
His lecture is good but his tests can be harder than expected.
Great professor I really enjoy his lectures and learn a lot.
Lectures can be dry at times, but overall he is a pretty fun guy to listen to. Tests are not lengthy question wise and are pretty direct. There is a LOT of material and most are pretty subjective so make sure you go to class and pick up what he wants you to know rather than googling it. Overall good experience
Dr. Schneegurt is okay... I find his lectures really boring and hard to listen to. He will tell you in lecture that you don't need to know something, and then test you over it. For an intro-level course, I wasn't expecting to study as much as I had to for his tests - very thorough and specific. He has NO time for you outside of his office hours.
terrible
No homework. Only opportunity for points is tests, which are incredibly difficult. I have never had a professor so difficult as him. Lectures are awful, notes are scattered and not organized. Claims you dont need to study things then tests about them!! AWFUL!
Expect to do all your studying on your own. He doesn't teach anything, he just barely covers the basics of concepts you have to learn on your own.
Solid choice for Gen Bio 1. Lectures can be messy and disorganized, but he uploads the notes after each lecture. USE THE TEXTBOOK to go over class concepts. Just do all the study material that he provides. The exam questions are very straightforward.
Mark is a teacher that comes across as a real person, but the restrictions that online classes gave made it almost impossible for me to excel in his class. the lecture grade is composed of 5 exams and the Final. each exam is 60 questions and you have a 60 min time limit, which isn't bed but you need to know the material VERY well.
Professor Schneegurt's notes are super unorganized and very hard to follow along with if you missed the lecture. He does post lecture notes after however, so that helps. I would highly highly recommend looking through the book and taking notes over it yourself prior to listening to lectures. It will make so much more sense.
not good at all.
Attending lecture is very important to create your own notes, as his tend to be a little chaotic although he does post his lecture notes for every single class. Dr. Schneegurt is passionate about his work which makes learning from him fun! Grades come only from exams and lab grade, but it was my favorite class I've taken at uni, would take again!
Dr Schneegurt is enthusiastic and thorough during lecture, and it is imperative that you attend each one; many of his test questions refer to specific details of the material, often only mentioned briefly and not necessarily included in his provided study guides. Very approachable both after class and during office hours.
Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic! Made the course work easy to understand.
BIOL 530 Interesting lecturer! Approachable, friendly, quick to grade and reply to emails. Pretty easy and very manageable as a time commitment. There were 5 exams and 6 one-page papers. Half group, half essay exams (5). Exam essays and papers (6) could be rewritten for reduced credit! Take notes on his words, not just what was written.
Don't take this professor I had in for Bio I was spamming on him by sending him so many emails and asking a lot of questions on what we need to study for and he says wait wait wait wait in a mad way and had put me in the student conduct I don't recommend this professor to anyone.
Lectures were great he takes notes then uploads them into blackboard for easy review. The notes often were important ideas jotted down so it's not enough to look at themself but they help when reviewing your notes. Study guides given. And the final consisted of questions that were scored the best on by students on previous tests.
This professor might be one of the worst ones I've had my entire life. He doesn't explain things thoroughly, he adds unexpected questions in exams, he doesn't answer questions properly, and gets offended when asked any question. I have gone up to him multiple times for help and advice and every time would tell me to get a tutor or just try harder.
Everything in the gradebook is tests, will lecture over everything, uses chemistry ideas to teach his bio class, would recommend another prof if possible.
Read/ work ahead and show up to lecture its not required but if you don't you get lost really easy, also take very detailed notes and rewrite them because he loves to ramble. he's a great guy but be ready for him to stop lecture to talk about rockets over all a very fair grader be sure to go to his office hours he's a nice guy
Professor Schneegurt's BIO210 class is no easy feat, but the detailed lecture notes and practice tests make it manageable. Attending class is a must, and using unstuck ai along with the free textbook can really help with study prep.
Didn't give HW. Horrible Slides (handwritten not legible) Didn't even lecture the first 30 minutes of class. Not for students who don't test well. Been told Logan is the better Bio teacher. Very sloppy teaching style. Take Bio 1 at Barton Community; they offer this course throughout the year, it's SUPER easy and the exact same credit amount.
He does not follow the textbook because he only wants to teach what he belives is true/knows. Spends the first 10-15 minutes of class giving his daily "PSA". Would not take again. Tried to talk to about exam during his office hours but he spent 30 minutes talking about his son getting into med school rather than my exam :(.
Provided a lot of resources on bb and explained topics well. Available for office hours. Only grades were exams and lab. Study for tests and it should be okay. He does curve all the exams and lab, but people typically get 100 or close to on tests so curve is 1 or 2 percent if any.
