good sense of humor
his jokes are not funny.... don't take his course
he sucks
OMG, he is the worst math teacher I've ever seen!
He is very boring and stupid. I don't like him. He is a nutty professor! Yikes!
the class itself is boring material. The guy did come off a bit arrogant but then, it is a low level class, with a bunch of freshman that aren't respectful. I Think that would get to any over time, so all in all not that bad.
His TA's are better at teaching then he is. He is very anal too and confusing. He gets very annoying during lectures!
terrible teacher. He should quit, and save everyone else the time and energy. Class should be offered 3 times a week, because he moves way too fast. I dont Recommend anyone taking this class with him.
This teacher is a complete ass that had no personality. He doesn't give a**** about the students and isn't helpful. He is confusing and gives a ton of homework. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!
Very very picky grader
I definitely recommend taking it with the restitution. The class was fairly easy if you're decent at math and I thought Mr. Schreiner was funny in a quirky way and a good teacher.
Was extremely boring to listen to in class, moved too fast didn't explain material well enough.
Horrible teacher. The material in this class really isn't that difficult if you're decent at math, but he makes you so confused that by the time you leave class you dont even want to try. He grades picky, and doesn't cut you any slack on any thing. DONT take this teacher if you dont have to,in fact dont take this teacher if you have to. hes creepy
He is a terrible teacher, he knows the material and will remind you that he is better at it than you are, but he cannot teach it. Don't take this instructor.

Hes not bad. I know that he is very hard and can be confusing, but if you go to class like every day he is fine. If you refuse class that is your problem. I really did learn a lot! And even if he does not give out extra dredit the grade is based on a curve and relaly if you pay attention you will do fine. Im aweful at math and i did well.
This man can not finish a logical sentence to save his life. He goes off on tangents all the time and if you have ANY kind of problem paying attention EVER, avoid having this prof. He knows how to do this stuff in his head but can't put it into words that make sense. I vote NO on mark schreiner, thats for sure.
Twitchy guy, jumps around a lot & won't make any sense unless you are a good math student. Doesn't use a textbook (it's all online and edited by him UH OH is right). Is confusing and really kind of rediculous, very hard to keep track of what he's talking about... i would recommend another professor if you have the option.
I personally would recommend never, ever, EVER. ever. taking a class taught by this man. ever. I learned more about his wife than i learned about statistics, and i also learned how to form illogical sentences that never end, and i learned how to go off on tangents like it's my job. how this guy got the idea to be a teacherwho knows. he is terrible.
I am currently failing this class and am not that bad in math. He jumps around and does NOT explain anything. I read the reviews here and thought I would be OK, but do yourself a favor and take this class with someone else. Tons of homework, impossible exams, and lecture is two hours long of him ADD talking. HATE this class.
He is a very twitchy guy but he def. knows his stuff. Since he's used to teaching upper leavel stats he doesn't always remember to slow it down for the intro course If you aren't a good math student he may not be the prof. 4 you. However, if you can pay attention, attend class and READ the online material you should be able 2 deciphor his "notes"
This class is not bad AT ALL. He is really kind of funny, quirky and nice. He's pretty understanding if you have to miss class, but avoid missing class because you have daily assignments and you learna lot of stuff per class period. If you can, take this with a friend, actually pay attention in class, and do your assignments and you should get an A
The class is not difficult at all. The teacher is kinda nerdy and says "recall that" and "us statisticians" too much for his own good, but sometimes you get a kick out of him. He tends to over explain things making it more difficult to understand if you didnt understand it right away. The book has all the info though, so read a little if you need.
Great teacher, but if you don't have a recitation class, you need to go to every class period. Believe me, it will help you. Lots of homework and take home tests to boost your grade, and even some extra credit. I would recommend this class to someone who actually wants to learn this, you will definitely learn a lot of useful information.
This class was really difficult. It is possible to get a good grade but it takes a LOT of work out of class. Prof moves really fast and sometimes you have to teach yourself. Grading=very picky, tests=short but hard. LONG HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS for little credit. Must be willing to put in the work.
Horrible teacher...jumps around a lot and does'nt explain anything to you..be ready to teach yourself pretty much all of the material..i really dont think he should even be teaching this course because he was so bad
The only reason why you would need to attend class would be to turn in homework and take test. Otherwise if you just go to the labs you will do fine, that is if math is easy for you. Lectures are boring and the other students are very immature and just make fun of Mr. Schriener the whole time. Not a very good professor, but easy class.
I absoultely dreaded this class! I dont see how he has any good reviews. He seems 2b a nice man but he just can't teach. Teaching and knowing the materials are two different things...he's very knowledgeable but he cant spread the wisdom. 1 guy asked him to slow down and he just looked at him like he was dumb and continued going at the same pace.RUN
I really liked the class and thought it was really easy.. He was a little jumpy and sporadic and digressed but he was still a pretty decent teacher and just a total math lover. I really liked him I think everyone shouldn't be so harsh
Really boring lectures...i slept in most of them for the first test, but i stayed awake for the second. he's not the greatest teacher, i ask most of my questions during the lab. attend lab! overall, i'm doing good, but i have the only A in my recitation group right now...
Class is ridiculously hard. 5 people on my floor took this class the same time as I did. 4 of them were taking it for a 2nd time. A 1000 level math class should not have half the class failing it. He wont help you, is impossible to get a hold of, and frankly doesn't care about you as a student. Take this class at community college over the summer.
Prof. Schreiner is a very smart man and knows his material. Not a hard class to pass, if you attend class where attendance is taken randomly for points. Also do the homework, and attend th elab for the quizes and you should be fine. There is a tutor lab, office hours, course slides, and past tests given, and review excercises. No reason to fail!
He is awful and wears tennis shoes with his bow tie.
He is confusing and does not explain anything with clarity. He is overall not a good teacher.
Not a very good teacher. Assigns ridiculous amounts of homework every class, which he grades incredibly hard. I don't mind working, but this is just ludicrous.
Lots of useful information, really helps to go to class (especially lab). Schreiner is a very smart man, who does wear tennis shoes with his bowtie, but he does a great job of explaining problems and concepts.
He is a horrible teacher, he never explains anything and when he does it is not very helpful. Also the grading scale for this class makes no sense, the take home quizzes are worth more than the actual exams
awful. doesnt explain things very well, doesnt help students. tons of homework that does not apply to exams.once told my class that nobody will hire us cause we go to western instead of state or michigan.
worst professor i've had at wmu
This guy should not be teaching! he seems kind of smart, but is a horrible teacher, and didnt seem to care whatsoever whether anyone passed or failed. he would make students look stupid for asking any questions, and on several occasions was proved wrong by students.
Had him in a big lecture room than recitation on different days. The material isnt hard, but your grade is heavily weighed on tests. He assigned homework on top of online assignments, so you were forced to learn the material, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The recitations were almost pointless, except that quizzes were given out here.
I didn'y care for this prof, he was really confusing and I thought his class was pretty boring. But thats just me.. I wish I didn't have to take his class lol.. I studied hard for my final and managed to pass with a bc. Boy am I lucky I don't have to retake this class.. All I can say is good luck.
Very rude, and socially challenged. He makes very offensive statements, and makes very negative remarks. He is a complete idiot in my mind, and needs to learn how to talk to people.
worst professor that I've had at WMU so far. Very smart man and knows what he's doing but cannot teach it to the class at all. He takes long and confusing ways to get to answers that are simple.Spends the first part of class discussing pointless things and then in the last 20 minutes speeds through the material.
Very poor prof. Can't teach anyone math. I'm sitting in a lecture now and I honestly can't follow what he is trying to do. Very poor speaker. Also for some reason when I hear his voice I get annoyed and angry. Shouldn't be allowed to teach.
I have never had such an incompetent professor in my entire life. The man spends 50 minutes going over 1 problem and then assigns homework. Brush up on your self teaching skills, you'll need it. Have heard of countless people who have had to take this class multiple times, and the worst part is, he's the only professor here that does this course.
This professor seemed really annoyed when I asked him a question. He told me to talk to my TA, which i asked the same question to already and he had no answer. It wasn't that difficult of a question.. "When asking on a test, do you want exact or rounded answers or will it be specified?"
Worst teacher, assigns an absurd amount of work. Basically makes the math tutor a necessity due to teaching methods.
Unless you have excellent math skills and can comprehend what he is saying, you should be fine. He is never available to students and relies on all TA's to teach. He assigns a lot of homework but do it because it helps you understand. He goes to fast and doesn't explain every well. I wish you luck.
he has some random quizzes to check attendance, his t.a.s do most of the teaching, also there's a homework assignment due every class. his tests are really hard and a lot of the material is ten times harder than the homework and quizzes. really bad professor.
I don't think he is a horrible teacher, but he grades exams very very hard...so frustrating. He also moves quickly through lectures and sometimes makes things more confusing than they should be. If you're good at math, you'll be fine. If you're like me and are currently trying to improve, its a tough class at times.
Cool prof, better than helpful but high standards.
A very good teacher but grades papers very very tough
Gotta agree, clear but v tough grader
I deserved the grades he gave. Next time I will work harder.
Lets just say 76% of the people in his course right now are failing...
Terrible teaching style. Most of the class is failing or dropped...
Ace. You get only the grades you deserve, he isn't going to bribe or flatter you.
i spent all my summer doing HW and taking quiz! Its hard but u can do it!
He's tough but he's worth it, you have to work, no other way, but if you do, you get the grades.
Professor Schreiner is a kind of perfectionist and does not compromise. You have to work in his class and that is not bad. You only get the grade you deserve. He does not care whether he is popular or not only on teaching his subject. May just be me, but I am happy with this and cannot fault him.
everything a prof should be. if you dont work you will be weeded out. np for me.
Advice would be to study study study dude is pretty anal he says it himself. Your grade will be all over the place but stick it out and MAYBE you'll pass your first time. My class was full of students on their 2/3 time.
Study. Study. Study. No nonsense with this professor. If you're slack, you'll repeat, and repeat again. Nothing wrong with that. You get the message eventually. DO... NOT... SLACK!!!!
He puts the anal in analysis but he is good and if you put in the effort you get the grades and you get the math
if you dont put in the work, he wont give you the grades, but if you do work, youll be fine. You end up knowing the subject and thats the point isn't it?
Work work work work but you get rewarded in the end
Hard teacher, make sure you have a good TA. Study be prepared.
Hard labor but get rewarded, cannot to fault. Enjoyed.
Very kind and really tries to help but I get the feeling that sometimes he is not as clear as he could be, maybe it is just me.
I have no doubts that I learned a BIG amount from this class, yes I had to work hard but the reward was a lot of useful knowledge. Thank you Professor Shreiner.
He knows what he is talking about, but he tries to put you to sleep delivering that information. If you do the work, you'll learn the subject, and get a good grade.
ok Mr Shreiner can be a little repetitive (sp?) but he does it in order so he knows people really understood. Very good professor.
You absolutely -H-A-V-E- to work to get the grades with Shreiner but the feeling of accomplishment you then get is hard to beat. Way to go, Prof! aaa
(Finite Math Applications) Attendance is the name of the game. It helps that he's got excellent TAs too. Keep your ears open, do not fall asleep and above all DO ALL YOUR HOMEWORK. Then you will get an A.
"We statisticians and mathematicians," Schreiner is easily the worst prof at this university.
Any one who genuinely believes that M.Schreiner is any other than a very good professor would benifit from a visit to the counselor. He is clear and polite and never a boaster! Students like me feel lucky to have him. And unlike many he always grades the homework so you never feel you wasted your time doing it. His project was rewarding too.
If you are stupid this Prof is not for you. If you are not stupid you will soon realize he is as good as they come. He is as boring as a lightning bolt.
The cons are his tests are h-a-r-d and the HW can be time consuming. The prof some times comes across as being intimidating. He lectures as often as he teaches but he does not preach. It is clear that he cares plenty about the program. He does the job he is paid to do and he does it almost perfect. He knows the subject inside out. Full marks.
If it wasn't for my awesome TA (nick hardin) I probably wouldn't have done so good in this class. mr. schreiner spends way too much time talking about the most pointless things and half the time he's messing up. If you have to take his class I would try to get your lab with Nick Hardin if he's available. he was an awesome teacher and very helpful
Excellent in every way except a little boring when he gets on a pet hobbyhorse. He deserves credit also for his selection and instruction to TAs.
One time, Schreiner coughed into his microphone. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen.
Prof Schreiner for me is the role model of a dedicated and conscientious teacher and I could not give a -- if once he coughed into a mic or said "we statisticians and mathematicians". I got an A and I deserved it. And what gives with "1150"?
He is a very boring teacher who will easily put you to sleep in lecture. Also can be very hard to follow, but I do give him credit, he knows the subject inside and out.
Terrible
You MUST do all of your homework/take home quizzes/in class quizzes/exams in order to pass. Many students dropped at midterm. In lecture he shows how to do problems, which is one of the easiest ways to understand a hard subject. Overall a good teacher, helps to have a good TA. Lots of work, book is a must. Study guides/practice provided for exams
everything positive except please check your emailbox more frequent, thanks
GREAT PROF
Math is not my thing, but the material itself would not have been so bad had he been more clear in his organization of the notes/class. You must check email on an almost daily basis for new assignments. There are at least 4 assignments per week, several of which are reading. Its a very time consuming class for a general education course
I would NOT advise any one take this class with this prof. Speeds through lectures and TA's are not helpful. I already hate math but this prof made me hate it even more.
I worked my .... off in this class. Studied all time, went to reviews, completed every assignment. He is a horrible professor, unclear & confusing. As for his TA Mr. Hardin, no guidance. More concerned that his work load was heavier than us students. There is no excuse for a class this size to drop the ball on student comprehension.
He's gotta stop coughing into that microphone. Can barely understand what he's saying because of the coughing.
He can be boring and isn't so great at time management, but he knows what he is talking about (even if he occasionally stumbles over the words), I could usually learn what was happening after a lecture and some practice.
Excellent prof, can't understand how anyone can disagree.
Terrible teacher. Terrible class. To pass you really have to do good on your tests considering they are 82% of your grade. If you go to the tutor lab they really help
boring but i learned a lot
He struggles with time management, and his lectures are a bit slow, but otherwise he is a decent professor. He damands a lot of work, but it definitely pays off in learning the material. If you need extra help in the subject the tutor labs are great.
Cool, not boring at all
Would have given him '5' for easiness except for the coughing!!
Mark, you da man! High-five!
This class is GREAT. Prof Schreiner is friendly, kinda funny, quirky, nice, probably all been said before. He's understanding if you have to miss class. DO YOUR ASSIGNMENTS!
Terrible teacher with equally terrible T.A. the majority of the class withdrew halfway through the semester. Homework is collected daily and fairly simple, but is only 1% of your grade. He grades very tough and grades on how neatly you write. He gets off topic easily, and when we are going over one section/day, this takes away from the learning
However much you want to sleep, dont. Worth paying attention, you will be rewarded in the grading.
BEST BY TEST. And got an A.
If you want to cruise and get an A without understanding the math, sure, he's a terrible professor. Please drop out, you'll be doing the rest of us a favor. But if you want to learn math, he's a brilliant professor. Take your pick..
I am TERRIBLE at math and I heard such bad things about this prof, but it wasn't an unbearable class. I worked SO hard and got a B in the class, you have about 4 homework assignments each week and you HAVE to do them if you wanna learn the material and pass. Every point in this class counts because the exams are HARD.
If you want to work your butt off in this class and possibly fail. Then take this class. I worked hard on all the take home quizzes, CEA's (which 5/12 were due) and all the reading assignments. Went to class every day, and went to the tutor lab. Exams are hard so if you mess one up, your screwed. The TA's help u out more than he does.
Great class if you're willing to do all of the work. Professor Schreiner's fantastic! He knows all of the material in and out and explains it well. If you want to cruise through math without doing work, this isn't the class for you, but if you study hard and do your work, you'll have an awesome class!
Great class if you are willing to do all of the work. Professor Schreiner's fantastic! He knows all of the material in and out and explains it well. If you want to cruise through math without doing work, this isn't the class for you, but if you study hard and do your work, you'll have an awesome class!
This is definitely a college type course so it's not the easiest. The professor explains things well and is passionate about what he does. The best way to do well in this class is to start strong and don't fall behind. The TA's help a lot and there are also study labs and review sessions so take advantage!
Not a hard course, involves a lot of busy work. Homework due every day (reading assignment) plus weekly homework due on Friday (problems from book). Material includes linear equations, matricies, time-value of money, and sets. Three exams plus comprehensive final. Homework counts for little, I did maybe 30% of it and managed a CB with 60% on exam 3
Not too hard course, involves a lot of busy work. But he is very helpfull I should have said this but cant change it now. Homework due every day but counts for little in exam.
too much textbook use, time management not perfect, other wise superb
DO NOT TAKE THIS IF YOU CAN AVOID IT. He does not help you. If you can't understand it, he is too busy to help and his TA's barely speak English. Unless you like to teach yourself things AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
no probs but please review your selection of assistants thank you
This teacher was very bad. one of the worst at WMU. Very disorganized and horribly put together grading scale. I would recommend avoiding this teacher at all costs.
Such an awful teacher and the class is not easy. I took his class twice, got an F, then a D. I am usually pretty good in math but the way the class is taught and the damand that is asked is just an awful combination. I think this is one of the most failed classes in WMU and he is the only teacher. I would suggest taking precalc and to avoid him.
no probs
By far the most difficult class I've taken at WMU thus far. I've never had to retake a class all my college career and this class I did. I know a lot of people who have retaken this class. He marks you down on literally everything. I needed 1 point to get a C on the exam, 1! He wouldn't give it to me. TAKE SOMETHING ELSE!!!!
work hard and he rewards you / slack and you are punished in gradings - and that is how it should be
Finally passed this class after taking it 3 times. horrible horrible teacher. this guy shouldn't even be allowed to teach at a University.
Too many f001s taking this course teacher is brilliant
Almost everyone I have talked to has taken this class two or three times (including myself) just to receive a C. If you want to pass this class you have to teach yourself almost everything. GO TO THE TUTOR LAB! You will learn more there than you will in class. The worst part is he is the only professor that teaches finite. Good luck with this one!!
This class is hard if you don't like math and aren't good at it. I got a BA but i literally taught all of the material to myself. All i can say is that the tutor lab will be your best friend. Go, Go, Go! The exams are worth about 80% or more of your grade so there is no room to fail them.
This might have been the worst professor I have ever experienced at WMU! Avoid taking Finite with this professor at all costs, he will try to fail you.
horrible horrible teacher. he assigns hours of homework assignments that literally end up being worth a total of 1% of your grade. Tests are impossible. Homework is graded very hard. Overall, I will be honest, I think a 2 year old could do a better job at teaching than he could.
HORRIBLE TEACHER THE WORST EVER
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had at WMU. The only people you might learn anything from is your TA which mine was actually pretty good. The lectures are all over the place. Attendance is worth literally like 1% of your grade, and homework is like 10%. The ONLY way you will pass this class if you get really good grades on tests and quizzes
Mr. Schrenier is a awful teacher who is too smart for his own good. He knows all the material but has no clue how to effectively teach and is the worst teacher at WMU. His class had a %50 fail rate last semester. DO NOT TAKE
I was forced to rate at all 1's, due to the fact I can not put all 0's. He has frequent mistakes in his emails, and often explains the problem HE made in a more confusing fashion, amplifying the problem rather than fixing it. "Would take again" being the class with a different teacher. Online assignment 'input answer' errors fail the hw. GLHF
I really don't think that he was an awful professor. He was always willing to help and encouraged students to attend his office hours and the tutor lab. If a student chooses not to go to class or the lab, that is there problem. I took this class twice and by going through it again, I realized that this class requires a lot of time and work.
I loved Schreiner! The best teacher I have ever had!
This class definitely takes quite a bit of time out of your schedule for studying and whatnot, but if you take the time, you'll get a good grade in the class. Schreiner was very encouraging to his students about attending his office hours and tutor hours. He was always emailing and keeping his students up-to-date on what was going on in the class.
He is a very hard professor who makes you really work for your grade, mostly because he can't properly communicate any thoughts during a lecture. Majority of the material has to be taught by yourself or with the help of his TAs.
I heard that this class was pretty hard, but it wasn't that bad. You just have to go to class and pay attention. If you find it difficult to understand, there are sooo many helpful resources (tutor lab, recitation instructors, and online tutoring videos on MyMathLab).
Schreiner is a very confusing professor. Show up to class and take minor notes and participate you will be able to do well. READ THE CHAPTERS. It is the only way you will learn from his class. Do all the homework and online assignments because they will help you in the long run and are graded. Everyone said hard class, but its not. Tests are curved
Mr. Schreiner is very passionate about teaching math, he is very engaged when he teaches and learning from him is a breeze and the material isn't very hard especially when he breaks it down very well and gives you all the resources out their to succeed. Put in your time or you wont get a good grade, this is a class where your grade is deserved.
Be ready to take an extremely difficult college course with a professor who is not engaging and difficult to understand when he teaches the material.
Super hard
worst teacher I've ever had.
You'll need to learn how to teach yourself.
A lot of homework is given but if you do the homework you will do good on the exams. Mr. Schreiner along with the TA's are very helpful and if you go to class you should do well in the class
He is not a very good professor when it comes to getting to know his students. Majority of his students are business major freshman or sophomores and his class is required. It is a 250 person lecture where he just talks and hate being interrupted. If you go to his office hours he is really specific on certain parts and he isn't the best professor.
In this class you can expect to teach yourself a lot of the material. However, the class gets harder as the semester goes on. The class is actually easy if you seek help when you need it. If you would like a good grade in the class it is very easy just ask questions, read the required material, do all the assignments and go to class.
I've never been very good at math and keeping interest in lectures was tough. Things Schreiner said often skipped around and made very little sense. I taught myself everything from online homework and reading the book over and over. I thought my TA was going to be helpful but she had favorites and didn't care to help anyone else. Good luck.
Read the material before you go to class or else you won't understand anything he's talking about. Mostly don't rely on his lectures or your notes to get you through. Rely on your own work ethic and the book.
Everyone complains about Schreiner, but I thought he was very clear and easy to understand. He gives you everything you need to pass and gives good lectures. DON'T SKIP CLASS (especially the labs with your TA) and you will be fine. I got a BA.
Professor Schreiner is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He is terrible at explaining concepts and when asked for help, just makes things more confusing. Basically in this class you have to teach yourself because what he teaches has nothing to do with our homework, exams, etc. I have not learned one thing in this class. I am disappointed.
Okay, so Schreiner is so technical about EVERYTHING. Please I advise you not to go to him I'm usually good at math but he makes you feel dumb if its not the way he wants you to explain it. He is no fun either like if you make a joke he tries to correct you he has dry humor . I just don't like him and the whole class doesn't either . He is horrible.
He is the worst prof I have ever had at WMU. Rumor is he has been on academic probation multiple times for failing so many students. I would recommend taking this class with another prof.
Toughest teacher I have to date. Very tought grader and doesnt make learning fun at all. Ive taken advanced level math courses AP all through high school and im pushing for a C. No extra credit is offered and youll prob fail.
If you do not want to withdraw from a class or fail and mess with your GPA do NOT take this class. Tests are weighed so heavily, where as the hours you spend on homework and time consuming written assignments are only worth 2% of your grade. Lectures teach you nothing, you learn from the "view an example" on the online homework. Horrible professor
You spend about 10+ hours on HW a week when tests are 90% of your grade. I am good at math; I am lucky to be passing with a C. His grading is extremely hard. If your work isn't how he likes it expect a good amount of points off. Learned nothing from lectures. Don't take if you can't afford GPA reduction. Heard he has the highest fail rate at WMU.
He is so particular on grading. If you miss one part of the answer, he will mark the entire thing wrong. Avoid him at all costs. Take the course at KVCC and transfer the credits. If you're not naturally good at math, you're screwed.
Mr. Schreiner has a bad reputation and I'm not sure. This is a tough class don't get wrong, but I think it would be hard with any teacher. First big lecture hall as a freshman was tough getting used to especially in math not being able to ask question. More then 1/2 the class dropped before the deadline. Work hard and the class is do-able.
I thought I was doing well in the class up until the final exam, and then he finally put all the grades in. Wouldn't curve grades when some people missed the passing point by a tenth of a percent.
Horrible Professor and TAs. You have to teach this class to yourself, so read, do the online homework (even though it's not worth much, point wise), and see if you can find videos on youtube or my math lab. Professor does not explain concepts well and lecture is always disorganized. The TA I had was bad too, couldn't explain anything well.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! This class will torture you and bring you a lot of stress. He doesn't teach well and there's TOO MUCH homework. Not to mention that 80% of your grade is based on exams. I got an E in his class. Retook the class with Dr. Tim Clark in the summer and got a B.
What you get in this class is based on your work ethic. If you need clarification, make sure to ask a lot of questions during the lab sessions.
The absolute WORST professor AND class I've ever taken. EXTREMELY DIFFICULT!! He does not explain material well and you will spend majority of your time doing online assignments and teaching yourself the material. Lectures are mandatory for clicker questions and attendance at the end of every lecture so you cannot skip out. SAVE YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!
This professor is very unhelpful, mainly relied on tutors
The professor doesn't care how good or bad the students are doing, he actually encourages students to drop out of the class. You could study all week long for an exam & not even get a D. There's extra credit on the take home quizzes & exams but it is way HARDER than anything we've done in class. AVOID this class at all costs, worst class at Western
This is by far the funniest man alive, his constant goofs and gaffs gave the class life. He once spend the first half of a class period by showing us bar charts that he had clearly made in his free time. If you are due for a hearty chuckle this is the class for you. LEGENDS NEVER DIE!!
Tests are worth your grade. You do bad on one test and you do bad in the class. As a freshmen I recommend taking it at a community college
easily the worst professor or teacher I've ever had. The tests are written so poorly it's almost impossible to decipher what formula to use and his lectures are all over the place with very little organization. You either have to learn it yourself or have a tutor teach it to you. The majority of class either failed or dropped out.
Hardest class and worst professor I have ever had. Homework heavy and its barely worth any of your grade, and the exams hardly reflect the homework assignments. Also very confusing and unorganized lectures. He has admitted that he only has about a 40% pass rate. Save yourself the money and take it at community college instead.
He teaches the material hes required too. Sometimes explains easy things too in depth, but I thought he was decent. A lot of ppl failed the course bc THEY DIDNT STUDY ENOUGH OUTSIDE OF CLASS. It wasnt a reflection of Marks teaching, in my opinion. Had to go to tutoring every day for this class. Use your resources. Not an easy class, but doable
This class was required, but I enjoy math. I never read the assigned readings for the chapters, but his lectures made enough sense I didn't have to. Plus you get a lab type class with a TA to help you understand the material. Extra credit opportunities on every test and quiz however assessments like those are worth something like 80% of your grade.
I love Maths but the class along with the professor needs improvement. There is alot of homework due every week that barely contributes to your overall grade. The BEST advice I can give is: TO GO TO THE TUTOR LAB. The tutors in there helped me alot esp with hw and materials not understood in lecture.
Mark is a decent professor, he explains things good and even goes over some of the problems in class. The material is hard but as long as you work and go to tutoring at least 2 times a week you'll pass.
He's a very strict, straightforward teacher. You skip class good luck catching up. Tutor lab is a life line but even they're wrong sometimes. Tests and take home quizzes are the make and break for this class. He makes himself available if you make yourself available. He will meet you halfway but sometimes he'll make you go all the way by yourself.
This is the college professor that they warn you about in high school. I hated this class and it was so difficult start to finish. It would be better if homework and online things were more weighted as most of your grade is based off the tests. Take advantage of study opportunities. Good luck, and hold your breath!
I thought this class was very easy. The only reason so many people fail is because they don't do the homework then expect the test to be easy. Material is explained well especially in the labs. Just do the work and you can expect an A.
This class is a pain and such a weed out course.I always went to lectures, but still learned nothing. Make sure you keep up on the online assignments too. Make sure you take advantage of the tutors because they will save your grade. Also make sure your TA likes you because they are the ones who actually grade your stuff, go to lab class on Fridays.
I had heard a lot of bad things about this class but it was the best I've taken at WMU. There's a lot of online homework but it's super easy so long as you complete it. Tests are all based on the online homework. Schreiner was very fair and cool in his lectures, wish all WMU classes could be like this!
There are many assignments both online and written that you will have to complete. He is not clear when lecturing so I would recommend going to the TAs or available tutors for additional assistance. If you do not do assignments his way you will be docked points and all points matter in this class. Recommend taking at a community college.
Almost all work is online- 50 minute lectures are spent taking attendance and going over the material quickly. Mostly self taught course. Labs just collect homework and go over the problems
You MUST go to class on time. 2 skips & you're down a full letter grade even if you're late to class by 2 min, you're skipping! Use Fox Hall's SSC for help & not Bronco study zone. Was in there nightly for help, very good. Expect to teach yourself as he doesn't teach. Not given enough time on tests (harder than content given). Homework heavy.
He tends to over complicate things when he tries to explain them. There is also a lot of assignments written, and online, which don's count for much of your grade. Everything rides on test, do well on those and you will pass, if not, your going to fail. The tutor lab is the best thing you can do to help yourself
Doesn't explain very well.
Terrible class
I took this class over a year ago and I'm still pressed about how terrible it was. Just take it at KVCC. The math is simple, Mark just wants to ruin your life and gpa. This class is a 30% pass rate, lol.
4.0 student my first year and I flat out could not pass this class. Undoubtably the worst experience Ive ever had in a college course. TAKE THIS AT KVCC. Youll have to devote 3+ hours daily to this class to earn a respectable grade. You will have to teach yourself. Very harsh grader. 40% pass rate.
Are you trying to have a hard time while doing lots of homework that are not even worth a significant percentage in your final grade? if you answered yes then take this class. This professor is HARD and gives you too much unnecessary work. Tough grader and does not care how you do.
He was so mean. Didnt care about his students. Wasnt helpful at all.
For anyone look to take this class dont. Having gone to both a community college and university, he is one of if not the worst professor I have ever had. He gives so much unnecessary work along with reading and online assignments that they dont help. He doesnt care about students and makes you feel like you arent putting in any effort.
I have heard many bad things about this class and about Professor Schreiner so I was very hesitant when taking this class. There is a lot of homework, not gonna lie. But Schreiner is a really great teacher and explains the material well. I usually am awful at math but I got an A. As long as you do all of the assignments you will get an A.
He is the worst professor at Western Michigan University. Does not care about his student what so ever, opens the class up on the first day saying a third of the students will fail. I "failed this class twice and have a 3.5 GPA. That should tell you everything you need to know take it at KVCC or a CC back home this man is doing students terribly.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AT WESTERN. Take it at a community college and transfer your credits over. Mark is the worst professor. The failing rate in his class is 6o%. Lectures are boring and confusing, he doesn't teach the material well and gives you tons of homework exercises and unnecessary information. Avoid him if you can.
Do not take this class here. He does not know how to explain the material at all and expects everyone to somehow have a base knowledge of the material he is covering that day. Take this at a community college or another university. You will be saving lots of stress and most likely your GPA.
Terrible experience. I was a great math student all through HS... That changed this year. This guy is not clear
He gets a tough reputation due to the difficulty of this class. He is not anything special but you can pass just fine with him. Use the tutoring lab often and you will do well
I don't know why he is rated very low, you're in a university and you are expected more. He assigns weekly writing assignments and online homework that helps you understand the subject. You really have to study for exams because time is limited to only 50 min. I would recommend choosing Mrs. Guali as the instructor she really cares about students.
I never had too much trouble in math before this class. This is the worst class I've ever taken at Western. In class the way he taught made learning the impossible and I had to get help from friends who took that class in high school. He is a very strict grader and the class has lots of homework. DONT TAKE FINITE WITH MARK SCHREINER!!!
Very bad experience in this class from the majority of my class mates. Class average overall was a 68%. Hes the best example of taking wrongful pride in people not passing his entry level math class, as he bragged about how many fail out every semester on my first day of class. I did everything I could to pass, and did by fractions of a percent.
He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I dont even understand why he has a bad reputation. Its Math and college so you are supposed to have a lot of homework and reading to understand and pass the class. I am sure that without the homework, I wouldnt have done this good in his class.
Gives WAY too much homework. One section may have you solve 10 problems from the book for only 1 point. ex. question #1 may say " do problems 1,2,8,15,20,32,78, and 80." the written assignments take hours, and thats in addition to the online assignments in the stupid MyLab. I dont know why instructors act like they are the only class we have.
Many people complain about taking Finite Mathematics (MATH1160) with him. Those who complain do not have a solid math foundation from high school. This class is a typical math class. He's not a bad prof at all, but he does assume that you have experience with algebra, which is reasonable. If you hated math in HS you might struggle.
Whatever you heard about this professor is probably true. This is a VERY HARD class. I would personally recommend taking this class at a community college, however, this class is passable. In order to pass this class READ THE BOOK, and build a great relationship with your TA.! I failed the class once and got an E. I took it again and got an A!
He is VERY unorganized, and forgetful. When lecturing, he consistently forgets his tablet so he cannot show examples on how to do certain problems or equations. His tests are very short with 10-15 questions, but are very complex and hard to understand. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but the time limit for for his tests and quiz's are short.
He is literally the worst professor I have ever had. Along with the lab instructors. I have always been an A student in math and I have never failed a class in my life! He spends the majority of class trying to figure out how to work his computer and then the rest of class is only showing the complicated way to do the math problem. Do not take it!
A lot of students complain that Professor Schreiner gives out a lot of homework and yes, he does. However, I highly believe that these assignments and exercises help students to understand the materials given by him and to understand the concepts. He really is a caring professor and will answer the questions that you ask him outside of class.
A really poor instructor who says a whole lot during his lectures yet we still do not learn anything. I was lucky to have a great lab instructor and I relied on him for things that I could not learn myself from the textbook or the lab assignments. There is decent extra credit in this class and it is easy to pass but prepare to teach all to yourself
This class really isn't hard if you have some experience with algebra 2 and probability. This professor is not great and is a slow talker, but the lab instructors are very helpful. As long as you do the homework and grasp the concepts the class is easy. There are lots of office hours and help available too.
As someone who took AP calculus AB and BC and did just fine, this basic math was made so difficult for no reason. Mark will ramble about anything except for the practical use of what he's teaching. He will go on and on and I have never actually taken something beneficial from this class. do not recommend.
Does not respond to emails, assumes you remember everything from previous classes (Does not go in depth). Also, every test is timed fast, usually half an hour to 45 minutes. Some students are good at timed tests but most are not.
AVOID THIS CLASS AND THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS
Dont take this class, worst class I have ever taken. Extremely tough grader, doesnt make sense in his lectures. Grades on how accurate and how neat the papers are. Fail a test? You not coming back from it.
Worst Professor Ive had to date, relying on his Teaching assistants to do most of the teaching in labs. Tests are not given a reasonable amount of questions for the time given. WOULD NOT TAKE cant stress that enough.
I actually took this class last year, but I had to come back and warn. He is quite literally the worst professor I have had thus far. I am an A student and I was two years ahead in math and this class got under my skin. The material is not difficult, he is just horrible at teaching. LOTS OF HOMEWORK. If you want to do well, just read the book.
The only way you can pass this class is if you go to the tutoring. Office hours do not help!!! If you do not explain it his way he will make you feel stupid!!! None of what he says ever makes sense so be prepared to teach yourself. He is also a tough grader and will MARK U DOWN FOR EVERYTHING!!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! HE WILL RUIN YOUR GPA.
all i can say is DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. EVER.
I took this math class already in high school so I expected this course to be a breeze, and an easy review. I was wrong. Professor Schreiner makes it very difficult to succeed (doesn't answer emails, offerers no opportunity to improve grade, doesn't manage his class time efficiently). He grades EVERYTHING extremely meticulously. Be ready to grind.
don't take this class unless you have a lot of time and are EXTREMELY good at math. i have never worked so hard and still ended with a D-
He would teach lessons that were different from homework being assigned. He also had multiple places to turn in assignments which made it very confusing.
He is a difficult grader and tests are way too long and hard to finish them within 50 minutes of class. Make sure to do the online homework as it will help you study.
He often times teaches through things really fast and then expects us to know how to do the homework. He always says that no one is watching the videos he sends out and we should because it could help, but then doesn't teach very well in class. He says that people do really good or really bad and I have rarely heard of people who do good. No help
Talk about a lot of work. Too much homework, not worth nearly as much as it should. Tests have no multiple choice, written assignments nearly impossible to get a good grade. Lectures make no sense, he cant form a complete sentence, and puts you to sleep. Only good thing about the class was the lab since it was taught by a TA and actually helpful.
The TA was the only reason I got a good grade. He clearly doesnt care about anyone's time because he gives WAY TOO MUCH HOMEWORK. Every assignment takes at least 4 hours. Avoid this professor.
This prof is used to freshmen being better prepared coming from highschool in terms of math. That is why everyone complains about this class. I took honors math in HS and nothing about finite mathematics was out of the ordinary. To my peers, sorry high school did not prepare you. It's not his fault.
This class has a reputation for being tough, but the lectures are worthwhile if you stay engaged. The workload is heavy, so using study tools like unstuck study ai alongside the textbook can really help manage the time commitment. The TA's support made the difference for my grade.
The only class I ever dropped in my life. I regret taking Finite Math with him
