he was funny and a good teacher but went too fast
can't write for beans.
Awesome Chem Teacher -- The Best!
Mr. Scraf is a good teacher in the fact that he will help you out if you ask him, and he's a nice guy, but he goes VERY fast and his tests are, well at least for me, weren't too far. He didn't give us a study guide or old exam to practice with.
He's a great teacher
Mr. Schraf is one of my favorite chem professors. He goes fast, but his material is clear. He also makes class very entertaining. :)
awesome awesome teacher. very well at explaining...good examples...and he really cares about the students. funny too
He's an alright teacher but he has very difficult tests. Not only are they hard but his wording is off on some questions. I had a D average in my four core tests, but ended up for w/ a B in the class, so take it as you will
awesome teacher, very helpful...kept boring old chemistry half-entertaining
amusing teacher. pretty easy as long as u keep up with the homework. really nice and entertaining too.
Tricky Tricky Mark Schraf. He is awesome during class, but not as helpful after class. He may say hes not trying to trick you on tests, but trust us, HE IS!
If he wrote in Times New Roman rather than Wing-Dings, his classes would be very clear. Keeps class light, but always comes in 5 minutes late and wants to keep us at the end.
Entertaining, but rather would have had Nakon, goes very fast and it's hard to read sometimes, and he does try to trick you on his test, which are hard and never gives sample tests, OK teacher overall but makes you work.....
Mark is a great teacher and he's so cute
Mr. Schraf is HILARIOUS first of all. He keeps you awake during a typically boring class. He ALWAYS helps you during office hours and even says hi when he sees you in public unlike some others. Tests aren't easy but nothing in CHEM is ever easy!
Very cynical, needs to focus on his clarity during lecture, doesn't come off as extremely insightful, and he's a sappy Steelers fan. He's got the most horrible tests in the world, its almost like he is trying to be funny with that too, don't take him...

If you want to learn Chemistry take this class
I am a student at WVU and am majoring in chemistry. I have had many chem teachers but Schraf is by far the best. He has messy handwriting but is an excellent teacher.
Dr. Schraf is a great lecturer. He is quite possibly the only Professor to make chemistry funny and interesting. His tests and quizzes are hard, but not unreasonable. He covers all of the material in class, but asks really hard questions about it.
The best chem. teacher i have had. he makes things easy to understand and fun. tests aren't easy but reasonable. if you do the problems he gives you and study, you will be fine. he is really funny too. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM.
Pretty funny guy, tries to make things as easy as possible. The class was quite fun, but the whole quiz system is ridiculous. Quite helpful in office hours, although I only went once.
Schraf knew what he was doing and always made it fun. He always had a positive attitude and related things like football and tricycles so it was esier to understand.
He's a really excellent teacher. If you dont understand something he will put it into very basic terms. From comparing tricycles and wheels and frames to making a total idiot of himself getting up on the table and doing structures. I would recommend him to anyone.
He's an awesome professor!!!
very good prof
He was a very good teacher and he made learnin gthe subject fun and now I really like Chemistry.
Writes too many notes on the board, but other than that, he's a really good professor. Definately the best for 116. If you can find tests from previous semesters, they'll be almost the same as the tests you'll have in class.
He is the best chem prof. that you will ever make. If you are having trouble, take the time to go see him... He will keep helping you until you understand it. The examples he uses in class def. help alot. I would def. recommend him as a teacher for chem...I love chemistry now from taking his class.
He was a GREAT chemistry teacher! I loved him. Chemistry is a very hard class, but I got an A. Very good at explaining concepts. Love him!
Tests are hard as anything, but walked away with a C-
Best teacher I've ever had. Knows his material. Has a great personality. Really helpful during office hours. Tests and quizzes are just like old ones. Try to sit in the front--his writing is messy.
He's the best you can get for a Chemistry course. He is actually funny and I promise you will laugh daily. The course itself is tough but a good 10hrs of studying per test will get you an A.
tests/quizzes mostly like old ones. SIT IN FRONT OF CLASS HE WRITES VERY MESSY AND WON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO SAYS WRITE BIGGER! okay teacher not great. I am usually good in chem but still somewhat struggled to get a B, but it's hard material. he's helpful though
Very good teacher. He knows the material very well and has a very good way of bringing it down to a level that a non-chemistry minded student can understand. Tests can be hard, but it is only because the material is hard in 116. I've recommended him to everyone taking that class.
Very good professor. Tests are often difficult, but chemistry is a difficult subject. Schraf explains the material well. I have learned more in this class than any other college level class
Schraf is a real funny guy and loves sports. The problem is that chemistry at WVU is a **** with whatever prof you get. Therefore I would recommend Shraf.
He is a great teacher! He loves sports and often incorporates them into class. Tests are pretty hard but hey chemistry is hard. I reccommend him to every who is going to take chemistry. One word of advice make sure you turn your cell off before class because if it rings during class he makes u do push ups.
very strict, go to him for help and he will help you though
VERY hard tests... he anticipates mistakes you might make and puts those as possible answers. VERY entertaining in class! Although sometimes I think it gets in the way of learning (which is awesome untill you have to take a test). Plan on using your books a lot.
talks fast and has the tendency to go off subject. . . really bad. his tests are massively hard. Nice guy, but could be easier
Schraf is a great teacher, he takes the time in class to go over the problems anyone might have, he gets the class involved, and he's extreamly helpfull if you utilize his office hours. YOU NEED TO STUDY in this class, but if you do it pays off. This is definetly not a prof. you can cram for. Also, dont be late, or he'll make you do pushups.
very good at explaining stuff but his tests are tough
He's an amazing chem prof, the best I've had. He knows how to relate to students. He keeps class interesting w/ humorous stories, somehow related to the material. His tests are difficult, but no more than any other chem test. He does include likely mistakes in his test answers, but that's only to make sure u know what you're doing. Take his class!!
This man is so funny. You will have to study but he makes this class fun. I hate Chemistry but I had fun here.
Awesome teacher! Will help you. Funny guy. Don't let your cell phone ring or you have to do push-ups. Be prepared to study, but its not to bad. I had him at 8:30am and still enjoyed the class. I would definetly take him again.
He's really funny, but his tests are really hard. He anticapates the mistakes you'll make and puts the answers that you think are right, but you're doing wrong as multiple choice answers.
Great!
He was very tough.
I thought Schraf was an awesome chemistry teacher. He really knows how to relay the message to his students.
He's funny! BUT- he spends way too much time in class cracking jokes and b.s.ing you, and not enough time teaching you chemistry. He gives you like ONE example problem for each concept, and its usually a simple one. His tests are ridiculously tricky, and basically, you are on your own for this class. I WOULD NOT recommend this teacher!
Great Teacher! Chemistry is a difficult subject, but I was able to really pay attention in his class. His test are sometimes a little tricky, but not hard at all if you study
GOOD.
Very difficult class, but I learned a hell of a lot. Entertaining in his approach to dry/unexciting material.
funny guy - he teaches fine but the set up of chem 110 at wvu is really weird and it makes it harder than it has to be...on the quizzes answer the BOTTOM part FIRST!!! even if it means u dont get to finish the top. u have unlimited times to get the top - the bottom part is ur grade - i didnt figure this out til mid sem.
awesome
Definitely one of the best teachers I've had so far at WVU. If you want to learn something he makes it very easy to. I'd definitely recommend him.
SUPER FUNNY!
Excellent teacher. Makes going to class fun, but his tests are a bit difficult.
Schraf is a great teacher, and he makes Chemistry interesting. Even if you don't enjoy it, he often stops to tell a funny story or something. It's a nice break, when things get really difficult. He test aren't bad, but you need to be prepared. I got A's on the first test, then thought i was gonna do great, but i didn't, so be prepared.
Very funny guy, got us laughing and interested even though it was 8:30AM. Explains everything very thoroughly. I barely cracked the book because his notes were so good. He even gives out little extra note sheets when you hit really important concepts, even though it's a huge class. I'd definitely recommend him.
He's a great teacher, no doubt. Funny, helpful, and class is fun to go to because of his personality. I had him almost 5 years ago, and looks like he's still keeping true to his ways!
I've been in college 3 years and I have to say he is the funniest guy ive been around. His classes really were fun and not too hard. He will answer any question and will help you whenever you need it. Very easy to understand, I really really recommend taking him. This class will brighten your day, he is FUNNY
Great teacher! He always related to real life so you stayed interested during the class and it helped to understand things better. Really funny, tells a lot of jokes. I wish I could of had him for 116! Just make sure you do all the homework and study the notes!!!
Shraf is awesome! He'll help you all the way. You just have to be willing to try. He keeps things entertaining as well!
really gets into details. explains things in terms of real world...
I took him for 110 and doing the same for 115 truly a great teacher
Schraf is a great teacher. he answers questions, is available after class, responds to e-mails, and very entertaining. my favorite day was when he stood up on his desk to demonstrate what a chemical formula looked liked. He is funny and he knows his stuff.
this guy is hilarious, he will keep you awake and paying attention so u actually learn, make sure to turn your phone off because if it rings you will be doing push ups in front of the class. go to class, study some, ace the class.
He was and is a great teacher. When taking notes he will say stuff like "i like this problem" star it and it will mostly turn up on the test. You can get a feel for whats going to be on the test from his notes. STUDY know the stuff and what is in the notes and you will do fine.
He's hilarious. Keeps class interesting and fun, and actually makes you want to attend. He's always available during office hours and eager to teach you. Make sure you do go to class though, the class goes fast. Also, this class requires a lot of studying, so be prepared.
very nice guy. pretty good at explaining the material. he will try to trick you on exams, making them way harder than they should be. the homeworks are helpful, but WAY too long
Never fell asleep in his class! He is so funny, always making jokes during his lessons. He is a very good teacher. Eplains lessons very well, and is always available during office hours. Seriously, best professor!
Extremely funny but he almost always keeps you late after class. Sit in the front, his writing is horrible. Do the suggested problems in the book that he assigns before every exam.
Possibly the best Chem teacher at WVU. He kept the class funny and interesting. I would not have even gone to this class if it was not for Prof. Schaf, because the material was too easy and was more or less like busy work than anything. As Schraf would say Go to class, Do the homework, pass the required questions. Thats all you have to do to pass.
I really love going to his class because he is such an entertaining teacher. He keeps you interested and engaged in the material. His class isn't a cake walk, but if you go to class and study hard you'll do fine.
Not really my favorite prof. but he is a very good teacher, although he often strays from the material. But definitely a good teacher.
A great teacher but you have to go to class and do everything he says. It really works and makes the class feel easy.
Great teacher. The Class is really difficult. I studied alot and still got a C+. Schraf is a very entertaining teacher but like others said he does stray from the topic. Oh and Turn your phone off. Unless you like to do push ups in front of 200+ people.
If you are a freshman, and if you've never taken a WVU Chemistry course, I do not recommend him. He's unreasonably hard and spends most of the class trying to be funny (even though he rarely is). His writing is terrible, and his tests aren't fair (20 questions-missing 1 brings grade downt). This class caused the most stress for me first semester
I just commented on this teacher (12/07/10), and for some reason, its showing it as being a "Good Rating". I didn't mean for that, so I'm fixing it...he caused me unbelievable stress first semester, and I would not recommend him to anyone. If you don't want to suffer, don't take him. That's coming from a WVU Honors student, too
he knows what he is talking about and can *usually* teach it. tells many quirky stories that often make his manditory attendence class runover, and dont dare talk to a friend or get a phone call. tests are very tricky and he gives few study guides
Schraf is a really funny guy and is always cracking jokes in class. He understands college kids priorities. His tests are very challenging, so attendance is a must if you want to do well. His handwriting is very sloppy, so be sure to sit in the front. Overall Schraf is a cool guy, but i don't think i would take another class taught by him.
He keeps you interested most of the time during class but has some of the hardest tests I've seen. If you really want a challenge or if chemistry is your field of study I'd go with Mr.Shraf but if not you'll just be stressing yourself for no good reason.
Way too hard for a freshman level class. I'm an Honors student, and this class killed me. He wastes class cracking useless jokes, writes very sloppy, and seems to let us think we have no hope in improving. Like with our tests, he would say "That'll pretty much be your grade in the class..." Yeah, he sucks. Avoid him
Took Schraf for Chem 115. Likes to be funny, keeps class light-hearted. I agree the tests are deliberately tricky, but he tells you EXACTLY what to expect. Class is doable, ended up with almost 100%. Careful attention to detail is mandatory or tests can be overwhelming. Good teacher, great guy, would recommend him to anyone.
I don't understand why Schraf has a bad rating. He is a really good teacher. His tests are tricky but you have to know the basics or higher end classes will be even more challenging.
VERY FUNNY GUY, tries to keep class intersting. I had Battin for 1st semester and him 2nd semester Chem 115 is VERY difficult. His test are ticky and the average is usually a 60%. Very Hard class this is the class that makes you think twice about your major. The proffesors aren't bad especially Schraf..the only compliant is his test too tricky.
He is EXTREMELY hard for freshmen level chemistry class. I had to re-take the course. Yes, he is very funny but if you aren't understanding he still moves on and really only seems interested in those that are doing really well.
Best chem lecturer Ive ever had. I wish he taught every level of chemistry. He's straight up about his class being hard, but he's very helpful.
His class is hilarious. He always keeps you laughing and interested. I do notttt like chemistry, but he definitely kept my attention the whole semester. Tests aren;t tricky, if you know what your doing youll get it right. Attendance is mandatory, if you miss more than 3 classes you drop a letter grade. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone!
Loved him. Although I struggled in the class, he made it fun and I have actually grown to really like chemistry :O It's mostly math, and that's probably why I struggled. Go to class and give the work some committment. Do the problems in the workbook along with the online homework and You should do fine.
Immature guy. His confidence is not backed up by his teaching ability. Self centered.
Honestly the worst teacher I have ever had. He's not willing to help you. He is super stubborn. The only good thing about him is that he is super funny.
If you take chemistry 110, take him. Yes, he does joke around but he does a good job explaining things. I had to learn 15 weeks of chemistry in 3 weeks and while that sounds daunting, I got an A in his class (I've never had chemistry before too). Just go to class, pay attention, and don't be afraid to ask questions and you will do fine.
Mr.Schraf is a great teacher. I dont know why he is getting bad ratings. Yes the tests are hard but hes upfront about it. If you go to class, ask questions, and do your homework you will be just fine. He is also extremely funny and keep class interesting.
I have him right now. Tests follow the notes. DEF do practice problems in the book. A on the final = A in the class. Makes jokes, keeps class interesting. Prepares you for 115. Look forward to going to each class. He's there to help you, gets to know you and helps you with anything. DEF recommend him for 110
Such a great professor, and a great guy. I learned a lot, and his tests are pretty easy. As long as you go to class and pay some level of attention, you should have no issue in this class. I was just sad he doesn't teach 116.
Mr. Schraf was an excellent teacher. He showed complete mastery of his material and is passionate when teaching it to his students. He teaches in a way that can be understood easily. He is funny as can be, which lightens the mood on stressful days.
I loveee his class! He's a very eccentric guy, always makes jokes, makes chem interesting, shows complete mastery of the subject. Has a great way of making analogies to connect a concept to something you could understand more easily, and he's always willing to help in any way possible. I always look forward his class. I'd recommend to any student!
Schraf is my favorite professor I've ever had. As you can tell with the other comments, it's either you love him or hate him. I promise you that if you take the time to talk to him outside of class and go to ELSI, you will get an A no problem. He tries if you do. He makes lots of jokes but is a very kind person once you get to know him.
Mr.Schraf makes chemistry fun and enjoyable,he've got his own technique of teaching which makes it easier for the students to understand the topic.
CHEM is hard no matter who you get b/c you have to KNOW the material, cant just memorize. He is probably the best professor in how he jokes around but still gets you as prepared for tests as possible.. but if you don't put in 100% effort in AND out of class you'll struggle no matter what.
I had him my freshman year and I loved his class! He was funny and got side tracked sometimes but he is a great teacher. He was always more than willing to help but only if you are helping yourself too.
Schraf is the best teacher I've ever had. He's hilarious and uses humorous analogies to help you understand the subject matter. The class moves at a great pace and he makes the time fly by with great energy and master of the subject. He's a must take for 110.
awesome teacher! He's very stubborn- I dont know why people complain about that. Chem is demanding & he does a great job preparing you for future classes. Extremely helpful-he stayed 2 hrs late in his office hours to make sure I understood. If you take the time to care about the class, he will take the time to help you. Highly recommend!!
Schraf is a great teacher and makes everything as simple as he can and gives you great, easy to understand, real life metaphors to make understanding easier. He's super helpful when you don't understand, but doesn't deal with nonsense. Totally awesome teacher. I loved having him and he made class so much fun and so interesting.
Mr. Schraf is a great teacher, he always makes sure that people are understanding concept and is clear with what will be on tests and quizzes. Mid term was a piece of cake, but final was much more difficult. If you go to class and do the homework you will do well in this class.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!
If you take this class with this professor be prepared to listen to 35 minutes of useless, overdrawn metaphors and 15 minutes of average teaching. I found him to be unprofessional and VERY condescending. I got an A, sure, but help me he did not. His learning demand does not match his level of teaching.
I had to drop out of this class first semester because of some personal stuff but Schraff offered to let me sit through classes so when I retook the class I would do well. He is the best teacher I have had and I really learned a lot He's super funny and energetic. If you need help, GO SEE HIM, he will help you.If he teaches a 115 class, take it!
He is always willing to help! Whether is be chemistry or personal, he will talk to you and help you find the answer! During class, he makes it extremely fun and does his best to try to put it in as many ways as possible to help all students understand! He is absolutely amazing!
90% of the things said in class are off topic. If you're anything like me, then this makes it difficult to pay attention at all. His quizzes are small (miss 1, you get a B) and petulant. They are divided into 2 sections, the top is competence (miss 1 and fail but must retake) and the bottom is your grade out of 5.
One of the best professors ever he is the reason why i understand chem 115 really well his methods help a lot. the only reason I got B is because i didnt study for the final. easy A class but needs a lot of work like any other science class
I loved this class! I took the 15 week class over a 3 week period, so the material was packed in every day. He made every lesson relate to real life in some hilarious way. He was my first Chemistry teacher and I didn't have any trouble learning from him. I earned an A after a reasonable amount of work. Would recommend him!
Chem 110 is very easy, but Mr. Schraf made the class bored and he did not teach very well. After quiz 2 my total points were 2 out of 10, every class he told me you have to drop the class because you will not pass it, but i did not listen to him and i worked hard and i got B and passed the class. Never listen to him.
I had to take this class twice and had Dr. Vannatta the first time. Dr. V was good but Schraf was a lot better at giving examples and applying the material to real life. He really cares if you get the material but gets annoyed if you make silly mistakes. Overall, he was a great professor and would take him for chem 115 if it were possible.
He relates everything to real life in some funny way. He doesn't just stand up there and lecture, it actually makes you laugh, and makes you try to enjoy Chemistry. He is more than willing to help you in office hours, and he makes sure you understand material, but ONLY if you try on your own.
Strafe makes passing the class next to impossible. Each week a quiz is given on the previous week's material. If you fail the quiz you can retake it during his office hours. Generous right? WRONG! In order to ASK to take a retake you have to wait in a line for an hour or more! Forget about getting help personally from Schraf during office hours.
The best teacher I ever had a class with, so funny and makes you so interested in chemistry which pushes you to do well. If you listen in class, you will enjoy it and learn so much in a easy and fun way. He cares so much about his students, more than they care about their grade. If you listen in class and do the work, they will definitely get an A.
There is a test every week on the previous week's material. Just pay attention and you'll do fine. He does lots of examples which helps you learn the material a lot better. Would recommend to anyone taking Chem 110.
Schraf is a joker, but doesn't mess around when it comes to his students paying attention. Don't go in thinking you can be on your phone and not pay attention because you'll learn real quick that's not how he rolls. If you don't have much knowledge about chemistry, he's def you're go to guy. Great teacher, I would recommend him to anyone.
Schraf makes class interesting, because we all know chem can be boring. If you pay attention and DO YOUR PRACTICE QUESTIONS in the book, you will without a doubt be fine. Even if you don't know much about chem, he would be your go to guy.
Great lectures but very specific on how he wants the answers on his tests.
He talks down to chem 110 students like we are idiots. Constantly dumbing down the material to the point it doesn't make any sense because he doesn't think our tiny brains can handle actual chemistry. Avoid if possible!
Schraf's class was a major part of my first semester. He teaches life lessons and funny ways to remember the material. By coming to class and participating in discussion you can pass easily, but you have to pay attention and do a good bit of practice problems to get an A. Do practice problems, watch the videos, and do make up test ASAP
Schraf is easily the best professor I have ever had. He makes lectures so interesting, which for Chem isn't always the easiest. He will help you as much as you need, he wants you to succeed! The tests aren't easy, so you'll have to spend a lot of time out of class studying and preparing. I would take him for every Chem class if he taught them all!
Schraf is great. He's so helpful and would help you if you need help. Tests are little bit tricky. You need to be very accurate on the tests because even if you have a simple mistake, the whole answer would be wrong. If you practice regularly and attend the class you'd pass easily.
Schraf is very entertaining, but also stays focused and uses every story as a way to teach the lesson for you to remember it. The quizzes should be treated as exams.
He relates things you learn in class to real life situations so that you remember the information. If you pay attention and show effort he will like you. If you sleep or your phone goes off in class he will probably humiliate you. Overall good teacher and would take again.
Schraf was completely awesome for both of my Chem 110 classes was was so willing to help. He's very personable and really funny, which helps to make the material easier to retain. Overall he was an awesome teacher with a really obvious passion for what he does.
Great lectures. Cares about his students.
Very very specific when grading
Warning: start his classes out on a good note. There are very minimal points in his classes so if you lose points right of the bat there is almost no way to get an A. He is an awesome teacher and cares about his students. Make sure you read the syllabus and do the problems in the book. Always show up to class to get the coveted 1 bonus point.
BEWARE, you must get a good jump in this course. There is only 56 points available in the class so those 5 point quizzes really add up. He teaches you exactly what you need to know for the test, so as long as you take notes and show up, you are golden.
He's really funny and nice, but his exams shouldn't be as hard as they are. It's almost impossible to pass if you fail one quiz.
Schraf is by far the funniest and best professor I've had here. Make sure you aren't on your phone in class or you have to do 5 push-ups. Gives lots of examples to make sure you understand. If you want a good grade, make sure you do the homework problems in the book. If you don't understand something, immediately go to office hours and/or tutoring.
Amazing professor, but super hard class!!! Schraf is really good at explaining hard concepts, especially if you're bad at math. Attendance is ABSOLUTELY mandatory, since he drops a letter grade if you miss more than 1 lecture. There are only 56 points possible for 110A, so don't slack off in the beginning thinking you can make up for it later.
this guy has great lectures and he understands its hard to stay with him all class. he will periodically go off topic to keep your attention. also he is homework heavy theres a quiz every week.
DO ALL OF THE HOMEWORK OR YOU WILL FAIL.
Best chemistry professor available.
Best Chem professor I have ever had. He relates the material to real life to help us understand. He constantly is making jokes, which makes the class much more enjoyable. He definitely cares about his students. Must attend class, heavy material and a lot of memorizing! Study regularly, not just the night before the exam and you should do fine!
Hilarious guy. I like him as an individual, not as a teacher. He really doesnt come off as an daily approachable teacher. Sometimes he gets angry when you ask questions in class.
He does not believe in study guides or extra practice. He gets off topic frequently and we were far behind other CHEM 115 students. The homework had nothing to do with what we learned in class, but that was all he would give us to study. I would not take him again.
Definitely choose him if you are torn between chemistry professors. He can be a little rude sometimes, but its all out of humor and kidding around. He is very smart and knows what he is talking about in his lectures. Quizzes can be hard sometimes, but he posts videos online on how to do problems that will be on each quiz. Definitely take his class!
schraf is one of the best profs iv ever had. he genuinely cares about his students and expects nothing but greatness out of us. if you fail this class you just do not care because schraf provides you with all the necessary materials (great textbook/ lecture videos) to get an a! TAKE HIM
Worst chem115 professor ever! his notes are totally a mess and you'll realize it when you study for your test. The first test average was 60% something, the second test MORE THAN HALF OF THE CLASS FAILED IT! I think he should stick to chem 110 and never teach chem 115 again! moral of the story, he's rude and you'll regret it If you take him
Does not post any current grades. makes stereotypical cultural references. wastes class time calling out students for phones and talking. belittles students for asking questions. Gets in peoples personal space when trying to explain concepts. Made rude remarks about Italian culture.
!!!AVOID!!! To elaborate, he assigns homework that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with your lectures and it WILL NOT HELP YOU! His exams are WAY harder than other chem 115 professors and he gives weekly quizzes. He offers no practice exams, reviews, or extra credit for after you fail his exam. His notes and handwriting are sloppy. great guy, bad prof
As long as you try and take his course seriously Schraf will be a great professor. He cares about his students and wants them all to do well. He is a tough grader but fair and understanding. He is also always available outside of class for help. He has helped me do well in this course and has also helped me with my scheduling and other classes.
You have to study for this class. It is very tough and you must study every single night. If you do not give this class your all, you will fail just like 40% of the class does. Do all of the practice problems and make sure to watch his YouTube videos, they are very helpful. Tough class, but give it your all and you'll get an A.
Uses humor to connect to the topics that he teaches, which makes it easier to remember certain concepts. Very funny and interesting. Hates cellphones.
He is a very good teacher, cares about your learning. I liked being in his class and he helped me a lot throughout the semester to understand the class material.
Shraf is crude, aggressive, Incredibly insensitive towards others, and is minimally accepting. His go-to response whenever you have an issue is "you didn't study". Despite your hardest efforts in the class, it is ultimatly up to luck and his mood if you will even pass the class. He will treat you like an idiot if you ever make a simple error. SO NO
Hardest class I've taken and I'm a junior who gets As in tough math and physics classes. He is rude and makes fun of people in class. He made fun of me for scribbling in my notebook while he rambled on about a stupid wallet. How about you teach instead of ramble. Also give practice tests like other professors!!
Really great teacher! Funny, makes a lot of jokes in class. takes almost all lessons at some point and puts them into a real world perspective. When you need help he is always around to explain things, and does a very good job of breaking things down to assure you learn it. He actually cares about you learning so you do have to work for your grade.
Difficult class, but makes Chem 115 a lot easier. If you can pass his 110 you can pass anyones 115. The lectures are long, and they get really boring. WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING THAT IS ON THE BOARD AND DO ALL OF THE HOMEWORKS! If you study and get help on things that you wont understand you'll pass.
He makes chemistry a little less boring, and more understandable by giving real life ex. He is INTIMIDATING, but after finally forcing myself to go to his office hours I learned that he is actually very friendly, understanding, and helpful. If I wouldn't have attended his office hours, I would not have passed the class. So go, he's nice I promise!
Schraf is awesome; he is super funny and you will learn a ton but you have to do the work. Its almost impossible to pass if you do not do the work. The class is honestly easy if you put in the homework to do the homework and occasionally go see him for help
Occasionally offensive. Shouts alot. Frequently goes off topic and calls out students. Kind guy though. Chem 110 pass rate is dictated by a handful of quizzes and one final test so no real opportunitiess to bring up a grade.
Mark Schraf is the best chem teacher I have ever had! He teaches through real life scenarios, which makes chemistry so much easier to understand.
Doesn't seem to care about students.
Very knowledgeable about chemistry, without a doubt. However, there isn't very much room for error. You literally need to be perfect to succeed. He doesn't give a practice quiz like the others. He comes off as rude a lot as well. Don't raise your hand in class. Don't miss a class. No phones. Dedicate ALL of your time to this class. No extra credit.
Hes a very funny guy but can be a bit of a bully sometimes. He calls people out constantly and doesnt really make you want to ask questions. You have to work to pass this class even with it just being prep chem. His teaching is good and explains things in real life examples which are helpful. The grading scale is tough and based on only quizzes.
Chem 110 was my first college chem class Ive ever had so I have nothing else to really compare it so. Hes good at teaching things in class but sometimes gets really off topic, yells and makes jokes that sometimes arent appropriate. Hes intimidating and hard to ask questions to however he seems like one better chem professors at WVU.
Chem 110B is loads better than 110A, so definitely make sure you pass it! Schraf is intimidating during class, but he is always nice and willing to help during his office hours or during the CLC hours. DO THE HOMEWORK!!! Or you will not pass, hands down. This class is NOT easy even though it is a prep class, but it will make you 100% ready for 115.
gives you everything you need to know in class. Study problems similar to the ones in class. If youre struggling, see him during his office hours. Hes much more approachable outside of class and is very helpful. Overall good teacher.
Professor Schraf is awesome! He genuinely wants his students to know what they are doing. He is always available to help you if you do not understand something. Quizzes almost every week.
Really funny and outgoing professor. Cares for his students and wants you to succeed. If you take him, I would suggest doing practice problems to study for the quizzes and always go to office hours for help as he is very good at explaining concepts 1on1.
Schraf is good guy and he cares about his student. People that fail don't do the work bottom line... it's not that hard. It prepares you for Chem115 well and teaches you to work outside of class.. DO YOUR WORK and you'll be fine. He is super nice 1 on 1.
Schraf is very entertaining. I appreciate his approach to the material (Puts things into more metaphors/understandable terms). The only grades you receive are for quizzes but he goes over the types of problems you'll see on them in class. WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN AND WORK THROUGH THE BOOK PROBLEMS. Visiting him in his office was very helpful.
The Worst.
He is a very good teacher. Super smart! He wants you to pass. But he is overall kind of rude. He calls people out and makes fun of them. He says the word retarded a lot.... you need to do the homework to pass.
Chem 110 is hell, not because the material is hard but there is not room for error. Mark Schraf is a really great chem instructor he knows what he is doing, sometimes he could get on your nerves but he is really 1on1 go to his office hours and you wont regret it. Also chem 110B was a lot easier for me even tho its more chemistry than 110A
I thought he was really cool. People say he's mean when you use your phone. So don't use your phone? It's disrespectful. Failed chem 115, went back, did 110 with schraf, and now repeating chem 115 is easy. If you don't pay attention in class, you won't pass. The class is tough, if you focus you'll be good. His online videos are really helpful too.
i could not pass chem110 because of the final it was hard even though i was well prepared for it lots of quiz's what i really hate is that i understand the material and the concepts but he wont give any credits for writing the right formulas if you write only one wrong number you will lose a point so its kinda unfair i didnot like his teaching
Good choice for chem110. I thought he was weird or crazy at first. He can be rude sometimes, but he is hilarious and very good at teaching. Do the practice problems in the book and/or go to tutoring when you need it and you'll be fine. He will know if you do not do the work in the book. What's taught in lecture is what is on the tests.
I do not recommend him in the slightest!! He would spend half the class trying to make jokes and going off on useless tangents. He would berate anyone who tried to ask a question and would give practically no time to take the quizzes. When it came time to grade said quizzes, there would be no partial credit. If one number was off, it was all wrong!
Prof Schraf is intense & hilarious during lectures. If you are uptight you won't like his class, but he makes himself look silly and has fun for your learning, and he really wants you to succeed! PRACTICE IS KEY in this class if you want to pass, and DON'T be afraid to see him for help! He is such a kind human and much more chill outside of lecture
He doesn't care about students and waste half class time to make silly jokes. There is no time to do quizzes. He says the book is important to practice problems but I did not buy it and passed the class. If there is another option take it but if not just focus on the class and study hard from the beginning.
Professor Schraf is 50/50 on being a great teacher. Since we moved online & have YouTube videos to watch, its a lot easier because you can skip when he goes on a tangent about irrelevant things. He counts the whole problem wrong if even if all your work is correct- no half credit. Hardly any time for test taking. Given 20mins (IF THAT.) Horrible.
Unable to stay on topic, dumbs down concepts to the point of no return, and spends more time ranting/yelling/trying to be funny then teaching. His handwriting is hardly legible and he often refuses to explain concepts he believes we should already know. He is also very unapproachable and tends to belittle students for asking questions.
This is a hard class. There isn't a whole lot of points to go around so every quiz and test matters. Repetition is key. You don't get a lot of time to complete quizzes so you need to be good at doing the material quickly and more importantly, correctly. The video lectures are what saved me. Watch as many of them as you can and take good notes.
Schraf is a half decent/funny guy and an awful professor. Truly does NOT care about you or your learning. He wastes time in class, goes too fast, hates explaining things because he thinks you're stupid, gives NO time for quizzes. Quizzes are only 3 questions so if you miss one you immediately fail and have to go out of your way to redo a small quiz
Moved at a ridiculous pace, not good at explains concepts, doesnt tell you how to get the right answer if you get something wrong.
Worst professor. Avoid at all cost.
Schraf wasn't a bad professor, but the way he taught wasn't my learning style. It was hard to understand what he was saying because he didn't use the actual terms to understand, got off topic because "our brains can't handle too much information at once" (wrong), and his videos seem verbatim of what he's going to say in class but they're helpful.
class was very disorganize. He would go on a lot of tangents about nothing. He never gave good feedback on quizzes. I learned a lot better from the videos he posted and then he stopped posting them. Me and multiple other students that I know have gone to him for help an he did not help at all. I could barely understand what he taught it was awful.
Do not take him. He is the hardest chem110 prof there is, take Betsy. He'd spend 2 days if we were lucky going over a topic, and then he'd give us a 20 minutes for a 40 minute quiz. He rambled more times than I can count during lectures. He'd also make you feel stupid if you asked a question. Your grade is based off of just quizzes and exams.
He seemed really cool in the beginning but he only gets worse. He makes fun of you for getting things wrong and makes you feel stupid when you ask a simple question. The only grades are on quizzes and exams and doesnt give helpful feedback on them. Avoid taking this class if you can. Unfortunately he is the only professor that teaches this course.
Schraf seemed like a genuine guy at the beginning of the semester but quickly became one of my least favorite professors. He is very passive-aggressive. He likes to yell, & rambles on unrelated topics. He calls on random students & embarrasses them when they answer incorrectly by making a joke out of them. Dont take his class unless you have to.
Schraf is an interesting guy who makes an interactive learning experience. He was my first chemistry instructor for chem110 during the fall semester of my freshman year. This class gave me respect for chemistry and the attention to detail. The hours you put in studying and learning material for this class will greatly benefit you in chem 115.
I would not recommend taking CHEM 110 in general, especially with this professor. He takes up class time with stories and gets sidetracked very easily. The only grades given are from quizzes, which he gives you little time to take. Dont suggest whatsoever.
Never ask questions. If you emailed him about any questions you'd get ridiculed and torn down. On several occasions, he asked if I was even reviewing the material I was asking questions on and mocked me if I didn't understand something. He was ok in class, but awful outside of class times.
This professor is easily one of the worst I've had during my time here at West Virginia University. I have never spent so much time studying for a class for the outcome to be this bad. He will ridicule you for asking questions, and will not meet with you face to face. Even with tutoring and learning the material on my own time I was completely lost
Teaches decently well, however, grade solely dependent on quiz gradesquizzes for which you receive inadequate time to take. Addedly, very little points in the course so that each point matters heavily, and he does not give you half credit for a question even if the work had been correct and only the answer was wrong. No extra credit in the course.
Very rough class...
HILARIOUS guy. There is a lot of outside work and the class was pretty difficult for a CHEM110. Be prepared to study for HOURS on end..
This guys seems to think it is his job to be the gatekeeper for certain degrees. He does a piss poor job of explaining the basics of chemistry, and makes no effort to help. He doesn't seem to understand the nature of the student/teacher relationship at the college level. He doesn't want to teach, but rather judge for the benefit of his own ego.
First of all, he doesn't necessarily teach, but rather gives examples of things and then talks about it for a couple seconds and moves on instantly. He goes WAY too fast and expects everyone to get the material. Can barely understand his writing too. He seems like a pretty cool person, but as a professor I would stay clear of taking him.
degrades students for not knowing answers to questions, expects you to know them off the top of your head. calls people out by name. lectures are impossible because his writing is scribbles. get a tutor.
Most belligerent professor I have ever had. Consistently belittled students attempting to be funny. When I went to ask a question after class he yelled at me for not understanding it (yet wonders why no one asks questions). While a master in the field of chemistry he has no idea how to explain it to someone whose not a chem wiz.
He is great! I took this class in the summer in 3 weeks and felt like I throughly understood the material. He did very well at explaining subjects and giving examples that you'd understand.
Schraf is kinda intolerable. He's rude, yells at kids when they ask questions about the material. And this is right after he says not to be afraid to ask questions. He's straight up mean. Makes smart comments towards you about things that don't even relate to the class. He veers off-topic from material and then it's our fault we're failing.
I learn more looking back at my notes from 110 than I do from his class. He gets so off topic in class that he doesn't even cover everything that's on the exams. When he actually does teach, he basically just goes over example problems faster than you can write them down. Don't take Schraf if you want to pass.
The rudest professor ever! Anyone will tell you to do what ever you can do to avoid taking his class. He is just down right mean to his students as he frequently calls us "stupid" for just asking a question. If he says something will not be on an exam, it probably will be. He is intimidating and a bad professor.
Hardest classes ever took. Passed 110 with A, currently failing 115. Only grades exams and quizzes. Be littles you in office hours. Teaches new stuff the day of exams. Running behind schedule give you a packet on the topic and expected to learn it on your own. Be prepared to teach yourself the topics and receive no helpful feedback.
This classes success is really determined by you. You go to class, you have a better understanding of the homework and quizzes. However, he does rush through topics very often because he goes off topic during class. He posts lecture videos before every exam and I highly recommend watching those, they will help greatly. Good help outside of class.
makes offensive remarks in class. gets distracted, so he runs out of time to teach the topics on-time. his exams are always full of typos that make it impossible to complete and tank your grade. he will pressure you to drop the class or withdraw from the university, while also telling you that maybe "medical school isn't for you." super tough exams
I started out the semester thinking I was going to enjoy this class, but I had an awful time. He rushes through the hard stuff on exams while explaining the simple Chem 110 stuff in hour lectures. He wrote all the exams the night before. Extremely harsh grading on quizzes. Exams are multiple choice. Most of my class was failing.
Mr. Schraf is a great professor. I had him for both 110 & 115, got As in both classes. Chemistry is hard regardless of the teacher which is why he has mixed reviews. He is open to meet with you to go over tests/ questions but is also very blunt. Go to ALL lectures! And my best advice is to make sure he knows who you are by going to office hours!
Professor Schraf's class is difficult, and his lectures can be long-winded, but he does care about his students and I feel that he tried his best to be helpful and accessible. He posts videos on ecampus, and the textbook is free, and I strongly recommend using those resources as well. If you put in effort, you should get an A in this class
Funny guy who was straight forward in his lectures. You'll do well if you just pay attention and study. Homeworks are pretty easy and usually have multiple attempts. Puts grades in fast and will talk to you about what you need to do to succeed
The only reason I understood this class well was because of the fact that I took Chemistry classes beforehand. He seems to try but does not truly explain the difficult topics well enough for a complete beginner to understand. He does seem to be available to try to help and cares about people's grades even if he grades toughly on quizzes and exams.
Terrible professor
If you like outrageous teachers, this is your guy. He makes a lot of jokes which can make it more engaging but also harder to learn as he gets off topic. Expect to buy an $80 textbook, have 3+ hours of homework a week, and bi-weekly take-home quizzes. He was very helpful but direct so if you are sensitive, find another prof. Good guy, okay teacher.
This class was a rollercoaster, he would make jokes and call people out in the middle of class. He gives bi-weekly quizzes over the weekend and grades differently for each person even if they have the same answer. His lectures were long and it seemed as if I knew nothing as he trailed off topic and did not cover everything listed on the notes
Hilarious guy and gave extra points on quizzes for when you showed your work. Homework was very easy to accomplish but it does take a few hours. He replies quickly and answers questions through email. Overall, loved the guy and was able to finish the class with a 97.
Homework was given every week, quizzes every other week. does give extra credit Difficult grader/ gets off topic Called students out in the middle of lecture Not consistent with office hours Made students feel dumb for asking questions about the material Doesn't give final grade until the end of the semester Doesn't answer questions clearly
would not recommend..
Very funny gets off topic but relates to real world. Exams are hard but not if you attend lectures and get help when you need it
Class was asynchronous but the schedule is straightforward so it's easy to do the work at your own pace. He's communicative, encouraging, organized, and his recorded lectures were easy to understand. I'd previously tried to take chem with a different professor, but had to drop the class because she was SO awful. I'm so thankful to have had Schraf.
He can be a little condescending at times but overall a pretty good professor, took this class in 6 weeks so it was test and homework heavy but it was manageable. Goes over class time almost every time, a little disorganized and all over the place.
I took this course in three weeks during the summer. Coming into this course I was very nervous about it going too fast and the professor not being that good, but Mr. Schraf was fantastic. He was relatively high-energy and kept everyone engaged in the topics. He always explained things very well and would stop and make sure you understand.
Engaging but off-topic lectures. Lots of homework and quizzes, but extra credit and an approachable prof. I found unstuckstudy AI helpful for studying alongside the textbook.
I studied like crazy for this class and could never get above a C. I went to him for help multiple times but felt like I could never succeed. Tests are difficult and the only grades given are quizzes, exams, and homework. He gets off topic very easy and it's kinda hard to focus.
He was usually able to understand concepts in a clear and simple way, and he could easily make you laugh. The best way to prepare for his exams is to do a bunch of practice problems. He was always easily accessible through email and had a lot of office hours. He doesn't post videos to explain concepts, which will be annoying if you miss class
he always went over the end of class time by 5 minutes. his lectures were just him rambling about hypotheticals or "real-life" versions of chemistry scenarios. his lectures felt very long because he only covered 1 maybe 2 topics in a class and since he rambles a lot he stuffs all of the actual content in the last 10 minutes
He is a wild person. You either find him hilarious or very annoying. He yells a lot and blames his students a lot. This entire course comes down to exams. There is very little other points and the exams are stressful. if you get a low score on one you will probably not pass. He has had issues with past comments so be aware.
Chem 110 was pretty hard, but it helped me grow a lot in chemistry. Mr. Schraf gave great lectures and always made sure to answer a question if we had one. As someone who didn't even take chemistry in high school, I definitely feel more prepared for 115 because of Mr. Schraf!
Lectures are very entertaining and it is easy to pay attention. Responds to emails in a timely manner.
Mark is the goat. The only reason I did well was because I took chemistry before. His lectures are all over the place I will not lie and he gets very crazy at times. But bro gave me extra credit when I went to office hours crying about a breakup. I would def. get a beer with him ngl, but i would recommend take another professor, but ILY MARK.
mark is a funny guy but i could not actually learn anything from him, my grade was earned by teaching myself. easy class overall, only online assignments and attendance isn't a grade. exams ARE a grade, basically your whole grade, but he drops your lowest one. from someone who didn't take chem in high school, he is not a good way to learn basics.
